New JWST near-infrared imaging of the nearby galaxy NGC 628 from the Cycle 1 program JWST-FEAST is combined with archival JWST mid-infrared imaging to calibrate the 21 $\mu$m emission as a star formation rate indicator (SFR) at $\sim$120 pc scales. The Pa$\alpha$ ($\lambda$1.8756 $\mu$m) hydrogen recombination emission line targeted by FEAST provides a reference SFR indicator that is relatively insensitive to dust attenuation, as demonstrated by combining this tracer with the HST H$\alpha$ imaging. Our analysis is restricted to regions that appear compact in nebular line emission and are sufficiently bright to mitigate effects of both age and stochastic sampling of the stellar initial mass function. We find that the 21 $\mu$m emission closely correlates with the nebular line emission, with a power-law with exponent=1.07$\pm$0.01, in agreement with past results. We calibrate a hybrid SFR indicator using a combination of H$\alpha$ and 24 $\mu$m (extrapolated from 21 $\mu$m) tracers and derive the proportionality constant between the two tracers $b=0.095\pm0.007$, which is $\sim$ 3-5 times larger than previous derivations using large regions/entire galaxies. We model these discrepancies as an increasing contribution to the dust heating by progressively older stellar populations for increasing spatial scales, in agreement with earlier findings that star formation is hierarchically distributed in galaxies. Thus, use of hybrid SFR indicators requires prior knowledge of the mean age of the stellar populations dominating the dust heating, which makes their application uncertain. Conversely, non-linear calibrations of SFRs from L(24) alone are more robust, with a factor $\lesssim$2.5 variation across the entire range of L(24) luminosities from HII regions to galaxies., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures. We investigate the emergence phase of young star clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628. We use JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations to create spatially resolved maps of the Pa$\alpha$-1.87 $\mu$m and Br$\alpha$-4.05 $\mu$m hydrogen recombination lines, as well as the 3.3 $\mu$m and 7.7 $\mu$m emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We extract 953 compact HII regions and analyze the PAH emission and morphology at $\sim$10 pc scales in the associated photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). While HII regions remain compact, radial profiles help us to define three PAH morphological classes: compact ($\sim$ 42%), extended ($\sim$ 34%) and open ($\sim$ 24%). The majority of compact and extended PAH morphologies are associated with very young star clusters ($<$5 Myr), while open PAH morphologies are mainly associated with star clusters older than 3 Myr. We observe a general decrease in the 3.3 $\mu$m and 7.7 $\mu$m PAH band emission as a function of cluster age, while their ratio remains constant with age out to 10 Myr and morphological class. The recovered PAH$_{3.3 \mu{\rm m}}$/PAH$_{7.7 \mu{\rm m}}$ ratio is lower than values reported in the literature for reference models that consider neutral and ionized PAH populations and analyses conducted at galactic scales. The 3.3 $\mu$m and 7.7 $\mu$m bands are typically associated to neutral and ionised PAHs, respectively. While we expected neutral PAHs to be suppressed in proximity of the ionizing source, the constant PAH$_{3.3 \mu{\rm m}}$/PAH$_{7.7 \mu{\rm m}}$ ratio would indicate that both families of molecules disrupt at similar rates in proximity of the HII regions., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. We present maps of ionized gas (traced by Pa$\alpha$ and Br$\alpha$) and 3.3 $\mu$m Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628, derived from new JWST/NIRCam data from the FEAST survey. With this data, we investigate and calibrate the relation between 3.3 $\mu$m PAH emission and star formation rate (SFR) in and around emerging young star clusters (eYSCs) on a scale of ${\sim}40$ pc. We find a tight (correlation coefficient $\rho$${\sim}$0.9) sub-linear (power-law exponent $\alpha$${\sim}$0.75) relation between the 3.3 $\mu$m PAH luminosity surface density and SFR traced by Br$\alpha$ for compact, cospatial (within 0.16$''$ or ${\sim}$7 pc) peaks in Pa$\alpha$, Br$\alpha$, and 3.3 $\mu$m (eYSC-I). The scatter in the relationship does not correlate well with variations in local interstellar medium (ISM) metallicity due to a radial metallicity gradient, but rather is likely due to stochastic sampling of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and variations in the PAH heating and age of our sources. The deviation from a linear relation may be explained by PAH destruction in more intense ionizing environments, variations in age, and IMF stochasticity at intermediate to low luminosities. We test our results with various continuum subtraction techniques using combinations of NIRCam bands and find that they remain robust with only minor differences in the derived slope and intercept. We survey the young star cluster population in the dwarf galaxy NGC4449 with the goal of investigating how stellar feedback may depend on the clusters' properties. Using Ultraviolet(UV)-optical-NearIR(NIR) photometry obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope, we have recovered 99 compact sources exhibiting emission in the Pa$\beta$ hydrogen recombination line. Our analysis reveals these sources possess masses $10^{2}

We analyze the far-ultraviolet spectroscopy of 20 young and massive star clusters (YSCs) in 11 nearby star-forming galaxies. We probe the interstellar gas intervening along the line of sight, detecting several metal absorption lines of a wide range of ionization potentials, from 6.0 eV to 77.5 eV. Multiple-component Voigt fits to the absorption lines are used to study the kinematics of the gas. We find that nearly all targets in the sample feature gas outflowing from 30 up to 190 km per second, often both in the neutral and ionized phase. The outflow velocities correlate with the underlying stellar population properties directly linked to the feedback: the mass of the YSCs, the photon production rate and the instantaneous mechanical luminosity produced by stellar winds and SNe. We detect a neutral inflow in 4 targets, which we interpret as likely not associated with the star cluster but tracing larger scale gas kinematics. A comparison between the outflows energy and that produced by the associated young stellar populations suggests an average coupling efficiency of 10 per cent with a broad scatter. Our results extend the relation found in previous works between galactic outflows and the host galaxy star-formation rate to smaller scales, pointing towards the key role that clustered star formation and feedback play in regulating galaxy growth., Comment: Accepted for publication on the Astronomical Journal on 14th February 2024. 32 pages, 13 figures

We compare the molecular cloud properties in sub-galactic regions of two galaxies, barred spiral NGC 1313, which is forming many massive clusters, and flocculent spiral NGC 7793, which is forming significantly fewer massive clusters despite having a similar star formation rate to NGC 1313. We find that there are larger variations in cloud properties between different regions within each galaxy than there are between the galaxies on a global scale, especially for NGC 1313. There are higher masses, linewidths, pressures, and virial parameters in the arms of NGC 1313 and center of NGC 7793 than in the interarm and outer regions of the galaxies. The massive cluster formation of NGC 1313 may be driven by its greater variation in environments, allowing more clouds with the necessary conditions to arise, although no one parameter seems primarily responsible for the difference in star formation. Meanwhile NGC 7793 has clouds that are as massive and have as much kinetic energy as clouds in the arms of NGC 1313, but have densities and pressures more similar to the interarm regions and so are less inclined to collapse and form stars. The cloud properties in NGC 1313 and NGC 7793 suggest that spiral arms, bars, interarm regions, and flocculent spirals each represent distinct environments with regard to molecular cloud populations. We see surprisingly little difference in surface densities between the regions, suggesting that the differences in surface densities frequently seen between arm and interarm regions of lower-resolution studies are indicative of the sparsity of molecular clouds, rather than differences in their true surface density., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a comparative study of the molecular gas in two galaxies from the LEGUS sample: barred spiral NGC 1313 and flocculent spiral NGC 7793. These two galaxies have similar masses, metallicities, and star formation rates, but NGC 1313 is forming significantly more massive star clusters than NGC 7793, especially young massive clusters (<10 Myr, >10^4 Msol). Using ALMA CO(2-1) observations of the two galaxies with the same sensitivities and resolutions of 13 pc, we directly compare the molecular gas in these two similar galaxies to determine the physical conditions responsible for their large disparity in cluster formation. By fitting size-linewidth relations for the clouds in each galaxy, we find that NGC 1313 has a higher intercept than NGC 7793, implying that its clouds have higher kinetic energies at a given size scale. NGC 1313 also has more clouds near virial equilibrium than NGC 7793, which may be connected to its higher rate of massive cluster formation. However, these virially bound clouds do not show a stronger correlation with young clusters than that of the general cloud population. We find surprisingly small differences between the distributions of molecular cloud populations in the two galaxies, though the largest of those differences are that NGC 1313 has higher surface densities and lower free-fall times., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We use the Hubble Space Telescope ACS camera to obtain the first spatially resolved, nebular imaging in the light of C IV 1548,1551 by using the F150LP and F165LP filters. These observations of the local starburst Mrk 71 in NGC 2366 show emission apparently originating within the interior cavity around the dominant super star cluster (SSC), Knot A. Together with imaging in He II 4686 and supporting STIS FUV spectroscopy, the morphology and intensity of the C IV nebular surface brightness and the C IV / He II ratio map provide direct evidence that the mechanical feedback is likely dominated by catastrophic radiative cooling, which strongly disrupts adiabatic superbubble evolution. The implied extreme mass loading and low kinetic efficiency of the cluster wind are reasonably consistent with the wind energy budget, which is probably enhanced by radiation pressure. In contrast, the Knot B SSC lies within a well-defined superbubble with associated soft X-rays and He II 1640 emission, which are signatures of adiabatic, energy-driven feedback from a supernova-driven outflow. This system lacks clear evidence of C IV from the limb-brightened shell, as expected for this model, but the observations may not be deep enough to confirm its presence. We also detect a small C IV-emitting object that is likely an embedded compact H II region. Its C IV emission may indicate the presence of very massive stars (> 100 M_sun) or strongly pressure-confined stellar feedback., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Accepted to ApJ Letters

We present the first version release of SESAMME, a public, Python-based full spectrum fitting tool for Simultaneous Estimates of Star-cluster Age, Metallicity, Mass, and Extinction. SESAMME compares an input spectrum of a star cluster to a grid of stellar population models with an added nebular continuum component, using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to sample the posterior probability distribution in four dimensions: cluster age, stellar metallicity $Z$, reddening $E(B-V)$, and a normalization parameter equivalent to a cluster mass. SESAMME is highly flexible in the stellar population models that it can use to model a spectrum; our testing and initial science applications use both BPASS and Starburst99. We illustrate the ability of SESAMME to recover accurate ages and metallicities even at a moderate signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ~3 - 5 per wavelength bin) using synthetic, noise-added model spectra of young star clusters. Finally, we test the consistency of SESAMME with other age and metallicity estimates from the literature using a sample of HST/COS far-UV spectra towards young, massive clusters in M83 and NGC 1313. We find that, on the whole, SESAMME infers star cluster properties that are consistent with the literature in both low- and high-metallicity environments., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures + 3 in appendix. Mrk 71 is a low metallicity (Z = 0.16 Z_sun) starburst region in the local dwarf galaxy NGC 2366, hosting two super star clusters (SSCs A and B), and is recognized as a Green Pea (GP) analog with SSC A responsible for the GP properties. We present STIS and FOS far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of the embedded SSC Mrk 71-A obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The STIS FUV spectrum shows the characteristic features of very massive stars (VMS, masses > 100 M_sun) and we derive an age of 1+/-1 Myr by comparison with the Charlot & Bruzual suite of spectral population synthesis models with upper mass limits of 300 and 600 M_sun. We compare the STIS spectrum with all known SSC spectra exhibiting VMS signatures: NGC 5253-5, R136a, NGC 3125-A1 and the z = 2.37 Sunburst cluster. We find that the cluster mass-loss rates and wind velocities, as characterized by the C IV P Cygni profiles and the He II emission line strengths, are very similar over Z = 0.16 to 0.4 Z_sun. This agrees with predictions that the optically thick winds of VMS will be enhanced near the Eddington limit and show little metallicity dependence. We find very strong damped Lyman-alpha absorption with log N(H I) = 22.2 cm-2 associated with Mrk 71-A. We discuss the natal environment of this young SSC in terms of radiatively-driven winds, catastrophic cooling and recent models where the cluster is surrounded by highly pressurized clouds with large neutral columns., Comment: 15 pages accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We investigate the variation in the upper end of stellar initial mass function (uIMF) in 375 young and compact star clusters in five nearby galaxies within $\sim 5$ Mpc. All the young stellar clusters (YSCs) in the sample have ages $\lesssim 4$ Myr and masses above 500 $M_{\odot}$, according to standard stellar models. The YSC catalogs were produced from Hubble Space Telescope images obtained as part of the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) Hubble treasury program. They are used here to test whether the uIMF is universal or changes as a function of the cluster's stellar mass. We perform this test by measuring the H$\alpha$ luminosity of the star clusters as a proxy for their ionizing photon rate, and charting its trend as a function of cluster mass. Large cluster numbers allow us to mitigate the stochastic sampling of the uIMF. The advantage of our approach relative to previous similar attempts is the use of cluster catalogs that have been selected independently of the presence of H$\alpha$ emission, thus removing a potential sample bias. We find that the uIMF, as traced by the H$\alpha$ emission, shows no dependence on cluster mass, suggesting that the maximum stellar mass that can be produced in star clusters is universal, in agreement with previous findings.

Super star cluster (SSC) A1 (3.1E5 Msun) in NGC 3125 has one of the strongest (EW = 4.6 +/- 0.5 Ang) broad (FWHM = 1131 +\- 40 km/s) He II 1640 emission lines in the nearby Universe and constitutes an important template for interpreting observations of extreme He II emitters out to redshifts of z = 2-3. We use Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) observations of A1 to show that there is no significant contamination of the He II line with nebular emission and that the line is redshifted by 121 +/-17 km/s relative to ISM lines. We compare the COS G130M + G160M observations of A1 to recent binary BPASS and single-star Charlot & Bruzual (C&B) simple stellar population (SSP) models with Very Massive Stars (VMS) of up to 300 Msun. We suggest why BPASS models fail to reproduce A1's He II emission. On the other hand, a C&B model with Z = 0.008, age = 2.2 Myr, and VMS approaching the Eddington limit provides an excellent fit to the He II emission and fits reasonably well C III 1175, N V 1238,1241, and C IV 1548, 1551. We present O V 1371 line-profile predictions showing that this line constitutes an important tracer of youth and VMS in galaxies. Finally, we discuss the presence of VMS in CDFS131717, a highly star-forming low-metallicity galaxy located at z = 3.071, which has a tentative detection of O V absorption and strong broad He II emission. These features are rare and hint to the presence of short-lived VMS in the galaxy. We present a first look at the MRS observations of the nucleus of the nearby galaxy M83, taken with MIRI onboard JWST. The observations show a rich set of emission features from the ionized gas, warm molecular gas, and dust. To begin dissecting the complex processes in this part of the galaxy, we divide the observations into four different regions. We find that the strength of the emission features varies strongly from region to region, with the south-east region displaying the weakest features tracing the dust continuum and ISM properties. Comparison between the cold molecular gas traced by the $^{12}$CO (1-0) transition with ALMA and the H$_2$ S(1) transition shows a similar spatial distribution. This is in contrast to the distribution of the much warmer H$_2$ emission from the S(7) transition found to be concentrated around the optical nucleus. We use the rotational emission lines and model the H$_2$ excitation to estimate a total molecular gas mass accounting for the warm H$_2$ component of M($>$50 K)$_{\rm H_{2}}$ = 67.90 ($\pm 5.43$)$\times$10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$. We compare this value to the total gas mass inferred by probing the cold H$_2$ gas through the $^{12}$CO (1-0) emission, M(CO)$_{\rm H_{2}}$ = 17.15$\times$10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$. We estimate that $\sim$75\% of the total molecular gas mass is contained in the warm H$_2$ component. We also identify [\ion{O}{4}] 25.89 $\mu$m and [\ion{Fe}{2}] 25.99 $\mu$m emission. We propose that the diffuse [\ion{Fe}{2}] 25.99 $\mu$m emission might be tracing shocks created during the interactions between the hot wind produced by the starburst and the much cooler ISM above the galactic plane. We study pre-supernova feedback in a sample of $\sim$ 4700 HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy M83, identified on their H$\alpha$ emission. We pectroscopically identify Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars populating the star-forming regions. For each HII region, we compute the pressure of ionised gas ($P_{\rm ion}$) and the direct radiation pressure ($P_{\rm dir}$) acting in the region, and investigate how they vary with galactocentric distance, with the physical properties of the region, and with the pressure of the galactic environment ($P_\mathrm{DE}$). For a subset of $\sim$ 500 regions, we also investigate the link between the pressure terms and the properties of the cluster population (age, mass, and LyC flux). We find that $P_{\rm ion}$ dominates over $P_{\rm dir}$ by at least a factor of 10 on average over the disk. Both pressure terms are strongly enhanced and become almost comparable in the central starburst region. In the disk ($R \geq 0.15~R_e$), we observe that $P_{\rm dir}$ stays approximately constant with galactocentric distance. $P_{\rm dir}$ is positively correlated with an increase in radiation field strength (linked to the negative metallicity gradient in the galaxy), while it decreases in low extinction regions. $P_{\rm ion}$ decreases constantly for increasing galactocentric distances. In general, we observe that HII regions near the center are underpressured with respect to their surroundings, whereas regions in the disk are overpressured and hence expanding. We find that regions hosting younger clusters or having more mass in young star clusters have a higher internal pressure, indicating that clustered star formation is likely playing a dominant role in setting the pressure. Finally, we estimate that only 13 % of HII regions hosting young clusters and WR stars have $f_{\rm esc} \geq 0$.[Abridged], Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a large VLT/MUSE mosaic (3.8 x 3.8 kpc) of the nearby spiral galaxy M83, with a spatial resolution ~20 pc. We obtained the kinematics of the stars and ionised gas, and compared them with molecular gas kinematics from ALMA CO(2-1). We separated the ionised gas into HII regions and diffuse ionised gas (DIG) and determined the fraction of Ha luminosity originating from the DIG (f_DIG). We observe that both stars and gas trace the galactic disk rotation, as well as a fast-rotating nuclear component, likely connected to secular processes driven by the galactic bar. In the gas kinematics, we observe a stream east of the nucleus, redshifted with respect to the disk. The stream is surrounded by an extended ionised gas region with enhanced velocity dispersion and a high ionisation state, which is largely consistent with being ionised by slow shocks. We interpret this feature as either the superposition of the disk and an extraplanar layer of DIG, or as a bar-driven inflow of shocked gas. A double Gaussian component fit to the Ha line also reveals the presence of a nuclear biconic structure whose axis of symmetry is perpendicular to the bar. The two cones appear blue- and redshifted along the line of sight and stand out for having an Ha emission separated by up to 200 km s-1 from that of the disk, and a high velocity dispersion ~80-200 km s-1. At the far end of the cones, we observe that the gas is consistent with being ionised by shocks. These features had never been observed before in M83; we postulate that they are tracing a starburst-driven outflow shocking into the surrounding ISM. Finally, we obtain f_DIG ~ 13% in our field of view. We inspect the emission of the HII regions and DIG in `BPT' diagrams, finding that in HII regions photoionisation accounts for 99.8% of the Ha flux, whereas the DIG has a mixed contribution from photoionisation (94.9%) and shocks (5.1%). We use the angular Two Point Correlation Function (TPCF) to investigate the hierarchical distribution of young star clusters in 12 local (3--18 Mpc) star-forming galaxies using star cluster catalogues obtained with the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} (\textit{HST}) as part of the Treasury Program LEGUS (Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey). The sample spans a range of different morphological types, allowing us to infer how the physical properties of the galaxy affect the spatial distribution of the clusters. We also prepare a range of physically motivated toy models to compare with and interpret the observed features in the TPCFs. We find that, conforming to earlier studies, young clusters ($T \la 10\, \mathrm{Myr}$) have power-law TPCFs that are characteristic of fractal distributions with a fractal dimension $D_2$, and this scale-free nature extends out to a maximum scale $l_{\mathrm{corr}}$ beyond which the distribution becomes Poissonian. However, $l_{\mathrm{corr}}$, and $D_2$ vary significantly across the sample, and are correlated with a number of host galaxy physical properties, suggesting that there are physical differences in the underlying star cluster distributions. We also find that hierarchical structuring weakens with age, evidenced by flatter TPCFs for older clusters ($T \ga 10\, \mathrm{Myr}$), that eventually converges to the residual correlation expected from a completely random large-scale radial distribution of clusters in the galaxy in $\sim 100 \, \mathrm{Myr}$. We study the ionised ISM in NGC 7793 with MUSE/AO, at a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 10 pc. The data are complemented with young star clusters (YSCs), O stars and GMCs observed with HST and ALMA. Using a strong-line method, we find a median $12 + \log(O/H) \sim 8.37$ with a scatter of 0.25 dex, in agreement with previous estimates. The abundance map is rich in substructures, surrounding clusters and massive stars, although clear degeneracies with photoionisation are present. We determine the observed total amount of ionising photons, $Q(H^0)$, from the extinction corrected H$\alpha$ luminosity, and compare it to the expected $Q(H^0)$ obtained by summing the contributions of YSCs and massive stars, to obtain an escape fraction ($f_{esc}$). Overall, we find $f_{esc, HII} = 0.67_{-0.12}^{+0.08}$ for the population of HII regions. We also conclude that the sources of ionisation observed within the FoV are more than sufficient to explain the amount of diffuse ionised gas observed in this region of the galaxy. In general, we find that YSCs located in HII regions have a higher probability to be younger, less massive, and to emit a higher number of ionising photons than clusters in the rest of the field. Finally, we study the optical depth of the regions traced by [SII]/[OIII], finding no systematic trend between the resulting ionisation structure and $f_{esc}$. Multi-wavelength images from the farUV (~0.15 micron) to the sub-millimeter of the central region of the galaxy NGC 3351 are analyzed to constrain its stellar populations and dust attenuation. Despite hosting a ~1 kpc circumnuclear starburst ring, NGC 3351 deviates from the IRX-beta relation, the relation between the infrared-to-UV luminosity ratio and the UV continuum slope (beta) that other starburst galaxies follow. To understand the reason for the deviation, we leverage the high angular resolution of archival nearUV-to-nearIR HST images to divide the ring into ~60-180 pc size regions and model each individually. We find that the UV slope of the combined intrinsic (dust-free) stellar populations in the central region is redder than what is expected for a young model population. This is due to the region's complex star formation history, which boosts the nearUV emission relative to the farUV. The resulting net attenuation curve has a UV slope that lies between those of the starburst attenuation curve (Calzetti et al. 2000) and the Small Magellanic Cloud extinction curve; the total-to-selective attenuation value, R'(V)=4.93, is larger than both. As found for other star-forming galaxies, the stellar continuum of NGC 3351 is less attenuated than the ionized gas, with E(B-V)_{star}=0.40 E(B-V)_{gas}. The combination of the `red' intrinsic stellar population and the new attenuation curve fully accounts for the location of the central region of NGC 3351 on the IRX-beta diagram. Thus, the observed characteristics result from the complex mixture of stellar populations and dust column densities in the circumnuclear region. We present a new catalog and results for the cluster system of the starburst galaxy NGC 4449 based on multi-band imaging observations taken as part of the LEGUS and Halpha-LEGUS surveys. We improve the spectral energy fitting method used to estimate cluster ages and find that the results, particularly for older clusters, are in better agreement with those from spectroscopy. The inclusion of Halpha measurements, the role of stochasticity for low mass clusters, the assumptions about reddening, and the choices of SSP model and metallicity all have important impacts on the age-dating of clusters. A comparison with ages derived from stellar color-magnitude diagrams for partially resolved clusters shows reasonable agreement, but large scatter in some cases. The fraction of light found in clusters relative to the total light (i.e., T_L) in the U, B, and V filters in 25 different ~kpc-size regions throughout NGC 4449 correlates with both the specific Region Luminosity, R_L, and the dominant age of the underlying stellar population in each region. The observed cluster age distribution is found to decline over time as dN/dt ~ t^g, with g=-0.85+/-0.15, independent of cluster mass, and is consistent with strong, early cluster disruption. The mass functions of the clusters can be described by a power law with dN/dM ~ M^b and b=-1.86+/-0.2, independent of cluster age. The mass and age distributions are quite resilient to differences in age-dating methods. There is tentative evidence for a factor of 2-3 enhancement in both the star and cluster formation rate ~100 - 300 Myr ago, indicating that cluster formation tracks star formation generally. The enhancement is probably associated with an earlier interaction event.

The blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 5253 hosts a very young central starburst. The center contains intense radio thermal emission from a massive ultracompact H II region (or "supernebula") and two massive and very young super star clusters (SSCs), which are seen at optical and infrared wavelengths. The spatial correspondence between these three objects over an area of < 0.5 arcsec is very uncertain, and it is usually assumed that one of the optically-detected SSCs coincides with the supernebula. Using the Gaia Data Release 2 catalog, we improve the absolute astrometry of Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet, optical and infrared images by a factor of ~10 and match them to the radio observations with an accuracy of 10-20 mas. We find that there are 3 SSCs at the center of NGC 5253. At optical wavelengths, the two SSCs lie either side of the supernebula, which coincides with a highly obscured region. In the infrared, all 3 SSCs are seen with the supernebula dominating at the longest wavelengths. We examine the properties of the SSCs, which have ages of ~ 1 Myr, are very compact (<0.6 pc) and separated by projected distances of only 1.5 and 5.8 pc. Using MUSE AO data, we probe the ISM in the local spiral galaxy NGC 7793 at a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 10 pc. We identify HII regions and compile a catalogue of supernova remnants (SNRs), planetary nebulae (PNe) and Wolf Rayet stars (WR). We compute electron densities and temperatures from the [SII]6716/6731 and [SIII]6312/9069 line ratios. We study the properties of the ionised gas through BPT diagrams combined with gas velocity dispersion. We spectroscopically confirm 2 previously detected WR stars and a SNR and report the discovery of 7 WR, 1 SNR, and 2 PNe. The diffuse ionized gas (DIG) fraction is between $\sim$ 27 and 42% depending on the method used to define the HII region boundaries. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the DIG exhibits enhanced [SII]/H$\alpha$ and [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratios and a median temperature that is $\sim$ 3000 K higher than in HII regions. We also observe an apparent inverse correlation between temperature and H$\alpha$ surface brightness. Overall, the observed [SII]6716/6731 ratio is consistent within 1$\sigma$ with $n_e$ < 30 cm$^{-3}$, with an almost identical distribution for the DIG and HII regions. The velocity dispersion of the ionised gas indicates that the DIG has a higher degree of turbulence than the HII regions. Comparison with photoionisation and shock models reveals that the diffuse component can only partially be explained via shocks and that it is most likely consistent with photons leaking from density bounded HII regions or with radiation from evolved field stars. Only about 19 Galactic and 25 extra-galactic bona-fide Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are known to date. This incomplete census prevents our understanding of this crucial phase of massive star evolution which leads to the formation of heavy binary black holes via the classical channel. With large samples of LBVs one could better determine the duration and maximum stellar luminosity which characterize this phase. We search for candidate LBVs (cLBVs) in a new galaxy, NGC 7793. For this purpose, we combine high spatial resolution images from two Hubble Space Telescope (HST) programs with optical spectroscopy from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). By combining PSF-fitting photometry measured on F547M, F657N, and F814W images, with restrictions on point-like appearance (at HST resolution) and H{\alpha} luminosity, we find 100 potential cLBVs, 36 of which fall in the MUSE fields. Five of the latter 36 sources are promising cLBVs which have M(V) less than or equal to -7 and a combination of: H{\alpha} with a P-Cygni profile; no [O I] 6300 emission; weak or no [O III] 5007 emission; large [N II]/H{\alpha} relative to H II regions; and [S II] 6716 / [S II] 6731 similar to 1. It is not clear if these five cLBVs are isolated from O-type stars, which would favor the binary formation scenario of LBVs. Our study, which approximately covers one fourth of the optical disc of NGC 7793, demonstrates how by combining the above HST surveys with multi-object spectroscopy from 8-m class telescopes, one can efficiently find large samples of cLBVs in nearby galaxies.

We present a detailed study of the flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 7793, part of the Sculptor group. By analyzing the resolved stellar populations of the galaxy, located at a distance of ~3.7 Mpc, we infer for the first time its radial star formation history (SFH) from Hubble Space Telescope photometry, thanks to both archival and new data from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey. We determine an average star formation rate (SFR) for the galaxy portion covered by our F555W and F814W data of 0.23 +- 0.02 Msun/yr over the whole Hubble time, corresponding to a total stellar mass of 3.09 +- 0.33 x 10^9 Msun in agreement with previous determinations. Thanks to the new data extending to the F336W band, we are able to analyze the youngest stellar populations with a higher time resolution. Most importantly, we recover the resolved SFH in different radial regions of the galaxy; this shows an indication of a growing trend of the present-to-past SFR ratio, increasing from internal to more external regions, supporting previous findings of the inside-out growth of the galaxy., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have explored the role environmental factors play in determining characteristics of young stellar objects in nearby dwarf irregular and Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies. Star clusters are characterized by concentrations, masses, and formation rates, OB associations by mass and mass surface density, O stars by their numbers and near-ultraviolet absolute magnitudes, and HII regions by Halpha surface brightnesses. These characteristics are compared to surrounding galactic pressure, stellar mass density, HI surface density, and star formation rate surface density. We find no trend of cluster characteristics with environmental properties, implying that larger scale effects are more important in determining cluster characteristics or that rapid dynamical evolution erases memory of the initial conditions. On the other hand, the most massive OB associations are found at higher pressure and HI surface density, and there is a trend of higher HII region Halpha surface brightness with higher pressure, suggesting that a higher concentration of massive stars and gas are found preferentially in regions of higher pressure. At low pressures we find massive stars but not bound clusters and OB associations. We do not find evidence for an increase of cluster formation efficiency as a function of star formation rate density. The Hubble Tarantula Treasury Project (HTTP) has provided an unprecedented photometric coverage of the entire star-burst region of 30 Doradus down to the half Solar mass limit. We use the deep stellar catalogue of HTTP to identify all the pre--main-sequence (PMS) stars of the region, i.e., stars that have not started their lives on the main-sequence yet. The photometric distinction of these stars from the more evolved populations is not a trivial task due to several factors that alter their colour-magnitude diagram positions. The identification of PMS stars requires, thus, sophisticated statistical methods. We employ Machine Learning Classification techniques on the HTTP survey of more than 800,000 sources to identify the PMS stellar content of the observed field. Our methodology consists of 1) carefully selecting the most probable low-mass PMS stellar population of the star-forming cluster NGC 2070, 2) using this sample to train classification algorithms to build a predictive model for PMS stars, and 3) applying this model in order to identify the most probable PMS content across the entire Tarantula Nebula. We employ Decision Tree, Random Forest and Support Vector Machine classifiers to categorise the stars as PMS and Non-PMS. The Random Forest and Support Vector Machine provided the most accurate models, predicting about 20,000 sources with a candidateship probability higher than 50 percent, and almost 10,000 PMS candidates with a probability higher than 95 percent. We present a detailed study of the Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 based on both archival and new photometric data from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3. Thanks to its proximity ($D=3.82\pm 0.27$ Mpc) we reach stars 3 magnitudes fainter than the tip of the red giant branch in the F814W filter. The recovered star formation history spans the whole Hubble time, but due to the age-metallicity degeneracy of the red giant branch stars, it is robust only over the lookback time reached by our photometry, i.e. $\sim 3$ Gyr. The most recent peak of star formation is around 10 Myr ago. The average surface density star formation rate over the whole galaxy lifetime is $0.01$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$. From our study it emerges that NGC 4449 has experienced a fairly continuous star formation regime in the last 1 Gyr with peaks and dips whose star formation rates differ only by a factor of a few. The very complex and disturbed morphology of NGC 4449 makes it an interesting galaxy for studies of the relationship between interactions and starbursts, and our detailed and spatially resolved analysis of its star formation history does indeed provide some hints on the connection between these two phenomena in this peculiar dwarf galaxy., Comment: 16 pages, 25 figures. We investigate how star formation is spatially organized in the grand-design spiral NGC 1566 from deep HST photometry with the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS). Our contour-based clustering analysis reveals 890 distinct stellar conglomerations at various levels of significance. These star-forming complexes are organized in a hierarchical fashion with the larger congregations consisting of smaller structures, which themselves fragment into even smaller and more compact stellar groupings. Their size distribution, covering a wide range in length-scales, shows a power-law as expected from scale-free processes. We explain this shape with a simple "fragmentation and enrichment" model. The hierarchical morphology of the complexes is confirmed by their mass--size relation which can be represented by a power-law with a fractional exponent, analogous to that determined for fractal molecular clouds. The surface stellar density distribution of the complexes shows a log-normal shape similar to that for supersonic non-gravitating turbulent gas. Between 50 and 65 per cent of the recently-formed stars, as well as about 90 per cent of the young star clusters, are found inside the stellar complexes, located along the spiral arms. We find an age-difference between young stars inside the complexes and those in their direct vicinity in the arms of at least 10 Myr. This timescale may relate to the minimum time for stellar evaporation, although we cannot exclude the in situ formation of stars. As expected, star formation preferentially occurs in spiral arms. We investigate a novel Bayesian analysis method, based on the Stochastically Lighting Up Galaxies (slug) code, to derive the masses, ages, and extinctions of star clusters from integrated light photometry. Unlike many analysis methods, slug correctly accounts for incomplete IMF sampling, and returns full posterior probability distributions rather than simply probability maxima. We apply our technique to 621 visually-confirmed clusters in two nearby galaxies, NGC 628 and NGC 7793, that are part of the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS). LEGUS provides Hubble Space Telescope photometry in the NUV, U, B, V, and I bands. We analyze the sensitivity of the derived cluster properties to choices of prior probability distribution, evolutionary tracks, IMF, metallicity, treatment of nebular emission, and extinction curve. We find that slug's results for individual clusters are insensitive to most of these choices, but that the posterior probability distributions we derive are often quite broad, and sometimes multi-peaked and quite sensitive to the choice of priors. In contrast, the properties of the cluster population as a whole are relatively robust against all of these choices. We also compare our results from slug to those derived with a conventional non-stochastic fitting code, Yggdrasil. We show that slug's stochastic models are generally a better fit to the observations than the deterministic ones used by Yggdrasil. We present a detailed clustering analysis of the young stellar population across the star-forming ring galaxy NGC 6503, based on the deep HST photometry obtained with the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS). We apply a contour-based map analysis technique and identify in the stellar surface density map 244 distinct star-forming structures at various levels of significance. These stellar complexes are found to be organized in a hierarchical fashion with 95% being members of three dominant super-structures located along the star-forming ring. The size distribution of the identified structures and the correlation between their radii and numbers of stellar members show power-law behaviors, as expected from scale-free processes. The self-similar distribution of young stars is further quantified from their autocorrelation function, with a fractal dimension of ~1.7 for length-scales between ~20 pc and 2.5 kpc. The young stellar radial distribution sets the extent of the star-forming ring at radial distances between 1 and 2.5 kpc. About 60% of the young stars belong to the detected stellar structures, while the remaining stars are distributed among the complexes, still inside the ring of the galaxy. The analysis of the time-dependent clustering of young populations shows a significant change from a more clustered to a more distributed behavior in a time-scale of ~60 Myr. The observed hierarchy in stellar clustering is consistent with star formation being regulated by turbulence across the ring. The rotational velocity difference between the edges of the ring suggests shear as the driving mechanism for this process. We measure the radii and two-dimensional light profiles of a large sample of young, massive star clusters in M83 using archival HST/WFC3 imaging of seven adjacent fields. We use GALFIT to fit the two-dimensional light profiles of the clusters, from which we find effective (half-light) radii, core radii, and slopes of the power-law (EFF) profile ($\eta$). We find lognormal distributions of effective radius and core radius, with medians of $\approx$2.5 pc and $\approx$1.3 pc, respectively. Our results provide strong evidence for a characteristic size of young, massive clusters. The average effective radius and core radius increase somewhat with cluster age. Little to no change in effective radius is observed with increasing galactocentric distance, except perhaps for clusters younger than 100 Myr. We find a shallow correlation between effective radius and mass for the full cluster sample, but a stronger correlation is present for clusters 200-300 Myr in age. Finally, the majority of the clusters are best fit by an EFF model with index $\eta\leq3.0$. There is no strong evidence for change in $\eta$ with cluster age, mass, or galactocentric distance. Our results suggest that clusters emerge from early evolution with similar radii and are not strongly affected by the tidal field of M83. We have discovered a luminous light echo around the normal Type II-Plateau Supernova (SN) 2012aw in Messier 95 (M95; NGC 3351), detected in images obtained approximately two years after explosion with the Wide Field Channel 3 on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by the Legacy ExtraGalactic Ultraviolet Survey (LEGUS). The multi-band observations span from the near-ultraviolet through the optical (F275W, F336W, F438W, F555W, and F814W). The apparent brightness of the echo at the time was ~21--22 mag in all of these bands. The echo appears circular, although less obviously as a ring, with an inhomogeneous surface brightness, in particular, a prominent enhanced brightness to the southeast. The SN itself was still detectable, particularly in the redder bands. We are able to model the light echo as the time-integrated SN light scattered off of diffuse interstellar dust in the SN environment. We have assumed that this dust is analogous to that in the Milky Way with R_V=3.1. The SN light curves that we consider also include models of the unobserved early burst of light from the SN shock breakout. Our analysis of the echo suggests that the distance from the SN to the scattering dust elements along the echo is ~45 pc. The implied visual extinction for the echo-producing dust is consistent with estimates made previously from the SN itself. Finally, our estimate of the SN brightness in F814W is fainter than that measured for the red supergiant star at the precise SN location in pre-SN images, possibly indicating that the star has vanished and confirming it as the likely SN progenitor., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the Snapshot Hubble U-band Cluster Survey (SHUCS), an ongoing deep U-band imaging survey of nearby star-forming galaxies. Thanks to the information provided by the U band, together with archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical data, we are able to constrain reliable ages, masses, and extinctions of the cluster populations of these galaxies. We show some preliminary results from the study of one of the SHUCS galaxies, NGC 2146. Using the recovered cluster ages we try to understand the propagation of the star formation in one of the tidal streams where a ring-like cluster complex has been found. The Ruby Ring, so named due to its appearance, shows a clear ring-like distribution of star clusters around a central object. We find evidence of a spatial and temporal correlation between the central cluster and the clusters in the ring. The Ruby Ring is the product of an intense and localised burst of star formation, similar to the extended cluster complexes observed in M 51 and the Antennae, but more impressive because is quite isolated. We discuss the formation of the Ruby Ring in a "collect & collapse" framework. The predictions made by this model agree quite well with the estimated bubble radius and expansion velocity produced by the feedback from the central cluster, making the Ruby Ring an interesting case of triggered star formation., Comment: 4 pages, to appear in "370 Years of Astronomy in Utrecht", Eds. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provides a unique laboratory for the study of the lifecycle of dust given its low metallicity (~1/5 solar) and relative proximity (~60 kpc). This motivated the SAGE-SMC (Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution in the Tidally-Stripped, Low Metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud) Spitzer Legacy program with the specific goals of studying the amount and type of dust in the present interstellar medium, the sources of dust in the winds of evolved stars, and how much dust is consumed in star formation. This program mapped the full SMC (30 sq. deg.) including the Body, Wing, and Tail in 7 bands from 3.6 to 160 micron using the IRAC and MIPS instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The data were reduced, mosaicked, and the point sources measured using customized routines specific for large surveys. We have made the resulting mosaics and point source catalogs available to the community. The infrared colors of the SMC are compared to those of other nearby galaxies and the 8 micron/24 micron ratio is somewhat lower and the 70 micron/160 micron ratio is somewhat higher than the average. The global infrared spectral energy distribution shows that the SMC has ~3X lower aromatic emission/PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) abundances compared to most nearby galaxies. Infrared color-magnitude diagrams are given illustrating the distribution of different asymptotic giant branch stars and the locations of young stellar objects. Finally, the average spectral energy distribution (SED) of HII/star formation regions is compared to the equivalent Large Magellanic Cloud average HII/star formation region SED. The rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) morphologies of 8 nearby interacting and starburst galaxies (Arp 269, M 82, Mrk 8, NGC 520, NGC 1068, NGC 3079, NGC 3310, NGC 7673) are compared with 54 galaxies at z ~ 1.5 and 46 galaxies at z ~ 4 observed in the GOODS-ACS field. The nearby sample is artificially redshifted to z ~ 1.5 and 4. We compare the simulated galaxy morphologies to real z ~ 1.5 and 4 UV-bright galaxy morphologies. We calculate the Gini coefficient (G), the second-order moment of the brightest 20% of the galaxy's flux (M_20), and the Sersic index (n). We explore the use of nonparametric methods with 2D profile fitting and find the combination of M_20 with n an efficient method to classify galaxies as having merger, exponential disk, or bulge-like morphologies. When classified according to G and M_20, 20/30% of real/simulated galaxies at z ~ 1.5 and 37/12% at z ~ 4 have bulge-like morphologies. The rest have merger-like or intermediate distributions. Alternatively, when classified according to the Sersic index, 70% of the z ~ 1.5 and z ~ 4 real galaxies are exponential disks or bulge-like with n > 0.8, and ~30% of the real galaxies are classified as mergers. The artificially redshifted galaxies have n values with ~35% bulge or exponential at z ~ 1.5 and 4. Therefore, ~20-30% of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) have structures similar to local starburst mergers, and may be driven by similar processes. We assume merger-like or clumpy star-forming galaxies in the GOODS field have morphological structure with values n < 0.8 and M_20 > -1.7. We conclude that Mrk 8, NGC 3079, and NGC 7673 have structures similar to those of merger-like and clumpy star-forming galaxies observed at z ~ 1.5 and 4., Comment: Accepted by The Astronomical Journal May 2009. We present a new grid of ionizing fluxes for O and Wolf-Rayet stars for use with evolutionary synthesis codes and single star H II region analyses. A total of 230 expanding, non-LTE, line-blanketed model atmospheres have been calculated for five metallicities (0.05, 0.2, 0.4, 1 and 2 solar) using the WM-basic code of Pauldrach et al. (2001) and the CMFGEN code of Hillier & Miller (1998). The stellar wind parameters are scaled with metallicity for both O and W-R stars. We incorporate the new models into Starburst99 (Leitherer et al. 1999) and compare the ionizing outputs with Schaerer & Vacca (1998) and Leitherer et al. (1999). The changes in the output ionizing fluxes are dramatic, particularly below 228 A. We also find lower fluxes in the He I continuum for Z > 0.4 solar and ages < 7 Myr because of the increased line blanketing. We test the accuracy of the new models by constructing photoionization models. We show that for the dwarf O star grid, He I 5876/H beta decreases between Z = 1 and twice solar in a similar manner to observations (e.g. Bresolin et al. 1999) due to the increased effect of line blanketing. We therefore suggest that a lowering of the upper mass limit at high abundances is not required to explain the observations. For the case of an instantaneous burst, we plot the softness parameter "eta prime" against the abundance indicator R_23. The new models are coincident with the data of Bresolin et al.
