Colorism is an important determiner of life outcomes among Black people. Yet, we know little about how it impacts socioeconomic conditions outside the United States. This study expands the existing literature on intraracial stratification by using Jamaica as a case example. Drawing on data from the 2010 and 2023 waves of the AmericasBarometer social survey, I examine the impacts of colorism on two key indicators of socioeconomic status. Although colorism is often regulated as a “public secret,” findings reveal that it is a significant determinant of socioeconomic outcomes. And while the penalty of skin color has lessened in 2023 for tertiary education and household amenities, it remains for incomplete primary education. Findings thus: (1) provide empirical evidence of the continued significance of colorism within Jamaica, (2) expand the extant literature, and (3) highlight the need for the consideration of “racial” inequality in fostering equity, even in majority African-descended nations. It is important to have a diverse workforce in clinical and research environments. A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the possible presence of gender, perceived skin color, education, academic productivity, and career progression inequalities among neurosurgeons in the United Kingdom. A list of all consultant neurosurgeons working in the United Kingdom (N = 384) was obtained from the Specialist Info website. Data about their education, research activity, academic productivity, impact, and progression were obtained from publicly available online sources. Over 90% of consultants and all full professors were men. There was a small number of black or brown consultant neurosurgeons and no black full professors. Very few black or brown consultants obtained their medical degree from a top university or had a PhD. There were no gender disparities in currently being affiliated with a university (or top university), obtaining a PhD or Master's degree, ranking of the university from which they obtained their medical degree, Master's degree or PhD, or number of pages and open access availability of their PhD thesis. Neurosurgeons who obtained their medical degree from the UK and those with a PhD had more publications, citations and a higher h-index. Male (vs. female) academic neurosurgeons had more publications, nonself-citations, and a higher h-index, and white (vs. brown) female neurosurgeons had more citations per paper. In this paper, we examine the centrality of mestizo people in the Mexican national political and social project of mestizaje. We argue that mestizos are far from homogenous, and that exploring their socio-economic and cultural differences sheds light on how racial hierarchies operate in contexts of mestizaje. Using data from the Project for Ethnicity and Race in Latin America (PERLA), we (1) uncover the heterogeneity of the mestizo population in terms of Indigenous background; (2) show how skin color and place of residence predicts membership of different subgroups within the mestizo population that vary in terms of their Indigenous affiliations, and (3) reveal educational and socio-economic inequality within the mestizo population based on individuals' Indigenous affiliations and skin color. We provide a nuanced understanding of how anti-indigenous and anti-black racism conflate in contexts where racial mixing is part of the ideology and daily practices of social life. Patients who undergo transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) may become pale during the early postoperative period. To clarify whether facial colors changed during the postoperative period, patients' skin color from before to 72 h after TAVI was measured spectrophotometrically. Factors associated with skin color were also investigated. Forehead skin color and vital signs were measured before TAVI and at 6, 18, and 72 h after TAVI in 11 patients scheduled for TAVI. Blood examinations were performed before and 18 and 72 h after TAVI. Skin color was assessed using a spectrophotometer and expressed as L* (lightness), a* (red/green), and b* (yellow/blue) according to the CIE1976L*a*b* color space. Skin lightness L* values increased at 6 and 18 h after TAVI and returned at 72 h after TAVI and a* values decreased at 6 h after TAVI. The b* values did not change perioperatively during TAVI. No associations were observed between the changes in skin color and changes in BP or laboratory data. The findings that the skin color became whitish and less reddish in the early postoperative period resembled that occurring during an acute inflammatory response. Sex-typicality displayed as sexual dimorphism of the human face is a key feature enabling sex recognition. It is also believed to be a cue for perceiving biological quality and it plays an important role in the perception of attractiveness. Sexual dimorphism of human faces has two main components: sexual shape dimorphism of various facial features and sexual color dimorphism, generally manifested as dimorphism of skin luminance, where men tend to be darker than women. However, very little is known about the mutual relationship of these two facets. We explored the interconnection between the dimorphism of face shape and dimorphism of face color in three visually distinct populations (Cameroonian, Czech, and Vietnamese). Our results indicated that populations which showed a significant dimorphism in skin luminance (Cameroon, Vietnam) had low levels of sexual shape dimorphism, while a population with higher levels of sexual shape dimorphism (Czech Republic) did not exhibit a significant dimorphism of skin luminance. These findings suggest a possible compensatory mechanism between various domains of sexual dimorphism in populations differing in the levels of shape and color dimorphism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Our goal was to investigate linkages between skin color parameters and skin hydration. Since most prior studies focused on stratum corneum hydration, we focused on epidermal and dermal hydration in relation to skin color parameters in both sexes. Materials and Methods: Thirty adults (16 female) with an age ± SD of 24.3 ± 0.6 years participated. Three sites on both volar forearms were evaluated for melanin index (MI), erythema index (EI), Individual Typology Angle (ITA), tissue dielectric constant (TDC) values to depths of 0.5 mm (TDC0.5) and 2.5 mm (TDC2.5), and Fitzpatrick skin type (FST). Results: MI and EI were highly correlated (r = 0.800, p < 0.001) with maximum differences in MI and ITA along the arm of 3% and 6.3% with no difference between arms. Male MI was greater than females (p < 0.01). Male TDC2.5 was 36.1 ± 5.4 and correlated with EI (r = 0.231, p = 0.035). Contrastingly, female TDC25 was 28.5 ± 3.6 with no correlation with EI but was correlated with MI (r = −0.301, p = 0.003). These differential patterns held true for TDC0.5. For both sexes, FST and ITA were highly correlated (r = −0.756, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings revealed several correlations between skin color parameters and hydration that differed between males in females in some cases. The observed correlations may indicate that melanin may differentially impact water‐holding capacity between sexes and provides a future research target. Further, these initial findings also may hold significance for dermatological assessments and the customization of skincare treatments tailored to individual skin types and demographics. Opsins are a class of transmembrane proteins encoded by opsin genes, and they play a variety of functional roles. Short wavelength-sensitive opsin 2 (sws2), one of the five classes of visual opsin genes, mainly senses blue light. Previous research has indicated that sws2 is essential for melanocyte formation in fish; however, its specific role in skin color differentiation remains to be elucidated. Here, we identified the sws2 gene in a prized reef-dwelling fish, Plectropomus leopardus. The full-length P. leopardus sws2 gene encodes a protein consisting of 351 amino acids, and exhibits substantial homology with other fish species. The expression of the sws2 gene was widespread across P. leopardus tissues, with high expression in eye and skin tissues. Through immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization analyses, we discovered that the sws2 gene was primarily localized in the rod and cone cells of the retina, and epidermal cells of the skin. Furthermore, dsRNA interference was used for sws2 gene knockdown in living P. leopardus to elucidate its function in skin color differentiation. Black-color-related genes, melanin contents, and tyrosinase activity in the skin significantly decreased after sws2 knockdown (p < 0.05), but red-color-related genes and carotenoid and lutein contents significantly increased (p < 0.05). Retinoic acid injection produced the opposite results. Our results suggested that the sws2 gene influences P. leopardus skin color regulation by affecting vitamin synthesis and melanin-related gene expression levels. SUMMARY: Skin color is an important trait that determines the cosmetic appearance and quality of fruits. In cucumber, the skin color ranges from white to brown in mature fruits. However, the genetic basis for this important trait remains unclear. We conducted a genome‐wide association study of natural cucumber populations, along with map‐based cloning techniques, on an F2 population resulting from a cross between Pepino (with yellow‐brown fruit skin) and Zaoer‐N (with creamy fruit skin). We identified CsMYB60 as a candidate gene responsible for skin coloration in mature cucumber fruits. In cucumber accessions with white to pale yellow skin color, a premature stop mutation (C to T) was found in the second exon region of CsMYB60, whereas light yellow cucumber accessions exhibited splicing premature termination caused by an intronic mutator‐like element insertion in CsMYB60. Transgenic CsMYB60c cucumber plants displayed a yellow‐brown skin color by promoting accumulation of flavonoids, especially hyperoside, a yellow‐colored flavonol. CsMYB60c encodes a nuclear protein that primarily acts as a transcriptional activator through its C‐terminal activation motif. RNA sequencing and DNA affinity purification sequencing assays revealed that CsMYB60c promotes skin coloration by directly binding to the YYTACCTAMYT motif in the promoter regions of flavonoid biosynthetic genes, including CsF3′H, which encodes flavonoid 3′‐hydroxylase. The findings of our study not only offer insight into the function of CsMYB60 as dominantly controlling fruit coloration, but also highlight that intronic DNA mutations can have a similar phenotypic impact as exonic mutations, which may be valuable in future cucumber breeding programs. Significance Statement: Genome‐wide association study and map‐based cloning revealed that CsMYB60 regulates mature cucumber fruit skin coloring, which is promising for cucumber breeding. Measurement of transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) is a non-invasive, widely used technique to estimate serum bilirubin (SB). However, its reliability in multiethnic populations during and after phototherapy is still controversial even in covered skin. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability of TcB in covered (cTcB) and exposed (eTcB) skin during and after phototherapy in a multiethnic population of term and preterm neonates according to Neomar's neonatal skin color scale. Prospective, observational study comparing SB and TcB. We determined SB when clinically indicated and, at the same time, measured cTcB under a photo-opaque patch and eTcB next to it with a jaundice meter (Dräger JM-105TM). All dyads TcB-SB were compared, both globally and according to skin color. We obtained data from 200 newborns (color1: 44, color2: 111, color3: 41, color4: 4) and compared 296 dyads TcB/SB. Correlation between cTcB and SB is strong during (0.74–0.83) and after (0.79–0.88) phototherapy, both globally and by color group. The SB-cTcB bias depends on gestational age during phototherapy and on skin color following phototherapy. The correlation between eTcB and SB during phototherapy is not strong (0.54), but becomes so 12 h after discontinuing phototherapy (0.78). Conclusions: Our study supports the reliability of cTcB to assess SB during and after phototherapy, with differences among skin tones after the treatment. The use of cTcB and Neomar's scale during and mainly after phototherapy may help reduce the number of blood samples required. What is Known: • Controversies exist on the reliability of jaundice meters during and after phototherapy in covered skin. Only a few studies have analyzed their accuracy in multiethnic populations, but none has used a validated neonatal skin color scale. In Brazil, ethnic-racial inequalities exist in all fields, obstructing access to goods, services, and opportunities, including healthcare services. However, there are no apparent studies that assess, at a national level, ethnic-racial disparities in poisoning cases, emphasizing skin color as a determining factor. The study aimed to examine the relationship between race/ethnicity and general poisoning cases, by medications, pesticides, and drug of abuse in Brazilian states. Poisoning cases data were extracted for the years 2017, 2018, and 2019. Notification data for general poisoning cases and toxic agents were collected: medications, pesticides, and drugs of abuse. Data were categorized between whites and non-whites (blacks, browns, and indigenous) and without information on skin color/ethnicity. Rates of poisonings amongst ethnic-racial groups and cases of not declared skin color as well as relative risk (RR) of poisoning among non-whites were calculated. All states in the North, Northeast (states with the worst Human Development Index), Midwest, and 2 states in the Southeast exhibited higher rates of poisoning cases per 100,000 inhabitants among non-whites. The RR values for nonwhite individuals were higher in the North and Northeast regions for all types of poisonings. The type of poisoning cases that presented the highest RR for non-whites over the 3 years was drugs of abuse (2–2.44), when compared to other types of poisonings from pesticides (2–2.33) and medications (1.5–1.91). The spatial distribution of poisoning cases rates and RR of nonwhite population support public policies to reduce socioeconomic and environmental inequalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies of colorism—the idea that racial hierarchies coexist with gradational inequalities based on skin color—consistently find that darker skin correlates with lower socioeconomic outcomes. Despite the causal nature of this debate, evidence remains predominantly associational. This study revisits the colorism literature by proposing a causal model underlying these theories. It discusses conditions under which associations may reflect contemporary causal effects of skin color and evaluates strategies for identifying these effects. Using data from the AddHealth and NLSY97 surveys and applying two identification strategies, the study estimates the causal effects of skin color on college degree attainment, personal earnings, and family income among White, Black, and Hispanic populations in the United States. Results show that darker skin correlates with poorer educational and economic outcomes within racial groups. However, evidence of contemporary causal effects of skin color is partial, limited to college attainment of Whites and family income of Hispanics. For Blacks, results suggest a generalized penalty associated with being Black rather than gradation based on skin tone. Methodologically, the article advocates using sensitivity analyses to account for unobserved confounders in models for skin color effects and uses sibling fixed-effects as a secondary complementary strategy.

This research article is the result of the doctoral thesis on the construction of racial identity in black children in Colombia; to experiment with the self-application of body tones, it used child drawing as a narrative of the first order that allowed identifying patterns through the representation of the body. Here the school emerges with force, since it is the place where the skin, flesh or natural color is used as a prototype when painting the human body, so that it is a device deeply rooted in school culture. Methodologically, the researcher constructed a spontaneous qualitative-based experiment to demonstrate that through the use of skin color black children create a strong contradiction in their identity process. As a fragment of the thesis, this article recounts the findings of a case study, given that most of the faces of black childhoods were painted skin-colored, then urgent action must be taken to establish the consequences for a healthy racial consciousness.

Abstract Background and Objective The most frequently seen intra-oral soft tissue is the gingiva. Most often, it is seen as coral-pink tissue that surrounds the neck of the teeth. Gingiva that encircles the tooth necks and covers the alveolar processes of the jaws is an intra-oral tissue that exhibits biomimetic features. The wide range of colors of the gingiva depends on the configuration of gingival vascularity, the degree of epithelial cornification, level of melanogenesis, and the depth of epithelialization. However, the color of the gingiva varies depending on the degree of melanin pigmentation. The current study aimed to identify the different distribution patterns of gingival color and determine the correlation between skin color, gender, and geographical area of origin. Materials and methods A total of 839 subjects were involved in the study where the gingival color and skin tone were measured using the Dummett-Gupta Oral pigmentation Index (DOPI) combined with VITA VMK MASTER and skin shade method developed by Revlon (USA) and L’Oreal (France) for makeup foundation shades. One investigator was calibrated for the examination of the colors after being tested for normal color vision and color aptitude using the line test. Results A significant association was found between skin color and gingival pigmentation (χ2 value (6) = 114.48; P = 0.001). It was also found that females (67.1%) significantly had darker gingiva than males (58.3%). The study statistics display that location of the individual was also statistically associated with melanin pigmentation of the gingiva (χ2 value (57) = 559.33; P = 0.001). Conclusion The study concluded that gender, skin color, and individual location are significantly associated with gingival melanin pigmentation.

Fruit skin color is an important trait of the hawthorn tree, which has an important influence on fruit quality. Crataegus pinnatifida Bge. var. Major N.E.Br. Is one of the most widely cultivated varieties in China and has a long history of medicinal use. In recent years, it has attracted the attention of the world due to its nutritional and medicinal values. Skin color is the focus of breeders and food processors. At present, skin color-related genes have still not been mapped. In this study, "Shandong Da Mianqiu" (\, red skin color), "Da Huang Mianzha" (_, yellow skin color) and 131 F1 hybrids were used to construct genetic map of hawthorn by RAD-seq, and QTL mapping was performed by combining these features with the hue angle and the observed color. In this study, 13,260 SNP was assigned to 17 linkage groups, with an integrated map covering 2,297.75 cM was constructed. A total of 5 QTLs related to hawthorn skin color were detected on LG1, LG3 and LG15. Whether hue angle or pericarp color acts as phenotype for QTL mapping, the candidate genes include bHLH086, WD repeat regions and Myb-like. bHLH, WDand Myb play an important role in the color regulation of Hawthorn skin color. To study the effects of dietary lutein and lutein derivatives on the skin color, tissue pigment content, and antioxidant capacity of yellow-feathered broilers, four hundred and thirty-two 37-day-old Sanhuang broilers were randomly divided into four groups with six replicates in each group and 18 chickens in each replicate. The control group was fed with wheat-soybean meal basal diet, and each experimental group was fed with lutein 40 mg/kg (lutein group), lutein 24 mg/kg and lutein derivative 16 mg/kg (lutein + lutein derivative group), lutein derivative 40 mg/kg (lutein derivative group). The trial period was 28 days. The results showed that the yellowness values of beak, shin, and underwing skin of broilers in each experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). The total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the serum of broilers in each experimental group was significantly increased (P<0.05), and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the liver was increased (P>0.05). Serum cholesterol (TC) content of broilers in each experimental group increased significantly (P<0.05). The expression of GPR143 gene in subwing skin of broilers decreased significantly (P<0.05). The results show that lutein and lutein derivatives can improve the chromaticity of broiler skin and the antioxidant capacity of broiler body, and have no adverse effect on broiler liver. The partial replacement of lutein derivatives (16 mg/kg) cannot affect the coloring effect and antioxidant effect of lutein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Skin color shift in side view of UV2A mode is a challenging problem since the dark line is wider than other VA mode. In this paper, several factors such as various methods for 8 domain driving, resistant ratio and area ratio of sub to main pixel were fully discussed. Finally, novel pixel design was proposed in this paper with CR (80/20) =50% (θ=30°, φ=0°) which is 25% higher than traditional UV2A mode. Carotenoid-dependent ornaments can reflect animals' diet and foraging behaviors. However, this association should be spatially flexible and variable among populations to account for geographic variation in optimal foraging behaviors. We tested this hypothesis using populations of a marine predator (the brown booby, Sula leucogaster) that forage across a gradient in ocean depth in and near the Gulf of California. Specifically, we quantified green chroma for two skin traits (foot and gular color) and their relationship to foraging location and diet of males, as measured via global positioning system tracking and stable carbon isotope analysis of blood plasma. Our three focal colonies varied in which foraging attributes were linked to carotenoid-rich ornaments. For gular skin, our data showed a shift from a benthic prey-green skin association in the shallow waters in the north to a pelagic prey-green skin association in the deepest waters to the south. Mean foraging trip duration and distance of foraging site from coast also predicted skin coloration in some colonies. Finally, brown booby colonies varied in which trait (foot versus gular skin color) was associated with foraging metrics. Overall, our results indicate that male ornaments reflect quality of diet and foraging–information that may help females select mates who are adapted to local foraging conditions and therefore, are likely to provide better parental care. More broadly, our results stress that diet-dependent ornaments are closely linked to animals' environments and that we cannot assume ornaments or ornament signal content are ubiquitous within species, even when ornaments appear similar among populations. Background/Objectives: Skin color is innately determined by race and other genetic factors, and it also undergoes acquired changes due to various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Previous studies on skin color have mainly focused on the face, and research has recently expanded to other body parts. However, there is limited information about the age-dependent changes in the skin color of these body parts. The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences in skin color between various body parts and the changes in skin color of each body part with age. Methods: This study examined the skin color of 53 Korean women subjects evenly distributed in age from the 20s to 60s on several body parts: forearm, upper arm, elbow (extended or folded), knee (extended or folded), thigh, and shin. The lightness (L*), redness (a*), and yellowness (b*) were measured using a spectrophotometer, and the individual typology angle (ITA°) was calculated from the L* and b* values. The melanin index and erythema index were measured using the mexameter. Results: The results showed that the elbow skin had the lowest L* and ITA° values and the highest a* and b* values among the examined body parts, followed by the knee. The melanin index and erythema index were also high in the skin of these body parts. In the analysis of age-dependent changes in the skin color of various body parts, the forearm skin exhibited the most notable decrease in the L* and ITA° values and increases in the a* and b* values, followed by upper-arm skin. The melanin and erythema indices in the forearm also increased as the subjects aged, whereas those in the elbow and knee rather decreased with age. Conclusions: This study suggests that differences in intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging in various body parts may be expressed as different changes in skin color and raises the need for cosmetic and dermatological research to identify the physiological significance of these changes. Objectives: Discrimination is an urgent public health problem. A number of major cities and counties across the United States has declared racism a public health crisis. While there is a growing body of research on the discrimination-health connection, less is known regarding the social relational consequences of discrimination. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by investigating the relationship between discrimination, skin tone, and objective and subjective social isolation using a nationally representative sample of African Americans.Method: This analysis was based upon the African American subsample (N = 3,570) of the National Survey of American Life. Discrimination was assessed with the Everyday Discrimination Scale. Objective and subjective isolation differentiated between respondents who were (a) socially isolated from both family and friends, (b) socially isolated from friends only, (c) socially isolated from family only, and (d) not socially isolated. Skin tone was self-reported. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to test the study hypotheses.Results: The analyses indicated that more frequent discriminatory experiences were associated with increased risk for subjective and objective social isolation. Skin tone moderated the association between discrimination and subjective isolation; the discrimination-isolation relationship was stronger among participants with darker skin tones.Conclusions: These findings shed light on African Americans' nuanced experiences with discrimination and colorism. Further, the data demonstrate heterogeneity in the vulnerability to the adverse effects of discrimination within the African American population; the relationship between discrimination and subjective isolation was stratified by skin tone. Phenotypic variations of eye color, skin color, and iris surface features have been well-explored in certain populations. However, there has been comparatively little research on variations in these features in Pakistani population. The aim of this study is to discover phenotypic diversity and correlations of pigmented traits and iris surface features in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province of Pakistan. Digital images of eyes and skin were examined by investigators to determine color using Fitzpatrick Phototype Scale. Similarly, iris patterns were characterized by Edward iris feature software and association studies were conducted through SPSS program. Intermediate eye color was frequent in KPK (44%) while brown was higher in Punjab (47%). Contrarily, light to medium brown skin color was recurring (55%) in Punjab whereas lighter skin color prevailed in KPK (69%). Furthermore, Fuchs' crypts were significantly correlated with contraction furrows in both populations. Likewise, crypts were significantly associated with Wolfflin nodules and furrows were significantly related to conjunctival melanosis and pigment spots in KPK sample set. Based on unique iris patterns, these phenotypic traits would be helpful for individuals' discrimination in the population. Background: Previous research conducted since 1968 have extensively examined the correlation between tooth color and skin color. The purpose of these studies was to determine whether skin color could effectively influence dentists in choosing tooth color. The objective of this systematic review is to examine the methodologies employed in assessing the relationship between tooth and skin color, and to identify the most precise and dependable approaches for modeling and evaluating this relationship. The systematic review was registered in the PROSPERO (CRD42022356022). This systematic review was done on four databases using PRISMA 2009 search strategy, and selected studies were chosen according to PICO model. JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist was used for quality assessment. Out of 1611 articles that were found in the databases, 10 articles matched the criteria and were selected for this systematic review study. Three main methods were found in the 10 studies: conventional methods, digital methods, conventional-digital (mixed) methods. Digital methods were found to be the more reliable methods for color evaluation. Specific settings should be applied during digital color measuring methods. Conventional and digital assessment methods showed either a negative or a positive significant association between the color of teeth and skin. However, the combined method (digital for tooth and visual for skin) did not show any such relation. It is imperative to conduct and apply research in Artificial Intelligence to forecast tooth color based on knowledge of skin color.

The koi carp is an ornamental fish that was obtained through artificial selection from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). The most economically important traits of koi are their beautiful skin patterns in bright colors. As seasonality is an important factor in the biology and ecology of fish, we thus assumed that seasonal changes are involved in regulating the formation of skin color and patterns of koi carp. The white, red, cyan, and black skin colors from four varieties of scaleless koi carp (Doitsu Shiromuji (W), Doitsu Kohaku (WR), Doitsu Showa Sanke (WRI), and Kumonryu (WI)) were evaluated using the CIELab color space (lightness, redness, and yellowness) in different seasons. Compared to winter, the yellowness of the white color in all koi varieties decreased in summer and autumn. The black skin color areas in WRI and WI koi increased in summer and autumn compared to winter. The yellowness of the red color decreased only in WRI koi, while no changes were observed in WR koi. Targeted metabolomics analysis revealed that the levels of the structural pigment guanine of all koi varieties showed significant seasonal variation. Of seven detected carotenoids, the zeaxanthin and tunaxanthin contents in W, WI, and WRI koi changed with the seasons, while none of the carotenoids in WR koi were altered. Of the seven potential regulatory metabolites, epinephrine, melatonin, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in all four koi varieties showed the highest levels in winter. A correlation analysis suggested that the seasonal changes in white skin color occurred through the epinephrine-cAMP pathway; melanin-dependent and carotenoid-dependent skin color changes occurred through melatonin in koi carp. This study demonstrated the seasonal plasticity of skin color in koi carp regulated by melatonin and epinephrine, associating with variety and color specificity.

This research aimed to determine the meat production indicators and carcass traits of Posavska crested hen, which is the Croatian indigenous chicken breed. The research was carried out on five strains of the Posavska crested hen breed: yellow vetch, vetch, red colourful, light gray, and golden brown. Feeding was ad libitum for the whole time, adapted to the age of the chickens from a nutritional point of view. Separation by sex was carried out at the age of four weeks, while slaughter of roosters and determination of carcass traits was done at the age of 18 weeks. The highest average body weight was achieved by roosters of light gray and yellow vetch strain (3542.63 and 3430.38 g, respectively) and light gray pullets (2562 g) at the age of 18 weeks. The lowest feed conversion ratio was achieved by the light gray strain (2.39) at four weeks of age, and by the the roosters of the light gray strain (4.07) and pullets of the light gray and golden brown strain (4.08) at 18 weeks of age. The average dressing percentage was 71.54%, while the highest average dressing percentage was established in the red colourful strain (72.48%). Regarding the proportion of individual parts of the carcass, a significant (P < 0.05) influence of the strain can be seen in the proportion of drumsticks in the carcass, the proportion of which was the highest in the yellow vetch strain (18.69%). A significant influence of the strain was also found regarding L* (P < 0.01) and a* (P < 0.05) skin color indicators. Considering the established differences between the strains, it is necessary to carry out further selection and work on the uniformity of the breed.

Abstract Objectives The collection of genotype data was conducted as an essential part of a pivotal research project with the goal of examining the genetic variability of skin, hair, and iris color among the Kazakh population. The data has practical application in the field of forensic DNA phenotyping (FDA). Due to the limited size of forensic databases from Central Asia (Kazakhstan), it is practically impossible to obtain an individual identification result based on forensic profiling of short tandem repeats (STRs). However, the pervasive use of the FDA necessitates validation of the currently employed set of genetic markers in a variety of global populations. No such data existed for the Kazakhs. The Phenotype Expert kit (DNA Research Center, LLC, Russia) was used for the first time in this study to collect data. Data description The present study provides genotype data for a total of 60 SNP genetic markers, which were analyzed in a sample of 515 ethnic Kazakhs. The dataset comprises a total of 41 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) obtained from the HIrisPlex-S panel. Additionally, there are 4 SNPs specifically related to the AB0 gene, 1 marker associated with the AMELX/Y genes, and 14 SNPs corresponding to the primary haplogroups of the Y chromosome. The aforementioned data could prove valuable to researchers with an interest in investigating genetic variability and making predictions about phenotype based on eye color, hair color, skin color, AB0 blood group, gender, and biogeographic origin within the male lineage.

ObjectivesU.S. Latino populations are diverse. Research on racial identity, skin tone, and Latino health is imperative for understanding and combating racism and colorism. We examined differences in memory performance: among non-Latinos and Latinos who identified as Black, other, and White in the United States and then among Puerto Ricans in Boston whose skin tones ranged from dark, medium, light to "white."MethodsWe used 2010 Health and Retirement Study and 2004 Boston Puerto Rican Health Survey data, respectively, to examine racial and color differences in memory performance among 50 and older adults in the United States and Puerto Rican older adults in Boston. We applied ordinary least squares regression to immediate and delayed word recall test scores and adjusted for education, health conditions, and health behaviors.ResultsIn adjusted models, White non-Latinos had better memory performance than White Latinos. Black Latinos, other Latinos, and Black non-Latinos had lower delayed word recall scores than White Latinos. Black Latinos and Black non-Latinos had similar scores. Intra-Latino racial disparities endured despite the inclusion of education and other covariates. Among Puerto Ricans in Boston, medium-toned individuals had higher scores than "white"-toned individuals.DiscussionFindings support the importance of examining self-identified race and skin tone in Latino aging research. Further investigation is needed to understand the stubborn intra-Latino racial disparities in memory performance and surprising adverse cognitive performance among "white"-toned relative to darker-toned Puerto Ricans in Boston.

This paper revisits Fleeming Jenkin's anonymous review of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, published in the North British Review in June 1867. This review is usually revered for its impact on Darwin's theory of descent with modification. Its classical interpretation states that Jenkin, a Professor of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, made a compelling case against natural selection based on the fact of "blending inheritance" and the "swamping" of advantageous variations. Those themes, however, are strikingly absent from Jenkin's text. They were later read into Jenkin's text by scholars trying to explain how Darwinian selection was reconciled with Mendelian genes and the birth of the Modern Synthesis. While many scholars have tried to measure Jenkin's effect on Darwin, the value of the 1867 review remains unclear. This paper re-examines its content and concludes that Jenkin's "able review" was in fact written by an engineer whose competencies in biology were very low. Focusing on the figure of the shipwrecked white sailor isolated on an island inhabited by Black people, this paper also underlines the racial assumptions behind Jenkin's review. "Blending inheritance" is thus a theme linked to theoretical reworkings on the question of race and skin colors, taking its root in Galton's typology of heredity. Darwin was probably mostly unimpressed by Jenkin's review. The problems raised by the review were not so much "blending inheritance" and "swamping" but a conundrum of problems related to the effects of intercrossing on variation and reversion. Although acne is a prevalent multifactorial inflammatory skin condition, few studies were performed in multiethnic populations. To study the prevalence and determinants of acne in a multiethnic study at the start of puberty. This cross-sectional study is embedded in Generation R, a population-based prospective study from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Three-dimensional facial photos at the center visit in 2016-2019 (of ∼13-year-olds) were used to grade acne severity using the Global Evaluation of the Acne Severity (GEA). Analyses were stratified by biological sex and explored through chi-square tests and multivariable ordinal logistic regression. A total of 4561 children (51% girls) with a median age of 13.5 (IQR 13.3-13.6) were included. The visible acne prevalence (GEA 2-5) for girls vs boys was 62% vs 45% and moderate-to-severe acne (GEA 3-5) 14% vs 9%. Higher puberty stages (adjusted odds ratios: 1.38 [1.20-1.59] and 2.16 [1.86-2.51] for girls and boys, respectively) and darker skin colors V and VI (adjusted odds ratios: 1.90 [1.17-3.08] and 2.43 [1.67-3.56]) were associated with more severe acne in both sexes, and being overweight in boys (adjusted odds ratio: 1.58 [1.15-2.17]). Maintaining the vibrant color of fruit is a longstanding challenge in fruit and vegetable preservation. Chitosan and selenium, known for their protective and antioxidant properties, have been applied to preserve these produce. This study aimed to investigate the influence of selenium–chitosan treatment (comprising 25 mg L−1 selenium and 1.0% chitosan) on the color of "Red Globe" grapes and to analyze the relative expression of genes associated with anthocyanin synthesis enzymes (VvCHS, VvCHI, VvF3H, VvF3′H, VvF3′5′H, VvDFR, VvLDOX, VvUFGT, VvOMT, Vv5GT, and VvGST) using RT-qPCR. Our goal was to uncover the regulatory mechanisms governing grape color. Comparing various treatments, we observed that selenium–chitosan treatment had a significant effect in reducing decay, maintaining the soluble solids content of grape flesh, and preserving the vivid color of grape. This research indicated that selenium–chitosan treatment slowed down browning and prevented the reduction in total phenolic, flavonoids, and anthocyanin in the grape. Moreover, gene expression analysis revealed that selenium–chitosan treatment increased the expression of VvCHS, VvF3H, VvF'3′H, VvLDOX, and Vv5GT, while also stabilized the expression of VvCHI, VvF3′H, and VvDFR in grape skins. These findings shed light on the potential mechanism by which selenium–chitosan impacts grape color. This study established a theoretical foundation for investigating the molecular mechanisms behind selenium–chitosan's ability to slow down grape browning and provides a novel approach to enhancing fruit and vegetable preservation techniques. Background: Standardized methods for sun protection factor (SPF) testing are still beset with endpoint and method‐driven issues, and can be influenced by multiple factors. The purpose of this analysis is to explore the factors influencing the results of sun protection factor (SPF) testing in human subjects according to the ISO 24444:2019 standard. Intrinsic factors, such as baseline skin color, age and gender, the minimal erythemal dose on an unprotected area (MEDu), as well as environmental factors such as season/weather influences, are considered for analysis. Methods: Datasets generated for two reference products (P2 and P8) during the conduct of 50 such studies using the ISO standard 24444:2019 for the testing of SPF products, from a single testing center located in Bucharest, Romania between April 2021 and December 2022, were retrieved and compiled. Overall, the data for 334 subjects was available, with 276 observations for the reference P8, and 171 for P2. Results: No effects due to gender or age were detected. Seasonal changes, the individual typology angle (ITA°) and MEDu were found to have an influence on the outcome of the SPF values. Conclusions: This study adds new original data about the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on SPF variations pertaining to ISO reference sunscreen P8 (SPF 50+). The findings suggest that some factors will inevitably impact the results between two SPF experiments for the same product and SPF testing laboratory. The interconnections between the sources of this variation are discussed. The findings of this research help to identify and characterize factors that contribute to SPF testing variability. In this paper, we investigate whether skin color is a source of inequality in women's health by exploring the longitudinal framework of the PCSVDFMulher survey in Northeast Brazil. Specifically, we measure the skin color gradient in women's general and mental health, as well as in showing health risk behavior. We find that darker‐skinned women show poorer mental health outcomes and a higher likelihood of drinking and smoking more frequently than their lighter‐skinned counterparts. The skin color gradient is persistent and systematic, even when modeling different sources of unobserved heterogeneity and accounting for the existing socioeconomic inequalities and racial identity. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a well-known economical fish globally, and its market value and acceptance are greatly influenced by skin color. However, little is known about the roles of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) in rainbow trout skin color variation. In this study, we compared the expression profiles of whole transcriptome in dorsal skin from wild-type (WTrt) and yellow mutant rainbow trout (YMrt) that were F1 generation of WTrt ♂ × YMrt ♀. A total of 115 differentially expressed (DE) mRNAs, 126 lncRNAs, 18 circRNAs and 56 miRNAs were identified, and several core genes (gch1, pts, slc2all, pax7a/pax7b, dgat2, plin6 and pnpla2) involved in pteridine and carotenoid synthesis were significantly upregulated in YMrt. Interestingly, we found that melanogenesis-related genes tyr, dct, mitfa and pmel were also notably elevated in YMrt. Functional enrichment analysis revealed some pigmentation-related GO terms and KEGG pathways, including pteridine-containing compound biosynthetic process, pigment metabolic process, melanosome, melanosome transport, tyrosine metabolism and melanogenesis. Based on competing endogenous RNA analysis, novel_circ_000056 was found to regulate dgat2 by targeting novel-m0344-3p. This study provides a systematic perspective on the potential functions of these DEmRNAs and ncRNAs, and lays a foundation for further study on the molecular mechanisms governing rainbow trout skin color variation.

Premelanosome protein (pmela) is a key gene in the melanin synthesis pathway, which has an important impact on the skin color of animals. This study was conducted to explore the role of pmela in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) skin color variation. First, the full-length cDNA sequence of pmela was obtained using the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) technique, and bioinformatic analysis of the encoded protein was performed. Second, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was performed to detect the relative expression of pmela in different developmental stages [from the fertilized-stage to 3 months post-hatching (3 M)] and tissues of wild-type rainbow trout (WT), yellow mutant rainbow trout (YM), and their F1 generation. The results showed that the total length of pmela was 3 476 bp, including a 2 532 bp open reading frame encoding 843 amino acids. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that Pmela was a hydrophobic protein and had a PKD functional domain. Homology alignment showed that the similarity of the Pmela amino acid sequences of rainbow trout and sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) was 97.75%. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that rainbow trout was most closely related to sockeye salmon and most distantly to humans (Homo sapiens) and mice (Mus musculus). qRT-PCR results showed that pmela was expressed in all developmental stages of WT and YM, and the expression level of the gene from the fertilized-stage to the 16-cell stage was higher in WT than in YM, whereas the opposite expression pattern was identified after hatching. Moreover, there were significant differences in the expression of pmela at the same stages between WT and YM, including at the fertilized-stage, 4-cell, 16-cell, gastrula, neurula, somites, heartbeating, 1 day post-hatching (dph), 3 dph, 5 dph, 7 dph, 10 dph, 1 M and 2 M. In various tissues, pmela expression was significantly higher in the dorsal skin and eyes of WT and YM than in other tissues. In the hybrid F1 generation, the expression pattern of pmela was similar to those of both parents, and there was a significant difference in expression at the same stages between the F1 generation and the parents in most of the same stages and tissues. The above results indicate that the expression level of pmela is correlated with the skin color of rainbow trout and may be involved in the formation of its skin color, which provides basic data for further studying the role of pmela in the variation of rainbow trout skin color.

Opsins are a class of transmembrane proteins encoded by opsin genes, and they play a variety of functional roles. Short wavelength-sensitive opsin 2 (sws2), one of the five classes of visual opsin genes, mainly senses blue light. Previous research has indicated that sws2 is essential for melanocyte formation in fish; however, its specific role in skin color differentiation remains to be elucidated. Here, we identified the sws2 gene in a prized reef-dwelling fish, Plectropomus leopardus. The full-length P. leopardus sws2 gene encodes a protein consisting of 351 amino acids, and exhibits substantial homology with other fish species. The expression of the sws2 gene was widespread across P. leopardus tissues, with high expression in eye and skin tissues. Through immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization analyses, we discovered that the sws2 gene was primarily localized in the rod and cone cells of the retina, and epidermal cells of the skin. Furthermore, dsRNA interference was used for sws2 gene knockdown in living P. leopardus to elucidate its function in skin color differentiation. Black-color-related genes, melanin contents, and tyrosinase activity in the skin significantly decreased after sws2 knockdown (p < 0.05), but red-color-related genes and carotenoid and lutein contents significantly increased (p < 0.05). Retinoic acid injection produced the opposite results. Our results suggested that the sws2 gene influences P. leopardus skin color regulation by affecting vitamin synthesis and melanin-related gene expression levels. This study establishes a foundation for elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which sws2 regulates melanocyte formation in fish skin.

To analyze the development and nature of essentialist beliefs about race in earlychildhood, we replicated Mandalaywala and colleagues’ original study on the topic, in which a “switched-at-birth” task was used to test participants’ beliefs about the heritability of skin color and behavioral/psychological traits. We accessed their data through OSF and implemented quasibinomial and linear regression models using RStudio. As an extension to the original study, models were modified to incorporate participant sex as a variable. Overall, children judged skin color to be more heritable when the race of the birth mother was white but neither participant race nor sex was a strong predictor of general beliefs about the heritability of skin color. As expected, greater outgroup exposure was associated with a decrease in racial essentialism. Additionally, we found that Black participants exhibited higher levels of racial essentialism, and both Black participants and female participants displayed greater warmth toward Blacks. Despite children viewing skin color as a highly heritable factor, they do not hold strong causal essentialist beliefs of race, and these beliefs are further affected by the level of outgroup exposure that participants experience. Upon extending this model to compare across participant sexes, the results suggest that emotion-based judgments such as warmth toward Blacks differ more greatly between sexes, while general essentialist beliefs were not as differentiable. Essentialist beliefs may form more on the basis of intellectual development, in which there is a minimal distinction between males and females, rather than emotional experiences. The reason for certain variations across participant sex is hard to pinpoint but all in all, sex was not a significant determining factor in developing essentialist beliefs about race in children.

Social class inequality is increasing in countries around the world. Understanding and measuring social class has long been dependent solely on income data. This research note examines the situation specific to social classes in Mexico and provides a preliminary framework to measure social class using three criteria: wealth, skin color, and English-language proficiency. Methods to validate the accuracy of the index are also suggested for future research. The intersectional nature of the proposed index will allow policymakers and scholars to gain a better grasp of the interactions between different factors that contribute to differences between social groups. Heart rate monitoring is crucial in scientific and technical fields as it provides essential information about cardiovascular health, exercise performance, and stress levels, enabling early detection of and intervention for potential cardiac abnormalities or risks. Traditional methods for measuring heart rate often require direct contact with the body, which can be invasive and inconvenient. In this analysis, we have studied the remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) techniques for predicting heart wellness using different machine algorithms. To evaluate the effectiveness of different rPPG methods, we conducted a study with a diverse sample of 20 participants. We considered factors such as gender, skin texture (based on participants from India and Sierra Leone), and age group. By collecting data from various PPG and rPPG methods, we aimed to determine the most accurate technique for heart rate prediction. To accomplish this, we employed two machine learning algorithms: Lasso Regression and Random Forest Regression. These algorithms were trained on the collected heart rate data to predict and compare the performance of different rPPG methods. Our research findings indicate that both Random Forest Regression and Lasso Regression models exhibit promising results in predicting heart rate non-invasively and accurately. The Random Forest Regression model achieved an average mean square error of 3.193 and a coefficient of determination value of 0.885, while the Lasso Regression model achieved an average mean square error of 33.336 and a coefficient of determination, R2, value of 0.086. The relatively low Mean Squared Error (MSE) and high (R-squared) R2 values obtained from the Random Forest Regression model demonstrate its superior predictive performance compared to the Lasso Regression model. This suggests that the Random Forest algorithm is better suited for analyzing the collected heart rate prediction dataset using rPPG features. Our research findings underscore the potential of remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) and machine learning algorithms in predicting heart rate non-invasively. We have successfully analyzed the study method across different genders, regions, and skin colors. Moreover, our study emphasizes the significance of considering factors such as skin color pigments and their impact on the accuracy of heart rate predictions. Encapsulation of bioactive compounds in the liposome system provides several advantages, such as enhancing the stability and lowering the toxicity of active compounds. Coffee berry extract (CBE) has previously been established to have in vitro anti-aging properties and to retard the aging of human skin. The purposes of this study were to encapsulate CBE in nanoliposomes and to assess its stability and in vitro anti-aging potential in human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), as well as in healthy human skin. In the HDF model, anti-aging potential was determined by nitric oxide (NO) and collagenase inhibition assays and a superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity assay, whereas in healthy human skin (in vivo), the skin elasticity and brightness were examined. First, liposomal CBE (L-CBE) was created with a particle size of 117.33 ± 2.91 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.36 ± 0.03, and a zeta potential of −56.13 ± 1.87 mV. The percentages of encapsulation efficacy (%EE) and loading efficacy (%LE) were 71.26 ± 3.12% and 2.18 ± 0.18%, respectively. After undergoing a 12-week stability test, the L-CBE retained more phenolic content than the free CBE when stored at 4 °C, room temperature, and 45 °C. Compared to free CBE, the L-CBE demonstrated a more consistent, elevated, and prolonged release of phenolics from the lipid system. In human dermal fibroblasts, L-CBE showed lower toxicity, and at its maximum nontoxic concentration (10 mg/mL), it exhibited slightly higher anti-aging effects than CBE, including NO inhibition, enhanced SOD activity, and anti-collagenase activities. In clinical trials (30 volunteer subjects), none of the participants' skin was irritated when the L-CBE, the CBE, or base creams were applied. After 2 weeks of application, the L-CBE and CBE creams both demonstrated an improvement in skin elasticity and a reduction in melanin levels, and after 4 weeks, L-CBE cream showed a significantly greater improvement in skin elasticity and lightening. The results demonstrate that the encapsulation of the CBE in liposomal systems could increase its stability and skin penetration, reduce its toxicity, and maintain its anti-aging effect, which is powerful enough to be exploited in anti-aging and whitening agents for application in cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. Since melanin levels cannot cause anything, this study hypothesized that Latines' skin color would initially predict perceptions of anti-Black police and CJ system bias. Once Latines' personal experiences with discrimination were considered, however, discrimination was hypothesized to fully mediate the relationship between skin color and perceptions of anti-Black police and CJ system bias. Data consisted of 1,338 Latines from the American Trends Panel. Logistic regression results showed skin color was unrelated to perceptions of anti-Black police or CJ system bias. Pathway analyses including Latines' personal experiences with discrimination demonstrated skin color was directly negatively associated with perceptions of anti-Black police bias, although not directly related to perceptions of anti-Black CJ system bias. Darker-skinned Latines expressed greater belief they had been unfairly stopped by police due to race. In turn, Latines who felt they had been unfairly stopped by police due to race were more likely to report having been treated as suspicious by someone due to race, which increased perceptions of anti-Black police and CJ system bias. Moreover, darker-skinned Latines were more likely to feel they had been treated as suspicious by someone due to race in the anti-Black police bias model, but not the anti-Black CJ system bias model. Background/Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of obesity‐related dermatoses in obese children, and the association between these dermatoses and insulin resistance as well as skin color. Methods: Obese, overweight, and normal weight children according to body mass index who were followed up and treated in the outpatient clinics were included in the study. Dermatological examinations of the participants were performed, and fasting insulin and glucose levels were checked. Results: The obese and overweight children were evaluated as the patient group (70 girls, 41 boys, mean age: 12.37 ± 3.14 years). One hundred one healthy children with normal weight were determined as the control group (59 girls, 42 boys, mean age: 12.15 ± 2.43). The first five common dermatoses in the patient group when compared with the control group were keratosis pilaris (KP), striae distensae, hyperhidrosis, acanthosis nigricans (AN), and plantar hyperkeratosis. The first five dermatoses which were positively correlated with formation and insulin resistance were KP, striae distensae, AN, hyperhidrosis, and plantar hyperkeratosis. According to the Fitzpatrick skin scale, we found that the darker the skin color, the higher the probability of AN and KP (OR, 0.298; 95% CI, 0.106–0.834, p = 0.021; OR, 0.306; 95% CI, 0.117–0.796, p = 0.015, respectively). Conclusion: Some dermatoses associated with obesity and insulin resistance were not found in obese children, or there was no significant association. These results indicate that many skin morbidities may be prevented by preventing and treating obesity and insulin resistance in the early period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since ancient times, table grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) have been one of the most important fruit crops from the standpoint both of the producer (regional economics) and the consumer (healthy eating). In recent decades, much effort has been devoted to the development of this crop in order to improve fruit quality and yield; however, these advances have also entailed considerable increases in the use of agrochemicals. Unfortunately, as is now coming to light, the increased agrochemical use has had deleterious effects on the environment and has also had significant negative effects on human health and wellbeing. Our research investigates the effects of pre-harvest fruit bagging on key fruit quality traits and also on the accumulation of agrochemical residues in the fruit. Two prevalent white table grape cultivars were used, 'Italia' (late ripening) and 'Vittoria' (early ripening). They were bagged with three different materials: (1) paper, (2) parchment (a cellulose-based material), and (3) a non-woven fabric (felted polypropylene fibers). The bags were placed on grape clusters at phenological state BBCH 75 until harvest, and the bagged clusters were then compared with the unbagged control clusters. Qualitative traits and agrochemical residuals were assessed at harvest for two consecutive years, 2021 and 2022). The results show that the parchment protection bags positively affected some key fruit quality traits, with bigger and better-colored berries than the unbagged controls. Compared with the unbagged controls, all bagging treatments greatly reduced the levels of agrochemical residues, analyzed using GC-MS/MS and HPLC-MS/MS. For cv. 'Italia', in 2021 residues fell from 0.733 mg/kg (unbagged control) to 0.006 mg/kg (bagged), and in 2022 from 0.201 mg/kg (unbagged control) to 0.008 mg/kg (bagged); for cv. 'Vittoria', in 2021 residues fell from 0.201 mg/kg (unbagged control) to 0.008 mg/kg (bagged), and in 2022 from 0.077 mg/kg (unbagged control) to 0.046 mg/kg (bagged). The study shows the benefits of pre-harvest fruit bagging on grape berry quality and underscores the pivotal role bags can play in minimizing agrochemical residue accumulations on the fruit.
