We present the first major data release of the largest single key-project in area carried out in open time with the Herschel Space Observatory. The Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) is a survey of 600 deg² in five photometric bands - 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 µm - with the Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) cameras. In this paper and the companion Paper II, we present the survey of three fields on the celestial equator, covering a total area of 161.6 deg² and previously observed in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey. This paper describes the Herschel images and catalogues of the sources detected on the SPIRE 250 µm images. The 1σ noise for source detection, including both confusion and instrumental noise, is 7.4, 9.4 and 10.2 mJy at 250, 350 and 500 µm. Our catalogue includes 120 230 sources in total, with 113 995, 46 209 and 11 011 sources detected at >4σ at 250, 350 and 500 µm. The catalogue contains detections at >3σ at 100 and 160 µm for 4650 and 5685 sources, and the typical noise at these wavelengths is 44 and 49 mJy.We include estimates of the completeness of the survey and of the effects of flux bias and also describe a novel method for determining the true source counts. The H-ATLAS source counts are very similar to the source counts from the deeper HerMES survey at 250 and 350 µm, with a small difference at 500 µm. Accurate, precise and rapid acquisition of topographic data is fundamental to many sub-disciplines of physical geography. Technological developments over the past few decades have made fully distributed data sets of centimetric resolution and accuracy commonplace, yet the emergence of Structure from Motion (SfM) with Multi-View Stereo (MVS) in recent years has revolutionised three-dimensional topographic surveys in physical geography by democratising data collection and processing. SfM-MVS originates from the fields of computer vision and photogrammetry, requires minimal expensive equipment or specialist expertise and, under certain conditions, can produce point clouds of comparable quality to existing survey methods (e.g. Terrestrial Laser Scanning). Consequently, applications of SfM-MVS in physical geography have multiplied rapidly. There are many practical options available to physical geographers when planning a SfM-MVS survey (e.g. platforms, cameras, software), yet, many SfM-MVS end-users are uncertain as to the errors associated with each choice and, perhaps most fundamentally, the processes actually taking place as part of the SfM-MVS workflow. This paper details the typical workflow applied by SfM-MVS software packages, reviews practical details of implementing SfM-MVS, combines existing validation studies to assess practically achievable data quality and reviews the range of applications of SfM-MVS in physical geography. The flexibility of the SfM-MVS approach complicates attempts to validate SfM-MVS robustly as each individual validation study will use a different approach (e.g. platform, camera, georeferencing method, etc.). We highlight the need for greater transparency in SfM-MVS processing and enhanced ability to adjust parameters that determine survey quality. Looking forwards, future prospects of SfM-MVS in physical geography are identified through discussion of more recent developments in the fields of image analysis and computer vision. We present Herschel observations of 62 early-type galaxies (ETGs), including 39 galaxies morphologically classified as S0+S0a and 23 galaxies classified as ellipticals using SPIRE at 250, 350, and 500µm as part of the volume-limited Herschel Reference Survey (HRS). We detect dust emission in 24% of the ellipticals and 62% of the S0s. The mean temperature of the dust is Td 23.9±0.8 K,warmer than that found for late-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. The mean dust mass for the entire detected early-type sample is logMd = 6.1 ± 0.1 Mʘ with a mean dust-to-stellar-mass ratio of log(Md / M*) = -4.3 ± 0.1. Including the non-detections, these parameters are logMd = 5.6 ± 0.1 and log(Md /M*) = -5.1 ± 0.1, respectively. The average dust-to-stellar-mass ratio for the early-type sample is fifty times lower, with larger dispersion, than the spiral galaxies observed as part of the HRS, and there is an order-of-magnitude decline in Md / M* between the S0s and ellipticals. We use UV and optical photometry to show that virtually all the galaxies lie close to the red sequence yet the large number of detections of cool dust, the gas-to-dust ratios, and the ratios of far-infrared to radio emission all suggest that many ETGs contain a cool interstellar medium similar to that in late-type galaxies. We show that the sizes of the dust sources in S0s are much smaller than those in early-type spirals and the decrease in the dust-to-stellar-mass ratio from early-type spirals to S0s cannot simply be explained by an increase in the bulge-to-disk ratio. These results suggest that the disks in S0s contain much less dust (and presumably gas) than the disks of early-type spirals and this cannot be explained simply by current environmental effects, such as ram-pressure stripping. The wide range in the dust-to-stellar-mass ratio for ETGs and the lack of a correlation between dust mass and optical luminosity suggest that much of the dust in the ETGs detected by Herschel has been acquired as the result of interactions, although we show these are unlikely to have had a major effect on the stellar masses of the ETGs. The Herschel observations tentatively suggest that in the most massive systems, the mass of interstellar medium is unconnected to the evolution of the stellar populations in these galaxies. ABSTRACT We present the first results of a multiwavelength survey, incorporating Herschel-, Spitzer, GALEX and Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations, of a 1°× 1° field centred on Centaurus A. As well as detecting the inner lobes of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) jet and counterjet, we have found two clouds, bright at submillimetre wavelengths, ∼15 kpc from the centre of Cen A that are co-aligned with the jets. Flux measurements at Herschel wavelengths have proved vital in constraining fits to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The clouds are well fitted by a single-temperature, modified blackbody spectrum (β= 2) indicating that we are looking at two cold dust clouds on the outskirts of Cen A. The temperature and masses of the clouds are K, K; , and the gas-dust ratio for both clouds is ∼100. The measured values for the northern dust cloud are consistent with previous measurements from ISO while the southern cloud is a new submillimetre detection. The two dust clouds are located at the termini of the partial H i ring that surrounds Cen A which is also where the gas column density peaks. The Herschel survey encompasses the partial H i ring yet we find no evidence of dust emission in any other part of the ring. Assuming that the gas-dust ratio is the same in the rest of the ring, dust mass upper limits in the H i ring are consistent with low column density dust being present but falling below the SPIRE detection limit. We have discussed the origin of these clouds and various possible heating mechanisms. The observations favour a scenario in which the gas and dust were once part of a late-type galaxy, which has since merged with Cen A. The dominant heating mechanism which adequately explains the observed temperatures in both clouds is heating from the evolved stellar population within Cen A. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To use molecular beacon based nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (NASBA) to develop a rapid, sensitive, specific detection method for norovirus (NV) genogroupII (GII). Methods and Results: A method to detect NV GII from environmental samples using real-time NASBA was developed. This method was routinely sensitive to 100 copies of target RNA and intermittent amplification occurred with as few as 10 copies. Quantitative estimates of viral load were possible over at least four orders of magnitude. Conclusions: The NASBA method described here is a reliable and sensitive assay for the detection of NV. This method has the potential to be linked to a handheld NASBA device that would make this real-time assay a portable and inexpensive alternative to bench-top, lab-based assays. Significance and Impact of the Study: The development of the real-time NASBA assay described here has resulted in a simple, rapid (<1 h), convenient testing format for NV. Over the past decade, studies of dust in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) have shown radial variations in the dust emissivity index (β). Understanding the astrophysical reasons behind these radial variations may give clues about the chemical composition of dust grains, their physical structure, and the evolution of dust. We use 12CO(J  = 1 |$\longrightarrow$| 0) observations taken by the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy and dust maps derived from Herschel images, both with an angular resolution of 8 arcsec and with spatial resolution of 30 pc, to study variations in β across an area of ≈18.6 kpc2 in M31. We extract sources, which we identify as molecular clouds, by applying the astrodendro algorithm to the 12CO and dust maps, which as a byproduct allows us to compare continuum emission from dust and CO emission as alternative ways of finding molecular clouds. We then use these catalogues to investigate whether there is evidence that β is different inside and outside molecular clouds. Our results confirm the radial variations of β seen in previous studies. However, we find little difference between the average β inside molecular clouds compared with that outside molecular clouds, in disagreement with models that predict an increase of β in dense environments. Finally, we find some clouds traced by dust with very little CO, which may be either clouds dominated by atomic gas or clouds of molecular gas that contain little CO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the evolution of the gas mass fraction for galaxies in the COSMOS field using submillimetre emission from dust at 850  μ m. We use stacking methodologies on the 850   μ m S2COSMOS map to derive the gas mass fraction of galaxies out to high redshifts, 0 ≤ z ≤ 5, for galaxies with stellar masses of |$10^{9.5} \lt M_* (\rm M_{\odot }) \lt 10^{11.75}$|⁠. In comparison to previous literature studies we extend to higher redshifts, include more normal star-forming galaxies (on the main sequence), and also investigate the evolution of the gas mass fraction split by star-forming and passive galaxy populations. We find our stacking results broadly agree with scaling relations in the literature. We find tentative evidence for a peak in the gas mass fraction of galaxies at around z ∼ 2.5–3, just before the peak of the star formation history of the Universe. We find that passive galaxies are particularly devoid of gas, compared to the star-forming population. We find that even at high redshifts, high stellar mass galaxies still contain significant amounts of gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MUSCAT is a new large-format 1.1 mm continuum camera for local and extra-galactic astronomy currently being installed at the 50 m Large Millimetre Telescope Alfonso Serrano, LMT. The focal plane is populated with 1458 feedhorn coupled Aluminium LEKIDs, cooled to 130 mk, and read out with 6 frequency division multiplexed RF readout chains, each with a 500 MHz bandwidth. The nominal mux ratio is ∼ 250 resonators per chain with an average spacing of 2 MHz between resonators. In each RF chain, the multiplexed waveform generation/decomposition is performed with the BLAST-TNG firmware on a ROACH2 FPGA board with a MUSIC DAC/ADC. The quadrature modulated IF signals are mixed to and from the LEKID readout band on a custom card that houses IQ mixers, a programmable synthesizer, and additional programmable input and output gain control and filtering. Within the cryostat, the RF signals are attenuated prior to reaching the focal plane array and then amplified at 4K. A novel software system controls all the programmable hardware and handles instructions from the LMT instrument control system to record and store observation data, as well as performing automated resonator retuning and providing results of quick look analysis to the telescope operators. We present SCUBA-2 450  and 850  |$\mu$| m data of the mature redshift 2 cluster CLJ1449. We combine this with archival Herschel data to explore the star-forming properties of CLJ1449. Using high-resolution Atacama Large Millimetre Array and Jansky Very Large Array data we identify potentially confused galaxies, and use the Bayesian inference tool XID+ to estimate fluxes for them. Using archival optical and near-infrared data with the energy-balance code cigale we calculate star formation rates and stellar masses for all our cluster members, and find that the star formation rate varies between 20 and 1600 M⊙yr−1 over the entire 3 Mpc radial range. The central 0.5 Mpc region itself has a total star formation rate of 800  ±  200 M⊙yr−1, which corresponds to a star formation rate density of (1.2  ±  0.3) × 104 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3, which is approximately five orders of magnitude greater than expected field values. When comparing this cluster to those at lower redshifts we find that there is an increase in star formation rate per unit volume towards the centre of the cluster. This indicates that there is indeed a reversal in the star formation/density relation in CLJ1449. Based on the radial star formation rate density profile, we see evidence for an elevation in the star formation rate density, even out to radii of 3 Mpc. At these radii the elevation could be an order of magnitude greater than field values, but the exact number cannot be determined due to ambiguity in the redshift associations. If this is the case it would imply that this cluster is still accreting material which is possibly interacting and undergoing vigorous star formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new Herschel -derived images of warm dust in the Andromeda galaxy, M31, with unprecedented spatial resolution (∼30 pc), column density accuracy, and constraints on the three-dimensional distributions of dust temperature and dust opacity index (hence grain size and composition), based on the new ppmap Bayesian analysis procedure. We confirm the overall radial variation of dust opacity index reported by other recent studies, including the central decrease within ∼3 kpc of the nucleus. We also investigate the detailed distribution of dust in the nuclear region, a prominent feature of which is an ∼500 pc bar-like structure seen previously in H α. The nature of this feature has been the subject of some debate. Our maps show it to be the site of the warmest dust, with a mean line-of-sight temperature ∼30 K. A comparison with the stellar distribution, based on 2MASS data, provides strong evidence that it is a gravitationally induced bar. A comparison with radial velocity maps suggests the presence of an inflow towards the nucleus from opposite directions along this bar, fed presumably by the nuclear spiral with which it appears to connect. Such behaviour is common in large-scale bars in spiral galaxies, as is the phenomenon of nested bars whereby a subkiloparsec nuclear bar exists within a large-scale primary bar. The evolution of the dust grain size distribution has been studied in recent years with great detail in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations taking into account all the channels under which dust evolves in the interstellar medium. We present a systematic analysis of the observed spectral energy distribution of a large sample of galaxies in the local Universe in order to derive not only the total dust masses but also the relative mass fraction between small and large dust grains (DS / DL). Simulations reproduce fairly well the observations except for the high-stellar mass regime where dust masses tend to be overestimated. We find that ∼45 per cent of galaxies exhibit DS / DL consistent with the expectations of simulations, while there is a subsample of massive galaxies presenting high DS / DL (log (DS / DL) ∼ −0.5), and deviating from the prediction in simulations. For these galaxies which also have high-molecular gas mass fractions and metallicities, coagulation is not an important mechanism affecting the dust evolution. Including diffusion, transporting large grains from dense regions to a more diffuse medium where they can be easily shattered, would explain the observed high DS / DL values in these galaxies. With this study, we reinforce the use of the small-to-large grain mass ratio to study the relative importance of the different mechanisms in the dust life cycle. Multiphase hydrodynamical simulations with detailed feedback prescriptions and more realistic subgrid models for the dense phase could help to reproduce the evolution of the dust grain size distribution traced by observations. We examine the far-infrared (FIR) properties of a sample of 5391 optically selected QSOs in the 0.5 < z < 2.65 redshift range down to log [ν L ν, 2500(erg s−1)] > 44.7, using SPIRE data from Herschel -ATLAS. We split the sample in a grid of 74 luminosity–redshift bins and compute the average optical–IR spectral energy distribution (SED) in each bin. By normalizing an intrinsic active galactic nucleus (AGN) template to the AGN optical power (at 5100 Å), we decompose the total IR emission (L IR; 8–1000 µm) into an AGN (L IR, AGN) and star-forming component (L IR, SF). We find that the AGN contribution to L IR increases as a function of AGN power, manifesting as a reduction of the 'FIR bump' in the average QSO SEDs. We note that L IR, SF does not correlate with AGN power; the mean star formation rates (SFRs) of AGN host galaxies are a function of redshift only and they range from ∼6 M⊙ yr−1 at z ∼ 0 to a plateau of ≲ 200 M⊙ yr−1 at z ∼ 2.6. Our results indicate that the accuracy of FIR emission as a proxy for SFR decreases with increasing AGN luminosity. We show that, at any given redshift, observed trends between IR luminosity (whether monochromatic or total) and AGN power (in the optical or X-rays) can be explained by a simple model which is the sum of two components: (i) the IR emission from star formation, uncorrelated with AGN power and (ii) the IR emission from AGN, directly proportional to AGN power in the optical or X-rays. We describe a far-infrared survey of the Coma cluster and the galaxy filament it resides within. Our survey covers an area of ~150 deg² observed by Herschel H-ATLAS (Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey) in five bands at 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 μm. The SDSS spectroscopic survey (mr ≤ 17.8) is used to define an area (within the virial radius) and redshift selected (4268 < v < 9700 km s-1) sample of 744 Coma cluster galaxies - the Coma Cluster Catalogue. For comparison, we also define a sample of 951 galaxies in the connecting filament - the Coma Filament Catalogue. The optical positions and parameters are used to define appropriate apertures to measure each galaxy's far-infrared emission. We have detected 99 of 744 (13 per cent) and 422 of 951 (44 per cent) of the cluster and filament galaxies in the SPIRE 250 μm band. We consider the relative detection rates of galaxies of different morphological types finding that it is only the S0/Sa population that shows clear differences between the cluster and filament. We find no differences between the dust masses and temperatures of cluster and filament galaxies with the exception of early-type galaxy dust temperatures, which are significantly hotter in the cluster than in the filament (X-ray heating?). In this paper, we present the third data release (DR3) of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). We identify likely near-infrared counterparts to submillimetre sources in the South Galactic Pole (SGP) field using the VISTA VIKING survey. We search for the most probable counterparts within 15 arcsec of each Herschel source using a probability measure based on the ratio between the likelihood the true counterpart is found close to the submillimetre source and the likelihood that an unrelated object is found in the same location. For 110 374 (57.0 per cent) sources, we find galaxies on the near-infrared images where the probability that the galaxy is associated to the source is greater than 0.8. We estimate the false identification rate to be 4.8 per cent, with a probability that the source has an associated counterpart on the VIKING images of 0.835 ± 0.009. We investigate the effects of gravitational lensing and present 41 (0.14 deg−2) candidate lensed systems with observed flux densities >100 mJy at 500 μm. We include in the data release a probability that each source is gravitationally lensed and discover an additional 5923 sources below 100 mJy that have a probability greater than 0.94 of being gravitationally lensed. We estimate that ∼400–1 000 sources have multiple true identifications in VIKING based on the similarity of redshift estimates for multiple counterparts close to a Herschel source. We present an analysis of the dust and gas in Andromeda, using Herschel images sampling the entire far-infrared peak. We fit a modified-blackbody model to ∼4000 quasi-independent pixels with spatial resolution of ∼140 pc and find that a variable dust-emissivity index (β) is required to fit the data. We find no significant long-wavelength excess above this model, suggesting there is no cold dust component. We show that the gas-to-dust ratio varies radially, increasing from ∼20 in the center to ∼70 in the star-forming ring at 10 kpc, consistent with the metallicity gradient. In the 10 kpc ring the average β is ∼1.9, in good agreement with values determined for the Milky Way (MW). However, in contrast to the MW, we find significant radial variations in β, which increases from 1.9 at 10 kpc to ∼2.5 at a radius of 3.1 kpc and then decreases to 1.7 in the center. The dust temperature is fairly constant in the 10 kpc ring (ranging from 17 to 20 K), but increases strongly in the bulge to ∼30 K. Within 3.1 kpc we find the dust temperature is highly correlated with the 3.6 μm flux, suggesting the general stellar population in the bulge is the dominant source of dust heating there. At larger radii, there is a weak correlation between the star formation rate and dust temperature. We find no evidence for “dark gas” in M31 in contrast to recent results for the MW. Finally, we obtained an estimate of the CO X-factor by minimizing the dispersion in the gas-to-dust ratio, obtaining a value of (1.9 ± 0.4) × 1020 cm–2 [K km s–1]–1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP). This project collates, curates, homogenizes, and creates derived data products for most of the premium multiwavelength extragalactic data sets. The sky boundaries for the first data release cover 1270 deg2 defined by the Herschel SPIRE extragalactic survey fields; notably the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) and the Herschel Atlas survey (H-ATLAS). Here, we describe the motivation and principal elements in the design of the project. Guiding principles are transparent or 'open' methodologies with care for reproducibility and identification of provenance. A key element of the design focuses around the homogenization of calibration, meta data, and the provision of information required to define the selection of the data for statistical analysis. We apply probabilistic methods that extract information directly from the images at long wavelengths, exploiting the prior information available at shorter wavelengths and providing full posterior distributions rather than maximum-likelihood estimates and associated uncertainties as in traditional catalogues. With this project definition paper, we provide full access to the first data release of HELP; Data Release 1 (DR1), including a monolithic map of the largest SPIRE extragalactic field at 385 deg2 and 18 million measurements of PACS and SPIRE fluxes. We also provide tools to access and analyse the full HELP data base. This new data set includes far-infrared photometry, photometric redshifts, and derived physical properties estimated from modelling the spectral energy distributions over the full HELP sky. We use the Point Process MAPping (PPMAP) algorithm to reanalyse the Herschel and SCUBA-2 observations of the L1688 and L1689 subregions of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. PPMAP delivers maps with high resolution (here 14 arcsec, corresponding to |${\sim}0.01\, {\rm pc}$| at |${\sim}140\, {\rm pc}$|⁠), by using the observations at their native resolutions. PPMAP also delivers more accurate dust optical depths, by distinguishing dust of different types and at different temperatures. The filaments and pre-stellar cores almost all lie in regions with |$N_{\rm H_2}\gtrsim 7\times 10^{21}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}$| (corresponding to A V ≳ 7). The dust temperature, T , tends to be correlated with the dust opacity index, β, with low T and low β concentrated in the interiors of filaments. The one exception to this tendency is a section of filament in L1688 that falls – in projection – between the two B stars: S1 and HD147889; here T and β are relatively high, and there is compelling evidence that feedback from these two stars has heated and compressed the filament. Filament fwhms are typically in the range |$0.10$| to |$0.15\, {\rm pc}$|⁠. Most filaments have line-densities in the range |$25$| to |$65\, {\rm M_{\odot }\, pc^{-1}}$|⁠. If their only support is thermal gas pressure, and the gas is at the canonical temperature of |$10\, {\rm K}$|⁠ , the filaments are highly supercritical. However, there is some evidence from ammonia observations that the gas is significantly warmer than this, and we cannot rule out the possibility of additional support from turbulence and/or magnetic fields. On the basis of their spatial distribution, we argue that most of the starless cores are likely to disperse (rather than evolving to become pre-stellar). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Herschel Reference Survey (HRS) is a guaranteed time Herschel key project aimed at studying the physical properties of the interstellar medium in galaxies of the nearby universe. This volume limited, K-band selected sample is composed of galaxies spanning the whole range of morphological types (from ellipticals to late-type spirals) and environments (from the field to the centre of the Virgo Cluster). We present flux density measurements of the whole sample of 323 galaxies of the HRS in the three bands of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE), at 250 μm, 350 μm and 500 μm. Aperture photometry is performed on extended galaxies and point spread function (PSF) fitting on timeline data for unresolved objects; we carefully estimate errors and upper limits. The flux densities are found to be in good agreement with those of the HeViCS and KINGFISH key projects in all SPIRE bands, and of the Planck consortium at 350 μm and 550 μm, for the galaxies in common. This submillimetre catalogue of nearby galaxies is a benchmark for the study of the dust properties in the local universe, giving the zero redshift reference for any cosmological survey. We have used the ratio of column densities derived independently from the 850- μ m continuum James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Plane Survey and the 13CO/C18O (J  = 3 → 2) Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey to produce maps of the dense-gas mass fraction (DGMF) in two slices of the Galactic plane centred at ℓ = 30° and 40°. The observed DGMF is a metric for the instantaneous clump formation efficiency (CFE) in the molecular gas. We split the two fields into velocity components corresponding to the spiral arms that cross them, and a two-dimensional power-spectrum analysis of the spiral-arm DGMF maps reveals a break in slope at the approximate size scale of molecular clouds. We interpret this as the characteristic scale of the amplitude of variations in the CFE and a constraint on the dominant mechanism regulating the CFE and, hence, the star formation efficiency in CO-traced clouds. We present complicated dust structures within multiple regions of the candidate supernova remnant (SNR) the 'Tornado' (G357.7–0.1) using observations with Spitzer and Herschel. We use point process mapping, ppmap , to investigate the distribution of dust in the Tornado at a resolution of 8 arcsec, compared to the native telescope beams of 5–36 arcsec. We find complex dust structures at multiple temperatures within both the head and the tail of the Tornado, ranging from 15 to 60 K. Cool dust in the head forms a shell, with some overlap with the radio emission, which envelopes warm dust at the X-ray peak. Akin to the terrestrial sandy whirlwinds known as 'dust devils', we find a large mass of dust contained within the Tornado. We derive a total dust mass for the Tornado head of 16.7  |$\rm M_{\odot }$|⁠ , assuming a dust absorption coefficient of κ300 = 0.56  |$\rm m^2\, kg^{-1}$|⁠ , which can be explained by interstellar material swept up by a SNR expanding in a dense region. The X-ray, infrared, and radio emission from the Tornado head indicate that this is a SNR. The origin of the tail is more unclear, although we propose that there is an X-ray binary embedded in the SNR, the outflow from which drives into the SNR shell. Scaling laws of dust, H  i gas, and metal mass with stellar mass, specific star formation rate, and metallicity are crucial to our understanding of the build-up of galaxies through their enrichment with metals and dust. In this work, we analyse how the dust and metal content varies with specific gas mass (M H  i / M ⋆) across a diverse sample of 423 nearby galaxies. The observed trends are interpreted with a set of Dust and Element evolUtion modelS (DEUS) – including stellar dust production, grain growth, and dust destruction – within a Bayesian framework to enable a rigorous search of the multidimensional parameter space. We find that these scaling laws for galaxies with −1.0 ≲ log  M H  i / M ⋆ ≲ 0 can be reproduced using closed-box models with high fractions (37–89  |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of supernova dust surviving a reverse shock, relatively low grain growth efficiencies (ϵ = 30–40), and long dust lifetimes (1–2 Gyr). The models have present-day dust masses with similar contributions from stellar sources (50–80  |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) and grain growth (20–50  |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). Over the entire lifetime of these galaxies, the contribution from stardust (>90  |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) outweighs the fraction of dust grown in the interstellar medium (<10  |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). Our results provide an alternative for the chemical evolution models that require extremely low supernova dust production efficiencies and short grain growth time-scales to reproduce local scaling laws, and could help solving the conundrum on whether or not grains can grow efficiently in the interstellar medium. Using the Eight MIxer Receiver (EMIR) instrument on the Institut de RadioAstronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30-m telescope, we conducted a spectroscopic redshift search of seven z phot ∼ 4 submillimetre bright galaxies selected from the Herschel Bright Sources sample with fluxes at 500 μm greater than 80 mJy. For four sources, we obtained spectroscopic redshifts between 3.4 < z < 4.1 through the detection of multiple CO-spectral lines with J  ≥ 3. Later, we detected low- J transitions for two of these sources with the Green Bank Telescope including the CO(1–0) transition. For the remaining three sources, more data are needed to determine the spectroscopic redshift unambiguously. The measured CO luminosities and line widths suggest that all these sources are gravitationally lensed. These observations demonstrate that the 2 mm window is indispensable to confirm robust spectroscopic redshifts for z < 4 sources. The availability of computing devices and the proliferation of electronic texts (the so-called 'e-texts') in centres for literary and linguistic computing in major universities have encouraged non-traditional applications of statistics. With the drudgery of computation and text encoding diminished, research in the field of computational stylistics is accelerating. In this paper, it is shown how projections onto the Cartesian plane of 25-dimensional vectors related to the frequency of occurrence of 25 prepositions can distinguish between Oscar Wilde's plays and essays. Because of the increased presence of computers in work and everyday life and the demographic "graying" of America, there is a need for interface designs that promote accessibility for older people. This study examined age differences in the performance of basic computer mouse control techniques. An additional goal of the study was to examine the influence of age-related changes in psychomotor abilities on mouse control. A total of 60 participants in 3 age groups (20-39 years, 40-59 years, and 60-75 years) performed 4 target acquisition tasks (pointing, clicking, double-clicking, and dragging) using a computer mouse. The data indicated that the older participants had more difficulty performing mouse tasks than the younger participants. Differences in performance attributable to age were found for the more complex tasks (clicking and double-clicking). Furthermore, age-related changes in psychomotor abilities were related to age differences in performance. We discuss applications to computer interface designs. Abstract. The gut epithelium represents a continuous developmental system in which cell proliferation in intestinal crypts is followed by the sequential expression of digestive and absorptive functions as enterocytes migrate out of crypts to the tips of intestinal villi. We have developed a mathematical model in the present work to mimic these sequential aspects of enterocyte differentiation. Using this model allows the characteristics of lactase expression to be ascribed to transcriptional control. In the case of a glucose transporter, however, it became necessary to assume an additional translational control that decreased exponentially as enterocytes migrated along villi. The suggestion that this type of modelling is useful in predicting which set of enterocytes is likely to use translation or transcription to control gene expression is also discussed. We search for far-infrared (FIR) counterparts of known supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galactic plane (360° in longitude and |$b = \pm \, 1^{\circ }$|⁠) at 70–500  μ m with Herschel. We detect dust signatures in 39 SNRs out of 190, made up of 13 core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), including 4 Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe), and 2 Type Ia SNe. A further 24 FIR detected SNRs have unknown types. We confirm the FIR detection of ejecta dust within G350.1−0.3, adding to the known sample of ∼ 10 SNRs containing ejecta dust. We discover dust features at the location of a radio core at the centre of G351.2+0.1, indicating FIR emission coincident with a possible Crab-like compact object, with dust temperature and mass of Td  = 45.8 K and Md  = 0.18 M⊙, similar to the PWN G54.1+0.3. We show that the detection rate is higher among young SNRs. We produce dust temperature maps of 11 SNRs and mass maps of those with distance estimates, finding dust at temperatures |$15\, \lesssim \, T_d\, \lesssim \, 40$|  K. If the dust is heated by shock interactions the shocked gas must be relatively cool and/or have a low density to explain the observed low grain temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have analysed Herschel observations of M31, using the ppmap  procedure. The resolution of ppmap  images is sufficient (⁠|$\sim 31\, {\rm pc}$| on M31) that we can analyse far-IR dust emission on the scale of giant molecular clouds. By comparing ppmap  estimates of the far-IR emission optical depth at |$300\, \mu {\rm m}\, (\tau _{{300}})$|⁠ , and the near-IR extinction optical depth at |$1.1\, \mu {\rm m}\, (\tau _{{1.1}})$| obtained from the reddening of Red Giant Branch (RGB) stars, we show that the ratio |${\cal R}^{\mathrm{ obs.}}_\tau \equiv \tau _{{1.1}}/\tau _{{300}}$| falls in the range |$500\lesssim {\cal R}^{\mathrm{ obs.}}_\tau \lesssim 1500$|⁠. Such low values are incompatible with many commonly used theoretical dust models, which predict values of |${\cal R}^{\mathrm{ model}}_\kappa \equiv \kappa _{{1.1}}/\kappa _{{300}}$| (where κ is the dust opacity coefficient) in the range |$2500\lesssim {\cal R}^{\mathrm{ model}}_\kappa \lesssim 4000$|⁠. That is, unless a large fraction, |$\gtrsim 60{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , of the dust emitting at |$300\, \mu {\rm m}$| is in such compact sources that they are unlikely to intercept the lines of sight to a distributed population like RGB stars. This is not a new result: variants obtained using different observations and/or different wavelengths have already been reported by other studies. We present two analytic arguments for why it is unlikely that |$\gtrsim 60{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the emitting dust is in sufficiently compact sources. Therefore it may be necessary to explore the possibility that the discrepancy between observed values of |${\cal R}^{\mathrm{ obs.}}_\tau$| and theoretical values of |${\cal R}^{\mathrm{ model}}_\kappa$| is due to limitations in existing dust models. ppmap  also allows us to derive optical-depth weighted mean values for the emissivity index, β ≡ −dln (κλ)/dln (λ), and the dust temperature, T , denoted |${\bar{\beta }}$| and |${\bar{T}}$|⁠. We show that, in M31, |${\cal R}^{\mathrm{ obs.}}_\tau$| is anticorrelated with |${\bar{\beta }}$| according to |${\cal R}^{\mathrm{ obs.}}_\tau \simeq 2042(\pm 24)-557(\pm 10){\bar{\beta }}$|⁠. We have analysed the Herschel and SCUBA-2 dust continuum observations of the main filament in the Taurus L1495 star-forming region, using the Bayesian fitting procedure ppmap. (i) If we construct an average profile along the whole length of the filament, it has FWHM |$\simeq 0.087\pm 0.003\, {\rm pc};\,\,$| but the closeness to previous estimates is coincidental. (ii) If we analyse small local sections of the filament, the column-density profile approximates well to the form predicted for hydrostatic equilibrium of an isothermal cylinder. (iii) The ability of ppmap to distinguish dust emitting at different temperatures, and thereby to discriminate between the warm outer layers of the filament and the cold inner layers near the spine, leads to a significant reduction in the surface-density, |$\varSigma$|⁠ , and hence in the line-density, μ. If we adopt the canonical value for the critical line-density at a gas-kinetic temperature of |$10\, {\rm K}$|⁠ , |$\mu _{{\rm CRIT}}\simeq 16\, {\rm M_{\odot }\, pc^{-1}}$|⁠ , the filament is on average trans-critical, with |${\bar{\mu }}\sim \mu _{{\rm CRIT}};\,\,$| local sections where μ > μCRIT tend to lie close to prestellar cores. (iv) The ability of ppmap to distinguish different types of dust, i.e. dust characterized by different values of the emissivity index, β, reveals that the dust in the filament has a lower emissivity index, β ≲ 1.5, than the dust outside the filament, β ≳ 1.7, implying that the physical conditions in the filament have effected a change in the properties of the dust. We use a sub-set of the DustPedia galaxy sample (461 galaxies) to investigate the effect the environment has had on galaxies. We consider Virgo cluster and field samples and also assign a density contrast parameter to each galaxy, as defined by the local density of SDSS galaxies. We consider their chemical evolution (using MDust/MBaryon and MGas/MBaryon), their specific star formation rate (SFR/MStars), star formation efficiency (SFR/MGas), stars-to-dust mass ratio (MStars/MDust), gas-to-dust mass ratio (MGas/MDust) and the relationship between star formation rate per unit mass of dust and dust temperature (SFR/MDust and TDust). Late type galaxies (later than Sc) in all of the environments can be modelled using simple closed box chemical evolution and a simple star formation history (SFR(t) ∝ t exp−t/τ). For earlier type galaxies the physical mechanisms that give rise to their properties are clearly much more varied and require a more complicated model (mergers, gas in or outflow). However, we find little or no difference in the properties of galaxies of the same morphological type within the cluster, field or with different density contrasts. It appears that it is morphology, how and whenever this is laid down, and consistent internal physical processes that primarily determine the derived properties of galaxies in the DustPedia sample and not processes related to differences in the local environment. We present measurements of the angular correlation function of sub-millimetre (sub-mm) galaxies (SMGs) identified in four out of the five fields of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) – GAMA-9h, GAMA-12h, GAMA-15h, and NGP – with flux densities |$S_{250 \, \mu {\rm m}} \gt 30$| mJy at 250 μm. We show that galaxies selected at this wavelength trace the underlying matter distribution differently at low and high redshifts. We study the evolution of the clustering finding that at low redshifts sub-mm galaxies exhibit clustering strengths of r 0 ∼ 2–3 h −1 Mpc, below |$z$| < 0.3. At high redshifts, on the other hand, we find that sub-mm galaxies are more strongly clustered with correlation lengths r 0 = 8.1 ± 0.5, 8.8 ± 0.8, and 13.9 ± 3.9 h −1 Mpc at |$z$|  = 1–2, 2–3. and 3–5, respectively. We show that sub-mm galaxies across the redshift range 1 < |$z$| < 5, typically reside in dark-matter halos of mass of the order of |${\sim } 10^{12.5}\hbox{--}10^{13.0} \, h^{-1}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$| and are consistent with being the progenitors of local massive elliptical galaxies that we see in the local Universe. Most radiative transfer models assume that dust in spiral galaxies is distributed exponentially. In this paper our goal is to verify this assumption by analysing the two-dimensional large-scale distribution of dust in galaxies from the DustPedia sample. For this purpose, we have made use of Herschel imaging in five bands, from 100 to 500 μm, in which the cold dust constituent is primarily traced and makes up the bulk of the dust mass in spiral galaxies. For a subsample of 320 disc galaxies, we successfully performed a simultaneous fitting with a single Sérsic model of the Herschel images in all five bands using the multi-band modelling code GALFITM. We report that the Sérsic index n, which characterises the shape of the Sérsic profile, lies systematically below 1 in all Herschel bands and is almost constant with wavelength. The average value at 250 μm is 0.67 ± 0.37 (187 galaxies are fitted with n250 ≤ 0.75, 87 galaxies have 0.75 < n250 ≤ 1.25, and 46 – with n250 >  1.25). Most observed profiles exhibit a depletion in the inner region (at r <  0.3−0.4 of the optical radius r25) and are more or less exponential in the outer part. We also find breaks in the dust emission profiles at longer distances (0.5−0.6) r25 which are associated with the breaks in the optical and near-infrared. We assumed that the observed deficit of dust emission in the inner galaxy region is related to the depression in the radial profile of the HI surface density in the same region because the atomic gas reaches high enough surface densities there to be transformed into molecular gas. If a galaxy has a triggered star formation in the inner region (for example, because of a strong bar instability, which transfers the gas inwards to the centre, or a pseudobulge formation), no depletion or even an excess of dust emission in the centre is observed. We present infrared (IR) and submillimetre observations of the Crab-like supernova remnant (SNR) G54.1+0.3 including 350 $$\mu$$ m (SHARC-II), 870 $$\mu$$ m (LABOCA), 70, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500  $$\mu$$ m (Herschel), and 3–40  $$\mu$$ m (Spitzer). We detect dust features at 9, 11, and 21  $$\mu$$ m and a long-wavelength continuum dust component. The 21  $$\mu$$ m dust coincides with [Ar  ii ] ejecta emission, and the feature is remarkably similar to that in Cas A. The IRAC 8 $$\mu$$ m image including Ar ejecta is distributed in a shell-like morphology which is coincident with dust features, suggesting that dust has formed in the ejecta. We create a cold dust map that shows excess emission in the northwestern shell. We fit the spectral energy distribution of the SNR using the continuous distributions of ellipsoidal grain model of pre-solar grain SiO2 that reproduces the 21 and 9  $$\mu$$ m dust features and discuss grains of silicon carbide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that may be responsible for the 10–13  $$\mu$$ m dust features. To reproduce the long-wavelength continuum, we explore models consisting of different grains including Mg2SiO4, MgSiO3, Al2O3, FeS, carbon, and Fe3O4. We tested a model with a temperature-dependent silicate absorption coefficient. We detect cold dust (27–44 K) in the remnant, making this the fourth such SNR with freshly formed dust. The total dust mass in the SNR ranges from $$0.08\text{ to }0.9\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$$ depending on the grain composition, which is comparable to predicted masses from theoretical models. This paper forms part of the second major public data release of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). In this work, we describe the identification of optical and near-infrared counterparts to the submillimetre detected sources in the 177 deg2 North Galactic Plane (NGP) field. We used the likelihood ratio method to identify counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and in the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope Imaging Deep Sky Survey within a search radius of 10 arcsec of the H-ATLAS sources with a 4s detection at 250 µm. We obtained reliable (R ≥ 0.8) optical counterparts with r < 22.4 for 42 429 H-ATLAS sources (37.8 per cent), with an estimated completeness of 71.7 per cent and a false identification rate of 4.7 per cent. We also identified counterparts in the nearinfrared using deeper K-band data which covers a smaller ~25 deg2. We found reliable nearinfrared counterparts to 61.8 per cent of the 250-µm-selected sources within that area. We assessed the performance of the likelihood ratio method to identify optical and near-infrared counterparts taking into account the depth and area of both input catalogues. Using catalogues with the same surface density of objects in the overlapping ~25 deg² area, we obtained that the reliable fraction in the near-infrared (54.8 per cent) is significantly higher than in the optical (36.4 per cent). Finally, using deep radio data which covers a small region of the NGP field, we found that 80-90 per cent of our reliable identifications are correct. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the advent of wide-area submillimetre surveys, a large number of high-redshift gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies have been revealed. Because of the simplicity of the selection criteria for candidate lensed sources in such surveys, identified as those with S500 µm > 100 mJy, uncertainties associated with the modelling of the selection function are expunged. The combination of these attributes makes submillimetre surveys ideal for the study of strong lens statistics. We carried out a pilot study of the lensing statistics of submillimetreselected sources by making observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of a sample of strongly lensed sources selected from surveys carried out with the Herschel Space Observatory. We attempted to reproduce the distribution of image separations for the lensed sources using a halo mass function taken from a numerical simulation that contains both dark matter and baryons. We used three different density distributions, one based on analytical fits to the haloes formed in the EAGLE simulation and two density distributions [Singular Isothermal Sphere (SIS) and SISSA] that have been used before in lensing studies. We found that we could reproduce the observed distribution with all three density distributions, as long as we imposed an upper mass transition of ~1013M⊙ for the SIS and SISSA models, above which we assumed that the density distribution could be represented by a Navarro-Frenk-White profile. We show that we would need a sample of ~500 lensed sources to distinguish between the density distributions, which is practical given the predicted number of lensed sources in the Herschel surveys. Aims. The DustPedia project is capitalising on the legacy of the Herschel Space Observatory, using cutting-edge modelling techniques to study dust in the 875 DustPedia galaxies - representing the vast majority of extended galaxies within 3000 km s-1 that were observed by Herschel. This work requires a database of multiwavelength imagery and photometry that greatly exceeds the scope (in terms of wavelength coverage and number of galaxies) of any previous local-Universe survey. Methods. We constructed a database containing our own custom Herschel reductions, along with standardised archival observations from GALEX, SDSS, DSS, 2MASS, WISE, Spitzer, and Planck. Using these data, we performed consistent aperture-matched photometry, which we combined with external supplementary photometry from IRAS and Planck. Results. We present our multiwavelength imagery and photometry across 42 UV-microwave bands for the 875 DustPedia galaxies. Our aperture-matched photometry, combined with the external supplementary photometry, represents a total of 21 857 photometric measurements. A typical DustPedia galaxy has multiwavelength photometry spanning 25 bands. We also present the Comprehensive & Adaptable Aperture Photometry Routine (CAAPR), the pipeline we developed to carry out our aperture-matched photometry. CAAPR is designed to produce consistent photometry for the enormous range of galaxy and observation types in our data. In particular, CAAPR is able to determine robust cross-compatible uncertainties, thanks to a novel method for reliably extrapolating the aperture noise for observations that cover a very limited amount of background. We investigate the mean star formation rates (SFRs) in the host galaxies of ~3000 optically selected quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey within the Herschel-ATLAS fields, and a radio-luminous subsample covering the redshift range of z = 0.2-2.5. Using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and Herschel photometry (12-500 μm) we construct composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in bins of redshift and active galactic nucleus (AGN) luminosity. We perform SED fitting to measure the mean infrared luminosity due to star formation, removing the contamination from AGN emission. We find that the mean SFRs show a weak positive trend with increasing AGN luminosity. However, we demonstrate that the observed trend could be due to an increase in black hole (BH) mass (and a consequent increase of inferred stellar mass) with increasing AGN luminosity. We compare to a sample of X-ray selected AGN and find that the two populations have consistent mean SFRs when matched in AGN luminosity and redshift. On the basis of the available virial BH masses, and the evolving BH mass to stellar mass relationship, we find that the mean SFRs of our QSO sample are consistent with those of main sequence star-forming galaxies. Similarly the radio-luminous QSOs have mean SFRs that are consistent with both the overall QSO sample and with star-forming galaxies on the main sequence. In conclusion, on average QSOs reside on the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, and the observed positive trend between the mean SFRs and AGN luminosity can be attributed to BH mass and redshift dependencies. Combining large-area optical quasar surveys with the new far-infrared (FIR) Herschel-ATLAS Data Release 1, we search for an observational signature associated with the minority of quasars possessing bright FIR luminosities. We find that FIR-bright quasars show broad C IV emission-line blueshifts in excess of that expected from the optical luminosity alone, indicating particularly powerful nuclear outflows. The quasars show no signs of having redder optical colours than the general ensemble of optically selected quasars, ruling out differences in line-of-sight dustwithin the host galaxies. We postulate that these objectsmay be caught in a special evolutionary phase, with unobscured, high black hole accretion rates and correspondingly strong nuclear outflows. The high FIR emission found in these objects is then either a result of star formation related to the outflow, or is due to dust within the host galaxy illuminated by the quasar. We are thus directly witnessing coincident small-scale nuclear processes and galaxy-wide activity, commonly invoked in galaxy simulations that rely on feedback from quasars to influence galaxy evolution. Aims. The purpose of this work is the characterization of the radial distribution of dust, stars, gas, and star-formation rate (SFR) in a sub-sample of 18 face-on spiral galaxies extracted from the DustPedia sample. Methods. This study is performed by exploiting the multi-wavelength DustPedia database, from ultraviolet (UV) to sub-millimeter bands, in addition to molecular (12CO) and atomic (HI) gas maps and metallicity abundance information available in the literature. We fitted the surface-brightness profiles of the tracers of dust and stars, the mass surface-density profiles of dust, stars, molecular gas, and total gas, and the SFR surface-density profiles with an exponential curve and derived their scale-lengths. We also developed a method to solve for the CO-to-H2 conversion factor (αCO) per galaxy by using dust- and gas-mass profiles. Results. Although each galaxy has its own peculiar behavior, we identified a common trend of the exponential scale-lengths versus wavelength. On average, the scale-lengths normalized to the B-band 25 mag/arcsec2 radius decrease from UV to 70 μm, from 0.4 to 0.2, and then increase back up to ~0.3 at 500 microns. The main result is that, on average, the dust-mass surface-density scale-length is about 1.8 times the stellar one derived from IRAC data and the 3.6 μm surface brightness, and close to that in the UV. We found a mild dependence of the scale-lengths on the Hubble stage T: the scale-lengths of the Herschel bands and the 3.6 μm scale-length tend to increase from earlier to later types, the scale-length at 70 μm tends to be smaller than that at longer sub-mm wavelength with ratios between longer sub-mm wavelengths and 70 μm that decrease with increasing T. The scale-length ratio of SFR and stars shows a weak increasing trend towards later types. Our αCO determinations are in the range (0.3-9) M☉ pc-2 (K km s-1)-1, almost invariant by using a fixed dust-to-gas ratio mass (DGR) or a DGR depending on metallicity gradient. We use new Band 3 CO(1-0) observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the physical conditions in the interstellar gas of a sample of 27 dusty main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 0:03 < z < 0:2 present in the Valparaíso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). The sample is drawn from far-IR bright galaxies over ~160 deg2 in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), which is covered by high-quality ancillary data including Herschel [Cπ] 158 μm spectroscopy and far-infrared (FIR) photometry. The [Cπ] and CO(1-0) lines are both detected at >5σ in 26 sources. We find an average [Cπ] to CO(1-0) luminosity ratio of 3500 ± 1200 for our sample that is consistent with previous studies. Using the [Cπ], CO(1-0) and FIR measurements as diagnostics of the physical conditions of the interstellar medium, we compare these observations to the predictions of a photodissociation region (PDR) model to determine the gas density, surface temperature, pressure, and the strength of the incident far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation field, G0, normalised to the Habing Field. The majority of our sample exhibit hydrogen densities of 4 < log n=cm³ < 5:5 and experience an incident FUV radiation field with strengths of 2 < logG0 < 3 when adopting standard adjustments. A comparison to galaxy samples at different redshifts indicates that the average strength of the FUV radiation field appears constant up to redshift z ~ 6:4, yet the neutral gas density increases as a function of redshift by a factor of ~100 from z = 0 to z = 0:2 that persists regardless of various adjustments to our observable quantities. Whilst this evolution could provide an explanation for the observed evolution of the star formation rate density with cosmic time, the result most likely arises from a combination of observational biases when using different suites of emission lines as diagnostic tracers of PDR gas. We present a study of the dust, stars and atomic gas (HI) in an HI-selected sample of local galaxies (z < 0.035) in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey fields. This HI-selected sample reveals a population of very high gas fraction (>80 per cent), low stellar mass sources that appear to be in the earliest stages of their evolution. We compare this sample with dust- and stellar-mass-selected samples to study the dust and gas scaling relations over a wide range of gas fractions (proxy for evolutionary state of a galaxy). The most robust scaling relations for gas and dust are those linked to near-ultraviolet - r (specific star formation rate) and gas fraction; these do not depend on sample selection or environment. At the highest gas fractions, our additional sample shows that the dust content is well below expectations from extrapolating scaling relations for more evolved sources, and dust is not a good tracer of the gas content. The specific dust mass for local galaxies peaks at a gas fraction of ~75 per cent. The atomic gas depletion time is also longer for high gas fraction galaxies, opposite to the trend found for molecular gas depletion time-scale. We link this trend to the changing efficiency of conversion of HI to H2 as galaxies increase in stellar mass surface density during their evolution. Finally, we show that galaxies start out barely obscured and increase in obscuration as they evolve, yet there is no clear and simple link between obscuration and global galaxy properties. This paper is the second in a pair of papers presenting data release 1 (DR1) of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), the largest single open-time key project carried out with the Herschel Space Observatory. The H-ATLAS is a wide-area imaging survey carried out in five photometric bands at 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 µm covering a total area of 600 deg². In this paper, we describe the identification of optical counterparts to submillimetre sources in DR1, comprising an area of 161 deg² over three equatorial fields of roughly 12 × 4.5 deg centred at 9h, 12h and 14. h 5, respectively. Of all the H-ATLAS fields, the equatorial regions benefit from the greatest overlap with current multiwavelength surveys spanning ultraviolet (UV) to mid-infrared regimes, as well as extensive spectroscopic coverage. We use a likelihood ratio technique to identify Sloan Digital Sky Survey counterparts at r < 22.4 for 250-μm-selected sources detected at ≥4σ (28 mJy). We find 'reliable' counterparts (reliability R ≥ 0.8) for 44 835 sources (39 per cent), with an estimated completeness of 73.0 per cent and contamination rate of 4.7 per cent. Using redshifts and multi-wavelength photometry from GAMA and other public catalogues, we show that H-ATLAS-selected galaxies at z < 0.5 span a wide range of optical colours, total infrared (IR) luminosities and IR/UV ratios, with no strong disposition towards mid-IR-classified active galactic nuclei in comparison with optical selection. We combine dust, atomic (HI) and molecular (H2) hydrogen mass measurements for 176 galaxies in the Herschel Reference Survey to investigate the effect of environment on the gas-to-dust mass (Mgas/Mdust) ratio of nearby galaxies. We find that, at fixed stellar mass, the average Mgas/Mdust ratio varies by no more than a factor of ~2 when moving from field to cluster galaxies, with Virgo galaxies being slightly more dust rich (per unit of gas) than isolated systems. Remarkably, once the molecular and atomic hydrogen phases are investigated separately, we find that HI-deficient galaxies have at the same time lower MHI/Mdust ratio but higher MH2/Mdust ratio than HI-normal systems. In other words, they are poorer in atomic but richer in molecular hydrogen if normalized to their dust content. By comparing our findings with the predictions of theoretical models, we show that the opposite behaviour observed in the MHI/Mdust and MH2/Mdust ratios is fully consistent with outside-in stripping of the interstellar medium (ISM), and is simply a consequence of the different distribution of dust, HI and H2 across the disc. Our results demonstrate that the small environmental variations in the total Mgas/Mdust ratio, as well as in the gas-phase metallicity, do not automatically imply that environmental mechanisms are not able to affect the dust and metal content of the ISM in galaxies. Using results from the Herschel Astrophysical Terrahertz Large-Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) project, we show that, for galaxy masses above ≃ 108 M⊙, 51 percent of the stellar mass-density in the local Universe is in early-type galaxies (ETGs; Sérsic n > 2.5) while 89 percent of the rate of production of stellar mass-density is occurring in late-type galaxies (LTGs; Sérsic n < 2.5). From this zero-redshift benchmark, we have used a calorimetric technique to quantify the importance of the morphological transformation of galaxies over the history of the Universe. The extragalactic background radiation contains all the energy generated by nuclear fusion in stars since the big bang. By resolving this background radiation into individual galaxies using the deepest far-infrared survey with the Herschel Space Observatory and a deep near-infrared/optical survey with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and using measurements of the Sérsic index of these galaxies derived from the HST images, we estimate that ≃83 pecent of the stellar mass-density formed over the history of the Universe occurred in LTGs. The difference between this value and the fraction of the stellar mass-density that is in LTGs today implies there must have been a major transformation of LTGs into ETGs after the formation of most of the stars. We present the properties of the first 250 µm blind sample of nearby galaxies (15 < D < 46Mpc) containing 42 objects from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey. Herschel's sensitivity probes the faint end of the dust luminosity function for the first time, spanning a range of stellar mass (7.4 M* < 11.3 log < 10Mʘ), star formation activity (-11.8 < SSFR <-8.9 log10 10 yr-1), gas fraction (3-96 per cent), and colour (0.6 < FUV-KS < 7.0 mag). The median cold dust temperature is 14.6 K, colder than in the Herschel Reference Survey (18.5 K) and Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (17.7 K). The mean dust-to-stellar mass ratio in our sample is higher than these surveys by factors of 3.7 and 1.8, with a dust mass volume density of (3.7 ± 0.7) x 105 Mʘ Mpc-3. Counter-intuitively, we find that the more dust rich a galaxy, the lower its UV attenuation. Over half of our dust-selected sample are very blue in FUV-KS colour, with irregular and/or highly flocculent morphology; these galaxies account for only 6 per cent of the sample's stellar mass but contain over 35 per cent of the dust mass. They are the most actively star-forming galaxies in the sample, with the highest gas fractions and lowest UV attenuation. They also appear to be in an early stage of converting their gas into stars, providing valuable insights into the chemical evolution of young galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The Virgo direction has been observed at many wavelengths in recent years, in particular in the ultraviolet with GALEX. The far ultraviolet (FUV) diffuse light detected by GALEX offers interesting information on the large scale distribution of Galactic dust, owing to the GALEX FUV band sensitivity and resolution. Aims. We aim to characterise the ultraviolet large scale distribution of diffuse emission in the Virgo direction. A map of this emission may become useful for various studies by identifying regions where dust a ects observations by either scattering light or absorbing radiation. Methods. We constructed mosaics of the FUV and near ultraviolet (NUV) diffuse emission over a large sky region (RA 12 to 13 h, Dec 0 to 20 deg) surrounding the Virgo cluster, using all the GALEX available data in the area. We tested for the first time the utilisation of the FUV di use light as a Galactic extinction E(B - V) tracer. Results. The FUV diffuse light scattered on cirrus reveals details about their geometry. Despite large dispersion, the FUV diffeuse light correlates roughly with other Galactic dust tracers (coming from IRAS, Herschel, Planck), o ering an opportunity to use the FUV emission to locate them in future studies with a better resolution (about 5 arcsec native resolution, 20 arcsec pixels maps presented in this paper) than for several usual tracers. Estimating the Galactic dust extinction on the basis of this emission allows us to find a smaller dispersion in the NUV-i colour of background galaxies at a given E(B-V) than with other tracers. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic phenomena in the Universe; believed to result from the collapse and subsequent explosion of massive stars. Even though it has profound consequences for our understanding of their nature and selection biases, little is known about the dust properties of the galaxies hosting GRBs. We present analysis of the far-infrared properties of an unbiased sample of 20 BeppoSAX and Swift GRB host galaxies (at an average redshift of z = 3.1) located in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey, the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey, the Herschel Fornax Cluster Survey, the Herschel Stripe 82 Survey and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey, totalling 880 deg², or ~3 per cent of the sky in total. Our sample selection is serendipitous, based only on whether the X-ray position of a GRB lies within a large-scale Herschel survey - therefore our sample can be considered completely unbiased. Using deep data at wavelengths of 100-500 µm, we tentatively detected 1 out of 20 GRB hosts located in these fields. We constrain their dust masses and star formation rates (SFRs), and discuss these in the context of recent measurements of submillimetre galaxies and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The average far-infrared flux of our sample gives an upper limit on SFR of < 114 M8857; yr-1. The detection rate of GRB hosts is consistent with that predicted assuming that GRBs trace the cosmic SFR density in an unbiased way, i.e. that the fraction of GRB hosts with SFR > 500 M8857; yr-1 is consistent with the contribution of such luminous galaxies to the cosmic star formation density.
