Abstract Background Currently, few literature reports document cases of decoy cells in the urine of umbilical cord blood transplant patients. The majority of the literature indicates that decoy cells are frequently identified in the urine of kidney transplant recipients. Case presentation This case report describes a patient with Myelodysplastic Neoplasms featuring a complex karyotype who underwent umbilical cord blood transplantation. Postoperative urinary cytology revealed decoy cells, and subsequent BK virus nucleic acid testing was positive. However, the routine use of antiviral drugs by the physicians led to insufficient attention to the decoy cells and BK virus, culminating in hemorrhagic cystitis. Conclusions Urine cytology is a simple, intuitive, rapid, and cost-effective analytical method. The presence of decoy cells in the urine can serve as an indicator for infection screening and provide a clue for clinical doctors: Detection of decoy cells in urine should prompt a more vigorous antiviral response to mitigate the risk of complications like hemorrhagic cystitis.

Abstract Few aerobic hyperthermophilic microorganisms degrade polysaccharides. Here, we describe the genome-enabled enrichment and optical tweezer-based isolation of an aerobic polysaccharide-degrading hyperthermophile, Fervidibacter sacchari, previously ascribed to candidate phylum Fervidibacteria. F. sacchari uses polysaccharides and monosaccharides for growth at 65–87.5 °C and expresses 191 carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) according to RNA-Seq and proteomics, including 31 with unusual glycoside hydrolase domains (GH109, GH177, GH179). Fluorescence in-situ hybridization and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed rapid assimilation of 13C-starch in spring sediments. Purified GHs were optimally active at 80–100 °C on ten different polysaccharides. Finally, we propose reassigning Fervidibacteria as a class within phylum Armatimonadota, along with 18 other species, and show that a high number and diversity of CAZymes is a hallmark of the phylum, in both aerobic and anaerobic lineages. Our study establishes Fervidibacteria as hyperthermophilic polysaccharide degraders in terrestrial geothermal springs and suggests a broad role for Armatimonadota in polysaccharide catabolism.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used as important energy storage and energy supply devices. The porous design and heteroatomization modification of carbon-based anode materials are crucial for achieving high-capacity and reversible energy storage in LIBs. Sol-gel method and pyrolysis treatment were used to obtain silica/silver composite particles used as templates. Polyphosphazene-coated silica/silver composite composite carbon materials (SiO2/Ag@PZS-C) were synthesized through in-situ self-assembly and carbonization of polyphosphazene. The electrochemical behavior and lithium storage mechanism of SiO2/Ag@PZS-C was also studied. The results reveal that the composite exhibited high specific capacity, stable cycling and superior rate performance. The double modification of silver nanoparticles and polyphosphazene carbon significantly improves the conductivity of silica and reduces the volume change. Moreover, the carbon shell of polyphosphazene facilitated the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface film (SEI), preventing direct contact between the active material and the electrolyte, thereby substantially enhancing lithium storage performance.

Empowering leadership has been widely recognized as an effective approach to enhancing new product development performance in Western countries. However, it was not so prevalent in Chinese R&D team management. This study reported here examined the relationship between empowering leadership and new product development performance (i.e., new product creativity, and new product development speed) by focusing on the mediating effect of job autonomy, direct and moderating effects of error aversion culture to find out the reasons. Data collected from a two-wave survey involving 107 superiors and 387 subordinates in 107 R&D teams in China was used to conduct analysis of hierarchical multiple regression. The results revealed two key findings. Firstly, empowering leadership was found to have no significant association with new product development speed which was the primary performance target for Chinese R&D teams. Secondly, while empowering leadership was positively associated with new product creativity when mediated by job autonomy, the widespread presence of an error aversion culture in China significantly reduced job autonomy within R&D teams and negatively moderated the relationship between empowering leadership and job autonomy. Consequently, empowering leadership had no impact on new product creativity when error aversion culture was high. The implications of these findings were discussed in the context of Chinese R&D teams, aiming to highlight potential avenues for improving new product development performance through leadership interventions.

Realizing high average power nanosecond pulsed single longitudinal mode laser sources around 1.6 μm are of intense interest for applications as diverse as range finding, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. Herein, we first demonstrate a high average power and high beam quality nanosecond pulsed eye-safe diamond Raman laser at 1634 nm, which is intracavity driven by an acousto-optic Q-switched two-crystal Nd:YVO4 laser at 1342 nm. By exploiting the subtly designed dynamically stable resonator and the thoroughly optimized acousto-optic modulator, excellent beam quality and substantial power improvement have been confirmed. Under the incident pump power of 60.9 W, the highest multimode average output power of 6.92 W has been achieved with the repetition rate of 25 kHz and the duty cycle of 8%, corresponding to the pulse duration of 8.8 ns and the peak power of 31.5 kW. Subsequently, by inserting a fused silica etalon in the high-Q fundamental cavity, the average output power for single longitudinal mode operation has been creeping up to 2.56 W with the aid of the high precision temperature controlling and the enlarged beam diameter on diamond, where the pulse duration and the spectral linewidth are 8 ns and 180 MHz, respectively. The beam quality is maintained with M2 < 1.3 across the entire output power range.

Hepatotoxicity is an significant side effect of doxorubicin (DOX), while astaxanthin (ASX) has the anti-liver injury biological functions. In this study, we utilized in vivo and in vitro methods to investigate the protective effect of ASX against DOX-induced hepatotoxicity and elucidate its potential mechanism. Our researchers measured liver injury indicators and the expression of ferroptosis-related protein (transferrin receptor 1 (TFRC), ferroportin 1 (FPN1), ferritin light chain (FTL), ferritin heavy chain-1 (FTH1), glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), and solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11)) in rats and HepG2 cells. We found that ASX could effectively reduce ferroptosis level and relieve a range of DOX-caused manifestations of liver injury, including inflammation and oxidative damage. ASX may play the same role as ferroptosis inhibitor, Fer-1 and DFP, in this process. The findings demonstrated that the intervention with ASX ameliorated the DOX-induced liver injury by mitigating the DOX-induced ferroptosis through inhibiting iron accumulation.

Background: The effect of dietary antioxidant capacity on health has attracted increasing attention, but unequivocal evidence for its benefits on cardiovascular diseases is still lacking. Objectives: Our aim was to assess the association between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and Life’s Essential 8 (LE8), an evaluation indicator of cardiovascular health (CVH), in two large cohorts. Methods: The cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2018 and Community Cohort Study on Specialized Nervous System Diseases (CCSNSD) 2018. The relationship between CDAI and CVH was studied by multinomial logistic regression, restricted cubic spline, subgroup and sensitivity analysis. Results: After adjusting for all potential confounding factors, it suggested that higher CDAI was positively associated with higher CVH (NHANES: OR Q4 vs. Q1 = 0.19, 95 % CI: 0.14–0.25; CCSNSD: OR Q4 vs. Q1 = 0.03, 95 % CI: 0.03–0.04). And a nonlinear dose–response relationship between CDAI and CVH was observed in two large cohorts. The robustness of the results was further demonstrated by sensitivity analysis. Among them, Mendelian randomization analysis showed that higher Vitamin C and Vitamin E intakes were causally associated with a lower risk of CVD. Moreover, there was a stronger positive correlation between the CDAI and CVH among individuals with lower socioeconomic status in both cohorts. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated the potential benefit of dietary antioxidant intake in improving CVH. Besides, the relationship between CDAI and CVH may be influenced by income levels, highlighting the need for targeted interventions in populations with low income to increase CVH levels.

Accurate identification of influential nodes in complex networks is crucial for network management and network security.The local centrality method is concise and easy to use, but ignores the topological relationship between neighboring nodes and cannot provide globally optimal results.A node importance assessment method was proposed to correlate the node edge relationship and topology, which firstly applied the H-index and information entropy to assess the nodes, then combined the structural holes of the nodes with the structural characteristics of the nodes, and took into account the attribute of “bridging” while focusing on the node’s own quality and the amount of information about the neighboring nodes.The algorithm was validated by simulating the propagation process using the SIR model, and the Kendall correlation coefficient, complementary cumulative distribution function and propagation influence were applied to validate the validity and applicability of the method.Comparison of the experimental results on six real network datasets shows that the proposed method is more accurate than the traditional centrality methods in identifying and ordering the key nodes in the network.

Abstract The vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV, 10–200 nm) imaging photodetector (PD) based on the wide bandgap semiconductor (WBGS) can realize a more detailed observation of solar storms than the silicon ones. Here, an 8 × 8 VUV PD array based on the semiconductor AlN with an ultra-wide bandgap is presented, exhibiting the shortest cutoff wavelength (203 nm) reported so far. The PD array with a Pt/AlN/SiC/Ti/Au photovoltaic structure shows an excellent selective response to VUV light, an extremely low dark current density of 2.85 × 10–11 A·cm−2@ -2 V, a responsivity of 0.054 A·W−1@ 0 V and an ultra-short rise time of 13 ns. Also, the clear boundaries and an obvious contrast between light and dark of the VUV image displayed in the imaging measurement indicate the good imaging ability of this PD array, which can be used for the imaging application with high signal-to-noise ratio and high response speed. These results provide rich experience for the development of VUV imaging PDs based on WBGSs both in their fabrication and the practical applications in VUV detection.

Excessive fluoride intake from residential environments may affect multiple tissues and organs; however, the specific pathogenic mechanisms are unclear. Researchers have recently focused on the damaging effects of fluoride on the immune system. Damage to immune function seriously affects the quality of life of fluoride-exposed populations and increases the incidence of infections and malignant tumors. Probing the mechanism of damage to immune function caused by fluoride helps identify effective drugs and methods to prevent and treat fluorosis and improve people’s living standards in fluorosis-affected areas. Here, the recent literature on the effects of fluoride on the immune system is reviewed, and research on fluoride damage to the immune system is summarized in terms of three perspectives: immune organs, immune cells, and immune-active substances. We reviewed that excessive fluoride can damage immune organs, lead to immune cells dysfunction and interfere with the expression of immune-active substances. This review aimed to provide a potential direction for future fluorosis research from the perspective of fluoride-induced immune function impairment. In order to seek the key regulatory indicators of fluoride on immune homeostasis in the future.

Rabi oscillations express a phenomenon of periodic conversion between two wave states in a coupled system. The finding of Rabi oscillation has led to important applications in many different disciplines. Despite great progress, it is still unknown whether the Rabi oscillating state can be excited in the framework of the higher-order vector vortex regime. Here, we demonstrate in theory that the higher-order vector vortex light beams can be Rabi oscillating during evolution in an optical coupling system. This new classical oscillating state of light is characterized by a topologically shaped wavefront and coupled with spatially varying polarization. The vector vortex state exhibits a harmonic oscillatory property in the resonant and nonresonant conditions but differs greatly in Rabi oscillating frequencies. During Rabi oscillation, the complex state maintains its topology and intensity profile, while its intrinsic polarization pattern varies adiabatically in a periodic manner. We present an interpretation of the Rabi oscillation of the higher-order wave states in terms of the coupled-mode theory. Furthermore, we reveal a symmetry-protected transition between two Rabi oscillating modes, driven by a slowly varying phase mismatch. This Rabi transition has not been reported in either quantum mechanics or any other physical setting. This work advances the research of Rabi oscillation into the higher-order regime, and it may lead to novel applications in classical and quantum optics.

Abstract Background Long-term exposure of humans to air pollution is associated with an increasing risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Astaxanthin (AST), a naturally occurring red carotenoid pigment, was proved to have multiple health benefits. However, whether or not AST also exerts a protective effect on fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced cardiomyocyte damage and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Methods In vitro experiments, the H9C2 cells were subjected to pretreatment with varying concentrations of AST, and then cardiomyocyte injury model induced by PM2.5 was established. The cell viability and the ferroptosis-related proteins expression were measured in different groups. In vivo experiments, the rats were pretreated with different concentrations of AST for 21 days. Subsequently, a rat model of myocardial PM2.5 injury was established by intratracheal instillation every other day for 1 week. The effects of AST on myocardial tissue injury caused by PM2.5 indicating by histological, serum, and protein analyses were examined. Results AST significantly ameliorated PM2.5-induced myocardial tissue injury, inflammatory cell infiltration, the release of inflammatory factors, and cardiomyocyte H9C2 cell damage. Mechanistically, AST pretreatment increased the expression of SLC7A11, GPX4 and down-regulated the expression of TfR1, FTL and FTH1 in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions Our study suggest that ferroptosis plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of cardiomyocyte injury induced by PM2.5. AST may serve as a potential therapeutic agent for mitigating cardiomyocyte injury caused by PM2.5 through the inhibition of ferroptosis.

Photocured resin materials are widely used in various fields, such as 3D printing, medical applications, and dentistry. However, the strength, wear resistance, and antibacterial properties of photocured resin are relatively limited, rendering it susceptible to potential failures. In this recent study, photocured composite resins incorporating titanium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ti-HAp) were fabricated to investigate their mechanical and biological properties. It was found that the hardness and wear resistance increased with the addition of an appropriate amount of hydroxyapatite (HAp). Specifically, the 6wt%HAp resin demonstrated superior hardness. Compared with the 6wt%HAp resin, the acid resistance and wear resistance improved when an appropriate amount of Ti-HAp was added. Notably, the resin containing 0.56%Ti-HAp demonstrated superior wear resistance. Additionally, the antibacterial performance improved with higher titanium (Ti) content, showcasing a 71.9% improvement in the resin containing 1.37%Ti-HAp compared with the 6wt%HAp resin, alongside commendable remineralization capabilities. In summary, the Ti-HAp composite resin showed enhanced mechanical and biological properties, meeting clinical standards in terms of mechanical and antibacterial properties.

Abstract Identifying influential spreaders in complex networks is a widely discussed topic in the field of network science. Numerous methods have been proposed to rank key nodes in the network, and while gravity-based models often perform well, most existing gravity-based methods either rely on node degree, k-shell values, or a combination of both to differentiate node importance without considering the overall impact of neighboring nodes. Relying solely on a node's individual characteristics to identify influential spreaders has proven to be insufficient. To address this issue, we propose a new gravity centrality method called HVGC, based on the H-index. Our approach considers the impact of neighboring nodes, path information between nodes, and the positional information of nodes within the network. Additionally, it is better able to identify nodes with smaller k-shell values that act as bridges between different parts of the network, making it a more reasonable measure compared to previous gravity centrality methods. We conducted several experiments on 10 real networks and observed that our method outperformed previously proposed methods in evaluating the importance of nodes in complex networks.

BackgroundTelomere length is closely linked to the aging phenotype, where cellular aging results in the production of a cascade of cell factors and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), leading to an inflammatory response. The presence of inflammation plays a crucial role in the formation of intracranial aneurysms. Nevertheless, the relationship between telomere length and intracranial aneurysms remains unclear. This study aims to explore the causal connection between telomere length and intracranial aneurysms through the utilization of Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.MethodsData on telomere length were obtained from the genome-wide association studies conducted on the UK Biobank, comprising a total of 472,174 participants. Data on intracranial aneurysms were obtained from the summary dataset of the Global Genome-wide Association Study (GWAS) conducted by the International Stroke Genetics Consortium. The dataset consisted of 7,495 cases and 71,934 controls, all of European descent. Initially, the linkage disequilibrium score was used to investigate the connection between telomere length and intracranial aneurysms. Subsequently, a bidirectional MR was conducted using two-sample analysis to assess whether there is a causal connection between telomere length and intracranial aneurysm risk. The results were analyzed utilizing five MR methods, with the inverse variance weighted method serving as the main methodology. In addition, we did various analyses to evaluate the presence of heterogeneity, pleiotropy, and sensitivity in the study results. A reverse MR analysis was conducted to investigate potential reverse causal links.ResultsIn the forward MR analysis, it was observed that both the inverse variance-weighted and weighted median analyses implied a potential causal relationship between longer telomere length and a decreased incidence of intracranial aneurysms (IVW: OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.47–0.92, p = 1.49 × 10−2). There was no heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy. The findings were verified to be robust through the utilization of leave-one-out analysis. The use of reverse MR analysis did not establish a potential causal link between the occurrence of intracranial aneurysms and telomere length.ConclusionThere may exist a potential correlation between longer telomere length and a decreased likelihood of intracranial aneurysms within the European population. The present study offers novel insights into the correlation between telomere length and intracranial aneurysms. Additional research is required to clarify the underlying mechanisms and validate our discoveries in diverse populations.

Low expression levels of breast cancer metastasis suppressor 1 like (BRMS1L) have been associated with the growth of cancer cells. However, the mechanisms underlying the role of BRMS1L as an antitumour transcription factor in the progression of NSCLC have not been explored. Herein, we reveal that BRMS1L plays a key role as a tumour suppressor in inhibiting NSCLC proliferation and metastasis. Mechanistically, BRMS1L overexpression results in the downregulation of glutathione peroxidase 2 (GPX2) expression and consequently causes abnormal glutathione metabolism and increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, inducing oxidative stress injury and apoptosis. Furthermore, overexpression of GPX2 enhances the growth advantage and oxidative stress repair conferred by knockdown of BRMS1L. Importantly, we show that low expression of BRMS1L in NSCLC cells causes relatively high levels of antioxidant accumulation to maintain cell redox balance and renders cancer cells more sensitive to treatment with piperlongumine as an ROS inducer both in vitro and in vivo. These findings offer new insights into the role of BRMS1L as a transcriptional repressor in NSCLC and suggest that the BRMS1L expression level may be a potential biomarker for predicting the therapeutic response to small molecule ROS inducers, providing new ideas for targeted therapy.

ABSTRACTSpecies of the phylum Actinobacteria have long time been thought mostly non-motile and non-flagellated, in spite of their extraordinary diversity in morphology, physiology, and ecology. It remains unclear how very few actinobacterial species acquired their flagellar genes and the role of flagellar motility in the evolution of different lineages within this large phylum. Here, we performed a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of flagellar components in all actinobacterial species, including the deepest branches of this phylum identified recently. Our results provide robust evidence that all actinobacterial flagella shared a common origin and likely evolved from their last common flagellated ancestor by vertical inheritance. Later lineages underwent massive flagellar losses with the ecological switch from aquatic to terrestrial land or host-associated environments. In addition, the actinobacterial flagella also showed degenerative evolution in terms of their composition, leading to the simplest rod known so far. Furthermore, these evolutionary changes of flagella were accompanied by noteworthy variations in the chemosensory system and c-di-GMP mediated signaling network. Overall, we present here a detailed picture of flagellar evolution in Actinobacteria, which provides new insights into the evolution of major actinobacterial lineages and previously unobserved links between flagella and other biological features. The simplest flagellar rod as a product of degenerative evolution could possibly serve as a model for future nanomachine reconstruction in synthetic biology.IMPORTANCEFlagellar motility plays an important role in the environmental adaptation of bacteria and is found in more than 50% of known bacterial species. However, this important characteristic is sparsely distributed within members of the phylum Actinobacteria, which constitutes one of the largest bacterial groups. It is unclear why this important fitness organelle is absent in most actinobacterial species and the origin of flagellar genes in other species. Here, we present detailed analyses of the evolution of flagellar genes in Actinobacteria, in conjunction with the ecological distribution and cell biological features of major actinobacterial lineages, and the co-evolution of signal transduction systems. The results presented in addition to clarifying the puzzle of sporadic distribution of flagellar motility in Actinobacteria, also provide important insights into the evolution of major lineages within this phylum.

Mining gene expression data is valuable for discovering novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although emerging data mining tools are available for pan-cancer–related gene data analysis, few tools are dedicated to HCC. Moreover, tools specifically designed for HCC have restrictions such as small data scale and limited functionality. Therefore, we developed IHGA, a new interactive web server for discovering genes of interest in HCC on a large-scale and comprehensive basis. Integrative HCC Gene Analysis (IHGA) contains over 100 independent HCC patient-derived datasets (with over 10,000 tissue samples) and more than 90 cell models. IHGA allows users to conduct a series of large-scale and comprehensive analyses and data visualizations based on gene mRNA levels, including expression comparison, correlation analysis, clinical characteristics analysis, survival analysis, immune system interaction analysis, and drug sensitivity analysis. This method notably enhanced the richness of clinical data in IHGA. Additionally, IHGA integrates artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted gene screening based on natural language models. IHGA is free, user-friendly, and can effectively reduce time spent during data collection, organization, and analysis. In conclusion, IHGA is competitive in terms of data scale, data diversity, and functionality. It effectively alleviates the obstacles caused by HCC heterogeneity to data mining work and helps advance research on the molecular mechanisms of HCC.

Adaptation to various stresses during infection is important for Salmonella Typhimurium virulence, while the fitness determinants under infection-relevant stress conditions remain unknown. Here, we simulated conditions Salmonella encountered within the host or in the environment by 15 individual stresses as well as two model cell lines (epithelium and macrophage) to decipher the genes and pathways required for fitness. By high-resolution Tn-seq analysis, a total of 1242 genes were identified as essential for fitness under at least one stress condition. The comparative analysis of fitness determinants in 17 stress conditions indicated the essentiality of genes varied in different mimicking host niches. A total of 12 genes were identified as fitness determinants in all stress conditions, including recB, recC, and xseA (encode three exonuclease subunits necessary for DNA recombination repair) and a novel essential fitness gene yheM. YheM is a putative sulfurtransferase subunit that is responsible for tRNA modification, and our results showed that Salmonella lacking yheM accumulated more aggregates of endogenous protein than wild-type. Moreover, we established a scoring scheme for sRNA essentiality analysis and found STnc2080 of unknown function was essential for resistance to LL-37. In summary, we systematically dissected Salmonella gene essentiality profiling and demonstrated the general and specific adaptive requirements in infection-relevant niches. Our data not only provide valuable insights on how Salmonella responds to environmental stresses during infections but also highlight the potential clinical application of fitness determinants in vaccine development.

Abstract Surface engineering is effective for developing materials with novel properties, multifunctionality, and smart features that can enable their use in emerging applications. However, surface engineering of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to add color properties and functionalities has not been well established. Herein, a new surface engineering strategy is developed to achieve rainbow‐colored CNTs with high chroma, high brightness, and strong color travel for visual hydrogen sensing. This approach involved constructing a bilayer structure of W and WO3 on CNTs (CNT/W/WO3) and a trilayer structure of W, WO3, and Pd on CNTs (CNT/W/WO3/Pd) with tunable thicknesses. The resulting CNT/W/WO3 composite film exhibits a wide range of visible colors, including yellow, orange, magenta, violet, blue, cyan, and green, owing to strong thin‐film interference. This coloring method outperforms other structural coloring methods in both brightness and chroma. The smart CNT/W/WO3/Pd films with porous characteristics quickly and precisely detect the hydrogen leakage site. Furthermore, the smart CNT/W/WO3/Pd films allow a concentration as low as 0.6% H2/air to be detected by the naked eye in 58 s, offering a very practical and safe approach for the detection and localization of leaks in onboard hydrogen tanks.

Phosphoglycerate kinase 1 (PGK1) serves as a pivotal enzyme in the cellular glycolysis pathway, facilitating adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) production in tumor cells and driving the Warburg effect. PGK1 generates ATP through the reversible phosphorylation reaction of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate (1,3-BPG) to Mg-adenosine-5′-diphosphate (Mg-ADP). In addition to its role in regulating cellular metabolism, PGK1 plays a pivotal role in autophagy induction, regulation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), and various mechanisms including tumor cell drug resistance, and so on. Given its multifaceted functions within cells, the involvement of PGK1 in many types of cancer, including breast cancer, astrocytoma, metastatic colon cancer, and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, is intricate. Notably, PGK1 can function as an intracellular protein kinase to coordinate tumor growth, migration, and invasion via posttranslational modifications (PTMs). Furthermore, elevated expression levels of PGK1 have been observed in cancer tissues, indicating its association with unfavorable treatment outcomes and prognosis. This review provides a comprehensive summary of PGK1’s expression pattern, structural features, functional properties, involvement in PTMs, and interaction with tumors. Additionally highlighted are the prospects for developing and applying related inhibitors that confirm the indispensable value of PGK1 in tumor progression.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal system disease characterized by low bone mass and altered bone microarchitecture, with an increased risk of fractures. Classical theories hold that osteoporosis is essentially a bone remodeling disorder caused by estrogen deficiency/aging (primary osteoporosis) or secondary to diseases/drugs (secondary osteoporosis). However, with the in-depth understanding of the intricate nexus between both bone and the immune system in recent decades, the novel field of “Immunoporosis” was proposed by Srivastava et al. (2018, 2022), which delineated and characterized the growing importance of immune cells in osteoporosis. This review aimed to summarize the response of the immune system (immune cells and inflammatory factors) in different types of osteoporosis. In postmenopausal osteoporosis, estrogen deficiency-mediated alteration of immune cells stimulates the activation of osteoclasts in varying degrees. In senile osteoporosis, aging contributes to continuous activation of the immune system at a low level which breaks immune balance, ultimately resulting in bone loss. Further in diabetic osteoporosis, insulin deficiency or resistance-induced hyperglycemia could lead to abnormal regulation of the immune cells, with excessive production of proinflammatory factors, resulting in osteoporosis. Thus, we reviewed the pathophysiology of osteoporosis from a novel insight-immunoporosis, which is expected to provide a specific therapeutic target for different types of osteoporosis.

Evidence on the health benefits of vitamin C supplementation in highly polluted areas has not been evaluated. We aimed to evaluate whether dietary vitamin C supplementation can improve vascular health linked to particulate matter (PM) exposure. A randomised double-blind crossover trial involving 58 health young adults was performed in Shijiazhuang, China in 2018. All subjects were randomly assigned to the vitamin C supplementation group (2000 mg/d) or placebo group for a week alternating with a 2 week washout period. Fifteen circulating biomarkers were measured. Linear mixed-effect model was applied to evaluate the effect of vitamin C supplementation on health outcomes. The average concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 were 164.91 and 327.05 μg/m3, respectively. Vitamin C supplementation was significantly associated with a 19.47% decrease in interleukin-6 (IL-6), 17.30% decrease in tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-α), 34.01% decrease in C-reactive protein (CRP), 3.37% decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and 6.03% decrease in pulse pressure (PP). Furthermore, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) was significantly increased by 7.15%. Sex-subgroup analysis showed that vitamin C significantly reduced TNF-α by 27.85% in male participants and significantly increased APOB by 6.28% and GSH-Px by 14.47% only in female participants. This study indicated that vitamin C supplementation may protect vascular vessels against PM exposure among healthy young adults in China.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies, their applications in the field of agriculture, particularly in plant disease detection, have become increasingly extensive. This study focuses on the high-precision detection of tomato diseases, which is of paramount importance for agricultural economic benefits and food safety. To achieve this aim, a tomato disease image dataset was first constructed, and a NanoSegmenter model based on the Transformer structure was proposed. Additionally, lightweight technologies, such as the inverted bottleneck technique, quantization, and sparse attention mechanism, were introduced to optimize the model’s performance and computational efficiency. The experimental results demonstrated excellent performance of the model in tomato disease detection tasks, achieving a precision of 0.98, a recall of 0.97, and an mIoU of 0.95, while the computational efficiency reached an inference speed of 37 FPS. In summary, this study provides an effective solution for high-precision detection of tomato diseases and offers insights and references for future research.

Selenium (Se) plays an important role in the growth of plants. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial legume forage crop with high nutritional value and Se-rich functions. Many studies have shown that selenium can promote alfalfa growth, but few have explored the molecular biology mechanisms behind this effect. In this study, alfalfa was divided into two groups. One group was sprayed with sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and the other group was sprayed with distilled water as a control. This study determined the growth, reproductive traits, physiological changes, transcriptome and metabolome of both groups of alfalfa. We found that foliar spraying of 100 mg/L Na2SeO3 could significantly increase the growth rate, dry weight, total Se content, amount of pollen per flower, pollen viability, pod spirals, and seed number per pod of alfalfa plants. The level of chlorophyll, soluble protein, proline, and glutathione also increased dramatically in Na2SeO3-sprayed alfalfa seedlings. After transcriptome and metabolome analysis, a total of 614 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 1500 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs), including 26 secondary differentially metabolites were identified. The DEGs were mainly enriched in MAPK signaling pathway, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, isoflavonoid biosynthesis, cutin, suberine, and wax biosynthesis, and glycerolipid metabolism. The DEMs were mainly enriched in flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, carbon metabolism, glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis. Integrative analysis of transcriptome and metabolome showed that the foliar spraying of Na2SeO3 mainly affects phenylpropanoid biosynthesis to promote alfalfa growth.

The evolution of macromolecular complex is a fundamental biological question, which is related to the origin of life and also guides our practice in synthetic biology. The chemosensory system is one of the complex structures that evolved very early in bacteria and displays enormous diversity and complexity in terms of composition and array structure in modern species. However, how the diversity and complexity of the chemosensory system evolved remains unclear. Here, using the Campylobacterota phylum with a robust "eco-evo" framework, we investigated the co-evolution of the chemosensory system and one of its important signaling outputs, flagellar machinery. Our analyses show that substantial flagellar gene alterations will lead to switch of its primary chemosensory class from one to another, or result in a hybrid of two classes. Unexpectedly, we discovered that the high-torque generating flagellar motor structure of Campylobacter jejuni and Helicobacter pylori likely evolved in the last common ancestor of the Campylobacterota phylum. Later lineages that experienced significant flagellar alterations lost some key components of complex scaffolding structures, thus derived simpler structures than their ancestor. Overall, this study revealed the co-evolutionary path of the chemosensory system and flagellar system, and highlights that the evolution of flagellar structural complexity requires more investigation in the Bacteria domain based on a resolved phylogenetic framework, with no assumptions on the evolutionary direction.

The exceptionally rich fossil record available for the equid family has provided textbook examples of macroevolutionary changes. Horses, asses, and zebras represent three extant subgenera of Equus lineage, while the Sussemionus subgenus is another remarkable Equus lineage ranging from North America to Ethiopia in the Pleistocene. We sequenced 26 archaeological specimens from Northern China in the Holocene that could be assigned morphologically and genetically to Equus ovodovi, a species representative of Sussemionus. We present the first high-quality complete genome of the Sussemionus lineage, which was sequenced to 13.4× depth of coverage. Radiocarbon dating demonstrates that this lineage survived until ~3500 years ago, despite continued demographic collapse during the Last Glacial Maximum and the great human expansion in East Asia. We also confirmed the Equus phylogenetic tree and found that Sussemionus diverged from the ancestor of non-caballine equids ~2.3–2.7 million years ago and possibly remained affected by secondary gene flow post-divergence. We found that the small genetic diversity, rather than enhanced inbreeding, limited the species’ chances of survival. Our work adds to the growing literature illustrating how ancient DNA can inform on extinction dynamics and the long-term resilience of species surviving in cryptic population pockets.

AimsSesamin, the main lignin constituent of sesame, plays a pivotal role in regulating physical state. Some studies have evidenced that the supplementation of sesamin may decrease cardiovascular disease risk. The goal of this systematic review was to summarize evidence of the effects of sesamin supplementation on obesity, blood pressure, and lipid profile in humans by performing a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.Data SynthesisFive databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched electronically from inception to July 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials that assessed the impact of sesamin on obesity, blood pressure, and lipid profile. Weighted mean difference (WMD) and standard deviation (SD) were used to present the major outcomes.ConclusionsSeven trials (n = 212 participants) were included in the overall analysis. Results showed that sesamin supplementation caused a great reduction in TC (WMD: -10.893 mg/dl, 95% CI: −19.745 to −2.041, p = 0.016), LDL-c (WMD: -8.429 mg/dl, 95% CI: −16.086 to −0.771, p = 0.031), and SBP (WMD: −3.662 mmHg, 95% CI: −6.220 to −1.105, p = 0.005), whereas it had no effect on HDL-c, TG, DBP, or weight. Subgroup analysis showed that duration, parallel design, and unhealthy status can affect TC, LDL-c, and SBP evidently. We did not discover a strong link between indicators’ changes and duration of supplementation. Sesamin can be used as an obtainable dietary supplement to improve blood pressure and blood lipids, and further as a health product to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

We present the first demonstration of an actively Q-switched orthogonally polarized dual-wavelength Nd:YLF/YVO4 Raman laser to our knowledge. The gain competition of the orthogonally polarized dual-wavelength fundamental laser at 1047 and 1053 nm was ultimately avoided by incorporating two Nd:YLF crystals into two laser resonators. By adjusting the gain or loss difference of two resonators, the pulse synchronization of the orthogonally polarized dual-wavelength Raman laser was realized. Benefitting from the efficient thermal stress and energy-transfer upconversion management of Nd:YLF crystal, a maximum dual-wavelength Raman output power of 4.5 W was obtained with M2

Trypophobia is a strong emotion of disgust evoked by clusters of holes or round objects (e.g., lotus seed pod). It has become increasingly popular and been studied since 2010s, mainly in the West and Japan. Considering this, trypophobia might be a modern emotion, and hence urbanization possibly plays key roles in trypophobia. To address this issue, we compared the degree of trypophobia between urban and less urban people in China. In an experiment, we asked participants about their degree of discomfort from trypophobic images. The results showed that trypophobia occurred in both groups, although the effect size was larger in urban than less urban people. Moreover, post-experimental interviews and post-hoc analyses revealed that older people in less urban area did not experience as much trypophobia. Our findings suggest that trypophobia links to urbanization and age-related properties.

An efficient enhancement of 2.78 μm emission from the transition of Er3+: 4I11/2 → 4I13/2 by Tm3+ introduction in the Er/Tm: PbF2 crystal was grown by the Bridgman technique for the first time. The spectroscopic properties, energy transfer mechanism, and first-principles calculations of as-grown crystals were investigated in detail. The co-doped Tm3+ ion can offer an appropriate sensitization and deactivation effect for Er3+ ion at the same time in PbF2 crystal under the pump of conventional 800 nm laser diodes (LDs). With the introduction of Tm3+ ion into the Er3+: PbF2 crystal, the Er/Tm: PbF2 crystal exhibited an enhancing 2.78 μm mid-infrared (MIR) emission. Furthermore, the cyclic energy transfer mechanism that contains several energy transfer processes and cross-relaxation processes was proposed, which would well achieve the population inversion between the Er3+: 4I11/2 and Er3+: 4I13/2 levels. First-principles calculations were performed to find that good performance originates from the uniform distribution of Er3+ and Tm3+ ions in PbF2 crystal. This work will provide an avenue to design MIR laser materials with good performance.

A distinguishing characteristic of normal and cancer cells is the difference in their nuclear chromatin content and distribution. This difference can be revealed by the transmission spectra of nuclei stained with a pH-sensitive stain. Here, we used hematoxylin–eosin (HE) to stain hepatic carcinoma tissues and obtained spectral–spatial data from their nuclei using hyperspectral microscopy. The transmission spectra of the nuclei were then used to train a support vector machine (SVM) model for cell classification. Especially, we found that the chromatin distribution in cancer cells is more uniform, because of which the correlation coefficients for the spectra at different points in their nuclei are higher. Consequently, we exploited this feature to improve the SVM model. The sensitivity and specificity for the identification of cancer cells could be increased to 99% and 98%, respectively. We also designed an image-processing method for the extraction of information from cell nuclei to automate the identification process.

This study aimed to explore the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in the rapid diagnosis of gastric cancer. The SERS spectra of 68 serum samples from gastric cancer patients and healthy volunteers were acquired. The characteristic ratio method (CRM) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to differentiate gastric cancer serum from normal serum. Compared with healthy volunteers, the serum SERS intensity of gastric cancer patients was relatively high at 722cm−1, while it was relatively low at 588, 644, 861, 1008, 1235, 1397, 1445 and 1586cm−1. These results indicated that the relative content of nucleic acids in the serum of gastric cancer patients rises while the relative content of amino acids and carbohydrates decreases. In PCA, the sensitivity and specificity of discriminating gastric cancer were 94.1% and 94.1%, respectively, with the accuracy of 94.1%. Based on the intensity ratios of four characteristic peaks at 722, 861, 1008 and 1397cm−1, CRM presented the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 97.4%, respectively, and the accuracy of 98.5%. Therefore, the three peak intensity ratios of I722/I861, I722/I1008 and I722/I1397 can be considered as biological fingerprint information for gastric cancer diagnosis and can rapidly and directly reflect the physiological and pathological changes associated with gastric cancer development. This study provides an important basis and standards for the early diagnosis of gastric cancer.

In the past few decades, the multifunctional optical crystals for all-solid-state Raman lasers have been widely studied by many scholars due to their compactness, convenience and excellent performance. In this review, we briefly show two kinds of multifunctional Raman crystals: self-Raman (laser and Raman effects) crystals and self-frequency-doubled Raman (frequency-doubling and Raman effects) crystals. We firstly introduce the properties of the self-Raman laser crystals, including vanadate, tungstate, molybdate and silicate doped with rare earth ions, as well as self-frequency-doubled Raman crystals, including KTiOAsO4 (KTA) and BaTeMo2O9 (BTM). Additionally, the domestic and international progress in research on multifunctional Raman crystals is summarized in the continuous wave, passively Q-switched, actively Q-switched and mode-locked regimes. Finally, we present the bottleneck in multifunctional Raman crystals and the outlook for future development. Through this review, we contribute to a general understanding of multifunctional Raman crystals.

DNA origami nanostructures are widely employed in various areas of fundamental and applied research. Due to the tremendous success of the DNA origami technique in the academic field, considerable efforts currently aim at the translation of this technology from a laboratory setting to real-world applications, such as nanoelectronics, drug delivery, and biosensing. While many of these real-world applications rely on an intact DNA origami shape, they often also subject the DNA origami nanostructures to rather harsh and potentially damaging environmental and processing conditions. Furthermore, in the context of DNA origami mass production, the long-term storage of DNA origami nanostructures or their pre-assembled components also becomes an issue of high relevance, especially regarding the possible negative effects on DNA origami structural integrity. Thus, we investigated the effect of staple age on the self-assembly and stability of DNA origami nanostructures using atomic force microscopy. Different harsh processing conditions were simulated by applying different sample preparation protocols. Our results show that staple solutions may be stored at −20 °C for several years without impeding DNA origami self-assembly. Depending on DNA origami shape and superstructure, however, staple age may have negative effects on DNA origami stability under harsh treatment conditions. Mass spectrometry analysis of the aged staple mixtures revealed no signs of staple fragmentation. We, therefore, attribute the increased DNA origami sensitivity toward environmental conditions to an accumulation of damaged nucleobases, which undergo weaker base-pairing interactions and thus lead to reduced duplex stability.

The content of berberine hydrochloride (BH) in compound berberine tablets (CBTs) is subject to strict requirements. Its content is usually measured based on chemical analysis. In this paper, the fluorescence spectral imaging method was used to study the relative content of BH from a physics perspective. By comparing the relative fluorescence intensity of self-made CBTs with different mass percentages of BH, a linear positive relationship was observed between the BH content and the relative fluorescence intensity, and accordingly the quality of CBTs of different brands was evaluated. The results indicate that the fluorescence spectral imaging method can be a simple, fast and nondestructive semi-quantitative analysis method to determine the content of BH in CBTs, and this method has great potential in the quality control of CBTs.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used as important energy storage and energy supply devices. The porous design and heteroatomization modification of carbon-based anode materials are crucial for achieving high-capacity and reversible energy storage in LIBs. Sol-gel method and pyrolysis treatment were used to obtain silica/silver composite particles used as templates. Polyphosphazene-coated silica/silver composite composite carbon materials (SiO2/Ag@PZS-C) were synthesized through in-situ self-assembly and carbonization of polyphosphazene. The electrochemical behavior and lithium storage mechanism of SiO2/Ag@PZS-C was also studied. The results reveal that the composite exhibited high specific capacity, stable cycling and superior rate performance. The double modification of silver nanoparticles and polyphosphazene carbon significantly improves the conductivity of silica and reduces the volume change. Moreover, the carbon shell of polyphosphazene facilitated the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface film (SEI), preventing direct contact between the active material and the electrolyte, thereby substantially enhancing lithium storage performance.
