Iron working in Aegean Thrace during Classical and Roman times was based on different choices of raw ma-terials from a variety of available ores, possibly determined by cultural criteria. The precursors to selective ore procurement can be seen in earlier evidence from Thasos in the form of a few iron smelting waste remains found at the cemeteries of Kastri dating to the Early Iron Age. More substantial evidence for smelting and smithing activities has been noted in the Archaic city of Thasos, but their interdisciplinary investigation is pending. So far, the only comprehensive study on smelting and smithing slag and iron objects that has pro-vided crucial information on the differential techniques employed in iron production of the 5th century BC across this region has focused on finds from Abdera and Zone. More recently, iron slag has been collected from the northern enclosure of Abdera in the framework of an ongoing survey project (APAX) as well as during excavation at the Thasian colony of Pistyros, yet study is ongoing and only information on spatial distributions is currently available. This paper aims to briefly review the existing research data and to present new results from a recent instrumental analysis on iron working slag recovered in the framework of the Molyvoti, Thrace, Archaeological Project (MTAP). The finds derive from contexts of the 4th century BC, exca-vated between 2013 and 2019, and their analysis with optical microscopy and SEM/EDS offers valuable data on the smelting and smithing practices prevalent on site that display similarities with some of the other colo-nies of Aegean Thrace. Based on the current results limonite and/or hematite were the most commonly used ores and a Ti-rich iron source of lesser significance as suggested by the chemical composition of a single sam-ple. The bloomery process could be characterized as efficient with minor losses of metal into the slag. The use of fluxes to lower the melting point of iron during smelting has been also confirmed. Such findings are im-portant as they complement previous data on the technology of smelting local ores to supply the iron indus-tries in Aegean Thrace.

The Gotlandic smith has been depicted on several picture stones and is a subject of fear and respect in the Old Norse sagas. Their technological prowess can be identified through their skilful work and through the stories told about them, but one must delve deeper to identify the smith-craft itself. This thesis seeks to apply the practice of bone-smithing on the osteological material from the Gotlandic site of “Signallottan” located about a kilometre southeast of the Hanseatic walled city of Visby, a site which was excavated in 2018 to get a broader understanding of the site’s previous uses. In addition to this, an osteological and spatial analysis will be carried out to identify the role of the smith and the use of bones in smithing, as well as a literature study of texts depicting or discussing the smith from the perspective of the Icelandic sagas. The thesis will focus on the application of theoretical frameworks with their basis in materiality, agency, and entanglement to interpret what activities can be identified in Signallottan through the current analyses in correlation with the extensive previous identification of osteological material from the site. This thesis will seek to identify the animal species that are present in the osteological material as well as the degree of cremation of the bones, which could imply that bones were used in smithing practice and ritual during the Viking Age. Around 2,5kg of bones were analysed during the thesis, a majority of which were burnt. The spatial analysis of the site, which was carried out through GIS, reveals a connection between finds of iron, slag, and bone together with oxide scale to form the interpretation of the site as having been used for smithing, that may have used bone as fuel during the carbonisation-process. The smithing practices during the Viking Age are deemed to be a supernaturally connected practice with transformative implications of seiðr, old Norse magic, but are also practices that were highly dependent on the craftsman’s skill and a network of trade to receive the materials necessary for larger-scale production in an agricultural society.

Models for iron innovation in Eurasia are predicated on understanding the relationship between the bronze and iron industries. In eastern Anatolia, the South Caucasus, and Iran, the absence of scientific analyses of metallurgical debris has obscured the relative chronology, spatial organization, and economic context of early iron and contemporary copper-alloy industries. Survey and excavation at Mtsvane Gora, a fortified hilltop site close to major polymetallic ore sources in the Lesser Caucasus range, recovered metallurgical debris dating to the 8th-6th centuries BC. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy and wavelength dispersive spectrometry revealed evidence for both iron and copper-alloy metallurgy, including smithing and alloying. Metal particles trapped within clear iron smithing slags were contaminated with copper, arsenic, and tin, suggesting that iron and copper-alloy working took place in the same hearths. The discovery of a small fragment of unprocessed material consisting of pyrite and jarosite, minerals typical of major nearby polymetallic ore deposits, links the secondary smithing and alloying at Mtsvane Gora with nearby mining activities, though the nature of those connections remains unclear. While the earliest iron in the region probably predates the Mtsvane Gora assemblage, the remains date to a period when iron use was still expanding, and they are at present the earliest analytically confirmed, radiocarbon-dated iron metallurgical debris in the Caucasus. The remains are therefore significant for understanding the spread of iron innovation eastward from Anatolia and the Levant. When considered in light of evidence from other Near Eastern sites, the results support a model for innovation in which early iron manufacturing was at least partially integrated with the copper-alloy metallurgical economy.

Some ancient types of iron were particularly renowed. Regarding the general knowlegde about iron ores in Western Europe and about the traditionnal production techniques, the factors influencing the quality of the metal are discussed.

Archaeological excavation of the Early Iron Age settlement at Zagora, Andros (Greece), from 1967 to 1974, yielded evidence of metalworking in various locations across the site, however no further analysis was carried out on the material. It is nevertheless clear from this data, as well as the results of archaeological surface survey conducted at the site in 2012, that metal production was an extensive industry at the site. Archaeometallurgical analysis has the potential to provide crucial information regarding metalworking at Zagora and can in turn, contribute to the broader understanding of the integration of industrial activity within the settlement. Such data forms a useful comparison with other contemporary sites at which metalworking was conducted, such as those at Oropos and Eretria, allowing for a better regional understanding of the role of metalworking during the Geometric period. Several different methods of analysis of this archaeometallurgical evidence from Zagora help to provide a framework for understanding the operation of metalworking at the site. Firstly, by cataloguing these finds by stratigraphic context, the spatial distribution and quantification of metallurgical slags and metalworking debris can be established. Secondly, through scientific investigation of the samples, using techniques such as Portable X-Ray Fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, the gross composition of the assemblage can be understood through the provision of semiquantitative compositional and mineralogical data. Through detailed analysis of this metallurgical waste, we can begin to identify the manufacturing techniques that were available to the ancient metalworkers of Zagora, the ore sources that they utilised, and the spatial layout of metalworking within the settlement. This analysis will be contextualised within the chaîne opératoire, and how Zagora in turn fits into the wider landscape of Early Iron Age metallurgy.

A study of the intentional deposition of Iron production and Iron working debris

Scarce findings of iron-working smelting furnaces point to the fact that the earliest evidence of iron-working process in continental Croatia originate from the Early Iron Age. Somewhat more data is available for the period of Antiquity while, only recently, first archaeological evidence of these activities during the early Middle Ages emerged. Most data was obtained from the archaeological research of the site Virje in the Drava River valey where on the same area on two nearby hills, the smelting activity took place during both of these periods. At the end of the 4th and in the 5th century the ancient smelters used either both locations simultaneously as a smelting spot or they moved their workshops depending on the availability of natural resources. During the Early Middle Ages, i.e. the 8th and the 9th century, the smelting activity continued on only one of these locations. Therefore, Virje provides a wide range of data for the study of either continuity or discontinuity of tradition and skills in primary processing of iron at the turn of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Along with the knowledge about the smelting activities at Virje, the presentation will address the traces of early medieval blacksmith's workshops in the continental Croatia, with emphasis on the finding from Čepinski Martinci- Dubrava in Slavonia. At that site inhabited in prehistoric times and later from Late Antiquity to the High Middle Ages, in one interesting feature dating from the first half of the 8th century twelve iron objects that can be linked to the blacksmith activity have been found. The context of the findings and the findings themselves suggest their possible interpretation as a hoard of iron implements. The lecture raises the question of the occasion / cause of the deposit of this group of subjects deposited in a somewhat secluded location. In this sense, the distribution of features of the settlement dated to the beginning of the 7th century, then the features from the beginning of the 8th century settlement, to which belongs the discovery of a hoard, and the distribution of features from the later stages of settlement shall be discussed also.

Metallurgical activities leave several types of traces in the area in which they take place: remnants of structures of various nature such as plain burnt, furnaces or forges, holes/containers for the collection of the products deriving from pyrotechnologic activities (charcoal, mineral, fluxing, etc.), pits for placement or storing of tools functional to the metallurgic activity, such as hoods, anvil, benches or plain of support in wood; remains of discard materials such as cinders, mineral slag, charcoal, fragments of crucibles and tuyeres, more rarely real metallic cuttings, directly related to the raw material, the semi-worked or the final products of the metallurgic activity, or tools related to the specific metallurgic job. In this paper we present the results of investigations carried out to characterize some products of metallurgic activities identified on the site of Loppio. Our results indicate that the majority of the remnants of metallurgic processes found in Loppio are associable to iron working activities, and only a minor amount to the copper or copper alloy working process. In both the cases they are not related to reduction processes (primary working), but derive from secondary working process, such as smithing activities of iron. Based on morphological and physical parameters we classified and grouped the residues of metallurgical activity found in Loppio in 11 classes, 10 of which related to the ironworking. The results of petrographic, chemical and mineralogical investigations carried out on a few samples belonging to significant classes of materials provided the early specific information on the phases and the working processes. The chemistry and the mineralogy of two samples of plano-convex bottom (PCB) smithing slag, their morphology and the abundance of this specific class of slags in the site, all suggest that the iron smithing was related to ingots of metal and /or to recycled iron, but probably not to the bloom. Further bulk analyses on these class of slags are needed to confirm this observation. Moreover the two investigated PCB slags show different mineralogical composition, compatible with different oxi-reductive conditions of production, and in one case result similar to the SFR type and in the other to the SGD one described by Serneels and Perret (2003). The presence of various types of PCB indicate a variety of ironworking processes, at various temperature, oxidation condition and produced by the use of different amounts of flux. The flux used has a silica-lime rich composition. Mineralogical analysis indicate that the temperatures of formation of the slag in the forge range between 1100-1200°C, coherently with 'optimum' temperature reported in literature for iron smithing. Since the excavations have not shown holes of forge, the identification of numerous remnants of walls of forge allows to hypothesize the presence of raised forges that, based on iconographic evidences are known to be used since the Roman age. In similar way the use of tuyeres, not recovered in the site, can be proven by negative imprints observed a the edges of some slag. A preliminary statistic analysis of spatial and chronological distribution of the investigated materials, suggests that the metallurgic activity possibly begun in the III Period of the Loppio site, in an area corresponding or close to the building IIIc.; evidence of metallurgical activity are also observed in contexts related to the Periods V and VI, mainly in the Buildings IIIb and IIIc and in the corridor IIIb /c and, less abundant, in the area III and possibly in the building V. However, the phenomenon of the redistribution of metallurgical remains in a working site, and the stratigraphic disturbance due to the different life phases of the site do not allow to attribute with certainty such finding to the Longobard period. The same consideration holds for the slags found in building V in layers ascribed to the VII Period, as a reworking cannot be excluded. The workmanship of the copper and /or of its leagues, is testified finally only in Buildings IIIb and IIIc and in the corridor IIIb/c, relatively to the Period V. Finally, no trace of metallurgic activity has been observed around Building I of sector A, where two metal bars were recovered from (Maurina this vol.), indicating that the presence of metal bars in this area is not related to working activities.

The production of iron in Anglo-Saxon England is little understood due to the lack of evidence. There are less than a dozen iron smelting sites known. This is a distinct contrast to the wealth of evidence of iron smelting during the Roman period. Should we believe that the Anglo-Saxon world was relying on recycled Roman iron? The absence of evidence should not be taken as the evidence of absence. Instead, we can look towards contemporary archaeological examples and ethnography to try and explain the production of iron and the movement of ferrous objects. This paper will argue that the production of iron was located outside the settlement. Not only does this activity occupy the periphery of the physical and cultural landscape, it was embedded in the liminal zone between reality and myth. Blacksmiths were feared for their art was associated with magic. The evidence of their mobility in north-west Europe emphasises how marginal they were in society, along with their goods. The value of items coming from the ‘outside’ was heightened as they came from the distant unknown, the unfamiliar. In order to understand the dynamic role of iron in Anglo Saxon society, we must review the negative evidence of iron smelting, and the evidence for smithing. This should be considered with reference to the literary evidence available to us in the context of the Migration period in northwest Europe. Iron production in early Anglo-Saxon England should also be sought after using archaeological prospection techniques.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGÜber die Eisenherstellung im Angelsächsischen England ist bisher aufgrund fehlender Funde wenig bekannt. Es sind weniger als zwölf Eisenproduktionsstätten nachgewiesen. Dies steht in starkem Kontrast zu den zahlreichen Beweisen für Eisenschmelzen in der Römischen Eisenzeit. Sollten wir wirklich glauben, dass Angelsachsen auf wiederverwendetes römisches Eisen angewiesen waren? Dass bisher keine Belege vorliegen, schließt deren Existenz noch lange nicht aus. Statt ihrer können zeitgleiche archäologische Beispiele und ethnographische Untersuchungen genutzt werden, um die Produktion von Eisen und Zirkulation von Eisenobjekten zu erklären. In diesem Artikel wird die Auffassung vertreten, dass die Eisenherstellung außerhalb von Siedlungen stattfanden. Diese Tätigkeiten waren nicht nur räumlich am Rande der kulturell erschlossenen Landschaft, sondern auch im übertragenen Sinne zwischen der realen Welt und der Welt der Magie und Mythen angesiedelt. Schmiede waren gefürchtet, da ihre Kunst mit Magie assoziiert war; ihre in Nordwesteuropa nachgewiesene Mobilität weist auf ihre Randstellung in der Gesellschaft hin. Der Wert ihrer Erzeugnisse wurde dadurch aufgewertet, dass sie von außerhalb kamen, aus der unbekannten Ferne. Um die dynamische Rolle von Eisen in der angelsächsischen Gesellschaft zu verstehen, ist es notwendig, das Fehlen von Belegen für Eisenherstellung neu zu bewerten und den wenigen Hinweisen auf Schmieden nachzugehen. Das sollte mit Bezug auf völkerwanderungszeitliche Textquellen aus Nordwesteuropa erfolgen. Weiterhin sollte Eisenproduktion im frühen Angelsächsischen England mithilfe archäologischer Prospektion erforscht werden.

A study of the intentional deposition of Iron production and Iron working debris

The so-called « ville basse » of Castellas, in Murviel-lès-Montpellier (Hérault), covers the slopes of a hill on the top of which stands an oldest settlement – « ville haute » - that existed at least in the IInd century BC. The powerful fortification walls made of large stones that surround the « ville basse » adjoin the wall of the upper village at one end and, at the other end, lean against a retaining wall which separates upper and lower cities. Excavations lead between 2001 and 2008 in the vicinity of the walls and of the gates place the erection of the fortifications around the middle and/or during the third quarter of the Ist c. BC.The nature and evolution of these peripherical zones have been characterized when digging and their chronology is based on the analysis of ceramics and coins. The monument carries on local building techniques belonging to Iron Age, but its existence itself raises the question of the status of this city within the province of Narbonnaise, by the time of the cesarean conquest., La « ville basse » du Castellas de Murviel-lès-Montpellier (Hérault) s’étend sur les pentes d’une colline au sommet de laquelle se trouve l’agglomération initiale, ou « ville haute », implantée au plus tard au IIe s. av. n. è. La fortification faite de grands blocs de pierre qui entoure la ville basse s’appuie à une extrémité contre la muraille de la ville haute et, à l’autre extrémité, contre un mur de soutènement intermédiaire. Les fouilles réalisées entre 2001 et 2008 aux abords de l’enceinte périphérique et du mur intermédiaire, à proximité de trois portes et d’une poterne, conduisent à dater l’ensemble de cette fortification autour du milieu et/ou durant le troisième quart du Ier s. av. n. è. La nature de l’occupation des zones proches des courtines et des portes, leur évolution et leur datation ont été précisées par les fouilles en s’appuyant sur l’analyse des mobiliers céramique et numismatique. Par ses techniques de construction, ce monument perpétue des traditions protohistoriques régionales mais sa réalisation, dans le cadre de la Narbonnaise et aux alentours de la conquête césarienne, pose le problème du statut de l’agglomération.

Si les différents travaux réalisés dans une forge sont assez bien connus, il est difficile de les retrouver au travers de l’analyse des seuls déchets. Ce sont pourtant ceux-ci que l’on retrouve presque exclusivement sur les ateliers dégagés au cours de fouilles archéologiques. Pour en extraire un maximum de renseignements, il est nécessaire de mettre en place une méthodologie rigoureuse d’étude, depuis l’échantillonnage sur le terrain jusqu’aux analyses chimiques en laboratoire. Les notions de quantification et de représentativité sont extrêmement importantes pour tenter de qualifier et quantifier les travaux effectués par le forgeron, pour déterminer la nature des matériaux employés et pour tenter d’estimer une quantité minimale de fer travaillé. L’étude, bien que ciblée sur les scories en culot, montre que l’ensemble des déchets produits dans un atelier doit être pris en considération lors des études paléométallurgiques si l’on veut réellement appréhender l’atelier. L’exemple du site du Puy-de-Grâce (La Tène finale) permet de documenter les apports de cette méthodologie. If the different works produced in a smithing workshop are well known, it is difficult to identify them only from the analyses from the wastes. However, these wastes are generally the only remnants that can be found during excavation of archaeological ironworkshops. To obtain the maximum of informations of these wastes, it is necessary to propose a rigorous methodology, from the sampling in the archaeological site to chemical analyses in laboratory. The quantification and representativeness notions are very important to qualify and quantify the works operated by the blacksmith, to determine the nature of used materials and to estimate the minimal quantity of worked iron. This study, although targeted on the tape slags, shows that it is necessary to take into account the totality of the wastes found in the archaeological smithy during the archeaometallurgical studies for a good comprehension of this smithy functioning. The Puy-de-Grâce example (France) allows documenting the contribution of this methodology.

Maziva pro zápustkové kování a jejich technika nanášení mají rozhodující vliv na kvalitu a náklady výkovků, na spolehlivost, produktivitu i na ekologičnost procesu kování. Maziva musí být optimálně koncipována tak, aby byla za specifických podmínek procesu mezi polotovarem a nástrojem zabezpečena jejich co největší účinnost. Příspěvek ukazuje, jak mohou být snižovány výrobní náklady při sladění vysoce výkonných maziv a jejich optimálního nanášení. Zároveň je uveden příklad moderních konceptů mazání pro náročné technologie zápustkového kování. Die lubricants and the techniques to apply them essentually influence quality and costs of forged components and reliability, productivity and environmental acceptance of forging processes. The lubricants have to be optimally designed to show their full efficiency under the specific contact conditions between die and workpiece. It is shown how the production costs can be reduced through an optimized use of efficient lubricants and application techniques. Selected examples for progressive lubrication concepts in challenging forging processes are given.

Dynamický vývoj a optimalizace tvářecích procesů v sobě zahrnuje řadu technologických a materiálových aspektů. V současné době se objevuje na trhu celá řada nových materiálů, pro které je nutno najít nové optimální technologie a postupy zpracování. Jednou z efektivních možností jak toho dosáhnout, je i materiálové modelování. V oblasti materiálového modelování došlo v poslední době k výraznému pokroku a byla zavedena celá řada inovací. Velký rozvoj zaznamenávají i experimentální zařízení. V tomto roce byl v Plzni uveden do provozu nový simulátor pro přesné modelování náročných termomechanických aplikací. Grain refinement of bulk parts made from metallic materials is an important subject of research of metallic materials in last 10 years. Apart from traditional grain refinement approaches basing on phase transformation and recrystallization, also deformation-based approaches can be used for grain refinement. Many research works show that through application of extremely high amounts of deformation, grains sizes below 1 micron (in some cases several tens nanometers) can be achieved. For the ECAP technique (Equal Channel Angular Processing), a sectional armed tool has been developed. For the CGP technique (Constrained Groove Pressing) two variants of tools have been developed. In the first variant, the frame of the tool has a form of special clamp, in which the lower forming die is fixed. This clamp also guides the upper forming die. The second variant is designed in order to enable processing of bigger specimens and alloys with higher toughness. Tools for the RET deformation technique (Reversing Expansion of Tubes) consist from matrix, two flanges, mandrel and a back-plate. This technology will be tested shortly.

This paper is not a handbook of archaeometry, but a statement of methods for the studies of ancient ironmaking wastes and products, for the archaeologists. The features of the main iron making processes and their products are explained after some basic concepts of mineralogy, metallurgy and on physico-chemical processing. The main methods of studies used in archaeometry applied to the productions and scraps are being discussed, especially the one about the low shaft furnace or direct process., Cet article n'est pas un manuel d'archéométrie, mais un exposé des méthodes d'étude des produits et déchets de la sidérurgie ancienne, auxquels peuvent être confrontés les archéologues. During the last excavations (1988-1993) of the huge roman slag heap at Les Martys (Aude, France), important remains of shaft furnaces and smithing heartheswere discovered. Many pieces of wastes produced by iron smelting and smithing are characterized on one hand by their macroscopic features (specially useful during field work), on the other hand by its mineralogy and geochimistry. These evidences allow us to understand better the working order of the shaft furnaces and smithing operations. By the use of oak and beech charcoal, the ancient iron makers could reach easily 1350 degrees centigrade, as we can deduce from the equilibrium of silicates, oxides and spinelles of tap slags.
