The uptake of human papilloma virus (HPV) and other adolescent vaccinations in special schools for young people with disability is significantly lower than in mainstream settings. This study explored the factors believed to influence parental decision making regarding vaccine uptake for students with intellectual disability and/or on the autism spectrum attending special schools in New South Wales, Australia, from the perspective of all stakeholders involved in the program. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with 40 participants, including parents, school staff, and immunisation providers. The thematic analysis identified two themes: (1) appreciating diverse parental attitudes towards vaccination and (2) educating parents and managing vaccination questions and concerns. While most parents were described as pro-vaccination, others were anti-vaccination or vaccination-hesitant, articulating a marked protectiveness regarding their child's health. Reasons for vaccine hesitancy included beliefs that vaccines cause autism, concerns that the vaccination may be traumatic for the child, vaccination fatigue following COVID-19, and assumptions that children with disability will not be sexually active. Special school staff regarded the vaccination information pack as inadequate for families, and nurses described limited educational impact resulting from minimal direct communication with parents. Objective: Australia has implemented a nation-wide programme providing a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to girls and boys through school-based programmes. Previous research has identified three distinct areas for attention: (1) lack of understanding about HPV and HPV vaccination, (2) young people's desire for involvement in decision-making about HPV vaccination and (3) fear of HPV vaccination. We aimed to develop an intervention to address young people's low levels of understanding, to promote their involvement in consent and reduce vaccination-related fear and anxiety. Design, Setting, Methods: Formative qualitative research was conducted in six public, private and Catholic schools in the Sydney metropolitan area. Girls who were offered the vaccine in a school programme and aged 12-13 years were interviewed in focus groups. Piloting of materials was conducted in three private schools across Sydney with both girls and boys, and changes and additions were made to the materials in accordance with feedback. Results: We developed an educational intervention aimed at addressing gaps in young people's knowledge and understanding, and offering strategies to improve confidence with vaccination and reduce needle-related anxiety. Components of the final intervention include film chapters, a magazine, a website, an app and teacher support materials. The intervention is designed for teachers and/or nurses to deliver and is linked to the school-based HPV vaccination programme. Conclusions: This is the first educational intervention designed for young people in HPV school-based vaccination, to be developed from empirical data with the involvement of young people themselves.

Background: Adolescence is a key developmental period that affects lifelong health and is impacted by adolescents regularly engaging with digital health information. Adolescents need digital health literacy (DHL) to effectively evaluate the quality and credibility of such information, and to navigate an increasingly complex digital health environment. Few educational resources exist to improve DHL, and few have involved adolescents during design. The co-design approach may hold utility through developing interventions with participants as design partners. Objective: This project aimed to explore the co-design approach in developing an educational resource to improve adolescents' DHL. Methods: Adolescents (12-17 years old) attended 4 interactive co-design workshops (June 2021-April 2022). Participant perspectives were gathered on DHL and the design of educational resources to improve it. Data generated were analyzed through content analysis to inform educational resource development. Results: In total, 27 participants from diverse backgrounds attended the workshops. Insight was gained into participants' relationship with digital health information, including acceptance of its benefits and relevance, coupled with awareness of misinformation issues, revealing areas of DHL need. Participants provided suggestions for educational resource development that incorporated the most useful aspects of digital formats to develop skills across these domains. The following 4 themes were derived from participant perspectives: ease of access to digital health information, personal and social factors that impacted use, impacts of the plethora of digital information, and anonymity offered by digital sources. Initial participant evaluation of the developed educational resource was largely positive, including useful suggestions for improvement. Conclusions: Co-design elicited and translated authentic adolescent perspectives and design ideas into a functional educational resource. Insight into adolescents' DHL needs generated targeted educational resource content, with engaging formats, designs, and storylines. Background: Vaccination is a fundamental tenet of public and population health. Several barriers to vaccine uptake exist, exacerbated post-COVID-19, including misconceptions about vaccine efficacy and safety, vaccine hesitancy, vaccine inequity, costs, religious beliefs, and insufficient education and guidance for healthcare professionals. Vaccine uptake may be aided using microarray patches (MAPs) due to reduced pain, no hypodermic needle, enhanced thermostability, and potential for self and lay administration. Objectives: This protocol outlines the development of a scale that aims to accurately measure the perceived safety, usability, and acceptability of MAPs for vaccination among laypeople, MAP recipients, clinicians, and parents or guardians of children. Methods and analysis: This study will follow three phases of scale development and validation, including (1) item development, (2) scale development, and (3) scale evaluation. Inductive (interviews) and deductive methods (literature searches) will be used to develop scale items, which experts from target populations will assess through an online survey. Cognitive interviews will be conducted to observe their processes of answering the draft survey. Thematic analysis will be conducted to analyse qualitative data. Lastly, four surveys will be administered online to our target populations over two time points to determine their repeatability. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, Cronbach's alpha, and construct validity will be performed. Ethics: This study was approved by Metro South Health (HREC/2021/QMS/81653) and Western Sydney Local Health District (2023/ETH00705) Human Research Ethics Committees. Discussion: The scale will support a standardised approach to assessing the social and behavioural aspects of MAP vaccines, enabling comparison of outcomes across studies. Once validated, this scale will assist vaccination programmes in developing effective strategies for integrating MAPs and overcoming barriers to vaccination. Objectives: The Future Proofing Study (FPS) was established to examine factors associated with the onset and course of mental health conditions during adolescence. This paper describes the design, methods, and baseline characteristics of the FPS cohort. Methods: The FPS is an Australian school‐based prospective cohort study with an embedded cluster‐randomized controlled trial examining the effects of digital prevention programs on mental health. Data sources include self‐report questionnaires, cognitive functioning, linkage to health and education records, and smartphone sensor data. Participants are assessed annually for 5 years. Results: The baseline cohort (N = 6388, M = 13.9 years) is broadly representative of the Australian adolescent population. The clinical profile of participants is comparable to other population estimates. Overall, 15.1% of the cohort met the clinical threshold for depression, 18.6% for anxiety, 31.6% for psychological distress, and 4.9% for suicidal ideation. These rates were significantly higher in adolescents who identified as female, gender diverse, sexuality diverse, or Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (all ps < 0.05). Conclusions: This paper provides current and comprehensive data about the status of adolescent mental health in Australia. The FPS cohort is expected to provide significant insights into the risk, protective, and mediating factors associated with development of mental health conditions during adolescence. We sought to discover adolescents' thoughts about participation in longitudinal research and identify recruitment and retention strategies that were meaningful to them. We conducted seven focus groups with 10-15-year-olds in two large rural centers in New South Wales, Australia, and all focus groups were digitally recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. Adolescents discussed factors salient to their involvement in focus groups, as well as factors that may influence involvement in a longitudinal study. At the outset of the focus groups, adolescents had a positive view of "research," but were reluctant to engage in research that involved biologic samples. Effective recruitment of adolescents requires an appreciation of motivators, and time and resources to extend potential participants' understanding.

Grounded theory principles were systematically employed to reveal key differences in pregnancy risk and underlying disparities in contraceptive use in (a) never-pregnant (b) pregnant-terminated and (c) pregnant-continued teenagers. Analysis of 69 semistructured interviews revealed a bicausal model of pregnancy protection that accounted for variation in contraceptive use across the sample. Diverging pregnancy/childbearing desires and risk perceptions were conceptualized into three behavioral patterns that represented higher and lower levels of commitment to prevent pregnancy. The various ways that teenagers made sense of their behavior highlight the importance of acknowledging and respecting diversity in perspectives and experiences and provide a useful framework for educational and practitioner-delivered interventions with greater relevance and impact.
