Some factors affect the coal grindability such as moisture content, petrographic composition, hardness, fragility and rank of the coals. The grindability of the pre-heated coal is assumed to be positively affected and facilitates size reduction processes. In this study, effects and relationship of traditional drying methods (air circulated fan oven and air drying) and microwave drying on the grindability of coals were investigated. For this purpose, two different lignite coals; Tufanbeyli and Ilgın lignite coals were selected. The research parameters; drying method, drying temperature, drying time were selected as independent variables. The particle size distributions of ground coal samples in a rod mill, under the same conditions were determined. The particle size distribution, d50 and d80 values of the ground coals were considered as dependent variables. As a result of the experimental studies, it was found that lignite coal grinding was easier with microwave drying compared to the results of experiments with air drying and oven drying and drying increases the coal grindability with some extend., Kömürlerin öğütülebilirliğini; nem oranı, petrografik birleşimi, sertlik, kırılabilirlik ve yaşı gibi faktörler etkilemektedir. Ön ısıtma işlemine tabi tutulan kömürlerin öğütülebilirlikleri olumlu yönde etkilenmekte ve boyut küçültme işlemlerini kolaylaştırabileceği bilinmektedir. Bu çalışmada geleneksel kurutma yöntemleri (sabit ısıtmalı fanlı hava sirkülasyonlu etüv, havada kurutma) ile mikrodalgada kurutmanın kömürün öğütülebilirliğine olan etkileri ve ilişkileri araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla iki farklı linyit kömürü; Tufanbeyli ve Ilgın linyit kömürleri seçilmiştir. Araştırma parametreleri olarak; kurutma tipi, kurutma sıcaklığı, kurutma süresi bağımsız değişkenler olarak seçilmiştir. Aynı koşullarda çubuklu değirmende öğütülmüş kömür numunelerin tane boyu dağılımları; d50 ve d80 değerleri ise bağımlı değişken olarak kabul edilmiştir. Yapılan deneysel çalışmalara göre havada kurutma ve etüvde kurutma metodu ile gerçekleştirilen deneylerin sonucuna kıyasla mikrodalga kurutma yöntemi uygulanan linyit kömürlerinin öğütülmesi daha kolay olduğu ve kurutmanın kömür öğütülebilirliğini bir dereceye kadar artırdığı saptanmıştır.

In this study, the gross calorific value (GCV)of washed Turkish lignite coals was predicted by using dry-basis proximateanalysis data of coal samples with machine learning methods. The data set wasgenerated by using ash (A), volatile matter (VM), sulfur (S) and GCV variablesobtained from the analysis results. The GCV prediction models were developed byapplying Support Vector Regression (SVR) and three different Artificial NeuralNetworks (ANNs), namely Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), General Regression NeuralNetwork (GRNN) and Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFN), separately tothe data set. The generalization capability of the developed models was ensuredby using 10-fold cross-validation, and the prediction accuracy of the modelswas calculated by using performance metrics Multiple Correlation Coefficient (R), Root Mean Square Error(RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE).For GCV prediction, the results reveal that the SVR-based model performedslightly better than the ANN-based models and among the ANN-based models, theRBFN-based model performed better than MLP- and GRNN-based models., Bu çalışmada yıkanmış Türklinyit kömürlerinin üst ısıl değeri (GCV), makine öğrenmesi yöntemleri ilekömür numunelerinin kuru baz kısa analiz sonuçları kullanılarak tahminedilmiştir. Laboratuvar kömür analiz sonuçlarından elde edilen kül (A), uçucumadde (VM), kükürt (S) ve GCV değişkenleri kullanılarak veri kümesioluşturulmuştur. Veri kümesine, Destek Vektör Regresyonu (SVR) ile Çok KatmanlıAlgılayıcı (MLP), Genel Regresyon Sinir Ağı (GRNN) ve Radyal Temelli FonksiyonSinir Ağı (RBFN) olmak üzere üç farklı Yapay Sinir Ağı (ANN) uygulanarak GCVtahmin modelleri geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen modellerin performansgenelleştirme kabiliyeti 10-katlı çapraz-doğrulama kullanılarak sağlanmış vemodellerin tahmin doğruluğu, performans ölçütleri Çoklu Korelasyon Katsayısı (R), Kök Ortalama Kare Hatası(RMSE), Ortalama Mutlak Hata (MAE) ve Ortalama Mutlak Yüzde Hata (MAPE)kullanılarak hesaplanmıştır. Sonuçlar, GCV tahmini için, tüm modeller arasındaSVR tabanlı modelin ANN tabanlı modellere göre biraz daha iyi, ANN tabanlımodeller arasında ise RBFN tabanlı modelin MLP ve GRNN tabanlı modellere göredaha iyi performans gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur.

The use of industrial wastes in soil stabilization not only provides for the re-use of waste materials, which may cause environmental pollution, but also leads to cost benefits. In this context, the use of industrial wastes in the stabilization of fine-grained soils has become a research topic in recent years. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential use of granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS) in clayey soil stabilization. In this study, the GBFS obtained from the Iskenderun iron-steel plant as an industrial waste was ground into two different fineness levels, and the effects of their incorporation into low-plasticity Kolsuz clay and high-plasticity bentonite clay in various rates (5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 50%) on the particle weight of unit volume, the consistency limits, and the compaction parameters are investigated. Based on the experimental results, it is clear that the GBFS has a positive effect on the stabilization of both clayey soils. It was also concluded that the improvement in bentonite clay is greater than that in Kolsuz clay. Thus, GBFS seems to be a promising material for the stabilization of clayey soils. Uporaba industrijskih odpadkov pri stabilizaciji tal ne zagotavlja samo ponovne uporabe odpadkov, ki lahko povzročajo onesnaževanje okolja, ampak tudi finančne koristi. Zaradi tega je postala uporaba industrijskih odpadkov pri stabilizaciji drobnozrnatih tal predmet raziskav zadnjih let. Namen te študije je oceniti potencialno uporabo mlete granulirane plavžne žlindre (MGPŽ) za stabilizacijo glinenih tal. V študiji je bil MGPŽ, pridobljen kot industrijski odpadek železarne in jeklarne Iskendurun, zmlet v dve različni velikosti. Raziskovali smo učinke mešanja te žlindre v slabo gnetljivo Kolsuz glino in dobro gnetljivo bentonitno glino v različnih razmerjih (5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, in 50%) na prostorninsko težo, konsistenčne meje in zbijalne parametre. Eksperimentalni rezultati so pokazali, da ima MGPŽ pozitiven učinek na stabilizacijo obeh vrst glinenih tal. Prav tako lahko zaključimo, da je izboljšanje v bentonitni glini večje kot v Kolsuz glini. Zaradi tega je MGPŽ obetaven material za stabilizacijo glinenih tal.

Asphaltite is a substance originating frompetroleum through metamorphism as a result of the impact of the temperature andpressure when petroleum settles in slits and cracks in the surrounding areasfollowing tectonic movements. Asphaltites are often seen as vein-like massesalong the bedding. Since it is a substance originating from petroleum, it has ahigh calorific value and consists of elements such as nickel, molybdenum andvanadium, it is regarded as a valuable source. In Şırnak and Hakkari provincesin Turkey, asphaltite deposits in the form of 13 veins were detected. Theasphaltite source with a high calorific value in Şırnak-Slopi allowed theconstruction of a thermal power plant at 405 MW power with the fluidized bedboiler technology. The use of asphaltite as fuel is a big problem due to itsmineral matter and sulfur content. Therefore, it is inconvenient to use it fordomestic heating purposes in residential centers. Various cleaning works havebeen carried out to make asphaltites a suitable energy source for theenvironment. In these studies, although some decrease in the ash content hasbeen achieved, no decrease in the sulfur content was observed. In this study,information about asphaltite as well as information about Turkey’s asphaltitesources was provided in addition to a comprehensive examination of the studiesthat were conducted to reduce environmental damages resulting from the use of asphaltiteas an energy source., Petrolün tektonik hareketler sonucu kendiyatağından ayrılarak çevredeki yarık ve çatlaklara yerleşerek sıcaklık vebasıncın etkisi ile metamorfizmaya uğramış maddelere asfaltit denir. Petrolkökenli olması, kalorisinin yüksek olması ve içerisinde nikel, molibden,vanadyum gibi elementleri bulundurması nedeniyle önemli bir kaynak olarakgörülmektedir. Türkiye’de Şırnak ve Hakkari illerinde 13 filon halinde bulunanasfaltit yatakları tespit edilmiştir. Kalori değerinin yüksek olmasıŞırnak-Silopi’de bulunan asfaltit kaynağının, 405 MW gücünde akışkan yataklıkazan teknolojili termik santral kurulmasına olanak sağlamıştır. Mineral maddeve kükürt asfaltitin yakıt olarak kullanılmasında büyük bir sorundur. Bu yüzdenyerleşim merkezlerinde evsel ısıtmalarda kullanılması sakıncalıdır.Asfaltitleri çevreye uyumlu bir enerji kaynağı haline getirmek için çeşitlitemizleme çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Yapılan çalışmalar sonucunda kül oranındadüşüş saptanmasına rağmen kükürt değerlerinde istenilen oranda düşüş gözlemlenememiştir.Bu çalışmada asfaltit hakkında bilgiler Türkiye’nin asfaltit kaynakları ilebirlikte verilirken asfaltitin enerji kaynağı olarak kullanımından kaynaklanançevresel zararlarını azaltmak için yapılan çalışmalar hakkında kapsamlıbilgiler sunulmuştur.

Mühendislik uygulamalarında numunelerin elde edilmesi, deneylerin yapılması ve maliyet giderleri yüzünden bir çok yönüyle elde edilen bilgiler sınırlı kalmaktadır. Bu nedenle mümkün olduğu kadar az ve kolay elde edilebilen zemin parametreleri kullanarak, zeminlerin mühendislik özelliklerini belirleyebilmek avantajlı olacaktır. Bu çalışmada SPTN değeri ile drenajsız kayma mukavemeti (cu) arasındaki ilişkiler, Standart Penetrasyon Deneyi (SPT) düzeltmeleri ve deney tipinin etkisi dikkate alınarak, ince daneli zemin grupları için araştırılmış ve daha önce yapılan çalışmalarla karşılaştırmalar yapılmıştır. Özellikle pratikte yaygın olarak kullanılan Terzaghi ve Peck (1967) ve Stroud (1974)’in önerdiği bağıntıların, bu çalışmada bulunan bağıntılarla uyumlu olduğu gözlenirken diğer araştırmacılar tarafından önerilen bağıntıların ise oldukça yüksek sonuçlar verdikleri gözlenmiştir

Ultimate moment capacity of the reinforced concrete slab is fairly affected by high temperatures. In this study, the prediction model using neuro-fuzzy to predict the ultimate moment capacity of reinforced concrete slabs in fire is investigated. The calculated moment capacity of reinforced concrete slabs in fire is estimated by ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) model and the prediction capacity of evaluated ANFIS model is investigated. Some of obtained data set was used in the training and some of data were used in the testing phase. WOS: 000297497300002, The determination of the compaction parameters such as optimum water content (w(opt)) and maximum dry unit weight (gamma(dmax)) requires great efforts by applying the compaction testing procedure which is also time consuming and needs significant amount of work. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to use the indirect methods for estimating the compaction parameters. In recent years, the artificial neural network (ANN) modelling has gained an increasing interest and is also acquiring more popularity in geotechnical engineering applications. This study deals with the estimation of the compaction parameters for fine-grained soils based on compaction energy using ANN with the feed-forward back-propagation algorithm. In this study, the data including the results of the consistency tests, standard and modified Proctor tests, are collected from the literature and used in the analyses. The optimum structure of a network is determined for each ANN models. The analyses showed that the ANN models give quite reliable estimations in comparison with regression methods, thus they can be used as a reliable tool for the prediction of w(opt) and gamma(dmax). The addition of boron compounds into pellet mix is proposed as a potential solution to overcome the insufficient compressive strengths of preheated and fired pellets produced with organic binders. Colemanite was tested as an alternative binder to bentonite either alone or in combination with some organic binders on magnetite pellets. The performances of the tested binders on pellet qualities: balling, wet pellet moisture content, drop number, compressive strengths and microstructure of pellets have been compared with the performances of reference bentonite binders. The results of the tests showed that the qualities of pellets are insufficient when organic binders and colemanite are used as binders alone. The former failed to provide sufficient preheated and fired pellet strengths, the latter failed in terms of wet and dry pellet quality. However, good quality wet, dry, preheated and fired pellets could be produced with the combination of these two binders. In addition, stronger pellets could be produced at lower firing temperatures like 1373 K thanks to addition of colemanite. The bonding mechanism of colemanite containing pellets was examined by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the improved preheated and fired compressive strengths of colemanite-added pellets were due to the physical melting of colemanite at the contact point of magnetite grains during thermal treatment. Bentonit en çok tercih edilen silika bazlı bağlayıcıdır. Fakat bentonit, içerdiği yüksek SiO2 ve Al2O3 dolayısıyla safzılıktır. Demir üretim ekonomisi, bentonit veya diğer silika bazlı bağlayıcıların ilavesi ile olumsuz etkilenir. Son yıllarda, safsızlık içermeyen alternatif bağlayıcılar, bentonit kullanımı yerine veya bentonit kullanımını azaltmak üzere test edilmişlerdir. Organik bağlayıcılar ile yeterli yaş ve kuru pelet kalitesine sahip pelet üretilebildiği belirlenmiştir. Ancak, organik bağlayıcıların, yetersiz curuf bağlanmasından dolayı yeterli önısıtlmış ve pişirilmiş pelet dayanımı sağlamakta başarısız oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Bu yüzden organik bağlayıcılar endüstride yeterince geniş uygulama alanı bulamamışlardır.Organik bağlayıcıların kullanımı ile karşılaşılan yetersiz önısıtılmış ve pişirilmiş pelet dayanımı sorununu aşmak için pelet karışımına bor bileşikleri ilavesi potensiyel bir çözüm olarak önerilmiştir. Bazı organik bağlayıcılar ve bor bileşikleri, bentonite alternatif olarak gerek yalnız gerekse kombinasyon olarak, manyetit ve hematit peletlerinde test edilmişlerdir. Denenen alternatif bağlayıcıların; topaklanma, pelet nem içeriği, düşme sayısı, basma dayanımı, tozlanma, gözeneklilik, indirgenebilirlik, şişme ideksi, mineraloji, morfoloji ve kimyasal içerik gibi pelet kaliteleri üzerindeki performansları referans bentonit bağlayıcı performansları ile karşılaştırılmıştır.Test sonuçları, sadece organik bağlayıcı veya kalsine kolemanit içeren peletlerin yetersiz kalitede olduklarını göstermiştir. Organik bağlayıcılar; yeterli önısıtılımış ve pişirilmiş pelet dayanımı sağlamakta başarısız olurken, kalsine kolemanit, yaş ve kuru pelet kalitesi bakımından yetersiz olmuştur. Ancak, her iki bağlayıcının karışımı ile üretilen peletlerde yeterli kalitede yaş, kuru, önısıtılmış ve pişirilmiş peletler üretilebilmiştir.Organik bağlayıcılarla üretilen peletlere değişik oranlarda (%0.25-1.00) kalsine kolemanit ilavesi denenmiştir. İlave oranının artmasıyla hem önısıtılmış hem de pişirilmiş pelet dayanımları doğrusal olarak arttığı bulunmuştur. 1300oC'de pişirilmiş pelet dayanımını artırmada %0.50 kalsine kolemanit ilavesi manyetit peletlerinde aynı oranda bentonit ilavesiyle yaklaşık performans göstermiştir. Ancak, kalsine kolemanit ilavesi hematit peletlerinde dayanım artırmada daha üstün performans gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. Bunun yanında, kalsine kolemanit ilavesi ile 1100 oC gibi düşük pişirme sıcaklıklarında daha dayanıklı pelet üretilebilmiştir. Kalsine kolemanit ilavesi ile artırılan önısıtılmış ve pişirilmiş pelet dayanımlarının nedeni; kalsine kolemanitin ısıl işlem sırasında demir oksit tanecikleri temas noktalarında eriyerek fiziksel bağ yapmasıdır.Referans bentonit bağlayıcısı ile üretilen peletlerin kalsine kolemanit ilave edilen peletlere nazaran daha fazla indirgendikleri gözlenmiştir. Bu peletlerin şişme indekslerinin endüstriyel limit aralıklarında oldukları belirlenmiştir. Kimyasal ve mineralojik analiz çalışmalarıyla kombine bağlayıcı ilavesinin pelet kimyasal içeriği ve minerolojisini kirletmediği belirlenmiştir. Bentonite is the most preferred silicate-based binder in iron ore pelletizing. However, it is considered as an impurity due to its high SiO2 and Al2O3 content. The iron-making economy is adversely affected by the addition of bentonite or other silicate-based binders. In recent years, impurity-free alternative binders have been tested in order to replace bentonite or to lower the bentonite dosage. Organic binders yield good quality green and dry pellets. However, they fail to impart enough mechanical strength to the preheated and fired pellets as a result of insufficient slag bonding. During the experiments, some organic binders and boron compounds were tested as alternative binders to bentonite either alone or in combination, for both magnetite and hematite pellets. The performances of the tested binders on pellet qualities: balling, wet pellet moisture content, drop number, pellet compressive strengths (wet - dry - preheated - fired), dustiness, porosity, mineralogy, morphology, chemical contents, reducibility and swelling index have been compared with the performances of reference bentonite binder.The results of the tests showed that, the quality of pellets are insufficient when organic binders or calcined colemanite used as binder alone. The former failed to provide sufficient preheated and fired pellet strengths, the latter failed in terms of wet and dry pellet quality. However, good quality wet, dry, preheated and fired pellets could be produced with combination of these two binders.Calcined colemanite addition into pellets made with organic binders was tested in different dosages (0.25-1.00%). Results showed that with increasing dosage of calcined colemanite both strengths of preheated and fired pellets increased linearly. It was found that as low as 0.50% calcined colemanite addition equally-performed on magnetite fired magnetite pellets at 1300oC when compared with the performance of the reference bentonite binder. However, its performance was better on hematite pellets in order to improve the pellet compressive strengths. In addition, stronger pellets could be produced at lower firing temperatures like 1100oC with the addition of calcined colemanite. The reason of the improved preheated and fired compressive strengths of pellets bonded with calcined colemanite was due to the physical melting of calcined colemanite at the contact point of iron oxide grains during thermal treatment.It was found that bentonite bonded pellets fired at 1300oC were more reducible than those of produced with calcined colemanite addition. Swelling indices of these pellets were determined in the industrially acceptable limits. Tez (Doktora) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2002, Thesis (PhD) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2002, Standart Penetrasyon Deneyi (SPT) zemin incelemelerinde en sık kullanılan ve en eski arazi deneylerden biridir. Son yıllarda düzeltilmiş SPT-N değeri ile çeşitli zemin özellikleri arasında ilişkiler farklı araştırmacılar tarafından çalışılmıştır. Bu bağlamda, arazide ölçülmüş değerler üzerinde yapılan düzeltmeler, çok önemli etkenler olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu düzeltmelerde, tij uzunluğu (CR), sondaj kuyusu çapı (CB), numune alıcı kılıf (CS), çakma başlığı (CA), tokmak yastık durumu (CC), tokmak tipi ve tokmağın düşürülüş şekli (CE) etkileri göz önüne alınmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de SPT’nin uygulaması ve deneyde kullanılan aletleri belirleyerek SPT’nin profili çıkarılması ve bunun sonucunda da düzeltme faktörlerini belirlemek amacıyla geniş kapsamlı anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Böylece düzeltilmiş SPT-N değerlerin elde edilmesinde uygun (doğru) düzeltmeler kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca bu çalışma da SPT-N ile qu, cu, mv and Mc arasında korelasyonlar araştırılmış ve Türkiye’nin çeşitli bölgelerinde yapılan bir çok zemin araştırmasından elde edilen veriler üzerinde düzeltmelerin etkisinin kontrolü yapılmıştır. Anketlerin sonuçlarından Türkiye’de SPT düzeltme faktörleri olan CC=1, CB= 1, CA=0.85, CS=1.2, CE=0.75 olarak alınabilir. Ülkemizde ince daneli zeminler için tüm düzeltmeleri içeren SPT-N60=CE*CR*CS*CA*Narazi şeklini almakla beraber daha basit ve oldukça aynı sonucu veren SPT-N60=0.75*CR*Narazi kullanılabilir. SPT kullanılarak, serbest basınç mukavemeti (qu) ve drenajsız kayma mukavemeti (cu) gibi zemin özellikleri büyük bir doğrulukla belirlenebilmektedir. Bununla birlikte, hacimsel sıkışma katsayısı (mv) gibi zemin özelliklerinin belirlenmesinin doğru olmayacağı belirlenmiştir., The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is one of the oldest and the most frequently used field tests in soil exploration. In recent years several researchers attempted correlations between corrected field measured values with several soil properties. In that context corrections applied to field values have become crucial. Effects of the rod length (CR), borehole diameter (CB), liner inside sampler (CS), anvil (CA), hammer cushion (CC), type of hammer used and hammer release mechanism (CE) are considered in those corrections. In this study a questionnaire is circulated to determine the practice adopted and corrections factors in this country when performing standard penetration test and appropriate corrections are used in obtaining corrected values. In addition the aims of this study are to examine correlations between SPT-N and qu, cu, mv and to check the relevance of those corrections with regards of the data obtained from a large number of soil investigations performed in Turkey. As a result of questionnaires SPT corrections factors in Turkey can be taken as CC=1, CB= 1, CA=0.85, CS=1.2, CE=0.75. For fine-grained soils in Turkey corrected SPT-N equation is taken as SPT-N60=CE*CR*CS*CA*Nfield. However, SPT-N60=0.75*CR*Nfield equation which is simpler and gives nearly same results can be used.
