Examined normative data for Missouri Children's Behavior Checklist (MCBC), Teacher Form. Sex differences comparable to those found in parents' ratings were found but teachers' average ratings were significantly lower than parents' ratings. Correlations between teachers' and parents' ratings were comparable to those found in literature and provide evidence for convergent and discriminant validity of the MCBC scales. (Author/NB)

The relation of Type A behavior to IQ, academic achievement, and several clinically relevant dimensions of behavior in children was assessed in 873 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders by means of the Matthews Youth Test for Health (MYTH), the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT), the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITED), and the teachers' form of the Missouri Children's Behavior Checklist (MCBC-T). The MYTH and its competitiveness and impatience-aggression subscales were found to be differentially related to academic achievement and to account for a small but significant portion of the variance in achievement not accounted for by IQ. The subscales of the MYTH were found to be highly correlated with several clinically familiar dimensions of children's behavior. The significance of these findings for the construct validity of the MYTH is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article assesses the comparability of several bipolar M-F scales and to determine the extent to which scores on these scales, singly and in combination, accounted for the variance in self-rated sexual orientation in a group of male and female college students. The study involved 182 undergraduate students from an introductory psychology course. Subjects in the study were given a battery of cognitive tests chosen from the kit of Reference tests provided by the Educational Testing Service on which sex differences were predicted.

This article presents information on Bern sex-Role Inventory (BSRI). The BSRI has been presented as an instrument that allows one to measure an aspect of sex roles that is not tapped by more tradi tional MF scales. This unique quality of the BSRI is said to be the result of three important features that distinguish it from other, commonly used MF scales. In most of the research that involves items that relate to sex roles, items have been chosen on the basis of their differential endorsement by males and females or on the basis of the fact that males and females earn significantly different scores on those items. The implication of using this method to select sex-role-related items is that the items so selected will be different items than would have been selected on the basis of their differential endorsement by males and females.

Scores on the MMPI MF scale and the WAIS M-F index were found not to be correlated highly with each other, but to be correlated significantly with self-rated sexual orientation in a mixed-sex group of Ss. Only when the implicit bipolarity of each of the test was taken into account were the scales significantly related to sexual orientation. The combination of the two M-F indices accounted for significantly more of the variance in sexual orientation than either scale alone. The article attempts to identify correlates of judgmental accuracy in a sample of clinicians. To test the hypothesis that personality attributes are related to judgmental accuracy, 25 clinicians completed the Terman Concept Mastery Test, Strong Vocational Interest Blank, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and a clinical experience questionnaire and rated two outpatients on 125 items that relate to prognosis, diagnosis and dynamics. Correlational analysis of the data indicated no consistent relationships between clinician attributes and judgmental accuracy scored with both actuarial and therapist criteria.

The article presents a study that compares the actuarial and clinical prediction methods in psychopathology. Several studies have been conducted in which actuarial and clinical predictions that have been made from objective and projective psychological test data and on the basis of a variety of clinically judged attributes and characteristics of patients. In 13 of the 14 studies, results revealed that the accuracy of the actuarial predictions was found to exceed or at least equal the accuracy of clinical predictions.
