Search

In this Roadmap, we present a vision for the future of submillimetre and millimetre astronomy in the United Kingdom over the next decade and beyond. This Roadmap has been developed in response to the recommendation of the Astronomy Advisory Panel (AAP) of the STFC in the AAP Astronomy Roadmap 2022. In order to develop our stragetic priorities and recommendations, we surveyed the UK submillimetre and millimetre community to determine their key priorities for both the near-term and long-term future of the field. We further performed detailed reviews of UK leadership in submillimetre/millimetre science and instrumentation. Our key strategic priorities are as follows: 1. The UK must be a key partner in the forthcoming AtLAST telescope, for which it is essential that the UK remains a key partner in the JCMT in the intermediate term. 2. The UK must maintain, and if possible enhance, access to ALMA and aim to lead parts of instrument development for ALMA2040. Our strategic priorities complement one another: AtLAST (a 50m single-dish telescope) and an upgraded ALMA (a large configurable interferometric array) would be in synergy, not competition, with one another. Both have identified and are working towards the same overarching science goals, and both are required in order to fully address these goals., Comment: 91 pages plus cover, 38 figures. We present MeerKAT Fornax Survey HI observations of NGC 1427A, a blue irregular galaxy with a stellar mass of 2e+9 Msun located near the centre of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Thanks to the excellent resolution (1 to 6 kpc spatially, 1.4 km/s in velocity) and HI column density sensitivity (4e+19/cm^2 to 1e+18/cm^2 depending on resolution), our data deliver new insights on the long-debated interaction of this galaxy with the cluster environment. We confirm the presence of a broad, one-sided, starless HI tail stretching from the outer regions of the stellar body and pointing away from the cluster centre. We find the tail to have 50% more HI (4e+8 Msun) and to be 3 times longer (70 kpc) than in previous observations. In fact, we detect scattered HI clouds out to 300 kpc from the galaxy in the direction of the tail -- possibly the most ancient remnant of the passage of NGC 1427A through the intracluster medium of Fornax. Both the velocity gradient along the HI tail and the peculiar kinematics of HI in the outer region of the stellar body are consistent with the effect of ram pressure given the line-of-sight motion of the galaxy within the cluster. However, several properties cannot be explained solely by ram pressure and suggest an ongoing tidal interaction. This includes: the close match between dense HI and stars within the disturbed stellar body; the abundant kinematically-anomalous HI; and the inversion of the HI velocity gradient near the base of the HI tail. We rule out an interaction with the cluster tidal field, and conclude that NGC 1427A is the result of a high-speed galaxy encounter or of a merger started at least 300 Myr ago, where ram pressure shapes the distribution and kinematics of the HI in the perturbed outer stellar body and in the tidal tails., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics, accepted. The MHONGOOSE (MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters) survey maps the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in and around 30 nearby star-forming spiral and dwarf galaxies to extremely low HI column densities. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} at the highest resolution of 7''. The HI mass sensitivity (3 sigma over 50 km/s) is ~5.5 X 10^5 M_sun at a distance of 10 Mpc (the median distance of the sample galaxies). The velocity resolution of the data is 1.4 km/s. One of the main science goals of the survey is the detection of cold, accreting gas in the outskirts of the sample galaxies. The sample was selected to cover a range in HI masses, from 10^7 M_sun to almost 10^{11} M_sun, to optimally sample possible accretion scenarios and environments. The distance to the sample galaxies ranges from 3 to 23 Mpc. In this paper, we present the sample selection, survey design, and observation and reduction procedures. We compare the integrated HI fluxes based on the MeerKAT data with those derived from single-dish measurement and find good agreement, indicating that our MeerKAT observations are recovering all flux. We present HI moment maps of the entire sample based on the first ten percent of the survey data, and find that a comparison of the zeroth- and second-moment values shows a clear separation between the physical properties of the HI in areas with star formation and areas without, related to the formation of a cold neutral medium. Finally, we give an overview of the HI-detected companion and satellite galaxies in the 30 fields, five of which have not previously been catalogued. In the framework of the IMEGIN Large Program, we used the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30-m telescope to observe the edge-on galaxy NGC 891 at 1.15 mm and 2 mm and at a FWHM of 11.1" and 17.6", respectively. Multiwavelength data enriched with the new NIKA2 observations fitted by the HerBIE SED code (coupled with the THEMIS dust model) were used to constrain the physical properties of the ISM. Emission originating from the diffuse dust disk is detected at all wavelengths from mid-IR to mm, while mid-IR observations reveal warm dust emission from compact HII regions. Indications of mm excess emission have also been found in the outer parts of the galactic disk. Furthermore, our SED fitting analysis constrained the mass fraction of the small (< 15 Angstrom) dust grains. We found that small grains constitute 9.5% of the total dust mass in the galactic plane, but this fraction increases up to ~ 20% at large distances (|z| > 3 kpc) from the galactic plane., Comment: To appear in Proc. of the mm Universe 2023 conference, Grenoble (France), June 2023, published by F. As the millimeter wavelength range remains a largely unexplored spectral region for galaxies, the IMEGIN large program aims to map the millimeter continuum emission of 22 nearby galaxies at 1.15 and 2 mm. Using the high-resolution maps produced by the NIKA2 camera, we explore the existence of very cold dust and take possible contamination by free-free and synchrotron emission into account. We study the IR-to-radio emission coming from different regions along the galactic plane and at large vertical distances. New observations of NGC 891, using the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30m telescope, along with a suite of observations at other wavelengths were used to perform a multiwavelength study of the spectral energy distribution in the interstellar medium in this galaxy. This analysis was performed globally and locally, using the advanced hierarchical Bayesian fitting code, HerBIE, coupled with the THEMIS dust model. Our dust modeling is able to reproduce the near-IR to millimeter emission of NGC 891, with the exception of an excess at a level of 25% obtained by the NIKA2 observations in the outermost parts of the disk. The radio continuum and thermal dust emission are distributed differently in the disk and galaxy halo. Different dusty environments are also revealed by a multiwavelength investigation of the emission features. Our detailed decomposition at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths shows that emission at 1 mm is purely originated by dust. Radio components become progressively important with increasing wavelengths. Finally, we find that emission arising from small dust grains accounts for ~ 9.5% of the total dust mass, reaching up to 20% at large galactic latitudes. We analyse the molecular and atomic emission lines of 71 bright Herschel-selected galaxies between redshifts 1.4 to 4.6 detected by the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array. These lines include a total of 156 CO, [C I], and H2O emission lines. For 46 galaxies, we detect two transitions of CO lines, and for these galaxies we find gas properties similar to those of other dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) samples. A comparison to photo-dissociation models suggests that most of Herschel-selected galaxies have similar interstellar medium conditions as local infrared-luminous galaxies and high-redshift DSFGs, although with denser gas and more intense far-ultraviolet radiation fields than normal star-forming galaxies. The line luminosities agree with the luminosity scaling relations across five orders of magnitude, although the star-formation and gas surface density distributions (i.e., Schmidt-Kennicutt relation) suggest a different star-formation phase in our galaxies (and other DSFGs) compared to local and low-redshift gas-rich, normal star-forming systems. The gas-to-dust ratios of these galaxies are similar to Milky Way values, with no apparent redshift evolution. Four of 46 sources appear to have CO line ratios in excess of the expected maximum (thermalized) profile, suggesting a rare phase in the evolution of DSFGs. Finally, we create a deep stacked spectrum over a wide rest-frame frequency (220-890 GHz) that reveals faint transitions from HCN and CH, in line with previous stacking experiments., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal. The MeerKAT Fornax Survey maps the distribution and kinematics of atomic neutral hydrogen gas (HI) in the nearby Fornax galaxy cluster using the MeerKAT telescope. The 12 deg^2 survey footprint covers the central region of the cluster out to ~ Rvir and stretches out to ~ 2 Rvir towards south west to include the NGC 1316 galaxy group. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 25 km/s) ranges from 5e+19/cm^2 at a resolution of ~ 10" (~ 1 kpc at the 20 Mpc distance of Fornax) down to ~ 1e+18/cm^2 at ~ 1' (~ 6 kpc), and slightly below this level at the lowest resolution of ~ 100" (~ 10 kpc). The HI mass sensitivity (3 sigma over 50 km/s) is 6e+5 Msun. The HI velocity resolution is 1.4 km/s. In this paper we describe the survey design and HI data processing, and we present a sample of six galaxies with long, one-sided, star-less HI tails (of which only one was previously known) radially oriented within the cluster and with measurable internal velocity gradients. We argue that the joint properties of the HI tails represent the first unambiguous evidence of ram pressure shaping the distribution of HI in the Fornax cluster. The disturbed optical morphology of all host galaxies supports the idea that the tails consist of HI initially pulled out of the galaxies' stellar body by tidal forces. Ram pressure was then able to further displace the weakly bound HI and give the tails their present direction, length and velocity gradient., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics, accepted. We present 101 and 151 GHz ALMA continuum images for 85 fields selected from Herschel observations that have 500 micron flux densities >80 mJy and 250-500 micron colours consistent with z > 2, most of which are expected to be gravitationally lensed or hyperluminous infrared galaxies. Approximately half of the Herschel 500 micron sources were resolved into multiple ALMA sources, but 11 of the 15 brightest 500 micron Herschel sources correspond to individual ALMA sources. For the 37 fields containing either a single source with a spectroscopic redshift or two sources with the same spectroscopic redshift, we examined the colour temperatures and dust emissivity indices. The colour temperatures only vary weakly with redshift and are statistically consistent with no redshift-dependent temperature variations, which generally corresponds to results from other samples selected in far-infrared, submillimetre, or millimetre bands but not to results from samples selected in optical or near-infrared bands. The dust emissivity indices, with very few exceptions, are largely consistent with a value of 2. We also compared spectroscopic redshifts to photometric redshifts based on spectral energy distribution templates designed for infrared-bright high-redshift galaxies. While the templates systematically underestimate the redshifts by ~15%, the inclusion of ALMA data decreases the scatter in the predicted redshifts by a factor of ~2, illustrating the potential usefulness of these millimetre data for estimating photometric redshifts., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We examine the far-IR properties of a sample of 5391 optically selected QSOs in the 0.544.7, using SPIRE data from Herschel-ATLAS. We split the sample in a grid of 74 luminosity-redshift bins and compute the average optical-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) in each bin. By normalising an intrinsic AGN template to the AGN optical power (at 5100A) we decompose the total infrared emission (L_IR; 8-1000um) into an AGN (L_IR,AGN) and star-forming component (L_IR,SF). We find that the AGN contribution to L_IR increases as a function of AGN power which manifests as a reduction of the `far-IR bump' in the average QSO SEDs. We note that L_IR,SF does not correlate with AGN power; the mean star formation rates (SFRs) of AGN host galaxies are a function of redshift only and they range from ~6 Msun/yr at z~0 to a plateau of <200 Msun/yr at z~2.6. Our results indicate that the accuracy of far-IR emission as a proxy for SFR decreases with increasing AGN luminosity. We show that, at any given redshift, observed trends between infrared luminosity (whether monochromatic or total) and AGN power (in the optical or X-rays) can be explained by a simple model which is the sum of two components: (A) the infrared emission from star-formation, uncorrelated with AGN power and (B) the infrared emission from AGN, directly proportional to AGN power in the optical or X-rays., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper we present the third data release (DR3) of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). We identify likely near-infrared counterparts to submillimetre sources in the South Galactic Pole (SGP) field using the VISTA VIKING survey. We search for the most probable counterparts within 15 arcsec of each Herschel source using a probability measure based on the ratio between the likelihood the true counterpart is found close to the submillimetre source and the likelihood that an unrelated object is found in the same location. For 110 374 (57.0$\%$) sources we find galaxies on the near-infrared images where the probability that the galaxy is associated to the source is greater than 0.8. We estimate the false identification rate to be 4.8$\%$, with a probability that the source has an associated counterpart on the VIKING images of 0.835$\pm$0.009. We investigate the effects of gravitational lensing and present 41 (0.14 deg$^{-2}$) candidate lensed systems with observed flux densities > 100 mJy at 500 $\mu$m. We include in the data release a probability that each source is gravitationally lensed and discover an additional 5 923 sources below 100 mJy that have a probability greater than 0.94 of being gravitationally lensed. We estimate that $\sim$ 400 - 1 000 sources have multiple true identifications in VIKING based on the similarity of redshift estimates for multiple counterparts close to a Herschel source. We present spectroscopic measurements for 71 galaxies associated with 62 of the brightest high-redshift submillimeter sources from the Southern fields of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), while targeting 85 sources which resolved into 142. We have obtained robust redshift measurements for all sources using the 12-m Array and an efficient tuning of ALMA to optimise its use as a redshift hunter, with 73 per cent of the sources having a robust redshift identification. Nine of these redshift identifications also rely on observations from the Atacama Compact Array. The spectroscopic redshifts span a range $1.41

We have carried out the first spatially-resolved investigation of the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) at high redshift, using the z=4.24 strongly-lensed sub-millimetre galaxy H-ATLASJ142413.9+022303 (ID141). We present high-resolution (down to ~350 pc) ALMA observations in dust continuum emission and in the CO(7-6), H_2O (2_{1,1} - 2_{0,2}), CI(1-0) and CI(2-1) lines, the latter two allowing us to spatially resolve the cool phase of the ISM for the first time. Our modelling of the kinematics reveals that the system appears to be dominated by a rotationally-supported gas disk with evidence of a nearby perturber. We find that the CI(1-0) line has a very different distribution to the other lines, showing the existence of a reservoir of cool gas that might have been missed in studies of other galaxies. We have estimated the mass of the ISM using four different tracers, always obtaining an estimate in the range (3.2-3.8) x 10^{11} M_sol, significantly higher than our dynamical mass estimate of (0.8-1.3) x 10^{11} M_sol. We suggest that this conflict and other similar conflicts reported in the literature is because the gas-to-tracer ratios are ~4 times lower than the Galactic values used to calibrate the ISM in high-redshift galaxies. We demonstrate that this could result from a top-heavy initial mass function and strong chemical evolution. Using a variety of quantitative indicators, we show that, extreme though it is at z=4.24, ID141 will likely join the population of quiescent galaxies that appears in the Universe at z~3., Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in MNRAS, published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society. 24 pages

New observations of the edge-on galaxy NGC 891, at 1.15 and 2 mm obtained with the IRAM 30-m telescope and the NIKA2 camera, within the framework of the IMEGIN (Interpreting the Millimetre Emission of Galaxies with IRAM and NIKA2) Large Program, are presented in this work. By using multiwavelength maps (from the mid-IR to the cm wavelengths) we perform SED fitting in order to extract the physical properties of the galaxy on both global and local ($\sim$kpc) scales. For the interpretation of the observations we make use of a state-of-the-art SED fitting code, HerBIE (HiERarchical Bayesian Inference for dust Emission). The observations indicate a galaxy morphology, at mm wavelengths, similar to that of the cold dust emission traced by sub-mm observations and to that of the molecular gas. The contribution of the radio emission at the NIKA2 bands is very small (negligible at 1.15 mm and $\sim10\%$ at 2 mm) while it dominates the total energy budget at longer wavelengths (beyond 5 mm). Over the past decade, studies of dust in the Andromeda galaxy (M31) have shown radial variations in the dust emissivity index ($\beta$). Understanding the astrophysical reasons behind these radial variations may give clues about the chemical composition of dust grains, their physical structure, and the evolution of dust. We use $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) observations taken by the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) and dust maps derived from \textit{Herschel} images, both with an angular resolution of 8" and spatial resolution of 30 pc, to study variations in $\beta$ across an area of $\approx$ 18.6 kpc$^2$ in M31. We extract sources, which we identify as molecular clouds, by applying the astrodendro algorithm to the $^{12}$CO and dust maps, which as a byproduct allows us to compare continuum emission from dust and CO emission as alternative ways of finding molecular clouds. We then use these catalogues to investigate whether there is evidence that $\beta$ is different inside and outside molecular clouds. Our results confirm the radial variations of $\beta$ seen in previous studies. However, we find little difference between the average $\beta$ inside molecular clouds compared to outside molecular clouds, in disagreement with models which predict an increase of $\beta$ in dense environments. Finally, we find some clouds traced by dust with very little CO which may be either clouds dominated by atomic gas or clouds of molecular gas that contain little CO., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Nearby Evolved Stars Survey (NESS) is a volume-complete sample of $\sim$850 Galactic evolved stars within 3\,kpc at (sub-)mm wavelengths, observed in the CO $J = $ (2$-$1) and (3$-$2) rotational lines, and the sub-mm continuum, using the James Clark Maxwell Telescope and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. NESS consists of five tiers, based on distances and dust-production rate (DPR). We define a new metric for estimating the distances to evolved stars and compare its results to \emph{Gaia} EDR3. Replicating other studies, the most-evolved, highly enshrouded objects in the Galactic Plane dominate the dust returned by our sources, and we initially estimate a total DPR of $4.7\times 10^{-5}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ from our sample. Our sub-mm fluxes are systematically higher and spectral indices are typically shallower than dust models typically predict. The 450/850 $\mu$m spectral indices are consistent with the blackbody Rayleigh--Jeans regime, suggesting a large fraction of evolved stars have unexpectedly large envelopes of cold dust., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publications in MNRAS

We present the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP). This project collates, curates, homogenises, and creates derived data products for most of the premium multi-wavelength extragalactic data sets. The sky boundaries for the first data release cover 1270 deg2 defined by the Herschel SPIRE extragalactic survey fields; notably the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) and the Herschel Atlas survey (H-ATLAS). Here, we describe the motivation and principal elements in the design of the project. Guiding principles are transparent or "open" methodologies with care for reproducibility and identification of provenance. A key element of the design focuses around the homogenisation of calibration, meta data and the provision of information required to define the selection of the data for statistical analysis. We apply probabilistic methods that extract information directly from the images at long wavelengths, exploiting the prior information available at shorter wavelengths and providing full posterior distributions rather than maximum likelihood estimates and associated uncertainties as in traditional catalogues. With this project definition paper we provide full access to the first data release of HELP; Data Release 1 (DR1), including a monolithic map of the largest SPIRE extragalactic field at 385 deg2 and 18 million measurements of PACS and SPIRE fluxes. We also provide tools to access and analyse the full HELP database. This new data set includes far-infrared photometry, photometric redshifts, and derived physical properties estimated from modelling the spectral energy distributions.

We use the PPMAP (Point Process MAPping) algorithm to re-analyse the \textit{Herschel} and SCUBA-2 observations of the L1688 and L1689 sub-regions of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. PPMAP delivers maps with high resolution (here $14''$, corresponding to $\sim 0.01\,{\rm pc}$ at $\sim 140\,{\rm pc}$), by using the observations at their native resolutions. PPMAP also delivers more accurate dust optical depths, by distinguishing dust of different types and at different temperatures. The filaments and prestellar cores almost all lie in regions with $N_{\rm H_2}\gtrsim 7\times 10^{21}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$ (corresponding to $A_{_{\rm V}}\gtrsim 7$). The dust temperature, $T$, tends to be correlated with the dust opacity index, $\beta$, with low $T$ and low $\beta$ tend concentrated in the interiors of filaments. The one exception to this tendency is a section of filament in L1688 that falls -- in projection -- between the two B stars, S1 and HD147889; here $T$ and $\beta$ are relatively high, and there is compelling evidence that feedback from these two stars has heated and compressed the filament. Filament {\sc fwhm}s are typically in the range $0.10\,{\rm pc}$ to $0.15\,{\rm pc}$. Most filaments have line densities in the range $25\,{\rm M_{_\odot}\,pc^{-1}}$ to $65\,{\rm M_{_\odot}\,pc^{-1}}$. If their only support is thermal gas pressure, and the gas is at the canonical temperature of $10\,{\rm K}$, the filaments are highly supercritical. However, there is some evidence from ammonia observations that the gas is significantly warmer than this, and we cannot rule out the possibility of additional support from turbulence and/or magnetic fields. On the basis of their spatial distribution, we argue that most of the starless cores are likely to disperse (rather than evolving to become prestellar)., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, Accepted for publication by MNRAS March 2021

We present the first interferometric blind HI survey of the Fornax galaxy cluster, which covers an area of 15 deg$^2$ out to the cluster $R_{vir}$. The survey has a resolution of 67''x95'' and 6.6 km$s^{-1}$ with a 3$\sigma$ sensitivity of N(HI)~2x10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ and MHI 2x10$^7$ M$_\odot$. We detect 16 galaxies out of 200 spectroscopically confirmed Fornax cluster members. The detections cover ~3 orders of magnitude in HI mass, from 8x10$^6$ to 1.5x10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$. They avoid the central, virialised region of the cluster both on the sky and in projected phase-space, showing that they are recent arrivals and that, in Fornax, HI is lost within a crossing time, ~2 Gyr. Half of these galaxies exhibit a disturbed HI morphology, including several cases of asymmetries, tails, offsets between HI and optical centres, and a case of a truncated HI disc suggesting that they have been interacting within or on their way to Fornax. Our HI detections are HI-poorer and form stars at a lower rate than non-cluster galaxies in the same $M_\star$ range. Low mass galaxies are more strongly affected throughout their infall towards the cluster. The MHI/$M_\star$ ratio of Fornax galaxies is comparable to that in the Virgo cluster. At fixed $M_\star$, our HI detections follow the non-cluster relation between MHI and the star formation rate, and we argue that this implies that so far they have lost their HI on a timescale $\gtrsim$1-2 Gyr. Deeper inside the cluster HI removal is likely to proceed faster, as confirmed by a population of HI-undetected but H$_2$-detected star-forming galaxies. Based on ALMA data, we find a large scatter in H$_2$-to-HI mass ratio, with several galaxies showing an unusually high ratio that is probably caused by faster HI removal. We identify an HI-rich subgroup of possible interacting galaxies dominated by NGC 1365, where pre-processing is likey to have taken place.

The Mexico-UK Submillimetre Camera for AsTronomy (MUSCAT) is a 1.1 mm receiver consisting of 1,500 lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) for the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT; Volc\'an Sierra Negra in Puebla, M\'exico). MUSCAT utilises the maximum field of view of the LMT's upgraded 50-metre primary mirror and is the first M\'exico-UK collaboration to deploy a millimetre/sub-mm receiver on the Large Millimeter Telescope. Using a simplistic simulator, we estimate a predicted mapping speed for MUSCAT by combining the measured performance of MUSCAT with the observed sky conditions at the LMT. We compare this to a previously calculated bolometric-model mapping speed and find that our mapping speed is in good agreement when this is scaled by a previously reported empirical factor. Through this simulation we show that signal contamination due to sky fluctuations can be effectively removed through the use of principle component analysis. We also give an overview of the instrument design and explain how this design allows for MUSCAT to be upgraded and act as an on-sky demonstration testbed for novel technologies after the facility-class TolTEC receiver comes online., Comment: Presented at SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 2020

The Mexico-UK Submillimetre Camera for Astronomy (MUSCAT) is the second-generation large-format continuum camera operating in the 1.1 mm band to be installed on the 50-m diameter Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in Mexico. The focal plane of the instrument is made up of 1458 horn coupled lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKID) divided equally into six channels deposited on three silicon wafers. Here we present the preliminary results of the complete characterisation in the laboratory of the MUSCAT focal plane. Through the instrument's readout system, we perform frequency sweeps of the array to identify the resonance frequencies, and continuous timestream acquisitions to measure and characterise the intrinsic noise and 1/f knee of the detectors. Subsequently, with a re-imaging lens and a black body point source, the beams of every detector are mapped, obtaining a mean FWHM size of $\sim$3.27 mm, close to the expected 3.1 mm. Then, by varying the intensity of a beam filling black body source, we measure the responsivity and noise power spectral density (PSD) for each detector under an optical load of 300 K, obtaining the noise equivalent power (NEP), with which we verify that the majority of the detectors are photon noise limited. Finally, using a Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS), we measure the spectral response of the instrument, which indicate a bandwidth of 1.0--1.2 mm centred on 1.1 mm, as expected., Comment: Presented at SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 2020

We have used the ratio of column densities (CDR) derived independently from the 850-$\mu$m continuum JCMT Plane Survey (JPS) and the $^{13}$CO/C$^{18}$O $(J=3-2)$ Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey (CHIMPS) to produce maps of the dense-gas mass fraction (DGMF) in two slices of the Galactic Plane centred at $\ell$=30$^{\circ}$ and $\ell$=40$^{\circ}$. The observed DGMF is a metric for the instantaneous clump-formation efficiency (CFE) in the molecular gas. We split the two fields into velocity components corresponding to the spiral arms that cross them, and a two-dimensional power-spectrum analysis of the spiral arm DGMF maps reveals a break in slope at the approximate size scale of molecular clouds. We interpret this as the characteristic scale of the amplitude of variations in the CFE and a constraint on the dominant mechanism regulating the CFE and, hence, the star-formation efficiency in CO-traced clouds., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables. Using the EMIR instrument on the IRAM 30m telescope, we conducted a spectroscopic redshift search of seven z$_{\rm phot}$ $\sim$ 4 sub-millimetre bright galaxies selected from the Herschel Bright Sources (HerBS) sample with fluxes at 500 $\mu$m greater than 80 mJy. For four sources, we obtained spectroscopic redshifts between 3.4 < z < 4.1 through the detection of multiple CO-spectral lines with J $\leq$ 3. Later, we detected low-J transitions for two of these sources with the GBT including the CO(1-0) transition. For the remaining three sources, more data are needed to determine the spectroscopic redshift unambiguously. The measured CO luminosities and line widths suggest that all these sources are gravitationally lensed. These observations demonstrate that the 2 mm window is indispensable to confirm robust spectroscopic redshifts for z < 4 sources. Scaling laws of dust, HI gas and metal mass with stellar mass, specific star formation rate and metallicity are crucial to our understanding of the buildup of galaxies through their enrichment with metals and dust. In this work, we analyse how the dust and metal content varies with specific gas mass ($M_{\text{HI}}$/$M_{\star}$) across a diverse sample of 423 nearby galaxies. The observed trends are interpreted with a set of Dust and Element evolUtion modelS (DEUS) - incluidng stellar dust production, grain growth, and dust destruction - within a Bayesian framework to enable a rigorous search of the multi-dimensional parameter space. We find that these scaling laws for galaxies with $-1.0\lesssim \log M_{\text{HI}}$/$M_{\star}\lesssim0$ can be reproduced using closed-box models with high fractions (37-89$\%$) of supernova dust surviving a reverse shock, relatively low grain growth efficiencies ($\epsilon$=30-40), and long dus lifetimes (1-2\,Gyr). The models have present-day dust masses with similar contributions from stellar sources (50-80\,$\%$) and grain growth (20-50\,$\%$). Over the entire lifetime of these galaxies, the contribution from stardust ($>$90\,$\%$) outweighs the fraction of dust grown in the interstellar medium ($<$10$\%$). Our results provide an alternative for the chemical evolution models that require extremely low supernova dust production efficiencies and short grain growth timescales to reproduce local scaling laws, and could help solving the conundrum on whether or not grains can grow efficiently in the interstellar medium., Comment: 56 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the evolution of the gas mass fraction for galaxies in the COSMOS field using submillimetre emission from dust at 850$\mu$m. We use stacking methodologies on the 850$\mu$m S2COSMOS map to derive the gas mass fraction of galaxies out to high redshifts, 0 <= $z$ <= 5, for galaxies with stellar masses of $10^{9.5} < M_* (\rm M_{\odot}) < 10^{11.75}$. In comparison to previous literature studies we extend to higher redshifts, include more normal star-forming galaxies (on the main sequence), and also investigate the evolution of the gas mass fraction split by star-forming and passive galaxy populations. We find our stacking results broadly agree with scaling relations in the literature. We find tentative evidence for a peak in the gas mass fraction of galaxies at around $z$ ~ 2.5-3, just before the peak of the star formation history of the Universe. We find that passive galaxies are particularly devoid of gas, compared to the star-forming population. The Herschel-ATLAS unbiased survey of cold dust in the local Universe is dominated by a surprising population of very blue (FUV-K < 3.5), dust-rich galaxies with high gas fractions (f_HI = M_HI/(M*+M_HI)>0.5)). Dubbed `Blue and Dusty Gas Rich Sources' (BADGRS) they have cold diffuse dust temperatures, and the highest dust-to-stellar mass ratios of any galaxies in the local Universe. Here, we explore the molecular ISM in a representative sample of BADGRS, using very deep CO(J_up=1,2,3) observations across the central and outer disk regions. We find very low CO brightnesses (Tp=15-30 mK), despite the bright far-infrared emission and metallicities in the range 0.5

We have analysed the Herschel and SCUBA-2 dust continuum observations of the main filament in the Taurus L1495 star forming region, using the Bayesian fitting procedure PPMAP. (i) If we construct an average profile along the whole length of the filament, it has fwhm $\simeq 0.087\pm 0.003\,{\rm pc};\;$, but the closeness to previous estimates is coincidental. (ii) If we analyse small local sections of the filament, the column-density profile approximates well to the form predicted for hydrostatic equilibrium of an isothermal cylinder. (iii) The ability of PPMAP to distinguish dust emitting at different temperatures, and thereby to discriminate between the warm outer layers of the filament and the cold inner layers near the spine, leads to a significant reduction in the surface-density, $\varSigma$, and hence in the line-density, $\mu$. If we adopt the canonical value for the critical line-density at a gas-kinetic temperature of $10\,{\rm K}$, $\mu_{_{\rm CRIT}}\simeq 16\,{\rm M_{_\odot}\,pc^{-1}}$, the filament is on average trans-critical, with ${\bar\mu}\sim \mu_{_{\rm CRIT}};\;$ local sections where $\mu >\mu_{_{\rm CRIT}}$ tend to lie close to pre-stellar cores. (iv) The ability of PPMAP to distinguish different types of dust, i.e. dust characterised by different values of the emissivity index, $\beta$, reveals that the dust in the filament has a lower emissivity index, $\beta\leq1.5$, than the dust outside the filament, $\beta\geq 1.7$, implying that the physical conditions in the filament have effected a change in the properties of the dust., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication by MNRAS August 2019

We use a sub-set of the DustPedia galaxy sample (461 galaxies) to investigate the effect the environment has had on galaxies. We consider Virgo cluster and field samples and also assign a density contrast parameter to each galaxy, as defined by the local density of SDSS galaxies. We consider their chemical evolution (using M_{Dust}/M_{Baryon} and M_{Gas}/M_{Baryon}), their specific star formation rate (SFR/M_{Stars}), star formation efficiency (SFR/M_{Gas}), stars-to-dust mass ratio (M_{Stars}/M_{Dust}), gas-to-dust mass ratio (M_{Gas}/M_{Dust}) and the relationship between star formation rate per unit mass of dust and dust temperature (SFR/M_{Dust} and T_{Dust}). Late type galaxies (later than Sc) in all of the environments can be modelled using simple closed box chemical evolution and a simple star formation history (SFR(t) \propto t\exp{-t/\tau}). For earlier type galaxies the physical mechanisms that give rise to their properties are clearly much more varied and require a more complicated model (mergers, gas in or outflow). However, we find little or no difference in the properties of galaxies of the same morphological type within the cluster, field or with different density contrasts. It appears that it is morphology, how and whenever this is laid down, and consistent internal physical processes that primarily determine the derived properties of galaxies in the DustPedia sample and not processes related to differences in the local environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Most radiative transfer models assume that dust in spiral galaxies is distributed exponentially. In this paper our goal is to verify this assumption by analysing the two-dimensional large-scale distribution of dust in galaxies from the DustPedia sample. For this purpose, we make use of Herschel imaging in five bands, from 100 to 500{\mu}m, in which the cold dust constituent is primarily traced and makes up the bulk of the dust mass in spiral galaxies. For a subsample of 320 disc galaxies, we successfully perform a simultaneous fitting with a single S\'ersic model of the Herschel images in all five bands using the multiband modelling code GALFITM. We report that the S\'ersic index $n$, which characterises the shape of the S\'ersic profile, lies systematically below 1 in all Herschel bands and is almost constant with wavelength. The average value at 250{\mu}m is $0.67\pm0.37$ (187 galaxies are fitted with $n_{250}\leq0.75$, 87 galaxies have $0.751.25$). Most observed profiles exhibit a depletion in the inner region (at $r<0.3-0.4$ of the optical radius $r_{25}$ ) and are more or less exponential in the outer part. We also find breaks in the dust emission profiles at longer distances $(0.5-0.6)r_{25}$ which are associated with the breaks in the optical and near-infrared. We assume that the observed deficit of dust emission in the inner galaxy region is related to the depression in the radial profile of the HI surface density in the same region because the atomic gas reaches high enough surface densities there to be transformed into molecular gas. If a galaxy has a triggered star formation in the inner region (for example, because of a strong bar instability, which transfers the gas inwards to the centre, or a pseudobulge formation), no depletion or even an excess of dust emission in the centre is observed., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present measurements of the angular correlation function of sub-millimeter (sub-mm) galaxies (SMGs) identified in four out of the five fields of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) - GAMA-9h, GAMA-12h, GAMA-15h and NGP - with flux densities $S_{250\mu m}$>30 mJy at 250 {\mu}m. We show that galaxies selected at this wavelength trace the underlying matter distribution differently at low and high redshifts. We study the evolution of the clustering finding that at low redshifts sub-mm galaxies exhibit clustering strengths of $r_0$ $\sim$ 2 - 3 $h^{-1}$ Mpc, below z < 0.3. At high redshifts, on the other hand, we find that sub-mm galaxies are more strongly clustered with correlation lengths $r_0$ = 8.1 $\pm$ 0.5, 8.8 $\pm$ 0.8 and 13.9 $\pm$ 3.9 $h^{-1}$Mpc at z = 1 - 2, 2 - 3 and 3 - 5, respectively. We show that sub-mm galaxies across the redshift range 1 < z < 5, typically reside in dark-matter halos of mass of the order of ~ $10^{12.5}$ - $10^{13.0}$ $h^{-1} \, M_{\odot}$ and are consistent with being the progenitors of local massive elliptical galaxies that we see in the local Universe., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. We present new Herschel-derived images of warm dust in the Andromeda Galaxy, M31, with unprecedented spatial resolution (~ 30 pc), column density accuracy, and constraints on the three-dimensional distributions of dust temperature and dust opacity index (hence grain size and composition), based on the new PPMAP Bayesian analysis procedure. We confirm the overall radial variation of dust opacity index reported by other recent studies, including the central decrease within ~ 3 kpc of the nucleus. We also investigate the detailed distribution of dust in the nuclear region, a prominent feature of which is a ~ 500 pc bar-like structure seen previously in H{\alpha}. The nature of this feature has been the subject of some debate. Our maps show it to be the site of the warmest dust, with a mean line-of-sight temperature ~ 30 K. A comparison with the stellar distribution, based on 2MASS data, provides strong evidence that it is a gravitationally induced bar. A comparison with radial velocity maps suggests the presence of an inflow towards the nucleus from opposite directions along this bar, fed presumably by the nuclear spiral with which it appears to connect. Such behaviour is common in large-scale bars in spiral galaxies, as is the phenomenon of nested bars whereby a subkiloparsec nuclear bar exists within a large-scale primary bar. With the advent of wide-area submillimeter surveys, a large number of high-redshift gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) has been revealed. Due to the simplicity of the selection criteria for candidate lensed sources in such surveys, identified as those with $S_{500\mu m} > 100$ mJy, uncertainties associated with the modelling of the selection function are expunged. The combination of these attributes makes submillimeter surveys ideal for the study of strong lens statistics. We carried out a pilot study of the lensing statistics of submillimetre-selected sources by making observations with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) of a sample of strongly-lensed sources selected from surveys carried out with the Herschel Space Observatory. We attempted to reproduce the distribution of image separations for the lensed sources using a halo mass function taken from a numerical simulation which contains both dark matter and baryons. We used three different density distributions, one based on analytical fits to the halos formed in the EAGLE simulation and two density distributions (Singular Isothermal Sphere (SIS) and SISSA) that have been used before in lensing studies. We found that we could reproduce the observed distribution with all three density distributions, as long as we imposed an upper mass transition of $\sim$$10^{13} M_{\odot}$ for the SIS and SISSA models, above which we assumed that the density distribution could be represented by an NFW profile. We show that we would need a sample of $\sim$500 lensed sources to distinguish between the density distributions, which is practical given the predicted number of lensed sources in the Herschel surveys., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The {\it Herschel} Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) is a survey of 660 deg$^2$ with the PACS and SPIRE cameras in five photometric bands: 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500\mic. This is the second of three papers describing the data release for the large fields at the south and north Galactic poles (NGP and SGP). In this paper we describe the catalogues of far-infrared and submillimetre sources for the NGP and SGP, which cover 177 deg$^2$ and 303 deg$^2$, respectively. The catalogues contain 153,367 sources for the NGP field and 193,527 sources for the SGP field detected at more than 4$\sigma$ significance in any of the 250, 350 or 500\mic\ bands. The source detection is based on the 250\mic\ map, and we present photometry in all five bands for each source, including aperture photometry for sources known to be extended. The rms positional accuracy for the faintest sources is about 2.4 arc seconds in both right ascension and declination. We present a statistical analysis of the catalogues and discuss the practical issues -- completeness, reliability, flux boosting, accuracy of positions, accuracy of flux measurements -- necessary to use the catalogues for astronomical projects.

We present the dust mass function (DMF) of 15,750 galaxies with redshift $z< 0.1$, drawn from the overlapping area of the GAMA and {\it H-}ATLAS surveys. The DMF is derived using the density corrected $V_{\rm max}$ method, where we estimate $V_{\rm max}$ using: (i) the normal photometric selection limit ($pV_{\rm max}$) and (ii) a bivariate brightness distribution (BBD) technique, which accounts for two selection effects. We fit the data with a Schechter function, and find $M^{*}=(4.65\pm0.18)\times 10^{7}\,h^2_{70}\, M_{\odot}$, $\alpha=(1.22\pm 0.01)$, $\phi^{*}=(6.26\pm 0.28)\times 10^{-3}\,h^3_{70}\,\rm Mpc^{-3}\,dex^{-1}$. The resulting dust mass density parameter integrated down to $10^4\,M_{\odot}$ is $\Omega_{\rm d}=(1.11 \pm0.02)\times 10^{-6}$ which implies the mass fraction of baryons in dust is $f_{m_b}=(2.40\pm0.04)\times 10^{-5}$; cosmic variance adds an extra 7-17\,per\,cent uncertainty to the quoted statistical errors. Our measurements have fewer galaxies with high dust mass than predicted by semi-analytic models. This is because the models include too much dust in high stellar mass galaxies. Conversely, our measurements find more galaxies with high dust mass than predicted by hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. This is likely to be from the long timescales for grain growth assumed in the models. We calculate DMFs split by galaxy type and find dust mass densities of $\Omega_{\rm d}=(0.88\pm0.03)\times 10^{-6}$ and $\Omega_{\rm d}=(0.060\pm0.005)\times 10^{-6}$ for late-types and early-types respectively. Comparing to the equivalent galaxy stellar mass functions (GSMF) we find that the DMF for late-types is well matched by the GMSF scaled by $(8.07\pm0.35) \times 10^{-4}$., Comment: 25 Pages, 18 Figures. MHONGOOSE is a deep survey of the neutral hydrogen distribution in a representative sample of 30 nearby disk and dwarf galaxies with HI masses from 10^6 to ~10^{11} M_sun, and luminosities from M_R ~ -12 to M_R ~ -22. The sample is selected to uniformly cover the available range in log(M_HI). Our extremely deep observations, down to HI column density limits of well below 10^{18} cm^{-2} - or a few hundred times fainter than the typical HI disks in galaxies - will directly detect the effects of cold accretion from the intergalactic medium and the links with the cosmic web. These observations will be the first ever to probe the very low-column density neutral gas in galaxies at these high resolutions. Combination with data at other wavelengths, most of it already available, will enable accurate modelling of the properties and evolution of the mass components in these galaxies and link these with the effects of environment, dark matter distribution, and other fundamental properties such as halo mass and angular momentum. MHONGOOSE can already start addressing some of the SKA-1 science goals and will provide a comprehensive inventory of the processes driving the transformation and evolution of galaxies in the nearby universe at high resolution and over 5 orders of magnitude in column density. We present the Herschel Bright Sources (HerBS) sample, a sample of bright, high-redshift Herschel sources detected in the 616.4 square degree H-ATLAS survey. The HerBS sample contains 209 galaxies, selected with a 500 {\mu}m flux density greater than 80 mJy and an estimated redshift greater than 2. The sample consists of a combination of HyLIRGs and lensed ULIRGs during the epoch of peak cosmic star formation. In this paper, we present SCUBA-2 observations at 850 ${\mu}$m of 189 galaxies of the HerBS sample, 152 of these sources were detected. We fit a spectral template to the Herschel-SPIRE and 850 ${\mu}$m SCUBA-2 flux densities of 22 sources with spectroscopically determined redshifts, using a two-component modified blackbody spectrum as a template. We find a cold- and hot-dust temperature of 21.29 K and 45.80 K, a cold-to-hot dust mass ratio of 26.62 and a $\beta$ of 1.83. The poor quality of the fit suggests that the sample of galaxies is too diverse to be explained by our simple model. Comparison of our sample to a galaxy evolution model indicates that the fraction of lenses is high. Out of the 152 SCUBA-2 detected galaxies, the model predicts 128.4 $\pm$ 2.1 of those galaxies to be lensed (84.5%). The SPIRE 500 ${\mu}$m flux suggests that out of all 209 HerBS sources, we expect 158.1 $\pm$ 1.7 lensed sources, giving a total lensing fraction of 76 per cent.

We present the science case and observations plan of the MeerKAT Fornax Survey, an HI and radio continuum survey of the Fornax galaxy cluster to be carried out with the SKA precursor MeerKAT. Fornax is the second most massive cluster within 20 Mpc and the largest nearby cluster in the southern hemisphere. Its low X-ray luminosity makes it representative of the environment where most galaxies live and where substantial galaxy evolution takes place. Fornax's ongoing growth makes it an excellent laboratory for studying the assembly of clusters, the physics of gas accretion and stripping in galaxies falling in the cluster, and the connection between these processes and the neutral medium in the cosmic web. We will observe a region of 12 deg$^2$ reaching a projected distance of 1.5 Mpc from the cluster centre. This will cover a wide range of environment density out to the outskirts of the cluster, where gas-rich in-falling groups are found. We will: study the HI morphology of resolved galaxies down to a column density of a few times 1e+19 cm$^{-2}$ at a resolution of 1 kpc; measure the slope of the HI mass function down to M(HI) 5e+5 M(sun); and attempt to detect HI in the cosmic web reaching a column density of 1e+18 cm$^{-2}$ at a resolution of 10 kpc., Comment: Proceedings of Science, "MeerKAT Science: On the Pathway to the SKA", Stellenbosch, 25-27 May 2016

The DustPedia project is capitalising on the legacy of the Herschel Space Observatory, using cutting-edge modelling techniques to study dust in the 875 DustPedia galaxies - representing the vast majority of extended galaxies within 3000 km s$^{-1}$ that were observed by Herschel. This work requires a database of multiwavelength imagery and photometry that greatly exceeds the scope (in terms of wavelength coverage and number of galaxies) of any previous local-Universe survey. We constructed a database containing our own custom Herschel reductions, along with standardised archival observations from GALEX, SDSS, DSS, 2MASS, WISE, Spitzer, and Planck. Using these data, we performed consistent aperture-matched photometry, which we combined with external supplementary photometry from IRAS and Planck. We present our multiwavelength imagery and photometry across 42 UV-microwave bands for the 875 DustPedia galaxies. Our aperture-matched photometry, combined with the external supplementary photometry, represents a total of 21,857 photometric measurements. A typical DustPedia galaxy has multiwavelength photometry spanning 25 bands. We also present the Comprehensive & Adaptable Aperture Photometry Routine (CAAPR), the pipeline we developed to carry out our aperture-matched photometry. CAAPR is designed to produce consistent photometry for the enormous range of galaxy and observation types in our data. In particular, CAAPR is able to determine robust cross-compatible uncertainties, thanks to a novel method for reliably extrapolating the aperture noise for observations that cover a very limited amount of background. We present infrared (IR) and submillimeter observations of the Crab-like supernova remnant (SNR) G54.1+0.3 including 350 micron (SHARC-II), 870 micron (LABOCA), 70, 100, 160, 250, 350, 500 micron (Herschel) and 3-40 micron (Spitzer). We detect dust features at 9, 11 and 21 micron and a long wavelength continuum dust component. The 21 micron dust coincides with [Ar II] ejecta emission, and the feature is remarkably similar to that in Cas A. The IRAC 8 micron image including Ar ejecta is distributed in a shell-like morphology which is coincident with dust features, suggesting that dust has formed in the ejecta. We create a cold dust map that shows excess emission in the northwestern shell. We fit the spectral energy distribution of the SNR using the continuous distributions of ellipsoidal (CDE) grain model of pre-solar grain SiO2 that reproduces the 21 and 9 micron dust features and discuss grains of SiC and PAH that may be responsible for the 10-13 micron dust features. To reproduce the long-wavelength continuum, we explore models consisting of different grains including Mg2SiO4, MgSiO3, Al2O3, FeS, carbon, and Fe3O4. We tested a model with a temperature-dependent silicate absorption coefficient. We detect cold dust (27-44 K) in the remnant, making this the fourth such SNR with freshly-formed dust. The total dust mass in the SNR ranges from 0.08-0.9 Msun depending on the grain composition, which is comparable to predicted masses from theoretical models. We investigate the mean star formation rates (SFRs) in the host galaxies of ~3000 optically selected QSOs from the SDSS survey within the Herschel-ATLAS fields, and a radio-luminous sub-sample, covering the redshift range of z = 0.2-2.5. Using WISE & Herschel photometry (12 - 500{\mu}m) we construct composite SEDs in bins of redshift and AGN luminosity. We perform SED fitting to measure the mean infrared luminosity due to star formation, removing the contamination from AGN emission. We find that the mean SFRs show a weak positive trend with increasing AGN luminosity. However, we demonstrate that the observed trend could be due to an increase in black hole (BH) mass (and a consequent increase of inferred stellar mass) with increasing AGN luminosity. We compare to a sample of X-ray selected AGN and find that the two populations have consistent mean SFRs when matched in AGN luminosity and redshift. On the basis of the available virial BH masses, and the evolving BH mass to stellar mass relationship, we find that the mean SFRs of our QSO sample are consistent with those of main sequence star-forming galaxies. Similarly, the radio-luminous QSOs have mean SFRs that are consistent with both the overall QSO sample and with star-forming galaxies on the main sequence. In this work we measure and study the cross-correlation signal between a foreground sample of GAMA galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range $0.2

The purpose of this work is the characterization of the radial distribution of dust, stars, gas, and star-formation rate (SFR) in a sub-sample of 18 face-on spiral galaxies extracted from the DustPedia sample. This study is performed by exploiting the multi-wavelength, from UV to sub-mm bands, DustPedia database, in addition to molecular (12CO) and atomic (HI) gas maps and metallicity abundance information available in the literature. We fitted the surface brightness profiles of the tracers of dust and stars, the mass surface density profiles of dust, stars, molecular gas, and total gas, and the SFR surface density profiles with an exponential curve and derived their scale-lengths. We also developed a method to solve for the CO-to-H2 conversion factor (alpha_CO) per galaxy by using dust and gas mass profiles. Although each galaxy has its own peculiar behaviour, we identified a common trend of the exponential scale-lengths vs. wavelength. On average, the scale-lengths normalized to the B-band 25 mag/arcsec^2 radius decrease from UV to 70 micron, from 0.4 to 0.2, and then increase back up to 0.3 at 500 microns. The main result is that, on average, the dust mass surface density scale-length is about 1.8 times the stellar one derived from IRAC data and the 3.6 micron surface brightness, and close to that in the UV. We found a mild dependence of the scale-lengths on the Hubble stage T: the scale-lengths of the Herschel bands and the 3.6 micron scale-length tend to increase from earlier to later types, the scale-length at 70 micron tends to be smaller than that at longer sub-mm wavelength with ratios between longer sub-mm wavelengths and 70 micron that decrease with increasing T. Combining large-area optical quasar surveys with the new far-infrared Herschel-ATLAS Data Release 1, we search for an observational signature associated with the minority of quasars possessing bright far-infrared (FIR) luminosities. We find that FIR-bright quasars show broad CIV emission line blueshifts in excess of that expected from the optical luminosity alone, indicating particularly powerful nuclear outflows. The quasars show no signs of having redder optical colours than the general ensemble of optically-selected quasars, ruling out differences in line-of-sight dust within the host galaxies. We postulate that these objects may be caught in a special evolutionary phase, with unobscured, high black hole accretion rates and correspondingly strong nuclear outflows. The high FIR emission found in these objects is then either a result of star formation related to the outflow, or is due to dust within the host galaxy illuminated by the quasar. We are thus directly witnessing coincident small-scale nuclear processes and galaxy-wide activity, commonly invoked in galaxy simulations which rely on feedback from quasars to influence galaxy evolution., Comment: Comments: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an extragalactic survey using observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to characterise galaxy populations up to $z=0.35$: the Valpara\'iso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). We use ALMA Band-3 CO(1--0) observations to study the molecular gas content in a sample of 67 dusty normal star-forming galaxies selected from the $Herschel$ Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey ($H$-ATLAS). We have spectrally detected 49 galaxies at $>5\sigma$ significance and 12 others are seen at low significance in stacked spectra. CO luminosities are in the range of $(0.03-1.31)\times10^{10}$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$, equivalent to $\log({\rm M_{gas}/M_{\odot}}) =8.9-10.9$ assuming an $\alpha_{\rm CO}$=4.6(K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$)$^{-1}$, which perfectly complements the parameter space previously explored with local and high-z normal galaxies. We compute the optical to CO size ratio for 21 galaxies resolved by ALMA at $\sim 3$."$5$ resolution (6.5 kpc), finding that the molecular gas is on average $\sim$ 0.6 times more compact than the stellar component. We obtain a global Schmidt-Kennicutt relation, given by $\log [\Sigma_{\rm SFR}/({\rm M_{\odot} yr^{-1}kpc^{-2}})]=(1.26 \pm 0.02) \times \log [\Sigma_{\rm M_{H2}}/({\rm M_{\odot}\,pc^{-2}})]-(3.6 \pm 0.2)$. We find a significant fraction of galaxies lying at `intermediate efficiencies' between a long-standing mode of star-formation activity and a starburst, specially at $\rm L_{IR}=10^{11-12} L_{\odot}$. Combining our observations with data taken from the literature, we propose that star formation efficiencies can be parameterised by $\log [{\rm SFR/M_{H2}}]=0.19 \times {\rm (\log {L_{IR}}-11.45)}-8.26-0.41 \times \arctan[-4.84 (\log {\rm L_{IR}}-11.45) ]$. We present the calibration between the dust continuum luminosity and interstellar gas content obtained from the Valpara\'{i}so ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES) sample of 67 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 0.02<$z$<0.35. We use CO(1-0) observations from the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) to trace the molecular gas mass, $M_{\mathrm{H}_{2}}$, and estimate the rest-frame monochromatic luminosity at 850 $\mu$m, $L_{\nu_{850}}$, by extrapolating the dust continuum from MAGPHYS modelling of the far-ultraviolet to submillimetre spectral energy distribution sampled by the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Adopting $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ = 6.5 (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$)$^{-1}$, the average ratio of $L_{\nu_{850}}/M_{\mathrm{H}_{2}}$ = (6.4$\pm$1.4)$\times10^{19}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ $\mathrm{M}_{\odot}^{-1}$, in excellent agreement with literature values. We obtain a linear fit of $\log_{10}$ ($M_{\mathrm{H}_{2}}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) = (0.92$\pm$0.02) $\log_{10}$ ($L_{\nu_{850}}$/erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$)-(17.31$\pm$0.59). We use new Band-3 CO(1-0) observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the physical conditions in the interstellar gas of a sample of 27 dusty main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 0.03<$z$<0.2 present in the Valpara\'iso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). The sample is drawn from far-IR bright galaxies over $\sim$160 deg$^{2}$ in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (HATLAS), which is covered by Herschel [CII] 158 $\mu$m spectroscopy and far-infrared (FIR) photometry. The [CII] and CO lines are both detected at >5$\sigma$ in 26 sources. We find an average [CII] to CO(1-0) luminosity ratio of 3500$\pm$1200 for our sample that is consistent with previous studies. Using the [CII], CO and FIR measurements as diagnostics of the physical conditions of the interstellar medium, we compare these observations to the predictions of a photodissociation region (PDR) model to determine the gas density, surface temperature, pressure, and the strength of the incident far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation field, $G_{0}$, normalised to the Habing Field. The majority of our sample exhibit hydrogen densities of 4 < $\log n/\mathrm{cm}^{3}$ < 5.5 and experience an incident FUV radiation field with strengths of 2 < $\log G_0$ < 3 when adopting standard adjustments. A comparison to galaxy samples at different redshifts indicates that the average strength of the FUV radiation field appears constant up to redshift $z\sim$6.4, yet the neutral gas density increases with redshift by a factor of $\sim$100, that persists regardless of various adjustments to our observable quantities. This evolution could provide an explanation for the observed evolution of the star formation rate density with cosmic time, yet could arise from a combination of observational biases when using different suites of emission lines as diagnostic tracers of PDR gas., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We present a sample of 80 candidate strongly lensed galaxies with flux density above 100mJy at 500{\mu}m extracted from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), over an area of 600 square degrees. Available imaging and spectroscopic data allow us to confirm the strong lensing in 20 cases and to reject it in one case. For other 8 objects the lensing scenario is strongly supported by the presence of two sources along the same line of sight with distinct photometric redshifts. The remaining objects await more follow-up observations to confirm their nature. The lenses and the background sources have median redshifts z_L = 0.6 and z_S = 2.5, respectively, and are observed out to z_L = 1.2 and z_S = 4.2. We measure the number counts of candidate lensed galaxies at 500{\mu}m and compare them with theoretical predictions, finding a good agreement for a maximum magnification of the background sources in the range 10-20. These values are consistent with the magnification factors derived from the lens modelling of individual systems. The catalogue presented here provides sub- mm bright targets for follow-up observations aimed at exploiting gravitational lensing to study with un-precedented details the morphological and dynamical properties of dusty star forming regions in z >~ 1.5 galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a study of the dust, stars and atomic gas (HI) in an HI-selected sample of local galaxies (z<0.035) in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) fields. This HI-selected sample reveals a population of very high gas fraction (>80 per cent), low stellar mass sources that appear to be in the earliest stages of their evolution. We compare this sample with dust and stellar mass selected samples to study the dust and gas scaling relations over a wide range of gas fraction (proxy for evolutionary state of a galaxy). The most robust scaling relations for gas and dust are those linked to NUV-r (SSFR) and gas fraction, these do not depend on sample selection or environment. At the highest gas fractions, our additional sample shows the dust content is well below expectations from extrapolating scaling relations for more evolved sources, and dust is not a good tracer of the gas content. The specific dust mass for local galaxies peaks at a gas fraction of ~75 per cent. The atomic gas depletion time is also longer for high gas fraction galaxies, opposite to the trend found for molecular gas depletion timescale. We link this trend to the changing efficiency of conversion of HI to H2 as galaxies increase in stellar mass surface density as they evolve. The radiation of stars heats dust grains in the diffuse interstellar medium and in star-forming regions in galaxies. Modelling this interaction provides information on dust in galaxies, a vital ingredient for their evolution. It is not straightforward to identify the stellar populations heating the dust, and to link attenuation to emission on a sub-galactic scale. Radiative transfer models are able to simulate this dust-starlight interaction in a realistic, three-dimensional setting. We investigate the dust heating mechanisms on a local and global galactic scale, using the Andromeda galaxy (M31) as our laboratory. We perform a series of panchromatic radiative transfer simulations of Andromeda with our code SKIRT. The high inclination angle of M31 complicates the 3D modelling and causes projection effects. However, the observed morphology and flux density are reproduced fairly well from UV to sub-millimeter wavelengths. Our model reveals a realistic attenuation curve, compatible with previous, observational estimates. We find that the dust in M31 is mainly (91 % of the absorbed luminosity) heated by the evolved stellar populations. The bright bulge produces a strong radiation field and induces non-local heating up to the main star-forming ring at 10 kpc. The relative contribution of unevolved stellar populations to the dust heating varies strongly with wavelength and with galactocentric distance.The dust heating fraction of unevolved stellar populations correlates strongly with NUV-r colour and specific star formation rate. We study the correlation between far-infared/submm dust emission and atomic gas column density in order to derive the properties of the high Galactic latitude, low density, Milky Way cirrus in the foreground of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Dust emission maps from 60 to 850 um are obtained from SPIRE observations carried out within the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey, complemented by IRAS-IRIS and Planck-HFI maps. Data from the Arecibo legacy Fast ALFA Survey is used to derive atomic gas column densities for two broad velocity components, low and intermediate velocity clouds. Dust emissivities are derived for each gas component and each far-infared/submm band. For the low velocity clouds, we measure an average emissivity 0.79 +/- 0.08 times 1E-20 MJy sr^-1 cm^2 at 250 um. After fitting a modified blackbody to the available bands, we estimated a dust absorption cross-section 0.49 +/- 0.13 times 1E-25 cm^2 H^-1 at 250 um (with dust temperature T = 20.4 +/- 1.5 K and spectral index beta = 1.53 +/- 0.17). The results are in excellent agreement with those obtained by Planck over a much larger coverage of the high Galactic latitude cirrus (50% of the sky vs 0.2% in our work). For dust associated with intermediate velocity gas, we confirm earlier Planck results and find a higher temperature and lower emissivity and cross-section. After subtracting the modelled components, we find regions at scales smaller than 20' where the residuals deviate significantly from the average, cosmic-infrared-background dominated, scatter. These large residuals are most likely due to local variations in the cirrus dust properties (and/or the dust/atomic-gas correlation) or to high-latitude molecular clouds with average N_H2 <~ 1E20 cm^-2.
