Abstract

Focusing on two-level atoms, we apply the positive $P$ representation to a full-wave mixed bosonic and fermionic system of Jaynes-Cummings type and identify an advantageous degree of freedom in the choice of the involved nonorthogonal fermionic basis states. On this basis, we propose a stochastic correction to the Maxwell-Bloch equations by relating them to a stochastic differential equation on a nonclassical phase space, which captures the full second quantization dynamics of the system. This approach explores the connection between semiclassical and field-quantized treatments of light-matter interaction and can potentially be used for the simulation of nonclassical light sources while retaining the main advantages of a semiclassical model., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present a full-wave Maxwell-density matrix simulation tool including c-number stochastic noise terms for the modeling of the spatiotemporal dynamics in active photonic devices, such as quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) and quantum dot (QD) structures. The coherent light-matter interaction in such devices plays an important role in the generation of frequency combs and other nonlinear and nonclassical optical phenomena. Since the emergence of nonlinear and nonclassical features is directly linked to the noise properties, detailed simulations of the noise characteristics are required for the development of low-noise quantum optoelectronic sources. Our semiclassical simulation framework is based on the Lindblad equation for the electron dynamics, coupled with Maxwell's equations for the optical propagation in the laser waveguide. Fluctuations arising from interactions of the optical field and quantum system with their reservoirs are treated within the quantum Langevin theory. Here, the fluctuations are included by adding stochastic c-number terms to the Maxwell-density matrix equations. Abstract

Nonlinear polaritons in microcavity waveguides are demonstrated to exhibit multi-stable behaviour and rich dynamics, including filamentation and soliton formation. We find that the multi-stability originates from co-existense of different transverse modes of the po- laritonic waveguide. Modulational stability and conditions for multi-mode polariton solitons are studied. Soliton propagation in tilted, relative to the pump momentum, waveguides is demonstrated and a critical tilt angle for the soliton propagation is found.
