Exposure to organophosphorus compounds (OPs) may cause psychiatric, neurologic, biochemical, and cardiovascular abnormalities. Neurotoxicity of OP compounds is primarily due to irreversibly inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme both centrally and peripherally. Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is a widely used OP classified as moderately toxic. Previously, it has been shown that CPF administration, given every other day to adult rats, impairs spatial memory and prepulse inhibition associated with brain AChE inhibition. Our group also found that intermittent treatment with CPF, simulating occupational exposure, impairs the cardiorespiratory reflexes and causes cardiac hypertrophy. Thereby, we aimed to examine whether subchronic and intermittent administration of CPF would affect the behavioural (freezing) and cardiovascular (mean arterial pressure, MAP; heart rate, HR) responses elicited during contextual fear conditioning (CFC) and extinction. Wistar adult male rats were injected with sublethal and intermittent CPF doses (4 and 7 mg/kg) three times a week for one month. Two days after the last injection, a range of tests were performed to assess depression (sucrose preference), anxiety (elevated plus-maze, EPM), locomotion (open field, OF), and conditioned fear expression and extinction. Separate cohorts of animals were euthanized to measure plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), erythrocyte AChE, brain AChE activity, and markers of oxidative-nitrosative stress. Intermittent CPF treatment did not affect sucrose preference. CPF (4 and 7 mg/kg) reduced open-arms exploration in the EPM, suggesting an anxiogenic effect. The higher dose of CPF decreased the total distance travelled in the OFT, suggesting motor impairment. After a seven-day CPF-free washout period, CPF (7 mg/kg) increased the tachycardic response without affecting freezing behaviour in the CFC extinction session. CPF 7 mg/kg decreased AChE activity in the hippocampus, pre-frontal cortex and brainstem 72 after the last administration whilst transiently increasing oxidative-nitrosative stress specifically in the brainstem. Overall, our results outlined the behavioural, autonomic and biochemical abnormalities caused by an intermittent dosing regimen of CPF that elicits brain AChE inhibition and brain oxidative-nitrosative stress. We investigated the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in dogs in rural areas of the municipality of Painel, Santa Catarina, Brazil. For this, 91 canine feces samples were collected from 82 farms between August, 2017 and January, 2018. These fecal materials were processed using the techniques of spontaneous sedimentation, centrifugation-floatation in zinc sulfate and Ziehl-Neelsen staining. A questionnaire in the form of an interview was administered to the dogs' owner and information about the farm and the main care provided for the dogs was obtained. Among 91 sampled dogs, 27 (29.7%) were positive for at least one parasite species. Ancylostoma was the most prevalent genus (16.5%), followed by Giardia duodenalis (14.3%), Trichuris vulpis (6.6%), Toxocara canis (5.5%), Entamoeba spp. (4.8%), Cryptosporidium spp. (3.3%) and Taeniidae (1.1%). Most dogs do not receive veterinarian care and rarely received antiparasitic treatment. They were free to roam and had free access to animal remains and garbage, which was reflected in the significant associations with the occurrence of parasites that were found. We conclude that rural dogs harbor gastrointestinal parasites, but that their owners are unaware of the risks that these parasites can bring to human health.

The increasing pollution of aquatic environments due to old and emerging contaminants requires the development of integrative methods for exposure assessment. Internal concentrations are a reliable way to estimate total exposure of contaminants originated from different routes (water, sediment, and food). We developed a protocol to evaluate the concentration of a dye, C.I. Disperse Red 1, in the hemolymph of Parhyale hawaiensis, a marine amphipod. LOD and LOQ were satisfactory to detect the dye in all hemolymph samples. The concentration detected in the hemolymph varied related to exposure time and dye concentration (0.003 to 0.086 μg mL -1 ). Polynomial regression model was the best fit. The protocol was reliable to detect and quantify dye exposure in marine amphipods and can be considered for future assessments of estuarine and marine regions under the influence of dye processing plants. Previous studies have demonstrated the presence of precursors and coupling agents in wastewater from hair dyeing processes. The complex reaction involved in the oxidation of these compounds can generate extremely hazardous sub-products, leading to an increase in the mutagenicity and toxicity of wastewater. Without proper treatment, this highly toxic wastewater may find its way into the drinking water treatment plant. The present work aimed to investigate the main products generated after the oxidation reaction involving p-toluenediamine (PTD) and p-aminophenol (PAP) - precursors that widely used in the composition of commercial permanent hair dyes, under experimental conditions close to the routine hair dyeing process (in the presence and absence of hydrogen peroxide in ammoniacal medium), using spectroscopic techniques. The study also investigated the mutagenicity and toxicity of the products formed in the hairdressing wash water and conducted detection analysis to determine the presence of the precursors and Bandrowski's Base Derivative (BBD) in samples of wastewater, surface and drinking water using HPLC-DAD and linear voltammetry techniques. Based on this investigation, we identified several PTD and PAP self-oxidation products and eleven sub-products derived from the reaction between PTD and PAP. Assays conducted using Salmonella typhimurium YG1041, with and without activation-induced rat liver metabolism (S9), indicated mutagenicity of the reaction products in concentrations above 10.0 μg μL -1 . Background: Previous systematic reviews showed additional benefit of adjuvant bisphosphonates (BP) in the treatment of periodontitis. In contrast, it is unclear the effect of BP in patients with diabetes and smokers, its pooled effect when administered locally or systemically is also unknown., Objectives: This study aimed to systematically review the literature about the use of BP as adjuvant to nonsurgical scaling and root planning (SRP)., Methodology: This study followed the PRISMA guideline. This study included randomized clinical trials that administered locally or systemically BPs as adjuvant for periodontal treatment. Five databases were used. Meta-analyses were performed, using the pooled mean differences (MD) for clinical attachment level (CAL) and probing pocket depth (PPD). Standard mean difference (SMD) was used for radiographic assessment (RADIO). Subgroup analyses were performed for locally delivered meta-analyses, considering diabetes and smoking exposure., Results: Thirteen studies were included. It was showed MD of 1.52 ​mm (95%CI: 0.97-2.07) and 1.44 ​mm (95%CI: 1.08-1.79) for PPD reduction and CAL gain, respectively, for locally delivered BP. BP was not able to provide significant improvements in smokers (subgroup analysis) when considering CAL (MD: 1.37; 95%CI: -0.17-2.91) and PPD (MD: 1.35; 95%CI: -0.13-2.83). Locally delivered BP also improved significantly the RADIO assessments (SMD: 4.34; 95%CI: 2.94-5.74). MD for systemically administered BP was 0.40 ​mm (95%CI: 0.21-0.60), 0.51 ​mm (95%CI: 0.19-0.83) and 1.05 (95%CI: 0.80-1.31) for PPD, CAL and RADIO, respectively., Conclusion: The administration of BP in adjunct to SRP may result in additional clinical effects., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflict of interest related to this study. The present work investigated the autoxidation reaction of p-toluenediamine (PTD) - a precursor - widely used in permanent hair dyeing formulation, under experimental conditions close to the hair dyeing process (oxygen and/or peroxide in ammoniacal medium), by chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. In additional, evaluated the mutagenicity of the PTD oxidation products and the presence of PTD and this products in wastewater from beauty salon, as well as in surface water and drinking water using HPLC coupled to a diode array detector and linear scan voltammetry. Through this study, it was possible the identification of semi-quinonediimine, quinonediimine, dimers (derived from toluenediamine), and trimer radical identified as Bandrowski's Base derivative (BBD) formed during autoxidation of PTD. Salmonella Typhimurium YG1041 assay with and without metabolic activation induced rat-liver (S9) indicated mutagenic activity for BBD. Levels of PTD were determined by the standard addition method in samples collected from the wastewater of a beauty salon, as well as from the water before and after treatment in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) reached concentrations of 2.08 ± 0.21, 2.36 ± 0.10 × 10 -3 , and 1.77 ± 0.13 × 10 -3  mg L -1 , respectively. Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is an antibiotic from sulfonamides class widely used in veterinary medicine and reported in wastewater and sewage. Thus, it is essential to study technologies to reduce SMZ present in the aquatic environment. Anaerobic bioreactors are a low-cost technology applied for wastewater treatment. The objective of this paper is to study kinetics parameters related to SMZ removal using a horizontal flow-anaerobic immobilized biomass reactor (HAIB) and to evaluate its transformation products formed during this treatment. The bioreactor was operated at mesophilic condition with a hydraulic retention time of 12 h. The removal of SMZ was evaluated at three different concentrations: 200 ng L -1 (phase I), 400 ng l -1 (phase II) and 600 ng L -1 (phase III). The apparent first-order removal constant obtained for chemical oxygen demand was 0.885 ± 0.094 h -1 while SMZ showed a removal constant of 0.356 h -1 . SMZ was removed with an efficiency of 56.0 ± 13.0 % (phase I); 62.0 ± 12.0 % (phase II) and 62.0 ± 6.00 % (phase III). Seven transformation products were detected and one of these with m/z 233 is reported for the first-time. Twenty-six newborn lambs were evaluated for 21 weeks, from birth to slaughter, to assess their plasma anti-Oestrus ovis immunoglobulin (IgG) using the ELISA technique. On the last day of sampling, all the lambs were slaughtered and O. ovis larvae were recovered, quantified and identified according to the larval stage. High levels of IgG were observed over the first three weeks of life, thus indicating that antibodies are transferred via colostrum from ewes to lambs. Afterwards, the antibody levels declined progressively until the lambs were 11 weeks of age and subsequently started to increase again when they were around 13 weeks of age, reaching the apex on the last week of sampling. All the lambs were parasitized with different larval stages of O. ovis, with an average of 39 larvae per lamb, and the intensity of the infestation ranged from 10 to 97 larvae. However, there was non-significant correlation coefficients between IgG levels and O. ovis larval burden (P > 0.05). In conclusion, although the lambs became infested with O. ovis at an early age, the larval burden was not associated with specific IgG levels.

Azo dyes are known as a group of substances with DNA damage potential that depend on the nature and number of azo groups connected to aromatic rings (benzene and naphthalene), chemical properties, e.g. solubility and reactive functional groups, which significantly affect their toxicological and ecological risks. In this paper, we used in vitro models to evaluate the metabolism of selected textile dyes: Disperse Red 73 (DR 73), Disperse Red 78 (DR 78) and Disperse Red 167 (DR 167). To evaluate the mutagenic potential of the textile dyes, the Salmonella mutagenicity assay (Ames test) with strains TA 98 and TA 100 in the presence and absence of the exogenous metabolic system (S9) was used. DR73 was considered the most mutagenic compound, inducing both replacement base pairs (TA 100) and also changing frameshift (TA 98) mutations that are reduced in the presence of the S9 mixture. Furthermore, we used rat liver microsomes in the same experimental conditions of the S9 mixture to metabolize the dyes and the resultant solutions were analyzed using a liquid chromatography coupled to a quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to investigate the metabolites formed by the in vitro biotransformation. Based on this experiment, we detected and identified two biotransformation products for each textile dye substrate analyzed. Furthermore, to evaluate the interaction and reactivity of these compounds with DNA, theoretical calculations were also carried out. The results showed that the chemical reaction occurred preferentially at the azo group and the nitro group, indicating that there was a reduction in these groups by the CYP P450 enzymes presented in the rat microsomal medium. Our results clearly demonstrated that the reduction of these dyes by biological systems is a great environmental concern due to increased genotoxicity for the body of living beings, especially for humans., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Water quality criteria to protect aquatic life are not available for most disperse dyes which are often used as commercial mixtures in textile coloration. In this study, the acute and chronic toxicity of the commercial dye Disperse Red 1 (DR1) to eight aquatic organisms from four trophic levels was evaluated. A safety threshold, i.e. Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC), was derived based on the toxicity information of the commercial product and the purified dye. This approach was possible because the toxicity of DR1 was accounting for most of the toxicity of the commercial mixture. A long-term PNEC of 60 ng L(-1) was proposed, based on the most sensitive chronic endpoint for Daphnia similis. A short-term PNEC of 1800 ng L(-1) was proposed based on the most sensitive acute endpoint also for Daphnia similis. Both key studies have been evaluated with the new "Criteria for Reporting and Evaluating ecotoxicity Data" (CRED) methodology, applying more objective criteria to assess the quality of toxicity tests, resulting in two reliable and relevant endpoints with only minor restrictions. HPLC-MS/MS was used to quantify the occurrence of DR1 in river waters of three sites, influenced by textile industry discharges, resulting in a concentration range of 50-500 ng L(-1). The risk quotients for DR1 obtained in this work suggest that this dye can pose a potential risk to freshwater biota.
