Brain vascular health worsens with age, as is made evident by resting grey matter cerebral blood flow (CBFGM) reductions and lengthening arterial transit time (ATTGM). Exercise training can improve aspects of brain health in older adults, yet its effects on CBFGM and ATTGM remain unclear. This randomised controlled trial assessed responses of CBFGM and ATTGM to a 26 week exercise intervention in 65 healthy older adults (control: n = 33, exercise: n = 32, aged 60–81 years), including whether changes in CBFGM or ATTGM were associated with changes in cognitive functions. Multiple-delay pseudo-continuous arterial spin labelling data were used to estimate resting global and regional CBFGM and ATTGM. Results showed no between-group differences in CBFGM or ATTGM following the intervention. However, exercise participants with the greatest cardiorespiratory gains (n = 17; ∆V̇O2peak >2 mL/kg/min) experienced global CBFGM reductions (-4.0 [-7.3, -0.8] mL/100 g/min). Cognitive functions did not change in either group and changes were not associated with changes in CBFGM or ATTGM. Our findings indicate that exercise training in older adults may induce global CBFGM reductions when high cardiorespiratory fitness gains are induced, but this does not appear to affect cognitive functions.

Abstract There has recently been great interest in the use of accelerometers onboard electronic transmitters to characterise various aspects of the ecology of wild animals. We review use cases and outline how these tools can provide opportunities for studying activity and survival, exercise physiology of wild animals, the response to stressors, energy landscapes and conservation planning tools, and the means with which to identify behaviours remotely from transmitted data. Accelerometer transmitters typically send data summaries to receivers at fixed intervals after filtering out static acceleration and calculating root-mean square error or overall dynamic body action of 2- or 3-axis acceleration values (often at 5–12.5 Hz) from dynamic acceleration onboard the tag. Despite the popularity of these transmitters among aquatic ecologists, we note that there is wide variation in the sampling frequencies and windows used among studies that will potentially affect the ability to make comparisons in the future. Accelerometer transmitters will likely become increasingly popular tools for studying finer scale details about cryptic species that are difficult to recapture and hence not suitable for studies using data loggers. We anticipate that there will continue to be opportunities to adopt methods used for analysing data from loggers to datasets generated from acceleration transmitters, to generate new knowledge about the ecology of aquatic animals.

Despite that the study of individual repeatability is a common topic in behavioral ecology, virtually nothing is known about inter-annual variability in the marine migratory behavior of iteroparous salmonids that can complete multiple feeding migrations in their lifespan. Behavioral data from 38 anadromous brown trout (Salmo trutta), tracked by acoustic telemetry in 2–3 consecutive marine feeding migrations in two Norwegian fjord systems, were analyzed for intra-individual repeatability in key aspects of their marine migration. Individual brown trout displayed significant inter-annual consistency in marine area use and in the timing of marine exit (i.e. when they returned to spawning rivers), but not in the timing of marine entry or the time spent in the marine environment each year. Our study raises new questions about how anadromous brown trout respond to changing conditions and anthropogenic factors in the marine environment. Intra-individual repeatability of brown trout linked to changing environmental conditions should therefore be a focus for future studies.

Exercise training has been proposed to counteract age-related cognitive decline through improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF hypothesis). Research has focused on cognitive domains like attention and processing speed, and one cross-sectional study reported a positive relationship between CRF and language production in older adults. In a randomized controlled trial, we investigated whether these benefits could extend to language comprehension in healthy older adults, and whether bilinguals, for whom language processing is more costly, would exhibit greater benefits than monolinguals. Eighty older English monolinguals and 80 older Norwegian-English bilinguals were randomized into either a 6-month exercise training group or into a passive control group. We assessed CRF (VO2peak) and language comprehension (reaction times to spoken word monitoring) in first (L1, all participants) and second language (L2, bilinguals only), before and after the intervention. We found that monolinguals in the exercise group (compared to the control group) were faster in comprehension following the intervention. Moreover, this effect was mediated by exercise-induced increases in VO2peak, supporting the CRF hypothesis. This extends previous cross-sectional research and establishes a causal link between exercise training and speeded comprehension in older monolinguals. However, despite inducing increased VO2peak, exercise training did not affect bilingual (L1 or L2) comprehension, and bilinguals in both groups were slower after the intervention period. Exploratory analyses suggested that this slowing may be driven by participants with low L2 proficiency, but further research is needed to examine whether bilingual language processing is in fact unaffected by exercise training and its consequent improvements in CRF. Background: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a 6‐month home‐based high‐intensity interval training (HIIT) intervention to improve peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak) and lactate threshold (LT) in older adults. Methods: Two hundred thirty‐three healthy older adults (60–84 years; 54% females) were randomly assigned to either 6‐month, thrice‐weekly home‐based HIIT (once‐weekly circuit training and twice‐weekly interval training) or a passive control group. Exercise sessions were monitored using a Polar watch and a logbook for objective and subjective data, respectively, and guided by a personal coach. The outcomes were assessed using a modified Balke protocol combining V̇O2peak and LT measures. General linear regression models assessed between‐group differences in change and within‐group changes for each outcome. Results: There was a significant between‐group difference in the pre‐to‐post change in V̇O2peak (difference: 1.8 [1.2; 2.3] mL/kg/min; exercise: +1.4 [1.0; 1.7] mL/kg/min [~5%]; control: −0.4 [−0.8; −0.0] mL/kg/min [approximately −1.5%]; effect size [ES]: 0.35). Compared with controls, the exercise group had lower blood lactate concentration (−0.7 [−0.9; −0.4] mmol/L, ES: 0.61), % of peak heart rate (−4.4 [−5.7; −3.0], ES: 0.64), and % of V̇O2peak (−4.5 [−6.1; −2.9], ES: 0.60) at the intensity corresponding to preintervention LT and achieved a higher treadmill stage (% incline) at LT (0.6 [0.3; 0.8]; ES: 0.47), following the intervention. Conclusion: This study highlights the effectiveness of a home‐based HIIT intervention as an accessible and equipment‐minimal strategy to induce clinically meaningful improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness in older adults. Over 6 months, the exercise group showed larger improvements in all outcomes compared with the control group. Notably, the LT outcome exhibited a more pronounced magnitude of change than V̇O2peak. The brown trout (Salmo trutta) is an iteroparous, anadromous salmonid that exhibits a complex continuum of feeding migration tactics, ranging from freshwater residency, to potamodromy, to estuarine migration, as well as short- to long-distance coastal migrations. While anadromous migrants are believed to play an important role in the species' population dynamics, little is known about the factors driving differences in the extent of individual marine habitat use. In this study, 32 brown trout veteran migrants were acoustically tagged prior to their seaward migration and sampled for indices of their nutritional state. Our findings suggest that (i) body condition factor differed among fish adopting different migratory tactics, with outer fjord migrant being in poorer condition; and (ii) within migratory groups, plasma triglyceride concentration was negatively correlated with the duration of marine residency. Results support the idea of condition-dependent migration in veteran migrants, with individual variation in nutritional state influencing the spatiotemporal aspects of marine habitat use. Furthermore, overall marine minimum survival during the summer feeding migration was 86%, the highest reported estimate for this life stage. BackgroundA higher risk of placenta previa after assisted reproductive technology (ART) is well established. The underlying mechanisms are poorly understood, but may relate to embryo culture duration, cryopreservation, and cause of infertility. Within-mother analyses, where each woman is her own control (i.e., sibling design), help disentangle treatment contributions from maternal confounders that are stable between pregnancies. We aimed to investigate the risk of placenta previa in pregnancies achieved after ART according to embryo culture duration, cryopreservation, and infertility factors while accounting for stable maternal factors using within-mother analyses.Methods and findingsWe used linked nationwide registry data from Denmark (1994 to 2014), Finland (1990 to 2014), Norway (1988 to 2015), and Sweden (1988 to 2015). All women who gave their first birth during the study period at age 20 years or older were eligible and contributed up to 4 deliveries (singleton or multifetal) occurring between 22 and 44 weeks of gestation, excluding deliveries where maternal age exceeded 45 years. We used multilevel logistic regression to compare risk of placenta previa after ART (n = 139,694 deliveries) versus natural conception (n = 5,614,512 deliveries), both at the population level and within mothers, adjusting for year of delivery, maternal age, parity, and country. We categorized ART according to culture duration, embryo cryopreservation, and infertility factors. Population level risk of placenta previa was higher for ART versus natural conception (odds ratio [OR], 4.16; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.96-4.37). Controlling for stable maternal factors, the association attenuated, but risk remained higher for ART versus natural conception (OR within mothers, 2.64; 95% CI, 2.31-3.02). Compared to naturally conceived, a larger difference in risk was seen for pregnancies from fresh embryos than for pregnancies from frozen embryos. Further categorization by culture duration showed the largest risk difference after fresh blastocyst transfer, and the smallest after frozen cleavage stage embryo transfer, which persisted in sensitivity analyses (including restriction to singletons). When stratified according to infertility factors at the population level, women with endometriosis conceiving by ART had the highest risk of placenta previa (OR, 9.35; 95% CI, 8.50-10.29), whereas women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) conceiving by ART had the lowest risk (OR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.12-2.09), compared to natural conception. Within mothers, we found a higher risk of placenta previa after ART compared to natural conception for women with endometriosis (OR, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.50-2.90), but not for women with PCOS (OR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.41-1.89 [unadjusted due to sparse data]). However, within-mother analyses are restricted to multiparous women with deliveries after different conception methods. Therefore, findings from these analyses might not generalize to all women undergoing ART.ConclusionsThe risk of placenta previa in pregnancies conceived by ART differed by embryo culture duration, cryopreservation, and underlying infertility. The highest risk was seen after fresh embryo transfer and especially fresh blastocyst transfer. Women with endometriosis had a higher risk than women with other infertility factors, and within mothers, their risk was higher after ART than after natural conception. Identifying the responsible mechanisms might provide opportunities for prevention.

BackgroundShared decision-making between clinicians and service users is crucial in mental health care. One significant barrier to achieving this goal is the lack of user-centered services. Integrating digital tools into mental health services holds promise for addressing some of these challenges. However, the implementation of digital tools, such as mobile apps, remains limited, and attrition rates for mental health apps are typically high. Design thinking can support the development of tools tailored to the needs of service users and clinicians. ObjectiveThis study aims to develop and beta test a digital tool designed for individuals with severe mental disorders or substance use disorders to facilitate shared decision-making on treatment goals and strategies within mental health services. MethodsWe used a user-centered design approach to develop iTandem, an app facilitating collaborative treatment between service users and clinicians. Through qualitative interviews and workshops, we engaged 6 service users with severe mental disorders or substance use disorders, 6 clinicians, and 1 relative to identify and design relevant app modules. A beta test of iTandem was conducted to refine the app and plan for a pilot trial in a clinical setting. After 6 weeks of app use, 5 clinicians and 4 service users were interviewed to provide feedback on the concept, implementation, and technical issues. Safety and ethical considerations were thoroughly discussed and addressed. ResultsTo avoid overload for the service users, we applied a pragmatic take on module content and size. Thus, iTandem includes the following 8 modules, primarily based on the needs of service users and clinicians: Sleep (sleep diary), Medication (intake and side effects), Recovery (measures, including well-being and personal recovery, and exercises, including good things and personal strengths), Mood (mood diary and report of daily feelings), Psychosis (level of positive symptoms and their consequences and level of negative symptoms), Activity (goal setting and progress), Substance use (weekly use, potential triggers or strategies used to abstain), and Feedback on therapy (of individual sessions and overall rating of the past week). For the beta testing, service users and clinicians collaborated in choosing 2-3 modules in iTandem to work with during treatment sessions. The testing showed that the app was well received by service users, and that facilitation for implementation is crucial. ConclusionsiTandem and similar apps have the potential to enhance treatment outcomes by facilitating shared decision-making and tailoring treatment to the needs of service users. However, successful implementation requires thorough testing, iterative development, and evaluations of both utility and treatment effects. There is a critical need to focus on how technology integrates into clinical settings—from development to implementation—and to conduct further research on early health technology assessments to guide these processes.

In industrial practice, no sensors capable of obtaining microstructural information in situ during thermo-mechanical processing of Al alloys are commonly employed. Inductive electrical conductivity measurement is safe, inexpensive, and capable of acquiring valuable information about precipitation and dissolution processes. However, commercial eddy current sensors work only at low temperatures near room temperature and are thus not suitable for in situ conductometry during heat treatments of Al alloys. We designed a high-temperature eddy current sensor and performed in situ conductometry during the homogenization of six Al-Mg-Si wrought alloys, three of which are experimental recycling-friendly alloys with increased Fe content. The results are interpreted with regard to microstructural investigations, and the advantages and limitations of our approach are discussed. As a proof-of-concept, we show how the conductivity curves and extrusion process parameters can be combined to predict final extrudate grain structures using machine learning. To achieve this, we employed finite element simulation of extrusion coupled with microstructural simulation over a wide parameter range, validated by extrusion experiments and metallography, and trained a feedforward neural network. We believe our interdisciplinary approach can lead to improvements in the industrial processing of Al wrought alloys.

Fully automatic cardiac segmentation can be a fast and reproducible method to extract clinical measurements from an echocardiography examination. The U-Net architecture is the current state-of-the-art deep learning architecture for medical segmentation and can segment cardiac structures in real-time with average errors comparable to inter-observer variability. However, this architecture still generates large outliers that are often anatomically incorrect. This work uses the concept of graph convolutional neural networks that predict the contour points of the structures of interest instead of labeling each pixel. We propose a graph architecture that uses two convolutional rings based on cardiac anatomy. While this architecture does not improve performance on classical measures like Dice score and Hausdorff distance, it does eliminate anatomical incorrect segmentations. Additionally, we propose to use the inter-model agreement of the U-Net and the graph network as a predictor of both the input and segmentation quality in real-time. The results show that from the 100 high agreement samples, 93 were in distribution, while from the 100 low agreement samples, only 7 were in distribution. Finally, this work contributes with an ablation study of the graph convolutional architecture on the publicly available CAMUS dataset and an evaluation of clinical measurements on the clinical HUNT4 dataset.
