We revisit the classic Joule-expansion experiments, now with a quantum-degenerate atomic Bose gas. In contrast to the classical-gas experiments, where no temperature change was measured, here we observe both cooling and heating effects, which arise, respectively, due to quantum statistics and inter-particle interactions. The wolensing Python package offers a solution for gravitational wave lensing computations within the full wave-optics regime. This tool is primarily designed to calculate the gravitational lensing amplification factor including diffractive effects, an essential component for generating accurate lensed gravitational wave waveforms. These waveforms are integral to astrophysical and cosmological studies related to gravitational-wave lensing. Integrating with lensingGW (Pagano, Hannuksela, and Li 2020), wolensing provides solutions for image positions in the high-frequency regime where wave and geometrical optics converge. This functionality allows the amplification factor to be applicable across a wider frequency range. Another key feature of wolensing is its ability to plot time delay contours on the lens plane, offering researchers a visual tool to better understand the relationship between the lens system and the amplification factor. wolensing is compatible with various lens models in lenstronomy (Birrer et al. 2021). There are also built-in lens models including point mass, singular isothermal sphere (SIS),and nonsingular isothermal ellipsoid (NIE) with jax (Bradbury et al. 2018) supporting GPU computation. Users can accommodate different lens models in the code with jax. wolensing is available as an open-source package on PyPI and can be installed via pip.

Discoveries of fundamental limits for the rates of physical processes, from the speed of light to the Lieb-Robinson bound for information propagation, are conceptual breakthroughs that often challenge our understanding of the underlying physics. Here we observe such a limit for a paradigmatic many-body phenomenon, the spreading of coherence during formation of a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate. We study condensate formation in an isolated homogeneous atomic gas that is initially far from equilibrium, in an incoherent low-energy state, and condenses as it relaxes towards equilibrium. Tuning the inter-atomic interactions that drive condensation, we show that the spreading of coherence through the system is initially slower for weaker interactions, and faster for stronger ones, but always eventually reaches the same limit, where the square of the coherence length grows at a universal rate given by the ratio of Planck's constant and the particle mass. These observations are robust to changes in the initial state, the gas density, and the system size. Our results provide benchmarks for theories of universality far from equilibrium, are relevant for quantum technologies that rely on large-scale coherence, and invite similar measurements in other quantum systems., Comment: Main text: 5 pages, 4 figures. Population-based structural health monitoring (PBSHM), aims to share information between members of a population. An offshore wind (OW) farm could be considered as a population of nominally-identical wind-turbine structures. However, benign variations exist among members, such as geometry, sea-bed conditions and temperature differences. These factors could influence structural properties and therefore the dynamic response, making it more difficult to detect structural problems via traditional SHM techniques. This paper explores the use of a Bayesian hierarchical model as a means of multitask learning, to infer foundation stiffness distribution parameters at both population and local levels. To do this, observations of natural frequency from populations of structures were first generated from both numerical and experimental models. These observations were then used in a partially-pooled Bayesian hierarchical model in tandem with surrogate FE models of the structures to infer foundation stiffness parameters. Finally, it is demonstrated how the learned parameters may be used as a basis to perform more robust anomaly detection (as compared to a no-pooling approach) e.g. as a result of scour., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, early work features in ISWHM 2023 conference proceedings and available here: arXiv:2402.19295. Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic not $2$, whose Lie algebra is denoted $\mathfrak{g}$. We call a subvariety $\mathfrak{X}$ of the nilpotent cone $N \subset \mathfrak{g}$ monogamous if for every $e\in \mathfrak{X}$, the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triples $(e,h,f)$ with $f\in \mathfrak{X}$ are conjugate under the centraliser $C_G(e)$. Building on work by the first two authors, we show there is a unique maximal closed $G$-stable monogamous subvariety $V \subset N$ and that it is an orbit closure, hence irreducible. We show that $V$ can also be characterised in terms of Serre's $G$-complete reducibility., Comment: 16 pages

The analytical study of confinement in lattice gauge theories (LGTs) remains a difficult task to this day. Taking a geometric perspective on confinement, we develop a real-space renormalization group (RG) formalism for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGTs using percolation probability as a confinement order parameter. The RG flow we analyze is constituted by both the percolation probability and the coupling parameters. We consider a classical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT in two dimensions, with matter and thermal fluctuations, and analytically derive the confinement phase diagram. We find good agreement with numerical and exact benchmark results and confirm that a finite matter density enforces confinement at $T<\infty$ in the model we consider. Our RG scheme enables future analytical studies of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGTs with matter and quantum fluctuations and beyond., Comment: 7+6 pages, 8+1 figures

The learning process of a reinforcement learning (RL) agent remains poorly understood beyond the mathematical formulation of its learning algorithm. To address this gap, we introduce attention-oriented metrics (ATOMs) to investigate the development of an RL agent's attention during training. We tested ATOMs on three variations of a Pong game, each designed to teach the agent distinct behaviours, complemented by a behavioural assessment. Our findings reveal that ATOMs successfully delineate the attention patterns of an agent trained on each game variation, and that these differences in attention patterns translate into differences in the agent's behaviour. Through continuous monitoring of ATOMs during training, we observed that the agent's attention developed in phases, and that these phases were consistent across games. Finally, we noted that the agent's attention to its paddle emerged relatively late in the training and coincided with a marked increase in its performance score. Overall, we believe that ATOMs could significantly enhance our understanding of RL agents' learning processes, which is essential for improving their reliability and efficiency.

Experimental and numerical spectroscopy have revealed rich physics in antiferromagnets, in particular in frustrated and doped systems. The Majumdar-Ghosh (MG) model has an analytically known spin-disordered ground state of dimerized singlets as a result of magnetic frustration. Here we study the single-hole angle-resolved photoemission spectrum (ARPES) of a doped MG model, where we introduce a spin-hole interaction that is experimentally accessible with ultracold molecules. We report a bound spinon-holon ground state and clear signatures of a spinon-holon molecule state and polarons in the ARPES spectrum at different magnetizations. Moreover, we find signatures of an emergent Feshbach resonance with tunable interactions associated with the unbinding of the spinon and the holon. Our results provide new insights into the physics of dopants in frustrated $t$-$J$ models and establish the latter as a new platform for studies of emergent few-body phenomena., Comment: 6+3 pages, 4+2 figures

We propose and analyze a family of approximately-symmetric neural networks for quantum spin liquid problems. These tailored architectures are parameter-efficient, scalable, and significantly out-perform existing symmetry-unaware neural network architectures. Utilizing the mixed-field toric code model, we demonstrate that our approach is competitive with the state-of-the-art tensor network and quantum Monte Carlo methods. Moreover, at the largest system sizes (N=480), our method allows us to explore Hamiltonians with sign problems beyond the reach of both quantum Monte Carlo and finite-size matrix-product states. The network comprises an exactly symmetric block following a non-symmetric block, which we argue learns a transformation of the ground state analogous to quasiadiabatic continuation. Since the advent of Deepfakes in digital media, the development of robust and reliable detection mechanism is urgently called for. In this study, we explore a novel approach to Deepfake detection by utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) measured from the neural processing of a human participant who viewed and categorized Deepfake stimuli from the FaceForensics++ datset. These measurements serve as input features to a binary support vector classifier, trained to discriminate between real and manipulated facial images. We examine whether EEG data can inform Deepfake detection and also if it can provide a generalized representation capable of identifying Deepfakes beyond the training domain. Our preliminary results indicate that human neural processing signals can be successfully integrated into Deepfake detection frameworks and hint at the potential for a generalized neural representation of artifacts in computer generated faces. Moreover, our study provides next steps towards the understanding of how digital realism is embedded in the human cognitive system, possibly enabling the development of more realistic digital avatars in the future.

L\'evy's Upward Theorem says that the conditional expectation of an integrable random variable converges with probability one to its true value with increasing information. In this paper, we use methods from effective probability theory to characterise the probability one set along which convergence to the truth occurs, and the rate at which the convergence occurs. We work within the setting of computable probability measures defined on computable Polish spaces and introduce a new general theory of effective disintegrations. We use this machinery to prove our main results, which (1) identify the points along which certain classes of effective random variables converge to the truth in terms of certain classes of algorithmically random points, and which further (2) identify when computable rates of convergence exist. Our convergence results significantly generalize earlier results within a unifying novel abstract framework, and there are no precursors of our results on computable rates of convergence. Close binary systems present challenges to planet formation. As binary separations decrease, so too do the occurrence rates of protoplanetary disks in young systems and planets in mature systems. For systems that do retain disks, their disk masses and sizes are altered by the presence of the binary companion. Through the study of protoplanetary disks in binary systems with known orbital parameters, we seek to determine the properties that promote disk retention and, therefore, planet formation. In this work, we characterize the young binary-disk system, FO Tau. We determine the first full orbital solution for the system, finding masses of $0.35^{+0.06}_{-0.05}\ M_\odot$ and $0.34\pm0.05\ M_\odot$ for the stellar components, a semi-major axis of $22(^{+2}_{-1})$ AU, and an eccentricity of $0.21(^{+0.04}_{-0.03})$. With long-baseline ALMA interferometry, we detect 1.3mm continuum and $^{12}{\mathrm{CO}} \ (J=2-1)$ line emission toward each of the binary components; no circumbinary emission is detected. The protoplanetary disks are compact, consistent with being truncated by the binary orbit. The dust disks are unresolved in the image plane and the more extended gas disks are only marginally resolved. Fitting the continuum and CO visibilities, we determine the inclination of each disk, finding evidence for alignment of the disk and binary orbital planes. This study is the first of its kind linking the properties of circumstellar protoplanetary disks to a precisely known binary orbit. The Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN provides antiproton bunches with a kinetic energy of 5.3 MeV. The Extra-Low ENergy Antiproton ring at CERN, commissioned at the AD in 2018, now supplies a bunch of electron-cooled antiprotons at a fixed energy of 100 keV. The MUSASHI antiproton trap was upgraded by replacing the radio-frequency quadrupole decelerator with a pulsed drift tube to re-accelerate antiprotons and optimize the injection energy into the degrader foils. By increasing the beam energy to 119 keV, a cooled antiproton accumulation efficiency of (26 +- 6)% was achieved., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

We are concerned with the existence and compactness of entropy solutions of the compressible Euler system for two-dimensional steady potential flow around an obstacle for a polytropic gas with supersonic far-field velocity. The existence problem, initially posed by Morawetz \cite{morawetz85} in 1985, has remained open since then. In this paper, we establish the first complete existence theorem for the Morawetz problem by developing a new entropy analysis, coupled with a vanishing viscosity method and compensated compactness ideas. The main challenge arises when the flow approaches cavitation, leading to a loss of strict hyperbolicity of the system and a singularity of the entropy equation, particularly for the case of adiabatic exponent $\gamma=3$. Our analysis provides a complete description of the entropy and entropy-flux pairs via the Loewner--Morawetz relations, which, in turn, leads to the establishment of a compensated compactness framework. As direct applications of our entropy analysis and the compensated compactness framework, we obtain the compactness of entropy solutions and the weak continuity of the compressible Euler system in the supersonic regime., Comment: 59 pages, 2 figures

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) were introduced in 1974 by Wilson to study quark confinement. These models have been shown to exhibit (de-)confined phases, yet it remains challenging to define experimentally accessible order parameters. Here we propose percolation-inspired order parameters (POPs) to probe confinement of dynamical matter in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGTs using electric field basis snapshots accessible to quantum simulators. We apply the POPs to study a classical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT and find a confining phase up to temperature $T=\infty$ in 2D (critical $T_c$, i.e. finite-$T$ phase transition, in 3D) for any non-zero density of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ charges. Further, using quantum Monte Carlo we demonstrate that the POPs reproduce the square lattice Fradkin-Shenker phase diagram at $T=0$ and explore the phase diagram at $T>0$. The correlation length exponent coincides with the one of the 3D Ising universality class and we determine the POP critical exponent characterizing percolation. Our proposed POPs provide a geometric perspective of confinement and are directly accessible to snapshots obtained in quantum simulators, making them suitable as a probe for quantum spin liquids., Comment: 5+9 pages, 4+6 figures

A distinguished family of completely prime primitive ideals in the universal enveloping algebra of a reductive Lie algebra ${\mathfrak g}$ over ${\mathbb C}$ are those ideals constructed from one-dimensional representations of finite $W$-algebras. We refer to these ideals as Losev--Premet ideals. For ${\mathfrak g}$ simple of classical type, we prove that for a Losev-Premet ideal $I$ in $U({\mathfrak g})$, there exists a Losev-Premet ideal $I_0$ for a certain Levi subalgebra ${\mathfrak g}_0$ of ${\mathfrak g}$ such that associated variety of $I_0$ is the closure of a rigid nilpotent orbit in ${\mathfrak g}_0$ and $I$ is obtained from $I_0$ by parabolic induction. We investigate the accelerator stage of a Plasma-Modulated Plasma Accelerator (P-MoPA) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 184801 (2021)] using both the paraxial wave equation and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. We show that adjusting the laser and plasma parameters of the modulator stage of a P-MoPA allows the temporal profile of pulses within the pulse train to be controlled, which in turn allows the wake amplitude in the accelerator stage to be as much as 72% larger than that generated by a plasma beat-wave accelerator with the same total drive laser energy. Our analysis shows that Rosenbluth-Liu detuning is unimportant in a P-MoPA if the number of pulses in the train is less than $\sim$ 30, and that this detuning is also partially counteracted by increased red-shifting, and hence increased pulse spacing, towards the back of the train. An analysis of transverse mode oscillations of the driving pulse train is found to be in good agreement with 2D PIC simulations. PIC simulations demonstrating energy gains of $\sim$ 1.5 GeV ($\sim$ 2.5 GeV) for drive pulse energies of 2.4 J (5.0 J) are presented. Our results suggest that P-MoPAs driven by few-joule, picosecond pulses, such as those provided by high-repetition-rate thin-disk lasers, could accelerate electron bunches to multi-GeV energies at pulse repetition rates in the kilohertz range., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

As evidenced by recent survey results, majority of asteroids are slow rotators (P>12 h), but lack spin and shape models due to selection bias. This bias is skewing our overall understanding of the spins, shapes, and sizes of asteroids, as well as of their other properties. Also, diameter determinations for large (>60km) and medium-sized asteroids (between 30 and 60 km) often vary by over 30% for multiple reasons. Our long-term project is focused on a few tens of slow rotators with periods of up to 60 hours. We aim to obtain their full light curves and reconstruct their spins and shapes. We also precisely scale the models, typically with an accuracy of a few percent. We used wide sets of dense light curves for spin and shape reconstructions via light-curve inversion. Precisely scaling them with thermal data was not possible here because of poor infrared data: large bodies are too bright for WISE mission. Therefore, we recently launched a campaign among stellar occultation observers, to scale these models and to verify the shape solutions, often allowing us to break the mirror pole ambiguity. The presented scheme resulted in shape models for 16 slow rotators, most of them for the first time. Fitting them to stellar occultations resolved previous inconsistencies in size determinations. For around half of the targets, this fitting also allowed us to identify a clearly preferred pole solution, thus removing the ambiguity inherent to light-curve inversion. We also address the influence of the uncertainty of the shape models on the derived diameters. Overall, our project has already provided reliable models for around 50 slow rotators. Such well-determined and scaled asteroid shapes will, e.g. constitute a solid basis for density determinations when coupled with mass information. We demonstrate resonant excitation of a plasma wave by a train of short laser pulses guided in a pre-formed plasma channel, for parameters relevant to a plasma-modulated plasma accelerator (P-MoPA). We show experimentally that a train of $N \approx 10$ short pulses, of total energy $\sim 1$ J, can be guided through $110$ mm long plasma channels with on-axis densities in the range $10^{17} - 10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$. The spectrum of the transmitted train is found to be strongly red-shifted when the plasma period is tuned to the intra-train pulse spacing. Numerical simulations are found to be in excellent agreement with the measurements and indicate that the resonantly excited plasma waves have an amplitude in the range $3$ - $10$ GV m$^{-1}$, corresponding to an accelerator stage energy gain of order $1$ GeV., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures (including Supplemental Material)

Sensitive magnetometers have been applied in a wide range of research fields, including geophysical exploration, bio-magnetic field detection, ultralow-field nuclear magnetic resonance, etc. Commonly, magnetometers are directly placed at the position where the magnetic field is to be measured. However, in some situations, for example in near space or harsh environments, near nuclear reactors or particle accelerators, it is hard to place a magnetometer directly there. If the magnetic field can be detected remotely, i.e., via stand-off detection, this problem can be solved. As optical magnetometers are based on optical readout, they are naturally promising for stand-off detection. We review various approaches to optical stand-off magnetometry proposed and developed over the years, culminating in recent results on measuring magnetic fields in the mesosphere using laser guide stars, magnetometry with mirrorless-lasing readout, and proposals for satellite-assisted interrogation of atmospheric sodium.

The primary tool for analysing groups acting on trees is Bass--Serre Theory. It is comprised of two parts: a decomposition result, in which an action is decomposed via a graph of groups, and a construction result, in which graphs of groups are used to build examples of groups acting on trees. The usefulness of the latter for constructing new examples of `large' (e.g. nondiscrete) groups acting on trees is severely limited. There is a pressing need for new examples of such groups as they play an important role in the theory of locally compact groups. An alternative `local-to-global' approach to the study of groups acting on trees has recently emerged, inspired by a paper of Marc Burger and Shahar Mozes, based on groups that are `universal' with respect to some specified `local' action. In recent work, the authors of this survey article have developed a general theory of universal groups of local actions, that behaves, in many respects, like Bass--Serre Theory. We call this the theory of local action diagrams. The theory is powerful enough to completely describe all closed groups of automorphisms of trees that enjoy Tits' Independence Property (P). This article is an introductory survey of the local-to-global behaviour of groups acting on trees and the theory of local action diagrams. The non-identifiability of the competing risks model requires researchers to work with restrictions on the model to obtain informative results. We present a new identifiability solution based on an exclusion restriction. Many areas of applied research use methods that rely on exclusion restrcitions. It appears natural to also use them for the identifiability of competing risks models. By imposing the exclusion restriction couple with an Archimedean copula, we are able to avoid any parametric restriction on the marginal distributions. We introduce a semiparametric estimation approach for the nonparametric marginals and the parametric copula. Our simulation results demonstrate the usefulness of the suggested model, as the degree of risk dependence can be estimated without parametric restrictions on the marginal distributions.
