The current study seeks to understand the potential benefits of culturally matched cross-age peer mentoring for Black and Latinx adolescent mentors residing in low-income, urban communities. Data for the study were derived from a 4-year longitudinal project examining the effectiveness of community-based cross-age mentoring. Data from the current sample (N = 249, 60.6% female, M = 16.72 years) were analyzed using HLM. Findings indicated that the mentoring relationship bond rather than attendance predicted change on several positive outcomes. Adolescent mentors were found to experience improvements in several areas of positive youth development, ethnic identity, and GPA after the program was completed and at 9 to 12 months follow up. Researchers propose an adapted theoretical model of the impacts of youth cross-age mentoring in low-income communities of color. Findings from the current study offer key information on the value of facilitating empowering, person-focused services in concert with members of marginalized communities.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of knee joint range of motion (RoM) on the torque–velocity relationship and fatigue in the knee extensor muscles of 7 young (median = 26 y) and 7 older (68 y) adults. Each leg was assigned a RoM (35° or 75°) over which to perform a torque–velocity protocol (maximal isokinetic contractions, 60–300°·s−1) and a fatigue protocol (120 maximal contractions at 120°·s−1, 0.5 Hz). Six older participants were unable to reach 300°·s−1 over 35°. Therefore, the velocity eliciting 75% of peak torque at 60°·s−1 (V75, °·s−1) was calculated for each RoM from a fit of individual torque–velocity curves (60–240°·s−1), and ΔV75 (35°–75°) was determined. Fatigue (final torque/initial torque) was used to calculate Δfatigue (35°–75°). ΔV75 was not different from 0 in young (−28.3°·s−1 [−158.6 to 55.7], median [range], P =.091) or older (−18.5°·s−1 [−95.0 to 23.9], P =.128), with no difference by age (P =.710). In contrast, fatigue was greater for 75° in young (Δfatigue = 25.9% [17.5–30.3], P =.018) and older (17.2% [11.9–52.9], P =.018), with no effect of age (P =.710). These data indicate that, regardless of age, RoM did not alter the torque–velocity relationship between 60 and 240°·s−1, and fatigue was greater with a larger RoM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored the experiences of Head Start parents who were becoming involved in their pre-school-age children's Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. Seven participants from the rural Midwest engaged in focus group (n = 2) or interview (n = 1) format discussions regarding barriers to involvement in the IEP process and recommendations to alleviate these barriers. Qualitative analysis with thematic coding was used to interpret the data. Results indicated that parents believed they lacked necessary information that could increase their advocacy for their children and reported the wording of the IEP was too difficult to understand. In addition, parents felt that their negative emotions barred them from being active members at IEP meetings. Parents noted that Head Start's encouragement and positive parent-teacher communication helped alleviate some barriers but believed that a yearly class on IEPs and more frequent one-on-one meetings would help them become better advocates for their young children.

Multicultural peer-consultation teams represent one promising approach to supporting mental health providers by providing consultation that is multiculturally conscious and integrates front-and-center concepts related to diversity in identities and lived experiences (i.e., multiculturalism), intersectionality, inclusivity, health equity, antiracism, and anti-oppression. Herein, we take an implementation science-informed approach to describing the development, implementation, and sustainment of multicultural peer-consultation teams in two professional settings—a Veterans Affairs hospital and a psychology department training clinic. We operationalize the core and adaptable components of this model. Last, we reflect on our collective lessons learned and offer recommendations based on our efforts to create teams across mental health care settings. Thus, the present article may function as an implementation blueprint of sorts that others can follow as they consider ways that they can create similar teams at their institutions. Public Significance Statement: With increased recognition of widening health inequities disproportionately impacting communities that have been systematically excluded and/or harmed by the mental health field, there is a crucial need for educational approaches that empower and equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills to provide care that is multiculturally conscious, inclusive, equitable, antiracist, and anti-oppressive. Multicultural peer-consultation teams represent one approach aligned with these goals. This article describes the multicultural peer-consultation model and reports on its implementation across distinct mental health care settings, with the aim of continued wide-scale dissemination to ultimately make a sustained public health impact. Objective Benefit-finding and growth is an important process across a range of medical populations. However, it has been understudied in the context of lifelong chronic conditions, such as spina bifida (SB). This study aimed to develop a new measure of benefit-finding and growth for youth with SB, confirm its factor structure, and examine its psychometric properties. Method To generate items for the new measure, 20 adolescents and young adults with SB completed qualitative interviews regarding their experience of living with SB. Interviews were coded for benefits. Questionnaire items were generated from these benefits, and an expert panel refined the wording of these items. The resultant 31-item measure was shared with six of the 20 participants for feedback and then piloted among 251 youth with SB. The factor structure of the measure was confirmed and reliability and convergent validity were assessed. Results Both a one- and four-factor structure were supported. The four factors include: Life Perspectives and Priorities, Personal Characteristics and Traits, Connections and Opportunities, and Problem Solving. Higher total and factor scores represent greater benefit-finding and growth. The measure demonstrated excellent internal consistency (α = 0.95). The new measure also showed significant positive correlations with optimism, positive affect, and life satisfaction. Conclusions This study produced a measure of benefit-finding and growth for youth with SB. Clinically, information about what youth with SB perceive to be their areas of strength and growth from their condition provides crucial insight into which factors to enhance in this population. Although it is clear that the bioenergetic basis of skeletal muscle fatigue (transient decrease in peak torque or power in response to contraction) involves intramyocellular acidosis (decreased pH) and accumulation of inorganic phosphate (Pi) in response to the increased energy demand of contractions, the effects of old age on the build-up of these metabolites has not been evaluated systematically. The purpose of this study was to compare pH and [Pi] in young (18–45 yr) and older (55+ yr) human skeletal muscle in vivo at the end of standardized contraction protocols. Full study details were prospectively registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022348972). PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus databases were systematically searched and returned 12 articles that fit the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. Participant characteristics, contraction mode (isometric, dynamic), and final pH and [Pi] were extracted. A random-effects model was used to calculate the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for pH and [Pi] across age groups. A subgroup analysis for contraction mode was also performed. Young muscle acidified more than older muscle (MD = -0.12 pH; 95%CI = -0.18,-0.06; p<0.01). There was no overall difference by age in final [Pi] (MD = 2.14 mM; 95%CI = -0.29,4.57; p = 0.08), although sensitivity analysis revealed that removing one study resulted in greater [Pi] in young than older muscle (MD = 3.24 mM; 95%CI = 1.72,4.76; p<0.01). Contraction mode moderated these effects (p = 0.02) such that young muscle acidified (MD = -0.19 pH; 95%CI = -0.27,-0.11; p<0.01) and accumulated Pi (MD = 4.69 mM; 95%CI = 2.79,6.59; p<0.01) more than older muscle during isometric, but not dynamic, contractions. The smaller energetic perturbation in older muscle indicated by these analyses is consistent with its relatively greater use of oxidative energy production. During dynamic contractions, elimination of this greater reliance on oxidative energy production and consequently lower metabolite accumulations in older muscle may be important for understanding task-specific, age-related differences in fatigue. In the present study, we sought to examine response trajectories to brief (11-week) school-based homework interventions and factors that may help schools predict responses. Participants included 222 middle-school students (72% boys; M[subscript age] = 12.00 years, SD = 1.02) who had been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and had received either a contingency-management or skills-based intervention for homework problems. Both interventions included 16 20-min student meetings with a school counselor and two parent meetings. Trajectories of response for ratings of homework problems and assignment completion were examined from baseline to a 6-month follow-up using growth-mixture models. Baseline variables routinely measured in school settings, including grade-point average (GPA), math and reading achievement, and externalizing and internalizing symptoms, were examined as predictors of treatment-response trajectories. The majority of students (68-81%) showed positive treatment response across outcomes. However, trajectories of students who did not respond to intervention were identified for each outcome. Baseline GPA significantly predicted trajectories for all outcomes and achievement scores significantly predicted trajectories of teacher-reported homework performance and parent-reported homework problems, such that youth with relatively higher baseline GPAs and achievement were most likely to respond. In contrast, neither externalizing nor internalizing symptoms were significant predictors of response trajectories. Schools can use GPA and academic-achievement data to determine whether brief school-based interventions for homework problems are likely to succeed. Students with ADHD who display severe academic impairment (i.e., GPA lower than 2.0 at baseline) may benefit from a more long-term, intensive intervention.

Objective This study aims to characterize the growth in condition-related knowledge in youth with spina bifida (SB), identify neurocognitive predictors of growth, and examine associations between growth in knowledge and subsequent levels of medical self-management skills. Methods Participants were recruited from a larger longitudinal study involving 140 youth with SB and caregivers, who completed questionnaires and interviews every 2 years over 8 years. The current study included the youth report of condition-related knowledge and medical self-management skills. Youth attention and executive functioning were assessed via parent and teacher reports and performance-based assessment. Latent growth curves were conducted in M plus Version 8 (Múthen, L. K. & Múthen, B. O. [1998]. Mplus User's Guide. [Eighth]. Muthén & Muthén) to examine change over time in youth-reported condition-related knowledge. Neurocognitive variables were included as predictors of growth in knowledge and regression analyses were used to predict medical self-management skills from growth in condition-related knowledge. Results Youth condition-related knowledge increased linearly. Better youth performance on working memory and attention performance-based tasks predicted a higher intercept for condition-related knowledge at T1, but not slope. Teacher and parent reports of inattention and executive dysfunction were not consistent predictors of intercept and growth. Slope of condition-related knowledge was not predictive of subsequent youth self-management skills. Conclusions Youth with SB gain condition-related knowledge over time. However, executive dysfunction and inattention may impede gains in condition-related knowledge. Thus, executive functioning supports, attention-related interventions, and psychoeducation may support condition-related knowledge gains and later medical self-management skills, but further research assessing family and cultural factors is needed. Many students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit deficits in motivation to pursue long-term goals. Students with ADHD have particular difficulty with motivation to complete homework-related tasks and often fail to complete assignments. Although these problems are common and may impact academic performance, no homework-motivation measures have been validated for use with students with ADHD. The primary goal of the present study was to evaluate the factor structure and predictive validity of a homework-motivation measure based upon the expectancy--value theory of achievement motivation. A sample of 285 middle school students with ADHD completed the measure, and confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate the proposed factor structure and associations with parent and teacher ratings of homework performance. A 2-factor structure emerged, and model fit was excellent. Further, student-rated ability--expectancy beliefs demonstrated significant associations with parent-rated homework problems and performance and with teacher-rated homework performance and percentage of assignments turned in above and beyond ADHD symptoms. Future directions for studying the importance of motivation in students with ADHD are provided, with particular attention to the role that reward sensitivity may play in motivation.

Children and adolescents with ADHD often have difficulties with organization, time management, and planning skills, and these skills are a common target of intervention. A limited array of tools for measuring these abilities in youth is available, and one of the most prominent measures is the Children's Organizational Skills Scale (COSS). Although the COSS fills an important need, a replication of the COSS factor structure outside of initial measure development has not been conducted in any population. Given that the COSS is frequently used in ADHD research, the current study evaluated the factor structure of the parent-rated COSS in a sample (N = 619) of adolescents with ADHD. Results indicated that the original factor structure could be replicated, although the use of item parcels appeared to affect model fit statistics. An alternative bi-factor model was also tested that did not require the use of parcels, with results suggesting similar model fit in comparison with the original factor structure. Exploratory validity tests indicated that the domain-general factor of the bi-factor model appears related to broad executive functioning abilities.
