Finds that most journalism and mass communication programs integrate legal and ethical issues surrounding cyberspace and interactive media into existing courses, especially into ethics and communication law courses, but also into introductory survey courses, communication technology, and reporting classes. Details reasons why some programs do not currently deal with these issues, and notes topics included in cyberspace legal-ethics instruction. (SR)

Issues related to the popularity of and need for local musicians on radio programs in the first half of the 20th century are examined. Topics include the rise of radio stars, prohibitions against the use of recorded music, salaries and versatility of the musical talent, efforts by the American Fedration of Musicians to protect live talent, and trends in the 1940s and 50s toward recorded music.

Homemaking shows were introduced to radio as early as the 1920s as a way to make the medium appealing to female audiences. Programming that carried domestic themes was popular in Midwestern states although it was not unique to the region. Fourteen former radio homemakers serving stations in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota reminisce about their radio days.

In a nascent attempt at providing citizen-produced news content, volunteers produce quality telecasts of local high school sports via a state-of-the-art multimedia production facility that opened in 2011 in Greensburg, Kansas. This study reports the results of structured interviews with Kiowa County (KS) Media Center volunteers that reveal high levels of civic engagement, strong community-oriented motivations, and enthusiastic support for producing other community-journalism projects. The Kiowa County Media Center was set up as a community media that would focus solely on citizen-produced news content. But challenges such as technophobia, citizen’s lack of time to contribute content, and an aging population meant the media center had to reinvent itself and evolve beyond its citizen-journalism mission if it hoped to survive.
