Abstract

Context: In a freeze drying (FD) process, an accurate observation and control of the process parameters at critical stages are at high importance. Particularly accurate and timely identification of the critical temperature (TC) at the end of primary drying phase would lead to heating energy cost reduction and product waste elimination by ending the process before the product's micro-collapse stage. Aim: Within this work, a combination of novel techniques optical technique called Intelligent Laser Speckle Imaging (ILSI) in association with product image texture analysis, coupled to an electrical impedance technique called through vial impedance spectroscopy (TVIS) has been applied onto the real-time product states observation process to identify the specific structural product surface/subsurface characteristics and hence the micro-collapse stage. Method: 2 cycles - one providing a profile for standard approach (non-collapsed) and another with a temperature ramp through TC to micro-collapse, TVIS provides an assessment of the onset of micro-collapse through the assessment of the acceleration in drying rate whereas the ILSI with pattern recognition detects the change in microstructure

Abstract

Photons excited into ground state modes at finite temperature display partitioning among photon phases, lifetimes and distances travelled since creation. These distributions set the distance from an interface a created photon has some chance of emission. Excited photons at each frequency have a phase velocity set by each mode propagation index which determines mode density and internal energy contribution. All photons emitted after striking an interface obliquely are refracted. Their exit intensities are then irreversible except when weak internal attenuation occurs. At low temperature attenuation index is small so reversibility is approximate. As temperature rises refraction direction varies. Total emission remains reversible after transitioning through a non equilibrium state with no other heat inputs. In equilibrium the densities of excitations that create and annihilate photons are in balance with photon densities while emissivity depends on both indices and internal incident direction. Modelled exit intensities from pure water and crystalline silica contain strong resonant intensities and match data accurately. Intrinsic resonances formed within liquids and compounds are due to photon modes hybridising with localized excitations, including molecular oscillations and the anharmonic component of lattice distortions. They explain the many resonant spectral intensities seen in remote sensing. Each hybrid oscillator is a photonic virtual bound state whose energy fluctuates between levels separated by mode energy. Refraction induces solid angle changes and often anomalous refraction while thermal recycling of internally reflected photons modifies intensities and internal energy. Enhanced internal heat flux from phonon drag by photon density gradients under an external temperature gradient is also predicted., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures

34. Is There 'Life' after 'Modelling'? Student Conceptions of Mathematics

Abstract

We have been investigating university student conceptions of mathematics over a number of years, with the goal of enhancing student learning and professional development. We developed an open-ended survey of three questions, on "What is mathematics" and two questions about the role of mathematics in the students' future. This questionnaire was completed by 1,200 undergraduate students of mathematics in Australia, the UK, Canada, South Africa, and Brunei. The sample included students ranging from those majoring in mathematics to those taking only one or two modules in mathematics. Responses were analysed starting from a previously-developed phenomenographic framework that required only minor modification, leading to an outcome space of four levels of conceptions about mathematics. We found that for many students modelling is fundamental to their conception of "What is mathematics?". In a small number of students, we identified a broader conception of mathematics, that we have labelled "Life". This describes a view of mathematics as a way of thinking about reality and as an integral part of life, and represents an ideal aim for university mathematics education. 40. How High Can a Dead Cat Bounce?: Metaphor and the Hong Kong Stock Market.

Abstract

This paper investigates metaphor in the language of economics, in particular, the way the vicissitudes of the Hong Kong financial markets are reported in the press. It analyzes the content from an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) perspective, probing for the significance in the negotiation of meaning in the subject area. Text samples were collected from the local Hong Kong media over 5 months in 1994. The perception of metaphor has changed in recent years from a rather obscure area of literary style to a central psycho-linguistic process intimately concerned with the way that reality is constructed through language. A number of subject domains are identified, including anthropomorphism, gravity, fauna, sports, and sentimentality. Findings suggest that metaphor is central to the definition of basic economic constructs; it has a role in making abstruse theoretical concepts accessible to readers or merely to interest or entertain. Metaphor functions here not only as a stylistic device, but is fundamental to the perceptions of both academics and professionals in the field. (Contains 26 references.) (NAV)

41. Language Choice in an Acutely Multilingual Society: Communication and Development in Papua New Guinea.

Abstract

Acute intercultural communication problems posed by multilingualism in Papua New Guinea are discussed, and ways in which they are being addressed are examined. An introductory section outlines the language situation in Melanesia. It is noted that the area's language diversity and colonization and missionary activity have resulted in the emergence of several, mostly European, languages of wider communication. Government policy concerning official languages in Papua New Guinea, which has over 850 native languages, is described and the evolution of literacy and language policy in education in the last two decades is chronicled. Intergroup misunderstanding, suspicion, and hostility arising in part from language diversity are seen as endemic, causing problems particularly in resource development projects. Finally, a program at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology, opened in 1995 and designed to deal specifically with problems of communication in economic and social development is described. The program offers qualifications at certificate, diploma, or degree levels in a wide range of subject areas, including conflict resolution, law and administration, technology, sociology, environmental studies, critical thinking, mathematics, media studies, translation and interpretation, economics, technical and proposal writing, engineering, and map reading. Abstract

DNA sequencing continues to decrease in cost with the Illumina HiSeq2000 generating up to 600 Gb of paired-end 100 base reads in a ten-day run. Here we present a protocol for community amplicon sequencing on the HiSeq2000 and MiSeq Illumina platforms, and apply that protocol to sequence 24 microbial communities from host-associated and free-living environments. A critical question as more sequencing platforms become available is whether biological conclusions derived on one platform are consistent with what would be derived on a different platform. We show that the protocol developed for these instruments successfully recaptures known biological results, and additionally that biological conclusions are consistent across sequencing platforms (the HiSeq2000 versus the MiSeq) and across the sequenced regions of amplicons.

43. Staying the Course.

Abstract

In a yearlong project, Britain's Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) investigated why some students leave their educational programs before achieving their certificates or diplomas. The project drew information on completion rates from the BTEC database. Views of BTEC centers' staff were canvassed through a national survey covering 348 programs in business and finance, computing, and engineering. Center staff and BTEC's lead moderators shared views on good practice and the development work going on in their centers to improve completion rates. Field work visits involved interviewing program teams and 60 students and studying programs. A postal survey obtained insights from noncompleting students on their reasons for leaving their programs. Analysis revealed the following: personal attention was the basic principle behind good retention rates; most BTEC students left a program with some recorded achievement; getting a job was one of the main reasons for full-time students leaving programs; loss or change of employment and other work-related reasons were among the main reasons why part-time students left early; and most students who left early did so for program-related reasons, such as poor grades or poor achievement. Examples of good practice in centers include the following: improving personal attention, student support and personal tutoring; supporting large numbers of students; providing links with employers; dealing with anxiety; providing preenrollment attention; and using open and flexible learning techniques.
