Using by-products for flour production is an alternative to optimise agricultural production through fully using raw materials, avoiding waste, and contributing to production sustainability. From this perspective, controlled germination is a process used to promote changes in seed composition, aiming to obtain a determined nutritional profile, and meet the specific demands of the market. Therefore, the present work aimed to produce cookies with the partial replacement of wheat flour with germinated pumpkin seed flours (GPSF) of three varieties (Crown, Jacarezinho, and Italian), evaluate their microbiological and sensory characteristics, proximate composition, mineral profile, and texture. Four cookie formulations were prepared: the control formulation, with 100% wheat flour; F1, by replacing wheat flour with 1.5% GPSF of the pumpkin variety Crown; F2, by replacing wheat flour with 1.5% GPSF of the pumpkin variety Jacarezinho; and F3, by replacing wheat flour with 1.5% GPSF of the pumpkin variety Italian. GPSF incorporation resulted in cookies with good acceptability by consumers. Moreover, GPSF incorporation changed the composition of compound cookies in relation to the control sample. This modification depended on the pumpkin variety used. GPSF incorporation resulted in cookies with high acceptability rates, similar to the control sample. Among the cookies formulated with GPSF, the products with the Italian variety showed the highest acceptability. The partial replacement of wheat flour with germinated seed flour of pumpkin could have the potential for cookie preparation, and is a viable alternative for the bakery industry. - Abstract
Background: Improving stroke services is critical for reducing the global stroke burden. The World Stroke Organization–World Health Organization–Lancet Neurology Commission on Stroke conducted a survey of the status of stroke services in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared to high-income countries. Methods: Using a validated World Stroke Organization comprehensive questionnaire, we collected and compared data on stroke services along four pillars of the stroke quadrangle (surveillance, prevention, acute stroke, and rehabilitation) in 84 countries across World Health Organization regions and economic strata. The World Health Organization also conducted a survey of non-communicable diseases in 194 countries in 2019. Results: Fewer surveillance activities (including presence of registries, presence of recent risk factors surveys, and participation in research) were reported in low-income countries than high-income countries. The overall global score for prevention was 40.2%. Stroke units were present in 91% of high-income countries in contrast to 18% of low-income countries (p < 0.001). Acute stroke treatments were offered in ∼ 60% of high-income countries compared to 26% of low-income countries (p = 0.009). Compared to high-income countries, LMICs provided less rehabilitation services including in-patient rehabilitation, home assessment, community rehabilitation, education, early hospital discharge program, and presence of rehabilitation protocol. Conclusions: There is an urgent need to improve access to stroke units and services globally especially in LMICs. Countries with less stroke services can adapt strategies from those with better services. This could include establishment of a framework for regular monitoring of stroke burden and services, implementation of integrated prevention activities and essential acute stroke care services, and provision of interdisciplinary care for stroke rehabilitation.

Violation of scientific recommendations and malpractices in pesticide usage is much debated due to the rapid increase in chronic kidney disease in agricultural areas of Sri Lanka. The Government of Sri Lanka has banned the use of several hazardous pesticides based on their harmful effects in recent years. In this context, this study was conducted to assess the present situation and practices of pesticide usage in rice cultivation after these restrictions. A questionnaire survey and face-to-face interviews were conducted in 2019/2020 with 174 farmers selected through a multi-stage cluster sampling method in rice cultivation areas in the Trincomalee district. The WHO hazard class Ia and Ib, prohibited in the country were not applied in the study area. However, 63% of pesticides belong to the class II (moderately hazardous) category, which is not highly recommended by FAO. In addition, we identified poor agricultural practices, such as violations of scientific recommendations (> 50%), not using protective gears when applying pesticides (63%), combining two or more pesticides to produce a mixture (26%), poor control of dumping empty pesticide containers (> 80%), drinking water without checking the quality (55%), and not consulting agriculture extension service (82%). However, young farmers are more aware of the consequences of malpractices in the use of pesticides, while educational level has no significant influence. In this regard, it is necessary to create public awareness of the hazards of pesticide misuse through awareness campaigns, regular monitoring, and follow-up mechanisms at the field level, and regular assessment of pesticide residuals in the ecosystem. Further, farmers should also be encouraged to practice organic agriculture and integrated pest management, which will help to promote sustainable development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GALACTOSIDASES ,AMMONIUM sulfate ,FUNGAL colonies ,MOLECULAR weights ,ENZYMES - Abstract
β-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) is an industrially important enzyme. It can catalyse two different types of reactions, namely lactose hydrolysis and transgalactosylation. β-galactosidase enzyme production by Thielaviopsis ethacetica, was investigated and the enzyme was partially purified and characterized in the present study. Qualitative assay for the pre β-galactosidase activity indicated the formation of water insoluble blue-green colour, dichloro-dibromo-indigo zone towards the edges of the fungal colony after a 72-hour incubation period. Quantitative assay recorded a maximum enzyme activity of 0.599 U/mL at 72 hours. The enzyme was partially purified from the crude enzyme using ammonium sulphate precipitation and dialysis. Fraction 40-60 % (fraction 2) had the highest specific enzymes activity of 1.65 U/mg with 8.68 purification fold and 28.3 % recovery. SDS-PAGE analysis of fraction 2 resulted three separate protein bands above 40 kDa. The protein band corresponding to 50 kDa molecular weight was confirmed as β-galactosidase. The optimum temperature and pH for the enzyme was at 60 ̊ C and 7.0, respectively. The present study reveals the fungal strain Thielaviopsis ethacetica with β-galactosidase activity. To our knowledge this is the first report about β-galactosidase activity of the strain T. ethacetica. This investigation suggests the potential use of this species in industrial applications. This work aims to analyze the effects of niobium on the bioactivity of a titanium, nickel, aluminum, and niobium alloy obtained by the Plasma Skull Push Pull process (PSPP). Titanium alloys, such as NiTinol (NiTi), are metallic biomaterials that have wide application in health and surgical prostheses. In this work the microstructural and bioactivity characteristics of the alloys are evaluated. The addition of aluminum improves alloy ductility and reduces its cost. The addition of niobium favors the hydroxyapatite nucleation. Therefore, the addition of the combination of the two elements contributes to lower cost and better alloy bioactivity.

A trial was conducted to evaluate the inclusion of natural pigments, alfalfa meal (FA), annatto (U) and sugar beet (B) in a diet based on peeled and unpolished whole rice and soybean meal. A total of 100 70-day-old Japanese quails were used. Treatments were T1: control diet (peeled and unpolished whole rice in full replacement of corn); T2: T1 + 4% FA; T3: T1 + 8% FA; T4: T1 + 12% FA; T5: T1 + 4% U; T6: T1 + 8% U; T7: T1 + 12% U; T8: T1 + 4% B; T9: T1 + 8% B; and T10: T1 + 12% B. After 15 days of trial yolk colour was measured with a colorimeter. Alfalfa meal decreased brightness and the colour ranged from green to yellowish. Additionally, colour saturation was augmented with increased levels of alfalfa meal in the diets (P<0.05). The increased concentration of annatto in the diets reduced the brightness of yolks and increased the red and colour saturation (P<0.05), and the sugar beet had no effect in any of the yolk parameters measured (P>0.05). Alfalfa meal and annatto may be used as natural pigments to Japanese quails diets based on peeled and unpolished whole rice up to the level of 12% inclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This research intended to assess satisfaction of urban patients on the use of telehealth over the last two years; mainly across the Covid-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. Most of the telehealth users were the younger patients, and they were generally satisfied with the technical quality, serviced delivery as well as the overall experience. However, telehealth was utilized mainly for delivery of a limited range of services. In the future, Telehealth seems to have great potential to exist as a supplement to conventional appointments. TUNGSTATES ,AMOXICILLIN ,CORROSION & anti-corrosives ,CELLULOSE acetate ,SAFETY film - Abstract
Sodium tungstate and amoxicillin were used separately or combined in a solution containing 0.05 mol l
−1 NaCl or inserted into cellulose acetate films as a corrosion inhibition method for American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 1020 steel. The electrochemical behavior of AISI 1020 steel was characterized using open-circuit potential, anodic polarization and electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy. The inhibitor effect of tungstate anions was proved, and its combination with amoxicillin was considered inferior when tungstate was used alone. This behavior was attributed to weaker adsorption of amoxicillin when compared with the adsorption of tungstate anion both deposited on the alloy and into the cellulose acetate film on the steel. This study was conducted to assess the awareness on family history and the practice of preventive methods among Advanced Level students on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The increasing prevalence of NCDs in Sri Lanka has led to many preventive programs. And evidence suggests that preventive measures should commence from the teen years itself. Objectives of the study were to assess the awareness on family history of Non-Communicable diseases among Advanced Level students in Gampaha and a description of their exercise and dietary practices. A descriptive cross sectional study on Advanced Level students in a private tuition class in Gampaha was done. A sample of 170 was selected out of 398 students using Stratified random sampling with using subject streams as strata. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Family history prevalence for maternal Diabetes(DM) is 18.2 %, Hypertension(HT) 13.5%, Ischemic heart diseases(IHD) 14.1%, Hyperlipidemia(HL) 15.2% and for paternal DM 17.6%, HT 9.42%, IHD 15.8%, HL 16.4%. 51.8% thought family history was not an important factor. 27.1% to 51.2% students never attempted to control the risk food items. 49.4% did not exercise at all and 53.5% did not play any continuous sport. 78.2% did not attempt to control weight and 57.1% did not know what BMI means. 39.4% to 48.8% students did not know whether they were at risk of getting a particular disease. The analytical statistics revealed significant difference between the subject stream and the awareness of the importance of family history (p=0.009), doing exercises (p=0.001), Gender was not found to be having any notable significant influence on any studied factors. The study revealed that in general there is a poor awareness about the importance of family history among the advanced level students. Further it revealed that generally the knowledge on NCD's were poor and the preventive measures were not practiced by a significant number of students. Therefore it implies that the preventive campaigns need to address this population fraction on the above issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was conducted to assess the physical health problems among government school teachers due to their occupation. Many preventive measures are being taken by the educational department of Sri Lanka to safeguard teachers' physical well being within the academic premises. It was highlighted by previous researches, that the negligence of preventive measures by younger teaching staff has lead to future circumstances. Objectives of the study were to assess the occupational, physical health issues among government school teachers in Tangalle division, Hambanthota district, Sri lanka; and to Identify different types of occupational health issues and possible causes for them to occur. A descriptive study on teachers from H/Wijayaba National college, Hungama, Hambanthota district, Sri Lanka was done, using a number of 72 conveniently selected samples. Data was collected using a self administered questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Out of 72 teachers who were been assessed, 38% was over 10 years work experience and all have experienced minimum one physical issue at least one physical issue. Out of the 26% of the teachers whose experience was 1-5 years, 45% of them to have no physical problems at all. Out of whole population 34% thought there was a relationship between teaching as a job and physical health problems while 46% thought the opposite. Out of all the health issues identified 23% was gastritis, 20.5% was knee pain, 17.8% was back pain, and 13.7% wheezing. Out of the teachers who had back pain 76.92% were found to be standing for prolonged periods; 76.92% used black boards regularly and 69.23% did paper work for prolonged durations. Out of those who had knee and shoulder pain, 93.33% were always standing for prolonged periods; 73.33% used blackboards and 80% did paper work. Out of those with wheezing 80% used blackboards, 70 % were exposed to dust and 80% were always exposed to chalk dust. The study revealed that majority of the government teachers are victims of a common set of physical health issues. And those common physical health problems among teachers are directly and indirectly influenced by the occupational habits and activities. This study also brought up the need to address the upgrading of preventing measures, therefore it enlarges the necessity to establish informative campaigns among government schools.
