We propose that a dark matter (DM) spike around the Galactic Center's (GC) supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, could account for most of the bulge's measured 511 keV line intensity while remaining cosmologically compatible. DM annihilation can be the primary source of the 511 keV line emission without violating constraints from disk emission observations and in-flight positron annihilation with the interstellar medium, provided the disk emission is dominated by an astrophysical source of low-energy positrons. We find that a DM mass up to approximately 20 MeV, either with a Gondolo-Silk spike or one softened by stellar heating, could explain the observed 511 keV bulge emission profile. We infer supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion rates and Eddington ratios as a function of SMBH/host galaxy mass and redshift with the empirical TRINITY model of dark matter halo--galaxy--SMBH connection. We demonstrate that the anomalous ionization rate observed in the Central Molecular Zone can be attributed to MeV dark matter annihilations into $e^+e^-$ pairs for galactic dark matter profiles with slopes $\gamma>1$. The low annihilation cross-sections required avoid cosmological constraints and imply no detectable inverse Compton, bremsstrahlung or synchrotron emissions in radio, X and gamma rays. Rapid formation of supermassive black holes occurs in dense nuclear star clusters that are initially gas-dominated. Stellar-mass black hole remnants of the most massive cluster sink into the core, where a massive runaway black hole forms as a consequence of combined effects of repeated mergers and Eddington-limited gas accretion. Data from the James Webb Space Telescope have revealed an intriguing population of bright galaxies at high redshifts. In this work, we use extreme-value statistics to calculate the distribution (in UV magnitude) of the brightest galaxies in the redshift range $9 \lesssim z \lesssim 16$. We combine the Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) approach with modelling of the galaxy luminosity function. We obtain predictions of the brightest galaxies for a suite of luminosity functions, including the Schechter and double power law functions, as well as a model parametrised by the stellar formation efficiency $f_*$. We find that the JWST data is broadly consistent with $f_*$ of $5\%-10\%$, and that the brightest galaxy at $z\sim16$ will have $M_{\rm UV}\approx -23.5^{0.8}_{0.4}$. If $f_*$ is dependent on halo mass, we predict $M_{\rm UV}\approx -22.5^{0.5}_{1.5}$ for such an object. A spinning supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the core of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) provides room for the elusive ultra-light scalar particles (ULSP) to be produced through a phenomenon called \textit{superradiance}. As a result of this phenomenon, a cloud of scalar particles forms around the black hole by draining the spin angular momentum of the SMBH. In this work, we present a study of the superradiant instability due to a scalar field in the vicinity of the central SMBH in an AGN. We begin by showing that the time-evolution of the gravitational coupling $\alpha$ in a realistic ambiance created by the accretion disk around the SMBH in AGN leads to interesting consequences such as the amplified growth of the scalar cloud, enhancement of the gravitational wave emission rate, and appearance of higher modes of superradiance within the age of the Universe ($\sim 10^{10}$ years). We then explore the consequence of superradiance on the characteristics of the AGN. Using the Novikov-Thorne model for an accretion disk, we divide the full spectrum into three distinct wavelength bands- X-ray ($10^{-4}-10^{-2}~\mu$m), UV (0.010-0.4~$\mu$m), and Vis-IR (0.4~$\mu$m-100~$\mu$m) and observe sudden drops in the time-variations of the luminosities across these bands and Eddington ratio ($f_{\textrm{Edd}}$) with a characteristic timescale of superradiance. Using a uniform distribution of spin and mass of the SMBHs in AGNs, we demonstrate the appearance of depleted regions and accumulations along the boundaries of these regions in the planes of different band-luminosities and $f_{\textrm{Edd}}$. The Hawking process results in a monotonic decrease of the black hole mass, but a biased random walk of the black hole angular momentum. We demonstrate that this stochastic process leads to a significant fraction of primordial black holes becoming extremal Kerr black holes (EKBHs) of one to a few Planck masses regardless of their initial mass. For these EKBHs, the probability of ever absorbing a photon or other particle from the cosmic environment is small, even in the cores of galaxies. Insights from JWST observations suggest that AGN feedback evolved from a short-lived, high redshift phase in which radiatively cooled turbulence and/or momentum-conserving outflows stimulated vigorous early star formation (``positive'' feedback), to late, energy-conserving outflows that depleted halo gas reservoirs and quenched star formation. The transition between these two regimes occurred at $z\sim 6$, independently of galaxy mass, for simple assumptions about the outflows and star formation process. We explore the $511$~keV emission associated to sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles that can produce electron-positron pairs and form positronium after thermalizing. We use $\sim16$~yr of SPI data from INTEGRAL to constrain DM properties, considering the full positron propagation and losses, and the free electron density drop away from the Galactic plane. We show that the predicted longitude and latitude profiles vary significantly for different DM masses, unlike previous assumptions, and obtain the strongest limits on sub-GeV DM (from the MeV to a few GeV) so far, excluding cross-sections down to $\langle \sigma v \rangle \lesssim10^{-32}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for $m_{\chi}\sim1\,\text{MeV}$ and $\langle \sigma v \rangle \lesssim10^{-26}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1} $ for $m_{\chi}\sim5\,\text{GeV}$ and lifetimes up to $\tau \gtrsim 10^{29}\, \textrm{s} \, (m_{\chi}\sim1\,\text{MeV}) $ and $\tau \gtrsim 10^{27}\,\textrm{s}$ ($m_{\chi}\sim5$~GeV) for the typical Navarro-Frenk-White DM profile. We present predictions for the high-redshift halo-galaxy-supermassive black hole (SMBH) connection from the TRINITY model. Constrained by a comprehensive compilation of galaxy ($0\leq z \leq 10$) and SMBH datasets ($0\leq z \leq 6.5$), TRINITY finds: 1) The number of SMBHs with $M_\bullet > 10^9 M_\odot$ in the observable Universe increases by six orders of magnitude from $z\sim10$ to $z\sim2$, and by another factor of $\sim 3$ from $z\sim2$ to $z=0$; 2) The $M_\bullet > 10^9/10^{10} M_\odot$ SMBHs at $z\sim 6$ live in haloes with $\sim (2-3)/(3-5) \times 10^{12} M_\odot$; 3) the new JWST AGNs at $7\lesssim z \lesssim 11$ are broadly consistent with the median SMBH mass-galaxy mass relation for AGNs from TRINITY; 4) Seeds from runaway mergers in nuclear star clusters are viable progenitors for the SMBHs in GN-z11 ($z=10.6$) and CEERS_1019 ($z=8.7$); 5) $z=6-10$ quasar luminosity functions from wide area surveys by, e.g., Roman and Euclid, will reduce uncertainties in the $z=6-10$ SMBH mass-galaxy mass relation by up to $\sim 0.5$ dex., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS. The 21-cm brightness temperature fluctuation from the Dark Ages ($z \simeq 30-100$) will allow us to probe the inflationary epoch on very small scales ($>0.1 \, \mbox{Mpc}^{-1}$), inaccessible to cosmic microwave background experiments. Combined with the possibility to collect information from different redshift slices, the 21-cm bispectrum has the potential to significantly improve constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity. However, recent work has shown secondary effects source off-diagonal terms in the covariance matrix which can significantly affect forecasted constraints, especially in signals that peak in the squeezed configuration, such as the local bispectrum. In this paper we propose the three-point $\langle 21-21-\rm CMB \rangle$ bispectrum cross-correlation as a new independent observational channel sensitive to local primordial non-Gaussianity. We find that, contrary to the 21-cm bispectrum, secondary contributions are subdominant to the primordial signal for values $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc} \sim 1$, resulting in negligible effects from off-diagonal terms in the covariance matrix. We forecast that CMB $T$ and $E$ modes cross-correlated with an ideal cosmic variance-limited 21-cm experiment with a $0.1$ MHz frequency and $0.1$ arc-minute angular resolution could reach $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc} \sim 6 \times 10^{-3}$. A detailed analysis is presented of gravitational microlensing by intervening compact objects of the black hole shadows imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). We show how the center, size, and shape of the shadow depend on the Einstein angle relative to the true/unlensed shadow size, and how the location of the lens affects the shift, size, and asymmetry of the black hole shadow due to microlensing. Assuming a supermassive black hole (SMBH) casts a circular-shaped true shadow, microlensing can create an asymmetry of up to approximately 8\%, which is twice the asymmetry caused by the SMBH's spin and its tilt relative to us. Furthermore, the size can be enhanced by $\sim$50\% of the true shadow. Currently, the terrestrial baselines of EHT lack the resolution to detect microlensing signatures in the shadows. However, future expansions of EHT, including space-based baselines at the Moon and L$_2$, could potentially enable the detection of microlensing events. For Sgr A$^*$, an event rate of 0.0014 per year makes the microlensing phenomena difficult to observe even with space-based baselines for the stellar population in the stellar bulge and stellar disk for lens masses $\sim M_\odot$. Nonetheless, the presence of a cluster of 20,000 stellar-mass black holes in the central parsec of the Milky Way, expected to arise from dynamical friction acting on infalling stellar clusters, significantly boosts the event rate. We present the redshift evolution of quasar luminosity functions decomposed by halo mass, galaxy mass, supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, and Eddington ratio, as well as SMBH kinetic/radiative energy output ratios from TRINITY, a flexible empirical model that self-consistently infers the halo--galaxy--SMBH connection that match observational data. Key findings include: 1) The normalization of QLF increases by ~3-4 dex from z~10 to z~4, due to the fast mass build-up of different SMBH populations; 2) From z~4 to z~1, less massive galaxies and SMBHs make up bigger and bigger fractions of QLFs, due to the AGN downsizing effect; 3) At z~0, massive haloes/galaxies/SMBHs are responsible for most bright quasars due to low Eddington ratios among all SMBHs; 4) The bright ends of quasar luminosity functions (QLFs) are dominated by SMBHs that are at least 0.3 dex over-massive relative to the median SMBH mass-galaxy mass relation; 5) QLFs at z~6-7 are dominated by SMBHs accreting at Eddington ratios 0.1 < $\eta_\mathrm{rad}$ < 1, but super-Eddington AGNs contribute more significantly to QLFs towards z~9-10., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures. Large-scale magnetic fields in the nuclear regions of protogalaxies can promote the formation and early growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) by direct collapse and magnetically boosted accretion. Turbulence associated with gravitational infall and star formation can drive the rms field strength toward equipartition with the mean gas kinetic energy; this field has a generic tendency to self-organize into large, coherent structures. If the poloidal component of the field (relative to the rotational axis of a star-forming disc) becomes organized on scales $\lesssim r$ and attains an energy of order a few percent of the turbulent energy in the disc, then dynamo effects are expected to generate magnetic torques capable of increasing the inflow speed and thickening the disc. The accretion flow can transport matter toward the center of mass at a rate adequate to create and grow a massive direct-collapse black hole (DCBH) seed and fuel the subsequent AGN at a high rate, without becoming gravitationally unstable. We calculate the neutrino luminosity in an astrophysical scenario where dark matter is captured by a neutron star which eventually implodes to form a low mass black hole. The Trojan horse scenario involves the collapse of a neutron star (NS) due to the accumulation of a critical amount of dark matter (DM) during its lifetime. As a result, a central disk forms out of the ejected material with a finite radial extension, density, temperature, and lepton fraction, producing fainter neutrino luminosities and colder associated spectra than found in a regular core-collapse supernova. The emitted gravitational wave (GW) signal from the imploding NS should be detectable at ultra-high $\gtrsim 0.1$ GHz frequencies., Comment: comments are welcome

We use H.E.S.S. $\gamma$-ray observations of Sgr A* to derive novel limits on the Dark Matter (DM) annihilation cross-section. We quantify their dependence on uncertainties i) in the DM halo profile, which we vary from peaked to cored, and ii) in the shape of the DM spike around Sgr A*, dynamically heated by the nuclear star cluster. For peaked halo profiles and depending on the heating of the spike, our limits are the strongest existing ones for DM masses above a few TeV. Using recent empirical constraints on the dark matter halo--galaxy--supermassive black hole (SMBH) connection from $z=0-7$, we infer how undermassive, typical, and overmassive SMBHs contribute to the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at $z=6$. We find that beyond $L_\mathrm{bol} = 5 \times 10^{46}$ erg/s, the $z=6$ QLF is dominated by SMBHs that are at least 0.3 dex above the $z=6$ median $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation. The QLF is dominated by typical SMBHs (i.e., within $\pm 0.3$ dex around the $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation) at $L_\mathrm{bol} \lesssim 10^{45}$ erg/s. At $z\sim 6$, the intrinsic $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation for all SMBHs is slightly steeper than the $z=0$ scaling, with a similar normalization at $M_* \sim 10^{11} M_\odot$. We also predict the $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation for $z=6$ bright quasars selected by different bolometric luminosity thresholds, finding very good agreement with observations. For quasars with $L_\mathrm{bol} > 3 \times 10^{46}$ ($10^{48}$) erg/s, the scaling relation is shifted upwards by $\sim0.35$ (1.0) dex for $10^{11} M_\odot$ galaxies. To accurately measure the intrinsic $M_\bullet-M_*$ relation, it is essential to include fainter quasars with $L_\mathrm{bol} \lesssim 10^{45}$ erg/s. Recent data from the James Webb Space Telescope suggest that there are realistic prospects for detecting the earliest generation of stars at redshift ~20. These metal-poor, gaseous Population III (Pop III) stars are likely in the mass range 10-1000 solar masses. We develop a framework for calculating the abundances of Pop III stars as well as the distribution of the most massive Pop III stars based on an application of extreme-value statistics. Our calculations use the star formation rate density from a recent simulation to calibrate the star-formation efficiency from which the Pop III stellar abundances are derived. Our extreme-value modelling suggests that the most massive Pop III stars at redshifts 10-20 are likely to be $\gtrsim10^3-10^4\,{\rm M}_\odot$. Such extreme Pop III stars were sufficiently numerous to be the seeds of supermassive black holes at high redshifts and possibly source detectable gravitational waves. Black hole evaporation is generally considered inevitable for low-mass black holes, yet there is no confirmation of this remarkable hypothesis. Here, we propose a phenomenological model that appeals to the possible survival of light quasi-extremal primordial black holes as a significant dark matter component and show that the related cosmological and astrophysical constraints disappear for reasonable degrees of quasi-extremality. Recent astrophysical transient Swift J1913.1+1946 may be associated with the $\gamma$-ray burst GRB 221009A. The redshift of this event is $z\simeq 0.151$. Very high-energy $\gamma$-rays (up to 18 TeV) followed the transient and were observed by LHAASO, additionally Carpet-2 detected a photon-like air shower of 251 TeV. Photons of such high energy are expected to readily annihilate with the diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL) before reaching Earth. If the $\gamma$-ray identification and redshift measurements are correct, new physics could be necessary to explain these measurements. This letter provides the first CP-even scalar explanation of the most energetic 18 TeV event reported by LHAASO. In this minimal scenario, the light scalar singlet $S$ mixes with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson $h$. The highly boosted $S$ particles are produced in the GRB and then undergo the radiative decay di-photon $S\rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ while propagating to Earth. The resulting photons may thus be produced at a remote region without being nullified by the EBL. Hence, the usual exponential reduction of $\gamma$-rays is lifted due to an attenuation that is inverse in the optical depth, which becomes much larger due to the scalar carriers., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The transcendental expectation of string theory is that the nature of the fundamental forces, particle spectra and masses, together with coupling constants, is uniquely determined by mathematical and logical consistency, non-empirically, that is by pure reason. However pluralism triumphed with the explosive emergence of the multiverse. String theorists have extended a long-sought dream (their unique and final theory) to a landscape or a happy caparnaum. Proponents of string theory try to qualify their arguments via swampland conjectures while cosmologists retreat to their telescopes. We review the current status of the string theory swampland.

The Hubble constant inferred from the 6-parameter fit to the CMB power spectrum conflicts with the value obtained from direct measurements via type Ia supernova and Cepheids observations. We write down effective operators involving spin-0, spin-1/2, and spin-1 dark matter that lead to the relativistic production of dark matter particles at early times, and consequently lead to an increase in the number of relativistic degrees of freedom. This mechanism which is amenable to CMB, BBN, and structure formation observables can sufficiently raise the value of the Hubble constant derived from CMB and reconcile local and CMB probes of the Hubble constant. This mechanism alone increases $H_0$ up to $70\, {\rm km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$, and with the help of a Phantom-like cosmology, reach $H_0 \simeq 71-73\, {\rm km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$. Lastly, we outline the region of parameter space which reproduces $H_0 \simeq 71-73\, {\rm km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$ while obeying all relevant constraints., Comment: 10 pages and 14 figures

Nuclear star clusters, which fragment into metal-poor stars in situ at the centers of protogalaxies, provide ideal environments for the formation of intermediate-mass black holes with masses $10^3-10^6M_\odot$. We utilize the semianalytic model implemented in Rapster, a public rapid cluster evolution code. We implement simple recipes for stellar collisions and gas accretion/expulsion into the code and identify the regimes where each channel contributes to the dynamical formation of intermediate-mass black holes via repeated mergers of stellar black hole seeds. We find that intermediate-mass black hole formation in gas-rich environments is almost inevitable if the initial mean density of the nuclear cluster is $>10^8M_\odot\,{\rm pc}^{-3}$. A million solar mass black hole can form within 100~Myr in the heaviest ($>10^7M_\odot$) and most compact ($<0.5~{\rm pc}$) nuclear clusters. We demonstrate that by today these resemble the observed range of nuclear clusters in dwarf galaxies and that there are potential gravitational-wave signatures of the massive black hole formation process., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, matches published version

In most cosmological models, the equation of state of the dark matter is assumed to be zero, which means that the dark matter is pressure-less or cold. While this hypothesis is based on the abundance of cold dark matter in the universe, however, there is no compelling reason to assume that the equation of state of dark matter is exactly zero. A more general approach would be to allow for a range of values for the dark matter equation of state and use the observational data to determine which values are most likely. With the increasing accuracy of experimental data, we have chosen to explore the possibility of interacting non-cold dark matter $-$ vacuum scenario, where the equation of state of the dark matter is constant but can take different values within a specific range. Using the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies and the CMB lensing reconstruction from the Planck legacy release, plus other non-CMB measurements, namely, the baryon acoustic oscillations distance measurements, and the Pantheon catalogue from Type Ia Supernovae, we have analyzed this scenario and found that a non-zero value for the dark matter equation of state is preferred with a confidence level of over 68\%. While this is not significant by itself, however, it does suggest that investigating the possibility of non-cold dark matter in the universe is worth exploring further to gain a better understanding of the nature of dark matter., Comment: 15 pages, 4 tables and 5 captioned figures; version accepted by JCAP

In this paper we consider the effects of adding curvature in extended cosmologies involving a free-to-vary neutrino sector and different parametrizations of Dark Energy (DE). We make use of the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization data, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Pantheon type Ia Supernovae data. Our main result is that a non-flat Universe cannot be discarded in light of the current astronomical data, because we find an indication for a closed Universe in most of the DE cosmologies explored in this work. Primordial black holes (PBHs) form from large-amplitude initial density fluctuations and may comprise some or all of the dark matter. If PBHs have a broadly extended mass spectrum, or in mixed PBH-particle dark matter scenarios, the extreme density fluctuations necessary to produce PBHs also lead to the formation of a much greater abundance of dark matter minihaloes that form during the radiation epoch with internal densities potentially of order $10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-3}$. We develop an analytic description of the formation of these ultradense haloes and use it to quantitatively compare PBH and halo distributions. PBHs that contribute only a per cent level fraction of the dark matter are accompanied by ultradense haloes that nevertheless comprise an order-unity fraction. These haloes would consist of either particle dark matter or much smaller PBHs. We study the global agreement between the most recent observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature and polarization anisotropies angular power spectra released by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the Planck satellite in various cosmological models that differ by the inclusion of different combinations of additional parameters. We present an updated data-analysis comparison of the most recent observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature anisotropies and polarization angular power spectra released by four different experiments: the Planck satellite on one side, and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACTPol) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT-3G), combined with the WMAP satellite 9-years observation data in order to be "Planck-independent" on the other side. We investigate in a systematic way 8 extended cosmological models that differ from the baseline $\Lambda$CDM case by the inclusion of many different combinations of additional degrees of freedom, with the aim of finding a viable minimal extended model that can bring all the CMB experiments in agreement. Our analysis provides several hints for anomalies in the CMB angular power spectra in tension with the standard cosmological model that persist even in these multi-parameter spaces. This indicates that either significant unaccounted-for systematics in the CMB data are producing biased results or that $\Lambda$CDM is an incorrect/incomplete description of Nature. We outline a concept for OWL-Moon, a 50-100m aperture telescope located on the surface of the Moon, to address three major areas in astronomy, namely the detection of biosignatures on habitable exoplanets, the geophysics of exoplanets, and cosmology. Such a large lunar telescope, when coupled with large Earth-based telescopes, would allow Intensity Interferometric measurements, leading to pico-arcsecond angular resolution. The inverse problem of extracting the stellar population content of galaxy spectra is analysed here from a basic standpoint based on information theory. By interpreting spectra as probability distribution functions, we find that galaxy spectra have high entropy, thus leading to a rather low effective information content. The highest variation in entropy is unsurprisingly found in regions that have been well studied for decades with the conventional approach. We target a set of six spectral regions that show the highest variation in entropy - the 4000A break being the most informative one. As a test case with real data, we measure the entropy of a set of high quality spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and contrast entropy-based results with the traditional method based on line strengths. The data are classified into star-forming (SF), quiescent (Q) and AGN galaxies, and show, independently of any physical model, that AGN spectra can be interpreted as a transition between SF and Q galaxies, with SF galaxies featuring a more diverse variation in entropy. The high level of entanglement complicates the determination of population parameters in a robust, unbiased way, and affect traditional methods that compare models with observations, as well as machine learning (especially deep learning) algorithms that rely on the statistical properties of the data to assess the variations among spectra. The Milky Way and the Local Sheet form a peculiar galaxy system in terms of the unusually low velocity dispersion in our neighbourhood and the seemingly high mass of the Milky Way for such an environment. Using the TNG300 simulation we searched for Milky Way analogues (MWA) located in cosmological walls with velocity dispersion in their local Hubble flow similar to the one observed around our galaxy. We find that MWAs in Local-Sheet analogues are rare, with one per (160-200 Mpc)^3 volume. We find that a Sheet-like cold environment preserves, amplifies, or simplifies environmental effects on the angular momentum of galaxies. In such sheets, there are particularly strong alignments between the sheet and galaxy spins; also, these galaxies have low spin parameters. These both may relate to a lack of mergers since wall formation. We hope our results will bring awareness of the atypical nature of the Milky Way-Local Sheet system. A change in the mass of the Galaxy with time will leave its imprint on the motions of the stars, with stars having radially outward (mass loss) or inward (mass accretion) bulk motions. Here we test the feasibility of using the mean radial motion of stars in the stellar halo to constrain the rate of change of mass in the Galaxy, for example, due to decay of dark matter into invisible dark sector particles or more conservatively from the settling of baryons. In the current $\Lambda$CDM paradigm of structure formation, the stellar halo is formed by accretion of satellites onto the host galaxy. Over time, as the satellites disrupt and phase mix, the mean radial motion $\langle V_{R} \rangle$ of the stellar halo is eventually expected to be close to zero. But most halos have substructures due to incomplete mixing of specific accretion events and this can lead to nonzero $\langle V_{R} \rangle$ in them. Using simulations, we measure the mean radial motion, $\langle V_{R} \rangle$, of stars in 13 $\Lambda$CDM stellar halos lying in a spherical shell of radius 30 kpc. We find that for most halos, the shell motion is quite small, with 75\% of halos having $\langle V_{R}\rangle \lesssim 1.2 \ {\rm km}s^{-1}$. When substructures are removed by using a clustering algorithm, $\langle V_{R}\rangle$ is reduced even further, with 75\% of halos having $\langle V_{R}\rangle \lesssim 0.6 \ {\rm km}s^{-1}$. A value of $\langle V_{R}\rangle \approx 0.6 \ {\rm km}s^{-1}$ can be attained corresponding to a galactic mass loss rate of 2\% per Gyr. We show that this can place constraints on dark matter decay parameters such as the decay lifetime and the kick velocity that is imparted to the daughter particle. The advent of all-sky stellar surveys involving millions to billions of stars is encouraging for detecting signatures of dark matter decay.

The 21cm line emitted by neutral hydrogen (HI) during the Dark Ages carries imprints of pristine primordial correlations. In models of inflation driven by a single, canonical scalar field, we show that a phase of ultra-slow-roll can lead to a null in all the primordial correlations at a specific wavenumber $k_\textrm{dip}$. Current gravitational-wave observations set the most stringent bounds on the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the solar mass range. This constraint, however, inherently relies on the merger rate predicted by PBH models. Previous analyses have focused mainly on two binary formation mechanisms: early Universe assembly out of decoupling from the Hubble expansion and dynamical capture in present-day dark matter structures. Using reaction rates of three-body processes studied in the astrophysical context, we show that, under conservative assumptions, three-body interactions in PBH halos efficiently produce binaries. Those binaries form at high redshift in Poisson-induced PBH small-scale structures and a fraction is predicted to coalesce and merge within the current age of the Universe, at odds with the dynamical capture scenario where they merge promptly. In general, we find that this channel predicts rates comparable to the dynamical capture scenario. However, binaries formed from three-body interactions do not significantly contribute to the overall PBH merger rate unless PBHs made up a dominant fraction of the dark matter above the solar mass range, a scenario that is ruled out by current constraints. Our results support strong bounds on the PBH abundance in the stellar mass range derived from Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory/Virgo/KAGRA observations. Finally, we show that both dynamical channels are always subdominant compared to early Universe assembly for PBH mergers in the asteroid mass range, while we expect it to become relevant in scenarios where PBHs are initially strongly clustered., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

We derive improved stellar luminosity limits on a generic light CP-even scalar field $S$ mixing with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson from the supernova SN1987A, the Sun, red giants (RGs) and white dwarfs (WDs). For the first time, we include the geometric effects for the decay and absorption of $S$ particles in the stellar interior. For SN1987A and the Sun, we also take into account the detailed stellar profiles. We find that a broad range of the scalar mass and mixing angle can be excluded by our updated astrophysical constraints. For instance, SN1987A excludes $1.0\times10^{-7} \lesssim \sin\theta \lesssim 3.0\times 10^{-5}$ and scalar mass up to 219 MeV, which covers the cosmological blind spot with a high reheating temperature. The updated solar limit excludes the mixing angle in the range of $1.5\times 10^{-12} < \sin\theta < 1$, with scalar mass up to 45 keV. The RG and WD limits are updated to $5.3\times 10^{-13} < \sin \theta < 0.39$ and $2.8\times 10^{-18} < \sin \theta < 1.8\times 10^{-4}$, with scalar mass up to 392 keV and 290 keV, respectively., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, calculations updated, more references

The primordial spectrum of fluctuations may present a large peak as a result of enhancing features during inflation. This may include, but is not limited to, bumps in the inflaton's potential, phases of ultra-slow-roll or turns in multi-field space. However, in many models, inflation does not end immediately after the enhancing feature and it is likely to continue with a second phase of slow-roll. We show that the resulting induced gravitational waves may probe the primordial spectrum from the second inflationary phase, even if its amplitude is too small to directly induce detectable gravitational waves. This is because, if there are sharp peaks in the primordial spectrum, the total gravitational wave spectrum is not simply the sum of gravitational waves induced by a peaked and scale-invariant primordial spectra separately, but cross terms from interaction between these modes also become important. We also find that such cross terms always have a characteristic slope. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. We apply the cross-correlation technique to infer the Hubble constant ($H_0$) of the Universe using gravitational wave (GW) sources without electromagnetic counterparts (dark sirens) from the third GW Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) and the photometric galaxy surveys 2MPZ and WISE-SuperCOSMOS, and combine these with the bright siren measurement of $H_0$ from GW170817. The posterior on $H_0$ with only dark sirens is uninformative due to the small number of well-localised GW sources. Using the eight well-localized dark sirens and the binary neutron star GW170817 with EM counterpart, we obtain a value of the Hubble constant $H_0= 75.4_{-6}^{+11}$ km/s/Mpc (median and 68.3$\%$ equal-tailed interval (ETI)) after marginalizing over the matter density and the GW bias parameters. This measurement is mostly driven by the bright siren measurement and any constraint from dark sirens is not statistically significant. The induced gravitational wave (GW) background from enhanced primordial scalar perturbations is one of the most promising observational consequences of primordial black hole (PBH) formation from inflation. We investigate the induced GW spectrum $\Omega_{\textrm{IGW}}$ from single-field inflation in the general ultra-slow-roll (USR) framework, restricting the peak frequency band to be inside $10^{-3}$-$1$ Hz and saturating PBH abundance to comprise all dark matter (DM) in the ultralight asteroid-mass window. By invoking successful baryogenesis driven by USR inflation, we verify the viable parameter space for the specific density ratio between baryons and PBH DM observed today, the so-called "cosmic coincidence." We show that the cosmic coincidence requirement bounds the spectral index $n_{\rm UV}$ in the high frequency limit, $\Omega_{\textrm{IGW}}(f\gg 1)\propto f^{-2n_{\rm UV}}$, into $0 < n_{\rm UV} < 1$, which implies that baryogenesis triggered by USR inflation for PBHs in the mass range of $10^{-16}$-$10^{-12} M_\odot$ can be tested by upcoming Advanced LIGO and Virgo data and next generation experiments such as LISA, Einstein Telescope, TianQin and DECIGO., Comment: v3: updated based on referee feedback 27 pages, 5 figures

Large galaxies harbor massive central black holes and their feedback causes a substantial impact in their evolution. Recently, observations suggested that dwarf galaxies might host black holes in their centers, but with lower masses (intermediate-mass black holes - IMBH). The impact of such IMBHs on the evolution of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), however, has not been so far properly analysed. In this work, we investigate the effects of an outflow from an IMBH on the gas dynamics in dSph galaxies by means of non-cosmological, three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, letting the galactic gas distribution evolve over 3 Gyr under the influence of the IMBH's outflow and supernova feedback. All simulations have a numerical resolution of 20.0 pc cell$^{-1}$. Two scenarios are considered to infer the differences in the propagation of the outflow, one with a homogeneous ISM and another one with inhomogeneities caused by supernovae feedback. A minimal initial speed and a minimal initial density are required for the outflow to propagate, with the values depending on the conditions of the medium. In an unperturbed medium, the outflow propagates freely in both directions with the same velocity (lower than the initial one), removing a small fraction of the gas from the galaxy (the exact fraction depends on the initial physical conditions of the outflow). However, in an inhomogeneous ISM, the impact of the outflow is substantially reduced, and its contribution to the removal of gas from the galaxy is almost negligible., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

A simple model for star formation based on supernova (SN) feedback and gravitational heating via the collapse of perturbations in gravitationally unstable disks reproduces the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation between the star formation rate (SFR) per unit area, $\Sigma_{SFR}$, and the gas surface density, $\Sigma_g$, remarkably well. The gas velocity dispersion, $\sigma_g$, is derived self-consistently in conjunction with $\Sigma_{SFR}$ and is found to match the observations. Gravitational instability triggers {"gravito-turbulence"} at the scale of the least stable perturbation mode, boosting $\sigma_g$ at $\Sigma_g> \, \Sigma_g^\textrm{thr}=50\, {\rm M}_\odot\, {\rm pc}^{-2}$, and contributing to the pressure needed to carry the disk weight vertically. $\Sigma_{SFR}$ is reduced to the observed level at $ \Sigma_g > \Sigma_g^\textrm{thr}$, whereas at lower surface densities, SN feedback is the prevailing energy source. Our proposed star formation recipes require efficiencies of order 1\%, and the Toomre parameter, $Q$, for the joint gaseous and stellar disk is predicted to be close to the critical value for marginal stability for $\Sigma_g< \, \Sigma_g^\textrm{thr}$, spreading to lower values and larger gas velocity dispersion at higher $\Sigma_g$., Comment: updated bibliography

How rare are extreme-spin primordial black holes? We show how, from an underlying distribution of PBH spin, extreme-value statistics can be used to quantify the rarity of spinning PBHs with Kerr parameter close to 1. Using the Peaks-Over-Threshold method, we show how the probability that a PBH forms with spin exceeding a sufficiently high threshold can be calculated using the Generalised Pareto Distribution. This allows us to estimate the average number of PBHs amongst which we can find a single PBH which formed with spin exceeding a high threshold. We found that the primordial spin distribution gives rise to exceedingly rare near-extremal spin PBHs at formation time: for typical parameter values, roughly up to one in a hundred million PBHs would be formed with spin exceeding the Thorne limit. We discuss conditions under which even more extreme-spin PBHs may be produced, including modifying the skewness and kurtosis of the spin distribution via a smooth transformation. We deduce from our calculations that, if indeed asteroid-mass PBHs above the current observational limit on evaporating PBHs of mass ~10^{17} g contribute significantly to the dark matter, it is likely that some of them could be near-extremal PBHs., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. If primordial black holes (PBHs) contribute more than 10 percent of the dark matter (DM) density, their energy density today is of the same order as that of the baryons. Such a cosmic coincidence might hint at a mutual origin for the formation scenario of PBHs and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Baryogenesis can be triggered by a sharp transition of the rolling rate of inflaton from slow-roll to (nearly) ultraslow-roll phases that produces large curvature perturbations for PBH formation in single-field inflationary models. Near-extremal primordial black holes stable over cosmological timescales may constitute a significant fraction of the dark matter. Due to their charge the coalescence rate of such black holes is enhanced inside clusters and the non-extremal merger remnants are prone to Hawking evaporation. We demonstrate that if these clusters of near-extremal holes contain a sufficient number of members to survive up to low redshift, the hard photons from continued evaporation begin to dominate the high energy diffuse background. We find that the diffuse photon flux can be observed for a monochromatic mass spectrum of holes lighter than about $10^{12}\rm g$. We place upper bounds on their abundance respecting the current bounds set by gamma ray telescopes. Furthermore, the gravitational wave background induced at the epoch of primordial black hole formation may be detectable by future planned and proposed ground-based and space-borne gravitational wave observatories operating in the mHz to kHz frequency range and can be an important tool for studying light charged primordial black holes over masses in the range $\rm 10^{12}g - 10^{19}g$., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Observations of $z \gtrsim 6$ quasars provide information on the early phases of the most massive black holes (MBHs) and galaxies. Current observations at sub-mm wavelengths trace cold and warm gas, and future observations will extend information to other gas phases and the stellar properties. The goal of this study is to examine the gas life cycle in a $z \gtrsim 6$ quasar: from accretion from the halo to the galaxy and all the way into the MBH, to how star formation and the MBH itself affect the gas properties. Using a very-high resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation of a $z=7$ quasar including state-of-the-art non-equilibrium chemistry, MBH formation, growth and feedback, we investigate the distribution of the different gas phases in the interstellar medium across cosmic time. We assess the morphological evolution of the quasar host using different tracers (star- or gas-based) and the thermodynamic distribution of the MBH accretion-driven outflows, finding that obscuration in the disc is mainly due to molecular gas, with the atomic component contributing at larger scales and/or above/below the disc plane. Moreover, our results also show that molecular outflows, if present, are more likely the result of gas being lifted near the MBH than production within the wind because of thermal instabilities. Finally, we also discuss how different gas phases can be employed to dynamically constrain the MBH mass, and argue that resolutions below $\sim 100$ pc yield unreliable estimates because of the strong contribution of the nuclear stellar component to the potential at larger scales., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 1 table, matches the accepted version

The ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation represents a class of single-field models with sharp deceleration of the rolling dynamics on small scales, leading to a significantly enhanced power spectrum of the curvature perturbations and primordial black hole (PBH) formation. Such a sharp transition of the inflationary background can trigger the coherent motion of scalar condensates with effective potentials governed by the rolling rate of the inflaton field. We show that a scalar condensate carrying (a combination of) baryon or lepton number can achieve successful baryogenesis through the Affleck-Dine mechanism from unconventional initial conditions excited by the USR transition. Current theoretical models predict a mass gap with a dearth of stellar black holes (BHs) between roughly $50\,M_\odot$ and $100\,M_\odot$, while, above the range accessible through massive star evolution, intermediate-mass BHs (IMBHs) still remain elusive. Repeated mergers of binary BHs, detectable via gravitational wave emission with the current LIGO/Virgo/Kagra interferometers and future detectors such as LISA or the Einstein Telescope, can form both mass-gap BHs and IMBHs. Here we explore the possibility that mass-gap BHs and IMBHs are born as a result of successive BH mergers in dense star clusters. In particular, nuclear star clusters at the centers of galaxies have deep enough potential wells to retain most of the BH merger products after they receive significant recoil kicks due to anisotropic emission of gravitational radiation. We show that a massive stellar BH seed can easily grow to $\sim 10^3 - 10^4\,M_\odot$ as a result of repeated mergers with other smaller BHs. We find that lowering the cluster metallicity leads to larger final BH masses. We also show that the growing BH spin tends to decrease in magnitude with the number of mergers, so that a negative correlation exists between final mass and spin of the resulting IMBHs. Primordial black holes (PBHs) are dark matter candidates that span broad mass ranges from $10^{-17}$ $M_\odot$ to $\sim 100$ $M_\odot$. We show that the stochastic gravitational wave background can be a powerful window for the detection of sub-solar mass PBHs and shed light on their formation channel via third-generation gravitational wave detectors such as Cosmic Explorer and the Einstein Telescope. By using the mass distribution of the compact objects and the redshift evolution of the merger rates, we can distinguish astrophysical sources from PBHs and will be able to constrain the fraction of sub-solar mass PBHs $\leq 1$ $M_\odot$ in the form of dark matter $f_{PBH}\leq 1\%$ at $68\%$ C.L. even for a pessimistic value of a binary suppression factor. In the absence of any suppression of the merger rate, constraints on $f_{PBH}$ will be less than $0.001\%$. Furthermore, we will be able to measure the redshift evolution of the PBH merger rate with about $1\%$ accuracy, making it possible to uniquely distinguish between the Poisson and clustered PBH scenarios., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. The expected event rate of lensed gravitational wave sources scales with the merger rate at redshift $z\geq 1$, where the optical depth for lensing is high. It is commonly assumed that the merger rate of the astrophysical compact objects is closely connected with the star formation rate, which peaks around redshift $z\sim 2$. However, a major source of uncertainty is the delay time between the formation and merger of compact objects. We explore the impact of delay time on the lensing event rate. We show that as the delay time increases, the peak of the merger rate of gravitational wave sources gets deferred to a lower redshift. This leads to a reduction in the event rate of the lensed events which are detectable by the gravitational wave detectors. We show that for a delay time of around $10$ Gyr or larger, the lensed event rate can be less than one per year for the design sensitivity of LIGO/Virgo. We also estimate the merger rate for lensed sub-threshold for different delay time scenarios, finding that for larger delay times the number of lensed sub-threshold events is reduced, whereas for small-delay time models they are significantly more frequent.
