Abstract

A sociocognitive model of distal and proximal predictors of empathic judgments was tested among 100 physicians. The authors hypothesized that physician perceived control would affect empathy ratings via physician communication style. Specifically, physicians with high perceived control would use more open communication and be rated as more empathic. Physicians with low perceived control would use a controlling communication style and be rated as less empathic. Physicians completed a medical attribution questionnaire prior to a structured patient consultation exercise, during which patients and assessors rated physician empathy. The exercise was audiotaped, transcribed, and content analyzed for verbal behaviors. Support was found for the hypotheses; however, patients, but not medical assessors, associated empathy with reassurance and provision of medical information. Abstract

Abstract

Boots The Chemists Ltd of the UK has introduced psychometric testing as part of its recruitment procedures for sales personnel. The retailer designed a questionnaire based on attribution theory which deals with how people explain the cause of an event. Company officials believed that sales people could be screened on the basis of their attributional style, that is, the way they explain why certain work-related events occur. The questionnaire was based on research showing that successful salespeople are more likely to believe that they can influence sales volume. The same salespeople are also more likely to be proactive in attaining sales targets. Results of the psychometric tests done at Boots stores confirmed these research findings. The questionnaire has been made a standard component of the selection process for sales personnel.
