Tritaxis kurnoolensis, a small tree of the Euphorbiaceae family, is endemic to a valley within the Sullavai Sandstone plateau in close proximity to the Paleru Reservoir (Owk dam). The species is a narrow endemic. No documented sightings of this species have been recorded beyond the type locality since its description in 1994 by Venkataraju & Pullaiah as Dimorphocalyx kurnoolensis from the Nandyal District of Andhra Pradesh. In this study, the authors applied the grid method for quantification and subjected the species to a meticulous analysis aligning with IUCN Red List Criteria. The distribution was found to be restricted due to habitat (valley) fragmentation, reservoir which is arresting seed dispersal, and destruction caused by tunnel construction civil works. The area of occupancy (AOO) at 16 km² and the extent of occurrence (EOO) at 0.474 km², were systematically computed using GeoCAT. The species is assessed here using the Red List methodology for evaluating extinction risk. Based on its AOO, EOO, and population size, it has been classified as Critically Endangered. Pistacia chinensis and Pistacia weinmannifolia are small trees and are distributed in East Asia, in particular China. The data on P. chinensis presented in this article is associated with the research article, “DOI: 10.5010/JPB.2019.46.4.274” [1]. Both P. chinensis and P. weinmannifolia have long been used as ethnobotanical plants to treat various illnesses, including dysentery, inflammatory swelling, rheumatism, liver diseases, influenza, lung cancer, etc. Many studies have been carried out to delve into the pharmaceutical properties of these Pistacia species using plant extracts, but genomic studies are very rarely performed to date. To enrich the genetic information of these two species, RNA sequencing was conducted using a pair-end Illumina HiSeq2500 sequencing system, resulting in 2.6 G of raw data from P. chinensis (Accession no: SRR10136265) and 2.7 G bases from P. weinmannifolia (Accession no: SRR10136264). Transcriptome shotgun assembly using three different assembly tools generated a total of 18,524 non-redundant contigs (N50, 1104 bp) from P. chinensis and 18,956 from P. weinmannifolia (N50, 1137 bp). The data is accessible at NCBI BioProject: PRJNA566127. These data would be crucial for the identification of genes associated with the compounds exerting pharmaceutical properties and also for molecular marker development.

Combinatorics of biopolymer structures, especially enumeration of various RNA secondary structures and protein contact maps, is of significant interest for communities of both combinatorics and computational biology. However, most of the previous combinatorial enumeration results for these structures are presented in terms of generating functions, and few are explicit formulas. This paper is mainly concerned with finding explicit enumeration formulas for a particular class of biologically relevant structures, say, saturated 2-regular simple stacks, whose configuration is related to protein folds in the 2D honeycomb lattice. We establish a semi-bijective algorithm that converts saturated 2-regular simple stacks into forests of small trees, which produces a uniform formula for saturated extended 2-regular simple stacks with any of the six primary component types. Summarizing the six different primary component types, we obtain a bivariate explicit formula for saturated extended 2-regular simple stacks with n vertices and k arcs. As consequences, the uniform formula can be reduced to Clote's results on k -saturated 2-regular simple stacks and the optimal 2-regular simple stacks, and Guo et al.'s result on the optimal extended 2-regular simple stacks. Abstract: Species richness, floristic composition, and structure of understory treelets were investigated in three 1-ha plots, distributed in the undisturbed tropical seasonal rain forest of Xishuangbanna, SW China. We investigated all the woody species except lianas in these plots, compared the differences of species diversity of trees and treelets in these plots and the differences of understory structure between this forest and the typical dipterocarp forests in SE Asia. We found 5089 individuals belonging to 356 species, 189 genera, and 63 families in the three plots. The five most important families were Rubiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lauraceae, Meliaceae, and Annonacae. The treelet layer was much more diverse than the tree layer, indicating that result based only on trees may be not an appropriate representation of the diversity status of a particular tropical forest type. The three plots were more similar when the treelet layer was considered than when tree layer was considered. In contrast with the dipterocarp forests in SE Asia, the understory of tropical seasonal rain forest was mainly composed of the trees with small and middle stature at maturity classes. These results indicate that the structure of tropical forest understory may differ not only among continents but also within continent. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Stand structure and woody species diversity in a subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest grown in a silicate habitat, Okinawa Island, have been investigated on the basis of stand stratification. The forest stand consisted of four layers. The floristic composition of the top and the lower three layers was only slightly similar, although approximately one-third of the species were common to them. Mean tree weight decreased from the top toward the bottom layer whereas tree density increased from the top downward. This trend resembled the mean weight–density trajectory of self-thinning plant populations. The relationship between mean tree height and tree density for the upper two layers supported Yamakura’s quasi −1/2 power law of tree height. The values of the Shannon–Wiener index, H′, and the equitability index, J′, tended to increase from the top layer downward except for the bottom layer. The values of H′ and J′ were, respectively, 4.83 bit and 0.82 for trees taller than 0.10 m. The lower layers contained many species of smaller height. High species diversity of the forest depended on small trees in the lower layers. Conservation of small trees in the lower layers, especially the bottom layer, is indispensable for sound maintenance of Okinawan evergreen broadleaf forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
