Search

The study of the elusive hot component (T ≳ 107 K) of the Milky Way circumgalactic medium (CGM) is a novel topic for understanding Galactic formation and evolution. In this work, we use the stacking technique through 46 lines of sight with Chandra ACIS-S HETG totaling over 10 Ms of exposure time and nine lines of sight with ACIS-S LETG observations totaling over 1 Ms of exposure time, to study in absorption the presence of highly ionized metals arising from the supervirial temperature phase of the CGM. Focusing in the spectral range 4–8 Å, we were able to confirm the presence of this hot phase with high significance. We detected transitions of Si XIV K α (with a total significance of 6.0σ) and, for the first time, S XVI K α (total significance of 4.8σ) in the rest frame of our own galaxy. For S XVI K α we found a column density of 1.50 − 0.38 + 0.44 × 10 16 cm − 2 . For Si XIV K α we measured a column density of 0.87 ± 0.16 × 1016 cm−2. The lines of sight used in this work are spread across the sky, probing widely separated regions of the CGM. Therefore, our results indicate that this newly discovered hot medium extends throughout the halo and is not related only to the Galactic bubbles. The hot gas location, distribution, and covering factor, however, remain unknown. This component might contribute significantly to the missing baryons and metals in the Milky Way.

We analyze image and spectral data from $\approx$365~ks of observations from the {\it Chandra} X-ray Observatory of the nearby, edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 253 to constrain properties of the hot phase of the outflow. We focus our analysis on the $-$1.1 to $+$0.63 kpc region of the outflow and define several regions for spectral extraction where we determine best-fit temperatures and metal abundances. We find that the temperatures and electron densities peak in the central $\sim$250 pc region of the outflow and decrease with distance. These temperature and density profiles are in disagreement with an adiabatic spherically expanding starburst wind model and suggest the presence of additional physics such as mass loading and non-spherical outflow geometry. Our derived temperatures and densities yield few-Myr cooling times in the nuclear region, which may imply that the hot gas can undergo bulk radiative cooling as it escapes along the minor axis. Our metal abundances of O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe all peak in the central region and decrease with distance along the outflow, with the exception of Ne which maintains a flat distribution. The metal abundances indicate significant dilution outside of the starburst region. We also find estimates on the mass outflow rates which are $2.8\:M_{\odot}/\rm{yr}$ in the northern outflow and $3.2\:M_{\odot}/\rm{yr}$ in the southern outflow. Additionally, we detect emission from charge exchange and find it has a significant contribution ($20-42$\%) to the total broad-band ($0.5-7$ keV) X-ray emission in the central and southern regions of the outflow., 15 pages, 9 figures; submitted (19 September 2022), accepted ApJ (22 November 2022)

The number of baryons hosted in the disks of galaxies (stars and interstellar gas and dust) is lower than expected based on the mass of their dark-matter halos and the fraction of baryon-to-total matter in the universe, giving rise to the so called galaxy missing-baryon problem. The presence of cool circum-galactic matter gravitationally bound to the galaxy up to distances of at least ten times the size of the galaxy’s disk, mitigates the problem but is far from being sufficient for its solution. It has instead been suggested that the galaxy missing baryon may hide in a much hotter gaseous phase of the circum-galactic medium, possibly at the halo virial temperature and co-existing with the cool phase. However, current mass estimates of this possible hot phase are only loose lower limits. Here we exploit the best available X-ray spectroscopic data of known cool circum-galactic systems to show that the galaxy missing baryonic mass is indeed found in a hot medium surrounding the disks of galaxies and permeating their entire halos, at temperatures consistent with their virial temperatures. Main tracers of this hot medium are highly ionized light elements that only retain one or two electrons and that are only visible in the X-rays. Our measurements solve the long-standing galaxy missing baryon problems and contribute importantly to the understanding of the continuous cycle of baryons in-and-out of galaxies throughout the life of the universe.

The gamma-ray emitting galaxy SBS 0846+513 has been classified as a Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 from its spectroscopy, and on that basis it was thought likely to have a small central black hole hosted in a spiral galaxy. But very few of the gamma-ray Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s have high-resolution imaging of their hosts, so it is unknown how those expectations hold up for the gamma-emitting class. We have observed this galaxy in the J-band with the Large Binocular Telescope's LUCI1 camera and the ARGOS adaptive optics system. We estimate its black hole mass to lie between $7.70 \leq \log \frac{\text{M}}{\text{M}_\odot} \leq 8.19$, using the correlation with bulge luminosity, or $7.96 \leq \log \frac{\text{M}}{\text{M}_\odot} \leq 8.16$ using the correlation with S\'{e}rsic index, putting its mass at the high end of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 range. These estimates are independent of the Broad Line Region viewing geometry and avoid underestimates due to looking down the jet axis. Its host shows evidence of a bulge + disc structure, both from two-dimensional modeling and isophote shape, in keeping with the expectations. Mergers and interactions appear to be common among the gamma-ray Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s, and we see some circumstantial evidence for companion galaxies or disturbed features in the host., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. We present results of time-series analysis of the first year of the Fairall 9 intensive disc-reverberation campaign. We used Swift and the Las Cumbres Observatory global telescope network to continuously monitor Fairall 9 from X-rays to near-infrared at a daily to subdaily cadence. The cross-correlation function between bands provides evidence for a lag spectrum consistent with the τ ∝ λ4/3 scaling expected for an optically thick, geometrically thin blackbody accretion disc. Decomposing the flux into constant and variable components, the variable component’s spectral energy distribution is slightly steeper than the standard accretion disc prediction. We find evidence at the Balmer edge in both the lag and flux spectra for an additional bound-free continuum contribution that may arise from reprocessing in the broad-line region. The inferred driving light curve suggests two distinct components, a rapidly variable (100 d) component with an opposite lag to the reverberation signal.

The magnificent bubbles at the Galactic center provide a great channel to understand the effects of feedback on galaxy evolution. The newly discovered eROSITA bubbles show enhanced X-ray emission from the shells around bubbles. Previous works assumed that the X-ray emitting gas in the shells has a single temperature component and that they trace the shock-heated lower-temperature Galactic halo gas. Here we show that the thermal structure of the eROSITA bubble shells is more complex. Using Suzaku observations we find with high confidence that the X-ray emission from the shells is best described by a two-temperature thermal model, one near Galaxy's virial temperature at ~0.2 keV and the other at super-virial temperatures ranging between kT = 0.4-1.1 keV. Furthermore, we show that temperatures of the virial and super-virial components are similar in the shells and in the ambient medium, although the emission measures are significantly higher in the shells. We argue that the X-ray bright eROSITA bubble shells are the signature of compressed isothermal radiative shocks. The age of the bubbles is constrained to 70-130 Myr. This expansion timescale, as well as the observed non-solar Ne/O and Mg/O ratios, favor the stellar feedback models for the formation of the Galactic bubbles, settling a long-standing debate on the origin of the Galactic bubbles.

The X-ray bright bubbles at the Galactic Center provide an opportunity to understand the effects of feedback on galaxy evolution. The shells of the eROSITA bubbles show enhanced X-ray emission over the sky background. Previously, these shells were assumed to have a single temperature component and to trace the shock-heated lower-temperature halo gas. Using Suzaku observations, we show that the X-ray emission of the shells is more complex and best described by a two-temperature thermal model: one component close to the Galaxy's virial temperature and the other at super-virial temperatures. Furthermore, we demonstrate that temperatures of the virial and super-virial components are similar in the shells and in the ambient medium, although the emission measures are significantly higher in the shells. This leads us to conclude that the eROSITA bubble shells are X-ray bright because they trace denser gas, not because they are hotter. Given that the pre- and post-shock temperatures are similar and the compression ratio of the shock is high, we rule out that the bubble shells trace adiabatic shocks, in contrast to what was assumed in previous studies. We report on the discovery of a UV absorption counterpart of a low-ionization X-ray ultra-fast outflow (UFO) in the Narrow-Line Seyfert-1 galaxy IRAS 17020+4544. This UV signature of the UFO is seen as a narrow and blueshifted Lyman-alpha absorption feature in the far-UV spectrum, taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The Lyman-alpha feature is found to be outflowing with a velocity of -23430 km/s (0.078 c). We carry out high-resolution UV spectroscopy and photoionization modeling to study the UFO that is seen in the HTS/COS spectrum. The results of our modeling show that the UV UFO corresponds to a low-ionization, low-velocity component of the X-ray UFO found previously with XMM-Newton's Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS). The other higher-velocity and higher-ionization components of the X-ray UFOs are not significantly detected in the HST/COS spectrum, consistent with predictions of our photoionization calculations. The multiple ionization and velocity components of the UFOs in IRAS 17020+4544 suggest a scenario where a powerful primary UFO entrains and shocks the ambient medium, resulting in formation of weaker secondary UFO components, such as the one found in the UV band., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ), 13 pages, 5 figures

We report velocity-delay maps for prominent broad emission lines, Ly_alpha, CIV, HeII and H_beta, in the spectrum of NGC5548. The emission-line responses inhabit the interior of a virial envelope. The velocity-delay maps reveal stratified ionization structure. The HeII response inside 5-10 light-days has a broad single-peaked velocity profile. The Ly_alpha, CIV, and H_beta responses peak inside 10 light-days, extend outside 20 light-days, and exhibit a velocity profile with two peaks separated by 5000 km/s in the 10 to 20 light-day delay range. The velocity-delay maps show that the M-shaped lag vs velocity structure found in previous cross-correlation analysis is the signature of a Keplerian disk with a well-defined outer edge at R=20 light-days. The outer wings of the M arise from the virial envelope, and the U-shaped interior of the M is the lower half of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane. The far-side response is weaker than that from the near side, so that we see clearly the lower half, but only faintly the upper half, of the velocity--delay ellipse. The delay tau=(R/c)(1-sin(i))=5 light-days at line center is from the near edge of the inclined ring, giving the inclination i=45 deg. A black hole mass of M=7x10^7 Msun is consistent with the velocity-delay structure. A barber-pole pattern with stripes moving from red to blue across the CIV and possibly Ly_alpha line profiles suggests the presence of azimuthal structure rotating around the far side of the broad-line region and may be the signature of precession or orbital motion of structures in the inner disk. Further HST observations of NGC 5548 over a multi-year timespan but with a cadence of perhaps 10 days rather than 1 day could help to clarify the nature of this new AGN phenomenon., 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press

In this work we present the results of the survey carried out on one of the deepest X-ray fields observed by the XMM-Newton satellite. The 1.75 Ms Ultra Narrow Deep Field (XMM175UNDF) survey is made by 13 observations taken over 2 years with a total exposure time of 1.75 Ms (1.372 Ms after flare-filtered) in a field of $30' \times 30' $ centered around the blazar 1ES 1553+113. We stacked the 13 observations reaching flux limits of $4.03 \times 10^{-16} $, $1.3 \times 10^{-15}$, and $9.8 \times 10^{-16}\, erg\, s^{-1}\, cm^{-2}$ in the soft $(0.2 - 2\, \mathrm{keV})$, hard $(2 - 12\, \mathrm{keV})$, and full $(0.2 - 12\, \mathrm{keV})$ bands, respectively. Using a conservative threshold of Maximum Likelihood significance of $ML \geq 6$, corresponding to $3\sigma$, we detected 301 point-sources for which we derived positions, fluxes in different bands, and hardness ratios. Thanks to an optical follow-up carried out using the 10.4m the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) on the same field in the $u'g'r'i'z'$ bands, combined with WISE/2MASS IR data; we identified 244 optical/IR counterpart candidates for our X-ray sources and estimated their X-ray luminosities, redshift distribution, X-ray/optical $-$ X-ray/IR flux ratios, and absolute magnitudes. Finally, we divided this subsample in 40 non-active sources and 204 AGNs, of which 139 are classified as Seyfert galaxies and 41 as Quasars., Comment: 30 pages, 19 figures, to be published in ApJ

We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The dataset includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the H$\beta$, C IV, and Ly$\alpha$ broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like H$\beta$ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C IV and Ly$\alpha$ BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C IV and Ly$\alpha$ emission arising at smaller radii than the H$\beta$ emission. Using the three lines, we make three independent black hole mass measurements, all of which are consistent. Combining these results gives a joint inference of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 7.64^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$. We examine the effect of using the $V$ band instead of the UV continuum light curve on the results and find a size difference that is consistent with the measured UV-optical time lag, but the other structural and kinematic parameters remain unchanged, suggesting that the $V$ band is a suitable proxy for the ionizing continuum when exploring the BLR structure and kinematics. Finally, we compare the H$\beta$ results to similar models of data obtained in 2008 when the AGN was at a lower luminosity state. We find that the size of the emitting region increased during this time period, but the geometry and black hole mass remain unchanged, which confirms that the BLR kinematics suitably gauge the gravitational field of the central black hole., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

In 2014 the NGC 5548 Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign discovered a two-month anomaly when variations in the absorption and emission lines decorrelated from continuum variations. During this time the soft X-ray part of the intrinsic spectrum had been strongly absorbed by a line-of-sight (LOS) obscurer, which was interpreted as the upper part of a disk wind. Our first paper showed that changes in the LOS obscurer produce the decorrelation between the absorption lines and the continuum. A second study showed that the base of the wind shields the BLR, leading to the emission-line decorrelation. In that study, we proposed the wind is normally transparent with no effect on the spectrum. Changes in the wind properties alter its shielding and affect the SED striking the BLR, producing the observed decorrelations. In this work, we investigate the impact of a translucent wind on the emission lines. We simulate the obscuration using XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST observations to determine the physical characteristics of the wind. We find that a translucent wind can contribute a part of the He II and Fe K? emission. It has a modest optical depth to electron scattering, which explains the fainter far-side emission in the observed velocity delay maps. The wind produces the very broad base seen in the UV emission lines and may also be present in the Fe K? line. Using Suzaku data, we had found a $3.4\sigma$ evidence for the X-ray emitting warm-hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) in the L$^\star$ galaxy NGC 3221. Here we present XMM-Newton data and outline an efficient, rigorous and well-defined method to extract the faint CGM signal. We confirm the CGM detection at $4\sigma$ significance within 30-200 kpc of the galaxy. We claim with $99.62\%$ confidence that the CGM is extended beyond $150$ kpc. The average temperature of the CGM is 2.0$^{+0.2}_{-0.3} \times 10^6$ K, but it is not isothermal. We find suggestive evidence for a declining temperature gradient out to 125 kpc and for super-virial temperature within 100 kpc. While a super-virial temperature component has been detected in the Milky Way CGM, this is the first time a temperature gradient has been observed in the warm-hot CGM of any spiral galaxy. The emission measure profile is well-fit with either a $\beta-$ model or a constant density profile. Deeper data are required to constrain the temperature and density profiles. We also confirm the Suzaku result that the warm-hot CGM is one of the most massive baryon components of NGC 3221 and can account for the missing galactic baryons., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJ

Most of the baryonic mass in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of a spiral galaxy is believed to be warm-hot, with temperature around $10^6$K. The narrow OVI absorption lines probe a somewhat cooler component at $\log \rm T(K)= 5.5$, but broad OVI absorbers have the potential to probe the hotter CGM. Here we present 376 ks Chandra LETG observations of a carefully selected galaxy in which the presence of broad OVI together with the non-detection of Lya was indicative of warm-hot gas. The strongest line expected to be present at $\approx 10^6$K is OVII $\lambda 21.602$. There is a hint of an absorption line at the redshifted wavelength, but the line is not detected with better than $2\sigma$ significance. A physical model, taking into account strengths of several other lines, provides better constraints. Our best-fit absorber model has $\log \rm T(K) =6.3\pm 0.2$ and $\log \rm N_{H} (cm^{-2})=20.7^{+0.3}_{-0.5}$. These parameters are consistent with the warm-hot plasma model based on UV observations; other OVI models of cooler gas phases are ruled out at better than $99$% confidence. Thus we have suggestive, but not conclusive evidence for the broad OVI absorber probing the warm-hot gas from the shallow observations of this pilot program. About 800ks of XMM-Newton observations will detect the expected absorption lines of OVII and OVIII unequivocally. We utilize deep Chandra X-ray Observatory imaging and spectra of M82, the prototype of a starbursting galaxy with a multiphase wind, to map the hot plasma properties along the minor axis of the galaxy. We extract spectra from 11 regions up to 2.5 kpc from the starbursting midplane and model the data as a multi-temperature, optically thin thermal plasma with contributions from a non-thermal (power-law) component and from charge exchange (CX). We examine the gradients in best-fit parameters, including the intrinsic column density, plasma temperature, metal abundances, and number density of the hot gas as a function of distance from the M82 nucleus. We find that the temperatures and number densities of the warm-hot and hot plasma peak at the starbursting ridge and decreases along the minor axis. The temperature and density profiles are inconsistent with spherical adiabatic expansion of a super-heated wind and suggest mass loading and mixing of the hot phase with colder material. Non-thermal emission is detected in all of the regions considered, and CX comprises 8-25% of the total absorption-corrected, broad-band (0.5-7 keV) X-ray flux. We show that the abundances of O, Ne, Mg, and Fe are roughly constant across the regions considered, while Si and S peak within 500 pc of the central starburst. These findings support a direct connection between the M82 superwind and the warm-hot, metal-rich circumgalactic medium (CGM)., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, ApJ in press

The BL Lacertae object OJ 287 (z = 0.306) has unique double-peaked optical outbursts every ∼12 yr, and it presents one of the best cases for a small-separation binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) system, with an extremely massive primary . However, the host galaxy is unresolved or only marginally detected in all optical studies so far, indicating a large deviation from the bulge mass-SMBH mass relation. We have obtained deep, high spatial resolution i-band and K-band images of OJ 287 when the target was in a low state, which enable us to detect the host galaxy. We find the broadband photometry of the host to be consistent with an early-type galaxy with M R =-22.5 and M K =-25.2, placing it in the middle of the host galaxy luminosity distribution of BL Lacertae objects. The central supermassive black hole is clearly overmassive for a host galaxy of that luminosity, but not unprecedented, given some recent findings of other "overmassive"black holes in nearby galaxies. © 2020. We present detections of 21-cm emission from neutral hydrogen (HI) in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the local edge-on galaxies NGC 891 and NGC 4565 using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). With our 5$\sigma$ sensitivity of $8.2 \times 10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ calculated over a 20 km s$^{-1}$ channel, we achieve $>5\sigma$ detections out to $90-120$ kpc along the minor axes. The velocity width of the CGM emission is as large as that of the disk $\approx 500$ km s$^{-1}$, indicating the existence of a diffuse component permeating the halo. We compare our GBT measurements with interferometric data from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). The WSRT maps the HI emission from the disk at high S/N but has limited surface brightness sensitivity at the angular scales probed with the GBT. After convolving the WSRT data to the spatial resolution of the GBT (FWHM = 9.1$'$), we find that the emission detected by the WSRT accounts for $48^{+15}_{-25}$% ($58^{+4}_{-18}$%) of the total flux recovered by the GBT from the CGM of NGC 891(NGC 4565). The existence of significant GBT-only flux suggests the presence of a large amount of diffuse, low column density HI emission in the CGM. For reasonable assumptions, the extended diffuse HI could account for $5.2\pm0.9$% and $2.0\pm0.8$% of the total HI emission of NGC 891 and NGC 4565., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, published in ApJ

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) is one of the few classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) harboring powerful relativistic jets and detected in $\gamma$ rays. NLS1s are well-known X-ray sources. While in non-jetted sources the origin of this X-ray emission may be a hot corona surrounding the accretion disk, in jetted objects, especially beamed ones, the contribution of corona and relativistic jet is difficult to disentangle without a proper sampling of the hard X-ray emission. For this reason, we observed with \textit{NuSTAR} the first four NLS1s detected at high energy $\gamma$ rays. These data, along with \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{Swift/XRT} observations, confirmed that X rays originate both in the jet and in the accretion disk corona. Time variability in hard X rays furthermore suggests that, as observed in flat-spectrum radio quasars, the dissipation region during flares could change its position from source to source, and it can be located both inside and outside the broad-line region. We find that jetted NLS1s, and other blazars as well, seem not to follow the classical fundamental plane of black hole activity, which therefore should be used as a black hole mass estimator in blazars with extreme care only. We present a blind search for doublet intergalactic metal absorption with a method dubbed `agnostic stacking'. Using a forward-modelling framework we combine this with direct detections in the literature to measure the overall metal population. We apply this novel approach to the search for NeVIII absorption in a set of 26 high-quality COS spectra. We probe to an unprecedented low limit of log N$>$12.3 at 0.47$\leq z \leq$1.34 over a pathlength $\Delta$z = 7.36. This method selects apparent absorption without requiring knowledge of its source. Stacking this mixed population dilutes doublet features in composite spectra in a deterministic manner, allowing us to measure the proportion corresponding to NeVIII absorption. We stack potential NeVIII absorption in two regimes: absorption too weak to be significant in direct line studies (12.3 $$ 13.7). We do not detect NeVIII absorption in either regime. Combining our measurements with direct detections, we find that the NeVIII population is reproduced with a power law column density distribution function with slope $\beta = -1.86 \substack{+0.18 \\ -0.26}$ and normalisation log $f_{13.7} = -13.99 \substack{+0.20 \\ -0.23}$, leading to an incidence rate of strong NeVIII absorbers $dn/dz =1.38 \substack{+0.97 \\ -0.82}$. We infer a cosmic mass density for NeVIII gas with 12.3 $, Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. For the first time, we present the simultaneous detection and characterization of three distinct phases at $>10^5$ K in $z=0$ absorption, using deep $\it{Chandra}$ observations toward Mrk 421. The extraordinarily high signal-to-noise ratio ($\geqslant60$) of the spectra has allowed us to detect a $\it{hot}$ phase of the Milky Way circumgalactic medium (CGM) at 3.2$^{+1.5}_{-0.5}\times$ 10$^7$ K, coexisting with a $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase at 1.5$\pm$0.1$\times$10$^6$ K and a $\textit{warm}$ phase at 3.0$\pm$0.4$\times$10$^5$ K. The $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase is at the virial temperature of the Galaxy, and the $\textit{warm}$ phase may have cooled from the $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase, but the super-virial $\textit{hot}$ phase remains a mystery. We find that [C/O] in the $\textit{warm}$ and $\textit{warm-hot}$ phases, [Mg/O] in the $\textit{warm-hot}$ phase and [Ne/O] in the $\textit{hot}$ phase are super-solar, and the $\textit{hot}$ and the $\textit{warm-hot}$ phases are $��-$enhanced. Non-thermal line broadening is evident in the $\textit{warm-hot}$ and the $\textit{hot}$ phases and it dominates the total line broadening. Our results indicate that the $>10^5$ K CGM is a complex ecosystem. We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$\alpha$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures, uses aastex62.cls. Swift intensive accretion disk reverberation mapping of four AGN yielded light curves sampled $\sim$200-350 times in 0.3-10 keV X-ray and six UV/optical bands. Uniform reduction and cross-correlation analysis of these datasets yields three main results: 1) The X-ray/UV correlations are much weaker than those within the UV/optical, posing severe problems for the lamp-post reprocessing model in which variations in a central X-ray corona drive and power those in the surrounding accretion disk. 2) The UV/optical interband lags are generally consistent with $ \tau \propto \lambda^{4/3} $ as predicted by the centrally illuminated thin accretion disk model. While the average interband lags are somewhat larger than predicted, these results alone are not inconsistent with the thin disk model given the large systematic uncertainties involved. 3) The one exception is the U band lags, which are on average a factor of $\sim$2.2 larger than predicted from the surrounding band data and fits. This excess appears due to diffuse continuum emission from the broad-line region (BLR). The precise mixing of disk and BLR components cannot be determined from these data alone. The lags in different AGN appear to scale with mass or luminosity. We also find that there are systematic differences between the uncertainties derived by javelin vs. more standard lag measurement techniques, with javelin reporting smaller uncertainties by a factor of 2.5 on average. The Seyfert Galaxy Mrk 335 is known for its frequent changes of flux and spectral shape in the X-ray band occurred during recent years. These variations may be explained by the onset of a wind that previous, non-contemporaneous high-resolution spectroscopy in X-ray and UV bands located at accretion disc scale. A simultaneous new campaign by XMM-Newton and HST caught the source at an historical low flux in the X-ray band. The soft X-ray spectrum is dominated by prominent emission features, and by the effect of a strong ionized absorber with an outflow velocity of 5-6X10$^3$~km~s$^{-1}$. The broadband spectrum obtained by the EPIC-pn camera reveals the presence of an additional layer of absorption by gas at moderate ionization covering 80% of the central source, and tantalizing evidence for absorption in the Fe~K band outflowing at the same velocity of the soft X-ray absorber. The HST-COS spectra confirm the simultaneous presence of broad absorption troughs in CIV, Ly alpha, Ly beta and OVI, with velocities of the order of 5000 km~s$^{-1}$ and covering factors in the range of 20-30%. Comparison of the ionic column densities and of other outflow parameters in the two bands show that the X-ray and UV absorbers are likely originated by the same gas. The resulting picture from this latest multi-wavelength campaign confirms that Mrk 335 undergoes the effect of a patchy, medium-velocity outflowing gas in a wide range of ionization states that seem to be persistently obscuring the nuclear continuum., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ

A triggered 140 ks XMM-Newton observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Mrk 335 in December 2015 caught the active galaxy at its lowest X-ray flux since 2007. The NLS1 is relatively quiescent for the first ~120 ks of the observation before it flares in brightness by a factor of about five in the last 20 ks. Although only part of the flare is captured before the observation is terminated, the data reveal significant differences between the flare and quiescent phases. During the low-flux state, Mrk 335 demonstrates a reflection-dominated spectrum that results from a compact corona around a Kerr black hole. In addition to the rapid brightening, the flare is further described by spectral softening and a falling reflection fraction that are consistent with previous observations advocating at least part of the corona in Mrk 335 could be the base of an aborted jet. The spectrum during the flaring interval reveals several residuals between the 2-3 sigma level that could be attributed to absorption lines from a highly ionised plasma that is moving outward at v~0.12c. It could be that the increased luminosity during the flare enhances the radiation pressure sufficiently to launch a possible wind. If the wind is indeed responding to the change in corona luminosity then it must be located within ~80 Rg. The escape velocity at this distance is comparable to the estimated wind velocity. If confirmed, this is the first example of a radio-quiet AGN exhibiting behaviour consistent with both diffuse and collimated outflow., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Brightness variations due to dark spots on the stellar surface encode information about stellar surface rotation and magnetic activity. In this work, we analyze the Kepler long-cadence data of 26,521 main-sequence stars of spectral types M and K in order to measure their surface rotation and photometric activity level. Rotation-period estimates are obtained by the combination of a wavelet analysis and autocorrelation function of the light curves. Reliable rotation estimates are determined by comparing the results from the different rotation diagnostics and four data sets. We also measure the photometric activity proxy Sph using the amplitude of the flux variations on an appropriate timescale. We report rotation periods and photometric activity proxies for about 60 per cent of the sample, including 4,431 targets for which McQuillan et al. (2013a,2014) did not report a rotation period. For the common targets with rotation estimates in this study and in McQuillan et al. (2013a,2014), our rotation periods agree within 99 per cent. In this work, we also identify potential polluters, such as misclassified red giants and classical pulsator candidates. Within the parameter range we study, there is a mild tendency for hotter stars to have shorter rotation periods. The photometric activity proxy spans a wider range of values with increasing effective temperature. The rotation period and photometric activity proxy are also related, with Sph being larger for fast rotators. Similar to McQuillan et al. We analyzed Suzaku and Chandra observations of the soft diffuse X-ray background toward four sightlines with the goal of characterizing the X-ray emission from the Milky Way circumgalactic medium (CGM). We identified two thermal components of the CGM, one at a uniform temperature of $\rm kT = 0.176\pm0.008 ~keV$ and the other at temperatures ranging between $\rm kT = 0.65-0.90~ keV$. The uniform lower temperature component is consistent with the Galaxy's virial temperature ($ \sim10^{6}~ K$). The temperatures of the hotter components are similar to that recently discovered ($\rm \sim 10^{7}~ K$; Das et al.) in the sightline to blazar 1ES1553+113, passing close to the Fermi bubble. Alternatively, the spectra can be described by just one lower-temperature component with super-solar Neon abundance, once again similar to that found in the 1ES1553+113 sightline. The additional hot component or the overabundance of Ne is required at a significance of $>4\sigma$, but we cannot distinguish between the two possibilities. These results show that the super-virial temperature gas or an enhanced Ne abundance in the warm-hot gas in the CGM is widespread, and these are not necessarily related to the Fermi bubble., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ

The article describes the mechanical properties of biodegradable composites. The composites were made using biodegradable plastics like polylactic acid reinforced with Pinus roxburghii needles. The composites were characterized by their tensile strength, flexural strength, Rockwell hardness, thermal stability, and FTIR analysis as well as morphological and water absorption behavior. The composites possessed high tensile and flexural strength on addition of 8.77% fibers. The tensile and flexural strength increased 1.7 and 3.5 times, respectively, in comparison to virgin PLA. Biodegradation studies revealed that the composites have the capability to degrade in the natural environment. These results reveal that pine needles can be prospective candidates for use in natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites. POLYM. COMPOS., 2016. © 2016 Society of Plastics Engineers

We report on a systematic investigation of the cold and mildly ionized gaseous baryonic metal components of our Galaxy, through the analysis of high resolution Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra of two samples of Galactic and extragalactic sources. The comparison between lines of sight towards sources located in the disk of our Galaxy and extragalactic sources, allows us for the first time to clearly distinguish between gaseous metal components in the disk and halo of our Galaxy. We find that a Warm Ionized Metal Medium (WIMM) permeates a large volume above and below the Galaxy's disk, perhaps up to the Circum-Galactic space (CGM). This halo-WIMM imprints virtually the totality of the OI and OII absorption seen in the spectra of our extragalactic targets, has a temperature of T(Halo-WIMM)=2900 +/- 900 K, a density (Halo-WIMM) = 0.023 +/- 0.009 cm-3 and a metallicity Z(Halo-WIMM) = (0.4 +/- 0.1) Z_Solar. Consistently with previous works, we also confirm that the disk of the Galaxy contains at least two distinct gaseous metal components, one cold and neutral (the CNMM: Cold Neutral Metal Medium) and one warm and mildly ionized, with the same temperature of the Halo-WIMM, but higher density ((Disk-WIMM) = 0.09 +/- 0.03 cm-3) and metallicity (Z(Disk-WIMM) = 0.8 +/- 0.1$ Z_Solar). By adopting a simple disk+sphere geometry for the Galaxy, we estimates masses of the CNMM and the total (disk + halo) WIMM of M(CNMM), Comment: 20 pages, 12 Figures, 9 Tables. Accepted my MNRAS

We report a 3.4$\sigma$ detection of the warm-hot, massive, extended circumgalactic medium (CGM) around an L$^\star$ star-forming spiral galaxy NGC 3221, using deep Suzaku observations. The temperature of the gas is $10^{6.1}$ K, comparable to that of the Milky Way CGM. The spatial extent of the gas is at least $150$ kpc. For a $\beta$-model of density profile with solar abundance, the central emission measure is EM = $3\pm 1 \times 10^{-5}$ cm$^{-6}$ kpc and the central electron density is $n_{eo} = 4\pm 1 \times10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$, with a slope of $\beta = 0.56$. We investigate a range of $\beta$ values, and find that the details of the density profile do not change our results significantly. The mass of the warm-hot gas, assuming a metallicity of $\frac{1}{3}$ Z$_\odot$ is $16 \pm 3 \times 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$, being the most massive baryon component of NGC 3221. The baryon fraction is $f_b$ = 0.120 $\pm$ 0.036 (statistical) $^{+0.104}_{-0.048}$ (systematic), consistent with the cosmological mean value, closing the baryon budget of this galaxy. We also investigated the missing metals problem in conjunction with the missing baryons problem and conclude that metals are likely to be preferentially expelled from the galaxy. Mrk 590 was originally classified as a Seyfert 1 galaxy, but then it underwent dramatic changes: the nuclear luminosity dropped by over two orders of magnitude and the broad emission lines all but disappeared from the optical spectrum. Here we present followup observations to the original discovery and characterization of this "changing look" active galactic nucleus (AGN). The new Chandra and HST observations from 2014 show that Mrk 590 is awakening, changing its appearance again. While the source continues to be in a low state, its soft excess has re-emerged, though not to the previous level. The UV continuum is brighter by more than a factor of two and the broad MgII emission line is present, indicating that the ionizing continuum is also brightening. These observations suggest that the soft excess is not due to reprocessed hard X-ray emission. Instead, it is connected to the UV continuum through warm Comptonization. Variability of the Fe K-alpha emission lines suggests that the reprocessing region is within about 10 light years or 3 pc of the central source. The AGN type change is neither due to obscuration, nor due to one-way evolution from type-1 to type-2, as suggested in literature, but may be related to episodic accretion events., ApJ, in press
