Mounting evidence finds that early life environmental factors increased the probability of autism spectrum disorder. We estimated prospective associations between early life environmental factors and autism spectrum disorder symptoms in children at the age of 2 years in a population-derived birth cohort, the Barwon Infant Study. Autism spectrum disorder symptoms at the age of 2 years strongly predicted autism spectrum disorder diagnosis by the age of 4 years (area under curve = 0.93; 95% CI (0.82, 1.00)). After adjusting for child's sex and age at the time of behavioural assessment, markers of socioeconomic disadvantage, such as lower household income and lone parental status; maternal health factors, including younger maternal age, maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, higher gestational weight gain and prenatal maternal stress; prenatal alcohol; environmental air pollutant exposures, including particulate matter < 2.5 [mu]m at birth, child secondhand tobacco smoke exposure at 12 months, dampness/mould and home heating with oil, kerosene or diesel heaters at 2 years postnatal. Lower socioeconomic indexes for area, later birth order, higher maternal prenatal depression, and maternal smoking frequency had a dose-response relationship with autism spectrum disorder symptoms. Future studies on environmental factors and autism spectrum disorder should consider the reasons for the socioeconomic disparity and the combined impact of multiple environmental factors through common mechanistic pathways. The association of air pollution and greenspace with respiratory pathogen acquisition and respiratory health was investigated in a community-based birth-cohort of 158 Australian children. Weekly nasal swabs and daily symptom-diaries were collected for 2-years, with annual reviews from ages 3-7-years. Annual exposure to fine-particulate-matter (PM2.5), nitrogen-dioxide (NO2), and normalised-difference-vegetation-index (NDVI) was estimated for pregnancy and the first 2-years-of-life. We examined rhinovirus, any respiratory virus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Haemophilus influenzae detections in the first 3-months-of-life, age at initial pathogen detection, wheezing in the first 2-years, and asthma at ages 5-7-years. Our findings suggest that higher NDVI was associated with fewer viral and M. catarrhalis detections in the first 3-months, while increased PM2.5 and NO2 were linked to earlier symptomatic rhinovirus and H. influenzae detections, respectively. However, no associations were observed with wheezing or asthma. Early-life exposure to air pollution and greenspace may influence early-life respiratory pathogen acquisition and illness. Background and objective: The association between air pollution and poor respiratory health outcomes is well established. Children are particularly at risk from air pollution, especially during the prenatal period as their organs and systems are still undergoing crucial development. This study investigated maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, and infant lung function at 4 weeks of age. Methods: Data from the Barwon Infant Study were available for 314 infants. The exposure to NO2 and PM2.5 were estimated. Infant lung function (4 weeks) was measured by multiple-breath washout. Glycoprotein acetyls (GlycA) (36 weeks prenatal), cord blood, and OS biomarkers were measured in maternal urine (28 weeks). A genetic pathway score for OS (gPFSox) was calculated. Linear regression was used and potential modification by the OS genotype was tested. Results: There was no relationship between maternal exposure to air pollution and infant lung function, or with GlycA or OS during pregnancy. We found an association in children with a genetic propensity to OS between NO2 and a lower functional residual capacity (FRC) (β = −5.3 mls, 95% CI (−9.3, −1.3), p = 0.01) and lung clearance index (LCI) score (β = 0.46 turnovers, (95% CI 0.10, 0.82), p = 0.01). Conclusion: High prenatal exposure to ambient NO2 is associated with a lower FRC and a higher LCI score in infants with a genetic propensity to oxidative stress. Childhood asthma is a major health issue in Australia, and traffic emissions play a causative role. Two urban planning policies that impact children's exposure to traffic emissions are considered in terms of the potential health risks to children in a Melbourne suburb with high truck volumes and hospital attendances for childhood asthma. Firstly, the health impact assessment component of the state planning approval of a major road project, and secondly, local government placement of childcare centres and schools in relation to freight routes. Three sources of air quality monitoring data were examined: (i) a Victorian EPA reference site; (ii) a site with planning approval for development into a childcare centre; and (iii) five sites within the boundary of the West Gate Tunnel Project, an AUD 10 billion road and tunnel project. The Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network data was utilised to assess distances of childcare centres and schools from major truck routes. A range of cconcentration–response functions for childhood asthma (0–18 years) from international systematic meta-analyses and a smaller Australian cross-sectional study were applied to comparative elevations in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations between the EPA reference monitor (used for project risk assessment) and local roadside data. It was found that comparative elevations in NO2 concentrations were associated with the following risk increases: developing asthma 13%, active asthma 12%, and lifetime asthma 9%. Overall, 41% of childcare centres (n = 51) and 36% of schools (n = 22) were ≤150 m to a high-density truck route. Truck emissions likely make a substantial contribution to childhood asthma outcomes in the project area. Introduction Extremely preterm births (EPT), require complex decision making and significant medical interventions. While environmental factors such as ambient temperature extremes have been associated with preterm births, little is known of the environmental associations with EPT births. The objective of this study is to explore whether ambient temperature is associated with increased risk of EPT birth. Methods Birth records for 315,226 infants born in Queensland Australia (2007-2015) were matched to average maximum and minimum temperature for the last month of pregnancy. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using a generalised linear model. Population attributable risk was calculated for a 5% reduction in maximum temperature. Results Each one degree increase in maximum [aOR 1.03 (95% CI 1.01, 1.05)] and minimum temperature [aOR 1.02 (95% CI 1.01, 1.04)] was associated with an increase in odds for EPT birth. Increased odds for EPT births was found for maternal smoking [aOR 1.46 (95% CI 1.23, 1.72)], increasing plurality [OR 6.38 (95% CI 5.48, 7.42)] and stillbirth [aOR 342.99 (95% CI 295.53, 398.06)]. When stratified by birth status, the association was only found for live births. Discussion Higher temperatures are associated with small increases in the odds of delivering an infant in the EPT period. The risk may be enhanced for women who smoke during pregnancy. Human environments influence human health in both positive and negative ways. Green space is considered an environmental exposure that confers benefits to human health and has attracted a high level of interest from researchers, policy makers, and increasingly clinicians. Green space has been associated with a range of health benefits, such as improvements in physical, mental, and social wellbeing. There are different sources, metrics and indicators of green space used in research, all of which measure different aspects of the environment. It is important that readers of green space research understand the terminology used in this field, and what the green space indicators used in the studies represent in the real world. This paper provides an overview of the major definitions of green space and the indicators used to assess exposure for health practitioners, public health researchers, and health policy experts who may be interested in understanding this field more clearly, either in the provision of public health-promoting services or to undertake research.
