The temperature dependence of the drain current is an important parameter in thin-film transistors. In this paper, we propose that in source-gated transistors (SGTs), this temperature dependence can be controlled and tuned by varying the length of the source electrode. SGTs comprise a reverse biased potential barrier at the source which controls the current. As a result, a large activation energy for the drain current may be present which, although useful in specific temperature sensing applications, is in general deleterious in many circuit functions. With support from numerical simulations with Silvaco Atlas, we describe how increasing the length of the source electrode can be used to reduce the activation energy of SGT drain current, while maintaining the defining characteristics of SGTs: low saturation voltage, high output impedance in saturation, and tolerance to geometry variations. In this study, we apply the dual current injection modes to obtain drain currents with high and low activation energies and propose mechanisms for their exploitation in future large-area integrated circuit designs. Electronic skins (e-skins), which can seamlessly adapt and adhere to the body to mimic the functionality of human skin, are a rapidly emerging research area. Such e-skins have the potential to revolutionize artificial prosthetics, robotics, human–machine interfacing, and health monitoring applications. Powering the e-skin is a critical challenge at present due to strict performance criteria, including flexibility, stretchability, mobility, and autonomous operation. One of the most promising approaches to overcome some of these challenges is to scavenge energy from the human body’s movements and its surrounding environment. This paper outlines some of the key potential developments that enable energy harvesting through mechanical, thermal affects, and low light sources, as well as energy management and storage technologies, which could lead toward the construction of autonomous e-skin modules and self-powered sensing systems. A general method for mapping the equipotential profile surrounding a conductive cylindrically symmetric high aspect ratio structure, such as a carbon nanotube or a Spindt tip, is devised. The surface of the object is replaced by a discrete set of charges located on the symmetry axis. The overall electrostatic potential must satisfy a set of boundary conditions imposed on the original surface. The optimum number of charges is determined through an iterative self-validating process such that the obtained equipotential mimics the surface of the object. The method is exemplified by calculating the electric field enhancement factor for rounded cones and cylinders resembling Spindt tips and carbon nanotubes, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The local electric fields in the vicinity of the tips of metallic nanotubes are calculated. The variation in the field enhancement factor as a function of internanotube separation, anode-substrate separation, and height and radius of the nanotube is reported. Calculations show that the field induced electron emission current, based on the Fowler–Nordheim theory, is reduced when the intertube separation is less than twice the height of the nanotube. The location of the anode plane is shown to be important when the anode-substrate separation is less than three times the height of the nanotube. The results also predict that the macroscopic threshold field for electron emission should decrease as the anode-substrate separation D decreases. For separations greater than three times the height of the nanotube, the threshold field becomes constant and independent of anode-cathode geometry. Conversely, the manner in which applied electric field is defined is crucial if the results are be understood better. Experimental field emission measurements made on an isolated carbon nanotube confirms the need for a new interpretation of the electric field around stand alone point emitters. Amorphous carbon films with sp3 bonded carbon fractions over 70% are deposited by pulsed laser deposition. However, the optical bandgap obtained from optical transmittance and spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis shows the values to be below 1.0 eV. A wide range of measurements such as electron energy loss spectroscopy, visible Raman, spectroscopic ellipsometry, optical transmittance, and electrical characterization are performed to elucidate the bonding configurations that dictate microstructural, optical and electrical properties, and their linkage to band structure changes. It is found that stress-induced electronic localized states play an important role in the physical properties of the films deposited. The optical bandgap is shown not to be a good measure of the electrical bandgap, especially for high electric field conduction in these tetrahedral amorphous carbon films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A solution based sonochemical synthesis method for ZnO rods is presented with a resulting growth rate in excess of 15 times faster than previously reported. Such material is solution processable and could be exploited in the fabrication of transparent conductors and/or large area electronics via inkjet printing methods or solution based self-assembly techniques. To understand the crystal structure and defects chemistry, the as-synthesized wurtzite crystal structures were compared and contrasted with rods grown by the more traditional and well characterized hydrothermal growth method. Fluorescence spectra were recorded and the emission characteristics correlated with the structural and conductive properties of the ZnO rods. In particular, the sonochemical crystals appear to have a higher degree of order with fewer defects. This study represents a first step toward the tailoring of the electronic properties of ZnO rods. In particular, we will concentrate on the influence that native defects have on electrical conduction and on photoluminescence. Furthermore, we show how the intensity of the ultrasonic power exploited in this synthesis has a direct influence on the crystal quality as revealed by a comparative study. An optimum value between 30% and 35% of the maximum amplitude of a 20 kHz ultrasonic probe was found to give the best conditions for the growth of crystals with fewer defects density, while at ca. 25% of the maximum amplitude we observed the higher intensities for the fluorescence spectra both in the ultraviolet and in the visible range.
