The consecutive magnetic ordering of the Ho and Ru ions in the pyrochlore Ho2Ru2O7 and their interplay are investigated by neutron scattering, magnetic and specific heat measurements. The Ru magnetic moments order at 95 K into an easy-plane antiferromagnetic state, while the Ho moments order at 1.55 K into an unsaturated ferromagnetic state that retains an extensive ground state entropy and present complex spin dynamics throughout the low temperature phase. These unexpected features are analyzed in terms of a fragmented ferromagnetic state equivalent to the pyrochlore kagome ice. Selection of this unusual state relies on a subtle compromise between long-range ferromagnetic interactions between holmium moments and a repulsive cubic field, both mediated by the ruthenium lattice., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

The magnetic properties of Ho-doped langasites (La:Ho)$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$ are dominated by the Ising-like magnetic moments of the Ho$^{3+}$ ions. In their saturated regime, the induced magnetic state breaks both time and space inversion symmetries, leading to a novel linear magnetoelectric effect. However, due to distortions induced by a shared Ga/Si occupancy of the 2d sites, resolving the microscopic nature of the magnetic configuration remains a difficult task. Here we combine polarized neutron diffraction and angular dependent magnetization experiments to determine the local distortions of the Ho$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in doped langasites (La$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$)$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$ with $x \approx 0.015$ and $x \approx 0.045$. We propose a model for a field-induced magnetic configuration with arbitrary orientations of the local Ising axis of Ho$^{3+}$ in distorted positions. The operations of broken local $C_2$ symmetry and rotations around the trigonal $C_3$ axis connect different sites, restoring the global P321 symmetry of the crystal and simplifying the description of the magnetic properties. The superposition of two distorted Ho$^{3+}$ positions connected by $C_2$ symmetry determines the local magnetic susceptibility tensor, which no longer appears Ising-like at low fields.

The possibilities of combining several degrees of freedom inside a unique material have recently been highlighted in their dynamics and proposed as information carriers in quantum devices where their cross-manipulation by external parameters such as electric and magnetic fields could enhance their functionalities. An emblematic example is that of electromagnons, spin-waves dressed with electric dipoles, that are fingerprints of multiferroics. Point-like objects have also been identified, which may take the form of excited quasiparticles. This is the case for magnetic monopoles, the exotic excitations of spin ices, that have been recently proposed to carry an electric dipole although experimental evidences remain elusive. Presently, we investigate the electrical signature of a classical spin ice and a related compound that supports quantum fluctuations. Our in-depth study clearly attributes magnetoelectricity to the correlated spin ice phase distinguishing it from extrinsic and single-ion effects. Our calculations show that the proposed model conferring magnetoelectricity to monopoles is not sufficient, calling for higher order contributions.

Geometrical frustration, as in pyrochlore lattices made of corner-sharing tetrahedra, precludes the onset of conventional magnetic ordering, enabling the stabilization of fluctuating spin states at low temperature. Disorder is a subtle ingredient that can modify the nature of these exotic non-ordered phases. Here, we study the interplay between disorder and magnetic frustration in the new pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ where the non magnetic site presents a charge disorder Nb$^{5+}$/Sc$^{3+}$. Its quantification with sophisticated diffraction techniques (electrons, X-rays, neutrons) allows us to estimate the distribution of the splitting of the magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ non-Kramers ground state doublets and to compare it with excitations measured in inelastic neutron scattering. Combining macroscopic and neutron scattering measurements, we show that a clear spin glass transition at 1 K stems out while retaining strong spin liquid correlations. Our results suggest that Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ stabilizes one of the novel disorder induced quantum spin liquid or topological glassy phases recently proposed theoretically., Comment: Main text: 9 pages, 5 figures ; Supplemental Material: 6 pages, 7 figures

Magnetic and crystallographic transitions in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi2Fe4O9 are investigated by means of infrared synchrotron-based spectroscopy as a function of temperature (20 - 300 K) and pressure (0 - 15.5 GPa). One of the phonon modes is shown to exhibit an anomalous softening as a function of temperature in the antiferromagnetic phase below 240 K, highlighting spin-lattice coupling. Moreover, under applied pressure at 40 K, an even larger softening is observed through the pressure induced structural transition. Lattice dynamical calculations reveal that this mode is indeed very peculiar as it involves a minimal bending of the strongest superexchange path in the pentagonal planes, as well as a decrease of the distances between second neighbor irons. The latter confirms the hypothesis made by Friedrich et al.,1 about an increase in the oxygen coordination of irons being at the origin of the pressure-induced structural transition. Co$^{2+}$ ions in an octahedral crystal field, stabilise a j$_{eff}$ = 1/2 ground state with an orbital degree of freedom and have been recently put forward for realising Kitaev interactions, a prediction we have tested by investigating spin dynamics in two cobalt honeycomb lattice compounds, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, using inelastic neutron scattering. We used linear spin wave theory to show that the magnetic spectra can be reproduced with a spin Hamiltonian including a dominant Kitaev nearest-neighbour interaction, weaker Heisenberg interactions up to the third neighbour and bond-dependent off-diagonal exchange interactions. Beyond the Kitaev interaction that alone would induce a quantum spin liquid state, the presence of these additional couplings is responsible for the zigzag-type long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperature in both compounds. These results provide evidence for the realization of Kitaev-type coupling in cobalt-based materials, despite hosting a weaker spin-orbit coupling than their 4d and 5d counterparts.

The significance of spin-lattice coupling in the phase diagram of the quantum spin-icepyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7 has been a topic of debate for some time. Here, we focus on the aspect of vibronic coupling, which occurs between the Tb3+ electronic levels and transverse acoustic phonons, by studying their dependence on a magnetic field applied along the cubic h111i direction. Our experimental THz spectroscopy measurements, combined with quantitative theoretical quantum calculations, show that indeed vibronic effects are observed at 3 K. An analysis incorporating quadrupolar spin-lattice effects in the Hamiltonian is therefore relevant in this compound, which is no longer optically isotropic but magnetically birefringent.

Neutron scattering, specific heat and magnetisation measurements on both powders and single crystals reveal that Dy$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ realizes the fragmented monopole crystal state in which antiferromagnetic order and a Coulomb phase spin liquid co-inhabit. The measured residual entropy is that of a hard core dimer liquid, as predicted. Inclusion of Coulomb interactions allows for a quantitative description of both the thermodynamic data and the magnetisation dynamics, with the energy scale given by deconfined defects in the emergent ionic crystal. Our data reveal low energy excitations, as well as a large distribution of energy barriers down to low temperatures, while the magnetic response to an applied field suggests that domain wall pinning is important; results that call for further theoretical modelling., Comment: 6 pages + supp. mat. 6 pages

The research field of magnetic frustration is dominated by triangle-based lattices but exotic phenomena can also be observed in pentagonal networks. A peculiar noncollinear magnetic order is indeed known to be stabilized in Bi2Fe4O9 materializing a Cairo pentagonal lattice. We present the spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. They reveal an unconventional excited state related to local precession of pairs of spins. The magnetic excitations are then modeled to determine the superexchange interactions for which the frustration is indeed at the origin of the spin arrangement. This analysis unveils a hierarchy in the interactions, leading to a paramagnetic state (close to the N\'eel temperature) constituted of strongly coupled dimers separated by much less correlated spins. This produces two types of response to an applied magnetic field associated with the two nonequivalent Fe sites, as observed in the magnetization distributions obtained using polarized neutrons., Comment: Article: 6 pages, 3 figures. In the multiferroic hexagonal manganite HoMnO3, inelastic neutron scattering and synchrotron based THz spectroscopy have been used to investigate the spin waves associated to the Mn order together with Ho crystal field excitations. While the Mn order sets in first below 80 K, a spin reorientation occurs below 37 K, a rare feature in the rare earth manganites. We show that severalHo crystal field excitations are present in the same energy range as the magnons, and that they are all affected by the spin reorientation. Moreover, several anomalous features are observed in the excitations at low temperature. Our analysis and calculations for the Mn spin waves and Ho crystal field excitations support Mn-Ho coupling mechanisms as well as coupling to the lattice affecting the dynamics.

We report the direct observation of a magnetic-feld induced long-wavelength spin spiral modulation in the chiral compound Ba3TaFe3Si2O14. This new spin texture emerges out of a chiral helical ground state, and is hallmarked by the onset of a unique contribution to the bulk electric polarization, the sign of which depends on the crystal chirality. The periodicity of the feld induced modulation, several hundreds of nm depending on the field value, is comparable to the length scales of mesoscopic topological defects such as skyrmions, merons and solitons. The phase transition and observed threshold behavior are consistent with a phenomenology based on the allowed Lifshitz invariants for the chiral symmetry of langasite, which intriguingly contain all the ingredients for the possible realization of topologically stable antiferromagnetic skyrmions.

We report single-crystal neutron diffraction study of the magnetic structure of the multiferroic compound YbMnO$_3$, a member of the hexagonal manganite family, in zero-field and under a magnetic field applied along the $c$-axis. We propose a scenario for the zero-field magnetic ordering and for the field-induced magnetic reorientation of the Mn and of the two Yb on distinct crystallographic sites, compatible with the macroscopic measurements, as well as with previous powder neutron diffraction experiment and results from other techniques (optical second harmonic generation, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy). Our study should contribute in settling some debated issues about the magnetic properties of this material, as part of a broader investigation of the entire hexagonal RMnO$_3$ (R = Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y) family.

The influence of a staggered molecular field in frustrated rare-earth pyrochlores, produced via the magnetic iridium occupying the transition metal site, can generate exotic ground states, such as the fragmentation of the magnetization in the Ho compound. At variance with the Ising Ho$^{3+}$ moment, we focus on the behavior of the quasi isotropic magnetic moment of the Gd$^{3+}$ ion at the rare-earth site. By means of macroscopic measurements and neutron scattering, we find a complex situation where different components of the magnetic moment contribute to two antiferromagnetic non-collinear arrangements: a high temperature all in - all out order induced by the Ir molecular field, and Palmer and Chalker correlations that tend to order at much lower temperatures. This is enabled by the anisotropic nature of the Gd-Gd interactions and requires a weak easy-plane anisotropy of the Gd$^{3+}$ moment due to the mixing of the ground state with multiplets of higher spectral terms., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The magnetic properties and magnetic structure are presented for CoPS$_3$, a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with a N\'eel temperature of $T_N \sim 120$ K. The compound is shown to have XY-like anisotropy in its susceptibility, and the anisotropy is analysed to extract crystal field parameters. For temperatures between 2 K and 300 K, no phase transitions were observed in the field-dependent magnetization up to 10 Tesla. Single-crystal neutron diffraction shows that the magnetic propagation vector is {\bf{k}}= $\left[010\right]$ with the moments mostly along the $\mathbf{a}$ axis and with a small component along the $\mathbf{c}$ axis, which largely verifies the previously-published magnetic structure for this compound. The magnetic Bragg peak intensity decreases with increasing temperature as a power law with exponent $2\beta = 0.60 \pm 0.01$ for $T > 0.9~T_N$., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

Since the seminal ideas of Berezinskii, Kosterlitz and Thouless, topological excitations are at the heart of our understanding of a whole novel class of phase transitions. In most of the cases, those transitions are controlled by a single type of topological objects. There are however some situations, still poorly understood, where two dual topological excitations fight to control the phase diagram and the transition. Finding experimental realization of such cases is thus of considerable interest. We show here that this situation occurs in BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, a spin-1/2 Ising-like quasi-one dimensional antiferromagnet when subjected to a uniform magnetic field transverse to the Ising axis. Using neutron scattering experiments, we measure a drastic modification of the quantum excitations beyond a critical value of the magnetic field. This quantum phase transition is identified, through a comparison with theoretical calculations, to be a transition between two different types of solitonic topological objects, which are captured by different components of the dynamical structure factor., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; 10 additional pages of supplemental information containing 6 figures

We report a single-crystal neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin 1/2 cuprate Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl, complemented by dielectric and electric polarization measurements. The study clarifies a number of open issues concerning this complex material, whose frustrated interactions on a kagome-like lattice, combined with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, are expected to stabilize an exotic canted antiferromagnetic order. In particular, we determine the nature of the structural transition occurring at 115 K, the magnetic structure below 25 K resolved in the updated space group, and the microscopic ingredients at the origin of this magnetic arrangement. This was achieved by an analysis of the measured gapped spin waves, which signifies the need of an unexpected and significant anisotropic exchange beyond the proposed Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Finally, we discuss the mutliferroic properties of this material with respect to the space group symmetries.

Chiral multiferroic langasites have attracted attention due to their doubly-chiral magnetic ground state within an enantiomorphic crystal. We report on a detailed resonant soft X-ray diffraction study of the multiferroic Ba$_3$TaFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ at the Fe $L_{2,3}$ and oxygen $K$ edges. Below $T_N$ ($\approx27K$) we observe the satellite reflections $(0,0,\tau)$, $(0,0,2\tau)$, $(0,0,3\tau)$ and $(0,0,1-3\tau)$ where $\tau \approx 0.140 \pm 0.001$. The dependence of the scattering intensity on X-ray polarization and azimuthal angle indicate that the odd harmonics are dominated by the out-of-plane ($\mathbf{\hat{c}}$-axis) magnetic dipole while the $(0,0,2\tau)$ originates from the electron density distortions accompanying magnetic order. We observe dissimilar energy dependences of the diffraction intensity of the purely magnetic odd-harmonic satellites at the Fe $L_3$ edge. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we show that this is a consequence of the loss of threefold crystal symmetry in the multiferroic phase.

The complexity embedded in condensed matter fertilizes the discovery of new states of matter, enriched by ingredients like frustration. Illustrating examples in magnetic systems are Kitaev spin liquids, skyrmions phases, or spin ices. These unconventional ground states support exotic excitations, for example the magnetic charges in spin ices, also called monopoles. Beyond their discovery, an important challenge is to be able to control and manipulate them. Here, we propose a new mechanism to inject monopoles in a spin ice through a staggered magnetic field. We show theoretically, and demonstrate experimentally in the Ho$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore iridate, that it results in the stabilization of a monopole crystal, which exhibits magnetic fragmentation. In this new state of matter, the magnetic moment fragments into an ordered part and a persistently fluctuating one. Compared to conventional spin ices, the different nature of the excitations in this fragmented state opens the way to novel tunable field-induced and dynamical behaviors.

In the spinel compound GeCo$_2$O$_4$, the Co$^{2+}$ pyrochlore sublattice presents remarkable magnetic field-induced behaviors that we unveil through neutron and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The N\'eel ordered magnetic phase is entered through a structural lowering of the cubic symmetry. In this phase, when a magnetic field is applied along a 2-fold cubic direction, a spin-flop transition of one fourth of the magnetic moments releases the magnetic frustration and triggers magnetostructural effects. At high field, these ultimately lead to an unusual spin reorientation associated to structural changes.

The origin of quantum fluctuations responsible for the spin liquid state in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has remained a long standing problem. By synchrotron-based terahertz measurements, we show evidence of strong coupling between the magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom that provides a path to the quantum melting process. As revealed by hybrid crystal electric field-phonon excitations that appear at 0.67 THz below 200 K, and around 0.42 THz below 50 K, the double vibronic process is unique for Tb$^{3+}$ in the titanate family due to adequate energy matching and strong quadrupolar moments. The results suggest that lattice motion can indeed be the driving force behind spin flips within the hybridized ground and first excited states, promoting quantum terms in the effective Hamiltonian that describes Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

We have studied the magnetic properties of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, which features a honeycomb lattice of magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions, through macroscopic characterization and neutron diffraction on a powder sample. We have shown that this material orders in a zig-zag antiferromagnetic structure. In addition to allowing a linear magnetoelectric coupling, this magnetic arrangement displays very peculiar spatial magnetic correlations, larger in the honeycomb planes than between the planes, which do not evolve with the temperature. We have investigated this behavior by Monte Carlo calculations using the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ model on a honeycomb lattice with a small interplane interaction. Our model reproduces the experimental neutron structure factor, although its absence of temperature evolution must be due to additional ingredients, such as chemical disorder or quantum fluctuations enhanced by the proximity to a phase boundary., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures

The quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising-like compound BaCo2V2O8 has been shown to be describable by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory in its gapless phase induced by a magnetic field applied along the Ising axis. Above 3.9 T, this leads to an exotic field-induced low-temperature magnetic order, made of a longitudinal incommensurate spin-density wave, stabilized by weak interchain interactions. By single-crystal neutron diffraction we explore the destabilization of this phase at a higher magnetic field. We evidence a transition at around 8.5 T towards a more conventional magnetic structure with antiferromagnetic components in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The phase diagram boundaries and the nature of this second field-induced phase are discussed with respect to previous results obtained by means of nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance, and in the framework of the simple model based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, which obviously has to be refined in this complex system., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report our investigation of the electronic and magnetic excitations of Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$ by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ir L$_3$ edge. The intra-$t_{2g}$ electronic transitions are analyzed using an atomic model, including spin-orbit coupling and trigonal distortion of the IrO$_6$ octahedron, confronted to {\it ab initio} quantum chemistry calculations. The Ir spin-orbital entanglement is quantified and its implication on the magnetic properties, in particular in inducing highly anisotropic magnetic interactions, is highlighted. These are included in the spin-wave model proposed to account for the dispersionless magnetic excitation that we observe at 90 meV. By counterbalancing the strong Ni$^{2+}$ easy-plane anisotropy that manifests itself at high temperature, the anisotropy of the interactions finally leads to the remarkable easy-axis magnetism reported in this material at low temperature.

The magnetic behavior of polycrystalline samples of Er$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Tb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores is studied by magnetization measurements and neutron diffraction. Both compounds undergo a magnetic transition at 140 and 130 K respectively, associated with an ordering of the Ir sublattice, signaled by thermomagnetic hysteresis. In Tb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, we show that the Ir molecular field leads the Tb magnetic moments to order below 40 K in the all-in/all-out magnetic arrangement. No sign of magnetic long range order on the Er sublattice is evidenced in Er$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ down to 0.6 K where a spin freezing is detected. These contrasting behaviors result from the competition between the Ir molecular field and the different single-ion anisotropy of the rare-earths on which it is acting. Additionally, this strongly supports the all-in/all-out iridium magnetic order.

We explore the spin dynamics emerging from the N\'eel phase of the chain compound antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8. Our inelastic neutron scattering study reveals unconventional discrete spin excitations, so called Zeeman ladders, understood in terms of spinon confinement, due to the interchain attractive linear potential. These excitations consist in two interlaced series of modes, respectively with transverse and longitudinal polarization. The latter have no classical counterpart and are related to the zero-point fluctuations that weaken the ordered moment in weakly coupled quantum chains. Our analysis reveals that BaCo2V2O8, with moderate Ising anisotropy and sizable interchain interactions, remarkably fulfills the conditions necessary for the observation of these longitudinal excitations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 additional pages of supplemental material with 2 figures; Journal ref. added; 1 page erratum added at the end with 1 figure

We used Raman and terahertz spectroscopies to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations and their cross-coupling in the hexagonal YMnO3 multiferroic. Two phonon modes are strongly affected by the magnetic order. Magnon excitations have been identified thanks to comparison with neutron measurements and spin wave calculations but no electromagnon has been observed. In addition, we evidenced two additional Raman active peaks. We have compared this observation with the anti-crossing between magnon and acoustic phonon branches measured by neutron. These optical measurements underly the unusual strong spin-phonon coupling.

We report on the magnetic properties of four isomorphous compounds of a family of quinternary oxalates down to 60 mK. In all these materials, the magnetic FeII ions with a strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy form a distorted kagome lattice, topologically equivalent to a perfect kagome one if nearest-neighbor interactions only are considered. All the compounds order at low temperature in an antiferromagnetic arrangement with magnetic moments at 120{\deg}. A remarkable magnetic behavior emerges below the N\'eel temperature in three compounds (with inter-kagome-layer Zr, Sn, Fe but not with Al): the spin anisotropy combined with a low exchange path network connectivity lead to domain walls intersecting the kagome planes through strings of free spins. These produce an unfamiliar slow spin dynamics in the ordered phase observed by AC susceptibility, evolving from exchange-released spin-flips towards a cooperative behavior on decreasing the temperature., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures

We have used soft x-ray magnetic diffraction at the Fe3+ L2,3 edges to examine to what extent the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction in Ba3NbFe3Si2O14 influences its low temperature magnetic structure. A modulated component of the moments along the c-axis is present, adding to the previously proposed helical magnetic configuration of co-planar moments in the a,b-plane. This leads to a helical-butterfly structure and suggests that both the multi-axial in-plane and the uniform out-of-plane Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya vectors are relevant. A non zero orbital magnetic signal is also observed at the oxygen K edge, which reflects the surprisingly strong hybridization between iron 3d and oxygen 2p states, given the nominal spherical symmetry of the Fe3+ half filled shell.

The hole-doped kagome lattice of Cu2+ ions in LaCuO2.66 was investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), electron spin resonance (ESR), electrical resistivity, bulk magnetization and specific heat measurements. For temperatures above ~180 K, the spin and charge properties show an activated behavior suggestive of a narrow-gap semiconductor. At lower temperatures, the results indicate an insulating ground state which may or may not be charge ordered. While the frustrated spins in remaining patches of the original kagome lattice might not be directly detected here, the observation of coexisting non-magnetic sites, free spins and frozen moments reveals an intrinsically inhomogeneous magnetism. Numerical simulations of a 1/3-diluted kagome lattice rationalize this magnetic state in terms of a heterogeneous distribution of cluster sizes and morphologies near the site-percolation threshold.

Employing the muon spin relaxation technique we evidence temperature independent magnetic fluctuations persisting down to the lowest temperatures in the samarium-based ($J=5/2$) kagome-lattice Langasite. A detailed bulk-magnetization characterization and comparison to the neodymium-based ($J=9/2$) compound allow us to assign the persistent spin dynamics to a quantum tunneling process. This is facilitated by pairwise anisotropic magnetic interactions, leading to a universal scaling of the muon relaxation. Our study reveals a remarkable analogy between weakly interacting half-integer-spin rare-earth magnets and molecular nanomagnets., Comment: 5 pages + 2 pages of supplementary information

BaCo2V2O8 is a nice example of a quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin system that can be described in terms of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics. This is explored in the present study where the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is thoroughly established up to 12 T using single-crystal neutron diffraction. We report magnetization and neutron scattering measurements down to 60 mK on a new family of Fe based kagome antiferromagnets, in which a strong local spin anisotropy combined with a low exchange path network connectivity lead to domain walls intersecting the kagome planes through strings of free spins. These produce unfamiliar slow spin dynamics in the ordered phase, evolving from exchange-released spin-flips towards a cooperative behavior on decreasing the temperature, probably due to the onset of long-range dipolar interaction. We present electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the acentric \FeLang, featuring a unique single-domain double-chiral magnetic ground state. Combining simulations of the ESR line-width anisotropy and the antiferromagnetic-resonance modes allows us to single out the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction as the leading magnetic anisotropy term. We demonstrate that the rather minute out-of-plane DM component $d_c=45$ mK is responsible for selecting a unique ground state, which endures thermal fluctuations up to astonishingly high temperatures., Comment: 4+ pages, 4 figures, 3+ pages of supplementary information with 2 additional figures, accepted for publication in PRL

We investigate the classical spin dynamics of the kagome antiferromagnet by combining Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations. We show that this model has two distinct low temperature dynamical regimes, both sustaining propagative modes. The expected gauge invariance type of the low energy low temperature out of plane excitations is also evidenced in the non linear regime. A detailed analysis of the excitations allows to identify ghosts in the dynamical structure factor, i.e propagating excitations with a strongly reduced spectral weight. From 59Co and 23Na NMR, we demonstrate the impact of the Na+ vacancy ordering on the cobalt electronic states in Na0.75CoO2: at long time scales, there is neither a disproportionation into 75 % Co3+ and 25 % Co4+ states, nor a mixed-valence metal with a uniform Co3.25+ state. Instead, the system adopts an intermediate configuration in which 30 % of the lattice sites form an ordered pattern of localized Co3+ states. Above 180 K, an anomalous mobility of specific Na+ sites is found to coexist with this electronic texture, suggesting that the formation of the latter may contribute to stabilizing the Na+ ordering. Control of the ion doping in these materials thus appears to be crucial for fine-tuning of their thermoelectric properties., Comment: 4 pages, to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

The macroscopic magnetic characterization of the Mn(II) - nitronyl nitroxide free radical chain (Mn(hfac)2(R)-3MLNN) evidenced its transition from a 1-dimensional behavior of ferrimagnetic chains to a 3-dimensional ferromagnetic long range order below 3 K. Neutron diffraction experiments, performed on a single crystal around the transition temperature, led to a different conclusion : the magnetic Bragg reflections detected below 3 K correspond to a canted antiferromagnet where the magnetic moments are mainly oriented along the chain axis. Surprisingly in the context of other compounds in this family of magnets, the interchain coupling is antiferromagnetic. This state is shown to be very fragile since a ferromagnetic interchain arrangement is recovered in a weak magnetic field. This peculiar behavior might be explained by the competition between dipolar interaction, shown to be responsible for the antiferromagnetic long range order below 3 K, and exchange interaction, the balance between these interactions being driven by the strong intrachain spin correlations. In the R$\_{3}$Ga$\_{5}$SiO$\_{14}$ compounds, the network R of rare earth cations form well separated planes of corner sharing triangles topologically equivalent to a kagom\'e lattice. Powder samples and single crystals with R = Nd and Pr were prepared and magnetostatic measurements were performed under magnetic field up to 10 T in the temperature range from 1.6 K to 400 K. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility at the high temperatures where only the quadrupolar term of the crystal electric field prevails, suggests that the Nd and Pr magnetic moments can be modeled as coplanar elliptic rotators perpendicular to the three fold axis of the crystal structure that interact antiferromagnetically. Nonetheless, a disordered phase that can be ascribed to geometric frustration persists down to the lowest temperature which is about 25 times smaller than the energy scale for the exchange interactions., Comment: 9 pages. 1 table, 5 figures. Crystallographic, magnetic and NMR properties of a NaxCoO2 single crystal with x~1 are presented. We identify the stoichiometric Na1CoO2 phase, which is shown to be a non-magnetic insulator, as expected for homogeneous planes of Co3+ ions with S=0. In addition, we present evidence that, because of slight average Na deficiency, chemical and electronic phase separation leads to a segregation of Na vacancies into the well-defined, magnetic, Na0.8CoO2 phase. The importance of phase separation is discussed in the context of magnetic order for x~0.8 and the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition for x->1., Comment: To appear in PRL
