As regional chronologies become better defined, we are better able to track large-scale population movements and related cultural change. A dataset of 156 radiocarbon dates from the Middle Cumberland Region (MCR), evaluated with 199 more dates from the Ridge and Valley portions of northern Georgia and East Tennessee, enable modeling of population movements from the Central Mississippi Valley into the MCR, as well as subsequent movements and effects in the Ridge and Valley between AD 1200 and 1450. The dissolution of Cahokia is of particular interest, because the MCR falls geographically between the American Bottom and the Ridge and Valley province. This large-scale chronological perspective places key events in this part of the Southeast and Midwest into a unified historical framework that increases our understanding of the timing of cultural events. A related goal is to sort out possible external events and influences that may have affected this large region. We conducted a secondary analysis of the evaluations of 22 sites participating in four primary care redesign initiatives funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services or the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Our objectives were to determine the overall impact of the initiatives on Medicare expenditures and whether specific site-level program features influenced expenditure findings. Averaged over sites, the mean intervention effect was a statistically insignificant US$26 per beneficiary per year. Policy implications from meta-regression results suggest that funders should consider supporting technical assistance efforts and pay for performance incentives to increase savings. There was no evidence that paying for medical home transformation produced savings in total cost of care. We estimate that in future evaluations, data from 35 sites would be needed to detect feature effects of US$300 per beneficiary per year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Systematic reviews of observational studies can be affected by biases that lead to under- or over-estimates of true intervention effects. Several tools have been reported in the literature that attempt to characterize potential bias. Our objective in this study was to determine the extent to which study-specific bias may have influenced intervention impacts on total costs of care (TCOC) in round 1 of the Health Care Innovation Awards. Methods: We reviewed 82 statistical evaluations of innovation impacts on Medicare TCOC. We developed five risk-of-bias measures and assessed their influence on TCOC impacts using meta-regression. Results: The majority of evaluations used propensity score matching to create their comparison groups. One third of the non-randomized interventions were judged to have some risk of biased effects due largely to the way they recruited their treatment groups, and 35% had some degree of covariate imbalance remaining after propensity score adjustments. However, in the multivariable analysis of TCOC effects, none of the bias threats we examined (comparison group construction method, risk of bias, or degree of covariate imbalance) had a major impact on the magnitude of HCIA1 innovation effects. Evaluations using propensity score weighting produced larger but imprecise savings effects compared to propensity score matching. Discussion: Our results suggest that it is unlikely that HCIA1 TCOC effect sizes were systematically affected by the types of bias we considered. Assessing the risk of bias based on specific study design features is likely to be more useful for identifying problematic characteristics than the subjective quality ratings used by existing risk tools. This report offers updated information from crystalline artifact research results initially presented in 2014 by Michael C. Moore and colleagues. At that time, worked and raw crystal items from four Mississippian sites in the Middle Cumberland Region of Tennessee were assessed by the Tennessee Geological Survey as calcite through visual techniques. Subsequent analysis using Fiber Optic Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS) has determined these specimens are, in fact, fluorite. The known sample of six worked crystal artifacts in 2014 has also increased by 50% through the recent discovery of two earplugs and one bead from three Mississippian period sites. The increasing demand for fertility treatments has led to the rise of private clinics offering complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments. The most frequently offered CAM infertility treatment is acupuncture. However, there is no good evidence to support the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating infertility. This study evaluates the scope of information provided by CAM fertility clinics in the UK. A content analysis was conducted on 200 websites of CAM fertility clinics in the UK that offer acupuncture as a treatment for infertility. Of the 48 clinics that met the eligibility criteria, the majority of the websites did not provide sufficient information on the efficacy, risks and success rates of acupuncture for infertility. This has the potential to infringe on patient autonomy, provide false hope and reduce the chances of pregnancy ever being achieved as fertility declines during the time course of ineffective acupuncture treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic has mandated a re-imagination of how healthcare is administered and delivered, with a view towards focusing on person-centred care and advancing population health while increasing capacity, access and equity in the healthcare system. These goals can be achieved through healthcare integration. In 2019, the University Health Network (UHN), a consortium of four quaternary care hospitals in Ontario, Canada, established the first stage of a pilot program to increase healthcare integration at the institutional level and vertically with other primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the Ontario healthcare system. Implementation of the program was accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic and demonstrated how healthcare integration improves person-centred care and population health; therefore serving as the foundation for a health system response for the COVID-19 pandemic recovery and beyond. From building towers to picking an orange from a stack of fruit, assessing support is critical for successfully interacting with the physical world. But how do people determine whether one object supports another? In this paper, we develop a counterfactual simulation model (CSM) of causal judgments about physical support. The CSM predicts that people judge physical support by mentally simulating what would happen to a scene if the object of interest was removed. Three experiments test the model by asking one group of participants to judge what would happen to a tower if one of the blocks were removed, and another group of participants how responsible that block was for the tower's stability. The CSM accurately captures participants' predictions by running noisy simulations that incorporate different sources of uncertainty. Participants' responsibility judgments are closely related to counterfactual predictions: a block is more responsible when many other blocks would fall if it were removed. By construing physical support as preventing from falling, the CSM provides a unified account of how causal judgments in dynamic and static physical scenes arise from the process of counterfactual simulation. Peer victimization and dating violence victimization frequently co-occur, with 50.4% of adolescents reporting victimization in both social contexts. A possible explanation for the association between these two negative experiences is offered by interpersonal theories of depression. These theories stipulate that depression might not only be caused by relational stressors but may actually also be causing stressful experiences. The current study aimed to test if individuals with inherent dispositions to depression-related cognitions and behaviors are more at risk of experiencing relational difficulties, such as peer victimization and dating violence victimization. This study used a genetically informed design with 806 twins (51.5% girls) to test 1) if at least part of the association between peer victimization in school and dating violence victimization in emerging adulthood can be explained by common underlying heritable factors. Participants provided repeated assessments of their peer victimization in school at ages 13 through 17, their depression symptoms at ages 13 through 19, as well as their victimization in dating relationships at age 19. A Cholesky decomposition based on structural equation modeling supported the hypotheses. Specifically, the association between peer victimization and dating violence victimization was to a significant extent explained by common underlying genetic vulnerabilities that were associated with depression symptoms. No sex moderation was found. The findings highlight the importance of addressing early indicators of vulnerability toward depression symptoms to prevent victimization by peers or dating partners. Simple Summary: Many boron-containing compounds have been synthesized and proposed as boron-delivery agents for boron neutron capture therapy for cancers, including brain tumors and melanomas. However, only a few have been investigated in clinical studies, leaving their potential efficacy for cancer treatment unknown. With the recent availability of accelerator-based neutron sources, clinical trials are underway using the boronated amino acid (L)-4-hydroxyboryl phenylalanine. Simultaneously, there is renewed interest in the development of multi-functional boron-delivery agents for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Promising agents can deliver therapeutic amounts of boron into tumor cells with high specificity and low toxicity. Among the different classes of boron-containing compounds, peptide-, porphyrin-, liposome-, and nanoparticle-based-delivery agents are the most promising due to their tumor-targeting and concurrent imaging abilities. A systematic and comparative evaluation of these agents in clinical trials would allow the determination of their full potential for cancer treatment. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a binary cancer treatment that involves the irradiation of 10B-containing tumors with low-energy neutrons (thermal or epithermal). The alpha particles and recoiling Li nuclei that are produced in the 10B-capture nuclear reaction are high-linear-energy transfer particles that destroy boron-loaded tumor cells; therefore, BNCT has the potential to be a localized therapeutic modality. Two boron-delivery agents have been used in clinical trials of BNCT in patients with malignant brain tumors, cutaneous melanoma, or recurrent tumors of the head and neck region, demonstrating the potential of BNCT in the treatment of difficult cancers. A variety of potentially highly effective boron-delivery agents have been synthesized in the past four decades and tested in cells and animal models. These include boron-containing nucleosides, peptides, proteins, polyamines, porphyrins, liposomes, monoclonal antibodies, and nanoparticles of various types. The most promising agents are multi-functional boronated molecules and nanoparticles functionalized with tumor cell-targeting moieties that increase their tumor selectivity and contain a radiolabel or fluorophore to allow quantification of 10B-biodistribution and treatment planning. This review discusses multi-functional boron agents reported in the last decade, but their full potential can only be ascertained after their evaluation in BNCT clinical trials. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have been described as a mechanism to allow more undergraduates to engage in research experiences. To understand whether CUREs are viable to scale-up undergraduate access to research experiences, it is essential to carefully evaluate whether CUREs promote comparable self-reported outcomes for students and are less resource intensive than undergraduate research internships. In comparing student outcomes from four distinct CUREs to outcomes from students engaged in a summer research programme in the biology department at one institution, we found that students in both experiences self-report comparable gains on all items studied using the Undergraduate Research Student Self-Assessment tool. CURE students report similar levels of satisfaction with aspects of research experiences, such as amount of time spent conducting research and working with a mentor, compared with students engaged in the summer research programme. The CUREs studied here are less resource intensive than the summer research programme, and still led to comparable self-reported outcomes. These courses increased the number of biology undergraduates able to engage in research experiences, suggesting that CUREs are a viable option to expand access to research experiences that promote expected learning outcomes in a more efficient way. This paper discusses the value added by using a single vector sensor over a conventional pressure-only hydrophone for geoacoustic inversions. Inversion methods based on genetic algorithms are used to estimate the seabed properties. Synthetic signals of impulsive arrivals first are modeled using KRAKEN and RAM propagation models, each being modified to predict components of the vector field. While KRAKEN is utilized to directly compute dispersion curves, RAM provides full-field results that require the application of time warping to separate the modal arrivals. Combinations of dispersion curves utilizing all vector sensor channels are compared to curves estimated with the pressure-only channel. Within the time warping analysis, both binary masking and band-pass filter masking methods are applied to compare stability of results. The environment modeled for the synthetic analysis and inversion method utilize sound speed profiles measured during the Monterey Bay 2019 at-sea experiment and assume a sediment layer of constant thickness overlying a deeper sub-bottom type. White noise is added to the synthetic data at different signal-to-noise ratios to evaluate the impact of signal excess on the results. A hybrid optimization approach is used to improve the results of the genetic algorithm method. The analysis with synthetic data is consistent with the analysis of broadband, impulsive data collected from the experiment, indicating that the additional information from the vertical velocity channel further improves the geoacoustic parameter estimates. Details of the structural elucidation of the clinically useful photodynamic therapy sensitizer NPe6 (15) are presented. NPe6, also designated as Laserphyrin, Talaporfin, and LS-11, is a second-generation photosensitizer derived from chlorophyll-a, currently used in Japan for the treatment of human lung, esophageal, and brain cancers. After the initial misidentification of the structure of this chlorin-e6 aspartic acid conjugate as (13), NMR and other synthetic procedures described herein arrived at the correct structure (15), confirmed using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Interesting new features of chlorin-e6 chemistry (including the intramolecular formation of an anhydride (24)) are reported, allowing chemists to regioselectively conjugate amino acids to each available carboxylic acid on positions 131 (formic), 152 (acetic), and 173 (propionic) of chlorin e6 (14). Cellular investigations of several amino acid conjugates of chlorin-e6 revealed that the 131-aspartylchlorin-e6 derivative is more phototoxic than its 152- and 173-regioisomers, in part due to its nearly linear molecular conformation. Background: Sarcopenia is an increasingly recognized marker of frailty in cardiac patients. Patients with a history of congenital heart disease and Fontan procedure have a higher risk of developing progressive muscle wasting. Our objective was to determine if we could use routine cardiac MRI (CMR) for the surveillance of muscle wasting. Methods: A retrospective study of all Fontan patients (n = 75) was conducted at our institution, with CMR performed from 2010 to 2022 and exercise stress testing performed within 12 months (4.3 ± 4.2 months). The skeletal muscle area (SMA) for the posterior paraspinal and anterior thoracic muscles were traced and indexed for body surface area (BSA). Patients were stratified by percentile into the upper and lower quartiles, and the two groups were compared. Multivariable regression was performed to control for sex and age. Results: There was a significant positive association of both anterior (r = 0.34, p = 0.039) and paraspinal (r = 0.43, p = 0.007) SMA to peak VO2. Similarly, paraspinal but not anterior SMA was negatively associated with the VE/VCO2 (r = –0.45, p = 0.006). The upper quartile group had significantly more males (18/19 vs. 8/20; p = 0.0003) and demonstrated a significantly higher peak VO2 (32.2 ± 8.5 vs. 23.8 ± 4.7, p = 0.009), a higher peak RER (1.2 ± 0.1 vs. 1.1 ± 0.04, p = 0.007), and a significantly lower VE/VCO2 (32.9 ± 3.6 vs. 40.2 ± 6.2, p = 0.006) compared to the lowest quartile. The association of SMA to VO2 peak and VE/VCO2 was redemonstrated after controlling for sex and age. Conclusion: Thoracic skeletal muscle area may be an effective surrogate of muscle mass and is correlated to several measures of cardiorespiratory fitness post-Fontan. Objective: To examine the relationships between loneliness and psychosocial supports, emerging adult service utilization, and barriers to utilization. Participants: 18 to 29-year-old students enrolled in a large Midwestern University (n = 292). Methods: Online surveys were administered to all participants involving information on loneliness, social supports, basic need satisfactions, community/university service utilization, and barriers to service use. Logistic and linear regressions, analysis of variance were conducted. Results: Emerging adults were found to have a greater likelihood of service utilization when higher in social support from friends and less likely to utilize services when high in relatedness and competence need satisfaction, specifically in regard to community services. Group differences in greater barriers to service utilization were found among the highest levels of loneliness and the lowest levels of need satisfaction. Conclusion: Overall, this study indicates psychosocial supports and loneliness are related to service utilization in a nuanced manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Throughout the Confessions, Augustine repeatedly complains about heresy with a special focus on the heresy he once belonged to, Manicheanism. To those of us who live in a culture in which respectable people rarely, if ever, care about religious orthodoxy to such a degree, these complaints seem rather bizarre. Despite this initial appearance, Augustine presents in the Confessions several plausible reasons for thinking heresy is sinful and, therefore, detrimental to a person's sanctity and ultimate salvation. In this paper, I argue that Augustine considers heresy sinful because it involves as many as three kinds of idolatry: loving a lie/false conception of God instead of the true God, loving one's own beliefs more than the Truth, which is God, and loving the worldly praise one receives from developing novel opinions more than God. CAT posits that competition for power revolves around oppositional worldviews reflecting preferences attached to the two primary objectives of all successful societies: amassing and distributing resources. CAT not only seems to set aside value issues entirely, it is not at all clear what light it sheds on political conflict characterized by worldviews that clash in terms values I and i resources. Baumeister and Bushman (this issue) offer a cultural animal theory of partisan hostility (hereafter CAT) with the specific aim of explaining the root drivers of political conflict. The bottom line is that economic theories of politics, much like CAT, consistently point toward political conflict revolving around an axis of oppositional worldviews that reflect self-interested resource preferences. There have been numerous calls for improved pedagogical practices in biological education, and there is a clear need for such improvements in ecology and related curricula. Most ecology‐related texts lack pedagogy and are designed to be content‐rich. National initiatives, such as Vision & Change, provide guidance on undergraduate biology education, including increasing use of evidence‐based active learning, and taking a more conceptual and science practice skills approach. Biology education research is rich with evidence‐based teaching practices, which reveal that active learning approaches implemented in thoughtful ways lead to strong learning gains relative to lecture‐based course delivery. CREATE (Consider, Read, Elucidate the hypothesis, Analyze and interpret data, Think of the next Experiment) integrates evidence‐based active pedagogical practices into one approach to STEM education that focuses heavily on the process of science and science practice skills rather than content delivery by replacing the textbook with selected journal articles. The approach focuses on deep reading and analysis of primary literature; immersing students in the literature is an advantage of the pedagogy. CREATE was developed and tested in other biological disciplines (genetics and molecular biology) that have long been at the forefront of pedagogical best practices in biology. We transformed two upper‐level undergraduate ecological courses (Conservation Biology, and Biodiversity and Ecology) into CREATE courses. We provide examples of assignments, student work, and assessments of the approach, illustrating the various ways CREATE can be successfully implemented. The approach can be adopted in part, to ease into it and test it out, or in whole. We recommend that ecology teachers consider making their courses more active, if they have not already done so; adopting pedagogical practices embedded within CREATE can be a way to achieve active learning. The CREATE approach and other evidence‐based pedagogical best practices lead to strong learning gains and more inclusive learning environments. This article examines Korean surrealism—the avant‐garde movement most explicitly preoccupied with questions of the psyche and subjectification within an historical context of colonial unfreedom—through attention to the short‐lived journal Samsa munhak 三四文學 (34 Literature, 1934–37) and its most representative poet, Yi Si‐u 李時雨. Drawing from psychoanalysis and affect theory, it addresses Yi Si‐u's scholarly underexamined but substantive meditations on the constitution of the subject, desire, and repression, focusing specifically on the question of (un)happiness and its implications for psychic and political freedom in a colonial climate of despair only partially brightened by the allure of the commodity. The author aims to demonstrate how Yi's surrealist refraction of subjective desire both registers the sociopolitical pressures of his historical context as well as negatively conceptualizes a liberated form of happiness at odds with the standardized variant administered by the hegemonic colonial authority. As such, the dialectical inseparability of collective liberation from psychosocial repression and the individual pursuit of happiness can become legible, an insight that may contribute to current theorizations of affect, commodification, and emancipatory movements. Electrocatalytic hydrodeoxygenation of lignin model compounds (cerulignol, creosol, guaiacol, phenol and their mixture) has been performed under mild conditions (1 atm, 25–60 °C) using a stirred slurry cathode catalytic reactor and a three-component electrolyte system: methanesulfonic acid – isopropanol – inorganic salt (KCl or NaCl). Fully saturated and deoxygenated products, such as propylcyclohexane, were obtained with high selectivity (up to 40%) and conversion (up to 90%) after 4 h of reaction time. A dual catalytic function for hydrogenation and dehydration is provided by the dispersed metal catalyst (Pt/C) and acidic protons from the electrolyte, respectively. The addition of isopropanol to the electrolyte is crucial for substrate solubilization and favoring the complete hydrodeoxygenation reaction pathways. Furthermore, the presence of salt (e.g., KCl or NaCl) in the electrolyte improved the conversion, faradaic efficiency, and carbon balance, due possibly to stabilization of protonated reactive intermediates. This study demonstrates that production of complete hydrodeoxygenation species (i.e., cyclic hydrocarbons) from diverse lignin related phenolics can be achieved via electrocatalysis at significantly lower temperatures and pressures than those in traditional thermal catalysis, in the absence of external hydrogen gas and without catalyst coking. This paper reflects on ideas of tacit knowledge in order to examine the nature of planners' expertise. It investigates the shifting knowledge and power dynamics between and within the public and private sectors, as a means of determining how tacit expertise is transferred and re‐appropriated in new domains and geographies of practice. Tacit understanding of what facilitates successful permissions and what impedes the approval process helps planners navigate the plan‐led system and avoid inertia. Findings are two‐fold. First, public sector planners transfer their own expert tacit knowledge to influence and direct local development planning. Second, the findings illustrate that public sector planners feel their tacit expertise is increasingly undervalued and traditional networks of knowledge transference have been dismantled due to the erosion of networks of peer support. This results in a disruptive counter narrative based in private planning practice where public sector experts are re‐emerging in commercial practice due to a range of factors, including: budgets cuts; demoralisation; and seeking greater job security in the private sector. This leads to new geographies of tacit knowledge, as local government planners transfer their knowledge into new professional environments. This can result in reconfigurations of locally embedded knowledge as expertise is repurposed and used to bolster the likelihood of development applications succeeding, often for profit motives rather than the broader public good. Furthermore, it can also lead to local knowledge being uprooted and spatially diffused across wider geographies as private sector planners frequently work across broader domains of practice than public sector counterparts. Heart transplantation is the gold standard of care for end-stage heart failure in the United States. Donor hearts are a scarce resource, however the current allocation policy—proposed in 2016 and implemented in 2018—has not addressed certain disparities. Between 2005 and 2016, the number of active candidates increased 127%, whereas transplant rates decreased 27.8%. Pretransplant mortality rates declined steadily for that period from 14.6 to 9.7, especially for candidates with mechanical circulatory assistive devices (MCSDs). This study reports survival analyses of candidates for heart transplantation list under competing events of transplantation and MCSD implantation. We queried the transplant data for a cohort of adult patients (age ≥ 16) without MCSDs prior to listing for transplantation between 2005 and 2014 (n = 23,373). We used cause-specific and subdistribution hazards models as multivariate regressions for all competing events. Patients listed as low priority for transplantation are less likely to require implantation but less likely to survive after 1,000 days of listing than patients listed at higher priorities. The current policy does not address this disparity as it focuses on stratifying patients with different types of MCSD. Clinical characteristics must be considered in prioritization. Peer victimization and dating violence are highly prevalent among adolescents. Those two forms of victimization are notably associated with heightened levels of internalizing problems. The stress generation hypothesis stipulates that depressive cognitions and behaviors may generate interpersonal stressors for depressed individuals. It has thus been hypothesized that victims of peer victimization may experience higher levels of internalizing problems, which in turn, may render them more at risk of experiencing dating violence victimization. We used a longitudinal design with three waves from the Quebec Youth's Romantic Relationships Survey (n = 4,923). Participants (59.6% girls, aged between 14 and 18 years old) reported their experiences of dating violence victimization, peer victimization and psychological distress. A cross-lagged panel analysis was performed to test the mediational effect of psychological distress between peer victimization and dating violence while controlling for age and gender. The interaction effect of gender in the model was also tested. The longitudinal relationship between peer victimization and dating violence victimization was significantly mediated by internalizing problems. This result thus supports the stress generation hypothesis. No interaction effect of gender was observed in the model, thus suggesting that this relationship does not change as a function of gender. This study offers to practitioners in the area of prevention and intervention for peer victimization and dating violence a different way of tackling the problem of revictimization. Indeed, our findings revealed that internalizing problems were longitudinally associated with subsequent relational problems, when occurring after being victimized. Cocoa butter equivalents (CBEs) are formulated by mixing palm mid fraction (PMF) with silica‐treated hard stearin fractions produced via enzymatic acidolysis of high oleic sunflower oil with various mixtures of stearic and palmitic acids. The CBE blends always contain ≈30% 1,3‐distearoyl‐2‐oleoyl‐sn‐glycerol, but vary in 1,3‐dipalmitoyl‐2‐oleoyl‐sn‐glycerol (POP; 40–45%) and rac‐1‐palmitoyl‐2‐oleoyl‐3‐stearoyl glycerol (POSt; 10‐16%) content. Overall symmetric disaturated monounsaturated (Sat‐O‐Sat) levels range from 81–86%. The effects of varying POP/POSt content on the non‐isothermal and isothermal crystallization (at 20 °C) of the CBEs are then studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), stop and return DSC, and X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and compared with CB. Four polymorphs (I/sub‐α, II/α, IV/β′, and V/β) are identified which appear at different stages. The addition of PMF (raising POP levels) slows crystallization rates compared to the original stearins, but higher levels of POP also produce a small amount of V/β in under 4 h at 20 °C via apparent transformation from II/α. This does not occur with (high POSt) CB samples. However, after storage at 20 °C for 7 days, CB demonstrates greater transformation to V/β (from IV/β′) as confirmed via XRD. Solid fat contents of CBE blends are higher than CB due to higher Sat‐O‐Sat levels. Practical applications: The paper demonstrates a new route for formulating CBEs. The relative proportions of StOSt, POSt and POP in the formulation can be controlled by changing the proportions of palmitic and stearic acid used in the enzymatic acidolysis and the blend ratio with the PMF. An inversion scheme based on time-warping is presented for estimating the attenuation coefficient of a sediment bottom using a single vector sensor, restricted to shallow water and using low-frequency impulsive sources. The attenuation information is extracted from the modal phase difference between pressure and vertical velocity. The method is derived from Pekeris waveguide theoretical equations and the eigen values are obtained using the normal mode model Kraken. Some changes are made to the time-warping process to mitigate the inherent interference between adjacent modes, which improves the phase extraction capabilities. Results are presented for a two-layer, homogeneous environment using the RAM propagation model for depth-dependent sound speed profile simulations. Aims: Preclinical studies of MR309, a selective sigma‐1 receptor (σ1R) antagonist, support a potential role in treating neuropathic pain. We report 2 studies that provide insight into the pharmacokinetics (PK) and brain σ1R binding of MR309. Methods: Steady‐state PK of MR309 (400 mg once daily and 200 mg twice‐daily [BID] for 10 days; EudraCT 2015–001818‐99 [PK study]) and the relationship between MR309 plasma exposure and brain σ1R occupancy (EudraCT 2017–000670‐11 [positron emission tomography study]) were investigated in healthy volunteers. Positron emission tomography using the σ1R ligand [11C]SA4503 was conducted at baseline, and 2 and 8 hours after a single dose of MR309 (200–800 mg). The relationship between brain σ1R occupancy and MR309 exposure was explored using data‐driven model fitting. Results: MR309 was well tolerated, brain σ1R occupancy ranged between 30.5 and 74.9% following single‐dose MR309 (n = 7). MR309 BID provided a plasma PK profile with less fluctuation than once daily dosing (n = 16). MR309 200 mg BID yielded average steady state plasma concentrations between 2000 and 4000 ng/mL in the PK study, which corresponded to an estimated brain σ1R occupancy of 59–74%. Conclusion: MR309 200 mg BID dose was below the 75% σ1R occupancy threshold expected to elicit maximal antinociceptive effect as observed in neuropathic pain models. Further investigations of MR309 for neuropathic pain will require higher brain σ1R occupancy, and establish the optimal dose by elucidating the clinical impact of a broad range of brain σ1R occupancy across different neuropathic pain indications. From February 2019 through January 2021, data were collected by an acoustic vector sensor moored on the seafloor at a depth of approximately 900 m just outside of Monterey Bay, California, near a major shipping lane off the California coast. Analysis of the vector sensor data has shown the ability to accurately determine bearings to merchant vessels at ranges up to 60 km. This paper examines the features of the low-frequency soundscape using spectral probability densities and evaluates directional features through vector intensity processing as well as coherent linear and adaptive processing of the vector sensor channels. Merchant vessel acoustic data were analyzed using the 1/3 octave band centered at 63 Hz. Over the period analyzed, a reduction in merchant vessel noise was observed between February and June 2020 relative to the same period in 2019, consistent with a reduction in vessel traffic due to the worldwide response to COVID-19. The directional features of the data evaluated through adaptive processing methods also suggest this reduction can be most clearly distinguished towards the south, where the shipping lane is limited to transiting vessels, rather to the north-northwest, where merchant vessels tend to congregate on approach into the San Francisco Bay area. All plant breeding programs are dependent on plant phenotypic and genotypic data, but the development of phenotyping technology has been slow relative to that of genotyping. Crown rust (Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae Erikss.) is the most important disease of cultivated oat (Avena sativa L.), making the development of disease-resistant oat cultivars an important breeding objective. Visual observation is the most common scoring method, but it can be laborious and subjective. We visually scored a diverse collection of 256 oat lines at a total of 27 time points in three disease nursery environments. Multispectral aerial photos were collected using an unmanned aerial vehicle at the same time points as the visual observations. The photos were analyzed, and subsets of the spectral properties of each plot were measured. Random forest modeling was used to model the relationship between the spectral properties of the plots and visually observed disease severity. The ability of the photo data and the random forest model to estimate visually observed disease severity was evaluated using three different cross-validation analyses. We specifically addressed the issue of assessing phenotyping accuracy across and within time points. The accuracy of the photo estimates was greatest for adult plants shortly before they began to senesce. Accuracy outside of that time frame was generally low but statistically significant. Unmanned aerial vehicle–mounted sensors could increase disease scoring efficiency, but additional investigation into the spectral signature of disease severity at all plant growth stages may be necessary to automate accurate full-season measurements. Objectives: To quantify the effect of politics on the physical, psychological, and social health of American adults during the four-year span of the Trump administration. Methods: A previously validated politics and health scale was used to compare health markers in nationally representative surveys administered to separate samples in March 2017 (N = 800) and October 2020 (N = 700). Participants in the 2020 survey were re-sampled approximately two weeks after the 2020 election and health markers were compared to their pre-election baselines. Results: Large numbers of Americans reported politics takes a significant toll on a range of health markers—everything from stress, loss of sleep, or suicidal thoughts to an inability to stop thinking about politics and making intemperate social media posts. The proportion of Americans reporting these effects stayed stable or slightly increased between the spring of 2017 and the fall of 2020 prior to the presidential election. Deterioration in measures of physical health became detectably worse in the wake of the 2020 election. Those who were young, politically interested, politically engaged, or on the political left were more likely to report negative effects. Conclusions: Politics is a pervasive and largely unavoidable source of chronic stress that exacted significant health costs for large numbers of American adults between 2017 and 2020. Obsolescence and vacancy are part of the traditional building life cycle, as tenants leave properties and move to new ones. Flux, a period of uncertainty before the establishment of new direction, can be considered part of building DNA. What is new, due to structural disruptions in the way we work, is the rate and regularity of flux, reflected in obsolescence, vacancy, and impermanent use. Covid-19 has instantly accelerated this disruption. Retail failure has increased with even more consumers moving online. While employees have been working from home, rendering the traditional office building in the central business district, at least temporarily, obsolete. This article reflects on the situation by reporting findings from an 18-month research project into the practice of planning adaptation in the English built environment. Original findings based on interviews with a national sample of local authority planners, combined with an institutional analysis of planning practice since the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act, suggest that the discipline of planning in England is struggling with the reality of flux. There is a demand for planning to act faster, due to the speed of change in the built environment, and liberal political concerns with planning regulation. This is reflected in relaxations to permitted development rules and building use categories. However, participants also indicate that there is a concurrent need for the planning system to operate in a more measured way, to plan the nuanced complexity of a built environment no longer striated by singular use categories at the local level. This notion of flux suggests a process of perpetual change, turbulence, and volatility. However, our findings suggest that within this process, there is a temporal dialectic between an accelerating rate of change in the built environment and a concomitant need to plan in a careful way to accommodate adaptation. We situate these findings in a novel reading of the complex adaptive systems literature, arguing that planning practice needs to embrace uncertainty, rather than eradicate it, in order to enable built environment adaptation. These findings are significant because they offer a framework for understanding how successful building adaptation can be enabled in England, moving beyond the negativity associated with the adaptation of buildings in recent years. This is achieved by recognizing the complex interactions involved in the adaptation process between respective stakeholders and offering an insight into how respective scales of planning governance can coexist successfully. In his critique of the therapeutic, Taylor argues that therapy fails to engage with the ethical and spiritual significance of human suffering. Therapy's denial of ethics is representative of a wider modern difficulty with accommodating Taylor's view of ethical discourse as the articulation of the qualitative distinctions of worth implicit in our strong evaluations. In the case of therapy, this rejection of ethics stems from the claim to offer a set of scientifically based techniques of psychological change, and from protections for patient autonomy that are derived from a negative conception of liberty. Taylor's critique of negative liberty demonstrates the inevitability of strong evaluation and serves to highlight how therapy covertly offers ethical proposals while denying that it is doing so. A psychoanalytic case vignette illustrates how it would be possible to give an ethical frame to therapeutic aims. To locate standard conceptions of psychological health in the context of Taylor's history of the modern identity would emphasize their ethical significance and open the possibility to move therapy beyond the therapeutic. Puberty is a period of rapid cortical and neuronal development. Stress exposure during puberty programs the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responsiveness to future stressors. However, programming can result in an enduring maladaptation of the HPA axis activity and can be associated with long-term anxiety- and depression-like behaviours. Probiotic treatment mitigates the effect of stress on mental health, suggesting that the gut microbiome may mediate the programming of the HPA axis. However, the mechanism underlying this effect remains elusive. Thus, we investigated the effect of probiotic exposure on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced programming of the HPA axis and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression in the paraventricular (PVN), basolateral amygdala (BLA), piriform cortex (PIR), and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Male and female mice were exposed to either probiotics or control skim milk and were treated with either saline or LPS during puberty. Prior to euthanasia in adulthood, mice were restrained for 30 min. The results showed that pubertal LPS treatment permanently decreased GR expression in the PVN in milk fed control males. However, pubertal probiotic treatment blocked the LPS-induced decrease in GR expression in males. Given that this effect is limited to males, further research is required to better understand sex differences in the interactions between the gut microbiome and the programming of the HPA axis during puberty. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that the gut microbiome influences the neurophysiology of the HPA axis and mediates its programming in pubertal males. This study identifies social services directors' perceptions of major barriers to psychosocial care and examines the structural factors associated with these barriers. Data were merged from the 2019 National Nursing Home Social Services Directors Survey and CMS's Nursing Home Compare. A hierarchical linear regression predicts overall barriers. Nine binary logistic regressions predict specific barriers. Common major barriers include "insufficient number of nurse aide staff" (31%), and "having to do things other people could do" (30%). Overall barriers to psychosocial care decreased as directors' years of experience increased, the number of staff members in social services increased, and less time was spent on short-stay residents. Departments with one staff member (compared to 3+) have a 300% greater likelihood of perceiving a major barrier in social services staffing, pressured discharge of short-stay residents, and residents' socioemotional needs are treated as less important than medical/nursing needs. Directors had a 59%-239% greater likelihood of perceiving a major barrier across six of the nine barriers when 50% or more of social services staffing is devoted to short-stay residents. This study describes social services directors' involvement in dementia care in U.S. nursing homes, focusing on interest in and needs for dementia care training. Respondents were 924 social service directors from U.S. nursing homes. We found that 87% of social service departments engaged in cognitive assessment; 59% of social services directors were strongly interested in dementia care training, and 23% would need up to 10 hours of preparation time or would not be able to train staff on dementia-related care. Multinomial logistic regression analysis (n = 836) revealed that, in comparison to having no interest in dementia training, age, years of experience in nursing homes, outside mental health contracting, barriers to staffing, and hours needed to prepare dementia training predicted varying interest in dementia care training. Nursing home (NH) residents have high psychosocial needs related to illness, disability, and changing life circumstances. The staff member with the most expertise in addressing psychosocial needs is the social worker. However, federal regulations indicate that only NHs with 120+ beds need hire a social services staff member and that a "qualified social worker" need not have a social work degree. Therefore, two-thirds of NHs are not required to employ a social services staff member and none are required to hire a degreed social worker. This is in stark contrast to NASW professional standards. Reporting findings from this nationally representative sample of 924 social services directors, we describe the NH social services workforce and document that most NHs do hire social services staff, although 42% of social services directors are not social work educated. 37% of NHs have a degreed and licensed social worker at the helm of social services. The odds of hiring a degreed and licensed social workers are higher for larger NHs, especially if not-for-profit and not part of a chain. People can reason intuitively, efficiently, and accurately about everyday physical events. Recent accounts suggest that people use mental simulation to make such intuitive physical judgments. But mental simulation models are computationally expensive; how is physical reasoning relatively accurate, while maintaining computational tractability? We suggest that people make use of partial simulation, mentally moving forward in time only parts of the world deemed relevant. We propose a novel partial simulation model, and test it on the physical conjunction fallacy, a recently observed phenomenon [Ludwin-Peery et al. (2020). Few studies have explored potential associations between polyvictimization and cybervictimization and even fewer have involved in college-age sample. As it has been shown in the literature, polyvictimization is associated with higher psychological distress and lower resilience. This study is aimed to model the association between polyvictimization and cybervictimization by testing the mediating role of psychological distress and resilience. The sample included 4,626 undergraduates from France. Participants completed questionnaires assessing cybervictimization, polyvictimization (emotional abuse from parents, exposure to interparental violence, parental neglect, unwanted sexual touching, and unwanted sexual intercourse), psychological distress, and resilience. Results show that each form of victimization considered was significantly associated with cybervictimization. Also, polyvictimized participants presented higher prevalence of cybervictimization. The association between polyvictimization and cybervictimization was partially mediated positively by psychological distress and negatively by resilience. In fact, more cybervictimization was observed among polyvictimized participants with a high score of psychological distress, whereas fewer cybervictimization was observed in those with a high score of resilience. This study provides a new understanding of the mechanisms involved in cybervictimization that can help to better prevent and intervene with victims. Our results suggest that mental health professionals should assess childhood experiences of victimization when they are working with cybervictims. Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide responsible for propagating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and initiating puberty. Pubertal exposure to an immune challenge causes enduring sexual behavior dysfunction in males and females, but the mechanism underlying this stress-induced sexual dysfunction remains unknown. Previous findings show that stress exposure can downregulate the HPG axis in adult females. However, it is unclear whether stress induced HPG axis suppression is limited to adult females or also extends to males and to pubertal animal models. The current study was designed to investigate the sex-specific consequences of a pubertal immune challenge on specific components of the HPG axis. Six-week old pubertal male and female mice were treated with saline or with lipopolysaccharide, a bacterial endotoxin. Expression of hypothalamic Kiss1 and Kiss1R as well as serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and growth hormone were examined. Pubertal lipopolysaccharide treatment decreased hypothalamic Kiss1, but not Kiss1R, expression in both males and females. Furthermore, only males showed decreases in circulating luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones. These results show that pubertal immune challenge suppresses the HPG axis by inhibiting Kiss1 production and decreasing serum gonadotropin concentrations in pubertal males, but points to a different mechanism in pubertal females. Context: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an important public health problem associated with an array of negative consequences. Although prevalence rates are well established from North America, few studies have focused on the extent of CSA and associated outcomes in youth from France.Objectives: This study aimed to: 1) estimate the prevalence of CSA, 2) assess the associations between CSA and health outcomes while exploring possible gender specificities and 3) document the contribution of revictimization on symptom complexity.Method: The sample involved 2309 participants aged between 14 and 23 years old (M = 19.55). Measures assessing CSA, other forms of child maltreatment and mental health problems were administered. Sexual revictimization and a host of protective factors (resilience, coping strategies, parental support) were also assessed.Results: CSA was reported by 13.1% of girls and 4.2% of boys. Regression analyses revealed that CSA was associated with all mental health outcomes except alcohol and drug use (other than cannabis) after controlling for sociodemographics and other forms of child maltreatment. Sexual revictimization was associated with symptom complexity. Emotion-centered and avoidance coping predicted symptom complexity while resilience and paternal support acted as protective factors.Limitations: The study relied on a cross-sectional design with a convenience sample, which limits the generalizability of results. The small number of boys reporting CSA precludes drawing firm conclusions as to the gender specificities in the outcomes associated with CSA.Conclusions: Findings underscore the relevance of developing efficient prevention programs as CSA is linked to a host of negative outcomes. ‘Embodied cognition’ suggests that our bodily experiences broadly shape our cognitive capabilities. We study how embodied experience affects the abstract physical problem-solving styles people use in a virtual task where embodiment does not affect action capabilities. We compare how groups with different embodied experience – 25 children and 35 adults with congenital limb differences versus 45 children and 40 adults born with two hands – perform this task, and find that while there is no difference in overall competence, the groups use different cognitive styles to find solutions. People born with limb differences think more before acting but take fewer attempts to reach solutions. Conversely, development affects the particular actions children use, as well as their persistence with their current strategy. Our findings suggest that while development alters action choices and persistence, differences in embodied experience drive changes in the acquisition of cognitive styles for balancing acting with thinking. Valorization of biomass-derived substrates via electrocatalytic hydrogenation-hydrogenolysis (ECH) is an attractive approach for selective production of organic chemicals. The electrocatalytic activity is strongly dependent on the surface coverage of adsorbed hydrogen radicals, which is a complex function of the catalytically active surface sites, electrolyte (pH and composition) and electrode potential. The performance of carbon-supported catalysts (Pt/C, Ru/C, Pd/C) was explored in the ECH of phenol and guaiacol in a stirred slurry electrochemical reactor where the cathode and anode compartments were separated by a Nafion® 117 membrane. Acid (H2SO4) and neutral (NaCl) catholytes were used. Pt/C showed superior activity in the acid-acid electrolyte pair, while the activity of Ru/C and Pd/C were significantly improved in the neutral-acid catholyte-anolyte pairs. By pairing neutral catholyte and acid anolyte, the anodic protons transported through the membrane can be effectively utilized for ECH reactions. In terms of reaction pathways for guaiacol ECH, ring saturation leading to 2-methoxycyclohexanol was generally the dominant pathway. However, for Pt/C in either 0.2 or 0.5 M NaCl catholyte paired with 0.5 M H2SO4 anolyte the demethoxylation–ring saturation pathway producing cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone was equally competitive at a constant superficial current density of -109 mA cm−2 and 50 0C. Efficient reductive upgrading of lignin model compounds can be achieved under mild conditions via electrocatalysis in the slurry reactor by exploiting synergistic effects between the catalyst and electrolyte. Topics include considered that copyright is one such area where the specialized knowledge needed is rather unique for a music librarian, even though all librarians encounter copyright in their daily work.

The year 2020 marks the 75th edition of Grass and Forage Science. From its beginnings as the Journal of the British Grassland Society, the journal has grown to be the major international journal with a primary emphasis on grasslands society. In this paper, to mark this anniversary we note the contributions of the editorial team, past and present, and the legacy of the journal by noting some of the highly cited papers published over the years and discuss the changing trends in science published in recent years. This includes an emphasis on the changing role of grasslands across the globe and the challenges that changing climate and altered production systems place on grazing agriculture. Two prominent theoretical frameworks in moral psychology, Moral Foundations and Dual Process Theory, share a broad foundational assumption that individual differences in human morality are dispositional and in part due to genetic variation. The only published direct test of heritability, however, found little evidence of genetic influences on moral judgments using instrumentation approaches associated with Moral Foundations Theory. This raised questions about one of the core assumptions underpinning intuitionist theories of moral psychology. Here we examine the heritability of moral psychology using the moral dilemmas approach commonly used in Dual Process Theory research. Using such measures, we find consistent and significant evidence of heritability. These findings have important implications not only for understanding which measures do, or do not, tap into the genetically influenced aspects of moral decision-making, but in better establishing the utility and validity of different intuitionist theoretical frameworks and the source of why people differ in those frameworks. Many animals, and an increasing number of artificial agents, display sophisticated capabilities to perceive and manipulate objects. But human beings remain distinctive in their capacity for flexible, creative tool use--using objects in new ways to act on the world, achieve a goal, or solve a problem. To study this type of general physical problem solving, we introduce the Virtual Tools game. In this game, people solve a large range of challenging physical puzzles in just a handful of attempts. We propose that the flexibility of human physical problem solving rests on an ability to imagine the effects of hypothesized actions, while the efficiency of human search arises from rich action priors which are updated via observations of the world. We instantiate these components in the "sample, simulate, update" (SSUP) model and show that it captures human performance across 30 levels of the Virtual Tools game. More broadly, this model provides a mechanism for explaining how people condense general physical knowledge into actionable, task-specific plans to achieve flexible and efficient physical problem solving. Lignin is a prospective resource for renewable commodity organic chemicals and fuels. In the scheme of a sustainable biorefinery, lignin valorization is essential for enhancing the economic feasibility of the overall biomass transformation processes. Electrocatalysis and electrochemical processes are expected to play a major role in biomass valorization due to the possibility of using renewable electricity sources for in situ production of 'green' H2 and other reagents that are necessary for biomass conversion. Recent advances in the electrocatalytic hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives, including oxygenated aromatic compounds, suggest promising pathways for the synthesis of industrially relevant chemicals, such as ketone-alcohol (KA) oil, the mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol for the production of Nylon polymers. This review presents the prospect of electrocatalytic reduction approaches for a mild synthesis of lignin-based chemicals with emphasis on the potential applications of high current density electrolysis. Feasible electrocatalytic oxidation strategies for lignin depolymerization are also summarized, highlighting the fundamental differences between the electrochemical reductive and oxidative routes. Finally, challenges and opportunities for future development of the electrocatalytic pathways for lignin valorization are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In 2010, an important earthquake devastated Haiti and caused thousands of deaths. In a social context where women are particularly vulnerable, this cross-sectional study examined the associations between sexual assaults experienced by women before the earthquake, the earthquake exposure, the traumatic consequences, and their satisfaction of social support received. Methods: A total of 660 women aged 18 to 86 completed questionnaires assessing exposure to the earthquake, sexual assault victimization, peritraumatic distress, Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and social support. A moderated moderation model was computed to examine associations between exposure to the earthquake, sexual assault, social support, and traumatic consequences. Results: Results showed that 31.06% of women were victims of sexual assault before the earthquake. They presented higher prevalence of peritraumatic distress, PTSD, and depression symptoms, compared to non-victims. The moderated-moderation model showed that sexual assault and exposure to the earthquake were positively associated with traumatic consequences (respectively, B = 0.560, p < 0.001; B = 0.196, p < 0.001), while social support was negatively associated with them (B = −0.095, p < 0.05). Results showed a triple interaction: women victim of sexual assault who were satisfied with received social support are less likely to develop traumatic consequences after being exposed to the earthquake(B = −0.141, p < 0.01). Conclusions: By demonstrating the role of sexual assault in the development of mental health problems after the Haitian earthquake, this study shows the importance for clinicians to investigate interpersonal trauma experienced before or following natural disasters among survivors. Results also indicate the key role of family and communities to help survivors build resilience and coping strategies with their social support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
