We find that the double-threshold voltage-current characteristics in the insulating regime in the ultra-clean two-valley two-dimensional electron system in SiGe/Si/SiGe quantum wells are promoted by perpendicular magnetic fields, persisting to an order of magnitude lower voltages and considerably higher electron densities compared to the zero-field case. This observation indicates the perpendicular-magnetic-field stabilization of the quantum electron solid.

For an isotropic medium, a magnetic field applied in the Voigt geometry affects the optical properties in the second order only, so its effect is much weaker than in the Faraday geometry. In this work, we show that, under resonant excitation well beyond the linear regime, the situation changes drastically: A small magnetic linear anisotropy considerably increases, and an even stronger new quadrupole dichroism emerges. The latter manifests itself as 90{\deg}-periodic azimuthal dependence of transmission and anisotropic rotation of the probe polarization plane. These effects are described microscopically in a toy model and their symmetry analysis is presented. Both are observed experimentally on the D2 resonance of cesium vapor and agree with the theoretical predictions. The large magnitude of the quadrupole dichroism makes it promising for magnetometric applications and for studying the effects of anisotropic bleaching., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

$\require{mediawiki-texvc}$ We demonstrate that the low symmetry of armchair lateral heterojunction between transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers allows for the mixing of $\mathbf{K}_+$ and $\mathbf{K}_-$ valleys. From the tight binding model we estimate the strength of the valley coupling to be of the order of $0.2$ eV$\cdot{\AA}$ for typical heteropairs. We show that the valley mixing gives rise to the in-plane $g$-factor of localized electrons leading to the spin precession in the in-plane magnetic field. We further study the effects of the valley mixing on the fine structure and dynamics of excitons at type-II lateral heterojunctions. We find that the interplay of the valley mixing and long-range exchange interaction leads to the linear polarization of exciton photoluminescence along the armchair heterojunction with the degree of polarization up to $1/3$ under unpolarized excitation. Application of the in-plane magnetic field of the order of 10$-$100 mT in any direction leads to the depolarization of the photoluminescence., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The concept of nuclear spin temperature has been a cornerstone of the theory of dynamic nuclear spin polarization by electrons in various semiconductor structures for decades. Still, it is not always applicable to strongly localized electrons due to their long spin correlation times. This motivated the use of the oversimplified central spin model for the description of the nuclear spin dynamics in quantum dots. Here, we present a microscopic theory that bridges the gap between these two approaches by describing the nuclear spin thermodynamics for systems with long electron spin correlation times. Importantly, our theory predicts that efficient nuclear spin cooling by strongly localized electrons requires an external magnetic field by far exceeding the local field of nuclear spin-spin interaction, and that the time of the nuclear spin heating by unpolarized electrons may change by several orders of magnitude depending on the magnetic field., Comment: 5+5 pages, 3+1 figures

The optical orientation and alignment of excitons in semiconductor indirect gap quantum dots have been studied theoretically. A special regime is analyzed in which the energy of the hyperfine interaction of an electron with lattice nuclei is small compared to the exchange splitting between bright and dark excitonic levels, but is comparable to the anisotropic exchange splitting of the radiative doublet. The dependencies of degrees of circular and linear polarization on the external magnetic field under resonant excitation of excitons by polarized light are calculated., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure. We describe theoretically the spin Nernst effect for electrons tunneling to a quantum dot from a quantum wire with the heat flowing along it. Such a tunneling spin Nernst effect is shown to take place due to the spin-dependent electron tunneling produced by the spin-orbit coupling. The Coulomb interaction of electrons in the quantum dot is taken into account using nonequilibrium Green's functions and is shown to increase significantly the accumulated spin in a single quantum dot. We have undertaken a search for satellites around edge-on galaxies in the EGIPS catalog, which contains 16551 objects with declinations above -30 deg. We searched for systems with a central galaxy dominating in brightness by at least 1 mag compared to its companions. As a result, we discovered 1097 candidate satellites around 764 EGIPS galaxies with projected distances less than 500 kpc and a radial velocity difference less than 300 km/s. Of these, 757 satellites around 547 central galaxies have radial velocity accuracies higher than 20 km/s and satisfy the gravitationally bound condition. The ensemble of satellites is characterized by an average projected distance of 84 kpc and an average radial velocity dispersion of 103 km/s. Treating small satellites as test particles moving on isotropic orbits around central EGIPS galaxies, we determined the projected (orbital) masses of the edge-on galaxies. Within the luminosity range of 1.3*10^10 to 42*10^{10} Lsun, the total mass of the systems is well described by a linear dependence log(Mp)~0.88*log(g) with an average total mass-to-$K$-band luminosity equal to 17.5+-0.8 Msun/Lsun, which is typical for nearby spiral galaxies such as the Milky Way, M 31 and M 81., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, published in the Astrophysical Bulletin. We report on first observation of spin noise in a strongly birefringent semiconductor -- halide perovskite single crystal MAPbI$_3$. The observed spin noise resonance is ascribed to free holes with a record spin dephasing time of 4 ns. The spin dynamics is found to be affected by the residual light absorption of the crystal providing renormalization of the Larmor frequency. Extended spin noise spectroscopy with rotating magnetic field allowed us not only to evaluate the $g$-factor anisotropy, but also to distinguish two different spin subsystems tentatively associated to twinning of the crystal., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

In this work, we theoretically investigate the optical orientation and alignment of excitons in quantum dots with weak electron-hole exchange interaction and long exciton radiative lifetimes. This particular regime is realized in semiconductor heterosystems where excitons are indirect in the $\boldsymbol r$ or $\boldsymbol k$ space. The main role in the fine structure of excitonic levels in these systems is played by the hyperfine interaction of the electron in the confined exciton and fluctuations of the Overhauser field. Along with it, the effects of nonradiative recombination and exchange interaction are considered. We start with the model of vanishing exchange interaction and nonradiative exciton recombination and then include them into consideration in addition to the strong Overhauser field. In the nanoobjects under study, the polarization properties of the resonant photoluminescence are shown to vary with the external magnetic filed in completely different way as compared with the behaviour of the conventional quantum dot structures., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We propose a concept of quantum dot based light emitting diode that produces circularly polarized light due to the tuning of the exciton fine structure by magnetic field and electron nuclear hyperfine interaction. The device operates under injection of electrons and holes from nonmagnetic contacts in a small field of the order of milliteslas. Its size can be parametrically smaller than the light wavelength, and circular polarization degree of electroluminescence can reach 100%. The proposed concept is compatible with the micropillar cavities, which allows for the deterministic electrical generation of single circularly polarized photons., Comment: 6+4 pages, 3+1 figures

Weak spin-orbit coupling produces very limited current induced spin accumulation in semiconductor nanostructures. We demonstrate a possibility to increase parametrically the spin polarization using the Kondo effect. As a model object we consider a quantum dot side coupled to a quantum wire taking into account the spin dependent electron tunneling from the wire to the dot. Using the nonequilibrium Green's functions, we show that the many body correlations between the quantum dot and the quantum wire can increase the current induced spin accumulation at low temperatures by almost two orders of magnitude for the moderate system parameters. The enhancement is related to the Kondo peak formation in the density of states and the spin instability due to the strong Coulomb interaction. Coherent many-body states are highly promising for robust and scalable quantum information processing. While far-reaching theoretical predictions have been made for various implementations, direct experimental evidence of their appealing properties can be challenging. Here, we demonstrate coherent optical manipulation of the nuclear spin ensemble in the lead halide perovskite semiconductor FAPbBr$_3$ (FA=formamidinium), targeting a long-postulated collective dark state that is insensitive to optical pumping. Via optical orientation of localized hole spins we drive the nuclear many-body system into an entangled state, requiring a weak magnetic field of only a few Millitesla strength at cryogenic temperatures. During its fast build-up, the nuclear polarization along the optical axis remains small, while the transverse nuclear spin fluctuations are strongly reduced, corresponding to spin squeezing as evidenced by a strong violation of the generalized nuclear squeezing-inequality with $\xi_s < 0.3$. The dark state evidenced in this process corresponds to an approximately 750-body entanglement between the nuclei. Dark nuclear spin states can be exploited to store quantum information benefiting from their long-lived many-body coherence and to perform quantum measurements with a precision beyond the standard limit.

The exciton recombination and spin dynamics in (In,Al)As/AlAs quantum dots (QDs) with indirect band gap and type-I band alignment are studied. The negligible (less than $0.2~\mu$eV) value of the anisotropic exchange interaction in these QDs prevents a mixing of the excitonic basis states with pure spin and allows for the formation of spin polarized bright excitons for quasi-resonant circularly polarized excitation. In a longitudinal magnetic field, the recombination and spin dynamics of the excitons are controlled by the hyperfine interaction between the electron and nuclear spins. A QD blockade by dark excitons is observed in magnetic field eliminating the impact of the nuclear spin fluctuations. A kinetic equation model, which accounts for the population dynamics of the bright and dark exciton states as well as for the spin dynamics, has been developed, which allows for a quantitative description of the experimental data., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Quantum measurement back action is fundamentally unavoidable when manipulating electron spins. Here we demonstrate that this back action can be efficiently exploited to tune the spin relaxation of localized electrons induced by the hyperfine interaction. In optical pump-probe experiments, powerful probe pulses suppress the spin relaxation of electrons on Si donors in an InGaAs epilayer due to the quantum Zeno effect. By contrast, an increase of the probe power leads to a speed up of the spin relaxation for electrons in InGaAs quantum dots due to the quantum anti-Zeno effect. Heterobilayers consisting of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers can host optically bright interlayer excitons with intriguing properties such as ultralong lifetimes and pronounced circular polarization of their photoluminescence due to valley polarization, which can be induced by circularly polarized excitation or applied magnetic fields. Here, we report on the observation of an intrinsic valley-magnetophonon resonance for localized interlayer excitons promoted by invervalley hole scattering. It leads to a resonant increase of the photoluminescence polarization degree at the same field of 24.2 Tesla for H-type and R-type stacking configurations despite their vastly different excitonic energy splittings. As a microscopic mechanism of the hole intervalley scattering we identify the scattering with chiral TA phonons of MoSe$_2$ between excitonic states mixed by the long-range electron hole exchange interaction., Comment: 7+5 pages, 2+0 figures

We describe the effects of the quantum back action under continuous optical measurement of electron spins in quantum dots. We consider the system excitation by elliptically polarized light close to the trion resonance, which allows for the simultaneous spin orientation and measurement. We microscopically demonstrate that the nuclei-induced spin relaxation can be both suppressed and accelerated by the continuous spin measurement due to the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects, respectively. Our theoretical predictions can be directly compared with the future experimental results and straightforwardly generalized for the pump-probe experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

It is known that linear birefringence of the medium essentially hinders measuring the Faraday effect. For this reason, optically anisotropic materials have never been considered as objects of the Faraday-rotation-based spin noise spectroscopy (SNS). We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that strong optical anisotropy that may badly suppress the regular Faraday rotation of the medium, practically does not affect the measurement of the spatially uncorrelated spin fluctuations. An important consequence of this result is that the Faraday-rotation noise should be also insensitive to spatially nonuniform birefringence, which makes the SNS applicable to a wide class of optically anisotropic and inhomogeneous materials. We also show that the birefringent media provide additional opportunity to measure spatial spin correlations. Results of the experimental measurements of the spin-noise spectra performed on 4$f$--4$f$ transitions of Nd$^{3+}$ ions in the CaWO$_4$ and LiYF$_4$ crystals well agree with the theory., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

How strong are quantitative contributions of the key natural modes of climate variability and the anthropogenic factor characterized by the changes of the radiative forcing of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to the trends of the surface air temperature at different latitudes of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres on various time intervals? Such contributions to trends are estimated here from observation data with the simplest empirical models. Trivariate autoregressive models are fitted to the data since the 19th century and used to assess the impact of the anthropogenic forcing together with different natural climate modes including Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, El-Nino / Southern Oscillation, Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Antarctic Oscillation. For relatively short intervals of the length of two or three decades, we note considerable contributions of the climate variability modes which are comparable to the contributions of the greenhouse gases and even exceed the latter. For longer intervals of about half a century and greater, the contributions of greenhouse gases dominate at all latitudes as follows from the present analysis of data for polar, middle and tropical regions., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

We consider the central spin model in the box approximation taking into account external magnetic field and anisotropy of the hyperfine interaction. From the exact Hamiltonian diagonalization we obtain analytical expressions for the nuclear spin dynamics in the limit of many nuclear spins. We predict the nuclear spin precession in zero magnetic field for the case of anisotropic interaction between electron and nuclear spins. We calculate and describe the nuclear spin noise spectra in the thermodynamic equilibrium. We describe the effects of the crossing of the exciton levels in moire quantum dots in external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the unpolarized light can create significant dynamic valley polarization of interlayer excitons in the conditions where the Zeeman energy is much smaller than the thermal energy. The angular momentum is gained by the excitons from the nuclear spin fluctuations. In the $n$-type moire quantum dots for the typical experimental parameters, the unpolarized light can lead to the complete valley polarization of the resident electrons., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We put forward a mechanism for current induced spin polarization for a hole in a quantum dot side-coupled to a quantum wire, that is based on the spin-orbit splitting of the valence band. We predict that in a stark contrast with the traditional mechanisms based on the linear in momentum spin-orbit coupling, an exponentially small bias applied to the quantum wire with heavy holes is enough to create the 100% spin polarization of a localized light hole. Microscopically, the effect is related with the formation of chiral quasi bound states and the spin dependent tunneling of holes from the quantum wire to the quantum dot. A novel spin orientation mechanism - dynamic electron spin polarization has been recently suggested in Phys. Rev. Lett. $\mathbf{125}$, 156801 (2020). It takes place for unpolarized optical excitation in weak magnetic fields of the order of a few millitesla. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the dynamic electron spin polarization degree changes sign as a function of time, strength of the applied magnetic field and its direction. We demonstrate the realization of the resonant spin amplification (RSA) effect in Faraday geometry where a magnetic field is applied parallel to the optically induced spin polarization so that no RSA is expected. However, model considerations predict that it can be realized for a central spin interacting with a fluctuating spin environment. As a demonstrator, we choose an ensemble of singly-charged (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots, where the resident electron spins interact with the surrounding nuclear spins. The observation of RSA in Faraday geometry requires intense pump pulses with a high repetition rate and can be enhanced by means of the spin-inertia effect. We obtain a compact analytical solution for the nonlinear equation for the nuclear spin dynamics in the central spin box model in the limit of many nuclear spins. The total nuclear spin component along the external magnetic field is conserved and the two perpendicular components precess or oscillate depending on the electron spin polarization, with the frequency, determined by the nuclear spin polarization. We demonstrate that nuclear spin fluctuations lead to the electric current noise in the mesoscopic samples of organic semiconductors showing the pronounced magnetoresistance in weak fields. For the bipolaron and electron-hole mechanisms of organic magnetoresistance, the current noise spectrum consists of the high frequency peak related to the nuclear spin precession in the Knight field of the charge carriers and the low frequency peak related to the nuclear spin relaxation. We realize p-p'-p junctions in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) devices, and use magneto-transport measurements to study the equilibration and transmission of edge states at the interfaces of regions with different charge densities. We observe both full equilibration, where all edge channels equilibrate and are equally partitioned at the interfaces, and partial equilibration, where only equilibration only takes place among modes of the same spin polarization. Furthermore, the inner p'-region with low-doping level in the junction can function as a filter for highly doped p-regions which demonstrates gate-tunable transmission of edge channels.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a relativistic effect, where an electron moving in an electric field experiences an effective magnetic field in its rest frame. In crystals without inversion symmetry, it lifts the spin degeneracy and leads to many magnetic, spintronic and topological phenomena and applications. In bulk materials, SOC strength is a constant that cannot be modified. Here we demonstrate SOC and intrinsic spin-splitting in atomically thin InSe, which can be modified over an unprecedentedly large range. From quantum oscillations, we establish that the SOC parameter \alpha is thickness-dependent; it can be continuously modulated over a wide range by an out-of-plane electric field, achieving intrinsic spin splitting tunable between 0 and 20 meV. Surprisingly, \alpha could be enhanced by an order of magnitude in some devices, suggesting that SOC can be further manipulated. Our work highlights the extraordinary tunability of SOC in 2D materials, which can be harnessed for in operando spintronic and topological devices and applications.

Theory of spin noise in low dimensional systems and bulk semiconductors is reviewed. Spin noise is usually detected by optical means, continuously measuring the rotation angle of the polarization plane of the probe beam passing through the sample. Spin noise spectra yield rich information about the spin properties of the system including, for example, $g$-factors of the charge carriers, spin relaxation times, parameters of the hyperfine interaction, spin-orbit interaction constants, frequencies and widths of the optical resonances. The review describes basic models of spin noise, methods of its theoretical description, and their relation with the experimental results. We also discuss the relation between the spin noise spectroscopy, the strong and weak quantum measurements and the spin flip Raman scattering, and analyze similar effects including manifestations of the charge, current and valley polarization fluctuations in the optical response. Possible directions for further development of the spin noise spectroscopy are outlined., Comment: Accepted to Phys. Usp. Based on SDSS data, we consider the fraction of active galactic nuclei among polar-ring galaxies. We have found evidence for an excess of Seyfert galaxies and LINERs among polar-ring galaxies compared to ordinary objects. The observed nuclear activity of polar-ring galaxies may be associated with the accretion of gas from the region of the polar structures onto the central galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Chemical interaction and changes in local electronic structure of Cr, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu transition metals (TMs) upon formation of an $Al_{8}Co_{17}Cr_{17}Cu_{8}Fe_{17}Ni_{33}$ compositionally complex alloy (CCA) have been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that upon CCA formation, occupancy of the Cr, Co and Ni 3d states changes and the maximum of the occupied and empty Ni 3d states density shifts away from Fermi level ($E_f$) by 0.5 and 0.6 eV, respectively, whereas the Cr 3d empty states maximum shifts towards $E_f$ by 0.3 eV, compared to the corresponding pure metals. The absence of significant charge transfer between the elements was established, pointing to the balancing of the 3d states occupancy change by involvement of delocalized 4s and 4p states into the charge redistribution. Despite the expected formation of strong Al-TMs covalent bonds, the Al role in the transformation of the TMs 3d electronic states is negligible. The work demonstrates a decisive role of Cr in the Ni local electronic structure transformation and suggests formation of directional Ni-Cr bonds with covalent character. These findings can be helpful for tuning deformation properties and phase stability of the CCA.
