Primary radiolytic species such as the solvated electron (es–) and Cl2•– are key to predicting radiation effects on the long-term behavior of molten salt reactor fuel.

Acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) has been proposed for inclusion in advanced, single-cycle, used nuclear fuel reprocessing solvent systems for the reduction and complexation of plutonium and neptunium ions. For this application, a detailed description of the fundamental degradation of AHA in dilute aqueous nitric acid is required. To this end, we present a comprehensive, multiscale computer model for the coupled radiolytic and hydrolytic degradation of AHA in aqueous sodium nitrate and nitric acid solutions. Rate coefficients for the reactions of AHA and hydroxylamine (HA) with the oxidizing nitrate radical were measured for the first time using electron pulse radiolysis and used as inputs for the kinetic model. The computer model results are validated by comparison to experimental data from steady-state gamma ray irradiations, for which the agreement is excellent. The presented model accurately predicts the yields of the major degradation products of AHA: acetic acid, HA, nitrous oxide, and molecular hydrogen.

Room temperature post-irradiation measurements of diffuse reflectance and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies were made to characterize the long-lived radiation-induced species formed from the gamma irradiation of solid KCl, MgCl2, and ZnCl2 salts up to 100 kGy. The method used showed results consistent with those reported for electron and gamma irradiation of KCl in single crystals. Thermal bleaching of irradiated KCl demonstrated accelerated disaggregation of defect clusters above 400 K, due to decomposition of Cl3−. The defects formed in irradiated MgCl2 comprised a mixture of Cl3−, F-centers, and Mg+ associated as M-centers. Further, Mg metal cluster formation was also observed at 100 kGy, in addition to accelerated destruction of F-centers above 20 kGy. Irradiated ZnCl2 afforded the formation of Cl2− due to its high ionization potential and crystalline structure, which decreases recombination. The presence of aggregates in all cases indicates the high diffusion of radicals and the predominance of secondary processes at 295 K. Thermal bleaching studies showed that chloride aggregates’ stability increases with the ionization potential of the cation present. The characterization of long-lived radiolytic transients of pure salts provides important information for the understanding of complex salt mixtures under the action of gamma radiation.

Knowledge of structural and thermal properties of molten salts is crucial for understanding and predicting their stability in many applications such as thermal energy storage and nuclear energy systems. Probing the behavior of metal contaminants in molten salts is presently limited to either foreign ionic species or metal nanocrystals added to the melt. To bridge the gap between these two end states and follow the nucleation and growth of metal species in molten salt environment in situ, we use synchrotron X-rays as both a source of solvated electrons for reducing Ni2+ ions added to ZnCl2 melt and as an atomic-level probe for detecting formation of zerovalent Ni nanoparticles. By combining extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis with X-ray absorption near edge structure modeling, we obtained the average size and structure of the nanoparticles and proposed a radiation-induced reduction mechanism of metal ions in molten salts.

A detailed understanding of the mechanisms and effects of radiation damage in phyllosilicate minerals is a necessary component of the evaluation of the safety case for a deep geological disposal facility (GDF) for radioactive waste. Structural and chemical changes induced by alpha-particle damage will affect the performance of these minerals as reactive barrier materials (both in the near and far-field) over time scales relevant to GDF integrity. In this study, two examples of chlorite group minerals have been irradiated at a-particle doses comparable to those predicted to be experienced by the clay buffer material surrounding high-level radioactive waste canisters. Crystallographic aberrations induced by the focused He-4(2+) ion beam are revealed via high-resolution, microfocus X-ray diffraction mapping. Interlayer collapse by up to 0.5 angstrom is prevalent across both macrocrystalline and microcrystalline samples, with the macrocrystalline specimen displaying a breakdown of the phyllosilicate structure into loosely connected, multioriented crystallites displaying variable lattice parameters. The damaged lattice parameters suggest a localized breakdown and collapse of the OH(- )rich, "brucite-like" interlayer. Microfocus Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy illustrates this defect accumulation, manifest as a severe damping of the X-ray absorption edge. Subtle Fe2+/Fe3+ speciation changes are apparent across the damaged structures. A trend toward Fe reduction is evident at depth in the damaged structures at certain doses (8.76 X 10(15) alpha particles/cm(2)). Interestingly, this reductive trend does not increase with radiation dose; indeed, at the maximum dose (1.26 x 10(16) alpha particles/cm(2)) administered in this study, there is evidence for a slight increase in Fe binding energy, suggesting the development of a depth-dependent redox gradient concurrent with light ion damage. At the doses examined here, these damaged structures are likely highly reactive, as sorption capacity will, to an extent, be largely enhanced by lattice disruption and an increase in available "edge" sites.

The use of ion beams to estimate materials performance for nuclear energy applications is advancing at a rapid rate with ion irradiations having been shown to produce radiation effects data of direct relevance for understanding neutron-induced displacement damage. Ion beam irradiation shows considerable promise for assisting in down selecting candidate materials for use in nuclear energy systems. Furthermore, ion beams allow rapid achievement of materials damage levels not accessible by neutron irradiation in test reactors due to cost and time constraints. Compared to test reactor irradiations, the relatively open configuration of ion beam irradiations allows capture of data on the effects of irradiation under very specific conditions of temperature, radiation dose, and radiation dose rate that are difficult or impossible to achieve otherwise. There are still multiple challenges to the deployment of ion beam data in support of reactor materials qualification arising from the lack of a detailed mechanistic understanding of potential difference between ion-induced and neutron induced materials damage. Recently, the Nuclear Science User Facilities presented a roadmap for the development and enhancement of current U.S. ion beam irradiation technologies within university and national laboratory settings, and especially for the deployment of new highly controlled in situ interrogation of materials during irradiation to provide dynamic and mechanistic data for model development. In this presentation, the status and capabilities of relevant U.S. ion beam facilities will be summarized and recommended “best practices” for performing ion irradiations will be described. The potential role of ion beam irradiations to assist the development and deployment of reactor materials will be outlined. Key objectives include developing methods for rapid and cost-effective materials selection and development, characterizing fundamental material response under irradiation, and developing a robust mechanistic understanding of microstructure evolution under irradiation (including development and validation of reliable predictive models for microstructure evolution).

To facilitate the development of molten salt reactor technologies, a fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical properties of molten salts under the combined conditions of high temperature and intense radiation fields is necessary. Optical spectroscopic (UV-Vis-near IR) and electrochemical techniques are powerful analytical tools to probe molecular structure, speciation, thermodynamics, and kinetics of solution dynamics. Here, we report the design and fabrication of three custom-made apparatus: (i) a multi-port spectroelectrochemical furnace equipped with optical spectroscopic and electrochemical instrumentation, (ii) a high-temperature cell holder for time-resolved optical detection of radiolytic transients in molten salts, and (iii) a miniaturized spectroscopy furnace for the investigation of steady-state electron beam effects on molten salt speciation and composition by optical spectroscopy. Initial results obtained with the spectroelectrochemical furnace (i) and high-temperature cell holder (ii) are reported.

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd A novel method has been implemented to prepare metal oxide nanopowders covered with known quantities of adsorbed water; we subsequently studied the γ-radiolysis of ZrO2 nanopowders covered with H2O layers. H2 yields from the adsorbed water radiolysis are of importance in multiple industrial contexts – the nuclear industry being a prime example. Measured H2 yields at water coverages of just below and above one monolayer are around 350 times greater than for neat water, but these yields decrease rapidly with increasing water loading of the ZrO2 nanoparticles, approaching the yield of bulk water at coverages of tens of water layers. The observed plateau of the yields at 0.5 to 2.0 monolayers coverage can be explained by the ease with which electronic excitations in the ZrO2 can be transferred across the interface to the first one or two adsorbed water layers. However, with increasing water loading, energy transfer to water layers further away from the interface becomes less efficient, and above ~30 water layers, most of the water is not affected by any exciton formation in the ZrO2.

In situ monitoring of corrosion processes is important to fundamentally understand the kinetics and evolution of materials in harsh environments. A quasi in situ transmission electron microscopy technique was utilized to study microstructural and chemical evolution of a Ni-20Cr disc sample exposed to molten KCl-MgCl2 salt for 60 s in consecutive 20 s iterations. In situ synchrotron X-ray nanotomography was performed to characterize the morphological evolution of a Ni-20Cr microwire exposed to molten KCl-MgCl2. Both techniques captured key corrosion events and revealed mechanisms at different time and length scales, potentially bringing greater insights and deeper understanding beyond conventional analysis.

A computational Monte Carlo simulation approach for modeling the thermalization of low-energy electrons is presented. The simulation methods rely on, and use, experimentally based cross sections for elastic and inelastic collisions. To demonstrate the different simulation options, average numbers of interactions and the range of low-energy electrons with initial energies ranging from 1 to 20 eV are calculated for density normalized gaseous water. Experimental gas-phase cross sections for (subexcitation) electrons of energies in the range of 1-20 eV were taken from the compilation of Hayashi. The ballistic collision-by-collision simulations provide information on the intricacies of the thermalization processes not available experimentally. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Ceria particles with different specific surface areas (SSA) were contaminated with chloride and water, then heat treated at 500 and 900 °C to investigate sorption behaviour of these species on metal oxides. Results from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy showed chloride and water adsorption onto particles increased with surface area and that these species were mostly removed on heat treatment (from 6.3 to 0.8 at% Cl- on high SSA and from 1.4 to 0.4 at% on low SSA particles). X-ray diffraction revealed that chloride was not incorporated into the bulk ceria structure, but crystal size increased upon contamination. Ce LIII-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed that chloride was not present in the first co-ordination sphere around Ce(IV) ions, so was not bonded to Ce as chloride in the bulk structure. Sintering of contaminated high SSA particles occurred with heat treatment at 900 °C, and they resembled low SSA particles synthesised at this temperature. Physical chloride-particle interactions were investigated using electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis, showing that chloride was homogeneously distributed on ceria and that reduction of porosity did not trap surface-sorbed chloride inside the particles as surface area was reduced during sintering. This has implications for stabilisation of chloride-contaminated PuO2 for long term storage.

This article describes the radiation facilities and associated sample preparation, management, and analysis equipment currently in place at the Dalton Cumbrian Facility, a facility which opened in 2011 to support the UK’s nuclear industry. Examples of measurements performed using these facilities are presented to illustrate their versatility and the breadth of research they make possible. Results are presented from research which furthers our understanding of radiation damage to polymeric materials, radiolytic yield of gaseous products in situations relevant to nuclear materials, radiation chemistry in light water reactor cooling systems, material chemistry relevant to immobilization of nuclear waste, and radiation-induced corrosion of fuel cladding elements. Applications of radiation chemistry relevant to health care are also described. Research concerning the mechanisms of radioprotection by dietary carotenoids is reported. An ongoing open-labware project to develop a suite of modular sample handling components suited to radiation research is described, as is the development of a new neutron source able to provide directional beams of neutrons.

The rate of reduction of hexavalent 243Am due to self-radiolysis was measured across a range of total americium and nitric acid concentrations. These so-called autoreduction rates exhibited zero-order kinetics with respect to the concentration of hexavalent americium, and pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to the total concentration of americium. However, the rate constants did vary with nitric acid concentration, resulting in values of 0.0048 ± 0.0003, 0.0075 ± 0.0005, and 0.0054 ± 0.0003 h-1 for 1.0, 3.0, and 6.5 M HNO3, respectively. This indicates that reduction is due to reaction of hexavalent americium with the radiolysis products of total americium decay. The concentration changes of Am(III), Am(V), and Am(VI) were determined by UV-vis spectroscopy. The Am(III) molar extinction coefficients are known; however, the unknown values for the Am(V) and Am(VI) absorbances across the studied range of nitric acid concentrations were determined by sensitivity analysis in which a mass balance with the known total americium concentration was obtained. The new extinction coefficients and reduction rate constants have been tabulated here. Multiscale radiation chemical modeling using a reaction set with both known and optimized rate coefficients was employed to achieve excellent agreement with the experimental results, and indicates that radiolytically produced nitrous acid from nitric acid radiolysis and hydrogen peroxide from water radiolysis are the important reducing agents. Since these species also react with each other, modeling indicated that the highest concentrations of these species available for Am(VI) reduction occurred at 3.0 M HNO3. This is in agreement with the empirical finding that the highest rate constant for autoreduction occurred at the intermediate acid concentration.

Charge cycling cross sections of lithium and helium ions are measured for atomic metal films of titanium, zirconium and copper. The material dependence of the measured charge state fractions is investigated and compared with the material density, electron density, mean ionization potential and Fermi level. The experimental data quantitatively agrees with previously documented charge exchange cross sections for thin films and shows the expected increase in the fraction of higher charge states with increasing velocity, over the ion velocity range considered. There is an observable material dependence of the charge state fraction. The measured charge state distributions are expressed as a mean charge state and compared with various mean and effective charge formalisms. The effective charge models are demonstrated to be inadequate representations of the measured mean charge states for the ions and films probed in this study.

The recent development of facile methods to oxidize trivalent americium to its higher valence states holds promise for the discovery of new chemistries and critical insight into the behavior of the 5f electrons. However, progress in understanding high-valent americium chemistry has been hampered by americium's inherent ionizing radiation field and its concomitant effects on americium redox chemistry. Any attempt to understand high-valent americium reduction and/or disproportionation must account for the effects of these radiolytic processes. Therefore, we present a complete, quantitative, mechanistic description of the radiation-induced redox chemistry of the americyl oxidation states in aerated, aqueous nitric acid, as a function of radiation quality (type and energy) and solution composition using multiscale modeling calculations supported by experiment. The reduction of Am(VI) to Am(V) was found to be most sensitive to the effects of ionizing radiation, undergoing rapid reductions with the steady-state products of aqueous HNO3 radiolysis, i.e., HNO2, H2O2, and HO2•, which dictated its practical lifetime under acidic conditions. In contrast, Am(V) is only susceptible to radiolytic oxidation, mainly through its reactions with NO3•, and is notably radiation-resistant with respect to direct one-electron reduction to produce Am(IV). Our multiscale modeling calculations predict that the lifetime of Am(V) is dictated by its rate of disproportionation, 2AmO2+ + 4Haq+ → AmO22+ + Am4+ + 2H2O, with a fourth-order dependence on [Haq+] in agreement with previous experimental findings, giving an optimized rate coefficient of k = 2.27 × 10-6 M-5 s-1. This disproportionation initially produces Am(IV) and Am(VI) species, but the lack of any spectroscopic evidence in our study for Am(IV) suggests that solvent reduction of this cation occurs rapidly. The ultimate product of all the Am(VI)/Am(V) irradiations is Am(III), which shows great stability in an irradiation field.

This work utilizes electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to identify oxidation state of alloying elements in Ni-based alloys after exposure to molten chloride salt systems. Pure Ni and Ni-20Cr model alloy were corroded in molten ZnCl2 and KCl-MgCl2 under argon atmosphere at various temperatures. Oxidation states of Cr (Cr3+) and Ni (Ni2+) in the molten salt after corrosion were determined by monitoring changes in the L2,3 edges of corresponding EELS spectra. Oxidation state mapping technique using principal component analysis and multiple linear least squares fitting in HyperSpy Python package was developed.

A critical radiation damage assessment of the materials that will be present in a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) for radioactive waste is a priority for building a safety case. Detailed analysis of the effects of high-energy α-particle damage in phyllosilicates such as mica is a necessity, as these are model structures for both the clay-based backfill material and the highly sorbent components of a crystalline host rock. The α-radiation stability of biotite mica [general formula: K(Mg,Fe) 3 (Al,Si 3 O 10 )(F,OH) 2 ] has been investigated using the 5 MV tandem pelletron at the University of Manchester’s Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF) and both the microfocus spectroscopy (I18) and core X-ray absorption spectroscopy (B18) beamlines at Diamond Light Source (U.K.). Microfocus X-ray diffraction mapping has demonstrated extensive structural aberrations in the mica resulting from controlled exposure to the focused 4 He 2+ ion (α-particle) beam. Delivered doses were comparable to a-particle fluences expected in the highly active, near-field of a GDF. At doses up to 6.77 displacements per atom (dpa) in the region of highest particle fluence, biotite mica displays a heterogeneous structural response to irradiation on a micrometer scale, with sequential dilation and contraction of regions of the structure perpendicular to the sheets, as well as a general overall contraction of the phyllosilicate layer spacing. At the peak of ion fluence, the structure collapses under a high point defect density and amorphous areas are pervasive among altered domains of the original lattice. Such structural alterations are likely to affect the material’s capacity to sorb and retain escaped radionuclides over long timescales; increased edge site availability may favor increased sorption while interlayer uptake will likely be reduced due to collapse. Radiation-induced reduction of structural iron at the region of highest structural damage across an α-particle’s track has been demonstrated by Fe K -edge X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) and local structural disorder has been confirmed by analysis of both potassium K -edge XANES and Fe K -edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. An infrared absorption study of deformations in the OH − stretching region, along with electron probe microanalysis complements the synchrotron data presented here.

A thorough understanding of radiation effects on molten salt media is necessary to support the design, development, and deployment of molten salt reactor, using either fuel salt or solid fuel with salt as the coolant. Fundamental issues include the determination of the initial yields and reactivity of the primary radiolytic species, i.e., the solvated electron (esolv –), chlorine atom (Cl•), and dichloride radical anion (Cl2 •–) as their reactivity varies depending on the environment such as the salt cation and temperature. Here we report on the reaction kinetics for esolv – and Cl2 •– in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic doped with Zn2+ ions. Electron pulse radiolysis absorption spectroscopy was used to observe the transient behavior of esolv – and Cl2 •– on the nanosecond to microsecond time scale. Experiments were performed using the Brookhaven National Laboratory Laser-Electron Accelerator Facility (LEAF)1 and utilizing a recently developed high-temperature sample holder.2 Decay kinetics of of esolv – and Cl2 •– in 9.41 mM ZnCl2 in LiCl-KCl are shown in the figure. esolv – and Cl2 •– decays in different time scale due to different reaction kinetics and decay speed increase as temperature. Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are a potential game-changing technology for next-generation nuclear power. Although the MSR concept was demonstrated at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the 1960’s, it had not gathered attention from commercial vendors until recently. A fundamental knowledge of salt chemistry, including the speciation and solubility of corrosion and fission products is central to the safe and reliable operation of MSRs. The structural properties of fused salt solutions, especially the coordination geometry around the metal ions in the melt, are intricately dependent on the melt composition and temperature. In this work, a combination of in-situ electrochemistry and optical absorption spectroscopy techniques are utilized to understand the speciation and structure of lanthanides in molten chloride salts as a function of temperature, concentration and melt composition. The spectroelectrochemistry of metal species in molten salt media can be used as a potential process monitoring technique enabling the quantitative measurement of lanthanide and actinide metals within molten salt reactors or nuclear fuel pyro-processing applications. The presence of a metal oxide surface can significantly alter the product yield distribution during the radiolysis of water with some metal oxides such as ZrO2 or CeO2, increasing the yield of H2 during the irradiation of water adsorbed on the oxide as compared to liquid water, while other oxides such as PuO2 decrease H2 yields. In this study, the γ-ray radiolysis of the ZnO/H2O system was investigated. Surprisingly, both O2 and H2 were produced in similar quantities. The production of O2 is unexpected as no, or negligible, amounts of O2 have been observed for the radiolysis of water adsorbed on other oxides. Molecular oxygen production is observed during the radiolysis of both wet and dry ZnO, indicating that the source of at least some of the O2 is the bulk oxide. The production of H2 due to the radiolysis of water adsorbed on ZnO is an order of magnitude greater than for pure water. This increase is likely due to an energy-transfer process from the oxide to the adsorbed water molecules. However, the radiolysis of aqueous suspensions of ZnO resulted in lower radiolytic H2 yields than for pure water.

The yield of molecular hydrogen, as a function of nitric acid concentration, from the α-radiolysis of aerated nitric acid and its mixtures with sulfuric acid containing plutonium or americium has been investigated. Comparison of experimental measurements with predictions of a Monte Carlo radiation track chemistry model shows that, in addition to scavenging of the hydrated electron, its precursor, and the hydrogen atom, the quenching of excited state water is important in controlling the yield of molecular hydrogen. In addition, increases in solution acidity cause a significant change in the track reactions, which can be explained as resulting from scavenging of e aq - by H aq + to form H • . Although plutonium has been shown to be an effective scavenger of precursors of molecular hydrogen below 0.1 mol dm -3 nitrate, previously reported effects of plutonium on G(H 2 ) α between 1 and 10 mol dm -3 nitric acid were not reproduced. Modeling results suggest that plutonium is unlikely to effectively compete with nitrate ions in scavenging the precursors of molecular hydrogen at higher nitric acid concentrations, and this was confirmed by comparing molecular hydrogen yields from plutonium solutions with those from americium solutions. Finally, comparison between radionuclide, ion accelerator experiments, and model predictions leads to the conclusion that the high dose rate of accelerator studies does not significantly affect the measured molecular hydrogen yield. These reactions provide insight into the important processes for liquors common in the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel and the storage of highly radioactive liquid waste prior to vitrification.

We have developed a new irradiation facility that allows to perform accelerated damage tests of nuclear reactor materials at temperatures up to 400 °C using the intense proton (

Picosecond pulse radiolysis measurements have been performed in neutral and highly acidic aqueous solutions containing silver ions at different concentrations. Silver ion reduction is used to understand the ultrafast chemistry of irradiated water and aqueous solutions. The absorption band measured at the end of the 7-ps electron pulses has an intense band with a maximum at 360 nm due to the formation of silver atoms. Kinetics shows that the amount of silver atom formed at the end of the electron pulse in phosphoric acid solutions is greater than that in neutral water. This unexpectedly high yield of silver atom formation cannot be explained solely by the reaction between silver ions and solvated electrons in neutral solutions nor by the reaction with hydrogen atoms in phosphoric acid solutions. To explain the observed ultrafast reduction of silver ions, the presolvated electron, be it free or paired to the hydronium cation, must react very quickly with a silver ion, potentially competing with geminate recombination of the electron and its sibling radical cation.

We report on the novel utilisation of a circular multi-reflection (CMR) cell applied to materials ageing experiments. This enabled trace gas detection within a narrow interfacial region located between two sample materials and remotely interrogated with near-infrared sources combined with fibre-optic coupling. Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy was used to detect water vapour and carbon dioxide at wavelengths near 1,358 and 2,004 nm, respectively, with corresponding detection limits of 7 and 1,139 ppm m Hz−0.5. The minimum detectable absorption was estimated to be 2.82 × 10−3 over a 1-s average. In addition, broadband absorption spectroscopy was carried out for the detection of acetic acid, using a super-luminescent light emitting diode centred around 1,430 nm. The 69 cm measurement pathlength was limited by poor manufacturing tolerances of the spherical CMR mirrors and the consequent difficulty of collecting all the cell output light.

With the announcement of the U.K. new nuclear build and the requirement to decommission old facilities, researchers require bespoke facilities to undertake experiments to inform decision making. This paper describes development of The University of Manchester’s Dalton Cumbrian Facility, a custom built research environment which incorporates a 5 MV tandem ion accelerator as well as a self-shielded 60 Co irradiator. The ion accelerator allows the investigation into the radiolytic consequences of various charged particles, including protons, alpha particles and a variety of heavier (metal and nonmetal) ions, while the 60 Co irradiator allows the effects of gamma radiation to be studied. Some examples of work carried out at the facility are presented to demonstrate how this equipment can improve our mechanistic understanding of various aspects of the deleterious effects of radiation in the nuclear industry. These examples include applications in waste storage and reprocessing as well as geological storage and novel surveying techniques. The outlook for future research is also discussed.

Comparison of experimental measurements of the yield of molecular hydrogen produced in the gamma radiolysis of water and aqueous nitrate solutions with predictions of a Monte Carlo track chemistry model shows that the nitrate anion scavenging of the hydrated electron, its precursor, and hydrogen atom cannot account for the observed decrease in the yield at high nitrate anion concentrations. Inclusion of the quenching of excited states of water (formed by either direct excitation or reaction of the water radical cation with the precursor to the hydrated electron) by the nitrate anion into the reaction scheme provides excellent agreement between the stochastic calculations and experiment demonstrating the existence of this short-lived species and its importance in water radiolysis. Energy transfer from the excited states of water to the nitrate anion producing an excited state provides an additional pathway for the production of nitrogen containing products not accounted for in traditional radiation chemistry scenarios. Such reactions are of central importance in predicting the behavior of liquors common in the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel and the storage of highly radioactive liquid waste prior to vitrification.

Combined microfocus XAS and XRD analysis of α-particle radiation damage haloes around thorium-containing monazite in Fe-rich biotite reveals changes in both short- and long-range order. The total α-particles flux derived from the Th and U in the monazite over 1.8 Ga was 0.022 α particles per atomic component of the monazite and this caused increasing amounts of structural damage as the monazite emitter is approached. Short-range order disruption revealed by Fe K-edge EXAFS is manifest by a high variability in Fe–Fe bond lengths and a marked decrease in coordination number. XANES examination of the Fe K-edge shows a decrease in energy of the main absorption by up to 1 eV, revealing reduction of the Fe3+ components of the biotite by interaction with the 24He2+, the result of low and thermal energy electrons produced by the cascade of electron collisions. Changes in d spacings in the XRD patterns reveal the development of polycrystallinity and new domains of damaged biotite structure with evidence of displaced atoms due to ionization interactions and nuclear collisions. The damage in biotite is considered to have been facilitated by destruction of OH groups by radiolysis and the development of Frenkel pairs causing an increase in the trioctahedral layer distances and contraction within the trioctahedral layers. The large amount of radiation damage close to the monazite can be explained by examining the electronic stopping flux.

The yield of HNO2, as a function of absorbed dose and HNO3 concentration, from the α-radiolysis of aerated HNO3 solutions containing plutonium or americium has been investigated. There are significant differences in the yields measured from solutions of the two different radionuclides. For 0.1 mol dm–3 HNO3 solutions, the radiolytic yield of HNO2 produced by americium α-decay is below the detection limit, whereas for plutonium α-decay the yield is considerably greater than that found previously for γ-radiolysis. The differences between the solutions of the two radionuclides are a consequence of redox reactions involving plutonium and the products of aqueous HNO3 radiolysis, in particular H2O2 and HNO2 and its precursors. This radiation chemical behavior is HNO3 concentration dependent with the differences between plutonium and americium α-radiolysis decreasing with increasing HNO3 concentration. This change may be interpreted as a combination of α-radiolysis direct effects and acidity influencing the plutonium oxidation state distribution, which in turn affects the radiation chemistry of the system.

A multiscale modeling approach has been developed for the extended time scale long-term radiolysis of aqueous systems. The approach uses a combination of stochastic track structure and track chemistry as well as deterministic homogeneous chemistry techniques and involves four key stages: radiation track structure simulation, the subsequent physicochemical processes, nonhomogeneous diffusion-reaction kinetic evolution, and homogeneous bulk chemistry modeling. The first three components model the physical and chemical evolution of an isolated radiation chemical track and provide radiolysis yields, within the extremely low dose isolated track paradigm, as the input parameters for a bulk deterministic chemistry model. This approach to radiation chemical modeling has been tested by comparison with the experimentally observed yield of nitrite from the gamma radiolysis of sodium nitrate solutions. This is a complex radiation chemical system which is strongly dependent on secondary reaction processes. The concentration of nitrite is not just dependent upon the evolution of radiation track chemistry and the scavenging of the hydrated electron and its precursors but also on the subsequent reactions of the products of these scavenging reactions with other water radiolysis products. Without the inclusion of intratrack chemistry, the deterministic component of the multiscale model is unable to correctly predict experimental data, highlighting the importance of intratrack radiation chemistry in the chemical evolution of the irradiated system.

The decay mechanism of NO3(•) has been determined through a combination of experiment and calculation for 7 mol dm(-3) solutions of deaerated aqueous LiNO3 and HNO3, in the absence and presence of hydrazine (N2H4, N2H5(+), and N2H6(2+)). In the absence of hydrazine, the predominant NO3(•) decay pathways are strongly dependent upon the pH of the solution. For neat, neutral pH LiNO3 solutions (7 mol dm(-3)), NO3(•) produced by the pulse is fully consumed within 160 μs by OH(•) (37%), H2O (29%), NO2(-) (17%), and NO2 (17%). For acidic HNO3 solutions (7 mol dm(-3)), radiolytically produced NO3(•) is predominantly consumed within 1 ms by HNO2 (15%) and NO2 (80%). Intervening formulations exhibit the mechanistic transition from neat LiNO3 to neat HNO3. In highly acidic nitric acid solution, hydrazine exists mainly as N2H5(+) and N2H6(2+), both of which rapidly consume NO3(•) in addition to other decay mechanisms, with rate constants of 2.9 (±0.9) × 10(7) and 1.3 (±0.3) × 10(6) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1), respectively.

While many of the proposed uses of SiC in the nuclear industry involve systems that are assumed to be dry, almost all materials have dissociated chemisorbed water associated with their surface, which can undergo chemistry in radiation fields. Silicon carbide α-phase and β-phase nanoparticles with water were irradiated with γ-rays and 5 MeV 4He ions followed by the determination of the production of molecular hydrogen, H2, and characterization of changes in the particle surface. The yields of H2 from SiC–water slurries were always greater than expected from a simple mixture rule indicating that the presence of SiC was influencing the production of H2 from water, probably through an energy transfer from the solid to liquid phase. Although the increase in H2 yields was modest, a decrease in the water mass percentage led to an increase in H2 yields, especially for very low amounts of water. Surface analysis techniques included diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT), nitrogen absorption with the Brunauer – Emmett – Teller (BET) methodology for surface area determination, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Little change in the SiC surface was observed following radiolysis except for some conversion of β-phase SiC to the α-phase and the formation of SiO2 with He ion radiolysis.

The phenol(+)...Ar(2) complex has been characterized in a supersonic jet by mass analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy via different intermediate intermolecular vibrational states of the first electronically excited state (S(1)). From the spectra recorded via the S(1)0(0) origin and the S(1)β(x) intermolecular vibrational state, the ionization energy (IE) has been determined as 68,288 ± 5 cm(-1), displaying a red shift of 340 cm(-1) from the IE of the phenol(+) monomer. Well-resolved, nearly harmonic vibrational progressions with a fundamental frequency of 10 cm(-1) have been observed in the ion ground state (D(0)) and assigned to the symmetric van der Waals (vdW) bending mode, β(x), along the x axis containing the C-O bond. MATI spectra recorded via the S(1) state involving other higher-lying intermolecular vibrational states (σ(s)(1), β(x)(3), σ(s)(1)β(x)(1), σ(s)(1)β(x)(2)) are characterized by unresolved broad structures.

Experimental measurements of molecular hydrogen including the use of isotopic techniques are combined with track model calculations to determine H atom yields in the radiolysis of water. The production of H atoms in the radiolysis of water is relatively small, but is important for fundamental considerations. H atoms are formed by the decay of excited states of water at the sub-picosecond timescale and by hydrated electron reactions during the diffusion-kinetic evolution of the ion track up to microseconds. The competition between H atom loss by combination reactions and its formation by reactions of the hydrated electron makes prediction of the H atom kinetics very difficult. H atom yields determined by subtraction of total molecular hydrogen production in neat water from that observed in the formate solutions is found to agree well with the more direct measurement of HD using deuterated formate as a scavenger. H atom yields are found to decrease with the evolution of the radiation track and decrease with increasing LET. Monte Carlo track model calculations are used to analyze the measured experimental yields and to elucidate the underlying H atom kinetics in the radiolysis of water.

The yields of H2 and Cl- were determined in the radiolysis of deaerated, aerated, and water mixtures of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) powders with gamma-rays and 5 MeV He ions. H2 yields with gamma-rays are low at about 0.25 molecule/100 eV and they double with He ion radiolysis indicating a second order formation process. The production of H2 in the gamma-radiolysis of water-PVC mixtures is much greater than expected from the weight fraction of the components and is due to acidification of the aqueous phase by the evolution of HCl from the polymer. Cl- yields in the gamma-radiolysis of PVC with number average weights of 22,000, 47,000, and 99,000 Daltons are 19.6, 33.8, and 32.5 atoms/100 eV. Cl- continuously evolves from the polymer for days following radiolysis. The extremely large yields suggest that a chain process involving radicals stabilized on the polymeric chain are responsible. Reflectance UV/vis and infrared spectroscopy show subtle changes in the PVC with radiolysis while UV/vis absorption spectra clearly indicate the formation of polyenes with 1 to 11 units. Cl- formation is probably initiated by Cl radical production followed by an electron rearrangement mechanism along the PVC chain to produce more Cl- and polyenes.

The radiolysis of aqueous solutions of chloromethanes (dichloromethane, CH2Cl2; chloroform, CHCl3; and carbon tetrachloride, CCl4) was performed with γ-rays to doses sufficient to completely decompose the solute in order to estimate the effects of radiation on the long-term storage of mixed waste in enclosed containers. One of the main relevant products was the inorganic chloride anion, which increased in concentration with increasing radiation dose due to the reactions of radiolytic decomposition products of water with the chloromethane. The pH of the solutions was observed to decrease with irradiation due to the formation of H3O+ as the counter ion to Cl−, i.e. the main radiolytic decomposition product is hydrochloric acid. Polymer formation was observed in aerated solutions as a precipitate while deaerated solutions exhibited a slight turbidity.

Microbial communities have the potential to control the biogeochemical fate of some radionuclides in contaminated land scenarios or in the vicinity of a geological repository for radioactive waste. However, there have been few studies of ionizing radiation effects on microbial communities in sediment systems. Here, acetate and lactate amended sediment microcosms irradiated with gamma radiation at 0.5 or 30 Gy h −1 for 8 weeks all displayed NO 3 − and Fe(III) reduction, although the rate of Fe(III) reduction was decreased in 30-Gy h −1 treatments. These systems were dominated by fermentation processes. Pyrosequencing indicated that the 30-Gy h −1 treatment resulted in a community dominated by two Clostridial species. In systems containing no added electron donor, irradiation at either dose rate did not restrict NO 3 − , Fe(III), or SO 4 2− reduction. Rather, Fe(III) reduction was stimulated in the 0.5-Gy h −1 -treated systems. In irradiated systems, there was a relative increase in the proportion of bacteria capable of Fe(III) reduction, with Geothrix fermentans and Geobacter sp. identified in the 0.5-Gy h −1 and 30-Gy h −1 treatments, respectively. These results indicate that biogeochemical processes will likely not be restricted by dose rates in such environments, and electron accepting processes may even be stimulated by radiation.

Evaluating the radiation stability of mineral phases is a vital research challenge when assessing the performance of the materials employed in a Geological Disposal Facility for radioactive waste. This report outlines the setup and methodology for efficiently allowing the determination of the dose dependence of damage to a mineral from a single ion irradiated sample. The technique has been deployed using the Dalton Cumbrian Facility's 5 MV tandem pelletron to irradiate a suite of minerals with a controlled α-particle ((4)He(2+)) beam. Such minerals are proxies for near-field clay based buffer material surrounding radioactive canisters, as well as the sorbent components of the host rock.

The radiation chemical yields of the products derived from the triplet excited state produced in the radiolysis of liquid benzene with gamma-rays, 10 MeV 4He ions, and 10 MeV 12C ions have been determined. Iodine scavenging techniques have been used to examine the formation and role of radicals, especially the H atom and phenyl radical. For all irradiation types examined here, the increase in hydrogen iodide yields with increasing iodine concentration matches the increase in iodobenzene yields. This agreement suggests that the benzene triplet excited state is the common precursor for the H atom and the phenyl radical. Pulse radiolysis studies in liquid benzene have determined the rate coefficients for the reactions of phenyl radicals with iodine and with the solvent benzene to be 9.3 x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) and 3.1 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1), respectively. Direct measurements of polymer formation, which refers to trimers (C18) and higher order compounds (>C18), in liquid benzene radiolysis using gamma-rays, 4He ions, and 12C ions at relatively high doses have been performed using gel permeation chromatography. The yields of trimers increase from gamma-rays to 12C ions due to the increased importance of intratrack radical-radical reactions that can be scavenged by the radical scavenging reactions of iodine. On the other hand, the >C18 product yields decrease from gamma-rays to 12C ions. The structure of the polymer consists of a partly saturated ring as determined by infrared and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry studies. A schematic representation for the radiolytic decomposition of the benzene triplet excited state is presented.

Experimental measurements coupled with Monte Carlo track simulations have been used to examine the yields of hydrated electrons in the radiolysis of water with protons, helium ions, and carbon ions. Glycylglycine, in concentrations ranging from 10(-4) to 1 M, was employed as a scavenger and the production of the ammonium cation used as a probe of hydrated electron yields from about 2 ns to 20 mus. Monte Carlo track simulations employing diffusion-kinetic calculations of product yields are found to reproduce experimental observations satisfactorily. Model details are used to elucidate the heavy ion track physics and chemistry. Comparison of the heavy ion results with those found in gamma radiolysis shows intratrack reactions are significant on the nanosecond to microsecond time scale as the ion track relaxes, and that a constant (escape) yield is never attained on this time scale. Numerical interpolation techniques are used to obtain both track average and track segment yields for use in practical applications or comparison with other models. The model results give the first hints that initial ( approximately 5 ps) hydrated electron yields, and possibly other water decomposition products, are dependent on the type and energy of the incident radiation.

Rate coefficients for the reactions of hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals with various chloroethanes were determined in aqueous solutions using pulse radiolysis techniques. The rate coefficients for the hydrated electron increase from 0.17 x 10(9) to 16.3 x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) with increasing number of chlorine atoms from monochloroethane to hexachloroethane. Very little difference in rates is found between the isomers. Rate coefficients for the OH radicals range from 1 to 5 x 10(8) M(-1)s(-1) and have very little variation with the number of chlorine atoms except when no H atom is available on a carbon atom. The use of competition kinetics with low concentrations of SCN(-) as a reference is reviewed and suitable model simulations proposed. Possible explanations for the discrepancies between the previously published rate coefficients and the present values are offered.
