The demand for advanced materials with exceptional mechanical and thermal properties has increased significantly in various aerospace, automotive, and power generation industries in recent years. Inconel 718 superalloy is preferred due to its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and elevated temperature stability. However, machining Inconel 718 poses substantial challenges due to its inherent toughness, low thermal conductivity, and high work hardening rate. This study investigated the drilling performance of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ)-coated Inconel 718 superalloy using Abrasive Water Jet machining. The objective of this study is to comprehensively examine the effects of process parameters, such as water pressure (WP), abrasive flow rate (AFR), and stand-off distance (SOD), on the quality and efficiency of drilling YSZ-coated Inconel 718. Experimental investigations are conducted using a specially designed AWJ setup. Further, the dragon-fly optimization algorithm is proposed to identify optimal drilling process parameters to simultaneously minimize output responses like entry, exit, and erosion diameters. Comparing the proposed algorithm's performance against that of the Harmony Search and Jaya algorithms demonstrates its effectiveness.

The current research examines the effectiveness of cryogenically treated (CT) tungsten carbide cutting inserts on Custom450 stainless steel using multi-objective soft computing approaches. The Taguchi-based L27 orthogonal array was employed in the experiments. During milling operations, cutting force, surface roughness, and cutting temperature were measured at different spindle speeds (rpm), feed rates (mm/min), and constant depths of cut (mm). The surface roughness and chip morphology of the Custom 450 stainless steel machined by cryo-treated (CT) and untreated (UT) cutting tool inserts were compared across various responses to cutting temperature and force. This paper also carried out multi-objective optimization, employing algorithm techniques such as Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GHO), Grey Wolf Optimization(GWO), Harmony Search Algorithm(HAS), and Ant line Optimization (ALO). The Multi-objective Taguchi approach and TOPSIS were first used to optimize the machining process parameters (spindle speed, feed rate, and cryogenic treatment) with different performance characteristics. Second, to relate the machining process parameters with the performance characteristics (cutting force, cutting temperature, and surface roughness), a mathematical model was developed using response surface analysis. The created mathematical response model was validated using ANOVA. The results showed that in IGD values of GHO, GWO, HSA and ALO module had 2.5765, 2.4706, 2.3647 and 2.5882 respectively, ALO has the best performance indicator. A Friedman’s test was also conducted, revealing higher resolution with the ALO method than with the HSA, GWO, and GHO methods. The results of the scanning test show that the ALO approach is workable.

This study concentrates on the utility of the newly formulated machining fluid used for turning AISI 4340 steel under the near dry machining method. The preparation of the novel machining fluid involves a blending of vegetable oils and conventional lubricant in a 50:50 ratio. Three distinct compositions were investigated within this work. The biodegradability tests confirms that the novel lubricantaligns with the ethos of "Green Machining." The study's focal points include an analysis of the following crucial metrics – machining force, machining temperature, and surface finish. From the analysis, the best-formulated blend was identified. To evaluate its performance, the variance analysis on the dataset (ANOVA) and Weighted Entropy decision-making method that ranks the best option along with alternatives was executed. Further, the optimal process parameters were determined using Dragon Fly Algorithm (DFO) and Particle Swarm Algorithm (PSO) to enhance the efficacy and quality of machining. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The selection of an appropriate number of features and their combinations will play a major role in improving the learning accuracy, computation cost, and understanding of machine learning models. In this present work, 22 gray-level co-occurrence matrix features extracted from magnetic flux leakage images captured in steam generator tubes’ cracks are considered for developing a machine learning model to predict and analyze crack dimensions in terms of their length, depth, and width. The performance of the models is examined by considering R2 and RMSE values calculated using both training and testing data sets. The F Score and Mutual Information Score methods have been applied to prioritize the features. To analyze the effect of different machine learning models, their number of features, and their selection methods, a Taguchi experimental design has been implemented and an analysis of variance test has been conducted. The dynamic population gray wolf algorithm (DPGWO) has been adopted to select the best features and their combinations. Due to the two contradictory natures of performance metrics, Pareto optimal solutions are considered, and the best one is obtained using Deng’s method. The effectiveness of DPGWO is proved by comparing its performance with Grey Wolf Optimization and Moth Flame Optimization algorithms using the Friedman test and performance indicators, namely inverted generational distance and spacing.

Custom 450 stainless steel is the most desirable material across industries due to its widespread application in the aerospace, defense and marine industries. Stainless-steel materials are challenging to deal with and fall into the list of hard-to-process materials due to their low heat conduction coefficient and high mechanical properties. In this research work, end milling was carried out on Custom 450 stainless steel machined using TiAlN coated with tungsten carbide inserts that have been cryo-treated (CT) for 24 h (24 h) and 36 h (36 h), as well as untreated (UT) inserts. The inserts were evaluated in terms of feed force, feed rate and consistent depth of cut (ap) at various spindle speeds (S). Also examined were the tool morphology, chip anatomy and surface morphology of cryo-treated material compared to untreated inserts at various responses to cutting force (Fx, Fy, Fz), cutting temperature (Tc), vibration and surface abrasion. For inserts that have been cryo-treated for 36 h, the feed force (Fx) value was 44% and 5% less compared to inserts treated for 24 h and in UT inserts, respectively. Furthermore, for 24-h and 36-h CT inserts, feed force (Fx) was 12% and 20% less compared to a UT insert. Using 24-h cryo-treated inserts as opposed to UT inserts significantly reduced the surface roughness by 20%. Cutting inserts that have undergone cryogenic treatment have been observed to exhibit longer cutting tool life due to less wear and friction on the cutting edges.

This work addresses an evolutionary algorithmic approach to reduce the surplus pieces in selective assembly to increase success rates. A novel equal area amidst unequal bin numbers (EAUB) method is proposed for classifying the parts of the ball bearing assembly by considering the various tolerance ranges of parts. The L16 orthogonal array is used for identifying the effectiveness of the proposed EAUB method through varying the number of bins of the parts of an assembly. Because of qualities such as minimal setting parameters, ease of understanding and implementation, and rapid convergence, the moth–flame optimization (MFO) algorithm is put forward in this work for identifying the optimal combination of bins of the parts of an assembly toward maximizing the percentage of the success rate of making assemblies. Computational results showed a 5.78% improvement in the success rate through the proposed approach compared with the past literature. The usage of the MFO algorithm is justified by comparing the computational results with the harmony search algorithm.

Electrochemical machining (ECM) is a preferred advanced machining process for machining Monel 400 alloys. During the machining, the toxic nickel hydroxides in the sludge are formed. Therefore, it becomes necessary to determine the optimum ECM process parameters that minimize the nickel presence (NP) emission in the sludge while maximizing the material removal rate (MRR). In this investigation, the predominant ECM process parameters, such as the applied voltage, flow rate, and electrolyte concentration, were controlled to study their effect on the performance measures (i.e., MRR and NP). A meta-heuristic algorithm, the grey wolf optimizer (GWO), was used for the multi-objective optimization of the process parameters for ECM, and its results were compared with the moth-flame optimization (MFO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. It was observed from the surface, main, and interaction plots of this experimentation that all the process variables influenced the objectives significantly. The TOPSIS algorithm was employed to convert multiple objectives into a single objective used in meta-heuristic algorithms. In the convergence plot for the MRR model, the PSO algorithm converged very quickly in 10 iterations, while GWO and MFO took 14 and 64 iterations, respectively. In the case of the NP model, the PSO tool took only 6 iterations to converge, whereas MFO and GWO took 48 and 88 iterations, respectively. However, both MFO and GWO obtained the same solutions of EC = 132.014 g/L, V = 2406 V, and FR = 2.8455 L/min with the best conflicting performances (i.e., MRR = 0.242 g/min and NP = 57.7202 PPM). Hence, it is confirmed that these metaheuristic algorithms of MFO and GWO are more suitable for finding the optimum process parameters for machining Monel 400 alloys with ECM. This work explores a greater scope for the ECM process with better machining performance.

Tolerance cost and machining time play crucial roles while performing tolerance allocation in complex assemblies. The aim of the proposed work is to minimize the above-said manufacturing objectives for allocating optimum tolerance to the components of complex assemblies, by considering the proper process and machine selections from the given alternatives. A novel methodology that provides a two-step solution is developed for this work. First, a heuristic approach is applied to determine the best machine for each process, and then a combined whale optimization algorithm with a univariate search method is used to allocate optimum tolerances with the best process selection for each sub-stage/operation. The efficiency of the proposed novel methodology is validated by solving two typical tolerance allocation problems of complex assemblies: a wheel mounting assembly and a knuckle joint assembly. Compared with previous approaches, the proposed methodology showed a considerable reduction in tolerance cost and machining time in relatively less computation time.

The proposed work aims to acquire the maximum number of non-linear assemblies with closer assembly tolerance specifications by mating the different bins’ components. Before that, the components are classified based on the range of tolerance values and grouped into different bins. Further, the manufacturing process of the components is selected from the given and known alternative processes. It is incredibly tedious to obtain the best combinations of bins and the best process together. Hence, a novel approach using the combination of the univariate search method and the harmony search algorithm is proposed in this work. Overrunning clutch assembly is taken as an example. The components of overrunning clutch assembly are manufactured with a wide tolerance value using the best process selected from the given alternatives by the univariate search method. Further, the manufactured components are grouped into three to nine bins. A combination of the best bins is obtained for the various assembly specifications by implementing the harmony search algorithm. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated by showing 24.9% of cost-savings while making overrunning clutch assembly compared with the existing method. In this research work, the machinability of turning Hastelloy X with a PVD Ti-Al-N coated insert tool in dry, wet, and cryogenic machining environments is investigated. The machinability indices namely cutting force (CF), surface roughness (SR), and cutting temperature (CT) are studied for the different set of input process parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, and machining environment, through the experiments conducted as per L27 orthogonal array. Minitab 17 is used to create quadratic Multiple Linear Regression Models (MLRM) based on the association between turning parameters and machineability indices. The Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm is proposed in this work to identify the optimal set of turning parameters through the MLRM models, in view of minimizing the machinability indices. Three case studies by considering individual machinability indices, a combination of dual indices, and a combination of all three indices, are performed. The suggested MFO algorithm’s effectiveness is evaluated in comparison to the findings of Genetic, Grass-Hooper, Grey-Wolf, and Particle Swarm Optimization algorithms. From the results, it is identified that the MFO algorithm outperformed the others. In addition, a confirmation experiment is conducted to verify the results of the MFO algorithm’s optimal combination of turning parameters.
