Z-stack scanning is an emerging whole slide imaging technology that captures multiple focal planes alongside the z-axis of a glass slide. Because z-stacking can offer enhanced depth information compared to the single-layer whole slide imaging, this technology can be particularly useful in analyzing small-scaled histopathological patterns. However, its actual clinical impact remains debated with mixed results. To clarify this, we investigate the effect of z-stack scanning on artificial intelligence (AI) mitosis detection of meningiomas. With the same set of 22 Hematoxylin and Eosin meningioma glass slides scanned by three different digital pathology scanners, we tested the performance of three AI pipelines on both single-layer and z-stacked whole slide images (WSIs). Results showed that in all scanner-AI combinations, z-stacked WSIs significantly increased AI's sensitivity (+17.14%) on the mitosis detection with only a marginal impact on precision. Longitudinal MRI analysis is crucial for predicting disease outcomes, particularly in chronic conditions like hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), where early detection can significantly influence treatment strategies and patient prognosis. Yet, due to challenges like limited data availability, subtle parenchymal changes, and the irregular timing of medical screenings, current approaches have so far focused on cross-sectional imaging data. To address this, we propose HCCNet, a novel model architecture that integrates a 3D adaptation of the ConvNeXt CNN architecture with a Transformer encoder, capturing both the intricate spatial features of 3D MRIs and the complex temporal dependencies across different time points. HCCNet utilizes a two-stage pre-training process tailored for longitudinal MRI data. The CNN backbone is pre-trained using a self-supervised learning framework adapted for 3D MRIs, while the Transformer encoder is pre-trained with a sequence-order-prediction task to enhance its understanding of disease progression over time. We demonstrate the effectiveness of HCCNet by applying it to a cohort of liver cirrhosis patients undergoing regular MRI screenings for HCC surveillance. Our results show that HCCNet significantly improves predictive accuracy and reliability over baseline models, providing a robust tool for personalized HCC surveillance. Non-contact manipulation is an emerging and highly promising methodology in robotics, offering a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. Among the proposed approaches, airflow stands out for its ability to project across considerable distances and its flexibility in actuating objects of varying materials, sizes, and shapes. However, predicting airflow fields at a distance, as well as the motion of objects within them, remains notoriously challenging due to their nonlinear and stochastic nature. Here, we propose a model-based learning approach using a jet-induced airflow field for remote multi-object manipulation on a surface. Our approach incorporates an analytical model of the field, learned object dynamics, and a model-based controller. The model predicts an air velocity field over an infinite surface for a specified jet orientation, while the object dynamics are learned through a robust system identification algorithm. Using the model-based controller, we can automatically and remotely, at meter-scale distances, control the motion of single and multiple objects for different tasks, such as path-following, aggregating, and sorting., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

To protect large-scale computing environments necessary to meet increasing computing demand, cloud providers have implemented security measures to monitor Operations and Maintenance (O&M) activities and therefore prevent data loss and service interruption. Command interception systems are used to intercept, assess, and block dangerous Command-line Interface (CLI) commands before they can cause damage. Traditional solutions for command risk assessment include rule-based systems, which require expert knowledge and constant human revision to account for unseen commands. To overcome these limitations, several end-to-end learning systems have been proposed to classify CLI commands. These systems, however, have several other limitations, including the adoption of general-purpose text classifiers, which may not adapt to the language characteristics of scripting languages such as Bash or PowerShell, and may not recognize dangerous commands in the presence of an unbalanced class distribution. In this paper, we propose a transformer-based command risk classification system, which leverages the generalization power of Large Language Models (LLM) to provide accurate classification and the ability to identify rare dangerous commands effectively, by exploiting the power of transfer learning. We verify the effectiveness of our approach on a realistic dataset of production commands and show how to apply our model for other security-related tasks, such as dangerous command interception and auditing of existing rule-based systems.

Despite recent progress in reducing road fatalities, the persistently high rate of traffic-related deaths highlights the necessity for improved safety interventions. Leveraging large-scale graph-based nationwide road network data across 49 states in the USA, our study first posits the Concurrency Hypothesis from intuitive observations, suggesting a significant likelihood of incidents occurring at neighboring nodes within the road network. To quantify this phenomenon, we introduce two novel metrics, Average Neighbor Crash Density (ANCD) and Average Neighbor Crash Continuity (ANCC), and subsequently employ them in statistical tests to validate the hypothesis rigorously. Building upon this foundation, we propose the Concurrency Prior (CP) method, a powerful approach designed to enhance the predictive capabilities of general Graph Neural Network (GNN) models in semi-supervised traffic incident prediction tasks. Our method allows GNNs to incorporate concurrent incident information, as mentioned in the hypothesis, via tokenization with negligible extra parameters. The extensive experiments, utilizing real-world data across states and cities in the USA, demonstrate that integrating CP into 12 state-of-the-art GNN architectures leads to significant improvements, with gains ranging from 3% to 13% in F1 score and 1.3% to 9% in AUC metrics. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) play an increasingly critical role in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions such as border patrolling and criminal detection, thanks to their ability to access remote areas and transmit real-time imagery to processing servers. However, UAVs are highly constrained by payload size, power limits, and communication bandwidth, necessitating the development of highly selective and efficient data transmission strategies. This has driven the development of various compression and optimal transmission technologies for UAVs. Nevertheless, most methods strive to preserve maximal information in transferred video frames, missing the fact that only certain parts of images/video frames might offer meaningful contributions to the ultimate mission objectives in the ISR scenarios involving moving object detection and tracking (OD/OT). This paper adopts a different perspective, and offers an alternative AI-driven scheduling policy that prioritizes selecting regions of the image that significantly contributes to the mission objective. The key idea is tiling the image into small patches and developing a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework that assigns higher transmission probabilities to patches that present higher overlaps with the detected object of interest, while penalizing sharp transitions over consecutive frames to promote smooth scheduling shifts. Although we used Yolov-8 object detection and UDP transmission protocols as a benchmark testing scenario the idea is general and applicable to different transmission protocols and OD/OT methods. To further boost the system's performance and avoid OD errors for cluttered image patches, we integrate it with interframe interpolations.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality globally, necessitating advancements in diagnostic techniques. This study explores the application of wavelet transformation for classifying electrocardiogram (ECG) signals to identify various cardiovascular conditions. Utilizing the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database, we employed both continuous and discrete wavelet transforms to decompose ECG signals into frequency sub-bands, from which we extracted eight statistical features per band. These features were then used to train and test various classifiers, including K-Nearest Neighbors and Support Vector Machines, among others. The classifiers demonstrated high efficacy, with some achieving an accuracy of up to 96% on test data, suggesting that wavelet-based feature extraction significantly enhances the prediction of cardiovascular abnormalities in ECG data. The findings advocate for further exploration of wavelet transforms in medical diagnostics to improve automation and accuracy in disease detection. Sharing and joint processing of camera feeds and sensor measurements, known as Cooperative Perception (CP), has emerged as a new technique to achieve higher perception qualities. CP can enhance the safety of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) where their individual visual perception quality is compromised by adverse weather conditions (haze as foggy weather), low illumination, winding roads, and crowded traffic. To cover the limitations of former methods, in this paper, we propose a novel approach to realize an optimized CP under constrained communications. At the core of our approach is recruiting the best helper from the available list of front vehicles to augment the visual range and enhance the Object Detection (OD) accuracy of the ego vehicle. In this two-step process, we first select the helper vehicles that contribute the most to CP based on their visual range and lowest motion blur. Next, we implement a radio block optimization among the candidate vehicles to further improve communication efficiency. We specifically focus on pedestrian detection as an exemplary scenario. To validate our approach, we used the CARLA simulator to create a dataset of annotated videos for different driving scenarios where pedestrian detection is challenging for an AV with compromised vision. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of our two-step optimization process in improving the overall performance of cooperative perception in challenging scenarios, substantially improving driving safety under adverse conditions. Finally, we note that the networking assumptions are adopted from LTE Release 14 Mode 4 side-link communication, commonly used for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication. Nonetheless, our method is flexible and applicable to arbitrary V2V communications.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) making advancements in medical decision-making, there is a growing need to ensure doctors develop appropriate reliance on AI to avoid adverse outcomes. However, existing methods in enabling appropriate AI reliance might encounter challenges while being applied in the medical domain. With this regard, this work employs and provides the validation of an alternative approach -- majority voting -- to facilitate appropriate reliance on AI in medical decision-making. This is achieved by a multi-institutional user study involving 32 medical professionals with various backgrounds, focusing on the pathology task of visually detecting a pattern, mitoses, in tumor images. Here, the majority voting process was conducted by synthesizing decisions under AI assistance from a group of pathology doctors (pathologists). Two metrics were used to evaluate the appropriateness of AI reliance: Relative AI Reliance (RAIR) and Relative Self-Reliance (RSR). Results showed that even with groups of three pathologists, majority-voted decisions significantly increased both RAIR and RSR -- by approximately 9% and 31%, respectively -- compared to decisions made by one pathologist collaborating with AI. This increased appropriateness resulted in better precision and recall in the detection of mitoses. The expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) in pathology tasks has intensified the demand for doctors' annotations in AI development. However, collecting high-quality annotations from doctors is costly and time-consuming, creating a bottleneck in AI progress. This study investigates eye-tracking as a cost-effective technology to collect doctors' behavioral data for AI training with a focus on the pathology task of mitosis detection. One major challenge in using eye-gaze data is the low signal-to-noise ratio, which hinders the extraction of meaningful information. We tackled this by levering the properties of inter-observer eye-gaze consistencies and creating eye-gaze labels from consistent eye-fixations shared by a group of observers. Our study involved 14 non-medical participants, from whom we collected eye-gaze data and generated eye-gaze labels based on varying group sizes. We assessed the efficacy of such eye-gaze labels by training Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and comparing their performance to those trained with ground truth annotations and a heuristic-based baseline. Results indicated that CNNs trained with our eye-gaze labels closely followed the performance of ground-truth-based CNNs, and significantly outperformed the baseline. Many modern systems, such as financial, transportation, and telecommunications systems, are time-sensitive in the sense that they demand low-latency predictions for real-time decision-making. Such systems often have to contend with continuous unbounded data streams as well as concept drift, which are challenging requirements that traditional regression techniques are unable to cater to. There exists a need to create novel data stream regression methods that can handle these scenarios. We present a database-inspired datastream regression model that (a) uses inspiration from R*-trees to create granules from incoming datastreams such that relevant information is retained, (b) iteratively forgets granules whose information is deemed to be outdated, thus maintaining a list of only recent, relevant granules, and (c) uses the recent data and granules to provide low-latency predictions. The R*-tree-inspired approach also makes the algorithm amenable to integration with database systems. Our experiments demonstrate that the ability of this method to discard data produces a significant order-of-magnitude improvement in latency and training time when evaluated against the most accurate state-of-the-art algorithms, while the R*-tree-inspired granulation technique provides competitively accurate predictions

Wildfires are a significant threat to ecosystems and human infrastructure, leading to widespread destruction and environmental degradation. Recent advancements in deep learning and generative models have enabled new methods for wildfire detection and monitoring. However, the scarcity of annotated wildfire images limits the development of robust models for these tasks. In this work, we present the FLAME Diffuser, a training-free, diffusion-based framework designed to generate realistic wildfire images with paired ground truth. Our framework uses augmented masks, sampled from real wildfire data, and applies Perlin noise to guide the generation of realistic flames. By controlling the placement of these elements within the image, we ensure precise integration while maintaining the original images style. We evaluate the generated images using normalized Frechet Inception Distance, CLIP Score, and a custom CLIP Confidence metric, demonstrating the high quality and realism of the synthesized wildfire images. Specifically, the fusion of Perlin noise in this work significantly improved the quality of synthesized images. The proposed method is particularly valuable for enhancing datasets used in downstream tasks such as wildfire detection and monitoring.

This paper explores the critical domain of Revenue Management (RM) within Operations Research (OR), focusing on intricate pricing dynamics. Utilizing Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) models, the study enhances revenue optimization by considering product prices as decision variables and emphasizing the interplay between demand and supply. Recent advancements in Discrete Choice Models (DCMs), particularly those rooted in Random Regret Minimization (RRM) theory, are investigated as potent alternatives to established Random Utility Maximization (RUM) based DCMs. Despite the widespread use of DCMs in RM, a significant gap exists between cutting-edge RRM-based models and their practical integration into RM strategies. The study addresses this gap by incorporating an advanced RRM-based DCM into MILP models, addressing pricing challenges in both capacitated and uncapacitated supply scenarios. The developed models demonstrate feasibility and offer diverse interpretations of consumer choice behavior, drawing inspiration from established RUM-based frameworks. This research contributes to bridging the existing gap in the application of advanced DCMs within practical RM implementations.

We delve into the dynamics of opinions within a multiplex network using coordination games, where agents communicate either in a one-way or two-way interactions, and where a designated leader may be present. By employing graph theory and Markov chains, we illustrate that despite non-positive diagonal elements in transition probability matrices or decomposable layers, opinions generally converge under specific conditions, leading to a consensus. We further scrutinize the convergence rates of opinion dynamics in networks with one-way versus two-way interactions. We find that in networks with a designated leader, opinions converge towards the initial opinion of the leader, whereas in networks without a designated leader, opinions converge to a convex combination of the opinions of agents. Moreover, we emphasize the crucial role of designated leaders in steering opinion convergence within the network. Our experimental findings corroborate that the presence of leaders expedites convergence, with mono-directional interactions exhibiting notably faster convergence rates compared to bidirectional interactions.

This paper provides a comprehensive and, to our knowledge, the first review of inclusive human-computer interaction (HCI) within autonomous vehicles (AVs) and human-driven cars with partial autonomy, emphasizing accessibility and user-centered design principles. We explore the current technologies and HCI systems designed to enhance passenger experience, particularly for individuals with accessibility needs. Key technologies discussed include brain-computer interfaces, anthropomorphic interaction, virtual reality, augmented reality, mode adaptation, voice-activated interfaces, haptic feedback, etc. Each technology is evaluated for its role in creating an inclusive in-vehicle environment. Furthermore, we highlight recent interface designs by leading companies and review emerging concepts and prototypes under development or testing, which show significant potential to address diverse accessibility requirements. Safety considerations, ethical concerns, and adoption of AVs are other major issues that require thorough investigation. Building on these findings, we propose an end-to-end design framework that addresses accessibility requirements across diverse user demographics, including older adults and individuals with physical or cognitive impairments. This work provides actionable insights for designers, researchers, and policymakers aiming to create safer and more comfortable environments in autonomous and regular vehicles accessible to all users.

Wildfires have emerged as one of the most destructive natural disasters worldwide, causing catastrophic losses in both human lives and forest wildlife. Recently, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in wildfires, propelled by the integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and deep learning models, has created an unprecedented momentum to implement and develop more effective wildfire management. Although some of the existing survey papers have explored various learning-based approaches, a comprehensive review emphasizing the application of AI-enabled UAV systems and their subsequent impact on multi-stage wildfire management is notably lacking. This survey aims to bridge these gaps by offering a systematic review of the recent state-of-the-art technologies, highlighting the advancements of UAV systems and AI models from pre-fire, through the active-fire stage, to post-fire management. To this aim, we provide an extensive analysis of the existing remote sensing systems with a particular focus on the UAV advancements, device specifications, and sensor technologies relevant to wildfire management. We also examine the pre-fire and post-fire management approaches, including fuel monitoring, prevention strategies, as well as evacuation planning, damage assessment, and operation strategies. Additionally, we review and summarize a wide range of computer vision techniques in active-fire management, with an emphasis on Machine Learning (ML), Reinforcement Learning (RL), and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms for wildfire classification, segmentation, detection, and monitoring tasks. Ultimately, we underscore the substantial advancement in wildfire modeling through the integration of cutting-edge AI techniques and UAV-based data, providing novel insights and enhanced predictive capabilities to understand dynamic wildfire behavior.

This paper introduces a consensus-based generalized multi-population aggregative game coordination approach with application to electric vehicles charging under transmission line constraints. The algorithm enables agents to seek an equilibrium solution while considering the limited infrastructure capacities that impose coupling constraints among the users. The Nash-seeking algorithm consists of two interrelated iterations. In the upper layer, population coordinators collaborate for a distributed estimation of the coupling aggregate term in the agents' cost function and the associated Lagrange multiplier of the coupling constraint, transmitting the latest updated values to their population's agents. In the lower layer, each agent updates its best response based on the most recent information received and communicates it back to its population coordinator. For the case when the agents' best response mappings are non-expansive, we prove the algorithm's convergence to the generalized Nash equilibrium point of the game. The collective behavior of swarms is extremely difficult to estimate or predict, even when the local agent rules are known and simple. The presented work seeks to leverage the similarities between fluids and swarm systems to generate a thermodynamics-inspired characterization of the collective behavior of robotic swarms. While prior works have borrowed tools from fluid dynamics to design swarming behaviors, they have usually avoided the task of generating a fluids-inspired macroscopic state (or macrostate) description of the swarm. This work will bridge the gap by seeking to answer the following question: is it possible to generate a small set of thermodynamics-inspired macroscopic properties that may later be used to quantify all possible collective behaviors of swarm systems? In this paper, we present three macroscopic properties analogous to pressure, temperature, and density of a gas, to describe the behavior of a swarm that is governed by only attractive and repulsive agent interactions. These properties are made to satisfy an equation similar to the ideal gas law, and also generalized to satisfy the virial equation of state for real gases. Finally, we investigate how swarm specifications such as density and average agent velocity affect the system macrostate.

Designing distributed systems to have predictable performance under high load is difficult because of resource exhaustion, non-linearity, and stochastic behaviour. Timeliness, i.e., delivering results within defined time bounds, is a central aspect of predictable performance. In this paper, we focus on timeliness using the DELTA-Q Systems Development paradigm (DELTA-QSD, developed by PNSol), which computes timeliness by modelling systems observationally using so-called outcome expressions. An outcome expression is a compositional definition of a system's observed behaviour in terms of its basic operations. Given the behaviour of the basic operations, DELTA-QSD efficiently computes the stochastic behaviour of the whole system including its timeliness. This paper formally proves useful algebraic properties of outcome expressions w.r.t. timeliness. We prove the different algebraic structures the set of outcome expressions form with the different DELTA-QSD operators and demonstrate why those operators do not form richer structures. We prove or disprove the set of all possible distributivity results on outcome expressions. On our way for disproving 8 of those distributivity results, we develop a technique called properisation, which gives rise to the first body of maths for improper random variables. Finally, we also prove 14 equivalences that have been used in the past in the practice of DELTA-QSD. An immediate benefit is rewrite rules that can be used for design exploration under established timeliness equivalence. The Horse Herd Optimization Algorithm (HOA) is a new meta-heuristic algorithm based on the behaviors of horses at different ages. The HOA was introduced recently to solve complex and high-dimensional problems. This paper proposes a binary version of the Horse Herd Optimization Algorithm (BHOA) in order to solve discrete problems and select prominent feature subsets. Moreover, this study provides a novel hybrid feature selection framework based on the BHOA and a minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (MRMR) filter method. This hybrid feature selection, which is more computationally efficient, produces a beneficial subset of relevant and informative features. Since feature selection is a binary problem, we have applied a new Transfer Function (TF), called X-shape TF, which transforms continuous problems into binary search spaces. Furthermore, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) is utilized to examine the efficiency of the proposed method on ten microarray datasets, namely Lymphoma, Prostate, Brain-1, DLBCL, SRBCT, Leukemia, Ovarian, Colon, Lung, and MLL. In comparison to other state-of-the-art, such as the Gray Wolf (GW), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Genetic Algorithm (GA), the proposed hybrid method (MRMR-BHOA) demonstrates superior performance in terms of accuracy and minimum selected features. Also, experimental results prove that the X-Shaped BHOA approach outperforms others methods.
