We discuss client-side CORBA scripts implemented in Tcl, Perl, and Python. These are all technologies that are either currently being used on testbeds at JPL or being evaluated for future use. Finally, a Python example demonstrating implementation of a simple CORBA server is presented.

Acoustic waves propagate in thin plates as guided or Lamb modes. The velocities of these modes are dispersive in that they depend not only on the material elastic properties and density, but also on the frequency. Accurate characterization of Lamb wave dispersion is important in many acoustic based nondestructive evaluation techniques. It is necessary for ultrasonic measurements in thin plates to determine elastic properties and for flaw detection and localization. In acoustic emission (AE) testing, if not taken into account, highly dispersive Lamb mode propagation can lead to large errors in source location. In this study, the pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD) was used for measurement of group velocity dispersion of Lamb waves in a unidirectional graphite/epoxy (AS4/3502) laminate. The PWVD is one of a number of transforms which provide a time-frequency representation of a digitized time series. Broad band acoustic waves were generated by a pencil lead fracture (Hsu-Neilsen source) and were detected with broad band ultrasonic transducers. The arrival times for the lowest order symmetric (S(sub 0)) and antisymmetric (A(sub 0)) Lamb modes were determined from measurements of the time at which the respective peak amplitudes occurred in the PWVD. Measurements were made at several source-to-detector distances and a least squares fit used to calculate the velocity. Results are presented for propagation along, and perpendicular to, the fiber direction. Theoretical dispersion curves were also calculated and a comparison between theory and experiment demonstrates good agreement.

Transverse matrix cracking in cross-ply gr/ep laminates was studied with advanced acoustic emission (AE) techniques. The primary goal of this research was to measure the load required to initiate the first transverse matrix crack in cross-ply laminates of different thicknesses. Other methods had been previously used for these measurements including penetrant enhanced radiography, optical microscopy, and audible acoustic microphone measurements. The former methods required that the mechanical test be paused for measurements at load intervals. This slowed the test procedure and did not provide the required resolution in load. With acoustic microphones, acoustic signals from cracks could not be clearly differentiated from other noise sources such as grip damage, specimen slippage, or test machine noise. A second goal for this work was to use the high resolution source location accuracy of the advanced acoustic emission techniques to determine whether the crack initiation site was at the specimen edge or in the interior of the specimen.In this research, advanced AE techniques using broad band sensors, high capture rate digital waveform acquisition, and plate wave propagation based analysis were applied to cross-ply composite coupons with different numbers of 0 and 90 degree plies. Noise signals, believed to be caused by grip damage or specimen slipping, were eliminated based on their plate wave characteristics. Such signals were always located outside the sensor gage length in the gripped region of the specimen. Cracks were confirmed post-test by microscopic analysis of a polished specimen edge, backscatter ultrasonic scans, and in limited cases, by penetrant enhanced radiography. For specimens with three or more 90 degree plies together, there was an exact 1-1 correlation between AE crack signals and observed cracks. The ultrasonic scans and some destructive sectioning analysis showed that the cracks extended across the full width of the specimen. Furthermore, the locations of the cracks from the AE data were in excellent agreement with the locations measured with the microscope. The high resolution source location capability of this technique, combined with an array of sensors, was able to determine that the cracks initiated at the specimen edges, rather than in the interior. For specimens with only one or two 90 degree plies, the crack-like signals were significantly smaller in amplitude and there was not a 1-1 correlation to observed cracks. This was similar to previous results. In this case, however, ultrasonic and destructive sectioning analysis revealed that the cracks did not extend across the specimen. They initiated at the edge, but did not propagate any appreciable distance into the specimen. This explains the much smaller AE signal amplitudes and the difficulty in correlating these signals to actual cracks in this, as well as in the previous study.

Composite materials remain extremely vulnerable to out-of-plane impact loads, which may lead to severe losses in strength and stiffness. Impact induced damage is often a complex mixture of transverse cracks, delaminations and fiber failures. An experimental investigation was undertaken to quantify damage tolerance and resistance in composite materials impacted using the drop-weight method. Tests were conducted on laminates of several different carbon-fiber composite systems such as epoxies, modified epoxies, and amorphous and semicrystalline thermoplastics. In this paper, impacted composite specimens have been examined using destructive and nondestructive techniques to establish the characteristic damage states. Specifically, optical microscopy, ultrasonic and scanning electron microscopy techniques have been used to identify impact induced damage mechanisms. Damage propagation during post impact compression was also studied.

The ultrasonic quantitative NDE of graphite-epoxy composites is difficult because of the inherent inhomogeneity of the material. An examination technique must discriminate between inherent scattering centers in an undamaged region and the scattering centers due to defects or damage. Two NDE techniques that can make this distinction were used to image and quantify the extent of damage resulting from a low-energy impact. These results were then compared with those from a destructive technique. The first NDE technique, polar backscatter, employed a nonzero polar angle insonifying method to reduce specular reflection from the surface of the sample; the second NDE technique used a normal-incidence ultrasonic beam. Results from both NDE methods were subsequently correlated with those from a destructive technique, the deply method. Both the qualitative and quantitative agreement of the methods was excellent.

An investigation of the temperature dependence of the ultrasonic properties of AS4/lexan and XAS/lexan composites is summarized. In particular, a technique for determination of velocity and attenuation as a function of temperature, for both the matrix and composite materials is determined. The separation of contributions of the matrix and fiber to ultrasonic propagation and scattering is discussed. Work begun on the characterization of wave propagation in graphite fiber/polymer matrix composites is described.

The detection of bondline delaminations in multilayer structures using ultrasonic reflection techniques is a generic problem in adhesively bonded composite structures such as the Space Shuttles's Solid Rocket Motors (SRM). Standard pulse echo ultrasonic techniques do not perform well for a composite resonator composed of a resonant layer combined with attenuating layers. Excessive ringing in the resonant layer tends to mask internal echoes emanating from the attenuating layers. The SRM is made up of a resonant steel layer backed by layers of adhesive, rubber, liner and fuel, which are ultrasonically attenuating. The structure's response is modeled as a lossy ultrasonic transmission line. The model predicts that the acoustic response of the system is sensitive to delaminations at the interior bondlines in a few narrow frequency bands. These predictions are verified by measurements on a fabricated system. Successful imaging of internal delaminations is sensitive to proper selection of the interrogating frequency. Images of fabricated bondline delaminations are presented based on these studies.

An effort to provide inspection of the bondlines in the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) is discussed. Investigation of the bondlines in the membrane region of the SRM has centered on representative samples provided by Morton Thiokol. These samples have pull-tabs, or in one case grafoil inserts, to simulate delaminations at various points in the multilayer structure of steel case, liner, insulation, liner, and propellant. Discussed here is the continuing approach to examining these defects which is predicated on a model of an ultrasonic wave propagating in a lossy multilayer resonant structure, the experimental arrangements used, and the results of these experiments.

A quantitative ultrasonic technique for the nondestructive assessment of impact damage is described. The method, which involves digitizing the entire backscattered ultrasonic wave from a sample, was applied to two test panels removed from a 16-ply graphite/epoxy laminate and impacted with an aluminum ball fired at a velocity of 150 ft/sec. The results of the ultrasonic NDE were compared with the results obtained using the destructive deply technique of Freeman (1984). The NDE method provides through-the-thickness information on damage and only requires access to a single side of the material, while the deply technique gives exact information on the actual damage. Good quantitative agreement between the two techniques was obtained.

Amorphous silicon solar cells were irradiated with 1 MeV electrons at the Space Environmental Effects Laboratory of the NASA Langley Research Center. The cells accumulated a total fluence of 10 to the 14th, 10 to the 15th, and 10 to the 16th electrons per square centimeter and exhibited increasing degradation with each irradiation. This degradation was tracked by evaluating the I-V curves for AM0 illumination and the relative spectral response. The observed radiation damage was reversed following an anneal of the cells under vacuum at 200 C for 2 hours.

The research described encompasses two facets of the propagation of ultrasonic waves in composite structures: imaging of delaminations and the temperature dependence of the acoustical properties of composites. Progress in each area is summarized.

An analytical framework is presented that permits examination of the limit to the efficiency of various solar power conversion devices. Thermodynamic limits to solar power efficiency are determined for both quantum and thermal systems, and the results are applied to a variety of devices currently considered for use in space systems. The power conversion efficiency for single-threshold energy quantum systems receiving unconcentrated air mass zero solar radiation is limited to 31 percent. This limit applies to photovoltaic cells directly converting solar radiation, or indirectly, as in the case of a thermophotovoltaic system. Photoelectrochemical cells rely on an additional chemical reaction at the semiconductor-electrolyte interface, which introduces additional second-law demands and a reduction of the solar conversion efficiency. Photochemical systems exhibit even lower possible efficiencies because of their relatively narrow absorption bands. Solar-powered thermal engines in contact with an ambient reservoir at 300 K and operating at maximum power have a peak conversion efficiency of 64 percent, and this occurs for a thermal reservoir at a temperature of 2900 K. The power conversion efficiency of a solar-powered liquid metal magnetohydrodydnamic generator, a solar-powered steam turbine electric generator, and an alkali metal thermoelectric converter is discussed.

Devices that convert solar radiation directly into storable chemical or electrical energy, have characteristic energy absorption spectrum; specifically, each of these devices has energy threshold. The conversion efficiency of generalized system that emcompasses all threshold devices is analyzed, resulting in family of curves for devices of various threshold energies operating at different temperatures.

Layered crystals of the transition metal thiophosphates were synthesized and characterized for use as photoelectrodes in photoelectrochemical cells. Crystals incorporating tin and manganese show n-type response while those with iron and nickel show p-type response. These materials have a measured indirect bandgap of about 2.1 eV. They show ability to photoelectrolyze water in acid solutions with onset potentials which change in a Nernstian way as the PH of the solution changes. The onset potential is near zero volts versus a saturated calomel electrode at pH 2. At n-type crystals, oxygen could be evolved upon irradiation at underpotentials of 850 mV and at p-type crystals, hydrogen could be evolved at underpotentials of 400 mV, indicating a net gain in energy conversion. All crystals were unstable in basic solution. Liquid junction photovoltaic cells in iodide-triiodide acid solution using these layered materials were also constructed and found to have low efficiences.

These systems have in common two important but not independent features: they can produce a storable fuel, and they are sensitive only to radiant energy with a characteristic absorption spectrum. General analyses of the conversion efficiencies were made using the operational characteristics of each particular system. An efficiency analysis of a generalized system consisting of a blackbody source, a radiant energy converter having a threshold energy and operating temperature, and a reservoir is reported. This analysis is based upon the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and leads to a determination of the limiting or ultimate efficiency for an energy conversion system having a characteristic threshold.

The second law of thermodynamics imposes a strict limitation to the energy converted from direct solar radiation to useful work by a quantum device. This limitation requires that the amount of energy converted to useful work (energy in any form other than heat) can be no greater than the change in free energy of the radiation fields. Futhermore, in any real energy conversion device, not all of this available free energy in the radiation field can be converted to work because of basic limitations inherent in the device itself. A thermodynamic analysis of solar energy conversion by a completely general prototypical quantum device is presented. This device is completely described by two parameters, its operating temperature T sub R and the energy threshold of its absorption spectrum. An expression for the maximum thermodynamic efficiency of a quantum solar converter was derived in terms of these two parameters and the incident radiation spectrum. Efficiency curves for assumed solar spectral irradiance corresponding to air mass zero and air mass 1.5 are presented.

The limits are presented fo air mass 1.5 conditions. A maximum conversion efficiency of 74 percent is thermodynamically achievable for the quantum device operating at 3500 K and the heat engine in contact with a reservoir at 0 K. The efficiency drops to 56 percent for a cold reservoir at approximately room temperature conditions. Hybrid system efficiencies exceed 50 percent over receiver temperatures ranging from 1400 K to 4000 K, suggesting little benefit is gained in operating the system above 1400 K. The results are applied to a system consisting of a photovoltaic solar cell in series with a heat engine.
