The path of tokamak fusion and International thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) is maintaining high-performance plasma to produce sufficient fusion power. This effort is hindered by the transient energy burst arising from the instabilities at the boundary of plasmas. Conventional 3D magnetic perturbations used to suppress these instabilities often degrade fusion performance and increase the risk of other instabilities. This study presents an innovative 3D field optimization approach that leverages machine learning and real-time adaptability to overcome these challenges. Implemented in the DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks, this method has consistently achieved reactor-relevant core confinement and the highest fusion performance without triggering damaging bursts. This is enabled by advances in the physics understanding of self-organized transport in the plasma edge and machine learning techniques to optimize the 3D field spectrum. The success of automated, real-time adaptive control of such complex systems paves the way for maximizing fusion efficiency in ITER and beyond while minimizing damage to device components.

- Abstract
One way that institutions have responded to hostile campus environments for minoritized students is by creating bias response teams (BRTs). In this critical intrinsic case study, we examined ways 16 campus educators (i.e., student affairs professionals, faculty, and administrators) at a large predominantly White public university in the Midwest deployed and reinforced dominant conceptions of cultural and social capital when responding to incidents. Findings indicate that BRT work often stalls out at supporting victims of bias and does not often engender the larger organizational change desired by campus educators. Implications for campus educators responding to incidents of bias are discussed.

A review of TFTR plasma transport studies is presented. Parallel transport and the confinement of suprathermal ions are found to be relatively well described by theory. Cross-field transport of the thermal plasma, however, is anomalous with the momentum diffusivity being comparable to the ion thermal diffusivity and larger than the electron thermal diffusivity in neutral beam heated discharges. Perturbative experiments have studied nonlinear dependencies in the transport coefficients and examined the role of possible nonlocal phenomena. The underlying turbulence has been studied using microwave scattering, beam emission spectroscopy and microwave reflectometry over a much broader range in k perpendicular to than previously possible. Results indicate the existence of large-wavelength fluctuations correlated with enhanced transport.

- Abstract
Electricity production through the control of nuclear fusion reactions is a promising option to meet the increasing demand for clean energy sources. The magnetically confined approach based on the tokamak is presently investigated through the international ITER project. ITER is the largest fusion development project aimed at demonstrating the capability of generating 500MW of fusion power with an input of 50MW (Q=10) for long durations (> 5 min) by controlling fusion reactions. The project requires a multidisciplinary development approach from materials to cooling system and, of course, control. The high temperature plasmas generated in a tokamak require continuous control to guarantee the achievement and sustainment of the required performance to demonstrate a high fusion energy gain. This requires an integrated set of controls with multiple inputs and multiple outputs, sharing the available actuators supported by an effective system to avoid, where possible, conditions that could ultimately, compromise the integrity of the device. This role is in the scope of the Plasma Control System (PCS). A lot of experience has been already gained from present fusion devices, but the scale of ITER and future reactors requires further developments in the field. The control in ITER is similar to other devices, but more complexity is required by the new physics to be explored in ITER scenarios, the robustness against larger loads (e.g. high neutron flux rate) and the systematic application of multiple controls sharing resources or by narrow operational spaces/proximity to instability boundaries associated with high Q operation. Moreover, the design of the PCS requires a model-based approach, considering that the machine for which it is designed is under construction. On the other hand, while the control schemes will be validated through simulations ahead of operation, the PCS will only be fully tested and commissioned through ITER operation itself. In this paper, an overview of a PCS and its design is presented followed by recent development targeting the ITER PCS for First Plasma and future operations. Constraints, limitations and challenges will be illustrated and the adopted solutions presented.

International audience; An exploratory study is presented that aims at validating a model for mode locking on the basis of a large set of ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) discharges. Not discriminating between plasma configurations, the model allows to estimate the duration of the deceleration phase, as well as the critical mode width for locking. Both quantities are important for the design of disruption avoidance algorithms that aim to affect the MHD mode rotation. It was found that the model successfully described locking of large modes in those cases where the deceleration started in a quasi-stationary phase of the discharge (i.e. with low variability of the global plasma angular momentum prior to mode seeding) and where deceleration took place over temporal intervals comparable to the momentum confinement time. Theoretical braking curves and locking durations predicted with the model were in good quantitative agreement with the experiment. On the other hand, the model failed to reproduce the braking curves of modes appearing towards the end of a transient phase, e.g. during an impurity influx or when approaching the disruptive density limit. It can be concluded that the modes were not the primary cause of the plasma momentum losses within the scope of the model. A modified mode equation of motion is proposed, which accounts for transient variation of the plasma density, e.g. during the development of a MARFE, and its impact on braking predictions is discussed. Furthermore, it was observed that a substantial fraction of modes was rotating at the onset of a major disruptive event. Consequences of this observation on disruption prediction schemes in AUG are examined.

- Abstract
The disruption mitigation system (DMS) is a key plant system to ensure the reliable and successful operation of ITER from the first experimental campaign onwards. The DMS baseline concept and design is based on present knowledge on disruption mitigation, which, nevertheless, remains subject to significant gaps in understanding, especially as concerns runaway electron (RE) formation and mitigation. The paper outlines the challenges of implementing a highly reliable DMS for ITER, presents recent progress towards the consolidation of the baseline system and develops a strategy and plan for achieving the required level of disruption mitigation to satisfy ITER’s operational needs.

The amplitude of locked instabilities, likely magnetic islands, seen as precursors to disruptions has been studied using data from the JET, ASDEX Upgrade and COMPASS tokamaks. It was found that the thermal quench, that often initiates the disruption, is triggered when the amplitude has reached a distinct level. This information can be used to determine thresholds for simple disruption prediction schemes. The measured amplitude in part depends on the distance of the perturbation to the measurement coils. Hence the threshold for the measured amplitude depends on the mode location (i.e. the rational q-surface) and thus indirectly on parameters such as the edge safety factor, q 95, and the internal inductance, li(3), that determine the shape of the q-profile. These dependencies can be used to set the disruption thresholds more precisely. For the ITER baseline scenario, with typically q 95 = 3.2, li(3) = 0.9 and taking into account the position of the measurement coils on ITER, the maximum allowable measured locked mode amplitude normalized to engineering parameters was estimated to be a·B ML(r c)/I p = 0.92 m mT/MA, or directly as a fraction edge poloidal magnetic field: B ML(r c)/B θ (a) = 5 · 10−3. But these values decrease for operation at higher q 95 or lower li(3). The analysis found furthermore that the above empirical criterion to trigger a thermal quench is more consistent with a criterion derived with the concept of a critical island size, i.e. the thermal quench seemed to be triggered at a distinct island width.
