Introduction: Pacemaker implantation is the only effective symptomatic treatment for life-threatening bradyarrhythmias. Major complications observed after implantation of cardiac pacemakers include lead dislocation, loss of pulse generator function, and inadequate stimulation. The aim of this retrospective single-centre study was to analyse the indications for pacemaker implantation and the incidence and types of complications associated with this procedure in dogs treated for symptomatic bradyarrhythmia.

Abstract

Introduction: Lung cancer has been the most common cause of cancer deaths in the past few decades worldwide. In the differentiation of the histopathological types, two basic markers are currently used, which are napsin A and thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1). Aim: To assess the sensitivity of TTF-1, napsin A and combined use of both markers in detecting primary lung adenocarcino-ma. The second aim was to examine the role of TTF-1 and napsin A both alone and in combination as prognostic markers. Material and methods: In the course of the study, patients' data were collected and histological specimens were evaluated using TTF-1 and napsin A as cancer markers. Results: The sensitivities for TTF-1 and napsin A when used separately were 74.58% and 49.15% respectively. When a panel of both TTF-1 and napsin A was used the sensitivity increased to 79.17% as 38 out of 48 cases were positive for either or both of the immunohistochemical markers. The results for 1-, 3-, 4-year survival data were 87.9%, 70.7 %, 58.6%, with TTF-1 positive patients having better survival. Conclusions: We have shown that both TTF-1 and napsin A are sensitive markers of primary lung adenocarcinoma with TTF-1 being more sensitive. Abstract

Introduction: Despite the constant decrease of performed pneumonectomies (PN) in recent years, it is still necessary for 15-20% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to undergo total lung resection due to the local progression of the disease. Aim: To assess the frequency and type of postoperative complications, quality of life, and the early and long-term results after PN performed due to NSCLC. Material and methods: In the total group of 1160 patients, operated on in 2008-2011 due to NSCLC, 192 of them underwent PN (16.6%). The quality of life was analysed using EORTCQLQ- C30 questionnaire. Results: Perioperative mortality after PN was 4%. Five-year survival reached 45%. The factors that significantly affected the 5-year survival in multivariate analysis were: pTNM stage, pN stage, intrapericardial resection, and additional extrapulmonary structures resection. The mean Global Quality of Life was 50.8. The Symptom Scale ranged from 7 to 54.3, the Functional Scale from 58.2 to 76.3 and the rate for NSCLC symptoms ranged from 2.2 to 48.1. Conclusions: Pneumonectomies in patients with NSCLC is associated with higher risk of postoperative complications but it does not significantly increase the perioperative mortality. Long-term results in this group of patients are encouraging. According to the questionnaire, the quality of life is favourable. Low intensity of typical NSCLC symptoms was observed. The appropriate qualification for right-sided PN and exclusion of metastasis in N2 nodes are crucial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

During the last decade increasing interest in parallel programming can be observed. It is caused by a tendency of developing microprocessors as a multicore units, that can perform instructions simultaneously. Popular and widely used example of such platform is a graphic processing unit (GPU). Its ability to perform calculations simultaneously is being investigated as a way for improving performance of the complex algorithms. Therefore, GPU’s are now having the architectures that allows to use its computional power by programmers and software developers in the same way as CPU. One of these architectures is CUDA platform, developed by nVidia. Aim of this thesis is to implement the parallel CYK algorithm, which is one of the most popular parsing algorithms, for CUDA platform, that will gain a significant speed-up in comparison with the sequential CYK algorithm. The thesis presents review of existing parallelisations of CYK algorithm, descriptions of implemented algorithms (basic version and few modifications), and experimental stage, that includes testing these versions for various inputs in order to justify which version of algorithm is giving the best performance. There are three versions of algorithm presented, from which one was selected as the best (giving about 10 times better performance for the longest instances of inputs). Also, a limited version of algorithm, that gives best performance (even 100 times better in comparison with non-limited sequential version), but requires some conditions to be fulfilled by grammar, is presented. The motivation for the thesis is to use the developed algorithm in GCS.

40. Derrida i Wittgenstein: o iterowalności i kierowaniu się regułą

W tekście Sygnatura zdarzenie kontekst Derrida, analizując dominujące filozoficzne pojęcia pisma, wydobywa z niego cechę, którą nazywa „iterowalnością”. Jej bliższe zbadanie pozwala na zredefiniowanie tradycyjnego pojęcia komunikacji językowej, rozumianej jako proces przekazywania między podmiotami uprzedniego już i gotowego wobec tego procesu znaczenia. Sposób, w jaki Derrida charakteryzuje iterowalność, nasuwa skojarzenia z rozważaniami w Dociekaniach filozoficznych Wittgensteina na temat kierowania się regułą. Celem tego artykułu będzie zatem, z jednej strony, przedstawienie poglądów Derridy na temat iterowalności, a z drugiej, porównanie ich z poglądami Wittgensteina. Porównanie to pokaże, że mimo prób ich ścisłego łączenia, poglądy te w kluczowych miejscach pozostają nieprzystawalne, głównie z uwagi na odmienną rolę kategorii kontekstu., Diametros, No 24 (2010)

Proponowany przez Derridę projekt filozoficzny, określany mianem „dekonstrukcji”, spotykał się z zarzutami, wysuwanymi na polu etyki – nieprzydatności dla rozważań o moralności, relatywizmu bądź nihilizmu. Jednym z tekstów, które z tymi zarzutami podejmują polemikę, jest Force of Law (nietłumaczony dotąd na język polski). Derrida, kontynuując rozwijaną już wcześniej przez siebie filozofię inności, inspirowaną Emmanuelem Levinasem, przedstawia dekonstrukcję jako strategię filozoficzną, która "działa w imię sprawiedliwości", będąc zarazem warunkowaną przez istnienie prawa jako obiektu, który z samej swej istoty podlega dekonstrukcyjnemu odczytywaniu. The concepts of a folk monsterarium and folk demonology have come to dominate Polish horror film. Viewers easily identify the generic border between the cinema of horror and the cinema of terror, Cinema, as they interpret thematic or emotional motifs related to experiencing fear and terror. Yet, for film scholars, a formal definition of horror does not seem so simple. Polish cinema relying on "uncanny" themes and motifs does not abound with films that are artistically successful and capable of evoking the sense of fear. Having been reworked by our Romantic literature, folk motifs have been used in Polish cinema with mixed success. I prove this thesis examining Polish films employing folk motifs.
