Abstract

Psychologists face ethical and cultural intricacies in their work on a daily basis. Psychology graduate training and continuing education programs often focus mainly on common ethical issues and mainstream psychological services and settings. Although this provides a wealth of valuable information, it also necessary to look beyond the usual and mainstream. Ethics in Action brings together thirty-four psychologists and eight collaborating professionals from allied disciplines, including nursing, social work, emergency services, and veterinary medicine, to share wisdom gained from facing ethical questions in real-world practice. These knowledgeable contributors share their experiences working with new Canadians, religious minorities, Indigenous communities, and more. They address issues of self-care, teamwork, collaboration, and interprofessional practice. They share the challenges that can arise when working within long-term care facilities, rural settings, equine-therapy settings, academia, and with people in unique circumstances. Structured around the four ethical principles that form the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists, this book goes far beyond the basics, building awareness of the many complex and varied ethical issues practitioners may face. Each chapter includes reflection questions, challenging readers to better understand themselves and to prepare them to respond to complicated situations from an ethical perspective.

Abstract

Splitting and sharing inside an OPS/SCS prevents harms related to splitting and sharing outside of an OPS/SCS. Failure to allow splitting and sharing within exempted services increases risk for PWUD. Services that prohibit splitting and sharing experience scope creep when they have to police their own clients/participants. The results? PWUD are forced to split and share their drugs outside of the site, increasing the risk of experiencing discrimination, and criminalization. When arbitrary rules hinder accessibility to life saving services, the outcomes are fatal.

Abstract

Using the Universal Declaration of Ethical Principles for Psychologists as an ethical framework, some of the major successes, challenges and needs that psychology has regarding its responsibilities to society in the area of end-of-life decision making and active euthanasia are outlined in this paper. Four particular responsibilities are highlighted: (a) increase professional and scientific knowledge; (b) use psychological knowledge for beneficial purposes; (c) adequately train its members: and (d) encourage beneficial social structures and policies. For each responsibility, some of the major societal-level ethical issues and current needs discussed in the literature are identified, as well as ways that psychology has contributed to dealing with those issues and needs. In conclusion, several recommendations are offered regarding ways in which psychologists and psychology could increase its contribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. When Women Retire.

Abstract

Everyone should start planning for retirement with their first paycheck, yet most women do not begin to think about retirement until they are in their 40s and 50s, or only when they are jolted into it. Nonetheless, psychiatrists state that a woman&x2019; s happiness is largely dependent upon her control over her life, thus, if women do not plan events, they will be forced to simply react to them. Most women-because of being single, divorced, or widowed-are on their own without a safety net, role models, or much government assistance. Only 23 percent of all women who work ever collect a pension, and large numbers of elderly women live below the poverty level. Whatever a woman&x2019; s age, it is essential to begin formal financial planning immediately as a means of defining short-term and long-term goals and means by which these goals will be achieved.
