Mixed systems based on ionic liquids are promising innovative solvents due to their properties, which are strictly connected to the interactions that arise among the components. The present work investigates the intermolecular interactions of a mixed choline acetate and maleic acid system and their modifications with increasing acid content. MM/DFT calculations provided indications about the possible geometric configurations of the systems while Non-Covalent Interaction analysis was useful to describe and distinguish secondary interactions. The number of available configurations decreases at high acid concentration. Moreover, intramolecular hydrogen bonding was observed in all configurations except that in the most stable one of the lowest acid content mixture. Concomitantly, far-infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate intermolecular interactions and provided support to the computational results.

For this article, the interaction of tetrabutylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate (TBATFO) with either fumaric (FUM) or maleic (MAL) acid has been investigated. These acids are isomers and can be considered the trans and cis configurations of the same molecular geometry. When TBATFO is mixed with FUM, an eutectic point is obtained for a relative composition of 90-10 (molar ratio), with a melting point of ≈90 °C. If maleic acid is mixed with TBATFO, one obtains an inhomogeneous phase with the retention of a solid portion immersed in a liquid phase, even above 90 °C. DFT calculations helped to model the interaction between the components. It is suggested herein that TBATFO interacts more strongly with FUM than with MAL, due to possible interactions in two different sites for hydrogen bonding (HB) in FUM. In MAL, one of the HB sites is instead retained in the intramolecular interactions; therefore, fewer sites are available for intermolecular interactions. Infrared spectroscopy measurements have confirmed this scenario, in which the hydrogen bonds of the acid molecules are replaced by HB between the acid and the ionic couple: for both kinds of mixtures, the vibration region of the OH bonds is strongly affected by mixing. However, in the case of FUM, the vibrations of the SO3 group of the TFO anion are displaced, while they remain in practically the same frequency position in the case of MAL.

Ionic liquids are good candidates as the main component of safe electrolytes for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. The identification of a reliable algorithm to estimate the electrochemical stability of ionic liquids can greatly speed up the discovery of suitable anions able to sustain high potentials. In this work, we critically assess the linear dependence of the anodic limit from the HOMO level of 27 anions, whose performances have been experimentally investigated in the previous literature. A limited r Pearson’s value of ≈0.7 is found even with the most computationally demanding DFT functionals. A different model considering vertical transitions in a vacuum between the charged state and the neutral molecule is also exploited. In this case, the best-performing functional (M08-HX) provides a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 1.61 V2 on the 27 anions here considered. The ions which give the largest deviations are those with a large value of the solvation energy, and therefore, an empirical model that linearly combines the anodic limit calculated by vertical transitions in a vacuum and in a medium with a weight dependent on the solvation energy is proposed for the first time. This empirical method can decrease the MSE to 1.29 V2 but still provides an r Pearson’s value of ≈0.72.

Carbon capture and sequestration are the major applied techniques for mitigating CO2 emission. The marked affinity of carbon dioxide to react with amino groups is well known, and the amine scrubbing process is the most widespread technology. Among various compounds and solutions containing amine groups, in biodegradability and biocompatibility perspectives, amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) are a very promising class of materials having good CO2 absorption capacity. The reaction of amines with CO2 follows a multi-step mechanism where the initial pathway is the formation of the C−N bond between the NH2 group and CO2. The added product has a zwitterionic character and can rearrange to give a carbamic derivative. These steps of the mechanism have been investigated in the present study by quantum mechanical methods by considering three ILs where amino acid anions are coupled with choline cations. Glycinate, L-phenylalanilate and L-prolinate anions have been compared with the aim of examining if different local structural properties of the amine group can affect some fundamental steps of the CO2 absorption mechanism. All reaction pathways have been studied by DFT methods considering, first, isolated anions in a vacuum as well as in a liquid continuum environment. Subsequently, the role of specific interactions of the anion with a choline cation has been investigated, analyzing the mechanism of the amine–CO2 reaction, including different coupling anion–cation structures. The overall reaction is exothermic for the three anions in all models adopted; however, the presence of the solvent, described by a continuum medium as well as by models, including specific cation- -anion interactions, modifies the values of the reaction energies of each step. In particular, both reaction steps, the addition of CO2 to form the zwitterionic complex and its subsequent rearrangement, are affected by the presence of the solvent. The reaction enthalpies for the three systems are indeed found comparable in the models, including solvent effects.

Novel ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes based on the asymmetric (fluoromethylsulfonyl)(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (FTFSI)− anion, combined with the N-trimethyl-N-butyl-ammonium (N1114)+ and N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N(2-methoxyethyl)-ammonium (N122(2O1))+ cations, were successfully synthesized and investigated in terms of thermal, vibrational and electrochemical properties. Thermogravimetric measurements revealed that the ionic liquids are stable up to 300 °C (2% mass loss). Differential scanning calorimetry measurements evidenced no phase transition down to −90 °C, suggesting a transition towards a glass state at lower temperatures. Infrared spectroscopy measurements, for the first time performed on ILs containing FTFSI, could not detect any crystallization down to −140 °C. The frequency of the main absorption bands of the ILs are in good agreement with DFT calculations. The FTFSI ionic liquid electrolytes, containing 20% mol of LiTFSI, show no solid-liquid phase transition due to the asymmetry of the FTFSI− anion, increasing the −10 °C conductivity up to 10−4 S cm−1. These interesting ion transport properties remarkably extend the operative temperature range down to low temperatures. The FTFSI electrolytes exhibit remarkable electrochemical stability up to 4.8 V, this making them appealing for realizing safer and highly reliable lithium battery systems operating at high voltages.

We explore the structure of two ionic liquids based on the choline cation and the monoanion of the maleic acid. We consider two isomers of the anion (H-maleate, the cis-isomer and H-fumarate, the trans-isomer) having different physical chemical properties. H-maleate assumes a closed structure and forms a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond whereas H-fumarate has an open structure. X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics have been used to provide a reliable picture of the interactions which characterize the structure of the fluids. All calculations indicate that the choline cation prefers to connect mainly to the carboxylate group through OH⋯O interactions in both the compounds and orient the charged head N(CH3)3+ toward the negative portion of the anion. However, the different structure of the two anions affects the distribution of the ionic components in the fluid. The trans conformation of H-fumarate allows further interactions between anions through COOH and CO2− groups whereas intramolecular hydrogen bonding in H-maleate prevents this association. Our theoretical findings have been validated by comparing them with experimental X-ray data and infrared and Raman spectra.
