Changes in sea ice conditions and atmospheric circulation over the Southern Ocean play an important role in modulating Antarctic climate. However, observations of both sea ice and wind conditions are limited in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, both temporally and spatially, prior to the satellite era (1970 onwards). Ice core chemistry data can be used to reconstruct changes over annual, decadal, and millennial timescales. To facilitate sea ice and wind reconstructions, the CLIVASH2k (CLimate Variability in Antarctica and the Southern Hemisphere over the past 2000 years) working group has compiled a database of two species, sodium [Na+] and sulfate [SO42-], commonly measured ionic species. The database (https://doi.org/10.5285/9E0ED16E-F2AB-4372-8DF3-FDE7E388C9A7; Thomas et al., 2022) comprises records from 105 Antarctic ice cores, containing records with a maximum age duration of 2000 years. An initial filter has been applied, based on evaluation against sea ice concentration, geopotential height (500 hPa), and surface wind fields to identify sites suitable for reconstructing past sea ice conditions, wind strength, or atmospheric circulation.

Organic contamination has been less investigated in Antarctic snow and ice than in other matrices due to analytical operational problems. In this study, the concentration of 14 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons was determined in a shallow firn core by Homogeneous Liquid-Liquid Extraction and High–Performance Liquid Chromatography with a Fluorescence Detector. This investigation aimed to develop a simple analytical methodology for future application directly in fieldwork, taking advantage of the simplicity and small sample volumes. The analyte recoveries were 71–99% considering a 100 ng L⁻¹ initial concentration of each compound, with a relative standard deviation of 1.1–9.9%. Analytical sensitivity/ detection limit/ quantification limits varied from 7.8/ 20.3/ 67.6 ng L⁻¹ for fluoranthene to 0.6/ 1.5/ 5.1 ng L⁻¹ for anthracene. These analytical parameters allow us to apply the method to real samples. We found visible differences at various firn core depths when considering the sum of total analytes under study. The highest total concentration was 741 ng L-1 and the lowest one 134.9 ng L-1. The methodology can be applied without mixing samples with adequate analytical parameters, and it can preserve the firn core temporal resolution, which is an advantage for application in fieldwork.

In this work, we present the climatic evolution of the South Pacific Ocean from 1900 to 2010 and its environmental influence over West Antarctica. We analyzed the sea surface temperature, mean sea level pressure, and meridional wind (at 850 hPa) of the South Pacific Ocean using ERA-20C reanalysis (European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) and compared these parameters with the regional temperature obtained indirectly (by proxy) from two ice cores from the West Antarctic ice sheet (Mount Johns and Ferrigno). The sea surface temperature increased in almost the entire South Pacific Ocean from 1900 to 2010; in the equatorial Pacific, it increased by 2.1 °C from 1916 to 1997, while in the middle latitudes of the South Pacific, it increased by 1.1 °C from 1923 to 2001. This increase occurred concurrently with a positive trend in the Southern Annular Mode and a change the mean sea level pressure anomaly from 1960 onwards. This atmospheric pressure increased at middle latitudes and decreased around Antarctica in the circumpolar low-pressure zone, strengthening the Amundsen Sea Low and changing the pattern of the meridional wind anomaly (at 850 hPa) between medium and high latitudes in the South Pacific. Furthermore, since 1960, a greater flow from north to south (onshore) has predominated from the southeast South Pacific to the north of West Antarctica. Such changes caused a reduction in the sea ice extent in the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas and an increase in average atmospheric temperature primarily in the coastal region of West Antarctica, as demonstrated by the Ferrigno ice core record. Conversely, the Mount Johns region did not show the same trend in atmospheric temperature, as it was influenced mainly by cold air masses from the Antarctic ice sheet

The article investigates changes in paraglacial systems and interconnections with glacial shrinkage on King George Island, Maritime Antarctica. The proglacial environment, as a result of recent deglaciation, was analyzed, and the types of landforms and at different scales were identified. These records are useful for successive evolutionary stages paraglacial system reconstruction. Glaciers and paraglacial systems showed rapid changes and new landscapes were detected on King George Island. Glaciers presented an important change between 2000 and 2018, where its classification has changed from marine-terminating to land-terminating glacier (no-marine). There are currently 21 glaciers land-terminating on King George Island (corresponding to 31% of the glaciers) and 11 are present in Admiralty Bay. 25% of these glaciers were marine in 2000. The new paraglacial environments (since 2000) has 1.7 km2 of the total area. Ecology, Wanda, Windy, Anna South and Baranowski Glaciers showed outwash plain, talus slopes and fluvial channels landforms in recent paraglacial system. Geomorphological mapping shows that paraglacial processes which differ between environments marginal to glacier ice are not standardized. El artículo investiga los cambios en los sistemas paraglaciares y las interconexiones con la retracción de los glaciares en la isla Rey Jorge, Antártica Marítima. Se analizó el ambiente proglacial, resultado de la deglaciación reciente, y se identificaron los tipos de formas de relieve en sus diferentes escalas. Estos registros son útiles para la reconstrucción de sucesivas etapas evolutivas en el sistema paraglacial. Los glaciares y los sistemas paraglaciares están evolucionando rápidamente y se están detectando nuevos paisajes en la isla Rey Jorge. Los glaciares mostraron un cambio importante entre 2000 y 2018, donde su clasificación cambió de glaciar de terminación marina a glaciar de terminación terrestre (no marino). Actualmente hay 21 glaciares de terminación terrestres en la isla Rey Jorge (que corresponden al 31% de los glaciares) y 11 están presentes en la Bahía del Almirantazgo. El 25% de estos glaciares eran marinos en 2000. Los nuevos entornos paraglaciares (desde 2000) cubren 1,7 km2 del área total. Los glaciares Ecology, Wanda, Windy, Anna Sul y Baranowski mostraron formas de llanuras de lavado, depósitos de tálus, barrancos y flujos superficiales fluviais en el sistema paraglacial reciente. El mapeo geomorfológico muestra que los procesos paraglaciares que difieren entre ambientes marginales al hielo glaciar no están estandarizados. O artigo investiga alterações nos sistemas paraglaciais e interconexões com a retração glacial em setores da ilha Rei George, Antártica Marítima. Foi analisado o ambiente proglacial, resultado da deglaciação recente, e identificados os tipos de formas de relevo em suas diferentes escalas. Estes registros são úteis para a reconstrução de estágios sucessivos evolutivos no sistema paraglacial. Os resultados demonstraram que o ambiente marginal às geleiras e sistemas paraglaciais estão evoluindo na ilha Rei George e há novas paisagens. Algumas geleiras apresentaram uma mudança importante entre 2000 e 2019, onde sua classificação mudou de geleira de terminação marinha para geleira de terminação terrestre (não-marinha). Atualmente há 21 geleiras com término em terra na ilha Rei George (correspondendo a 31% das geleiras) e 11 destas estão localizadas na Baía do Almirantado. 25% destas geleiras eram marinhas em 2000. Os novos ambientes paraglaciais (desde 2000) têm 1,7 km2 ao total de área. Os ambientes marginais às geleiras (como as geleiras Ecology, Wanda, Windy, Anna Sul e Baranowski) mostraram formas de gênese não glacial, como planície de lavagem, depositos de tálus, ravinas e canais fluviais no sistema paraglacial recente. O mapeamento geomorfológico evidencia que os processos paraglaciais se diferenciam entre os ambientes marginais ao gelo das geleiras, não são padronizados. Este artigo investiga a variabilidade de temperatura e precipitação na região do Monte Melimoyu (44º5’S-72º51’O), entre 1950 e 2017 e a possível influência do ENOS e do SAM pela proximidade com o oceano Pacífico. Foram utilizados dados de reanálise da universidade de Delaware, índice ONI 3.4 do ENOS (NOAA) e o índice SAM, de Marshall (2003). Dados de precipitação das estações meteorológicas de La Junta (43°58'S-72°25'W) e de Puerto Aysén Ad. (43°58'S-72°25'W) foram analisados e comparados com as séries de reanálise. Testes de correlação cruzada foram aplicados aos dados de precipitação e temperatura com os índices de variação do ENOS e do SAM, no software Matlab 2012R para avaliar a existência de defasagens nas anomalias de precipitação e temperatura influenciadas por estas duas oscilações. A séria histórica de precipitação mostrou uma média de 2239 mm e uma tendência contínua de diminuição em -6 mm por ano, já a temperatura média superficial do ar foi de 9,87°C no período de 1950 e 2017, e uma tendência contínua de aumento em 0,04ºC por ano. Os picos de anomalia positivas de precipitação do início do período e de temperatura do final do período de análise estão relacionadas a fase positiva do SAM. Contudo, os testes com os dados do ENOS e SAM não mostram correlação direta com a variação negativa de precipitação e do aumento de temperatura na região, onde o fator de localização e as características morfológicas podem ser os maiores influenciadores no clima local. This article investigates the variability of temperature and precipitation in the region of Mount Melimoyu (44º5'S-72º51'O), between 1950-2017 and the possible ENOS and SAM influence by proximity with Pacific South. Reanalysis data from Delaware University, ONI 3.4 index of ENOS (NOAA) and SAM index from Marshall (2003) were used. In addition, we used precipitation data from weather stations of La Junta (43°58'S-72°25'W) and Puerto Aysén Ad. (43°58'S-72°25'W) to compare with reanalysis series. Cross correlations tests were applied to precipitation and temperature data with the variation of ENSO and SAMs indices on Matlab 2012R software to evaluate the existence of lags in precipitation and temperature anomalies influenced by these two oscillations. The historic precipitation series show 2239 mm of mean and a continuous downward trend of approximately -6 mm/year, while the average in surface air temperature was 9.87 °C in the 1950 and 2017 period and a continuous trend of increase by 0.04ºC/year. Precipitation and temperature positive anomaly peaks on beginning and end of period are related with the SAM positive phase. However, tests with ENOS and SAM data do not show no direct correlation with negative variation of precipitation and temperature increase in the region, where the location factor and morphological characteristics may be the major influencers in the local climate. Se utilizaron los datos de reanálisis de la Universidad de Delaware, el índice ONI 3.4 del ENOS (NOAA) y el índice SAM de Marshall (2003). Datos de precipitación de las estaciones meteorológicas de La Junta (43°58'S-72°25'W) e de Puerto Aysén Ad. (43°58'S-72°25'W) fueron analizados y comparados con la series de reanálisis. Las pruebas de correlación cruzada se aplicaron a los datos de precipitación y temperatura con índices de variación ENSO y SAM en el software Matlab 2012R, para evaluar la existencia de retraso de las anomalías en la precipitación y de temperatura influenciadas por estas dos oscilaciones. La serie histórica de la precipitación mostró promedio de 2239 mm y una tendencia descendente continua de -6 mm por año. La temperatura media del aire en la superficie fue de 9.87°C entre 1950 y 2017 y una tendencia ascendente continua de 0.04ºC por año. Los picos de anomalías positivas de la precipitación al comienzo del período y de la temperatura al final del período de análisis están relacionados con la fase positiva de SAM. Sin embargo,Sin embargo, las pruebas con datos ENSO y SAM no muestran una correlación directa con la variación negativa en la precipitación y el aumento de la temperatura en la región, donde el factor de ubicación y las características morfológicas pueden ser los principales influyentes en el clima local.

O presente estudo analisa a correspondência entre as concentrações de carvão vegetal e as alterações na composição palinológica em um testemunho sedimentar da turfeira de Águas Claras (30º06’24,39” S; 50º49’04,90”O) na planície costeira do extremo sul do Brasil (Rio Grande do Sul) em um intervalo de cerca de 38.900 anos AP a 1.500 anos AP. A dominância de vegetação herbácea (principalmente Poaceae) no intervalo glacial tardio do Neopleistoceno persistiu até o Holoceno, durante o desenvolvimento de uma turfeira. A análise da distribuição e concentração de tamanho dos fragmentos de charcoal foi utilizada para distinguir incêndios florestais locais de incêndios regionais. Incêndios regionais no Neopleistoceno (mais antigos do que 21.545 anos cal AP) foram diferenciados de um incêndio local do Holoceno, dadas as grandes quantidades de pequenos fragmentos de charcoal com diâmetros semelhantes. Um pico de charcoal que corresponde a um sinal incêndio natural, composto por alta concentração de fragmentos com grandes diâmetros indicando incêndio local, foi identificado no nível de topo de fácies originadas em turfeira (1.590–1.515 anos cal AP). Esse pico de charcoal, correlacionado aos dados palinológicos, indicou uma mudança na vegetação relacionada a um intervalo climático de seca que ocorreu por volta de 1.500–1.600 anos AP. The present study analyzes the correspondence between charcoal concentrations and changes in the palynological composition in a core from Águas Claras peatland (30º06’24.39” S; 50º49’04.90” W) in the coastal plain of southernmost Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul State) from approximately 38,900 yrs BP until 1,500 yrs BP. The dominance of grassland vegetation (mainly Poaceae) in Late Pleistocene sediments persisted into the Holocene during the development of a peatland. Analysis of fragment size distribution and concentration were useful to discriminate local fires from regional wildfires. Late Pleistocene regional fires registered in shallow pond deposits (older than 21,545 cal yrs BP) were distinguished from a local Holocene fire by the presence of higher proportions of small particles in charcoal assemblages. A charcoal peak related to a natural fire signal, composed by high concentration of charcoal with larger diameters, was identified at the topmost level of the peat facies (1,590–1,515 cal yrs BP). Correlated with palynological data, this charcoal peak originated by local fires indicates a change in vegetation during a dry climate interval that occurred around 1,500–1,600 yrs BP.
