Disposable cups contribute to plastic pollution, with billions of cups discarded globally every year. The purpose of this study was to investigate how consumer sustainability attitudes and practice transfer to takeaway coffee consumption. This was done by exploring coffee drinkers’ perceived value of takeaway coffee. The coffee cup, whether disposable or reusable, was seen as integral to the takeaway coffee experience and the study also sought to explore coffee drinkers’ behaviour around cups. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with an international sample of coffee drinkers. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data. Prominent themes were mapped onto Holbrook’s (1999) typology of consumer value. Takeaway coffee was found to be dominated by self-oriented values, with taste and convenience supreme elements that drive consumption. Other-oriented value elements such as sustainability received low priority in purchase decisions. In the interplay between convenience and sustainability, convenience was found to have the upper hand. The findings are of value to policy makers and coffee brands in terms of empowering coffee drinkers to enjoy takeaway coffee sustainably.

The purpose of the study is to contribute to an increased understanding of different SDGs in some regions and local communities in Sweden. The aim of the study is also to create an increase in our understanding of the SDGs by comparing communities with different structures and results. The framework consists of sustainable development, Agenda 2030, the stakeholder model, legitimacy theory, and corporate social responsibility (CSR). The study has been carried out with a qualitative method and an abductive approach. Semi-structured interviews were also used to collect some of the data material. Furthermore, the study has also been based upon official statistics concerning 16 local communities as well as three regions in Sweden. We have limited the study to some comparable data representing the recent situation on two levels, i.e., representing different regions as well as local communities. Our main aim is to analyze the different outcomes in these regions and local communities. A limited number of SDGs has been used together with a few numbers of interviews in three of these local communities. In total we have analyzed five of these interviews. Secondly, we have analyzed the official data for different SDGs in Sweden. Here we have used the latest public data for some of the SDGs, both for three regions as well as for sixteen local communities within these regions. Therefore, the results are based upon comparisons of the work in these local communities as well as three regions in Sweden. Furthermore, we have limited our comparisons to six of the 17 SDGn for the regions as well as five for the local communities. The SDGs we compare in our study are no poverty, the life-span of women and men in different communities, the number of individuals which have post-secondary education higher than ordinary school, to what extent the broadband has been developed and finally the number of individuals born outside Sweden. In this book, we take stock and reflect on what roles might be created to enable a sustainable economy. Sensitivity to corporate social responsibility, and ideas, agendas, principles, practices, and arrangements of sustainability are areas that require creating new roles and entrepreneurial approaches. We address emerging roles of existing businesses, markets, approaches, and practices for a sustainable economy. The first part deals with digitalization, green businesses, and sustainability, then we discuss social entrepreneurship and the role of SMEs in different sectors, and finally we end with the key organizational challenges in achieving sustainable development and how these might be overcome.

The aim is to explore what sustainability values entrepreneurs in nature-based businesses highlight in their online communications with stakeholders. What kind of sustainability value is communicated online to the stakeholders of nature-based businesses in Sweden? Is there a difference in what sustainability information nature-based businesses from different categories focus on? The study was conducted using a qualitative approach. Data were collected from 100 nature-based businesses in Sweden. The selected companies belong to these industries: agriculture, food producers, forestry, garden, and contract work. Data were collected from secondary sources, such as websites, printed materials, and annual reports. The results show that there are differences between the different categories of companies, and the companies are grouped into two types. The practical implication is that nature-based businesses should use environmental sustainability as a marketing tool to gain even more customers. Customers today are increasingly aware of and interested in sustainability issues.

Purpose: This study examines the transformative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on entrepreneurial education during and after the pandemic. Methodology: Using action research-based case study with a mixed data collection method, that spans pre-, during, and post-COVID-19. Data collection involved class discussions in a final mandatory class, surveys sent after the end of the class, and official course evaluations. Findings: The pandemic-induced changes highlighted that extended instructional timeframes do not necessarily yield better entrepreneurial outcomes. A condensed, immersive approach fostered innovation and improved entrepreneurial mindsets. The hybrid teaching model introduced by the pandemic enriched class demographics, offering a broader spectrum of perspectives and enhancing discussions. Implications: The shift to digital and hybrid teaching models brought diverse student profiles, which, when appropriately harnessed, can enrich classroom discussions and peer learning. Future research should delve deeper into the motivations of distinct student groups and the long-term effects of current teaching strategies on entrepreneurial endeavors. © The Author(s) 2024.

Outdoor Hub is a store in a tourist destination located in the suburbs of the well-known and popular tourist destination of Åre, Sweden. This study discusses how the store is affected by its status as a shadow destination of Duved (outside the hotspot of Åre). Shadow destination was first mentioned in 2003 by Hudman and Jackson and is a destination located in the ‘shadow’ of another. The other destination is often a famous one that many tourists prefer, which makes it difficult for nearby places to attract tourists. Outdoor Hub’s greatest challenge is attracting customers, as they are located outside the hotspot of the well-known tourist destination; however, it can also benefit from its location in the shadow of a prominent tourist spot. This case gives students a better understanding of how a company located on the outskirts of the main tourist destination can direct its business proposition towards existing and new customers. The study shows the students the company’s strengths and problems. It also discusses how the company can create long-term relationships with other tourist actors at the destination. Furthermore, the issues of segmentation, marketing and the role of tourist information in the store are raised.

This chapter aims to provide in-depth knowledge of how nature-based tourism destinations could expand and develop sustainability through shadow destinations. The analysis uses two case studies from central Sweden to show how shadow destinations could contribute to a more sustainable tourism development. Interviews were conducted with different stakeholders, such as destination marketing organizations, tourism companies and public actors. The results show that a shadow destination can be developed along with the main destination by networking with the destination marketing organization. This study’s practical implications indicate that a shadow destination should work with the main tourist attractions or destinations to expand the tourists’ perception of the ‘destination’.

Since 2019, Central South America (CSA) has been reeling under drought conditions, with the last 4 months of 2022 receiving only 44% of the average total precipitation. Simultaneously to the drought, a series of record-breaking heat waves has affected the region. The rainfall deficit during October–November-December (OND) is highly correlated with the Niño3.4 index, indicating that the OND 2022 rainfall deficit is partly driven by La Niña, as observed in previous droughts in this region. To identify whether human-induced climate change was also a driver of the OND 2022 rainfall deficit, we analysed precipitation over the most impacted region. Our findings revealed a pattern of decreased rainfall over the past 40 years, although we cannot definitively conclude whether this trend exceeds what would be expected from natural variations. To clarify if this trend can be attributed to climate change, we looked at 1-in-20-year low rainfall events over the same region in climate models. The models show that the severity of low rainfall events decreases (i.e. they become wetter, the opposite of the trend observed in most weather records), although this trend is again not significant and is compatible with natural variability. Therefore, we cannot attribute the low rainfall to climate change. Moreover, our analysis of effective precipitation potential (evapotranspiration minus rainfall) shows that, in climate models, the increase in temperature does partly compensate for the increase in rainfall but only to offset the wetting, and does not lead to a significant climate change signal in effective precipitation. However, higher temperatures in the region, which have been attributed to climate change, decreased water availability in the models in late 2022, indicating that climate change probably reduced water availability over this period also in the observations, increasing agricultural drought, although this study did not quantify this effect. This Synthesis Report (SYR) of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) summarises the state of knowledge of climate change, its widespread impacts and risks, and climate change mitigation and adaptation, based on the peer-reviewed scientific, technical and socio-economic literature since the publication of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) in 2014. The assessment is undertaken within the context of the evolving international landscape, in particular, developments in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process, including the outcomes of the Kyoto Protocol and the adoption of the Paris Agreement. It reflects the increasing diversity of those involved in climate action. This report integrates the main findings of the AR6 Working Group reports1 and the three AR6 Special Reports. It recognizes the interdependence of climate, ecosystems and biodiversity, and human societies; the value of diverse forms of knowledge; and the close linkages between climate change adaptation, mitigation, ecosystem health, human well-being and sustainable development. Building on multiple analytical frameworks, including those from the physical and social sciences, this report identifies opportunities for transformative action which are effective, feasible, just and equitable using concepts of systems transitions and resilient development pathways. Different regional classification schemes are used for physical, social and economic aspects, reflecting the underlying literature. After this introduction, Section 2, ‘Current Status and Trends’, opens with the assessment of observational evidence for our changing climate, historical and current drivers of human-induced climate change, and its impacts. It assesses the current implementation of adaptation and mitigation response options. This Synthesis Report (SYR) of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) summarises the state of knowledge of climate change, its widespread impacts and risks, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. It integrates the main findings of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) based on contributions from the three Working Groups1 , and the three Special Reports. The summary for Policymakers (SPM) is structured in three parts: SPM.A Current Status and Trends, SPM.B Future Climate Change, Risks, and Long-Term Responses, and SPM.C Responses in the Near Term.This report recognizes the interdependence of climate, ecosystems and biodiversity, and human societies; the value of diverse forms of knowledge; and the close linkages between climate change adaptation, mitigation, ecosystem health, human well-being and sustainable development, and reflects the increasing diversity of actors involved in climate action. Based on scientific understanding, key findings can be formulated as statements of fact or associated with an assessed level of confidence using the IPCC calibrated language.

This chapter discusses the role of local culture in creating sustainable value for a destination. Ordinarily, researchers consider three dimensions of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental. The social sustainability dimension usually includes culture. Some researchers, however, believe culture should constitute a fourth dimension; this is the topic of this chapter. In this chapter we investigate a case study of a 400-year-old winter market in Jokkmokk, Sweden, examining how Indigenous culture affects the value of sustainability for tourists. Tourists who visited the market are interviewed about what they consider valuable both on their current visit to the Market and on possible future visits to the area. In particular, they are asked what they would wish to experience if they returned to the location at another time of the year and the Market was not their main reason for visiting. The chapter discusses the role that culture plays in sustainability and how value is created in a sustainable way during the Jokkmokk Winter Market. The results demonstrate that the Indigenous Sami culture constitutes the principal attraction for visiting the locale both during the Winter Market and at other times of the year.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to discuss how value can be created in new ways by sharing or renting service (e g products). This new type of businesses contributes to creating sustainable value both for the customers as well as for the environment. Today, it is no longer considered sustainable to always buy products, especially when it comes to products that will be used a few times. As a result, therefore, a sharing economy has emerged. It is both about renting out existing products against payment, but there are also examples of establishments where products are rented out free of charge. Lovelock and Gummesson (2004) addressed the non-ownership paradigm orrental paradigm almost 20 years ago but there is still lack of research in this area. Study design/Methodology/Approach: The study was designed as a case study where eight different cases were selected in Sweden. The cases are all business in the outdoor and tourism industry. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with the managers as well as secondary data such as home pages, social media, and written materials. Findings: The study show that in particular the outdoor industry and tourism the phenomen on ofrenting seems to be well established for some type of service. There are some areas that have along history of renting meanwhile other is never. The result also show that some segments of customers seem to be more openminded to renting rather than buying. Originality/Value: Studies on the sharing economy is still a quite new phenomenon and this study contributes to a deeper knowledge. Practical implications: The study could be useful for business owners that are seeking new more sustainable ways to develop their industry from traditional selling products to renting them.
