- Abstract
The workload of general surgeons is multifaceted, encompassing not only surgical procedures but also a myriad of other responsibilities. From April to May 2023, we conducted a CHERRIES-compliant internet-based survey analyzing clinical practice, academic engagement, and post-on-call rest. The questionnaire featured six sections with 35 questions. Statistical analysis used Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and logistic regression (SPSS (R) v. 28). The survey received a total of 1.046 responses (65.4%). Over 78.0% of responders came from Europe, 65.1% came from a general surgery unit; 92.8% of European and 87.5% of North American respondents were involved in research, compared to 71.7% in Africa. Europe led in publishing research studies (6.6 +/- 8.6 yearly). Teaching involvement was high in North America (100%) and Africa (91.7%). Surgeons reported an average of 6.7 +/- 4.9 on-call shifts per month, with European and North American surgeons experiencing 6.5 +/- 4.9 and 7.8 +/- 4.1 on-calls monthly, respectively. African surgeons had the highest on-call frequency (8.7 +/- 6.1). Post-on-call, only 35.1% of respondents received a day off. Europeans were most likely (40%) to have a day off, while African surgeons were least likely (6.7%). On the adjusted multivariable analysis HDI (Human Development Index) (aOR 1.993) hospital capacity > 400 beds (aOR 2.423), working in a specialty surgery unit (aOR 2.087), and making the on-call in-house (aOR 5.446), significantly predicted the likelihood of having a day off after an on-call shift. Our study revealed critical insights into the disparities in workload, access to research, and professional opportunities for surgeons across different continents, underscored by the HDI.

Reservoir Computing is a bio-inspired computing paradigm for processing time dependent signals. The performance of its analogue implementation are comparable to other state of the art algorithms for tasks such as speech recognition or chaotic time series prediction, but these are often constrained by the offline training methods commonly employed. Here we investigated the online learning approach by training an opto-electronic reservoir computer using a simple gradient descent algorithm, programmed on an FPGA chip. Our system was applied to wireless communications, a quickly growing domain with an increasing demand for fast analogue devices to equalise the nonlinear distorted channels. We report error rates up to two orders of magnitude lower than previous implementations on this task. We show that our system is particularly well-suited for realistic channel equalisation by testing it on a drifting and a switching channels and obtaining good performances, Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

The production of nanofibers has become a significant area of research due to their unique properties and diverse applications in various fields, such as biomedicine, textiles, energy, and environmental science. Electrospinning, a versatile and scalable technique, has gained considerable attention for its ability to fabricate nanofibers with tailored properties. Among the wide array of conductive polymers, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) has emerged as a promising material due to its exceptional conductivity, environmental stability, and ease of synthesis. The electrospinning of PEDOT-based nanofibers offers tunable electrical and optical properties, making them suitable for applications in organic electronics, energy storage, biomedicine, and wearable technology. This review, with its comprehensive exploration of the fabrication, properties, and applications of PEDOT nanofibers produced via electrospinning, provides a wealth of knowledge and insights into leveraging the full potential of PEDOT nanofibers in next-generation electronic and functional devices by examining recent advancements in the synthesis, functionalization, and post-treatment methods of PEDOT nanofibers. Furthermore, the review identifies current challenges, future directions, and potential strategies to address scalability, reproducibility, stability, and integration into practical devices, offering a comprehensive resource on conductive nanofibers. Reservoir computing is a recent bio-inspired approach for processing time-dependent signals. It has enabled a breakthrough in analog information processing, with several experiments, both electronic and optical, demonstrating state-of-the-art performances for hard tasks such as speech recognition, time series prediction and nonlinear channel equalization. A proof-of-principle experiment using a linear optical circuit on a photonic chip to process digital signals was recently reported. Here we present a photonic implementation of a reservoir computer based on a coherently driven passive fiber cavity processing analog signals. Our experiment has error rate as low or lower than previous experiments on a wide variety of tasks, and also has lower power consumption. Furthermore, the analytical model describing our experiment is also of interest, as it constitutes a very simple high performance reservoir computer algorithm. The present experiment, given its good performances, low energy consumption and conceptual simplicity, confirms the great potential of photonic reservoir computing for information processing applications ranging from artificial intelligence to telecommunications, Comment: none

Reservoir computing is an information processing technique, derived from the theory of neural networks, which is easy to implement in hardware. Several reservoir computer hardware implementations have been realized recently with performance comparable to digital implementations, which demonstrated the potential of reservoir computing for ultrahigh bandwidth signal processing tasks. In all these implementations however the signal pre-processing necessary to efficiently address the reservoir was performed digitally. Here we show how this digital pre-processing can be replaced by an analog input layer. We study both numerically and experimentally to what extent the pre-processing can be replaced by a modulation of the input signal by either a single sine-wave or by a sum of two sine functions, since harmonic oscillations are particularly easy to generate in hardware. We find that the modulation by a single sine gives performance worse than state of the art. On the other hand, on many -but not all- tasks, the modulation by two sines gives performances comparable to the state of the art. The present work thus represents an important step towards fully autonomous, ultrahigh bandwidth analog reservoir computers., Comment: submitted to New Journal of Physics

Reservoir computing is a new, powerful and flexible machine learning technique that is easily implemented in hardware. Recently, by using a time-multiplexed architecture, hardware reservoir computers have reached performance comparable to digital implementations. Operating speeds allowing for real time information operation have been reached using optoelectronic systems. At present the main performance bottleneck is the readout layer which uses slow, digital postprocessing. We have designed an analog readout suitable for time-multiplexed optoelectronic reservoir computers, capable of working in real time. The readout has been built and tested experimentally on a standard benchmark task. Its performance is better than non-reservoir methods, with ample room for further improvement. The present work thereby overcomes one of the major limitations for the future development of hardware reservoir computers., Comment: to appear in NIPS 2012

Reservoir Computing is a novel computing paradigm which uses a nonlinear recurrent dynamical system to carry out information processing. Recent electronic and optoelectronic Reservoir Computers based on an architecture with a single nonlinear node and a delay loop have shown performance on standardized tasks comparable to state-of-the-art digital implementations. Here we report an all-optical implementation of a Reservoir Computer, made of off-the-shelf components for optical telecommunications. It uses the saturation of a semiconductor optical amplifier as nonlinearity. The present work shows that, within the Reservoir Computing paradigm, all-optical computing with state-of-the-art performance is possible.

18. Weber's law implies neural discharge more regular than a Poisson process

Weber's law is one of the basic laws in psychophysics, but the link between this psychophysical behavior and the neuronal response has not yet been established. In this paper, we carried out an analysis on the spike train statistics when Weber's law holds, and found that the efferent spike train of a single neuron is less variable than a Poisson process. For population neurons, Weber's law is satisfied only when the population size is small (< 10 neurons). However, if the population neurons share a weak correlation in their discharges and individual neuronal spike train is more regular than a Poisson process, Weber's law is true without any restriction on the population size. Biased competition attractor network also demonstrates that the coefficient of variation of interspike interval in the winning pool should be less than one for the validity of Weber's law. The aim of this study was to investigate the ecotoxicity of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics (MPs) in two marine zooplankton: the crustacean Artemia franciscana and the cnidarian Aurelia sp. (common jellyfish). To achieve this goal, (i) MP uptake, (ii) immobility, and (iii) behavior (swimming speed, pulsation mode) of crustacean larval stages and jellyfish ephyrae exposed to MPs concentrations (1, 10, 100 mg/L) were assessed for 24 h. Using traditional and novel techniques, i.e., epifluorescence microscopy and 3D holotomography (HT), PVDF and PLA MPs were found in the digestive systems of the crustaceans and in the gelatinous tissue of jellyfish. Immobility was not affected in either organism, while a significant behavioral alteration in terms of pulsation mode was found in jellyfish after exposure to both PVDF and PLA MPs. Moreover, PLA MPs exposure in jellyfish induced a toxic effect (EC50: 77.43 mg/L) on the behavioral response. This study provides new insights into PLA and PVDF toxicity with the potential for a large impact on the marine ecosystem, since jellyfish play a key role in the marine food chain. However, further investigations incorporating additional species belonging to other trophic levels are paramount to better understand and clarify the impact of such polymers at micro scale in the marine environment. These findings suggest that although PVDF and PLA have been recently proposed as innovative and, in the case of PLA, biodegradable polymers, their effects on marine biota should not be underestimated.

In this paper we performed the deposition and self-assembly of a Pd-cyclometallated compound on Ag(1 1 0) surface for the first time. The system is investigated from the morphological and chemical point of view by scanning tunneling microscopy and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, respectively, and the results are validated by ab-initio calculations. Our combined experimental and theoretical study aims at elucidating the atomistic details of the chemical steps following Pd cyclometallate deposition on the metallic substrate. To do that, we analyze the electronic and chemical properties of the species present on the surface at the end of the preparation process at room temperature and at 150 °C. We observe an unexpected complex chemistry: on one side, the organometallic molecules are found to dissociate into fragments, forming a well-ordered metal–carbon network; on the other side, Pd atoms become buried in the bulk of the metal substrate following metal exchange with surface Ag atoms. The details of this mechanistic study reveal the active role played by the metal substrate in promoting the chemistry of the deposited Pd cyclometallates and could open new perspectives for the application of this class of materials in heterogeneous catalysis.

When imaged by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at constant current under nontopographic conditions, nanosized MgO islands grown on Ag(100) may show a fractal dark internal structure and/or appear embedded in the surface. On the contrary, when imaged under topographic conditions, the same islands appear as nearly flat plateaus. Islands showing different contrast and a different contrast dependence on sample bias have been often reported in the literature, but a thorough explanation is still missing. Here we demonstrate, on the basis of of experimental data and computational results, that such structure is due to the accumulation of oxygen at the MgO islands-substrate interface. Interestingly, interfacial oxygen concentrates at the center of the islands.

Due to its biocompatibility, TiO2 is a relevant material for the study of bio-interfaces. Its electronic and chemical properties are influenced by defects, which mainly consist of oxygen vacancies or adsorbed OH groups and which affect, consequently, also the interaction with biological molecules. Here we report on an x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and near edge adsorption fine structure study of glutamic acid (Glu) adsorption on the rutile TiO2(110) surface, either clean or partially hydroxylated. We show that Glu anchors to the surface through a carboxylate group and that the final adsorption state is influenced by the presence of hydroxyl groups on the surface prior to Glu deposition. Indeed, molecules adsorb both in the anionic and in the zwitterionic form, the former species being favored on the hydroxylated substrate.

- Abstract
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are at the frontier of research on graphene materials since the 1D quantum confinement of electrons allows for the opening of an energy gap. GNRs of uniform and well-defined size and shape can be grown using the bottom-up approach, i.e. by surface assisted polymerization of aromatic hydrocarbons. Since the electronic properties of the nanostructures depend on their width and on their edge states, by careful choice of the precursor molecule it is possible to design GNRs with tailored properties. A key issue for their application in nanoelectronics is their stability under operative conditions. Here, we characterize pristine and oxygen-exposed 1.0 nm wide GNRs with a well-defined mixed edge-site sequence (two zig-zag and one armchair) synthesized on Ag(110) from 1,6-dibromo-pyrene precursors. The energy gap and the presence of quantum confined states are investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The effect of oxygen exposure under ultra-high vacuum conditions is inferred from scanning tunneling microscopy images and photoemission spectra. Our results demonstrate that oxygen exposure deeply affects the overall system by interacting both with the nanoribbons and with the substrate; this factor must be considered for supported GNRs under operative conditions.

- Abstract
The current understanding of the dynamics of gas-surface interactions is that all of the energy lost in the collision is transferred to vibrations of the target. Electronic excitations were shown to play a marginal role except for cases in which the impinging particles have energies of several electronvolts. Here we show that this picture does not hold for metal surfaces supporting acoustic surface plasmons. Such loss, dressed with a vibronic structure, is shown to make up a prominent energy transfer route down to the terahertz region for Ne atoms scattering off Cu(111) and is expected to dominate for most metals. This mechanism determines, e.g., the drag force acting on telecommunication satellites, which are typically gold-plated to reduce overheating by sunshine. The electronic excitations can be unambiguously discerned from the vibrational ones under mild hyperthermal impact conditions.

The Pd cyclometallated complex [(5-bromo-2-phenylpyridine)Pd(μ-Cl)]2 is deposited on Ag(1 1 0) at room temperature by sublimation in ultra-high vacuum. The thermal evolution of the system is followed by scanning tunnelling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, while the initial and final configurations are validated by ab-initio calculations. We observe the surface induced dissociation of the molecule and the occurrence of a cross coupling reaction between the two organic fragments, leading to the surface assisted synthesis of diphenyl-bipyridine molecules. Such a process, occurring with low probability at RT, is thermally activated and competes with desorption. At variance with most cross-coupling reactions at surfaces reported in literature, in this case the reactants come from the dissociation of the same compound so that only one precursor is employed, leading to a simplified preparation protocol. The Br and Cl atoms dissociated from the molecule bind to the surface and promote an extended surface reconstruction upon annealing, which was not observed previously upon deposition of halogenated aromatic compounds.
