Introduction For older individuals who developed severe mental illness (SMI) during late adolescence or early adulthood (referred to as early-acquired SMI), the combination of ageing and SMI presents persistent health and psychosocial challenges. This group, with a higher likelihood of being unmarried or experiencing marriage dissolution, often lacks social and economic resources to address the difficulties they face in later life. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the role of siblings in supporting the ageing process of individuals with early-acquired SMI. However, to date, no reviews have investigated the role of siblings in assisting their middle-aged and older brothers or sisters with SMI as they age within community settings. Our scoping review aims to explore and synthesise the existing literature on sibling support for individuals with early-acquired SMI, with the goal of informing further advancements in research, practice and policy.Methods and analysis The methodological framework developed by Arksey and O’Malley will inform this scoping review. Four groups of search keywords, derived from four related concepts (sibling, SMI, support and ageing), will be employed. Additionally, a group of keywords related to unrelated life stages and diseases will be used to exclude irrelevant articles. A search will be carried out across major online databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Ovid MEDLINE, ProQuest and Google Scholar to identify the articles between 2000 and 2023. English-language studies meeting specific eligibility criteria will be identified following a review of titles and abstracts and will then undergo a full-text review. The data from the selected articles will be extracted using a customised data-charting framework and content analysis will be conducted.Ethics and dissemination There are no requirements for ethical approval. The findings of this review will be shared through professional connections, academic conferences and scholarly journals.

Cinnamomum burmannii is a cinnamomum plant rich in natural D-borneol. Natural D-borneol is a bicycle monoterpenoid compound widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Therefore, analyzing the biosynthesis mechanism of natural D-borneol in C. burmannii at the molecular level is helpful for directional breeding in the future and further development and utilization of C. burmannii and its related gene resources. In our study, 76 genes related to terpene metabolism were analyzed through third-generation sequencing and second-generation sequencing. Of these genes, 57 were associated with the synthesis of the terpenoid skeleton, and 19 belonged to terpenoid synthase, including four monoterpenoid synthases, seven sesquiterpenoid synthases, and eight diterpenoid synthases. Two genes in diterpenoid synthase were differentially expressed in high D-borneol and low D-borneol plants. It was speculated that these two genes might be related to D-borneol synthesis. How these two genes participate in the synthesis of D-borneol needs further study.

BackgroundCurrently, there are no FDA approved therapies for persistent post-traumatic headache (PPTH) secondary to traumatic brain injury (TBI). As such neither headache nor TBI specialists have an effective means to manage PPTH. Thus, the objective of the present pilot trial was to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a four-week at-home remotely supervised transcranial direct current stimulation (RS-tDCS) intervention for veterans with PPTH.MethodsTwenty-five (m = 46.6 ± 8.7 years) veterans with PPTH were randomized into two groups and received either active (n = 12) or sham (n = 13) RS-tDCS, with anodal stimulation over left dlPFC and cathodal over occipital pole. Following a four-week baseline, participants completed 20–sessions of active or sham RS-tDCS with real-time video monitoring over a period of four-weeks. Participants were assessed again at the end of the intervention and at four-weeks post-intervention. Primary outcomes were overall adherence rate (feasibility) and change in moderate-to-severe headache days per month (efficacy). Secondary outcomes were changes in total number of headache days, and PPTH-related functional outcomes.ResultsAdherence rate was high with 88% of participants (active = 10/12; sham = 12/13) fully completing tDCS interventions. Importantly, there was no significant difference in adherence between active and sham groups (p = 0.59). Moderate-to-severe headache days were significantly reduced within the active RS-tDCS group (p = 0.004), compared to sham during treatment (−2.5 ± 3.5 vs. 2.3 ± 3.4), and 4-week follow-up (−3.9 ± 6.4 vs. 1.2 ± 6.5). Total number of headache days was significantly reduced within the active RS-tDCS (p = 0.03), compared to sham during-treatment (−4.0 ± 5.2 vs. 1.5 ± 3.8), and 4-week follow-up (−2.1 ± 7.2 vs. −0.2 ± 4.4).ConclusionThe current results indicate our RS-tDCS paradigm provides a safe and effective means for reducing the severity and number of headache days in veterans with PPTH. High treatment adherence rate and the remote nature of our paradigm indicate RS-tDCS may be a feasible means to reduce PPTH, especially for veterans with limited access to medical facilities.Clinical Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier [NCT04012853].

In this study, SiC particle (SICP)- and SiC whisker (SICW)-reinforced Cu composites were prepared by pulse intermittent deposition and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS). After electrodeposition, the formation of Cu-coated SICP and SICW core–shell structures solved the problem of agglomeration of the second phase during the subsequent sintering. In addition, the wetting layer of Cu increased the bonding strength of the interface between Cu and the second phase. The strength of SICP-reinforced Cu was higher than that of pure Cu at the expense of elongation and thermal conductivity. Compared to SICP-reinforced Cu, SICW-reinforced Cu exhibits significantly higher strength, plasticity and thermal conductivity. The externally applied load was transferred from a soft Cu matrix to stiff SICWs, thus increasing the yield strength of the composites. Furthermore, bridge cracks, crack deflection, and whisker pull-out mechanisms improved the elongation of the composite. This work reveals the relevance of the strengthening mechanism and the aspect ratio of the reinforced phase systematically and provides an advanced pathway to fabricate high-performance metal–matrix composites by designing discontinuous second phases with tailored aspect ratios.

The hypoxia inducible factor (Hif) pathway is functionally conserved across metazoans in modulating cellular adaptations to hypoxia. However, the functions of this pathway under aerobic physiological conditions are rarely investigated. Here, we show that Hif-1α2, a locust Hif-1α isoform, does not induce canonical hypoxic responses but functions as a specific regulator of locust flight, which is a completely aerobic physiological process. Two Hif-1α splice variants were identified in locusts, a ubiquitously expressed Hif-1α1 and a muscle-predominantly expressed Hif-1α2. Hif-1α1 that induces typical hypoxic responses upon hypoxia exposure remains inactive during flight. By contrast, the expression of Hif-1α2, which lacks C-terminal transactivation domain, is less sensitive to oxygen tension but induced extensively by flying. Hif-1α2 regulates physiological processes involved in glucose metabolism and antioxidation during flight and sustains flight endurance by maintaining redox homeostasis through upregulating the production of a reactive oxygen species (ROS) quencher, DJ-1. Overall, this study reveals a novel Hif-mediated mechanism underlying prolonged aerobic physiological activity.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2019, millions of people have been infected with the disease. The COVID-19 pandemic also produced severe mental health problems, such as loneliness and depression. The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of cognitive reappraisal and moderating role of resilience in the relationship between young adults’ loneliness and depression during the pandemic by adopting a cross-sectional research approach. In March 2020, 654 young adults (18–29 years old) were recruited to complete the measures for loneliness, depression, emotion regulation, and resilience. Results found that loneliness was positively and moderately associated with depression (r = 0.531, p < 0.001), and that both loneliness and depression were separately negatively associated with cognitive reappraisal (r = −0.348, p < 0.001; r = −0.424, p < 0.001) and resilience (r = −0.436, p < 0.001; r = −0.419, p < 0.001). The results indicated that both loneliness and depression were not associated with expressive suppression (r = 0.067, p = 0.087; r = −0.002, p = 0.961). The moderated mediation model results revealed that only cognitive reappraisal partially mediated the relationship between loneliness and depression (b = −0.301; Boot 95% CI = −0.388, −0.215). In addition, the results of the moderated mediation model indicated that resilience moderated the association between loneliness and depression (b = 0.035, p < 0.001, Boot 95% CI = 0.014, 0.055), while also moderated the impact of cognitive reappraisal on depression (b = −0.031, p < 0.001, Boot 95% CI = −0.058, −0.005). These findings have practical implications that broaden our understanding of depression in young adults and shed light on how to enhance cognitive reappraisal and resilience as a means of combating depression in this age group during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In recent years, the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, irregular closed school life and frequent online teaching have negatively impacted the mental health and academic performance of many college students. Doing horticultural activities is an effective way to promote physical and mental health and enhance academic performance. This paper explores the relationship between horticultural activities participation, academic self-efficacy and positive mental characters under the perspective of disciplinary integration, with a view to promoting the mental health status and academic performance of college students and the application of horticultural therapy on college campuses. Questionnaires such as the Positive Mental Characters Scale for Chinese College Students (PMCS-CCS) and Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES) are used to investigate 160 college students from four universities in China. The results show that horticultural activity participation is significantly positively correlated with academic self-efficacy (r = 0.345; p < 0.01) and positive mental characters (r = 0.298; p < 0.01), and horticultural activity participation can positively affect positive mental characters (B = 0.135, p < 0.01). At the same time, academic self-efficacy has a partial mediating effect between horticultural activity participation and positive mental characters. Universities can actively carry out campus horticultural activities to enhance students’ horticultural activity participation, which in turn promotes academic self-efficacy and further enhances the positive psychological level of college students.

Abstract Background Non-Drosophila insects provide diverse aging types and important complementary systems for studies of aging biology. However, little attention has been paid to the special roles of non-Drosophila insects in aging research. Here, the aging-related features of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, were determined at the physiological, cellular, and transcriptional levels. Results In physiological assessments, the flight performance and sperm state of locusts displayed clear aging-related decline in male adults. Transcriptional analyses demonstrated locusts have similar aging-related genes with model species. However, different from those of Drosophila and mammals, the organ-specific aging transcriptional features of locusts were characterized by intensive expression changes in flight muscle and fat body and little transcriptional changes in brain. The predominant transcriptional characteristics of flight muscle and fat body aging were changes in expression of mitochondrion-related genes and detoxification and phagocytosis genes, respectively. Cellular assessments revealed the incidence of mitochondrial abnormalities significantly increased in aged flight muscle, and apoptotic signals and nuclear abnormalities were enhanced in aged fat body but not in brain. In addition, some well-known aging genes and locust aging-related genes (i.e., IAP1, PGRP-SA, and LIPT1), whose roles in aging regulation were rarely reported, were demonstrated to affect lifespan, metabolism, and flight ability of locusts after RNAi. Conclusion This study revealed multi-level aging signatures of locust, thus laying a foundation for further investigation of aging mechanisms in this famous insect in the future.

Reproductive synchrony generally occurs in various group-living animals. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. The migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, a worldwide agricultural pest species, displays synchronous maturation and oviposition when forms huge swarm. The reproductive synchrony among group members is critical for the maintenance of locust swarms and population density of next generation. Here, we showed that gregarious female locusts displayed more synchronous sexual maturation and oviposition than solitarious females and olfactory deficiency mutants. Only the presence of gregarious male adults can stimulate sexual maturation synchrony of female adults. Of the volatiles emitted abundantly by gregarious male adults, the aggregation pheromone, 4-vinylanisole, was identified to play key role in inducing female sexual maturation synchrony. This maturation-accelerating effect of 4-vinylanisole disappeared in the females of Or35-/- lines, the mutants of 4-vinylanisole receptor. Interestingly, 4-vinylanisole displayed a time window action by which mainly accelerates oocyte maturation of young females aged at middle developmental stages (3–4 days post adult eclosion). We further revealed that juvenile hormone/vitellogenin pathway mediated female sexual maturation triggered by 4-vinylanisole. Our results highlight a ‘catch-up’ strategy by which gregarious females synchronize their oocyte maturation and oviposition by time-dependent endocrinal response to 4-vinylanisole, and provide insight into reproductive synchrony induced by olfactory signal released by heterosexual conspecifics in a given group.

Abstract Importance Pulmonary mucormycosis is life threatening and carries a poor prognosis. Identification of factors that improve prognosis is urgently necessary. Objective To analyze the clinical features and outcomes of pulmonary mucormycosis in children. Methods A retrospective analysis of clinical data of four cases with pulmonary mucormycosis was conducted in Beijing Children's Hospital from January 2017 to December 2018. Results Underlying diseases were identified in all four cases (diabetes in three individuals and a hematological malignancy in one individual). The predominant clinical manifestations were fever, cough, chest pain and hemoptysis. Imaging features included consolidation or nodules with cavities. All four cases were treated with liposomal amphotericin B, one case underwent lobectomy, and three cases received a full course of posaconazole. All four cases were cured. Interpretation Patients with pulmonary mucormycosis often have underlying diseases. Imaging features are relatively characteristic. Treatment with liposomal amphotericin B at an early stage and a sufficient course of posaconazole for maintenance significantly improves prognosis.

Phenological asynchrony is a common and important natural phenomenon that affects interspecific interaction, resource allocation, species survival, and range shift in sympatric species. However, the underpinnings for regulating phenological asynchrony at physiological and molecular levels remains less explored. We investigated the seasonal pattern of emergence period and abundance in three dominant grasshopper species, namely, Dasyhipus barbipes, Oedalus asiaticus, and Chorthippus dubius, which occur sympatrically in the Inner Mongolian steppe. The three grasshopper species decoupled their population occurrence phenology that occurred in a growing season between May and September and diverged into early, middle, and late seasonal species. We also examined the association of embryonic diapause and heat shock protein (Hsp) expression with phenological asynchrony in the three species. The species developed different embryonic diapause programs, i.e., obligate diapause, facultative diapause, and non-diapause, to control the timing of egg hatching and seasonality of population occurrence. The diapausing eggs exhibited significantly enhanced supercooling capacity compared with pre- and post-diapausing eggs. Gene expression analysis in the developmental process revealed that three Hsps, e.g., Hsp20.6, Hsp40, and Hsp90, were significantly upregulated in diapause state relative to that in pre- and post-diapause states; expression of these genes seems to be associated with the diapause program regulation. This study provides a possible mechanistic explanation for phenological differentiation among sympatric species in a typical steppe habitat and establishes a potential linkage among phenological asynchrony, diapause, and Hsp gene expression. The findings will facilitate our prediction of population dynamics and pest management.

Long-term flight depends heavily on intensive energy metabolism in animals; however, the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying efficient substrate utilization remain elusive. Here, we report that the adipokinetic hormone/corazonin-related peptide (ACP) can facilitate muscle lipid utilization in a famous long-term migratory flighting species, Locusta migratoria. By peptidomic analysis and RNAi screening, we identified brain-derived ACP as a key flight-related neuropeptide. ACP gene expression increased notably upon sustained flight. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout of ACP gene and ACP receptor gene (ACPR) significantly abated prolonged flight of locusts. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses further revealed that genes and metabolites involved in fatty acid transport and oxidation were notably downregulated in the flight muscle of ACP mutants. Finally, we demonstrated that a fatty-acid-binding protein (FABP) mediated the effects of ACP in regulating muscle lipid metabolism during long-term flight in locusts. Our results elucidated a previously undescribed neuroendocrine mechanism underlying efficient energy utilization associated with long-term flight.

To achieve low-carbon and sustainable development it is imperative to explore water treatment technologies in a carbon-neutral model. Because of its advantages of high efficiency, low consumption, and no secondary pollution, electrocatalytic oxidation technology has attracted increasing attention in tackling the challenges of organic wastewater treatment. The performance of an electrocatalytic oxidation system depends mainly on the properties of electrodes materials. Compared with the instability of graphite electrodes, the high expenditure of noble metal electrodes and boron-doped diamond electrodes, and the hidden dangers of titanium-based metal oxide electrodes, a titanium sub-oxide material has been characterized as an ideal choice of anode material due to its unique crystal and electronic structure, including high conductivity, decent catalytic activity, intense physical and chemical stability, corrosion resistance, low cost, and long service life, etc. This paper systematically reviews the electrode preparation technology of Magnéli phase titanium sub-oxide and its research progress in the electrochemical advanced oxidation treatment of organic wastewater in recent years, with technical difficulties highlighted. Future research directions are further proposed in process optimization, material modification, and application expansion. It is worth noting that Magnéli phase titanium sub-oxides have played very important roles in organic degradation. There is no doubt that titanium sub-oxides will become indispensable materials in the future.

Aging is the leading risk factor of human chronic diseases. Understanding of aging process and mechanisms facilitates drug development and the prevention of aging-related diseases. Although many aging studies focus on fruit fly as a canonical insect system, minimal attention is paid to the potentially significant roles of other insects in aging research. As the most diverse group of animals, insects provide many aging types and important complementary systems for aging studies. Insect polyphenism represents a striking example of the natural variation in longevity and aging rate. The extreme intraspecific variations in the lifespan of social insects offer an opportunity to study how aging is differentially regulated by social factors. Insect flight, as an extremely high-intensity physical activity, is suitable for the investigation of the complex relationship between metabolic rate, oxidative stress, and aging. Moreover, as a “non-aging” state, insect diapause not only slows aging process during diapause phase but also affects adult longevity during/after diapause. In the past two decades, considerable progress has been made in understanding the molecular basis of aging regulation in insects. Herein, the recent research progress in non-Drosophila insect aging was reviewed, and its potential utilization in aging in the future was discussed.

This study introduces the mathematical model of a new type of power system stabiliser PSS4B-W. The concept of crossbreed in genetic algorithm is introduced to particle swarm optimisation algorithm and applied to PSS4B-W parameter optimisation. With a PCS-9410 excitation regulator, the semi-physical simulation system is constituted on a real time digital simulator (RTDS) platform. By measuring the excitation system phase frequency characteristic without compensation, the PSS4B-W parameter optimisation is converted to a set of parameters optimisation process with inequality constraint. In the RTDS platform, the time-domain dynamic response of without PSS, adding PSS2B and PSS4B-W, is compared and analysed. Simulation results show that the optimised PSS4B-W can provide effective damping in different frequency bands, and have good inverse-regulation suppression effect.

The modified multiple platform method (MMPM) is a classical sleep deprivation model. It has been widely used in behavioral and brain research, due to its effects on physical and mental functions. However, different MMPM protocols can promote distinct effects in rats. Although the MMPM has been proved to induce central fatigue, the effects of different durations of subjection to the MMPM remain undetermined. This study aims to investigate the changes in behavior, N-Methyl-d-Aspartate receptor 1 (NR1) and 2A (NR2A), as well as the ultrastructural alteration in the hippocampus after different MMPM modelling, to compare the central fatigue effect induced by dynamic MMPM. Rats were randomly divided into four groups: 5-, 14- and 21- day MMPM groups, and a control group. Each MMPM group underwent a 14-hour daily MMPM modelling. After each training session, open field and elevated plus maze tests were performed. Corticosterone levels were detected by ELISA, and the hippocampal NR1 and NR2A were measured by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. In addition, ultrastructural changes in the hippocampal cornu ammonis 1(CA1) region were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The findings showed that the 5 and 14 days of MMPM induced a high-stress state, while the 21 days of MMPM induced anxiety and degenerative alteration in the hippocampal morphology. Additionally, hippocampal NR1 and NR2A gene expression decreased in all MMPM groups, whereas the protein expression only decreased in the 21-day group. Overall, different durations of MMPM caused distinct behavioral and brain changes, and the 21 days of MMPM could induce central fatigue.
