This paper presents the High-Performance computing efforts with FPGA for the accelerated pulsar/transient search for the SKA. Case studies are presented from within SKA and pathfinder telescopes highlighting future opportunities. It reviews the scenario that has shifted from offline processing of the radio telescope data to digitizing several hundreds/thousands of antenna outputs over huge bandwidths, forming several 100s of beams, and processing the data in the SKA real-time pulsar search pipelines. A brief account of the different architectures of the accelerators, primarily the new generation Field Programmable Gate Array-based accelerators, showing their critical roles to achieve high-performance computing and in handling the enormous data volume problems of the SKA is presented here. We report measurement of reactor based electron anti-neutrinos from a prototype array of plastic scintillator bars ( mini-ISMRAN ) located inside Dhruva research reactor hall, BARC. The detector setup took data for 128 days for reactor on (RON) and 51 days for reactor off (ROFF) condition. A detailed analysis procedure is developed to select the anti-neutrino candidate events based on the energy deposition, number of bars hit as well as topological event selection criteria in position and time. Each of these selection criteria are compared with Monte Carlo based simulations and further an embedding technique is used to estimate the efficiencies from a data driven background study. The obtained anti-neutrino like events in RON condition are 218 $\pm$ 50 (stat) $\pm$ 37 (sys) after background subtraction. The obtained results are compared with theoretical estimation which yields 214 $\pm$ 32 (sys) anti-neutrino events for the RON condition., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures

We report the synthesis of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ thin films on NdCaAlO$_{4}$ (110), LaAlO$_3$ (100) and LaSrAlO$_4$ (001) substrates and show that epitaxial strain induces a transition from the Mott-insulating phase of bulk Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ into a metallic phase. Magnetometry and spin-polarized neutron reflectometry reveal a low-temperature, small-moment ferromagnetic state in metallic Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ films.

The nanometer scale lattice deformation brought about by the dopants in high temperature superconducting cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$(x=0.08) was investigated by measuring the associated X-ray diffuse scattering around multiple Bragg peaks. A characteristic diffuse scattering pattern was observed, which can be well described by continuum elastic theory. With the fitted dipole force parameters, the acoustic type lattice deformation pattern was re-constructed and found to be of similar size to lattice thermal vibration at 7 K. Our results address the long-term concern of dopant introduced local lattice inhomogeneity, and show that the associated nanometer scale lattice deformation is marginal and cannot, alone, be responsible for the patched variation in the spectral gaps observed with scanning tunneling microscopy in the cuprates., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted by PRL

The interesting physics and potential memory technologies resulting from topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions, has prompted efforts to discover new material systems that can host these kind of magnetic structures. Here we use the highly tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd multilayer films to explore the magnetic properties that lead to dipole-stabilized skyrmions and skyrmion lattices that form from the competition of dipolar field and exchange energy. Using both real space imaging and reciprocal space scattering techniques we determined the range of material properties and magnetic fields where skyrmions form. Micromagnetic modeling closely matches our observation of small skyrmion features (~50 to 70nm) and suggests these class of skyrmions have a rich domain structure that is Bloch like in the center of the film and more N\'eel like towards each surface. Our results provide a pathway to engineer the formation and controllability of dipole skyrmion phases in a thin film geometry at different temperatures and magnetic fields., Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures

We show that properly engineered amorphous Fe-Gd alloy thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy exhibit room-temperature skyrmion molecules, or a pair of like-polarity, opposite-helicity skyrmions. Magnetic mirror symmetry planes present in the stripe phase, instead of chiral exchange, determine the internal skyrmion structure and the net achirality of the skyrmion phase. Our study shows that stripe domain engineering in amorphous alloy thin films may enable the creation of skyrmion phases with technologically desirable properties., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. We have measured resonant soft x-ray diffuse magnetic scattering as a function of temperature in a positively exchange biased Co/FeF2 bilayer and analyzed the data in the distorted wave Born approximation to obtain in-plane charge and magnetic correlation lengths associated with the Co and FeF2 layers and estimate interfacial roughness. Tuning to the Fe and Co L3 edges reveals significantly different temperature trends in these quantities in the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layers, respectively. While the magnetic correlation length of the uncompensated interfacial spins in FeF2 layer increase as temperature decreases, these quantities remain unchanged in the Co layer. Our results indicate that uncompensated Fe spins order within a range of few hundred nanometers in otherwise randomly distributed uncompensated magnetic moments, giving rise to spin clusters in the antiferromagnet whose size increase as the temperature decrease., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Using X- ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurements on gold nanoparticles embedded in polymethylmethacrylate we provide evidence for existence of an intrinsic length scale for dynamic heterogeneity in polymer nanocomposites similar to that in other soft materials.We also show how the dynamics varies in a complex way with various parameters., Comment: 7pages,4figures

Recent theoretical and experimental work on solid He-4 has focused on vacancies, or other lattice defects and whether these can form a Bose-Einstein condensate within the solid. The earliest suggestion that this could happen was based on the conjecture that the ground state of the solid at T = 0 K would include vacancies. Although no direct evidence for zero point vacancies has been presented, a variety of experimental observations have been interpreted as being due to thermally activated vacancies. Here we directly probe the excitation spectrum of hcp solid He-4 using inelastic neutron scattering. We identify a branch of delocalized excitations, with both longitudinal and transverse dispersion that coexist with acoustic phonons. While the energy gap is larger and the characteristic wavevector is shifted to coincide with the position of the (100) Bragg peak, the longitudinal effective mass of this mode is within 15% of that for rotons in superfluid He-4. The dispersion relation intersects the longitudinal acoustic phonon half way to the zone boundary, and this distinguishes the mode from a conventional optic phonon. Our results provide direct evidence for coherent delocalized non-phonon excitations in solid helium, which we identify as delocalized vacancy modes., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

The mean square atomic displacement in hcp-phase solid He-4 has been measured in crystals with a molar volume of 21.3 cm^3. It is temperature independent from 1 K to 140 mK, with no evidence for an anomaly in the vicinity of the proposed supersolid transition. The mean square displacement is different for in-plane motions (0.122 +/- 0.001 A^(2)) and out-of-plane motions (0.150 +/- 0.001 A ^(2))., Comment: 4 figures, 4 tables. X-ray scattering measurements on optimally-doped single crystal samples of the high temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ reveal the presence of three distinct incommensurate charge modulations, each involving a roughly fivefold increase in the unit cell dimension along the {\bf b}-direction. The strongest scattering comes from the well known (H, K$\pm$ 0.21, L) modulation and its harmonics. However, we also observe broad diffraction which peak up at the L values complementary to those which characterize the known modulated structure. These diffraction features correspond to correlation lengths of roughly a unit cell dimension, $\xi_c$$\sim$20 $\AA$ in the {\bf c} direction, and of $\xi_b$$\sim$ 185 $\AA$ parallel to the incommensurate wavevector. We interpret these features as arising from three dimensional incommensurate domains and the interfaces between them, respectively. In addition we investigate the recently discovered incommensuate modulations which peak up at (1/2, K$\pm$ 0.21, L) and related wavevectors. Here we explicitly study the L-dependence of this scattering and see that these charge modulations are two dimensional in nature with weak correlations on the scale of a bilayer thickness, and that they correspond to short range, isotropic correlation lengths within the basal plane. We relate these new incommensurate modulations to the electronic nanostructure observed in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ using STM topography., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Using high-energy diffraction we show that a 4-unit-cell superstructure, q0=(1/4,0,0), along the shorter Cu-Cu bonds coexists with superconductivity in optimally doped YBCO. A complex set of anisotropic atomic displacements on neighboring CuO chain planes, BaO planes, and CuO2 planes, respectively, correlated over ~3-6 unit cells gives rise to diffuse superlattice peaks. A simple scheme to extract the magnetization reversals of characteristic magnetic domains on nanofabricated periodic arrays from soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (SXRMS) data is presented. The SXRMS peak intensities from a permalloy square ring array were measured with field cycling using circularly polarized soft x-rays at the Ni L$_3$ absorption edge. Various SXRMS hysteresis loops observed at different diffraction orders enabled the determination of the magnetization reversal of each magnetic domain using a simple linear algebra. The extracted domain-specific hysteresis loops reveal that the magnetization of the domain parallel to the field is strongly pinned, while that of the perpendicular domain rotates continuously., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
