Ultraviolet filters (UVFs) are contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) produced and used in large quantities worldwide. They are constituents of a large number of personal care and hygiene products and other consumer goods. Benzophenones, such as benzophenone-3 (BP-3), benzophenone-4 (BP-4) and avobenzone (AVO), are among the most used. These compounds are characterized by being photo-stable and lipophilic. Although it is highly known the lipophilicity of these compounds, their monitoring in porous media is centered in the aqueous phase. Nevertheless, their high logKow make foreseeable the accumulation in more lipophilic phases such as biofilm or sedimentary organic matter. For that, in this work we have highly characterized a Managed Aquifer Recharge system with a very intensive monitoring of benzophenones and transformation products in the three phases: water, biofilm and sedimentary organic matter. Furthermore, we have contrasted our results with a numerical model, which was based on the partition of UVFs under equilibrium conditions. Our results show that biofilm acted as an additional environmental compartment favoring the retention and degradation of UVFs in porous media. Indeed, it played a central role in the fate of these compounds, controlling both sorption and biodegradation. With this we believe that the current understanding of the organic compounds fate should incorporate it as a new compartment capable of bio-accumulate these compounds.

Background/Aims Interleukin-17 inhibitors (anti-IL-17) have provided an additional treatment option in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). This study aims to describe the patient profile, treatment patterns and persistence in PsA patients treated with ixekizumab and secukinumab in a real-life setting. Methods A multicentre, retrospective study was conducted at 8 Spanish hospitals. Three cohorts of adult PsA patients, newly initiating treatment with an anti-IL-17A (secukinumab 150mg [SECU150], secukinumab 300mg [SECU300], ixekizumab [IXE]), between January 2019 and March 2020 were included. Data of patients exposed to anti-IL-17 drugs with a follow-up visit were collected until March 2021. Demographic and clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and persistence were analysed descriptively. Continuous data were presented as mean (standard deviation [SD]) and categorical variables as frequencies with percentage. Persistence rates at 3/6/12 months were calculated. Results A total of 221 PsA patients were analysed (SECU150: 103 [46.6%], SECU300: 38 [17.2%] and IXE: 80 [36.2%]). Treatment patterns differed by clinical characteristics: SECU150 patients presented more moderate PsA and less peripheral joint damage, while SECU300 patients included a higher rate of enthesitis and active psoriasis. IXE patients showed a longer time since PsA diagnosis, with more frequent co-morbidities, joint damage and psoriasis diagnosed. 77.8% of patients were previously treated with csDMARDs in monotherapy and 72.9% with bDMARDs/tsDMARDs (93.8% IXE, 68.4% SECU300 and 58.3% SECU150). Mean number of previous bDMARDS/tsDMARDS were 2.4 (1.5), 1.7 (0.9) and 1.6 (1.0), respectively. Overall, persistence to anti-IL-17 treatments was found in 97.2%, 88.4% and 81.0% of patients at 3, 6 and 12 months, respectively, being 83.1% for SECU150, 64.5% for SECU300 and 86.4% for IXE at one year. The most frequent reason for discontinuation was lack of effectiveness (13.8%). Conclusion Most PsA patients treated with anti-IL-17 in Spain had a moderate to severe disease, high peripheral joint damage and skin involvement and had received at least 1 previous bDMARD/tsDMARD. More than 80% of patients with one year follow-up were persistent to anti-IL-17 treatments, observing the highest rate with IXE, followed by SECU150 and SECU300. Disclosure B. Groundwater is the main source of freshwater in the European Union, yet freshwaters are polluted by organic contaminants if contaminants are not efficiently removed in wastewater treatment plants. Here we review the occurrence, fate, and risk assessment of organic contaminants included in the surface water watch list of the European groundwater bodies. This list includes 15 compounds: the hormones estrone, 17˗β˗estradiol and 17˗α˗ethinylestradiol; the pesticides methiocarb, metaflumizone, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin and acetamiprid; and the antibiotics amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, clarithromycin and erythromycin. We found that while contaminants commonly occur at low levels of few nanograms per L or are not detected in natural waters, there is an increasing number of reports displaying concentrations above 100 ng/L. Surface waters are commonly more contaminated than groundwater, suggesting that contaminants are removed in groundwater aquifers, e.g. by sorption or biodegradation. The estimated risk following water drinking by humans is higher for infants than for adults. Nonetheless, on the average, groundwater consumption does not pose a risk for human health at the reported groundwater concentrations. Risk assessment using fish, plants, algae, and invertebrates shows that only few species are impacted by contaminants, e.g. Americamysis bahia, Mysidopsis bahia, and Daphnia magna by pesticides; and the plant Lemna minor and the algae Microcystis aeruginosa by the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and erythromycin., This research has been supported through the Grant CEX2018-000794-S funded by MCIN/AEI/https://doi.org/10.13039/501100011033. Due to their persistence or continuous discharge, toxic substances are present in the aquatic environment, and can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in the food web, generating a significant ecological risk and a threat to human health. The present study assess the occurrence and tissue (muscle, liver, stomach and gills) distribution of 59 anthropogenic contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in marine fish from Brazil. A simpler and faster analytical methodology based on vortex-assisted matrix solid-phase dispersion (VA-MSPD) and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed and validated. Limits of quantification ranged from 3.31 to 114 ng g-1 dw with recovery rates between 60 and 140 % and relative standard deviation below 20 %. The ultraviolet filters 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4HB) (benzophenone-3 metabolite) and benzocaine (Et-PABA), and the antibacterial salicylic acid were frequently accumulated in muscle and liver at concentrations between 39.5 and 21.0 ngg-1 dw. The determined concentrations resulted to be lower than the tolerable daily intake recommended by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)., The authors thank M.P. Recovery and reuse of nutrients is a major challenge in agriculture. A new process contributing to a circular economy is the anaerobic digestion of food waste, which is a sustainable way of recycling nutrients as the digestate can be used as fertiliser in agriculture and horticulture. However, the digestate may be polluted with contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) that can be circulated back into the food chain, posing a risk to the environment and human health. In this work, the nutrient solution was spiked with 18 selected CECs frequently detected in food waste biogas facilities, and subsequent uptake and fate of these CECs were evaluated in pak choi grown in two different nutrient solutions (mineral and organic). All spiked compounds except two (propylparaben, fenbendazole) were taken up by pak choi plants, with perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and sertraline displaying the highest concentrations (270 and 190 μg/kg fresh weight, respectively). There were no statistically significant differences in uptake between mineral and organic nutrient solutions. Uptake of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) was negatively correlated with perfluorocarbon chain length and dependent on the functional group (r = -0.73). Sixteen transformation products (TPs) were tentatively identified using suspect screening, most of which were Phase II or even Phase III metabolites. To assess the impact of the route of administration and doses of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) on treatment adherence, hospital admissions, and suicidal behaviour in patients with severe schizophrenia (Clinical Global Impression–Severity–CGI-S ≥ 5), we implemented an observational 5-year follow-up study. A total of 37.5% of the patients on oral antipsychotics (Aps) and 11.5% of those on long-acting injectables (LAIs) abandoned the treatment (p < 0.001). There were no differences in treatment discontinuation between the LAI-AP standard and high-dose groups. A total of 28.1% of the patients on oral Aps had at least one hospitalisation, as well as 13.1% of patients on LAIs (p < 0.001). There were fewer hospitalisations of patients on LAIs in the high-dose group (p < 0.05). Suicide attempts were recorded for 18% of patients on oral Aps but only for 4.6% of patients on LAIs (p < 0.001). No differences were found between the dosage groups on LAIs. Tolerability was good for all Aps and somewhat better for LAIs than oral Aps in terms of side effects (p < 0.05). There were no differences between the standard and high-dose groups. More patients discontinued treatment due to side effects in the oral AP group (p < 0.01). LAI SGA treatment was more effective than oral AP in terms of adherence and treatment outcomes for managing people with severe schizophrenia. Moreover, significant improvements were found that favour high-dose LAI SGA treatment for some of these patients. This study highlights the need to consider LAI antipsychotics and high-dose strategies for patients with severe schizophrenia.

Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) is used to increase groundwater resources and enhance the water quality of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents. The resulting water quality needs to be assessed. In this study, we investigate attenuation pathways of nitrogen (N) compounds (predominantly NH4+) from a secondary treatment effluent in pilot SAT systems: both a conventional one (SAT-Control system) and one operating with a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) to provide extra dissolved organic carbon to the recharged water. The goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of the two systems regarding N compounds by means of chemical and isotopic tools. Water chemistry (NO3-, NH4+, Non-Purgeable Dissolved Organic Carbon (NPDOC), and O2) and isotopic composition of NO3- (ẟ15N-NO3- and ẟ18O-NO3-) and NH4+ (ẟ15N-NH4+) were monitored in the inflow and at three different sections and depths along the aquifer flow path. Chemical and isotopic results suggest that coupled nitrification-denitrification were the principal mechanisms responsible for the migration and distribution of inorganic N in the systems and that nitrification rate decreased with depth. At the end of the study period, 66% of the total N in the solution was removed in the SAT-PRB system and 69% in the SAT-Control system, measured at the outlet of the systems. The residual N in solution in the SAT-PRB system had an approximately equal proportion of N-NH4+ and N-NO3- while in the SAT-Control system, the residual N in solution was primarily N-NO3-. UV filters (UVFs) and paraben preservatives (PBs) are widely used components in many personal care products. However, there has been a rising concern for their endocrine-disrupting effects on wildlife once they reach aquatic ecosystems via recreative activities and wastewater treatment plants effluents. This study addresses UVFs and PBs occurrence in seawater and sediment impacted by tourism and sewage discharges along the coast of Mahdia, center East Tunisia. Samples of water and sediment were collected for 6 months from 3 coastal areas. Among the 14 investigated UVFs, 8 were detected in seawater and 4 were found in sediment. All PBs were present in seawater and only methylparaben (MePB) was detected in sediment. Benzophenone-3 (oxybenzone, BP3), benzocaine (EtPABA), and MePB were present in all water samples with concentrations in the ranges 16.4-66.9, 7.3-37.7, and 17.6-222 ng/L, respectively. However, the highest value, 1420 ng/L, corresponded to octinoxate (EHMC). In sediments, avobenzone (AVO), 4-methyl benzylidene camphor (4MBC), EHMC, 5-methyl-1-H-benzotriazole (MeBZT), and MePB were detected at concentrations within the range 1.1-17.6 ng/g dw, being MePB the most frequently detected (89%). MePB and MBZT presented the highest sediment-water partition coefficients and MePB also showed a positive correlation with total suspended solids' water content. Overall, pollutants concentrations remained rather constant along the sampling period, showing little seasonal variation. Background Radiotherapy impacts the local immune response to cancers. Prostate Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) is a highly focused method to deliver radiotherapy often used to treat prostate cancer. This is the first direct comparison of immune cells within prostate cancers before and after SBRT in patients. Methods Prostate cancers before and 2 weeks after SBRT are interrogated by multiplex immune fluorescence targeting various T cells and macrophages markers and analyzed by cell and pixel density, as part of a clinical trial of SBRT neoadjuvant to radical prostatectomy. Results Two weeks after SBRT, CD68, and CD163 macrophages are significantly increased while CD8 T cells are decreased. SBRT markedly alters the immune environment within prostate cancers.

Prenatal exposure to certain organic chemicals like pesticides and phenols has been lifelong associated with birth outcomes and health disorders. Many personal care product (PCP) ingredients have similar properties or structures to those chemicals. Previous studies have documented the occurrence of UV filters (UVFs) and paraben preservatives (PBs) in the placenta, but observational studies concerning PCPs chemicals and foetal exposure are particularly scarce. Thus, this work aimed to assess the presence of a wide range of PCPs chemicals using target and suspect screening in the umbilical cord blood of new born babies to evaluate their potential transfer to the fetus. To do so, we analysed 69 umbilical cord blood plasma samples from a mother-child cohort from Barcelona (Spain). We quantified 8 benzophenone-type UVFs and their metabolites, and 4 PBs using validated analytical methodologies based on target screening using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Then, we screened for additional 3246 substances using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and advanced suspect analysis strategies. Six UVFs and three parabens were detected in the plasma with frequencies between 1.4% and 17.4% and concentrations up to 53.3 ng/mL (benzophenone-2). Thirteen additional chemicals were tentatively identified in the suspect screening, and ten were further confirmed with the corresponding standards. Among them, we found the organic solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, the chelating agent 8-hydroxyquinoline, and the antioxidant 2,2'-methylenebis(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol), which have been demonstrated to display reproductive toxicity. UVFs and PBs presence in the umbilical cord blood demonstrates mother-fetus transfer through the placental barrier and prenatal exposure to these PCPs chemicals, which may lead to adverse effects in the early stages of fetal development. Considering the small cohort used in this study, the reported results should be interpreted as a preliminary reference for the background umbilical cord transfer levels of the target PCPs chemicals. Ultraviolet filters (UVFs) are emerging organic contaminants that are present in personal care (sunscreens and many cosmetics) and numerous industrial products. Among UVFs, the group of benzophenone derivatives are the most used worldwide. Benzophenone-3 (PB-3, oxybenzone) is one of the most common UVF. BP-3 is considered as an endocrine disruptor with estrogenic activity, it is photo-stable, lipophilic and bioaccumulates in different organisms. The widespread use of BP-3 has led to its release into aquatic ecosystems mainly via discharge of wastewater treatment plant effluents. Common sources of water for Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) are affected, to some extent, by effluents of wastewater treatment plants and therefore, MAR has been proposed as a potential source of these compounds to the environment. Understanding the fate of UVFs but also of their transformation products (TPs) in MAR is relevant because some of them can be more ecotoxic than the parent compound. We evaluated the fate of selected UVFs and its TPs at different compartments (water, soil and biofilm) in two field pilot scale MAR systems; one of them operated with a permeable reactive barrier based on compost and the other with sand (without reactive barrier). We compared the temporal and spatial evolution of these UVFs before and after a slug injection of lithium acetate, as organic carbon source, in the two MAR systems. Quantification of selected UVFs and TPs showed that the two MAR systems promoted the removal of UVFs. Extended removal was enhanced by the compost reactive barrier, in which lower concentrations of all selected UVFs and TPs were measured. The fact that they were detected and quantified more often sorbed onto the biofilm and organic fraction of sediment than in the aqueous phase suggested that degradation takes place in the two solid compartments. BackgroundHundreds of ongoing clinical trials combine radiation therapy, mostly delivered as stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), with immune checkpoint blockade. However, our understanding of the effect of radiotherapy on the intratumoral immune balance is inadequate, hindering the optimal design of trials that combine radiation therapy with immunotherapy. Our objective was to characterize the intratumoral immune balance of the malignant prostate after SBRT in patients.MethodsSixteen patients with high-risk, non-metastatic prostate cancer at comparable Gleason Grade disease underwent radical prostatectomy with (n = 9) or without (n = 7) neoadjuvant SBRT delivered in three fractions of 8 Gy over 5 days completed 2 weeks before surgery. Freshly resected prostate specimens were processed to obtain single-cell suspensions, and immune-phenotyped for major lymphoid and myeloid cell subsets by staining with two separate 14-antibody panels and multicolor flow cytometry analysis.ResultsMalignant prostates 2 weeks after SBRT had an immune infiltrate dominated by myeloid cells, whereas malignant prostates without preoperative treatment were more lymphoid-biased (myeloid CD45+ cells 48.4 ± 19.7% vs. 25.4 ± 7.0%; adjusted p-value = 0.11; and CD45+ lymphocytes 51.6 ± 19.7% vs. 74.5 ± 7.0%; p = 0.11; CD3+ T cells 35.2 ± 23.8% vs. 60.9 ± 9.7%; p = 0.12; mean ± SD).ConclusionSBRT drives a significant lymphoid to myeloid shift in the prostate-tumor immune infiltrate. This may be of interest when combining SBRT with immunotherapies, particularly in prostate cancer.

In this work, we explore the relationship between affect and the use of aesthetics by feminist digital activists to communicate their ideas and protest against sexual violence. Our focus, therefore, lies on the visual culture of digital protest. We consider visual artefacts a visual repertoire of protest (Jenzen et al., 2020, p. 420) that can both be articulated in a specific local context whilst simultaneously echoing global sentiments. In this paper, we analyse the visual repertoire of protest of Spanish feminist digital activism against sexual violence. To do so, we analysed 696 visual artefacts linked to the hashtag #HermanaYoSíTeCreo (#SisterIDoBelieveYou) shared on Twitter between May 1, 2018, and August 31, 2020. Our methodological framework incorporates a collaborative triangled analysis based on social semiotics (Ledin & Machin, 2018; Van Leeuwen, 2005), socio-hermeneutic analysis (Knoblauch & Schnettler, 2012; Serrano Pascual & Zurdo Alaguero, 2010), hashtag ethnography (Bonilla & Rose, 2015), and interpretative thick description (Geertz, 1973, pp. 3–30). Additionally, we also developed an ethnographic sensibility towards the corpus, which engaged us in a constant dialogue to overcome the positivist trend of data-driven visual digital analysis. Our work here addresses the understanding of how visual discourses can create the affective unification of social media users (Stage, 2013) as a key feature of feminist politics and online activism (Keller et al., 2018). We analysed the use of visual artefacts by the "virtual" community of sisterhood and concluded that these processes served as a basis for (a) establishing distinctive while versatile visual branding; (b) weaving an affective community; (c) articulating the desire to connect and to gather through love, hope, outrage and disgust; and (d) linking past and present as well as geographically distant feminist struggles.

Nowadays, water is a scarce resource, hence, water management is crucial as demand for agricultural, urban, and industrial purposes increases. The use of reclaimed water in agriculture can be a suitable solution. However, pathogens and chemical contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) present in reclaimed water can accumulate in the soil and ultimately, in the crop. To evaluate the potential transfer of biological and chemical pollutants from water to crop, two plots were designed for the cultivation of lettuce under field conditions. In this study, the influence of water quality, soil composition, and irrigation system on plant uptake of CECs and pathogens was assessed. The applied reclamation process reduced total suspended solids, E. coli (3-5 ulog), sulfite-reducing clostridia spores (1 ulog), Helminth eggs, and Legionella spp levels (complete removal) in water. Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and electric conductivity (EC) in the soils irrigated with reclaimed water were lower, and E. Coli was not detected. In lettuces, E. coli was only present in the crops irrigated with wastewater. Pharmaceuticals were the most frequently detected CECs in soils and waters, whereas UV filters achieved the highest concentrations. Diclofenac and salicylic acid were the most accumulated in soils, and diclofenac, ofloxacin, and benzophenone-4 were the most prevalent in the WWTP effluent. The irrigation water quality was the factor driving the transfer of CECs to the crops. Radiotherapy impacts the local immune response to cancers. Prostate Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) is a highly focused method to deliver radiotherapy often used to treat prostate cancer. This is the first direct comparison of immune cells within prostate cancers before and after SBRT in patients.Prostate cancers before and 2 weeks after SBRT are interrogated by multiplex immune fluorescence targeting various T cells and macrophages markers and analyzed by cell and pixel density, as part of a clinical trial of SBRT neoadjuvant to radical prostatectomy.Two weeks after SBRT, CD68, and CD163 macrophages are significantly increased while CD8 T cells are decreased. SBRT markedly alters the immune environment within prostate cancers.

Introduction Case management (CM) as a model of community intervention in people with severe mental illness and with pharmacological and psychosocial integrated care have been suggested as a way to improve treatment adherence and to prevent hospital admissions among people with severe schizophrenia compared with standard treatment.The objectives of this study were to know the treatment adherence and the psychiatric hospitalizations of patients with severe schizophrenia before (standard treatment in mental health units) and during treatment in an integrated, community based, intensive case managed program.The program for people with severe mental illness in Gijón (Spain) is based on the principles of community care with intensive case management and with a multidiscipli-nary team intervention. Nurses as case managers and integrated psychological and pharmacological treatment, social skills training, psychoeducation, vocational interven-tion and home support are provided.MethodsObservational study, mirror image, of ten years of follow-up and ten retrospectives (pretreatment), of patients with severe schizophrenia in a community based program, with integrated pharmacological and psychosocial treatment and intensive case management (N=344). Reasons for the Program discharge and psychiatric hospital admissions were recorded ten years before and during treatment.Results After 10 years only 12.2% of the patients were voluntary discharges (In previous standard treatment: 84.3%).
