There are several pathogens involved in the etiology of neonatal infections. Based on etiology, these can be classified into materno-fetal and nosocomial infections. Bacteria of the Chlamydia family behave like intracellular parasites. The most well-known member is Chlamydia trachomatis, which is the cause of the most common sexually transmitted disease in developed societies. In this case, we present a 27-days-old girl who presented at our clinic with conjunctivitis, dyspnea and coughing. Laboratory and imaging findings reported leucocytosis, eosinophilia, and bronchopneumonia. Her condition improved rapidly during antibiotic treatment, but her conjunctivitis recurred. Serological tests confirmed Chlamydia infection of the newborn. She became asymptomatic after the whole family has been cured. In case of neonatal conjunctivitis, pneumonia and eosinophilia, Chlamydia should be considered and the whole family treated to prevent re-infections.

I perioden fra januar 2016 til december 2017 har virksomheden Hybridfilter A/S i samarbejde med Institut for Byggeri og Anlæg ved Aalborg Universitet gennemført projektet ”Hybridfilter for fjernelse af lugt- og drivhusgasser fra septiktanke og iltfri spildevandsnet”. Projektet var støttet af MUDP og havde til formål at udvikle filterløsninger, der med ét filter kan reducere frigivelse af både lugt- og klimagasser fra spildevandssystemer.

Background and aims The recent trends in exogenous surfactant administration in newborns with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) are non-invasive, to avoid intubation and mechanical ventilation (MV). The aim of the study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a technique of minimally-invasive surfactant therapy (MIST) in preterm neonates compared with other techniques. Methods Inborn preterms with gestational age (GA) less than 32 weeks requiring surfactant, received Curosurf (200 mg/kg) in three ways: 1) via a gastric tube/angiocatheter placed in the trachea by direct laryngoscopy without premedication, followed by nasal CPAP (MIST group), 2) via tracheal intubation, extubation followed by nasal CPAP (INSURE group), 3) via an endotracheal tube followed by mechanical ventilation (CONTROL group). Results We studied 58 neonates with mean GA 26.8weeks±2.2 SD, mean birth weight 965.5g±309.8. 17 prematures (29.3%) were treated with MIST, 9 prematures (15.5%) received INSURE therapy, and 31 (53.4%) required intubation and MV. The method of surfactant administration was significantly associated with ventilation requirement (χ 2 = 38.21, p KW =28.57, p mean : 1.24 day±3.03 SD). The presence of hypotension after surfactant administration was significantly associated in CONTROL group (χ 2 = 14.79, p=0.0006, 95% CI). Also, intracranial haemorrhage, chronic lung disease and retinopathy of prematurity was significantly associated in CONTROL group (χ 2 = 11.54, p=0.003, r=−0.407, 95% CI), with no significant differences between MIST and INSURE groups. All deaths (10.34%) were recorded in CONTROL group. Conclusions MIST is a safe and potentially effective alternative to other techniques of surfactant administration, but further study is needed on a larger number of patients.

Developmental programming links growth in early life with health status in adulthood. Although environmental factors such as maternal diet can influence the growth and adult health status of offspring, the genetic influences on this process are poorly understood. Using the mouse as a model, we identify the imprinted gene Grb10 as a mediator of nutrient supply and demand in the postnatal period. The combined actions of Grb10 expressed in the mother, controlling supply, and Grb10 expressed in the offspring, controlling demand, jointly regulate offspring growth. Furthermore, Grb10 determines the proportions of lean and fat tissue during development, thereby influencing energy homeostasis in the adult. Most strikingly, we show that the development of normal lean/fat proportions depends on the combined effects of Grb10 expressed in the mother, which has the greater effect on offspring adiposity, and Grb10 expressed in the offspring, which influences lean mass. These distinct functions of Grb10 in mother and pup act complementarily, which is consistent with a coadaptation model of imprinting evolution, a model predicted but for which there is limited experimental evidence. In addition, our findings identify Grb10 as a key genetic component of developmental programming, and highlight the need for a better understanding of mother-offspring interactions at the genetic level in predicting adult disease risk.

This is due partly to the discovery of the new continent and the many scientific breakthroughs which dissolved archaic and religious explanations for natural phenomena. These developments led man to believe his potential was untapped and enormous. In the frenzy to obtain the maximum of one's capabilities moving outward into the world, Renaissance man, adversely, finds himself isolated from it. The two writers of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries which I compare are Baldesar Castiglione and Sir Philip Sidney and how they describe situations in which man retreats from his surroundings. The first segment of this thesis focuses on the alienation of II Cortegiano, how the courtier relates first, to his superior and later, how the intimacies which the courtier shares with women are weakened by his refusal to participate equally in this relationship. There are positive side-effects to this withdrawal from society, according to Castiglione, who shows how the Urbino nobility's impulse to create is stronger in a cloistered environment than in a more public climate. The depiction of the perfect man aspirations while serving as a beneficially political means by which to instruct the prince. In Chapter Two the shift of the thesis moves to Sir Philip Sidney's youthful courtier in Astrophil and Stella. The poet retreats from society in order to develop his own truthful language of love to Stella. I conclude that although alienation carries along with it the negative baggage that we in modern times impose on it, for the Renaissance artist isolation provided the atmosphere necessary for fruitful invention.
