1. Inferring the stability of concentrated emulsions from droplet configuration information

Abstract

When droplets are tightly packed in a 2D microchannel, coalescence of a pair of droplets can trigger an avalanche of coalescence events that propagate through the entire emulsion. This propagation is found to be stochastic, i.e. every coalescence event does not necessarily trigger another. To study how the local probabilistic propagation affects the dynamics of the avalanche, as a whole, a stochastic agent based model is used. Taking as input, i) how the droplets are packed (configuration) and ii) a measure of local probabilistic propagation (experimentally derived; function of fluid and other system parameters), the model predicts the expected size distribution of avalanches. In this article, we investigate how droplet configuration affects the avalanche dynamics. We find the mean size of these avalanches to depend non-trivially on how droplets are packed together. Large variations in the avalanche dynamics are observed when droplet packing are different, even when the other system properties (number of droplets, fluid properties, channel geometry, etc.) are kept constant. Bidisperse emulsions show less variation in the dynamics and they are surprisingly more stable than monodisperse emulsions. To get a systems-level understanding of how a given droplet-configuration either facilitates or impedes the propagation of an avalanche, we employ a graph-theoretic analysis, where emulsions are expressed as graphs. We find that the properties of the underlying graph, namely the mean degree and the algebraic connectivity, are well correlated with the observed avalanche dynamics. Abstract

Digital innovation (DI) has enabled businesses to enhance their existing market offerings by integrating digital features. Despite advanced technologies, substantial marketing efforts, and global recognition, businesses can still struggle to convince customers to adopt their digital market offering. This process of spreading novel innovation is known as diffusion. In the fast-growing digital world, due to the unique characteristics of DI, traditional diffusion theories and models shows limited explanatory power, creating challenges for researchers and practitioners alike. With the aim to explore these challenges, we position our research within the IS literature with the following research question: "How and why do diffusion enablers and barriers emerge during digital innovation?". We conducted an interpretive case study of Company X, one of the world's largest consulting firms and an active DI practitioner. Our findings suggest that digital innovation diffusion can be enabled or hindered by several understudied interdependencies in its technological architecture. Furthermore, for successful diffusion, how DI distributed division of labor between layers must be effectively embedded and aligned for value in the clients' context. This study provides novel insights, exciting research avenues, and a diffusion strategy for DI practitioners.

Abstract

The concept of open data in the public sector is not new, and governments have long beenthe primary producers and collectors of data in a variety of sectors. Despite this, previousresearch mostly focused on private open data and only a limited number of studies haveaddressed public sector open data. This research gap serves as the reference point of thisstudy and addresses the value creation in public sector open data. To address this, theauthors conducted a qualitative case study on the Swedish municipality’s open dataplatform. Accordingly, the authors identified values created from the municipality’s opendata. Transparency and accountability, citizen participation and interaction to achievegovernment goals, better decision-making, economic growth, achievement ofenvironmental and sustainable goals, increased collaboration between differentdepartments within the municipality, and knowledge sharing are some of the values. Thisstudy contributes to the growing empirical knowledge on value creation in open data andprovides insights to local municipalities operating open data platforms.
