Abstract

The origin of the martian methane is still poorly understood. A plausible explanation is that methane could have been produced either by hydrothermal alteration of basaltic crust or by serpentinization of ultramafic rocks producing hydrogen and reducing crustal carbon into methane. Once formed, methane storage on Mars is commonly associated with the presence of hidden clathrate reservoirs. Here, we alternatively suggest that chabazite and clinoptilolite, which belong to the family of zeolites, may form a plausible storage reservoir of methane in the martian subsurface. Because of the existence of many volcanic terrains, zeolites are expected to be widespread on Mars and their Global Equivalent Layer may range up to more than $\sim$1 km, according to the most optimistic estimates. If the martian methane present in chabazite and clinoptilolite is directly sourced from an abiotic source in the subsurface, the destabilization of a localized layer of a few millimeters per year may be sufficient to explain the current observations. The sporadic release of methane from these zeolites requires that they also remained isolated from the atmosphere during its evolution. The methane release over the ages could be due to several mechanisms such as impacts, seismic activity or erosion. If the methane outgassing from excavated chabazite and/or clinoptilolite prevails on Mars, then the presence of these zeolites around Gale Crater could explain the variation of methane level observed by Mars Science Laboratory., Comment: Accepted for publication in Icarus

Abstract

The article discusses the use of stented aortic matrices for tracheal reconstruction in advanced thyroid cancer. The study reports on the outcomes of 12 patients who underwent this procedure and found it to be a safe and effective treatment option for previously unresectable malignancies. The patients had favorable long-term results with no tracheal recurrence and a good quality of life. However, the study acknowledges limitations such as a small sample size and a lack of comparison to non-surgical methods. The authors plan to conduct a larger, randomized trial in the future. Abstract

In fluids, the compressibility and related thermodynamic properties can be obtained from Kirkwood–Buff integrals (KBIs), i.e., infinite volume integrals over the radial distribution function (RDF). KBI theory has never been applied to crystals because the KBIs diverge when computed in the standard way as running integrals. Here, we show that KBI theory can be applied to solids without divergence, provided that the recently developed finite volume KBI method is used. In order to accelerate the integral convergence as a function of system size, we introduce a physically motivated convolution of the RDF. When using the convoluted RDF and an extrapolation of the finite-volume KBI, the zero-temperature KBI converges very fast to the exact value. We apply the theory to solid argon at finite temperatures. The RDF is computed with a Lennard-Jones potential using Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, and the isothermal compressibility κT is obtained from the KBI. The variation of κT with temperature agrees very well with experiment. The absolute value of κT is, however, underestimated by 40%–50%, which is attributed to finite size effects of the RDF obtained from molecular simulation. The error can be corrected by a single scaling factor that can be easily calculated at zero temperature. By extending Kirkwood–Buff solution theory to solids, this work lays a new framework for the thermodynamic modeling of complex structures, alloys, and solid solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The adsorption of carbon monoxide and nitrogen molecules at the surface of four forms of solid water is investigated by means of grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The trapping ability of crystalline Ih and low-density amorphous ices, along with clathrate hydrates of structures I and II, is compared at temperatures relevant for astrophysics. It is shown that when considering a gas phase that contains mixtures of carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the trapping of carbon monoxide is favored with respect to nitrogen at the surface of all solids, irrespective of the temperature. The results of the calculations also indicate that some amounts of molecules can be incorporated in the bulk of the water structures, and the molecular selectivity of the incorporation process is investigated. Again, it is shown that incorporation of carbon monoxide is favored with respect to nitrogen in most of the situations considered here. In addition, the conclusions of the present simulations emphasize the importance of the strength of the interactions between the guest molecules and the water network. They indicate that the accuracy of the corresponding interaction potentials is a key point, especially for simulating clathrate selectivity. Abstract

In a large retrospective study, we assessed the putative use of circulating microvesicles (MVs), as innovative biomarkers of radiation toxicity in a cohort of 208 patients with prostate adenocarcinoma overexposed to radiation. The level of platelet (P)-, monocyte (M)- and endothelial (E)-derived MVs were assessed by flow cytometry. Rectal bleeding toxicity scores were collected at the time of blood sampling and during the routine follow-up and were tested for association with MVs using a multivariate logistic regression. MVs dosimetric correlation was investigated using dose volume histograms information available for a subset of 36 patients. The number of PMVs was significantly increased in patients with highest toxicity grades compared to lower grades. Risk prediction analysis revealed that increased numbers of PMVs, and an increased amount of MMVs relative to EMVs, were associated with worst rectal bleeding grade compared to the time of blood sampling. Moreover, a significant correlation was found between PMV and MMV numbers, with the range of doses up to the median exposure (40 Gy) of bladder/rectum and anterior rectal wall, respectively. MVs could be considered as new biomarkers to improve the identification of patients with high toxicity grade and may be instrumental for the prognosis of radiation therapy complications.

Objectives: Head & Neck Paragangliomas have been historically relying on surgery mostly, with worsened quality of life and major sequelae. Conventional external radiation therapy seems to offer an equivalent control rate with a low toxicity profile. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and efficiency of intensity‐modulated radiation therapy in Head & Neck paragangliomas. Methods: This is a retrospective monocentric study conducted in a referral center, including all patients treated with IMRT, whether as an exclusive or post‐operative treatment for a tympanic and jugular, carotid, or vagal paraganglioma. Data collection was performed through the manuscript and computerized medical files, including consultation, operative, imaging, pathological analyses, delineation, and treatment planning reports. Success was defined as the complete or partial regression or stabilization without progression, or relapse in accordance with the RECIST criteria. Acute toxicities and long‐term sequelae were assessed. Results: Our cohort included 39 patients included between 2011 and 2021: 18 patients treated for a TJ PG (45.9%), 11 patients for a carotid PG (28.4%), and 9 for a vagal PG (23.1%). Twenty‐nine patients had IMRT as an exclusive treatment (74.4%), whereas 10 patients had a post‐operative complementary treatment (25.6%). Median follow‐up in our cohort was 2318 days (average = 2200 days, 237–5690, sd = 1281.9). Among 39 patients, 37 were successfully controlled with IMRT (94.8%), and the toxicity profile was low without any major toxicity. Abstract

The adsorption of H2 in zeolites by molecular simulations use, in many applications, single sphere model. Although this representation provides coherent results with ex- periments above 77K, below this temperature the usual hydrogen representation fails to reproduce experimental results. The disagreement can be associated to the interplay of the atomistic heterogeneity and the electric field produced by the zeolite faujasite. These aspects are generally excluded in classical force fields. For elucidating the influ- ence of these issues, we performed DFT simulations for the faujasite Na86X at 40K with and without guest hydrogen molecules for determining the electrical field generated by the zeolitic structure. Our results show that the electrical field of the host structure induces a dipole moment on the hydrogens of ≈0.32 D. This value was included in clas- sical Monte-Carlo simulations by using a dumbbell representation of H2. Despite the small dipole moment, the simulations revealed an enhancement of adsorbed molecules. The formation of a dipolar moment in the H2 suggests that at cryogenic temperatures the agreement with experiments passes through the use of polarizable models of H2.

International audience; Purpose or ObjectiveChronic radiocystitis (CRC) is a consecutive pathology of pelvic irradiation characterized by chronic inflammation occasionally progressing to fibrosis with symptoms such as pain and bleeding. Previous studies on radiation rectitis have shown that Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) can reverse chronic inflammation and fibrosis after irradiation. In a preclinical model of CRC, we further investigated whether MSC infusion may limit inflammation and fibrosis. Materials and MethodsOur study is divided into two parts, the design of a rat model of CRC then the influence of MSC infusion on CRC. CRC was induced by localized irradiation of the whole bladder with two beams, guided by tomography using the Small Radiation Research Platform (SARRP). A dose range of 20 to 80 Gy with a follow-up of 3 to 12 months post-irradiation was performed. Then we retained to use an irradiation of 40 Gy, followed 4 months later by an intravenous injection of 5 million of MSCs, administered every two weeks (3 injections in total). Physiological, histological and molecular monitoring was performed over 12 months after irradiation (figure 1).Figure 1: Experimental designResultsResults showed the onset of CRC as early as 6 months after irradiation, with chronic inflammation, hematuria, urothelium disorganization and fibrosis increasing with time (figure 2).We observed that the intensity and frequency of hematuria were proportional to the radiation dose with a threshold at 40 Gy and the onset of bleeding from 60 days post-irradiation.Inflammation with overexpression of CCL5 (5-fold; p-value
