10. Three Dimensional Liquid Gated Graphene Field Effect Strain Sensor

Abstract

Realizing flexible strain sensor with high sensitivity and tunable gauge factor is a challenge. To meet this challenge, we report an ionic liquid gated three-dimensional graphene field effect strain sensor. The charge carrier concentration in this 3D graphene is modulated by applied electric field through an all-around self-assembled electrical double layer capacitance formed at the interface of graphene with ionic liquid. Strain causes folding and unfolding of microscopic wrinkles and formation of cracks in the graphene network altering transistor behavior. Mechanical deformation of graphene also alters its bandgap providing inherent strain sensitivity. Use of 3D network results in robust operation since there exists multiple paths for the charge carriers to flow between source and drain terminals. Interestingly, changing the applied bias allows one to tune the gauge factor of this graphene transistor based strain sensor. The current-voltage characteristics of the sensor were measured for different tensile strain values of 0.5% to 35%. Our results show that the sensor maintains its field effect characteristics over a large strain range; moreover it enables up to 68% tunability in the strain gauge factor. Abstract

It is imperative to develop high-efficiency polymer electrolytes to advance energy storage technologies. The goal of this research is to use the exceptional properties of ionic liquids such as their superior ionic conductivity, thermal stability, and adjustable physical and chemical characteristics to improve polymer electrolytes through doping. This study explores the incorporation of ionic liquids into polymer matrices to create novel ionic-liquid-doped polymer electrolytes (ILDPEs). We synthesized a ILDPEs using Poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) as the host polymer with salt sodium iodide (NaI) doped with a new ionic liquid (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide) synthesized using solution cast technique. Impedance spectroscopy revealed that doping ionic liquid enhances the ionic conductivity of the PEMA + NaI complex. Ionic conductivity significantly increased upon the addition of the ionic liquid (IL), reaching a maximum value of 7.7 × 10–4 S/cm at room temperature. The ionic transference number (tion) for the polymer electrolyte with the highest ionic conductivity was calculated using Wagner polarization method while electrochemical stability window was calculated by linear Sweep Voltammetry. The crystalline nature of the ILDPEs films was studied using Polarizing Optical Microscopy (POM). To confirm the complex formation and bonding structure, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were also employed. Finally, dye-synthesized solar cell (DSSC) and electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) were fabricated using the highest ionic conducting polymer electrolytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study provides a development of polymer electrolytes with an emphasis on their use in electrochemical devices. In present study we develop a new conducting carbon black (CB) powder dispersed into polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymer electrolyte using solution cast method. Various characterization techniques such as Impedance spectroscopy technique (EIS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Window stability (LSV) Linear sweep voltammetry has been studied in detail. The maximum ionic conductivity polymer electrolyte was at 0.05 wt%. of CB with σ value 1.20×10−5 S/cm. Finally the prepared CB dispersed polymer electrolyte using maximum conductivity sample is sandwiched between electrodes to fabricate an Electric double layer capacitor and Dye‐sensitized solar cell which show highest electrical capacity value of 68.5 F/gm at 5 mV/s respectively and 2.97 % efficiency shown by solar cell at 1 sun condition. Abstract

Ionogels, which are being considered as quasi-solid electrolytes for energy-storage devices, exhibited technical superiority in terms of nonflammability, negligible vapor pressure, remarkable thermostability, high ionic conductivity, and broad electrochemical stability window. However, their applications in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have been hindered by several issues: poor compatibility with Li-metal anodes and high-voltage cathodes, high viscosity, and inadequate wettability. Little attention has been paid to ionogel-based low-concentration electrolytes, despite their potential advantages in terms of Li+ mobility, viscosity, electrode wettability, and cost. Here, we demonstrate the surprising capabilities of localized high-concentration ionogel (LHCI) and dilutedly localized high-concentration ionogel (DLHCI) electrolytes, utilizing the non-solvating fluorinated ether 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, to realize high-voltage quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries (QSLMBs). Notably, the DLHCI electrolyte not only delivers superior ionic conductivity of 3.93 × 10−3 S cm−1 but also provides a high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99%. Moreover, it significantly enhances anodic stability when paired with 4.4 V LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) and 4.8 V LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO).
