Abstract

Heat Shock Factor 1 (HSF1) is best known as the master transcriptional regulator of the heat-shock response (HSR), a conserved adaptive mechanism critical for protein homeostasis (proteostasis). Combining a genome-wide RNAi library with an HSR reporter, we identified Jumonji domain-containing protein 6 (JMJD6) as an essential mediator of HSF1 activity. In follow-up studies, we found that JMJD6 is itself a noncanonical transcriptional target of HSF1 which acts as a critical regulator of proteostasis. In a positive feedback circuit, HSF1 binds and promotes JMJD6 expression, which in turn reduces heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) R469 monomethylation to disrupt HSP70-HSF1 repressive complexes resulting in enhanced HSF1 activation. Thus, JMJD6 is intricately wired into the proteostasis network where it plays a critical role in cellular adaptation to proteotoxic stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ObjectiveWe hypothesized that professional football teams would perform better than anticipated during games occurring close to their circadian peak in performance.DesignWe reviewed the past 40 years of evening and daytime professional football games between west coast and east coast United States teams. In order to account for known factors influencing football game outcomes we compared the results to the point spread which addresses all significant differences between opposing teams for sports betting purposes. One sample t-tests, Wilcoxon signed ranked tests, and linear regression were performed. Comparison to day game data was included as a control.SettingAcademic medical center.ParticipantsN/A.InterventionsN/A.ResultsThe results were strongly in favor of the west coast teams during evening games against east coast teams, with the west coast teams beating the point spread about twice as often (t = 3.95, P < 0.0001) as east coast teams. For similar daytime game match-ups, we observed no such advantage.ConclusionsSleep and circadian physiology have profound effects on human function including the performance of elite athletes. Professional football players playing close to the circadian peak in performance demonstrate a significant athletic advantage over those who are playing at other times. Application of this knowledge is likely to enhance human performance.

6. The University--Some Differences from Other Organizations.

Abstract

This report discusses the differences between universities and business institutions and why they are different in handling their affairs. The premise of the report is that public universities must become more transparent if they are to receive adequate support from interested parties. Five main areas are discussed in a comparative assessment between these types of organizations. The first asks why universities rarely set specific goals toward which progress can be measured. The second concerns the problems and limited progress universities have made in measuring output and enhancing efficiency in teaching and research. Third is the role of competition in improving research and graduate teaching compared with the relatively weak competitive forces leading to improved undergraduate programs. The fourth area examines the reasons for complex committee structures, widely dispersed authority, and requirements for effective leadership. Finally, the paper examines some of the much-criticized features of academic appointments such as tenure, sabbaticals, irregular hours, and perceived high level of freedom. Contains 12 references.
