We report on simulations of counter-propagating laser-produced plasmas in an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) hohlraum surrogate, aiming to replicate observations reported by Le Pape et. al in recent work. The conditions of the colliding plasmas are relevant to ICF hohlraums used for indirect-drive ignition, and are obtained both with and without low-density He-gas fill. We compare experimental diagnostics to outputs from simulations using the 1D-2V Vlasov-Fokker-Planck kinetic code iFP and the xRAGE radiation-hydrodynamics code. These include the inferred radial lineouts of inferred ion number fraction and ion and electron temperatures, as well as the reported experimental Thomson-scattering (TS) spectra (compared via synthetic TS diagnostics). We observe that 1D kinetic simulations capture the plasma states reported in the experimental diagnostics quite well. Counter-intuitively, the kinetic simulations capture the gas-fill experiment (expected to be more `hydro-like') better than the vacuum experiment, while the reverse is observed for hydrodynamic simulations. This is attributed to the presence of non-trivial multi-dimensional hydrodynamic effects which are more dominant in the vacuum experiment. These effects are somewhat inhibited in the gas-fill experiment, permitting quasi-1D kinetic plasma transport to play more of a role in producing plasma interpenetration. Differences between the effects of Maxwellian vs. non-Maxwellian (`full f') synthetic TS diagnostics are investigated for the kinetic simulations. We find non-Maxwellian TS spectra differ non-trivially from Maxwellian spectra, which suggests caution may be warranted when applying Maxwellian TS models to infer plasma conditions via backward modeling when kinetic effects may be present.

We report on the first steady-state simulations of strong plasma shocks with fully kinetic ions and electrons, independently confirmed by two fully kinetic codes (an Eulerian continuum and a Lagrangian particle-in-cell). While kinetic electrons do not fundamentally change the shock structure as compared with fluid electrons, we find an appreciable rearrangement of the preheat layer, associated with nonlocal electron heat transport effects. The electron heat flux profile qualitatively agrees between kinetic and fluid electron models, suggesting a certain level of "stiffness", though substantial nonlocality is observed in the kinetic heat flux. We also find good agreement with nonlocal electron heat-flux closures proposed in the literature. Finally, in contrast to the classical hydrodynamic picture, we find a significant collapse in the "precursor" electric-field shock at the preheat layer edge, which correlates with the electron-temperature gradient relaxation.

We present a numerical algorithm that enables a phase-space adaptive Eulerian Vlasov-Fokker-Planck (VFP) simulation of an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) capsule implosion. The approach relies on extending a recent mass, momentum, and energy conserving phase-space moving-mesh adaptivity strategy to spherical geometry. In configuration space, we employ a mesh motion partial differential equation (MMPDE) strategy while, in velocity space, the mesh is expanded/contracted and shifted with the plasma's evolving temperature and drift velocity. The mesh motion is dealt with by transforming the underlying VFP equations into a computational (logical) coordinate, with the resulting inertial terms carefully discretized to ensure conservation. To deal with the spatial and temporally varying dynamics in a spherically imploding system, we have developed a novel nonlinear stabilization strategy for MMPDE in the configuration space. The strategy relies on a nonlinear optimization procedure that optimizes between mesh quality and the volumetric rate change of the mesh to ensure both accuracy and stability of the solution. Implosions of ICF capsules are driven by several boundary conditions: 1) an elastic moving wall boundary; 2) a time-dependent Maxwellian Dirichlet boundary; and 3) a pressure-driven Lagrangian boundary. Of these, the pressure-driven Lagrangian boundary driver is new to our knowledge. The implementation of our strategy is verified through a set of test problems, including the Guderley and Van-Dyke implosion problems --the first-ever reported using a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck model., Comment: 62 pages, 34 figures

We consider the solution of the fully kinetic (including electrons) Vlasov-Amp\`ere system in a one-dimensional physical space and two-dimensional velocity space (1D-2V) for an arbitrary number of species with a time-implicit Eulerian algorithm. The problem of velocity-space meshing for disparate thermal and bulk velocities is dealt with by an adaptive coordinate transformation of the Vlasov equation for each species, which is then discretized, including the resulting inertial terms. Mass, momentum, and energy are conserved, and Gauss's law is enforced to within the nonlinear convergence tolerance of the iterative solver through a set of nonlinear constraint functions while permitting significant flexibility in choosing discretizations in time, configuration, and velocity space. We mitigate the temporal stiffness introduced by, e.g., the plasma frequency through the use of high-order/low-order (HOLO) acceleration of the iterative implicit solver. We present several numerical results for canonical problems of varying degrees of complexity, including the multiscale ion-acoustic shock wave problem, which demonstrate the efficacy, accuracy, and efficiency of the scheme.

Strong collisional shocks in multi-ion plasmas are featured in many environments, with Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments being one prominent example. Recent work [Keenan ${\it et \ al.}$, PRE ${\bf 96}$, 053203 (2017)] answered in detail a number of outstanding questions concerning the kinetic structure of steady-state, planar plasma shocks, e.g., the shock width scaling by Mach number, $M$. However, it did not discuss shock-driven ion-species stratification (e.g., relative concentration modification, and temperature separation). These are important effects, since many recent ICF experiments have evaded explanation by standard, single-fluid, radiation-hydrodynamic (rad-hydro) numerical simulations, and shock-driven fuel stratification likely contributes to this discrepancy. Employing the state-of-the-art Vlasov-Fokker-Planck code, iFP, along with multi-ion hydro simulations and semi-analytics, we quantify the ion stratification by planar shocks with arbitrary Mach number and relative species concentration for two-ion plasmas in terms of ion mass and charge ratios. In particular, for strong shocks, we find that the structure of the ion temperature separation has a nearly universal character across ion mass and charge ratios. Additionally, we find that the shock fronts are enriched with the lighter ion species, and the enrichment scales as $M^4$ for $M \gg 1$., Comment: 12 pages, 19 figures; submitted to Physics of Plasmas

We consider a 1D-2V Vlasov-Fokker-Planck multi-species ionic description coupled to fluid electrons. We address temporal stiffness with implicit time stepping, suitably preconditioned. To address temperature disparity in time and space, we extend the conservative adaptive velocity-space discretization scheme proposed in [Taitano et al., J. Comp. Phys., 318, 391-420, (2016)] to a spatially inhomogeneous system. In this approach, we normalize the velocity-space coordinate to a temporally and spatially varying local characteristic speed per species. We explicitly consider the resulting inertial terms in the Vlasov equation, and derive a discrete formulation that conserves mass, momentum, and energy up to a prescribed nonlinear tolerance upon convergence. Our conservation strategy employs nonlinear constraints to enforce these properties discretely for both the Vlasov operator and the Fokker-Planck collision operator. Numerical examples of varying degrees of complexity, including shock-wave propagation, demonstrate the favorable efficiency and accuracy properties of the scheme., Comment: 38 pages, 18 figures, pre-print submitted to J. Strong collisional shocks in multi-ion plasmas are featured in many high-energy-density environments, including Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) implosions. However, their basic structure and its dependence on key parameters (e.g., the Mach number and the plasma ion composition) are poorly understood, and controversies in that regard remain in the literature. NIF experiments with Be capsules have followed a path of the highly successful "high-foot" CH capsules. Several keyhole and ConA targets preceeded a DT layered shot. In addition to backscatter subtraction, laser drive multipliers were needed to match observed X-ray drives. Those for the picket (0.95), trough (1.0) and second pulse (0.80) were determined by VISAR measurements. The time dependence of the Dante total x-ray flux and its fraction > 1.8 keV reflect the time dependence of the multipliers. A two step drive multiplier for the main pulse can match implosion times, but Dante measurements suggest the drive multiplier must increase late in time. With a single set of time dependent, multi-level multipliers the Dante data are well matched. These same third pulse drive multipliers also match the implosion times and Dante signals for two CH capsule DT. One discrepancy in the calculations is the X-ray flux in the picket. Calculations over-estimate the flux > 1.8 keV by a factor of ~100, while getting the total flux correctly. These harder X-rays cause an expansion of the Be/fuel interface of 2-3 km/s before the arrival of the first shock. VISAR measurements show only 0.2 to 0.3 km/s. The X-ray drive on the DT Be capsule was further degraded by a random decrease of 9% in the total picket flux. This small change caused the capsule fuel to change from an adiabat of 1.8 to 2.3 by mistiming of the first and second shocks. With this shock tuning and adjustments to the calculation, the first NIF Be capsule implosion achieved 29% of calculated yield, comparable to the CH DT capsules of 68% and 21%. Inclusion of a large M1 asymmetry in the DT ice layer and mixing from instability growth may help explain this final degradation. In summary when driven similarly the Be capsules performed like CH capsules. Performance degradation for both seems to be dominated by drive and capsule asymmetries.

A number of studies have considered how the rate of magnetic reconnection scales in large and weakly collisional systems by the modelling of long reconnecting current sheets. However, this set-up neglects both the formation of the current sheet and the coupling between the diffusion region and a larger system that supplies the magnetic flux. Recent studies of magnetic island merging, which naturally include these features, have found that ion kinetic physics is crucial to describe the reconnection rate and global evolution of such systems. In this paper, the effect of a guide field on reconnection during island merging is considered. In contrast to the earlier current sheet studies, we identify a limited range of guide fields for which the reconnection rate, outflow velocity, and pile-up magnetic field increase in magnitude as the guide field increases. The Hall-MHD fluid model is found to reproduce kinetic reconnection rates only for a sufficiently strong guide field, for which ion inertia breaks the frozen-in condition and the outflow becomes Alfvenic in the kinetic system. The merging of large islands occurs on a longer timescale in the zero guide field limit, which may in part be due to a mirror-like instability that occurs upstream of the reconnection region., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. The fast rates of magnetic reconnection found in both nature and experiments are important to understand theoretically. Recently, it was demonstrated that two-fluid magnetic reconnection remains fast in the strong guide field regime, regardless of the presence of fast-dispersive waves. This conclusion is in agreement with recent results from kinetic simulations, and is in contradiction to the findings in an earlier two-fluid study, where it was suggested that fast-dispersive waves are necessary for fast reconnection. In this paper, we give a more detailed derivation of the analytic model presented in a recent letter, and present additional simulation results to support the conclusions that the magnetic reconnection rate in this regime is independent of both collisional dissipation and system-size. In particular, we present a detailed comparison between fluid and kinetic simulations, finding good agreement in both the reconnection rate and overall length of the current layer. Analytical theory of fast magnetic reconnection with a large guide field is presented for the first time. We confirm that two distinct reconnection regimes are possible depending on whether the diffusion region thickness $\delta$ is larger or smaller than the sound gyroradius $\rho_s$. The reconnection is slow or Sweet-Parker-like for $\delta \gtrsim \rho_s$, and fast otherwise. In the fast regime, however, we find that ion viscosity $\mu$ plays a critical role. In particular, for $\delta < \rho_s$ the diffusion region thickness is proportional to $Ha^{-1}$ with $Ha \propto 1/\sqrt{\eta \mu}$ the Hartmann number, and the reconnection rate is proportional to $Pr^{-1/2}$ with $Pr = \mu/\eta$ the Prandtl number and $\eta$ the resistivity. If the perpendicular ion viscosity is employed for $\mu$ the reconnection rate becomes independent of both plasma $\beta$ and collision frequencies and therefore potentially fast.

Inertial effects in nonlinear magnetic reconnection are studied within the context of 2D electron magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD) with resistive and viscous dissipation. Families of nonlinear solutions for relevant current sheet parameters are predicted and confirmed numerically in all regimes of interest. Electron inertia becomes important for current sheet thicknesses $\delta$ below the inertial length $d_{e}$. In this case, in the absence of electron viscosity, the sheet thickness experiences a nonlinear collapse. Viscosity regularizes solutions at small scales. Transition from resistive to viscous regimes shows a nontrivial dependence on resistivity and viscosity, featuring a hysteresis bifurcation. In all accessible regimes, the nonlinear reconnection rate is found to be explicitly independent of the electron inertia and dissipation coefficients., Comment: submitted to publication

The complete short mean free path description of magnetized plasma in the drift ordering has recently been derived. The results correct the previous expressions for the ion pressure anisotropy (or parallel ion viscosity) and the perpendicular ion viscosity - the ion gyro-viscosity is unchanged. In addition, the electron problem is solved for the first time to obtain the electron pressure anisotropy (parallel electron viscosity) and the electron gyro-viscosity - the perpendicular electron viscosity is negligible. The results have been used to obtain a reduced fluid description appropriate to the edge of a tokamak.
