Abstract

A numerical model for hydride embrittlement in Zirconium alloy (Zr–2.5Nb) is developed utilizing the extended finite element method (XFEM). Hydride embrittlement reduces the ductility and failure time of a metal/alloy. During hydride embrittlement, stress-directed hydrogen diffusion, metal-hydride phase transformation, mechanical deformation, and hydride precipitation occur simultaneously. The present model incorporates all these processes and is able to predict the hydrogen concentration and the hydride fraction distribution under any externally applied stress field. In this work, both the steady and transient hydrogen diffusion cases are evaluated. Further, the XFEM is utilized to develop a model of hydride embrittlement in the presence of a crack. The first step of the hydride embrittlement process is the diffusion of hydrogen. According to Fick's law of diffusion, hydrogen diffusion is directly dependent on hydrostatic stresses and hydrogen concentration gradient under external stresses. The next step is the hydride precipitation in hydride embrittlement, where the expansion of material takes place that changes the hydrostatic stress field. Thus, studying the effect of precipitation of hydride on hydrostatic stresses is essential. Moreover, the process of hydride embrittlement is highly influenced by residual stresses in the structure. Hence, the effect of residual stress present in the zirconium alloy pressure tube (PT) is also evaluated. Abstract

This article presents a nonlocal gradient-enhanced damage model that uses direction-dependent damage evolution and interfacial damage to predict transgranular and intergranular cracks in polycrystalline materials at the microstructural level. The distinct grains within the polycrystalline morphology are modeled as anisotropic linear elastic domains with random spatial orientation and cubic symmetries. Transgranular micro-cracks are assumed to occur along specific preferential cleavage planes within each randomly oriented crystal and are described using a bulk damage variable. For intergranular fracture, a smeared description of interface decohesion is incorporated through an interface damage variable which depends on the modified interface kinematics based on a cohesive law that uses a smoothed displacement jump approximation. The coupled system of equations in the proposed computational framework is decoupled using an operator-split methodology to ensure a robust and straightforward computational implementation. Abstract

The effect of particle volume fraction, size, and shape on the indentation behavior of particulate composites is investigated using coupled FE-EFG approach. A systematic approach is presented where the particles are modeled only in a small region under the indenter and the homogenized properties are assigned to the remaining region. Equivalent properties are determined using RVE analysis. Von-Mises criterion along-with updated Lagrangian approach is employed to capture elastoplastic large deformation behavior. Node-to-segment contact algorithm is adopted to model the contact behavior between indenter and matrix. Results in-terms of residual von-Mises stress, equivalent plastic strain, and deformed surface profile are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
