3. An optimal scheduling architecture for accelerating batch algorithms on Neural Network processor architectures

Abstract

In neural network topologies, algorithms are running on batches of data tensors. The batches of data are typically scheduled onto the computing cores which execute in parallel. For the algorithms running on batches of data, an optimal batch scheduling architecture is very much needed by suitably utilizing hardware resources - thereby resulting in significant reduction training and inference time. In this paper, we propose to accelerate the batch algorithms for neural networks through a scheduling architecture enabling optimal compute power utilization. The proposed optimal scheduling architecture can be built into HW or can be implemented in SW alone which can be leveraged for accelerating batch algorithms. The results demonstrate that the proposed architecture speeds up the batch algorithms compared to the previous solutions. 6. Uncovering Droop Control Laws Embedded Within the Nonlinear Dynamics of Van der Pol Oscillators

Abstract

This paper examines the dynamics of power-electronic inverters in islanded microgrids that are controlled to emulate the dynamics of Van der Pol oscillators. The general strategy of controlling inverters to emulate the behavior of nonlinear oscillators presents a compelling time-domain alternative to ubiquitous droop control methods which presume the existence of a quasi-stationary sinusoidal steady state and operate on phasor quantities. We present two main results in this work. First, by leveraging the method of periodic averaging, we demonstrate that droop laws are intrinsically embedded within a slower time scale in the nonlinear dynamics of Van der Pol oscillators. Second, we establish the global convergence of amplitude and phase dynamics in a resistive network interconnecting inverters controlled as Van der Pol oscillators. Furthermore, under a set of non-restrictive decoupling approximations, we derive sufficient conditions for local exponential stability of desirable equilibria of the linearized amplitude and phase dynamics.

17. Development and characterization of large-scale simple sequence repeats in jute

Abstract

Jute is an important crop of the Indian subcontinent and comprises tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius) and white jute (C. capsularis). The yield and fiber quality of this crop remained stagnant for many years and could not be improved through conventional plant breeding. Also, no effort has been made to develop molecular markers on a scale required for marker-assisted selection (MAS) to supplement conventional plant breeding. As a first step toward deploying MAS for jute improvement, 2469 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were developed in tossa jute (JRO 524) using four SSR-enriched genomic libraries. A random subset of 100 SSRs (25 SSRs from each library) was used to detect polymorphism between the parental genotypes of each of the two recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping populations. The RILs are being developed from JRO 524 x PPO4 (for fiber fineness) and JRC 321 x CMU 010 (for lignin content) crosses to prepare molecular maps and conduct quantitative trait loci (QTL) analyses. Both SSR length polymorphism and [+ or -] polymorphism (null alleles, i.e., presence and absence of specific SSR) were detected; 50 SSRs detected polymorphism between the two genotypes of tossa jute, whereas 45 SSRs detected polymorphism between the two genotypes of white jute. This SSR allelic polymorphism in jute is higher than that reported in other crops and is adequate for construction of genetic maps for QTL analysis. The large-scale SSRs will also prove useful in studying genetic diversity, population structure, and association mapping.

Abstract

Foreign bodies in the nasal cavity are commonly encountered as a cause of epistaxis; especially in children. Leeches are most common parasite found in hilly areas in India, particularly in rainy season. However, nasal leech infestation (animate foreign body) as a cause of unilateral persistent epistaxis is very rare. We, herein present a case of nasal hirudiniasis in a 30 year old female. She presented with history of recurrent epistaxis with moving sensation and itching in the left nose. Examination of nose showed a moving fleshy mass, which was a leech and was removed with a Luc’s forceps In developing countries, leech infestation as a cause of epistaxis should be suspected in patients with lower socioeconomic status or in those living in leech predominant areas, rural areas who give history of drinking polluted water from, or bathing in, stagnant ponds and puddles.

41. A simple ethanol wash of the tissue homogenates recovers high-quality genomic DNA from Corchorus species characterized by highly acidic and proteinaceous mucilages

Abstract

A simple miniprep based on early elimination of highly acidic and proteinaceous mucilages through ethanol washing of the tissue homogenates has been developed for the extraction of genomic DNA from mature leaves and seeds of Corchorus spp. As compared to high cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-NaCl DNA extraction followed by ethanol-based removal of remnant mucilages from the DNA pellet, this simple miniprep consistently and reproducibly recovers high amounts of DNA with good spectral qualities at A260/A280 and A260/A230. The purified DNA is efficiently digested by restriction endonucleases, and is suitable for PCR amplification of nuclear microsatellites with expected allele sizes.
