2. Identification of Chilling Injury in Kiwifruit Using Hyperspectral Structured-Illumination Reflectance Imaging System (SIRI) with Support Vector Machine (SVM) Modelling.

Abstract

Accurate detection of chilling injury in kiwifruit is challenging because the symptoms are mainly manifested in the interior. This work reports a method for detecting the chilling injury of 'Hongyang' kiwifruit to provide nondestructive discrimination. Kiwifruit samples with varying levels of chilling injury were analyzed by a hyperspectral structuredillumination reflectance imaging (SIRI) system. After demodulation, direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) images with spatial frequencies of 30, 60, and 120m-1 were obtained and labeled as F30, F60, and F120. Predictive models were developed to optimize the preprocessing and modeling methods. Prediction models established the results of DC and AC with different spatial frequencies and were compared. The autoscale-support vector machine (SVM) models were optimal for AC at different spatial frequencies, and the multiplicative scatter correction (MSC)-SVM model was optimal for DC. The combined features of F30, F60, and F120, as well as the spectral features of DC, had better accuracy for classifying chilling injury. The optimal model of hyperspectral SIRI system for detecting chilling injury was the F30 based on combined features, with calibration accuracy of 98.1% and prediction accuracy of 94.2%. This study has shown that structured illumination had higher accuracy than uniform illumination in predicting chilling injury. Further, this approach allows the identification of kiwifruit with chilling injury using a hyperspectral structured-illumination reflectance imaging system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this study, the effects of white light-emitting diode (LED) and UV-C radiation (with the same intensity) on stilbene biosynthesis and phytochemicals accumulation of peanut sprouts were investigated. Results showed that white light radiation promoted the growth of peanut sprouts while UV-C radiation had the opposite effect. Contents of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and phytochemicals significantly increased in peanut sprouts treated by white light or UV-C radiation. Besides, light radiation significantly induced stilbene accumulation by upregulating the expression of genes and enzymes in stilbene biosynthesis-related pathway, and UV-C was more effective to promote stilbene accumulation. Compared with piceid and piceatannol, resveratrol showed the highest accumulation in peanut sprouts treated by light radiation. In summary, white light or UV-C radiation could be used as a method to promote stilbene biosynthesis and phytochemicals accumulation in peanut sprouts and UV-C was more effective.

Abstract

The non-destructive method for detection of fungal contamination in peach fruit using hyperspectral imaging was evaluated. Growth characteristics of three major spoilage fungi in peach fruit during decay were estimated. Three quantitative prediction models were then constructed to forecast the microbial content from the HSI datasets. The prediction of fungal contamination on the fruit was visualized with different colors. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to reduce the dimensionality of the HSI data and to discriminate the infection degree in peaches. The results showed that partial least squares regression (PLSR) could achieve performance with Rp2 not less than 0.84in predicting fungal colony counts, while PCA scores successfully identified the infected degrees of samples. This study illustrates that HSI combined with chemometrics can potentially be implemented for the quantitative detection of fungal contamination in peach fruit.

Abstract

The effect of light radiation on stilbene induction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism of peanut sprouts were explored in this study. Firstly, different types of light sources with same intensity, including white light-emitting diode (LED), UV-A, UV-B and UV-C, were used to radiate peanuts during germination. Results showed contents of stilbenes and total phenolics were significantly promoted by light radiation and different types of stilbene compound were significantly induced in response to different types of light. Secondly, UV-C radiation was selected to treat peanuts with different intensities during germination. Results showed contents of stilbenes, total phenolics, total flavonoids, activity of antioxidant enzymes and phenylalanine ammonia-lyse (PAL) increased significantly with the increasing UV-C intensity. H2O2 showed a remarkable negative correlation with stilbenes, antioxidants, PAL, peroxidase and catalase. Contents of stilbenes and antioxidants of peanut sprouts could be increased by light radiation effectively in the germination process and the underlying inducing mechanism by UV-C radiation was involved with the mediation of oxidant-antioxidant homeostasis.
