BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent social interaction impairments and is male-biased in prevalence. We have established naturally occurring low sociality in male rhesus monkeys as a model for the social features of ASD. Low-social male monkeys exhibit reduced social interactions and increased autistic-like trait burden, with both measures highly correlated and strongly linked to low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) arginine vasopressin (AVP) concentration. Little is known, however, about the behavioral and neurochemical profiles of female rhesus monkeys, and whether low sociality in females is a tractable model for ASD. METHODS: Social behavior assessments (ethological observations; a reverse-translated autistic trait measurement scale, the macaque Social Responsiveness Scale-Revised [mSRS-R]) were completed on N = 88 outdoor-housed female rhesus monkeys during the non-breeding season. CSF and blood samples were collected from a subset of N = 16 monkeys across the frequency distribution of non-social behavior, and AVP and oxytocin (OXT) concentrations were quantified. Data were analyzed using general linear models. RESULTS: Non-social behavior frequency and mSRS-R scores were continuously distributed across the general female monkey population, as previously found for male monkeys. However, dominance rank significantly predicted mSRS-R scores in females, with higher-ranking individuals showing fewer autistic-like traits, a relationship not previously observed in males from this colony. Females differed from males in several other respects: Social behavior frequencies were unrelated to mSRS-R scores, and AVP concentration was unrelated to any social behavior measure. Blood and CSF concentrations of AVP were positively correlated in females; no significant relationship involving any OXT measure was found. LIMITATIONS: This study sample was small, and did not consider genetic, environmental, or other neurochemical measures that may be related to female mSRS-R scores. CONCLUSIONS: Dominance rank is the most significant predictor of autistic-like traits in female rhesus monkeys, and CSF neuropeptide concentrations are unrelated to measures of female social functioning (in contrast to prior CSF AVP findings in male rhesus monkeys and male and female autistic children). Although preliminary, this evidence suggests that the strong matrilineal organization of this species may limit the usefulness of low sociality in female rhesus monkeys as a tractable model for ASD.

Objective: Sudden gains (SGs) are rapid symptom improvements between two consecutive therapy sessions that predict treatment outcomes. This study investigated SGs in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, interpersonal relationship functioning, and social role functioning in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Method: Participants were 121 patients and 81 therapists involved in a parent randomized controlled hybrid implementation-effectiveness trial of CPT. Descriptive analyses examined the frequency and timing of different forms of SGs. Multilevel modeling examined the impact of the three SGs on outcomes. Results: PTSD SGs occurred more often and at different sessions than SGs in facets of social functioning. Most individuals experienced only one form of SG and there were no significant clinical or demographic differences in those who had PTSD only SGs, social functioning only SGs, or both SGs. PTSD SGs and interpersonal relationship functioning SGs both predicted changes in PTSD symptoms and interpersonal difficulties over time, but not changes in social role functioning. SGs in social role functioning predicted all three forms of outcomes. Conclusions: The findings suggest that there are multiple forms of SGs in CPT beyond primary symptom changes that are predictive of patient outcomes. Social deficits are common in psychosis. The Social Skills Performance Assessment (SSPA) is a performance-based measure used to approximate an individual's social skills. Those with psychosis perform worse than do unaffected controls. Prior work has examined two social skills domains derived from the SSPA: social competence and social appropriateness. Social competence and appropriateness are associated with neurocognition and functioning outcomes. However, no study to date has examined the relationship of social cognition to social competence and appropriateness. We aimed to examine the relationships among different aspects of social cognition and performance-based social functioning and hypothesized that social cognitive performance would be related to social competence and appropriateness. We also hypothesized that after controlling for neurocognition, social cognition would account for unique variance in social competence and appropriateness in separate regression models. Forty-one participants who had experienced psychosis and 42 unaffected controls completed a comprehensive battery of neurocognitive, social cognitive, and social functioning measures. Social competence was associated with neurocognition and some aspects of social cognition, while social appropriateness was only marginally associated with neurocognition. Regression models revealed that social cognition did not account for additional and unique variance in social competence or appropriateness, after adjusting for demographic covariates and neurocognition. Findings suggest that aspects of social functioning performance are differentially related to neurocognitive and social cognitive skills. Background: Depressive disorders are prevalent mental health conditions that significantly impair individuals' social functioning and communication competence. These challenges can exacerbate depressive symptoms, creating a vicious cycle that hinders recovery and overall well‐being. Despite the growing recognition of the impact of depressive disorders on social functioning and communication competence, there remains a significant gap in effective interventions addressing these specific areas. Aims: This research aims to investigate the effect of interpersonal effectiveness skill training on social functioning and communication competence among clients with depressive disorder. Design: A quasiexperimental research design. Setting: The research procedure was carried out in the outpatient clinic of Alexandria University Hospital. Subjects: The study group, which included 42 males and 18 females, and the control group had the same number of patients. Tools: After the preliminary assessment of depression, three instruments were used to collect data: a structured interview schedule that gathered sociodemographic and clinical information, the Scale of Communication Competence, and the Social Functioning Scale. Results: The study group showed a positive difference in their social functioning and communication competence score compared with the control group. Implication: The findings of this study have significant implications for the treatment and support of clients with depressive disorder by incorporating structured skill‐building programs into therapeutic regimens for individuals with depressive disorders. Objective: In spite of the evidence that both symptom reduction and functional improvement are important for supporting recovery from trauma, psychotherapy process research has largely focused on mechanisms of symptom reduction. A better understanding of how change occurs in treatments that emphasize functional improvement rather than trauma processing is critical for optimizing effective, patient-centered care. Method: This study involved secondary analysis of data collected in three multisite trials of a 10-module web-based version of Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation, a skills-focused transdiagnostic intervention. The sample included 314 trauma-exposed veterans (38% male; 64% non-Hispanic White) who screened positive for elevated symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and/or depression. Latent change score modeling examined prospective relationships between changes from pre-to-mid and mid-to-post treatment in four potential mechanisms (emotion regulation, interpersonal problems, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and depression symptoms) and the association of these changes with overall functional improvement (at posttreatment and follow-up). Results: Emotion regulation change during the first half of treatment predicted interpersonal and symptom improvements during the second half of treatment, but not vice versa. Changes in each potential mechanism were uniquely associated with functional improvement and together statistically accounted for 78% additional variance in functional improvement beyond what was associated with baseline functioning and covariates. Conclusions: Results support emotion regulation as an early mechanism of transdiagnostic therapeutic change in web-based version of Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation and highlight the relevance of all four potential mechanisms to functional improvement. The study contributes to an understanding of how change occurs in skills-focused interventions for trauma-exposed individuals. Aim Methods Results Conclusion To compare trajectories of social functioning in peer problems and prosocial behavior from 5 to 13 years between individuals born very preterm (VPT) and full‐term (FT).Participants were from the Victorian Infant Brain Study (VIBeS) longitudinal cohort, consisting of 224 individuals born VPT and 77 born FT recruited at birth. Social functioning was measured using the parent‐rated Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) peer problems and prosocial behavior subscales at 5, 7, and 13 years' corrected age. Multilevel mixed effects models were fitted.Peer problems increased with age (adjusted mean difference per year = 0.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.01, 0.07, p = 0.02), with higher peer problems in the VPT compared with the FT group (adjusted mean difference between groups = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.06, 0.86, p = 0.02). Prosocial behavior increased from early to middle childhood and decreased approaching adolescence, but was similar between VPT and FT groups (adjusted mean difference between groups = −0.05, 95% CI = −0.50, 0.40, p = 0.82).Children born VPT are at greater risk for peer problems than FT peers and may benefit from receiving greater early social support. Background: Psychotic spectrum disorders (PSD) are associated with poor social function. In this study, we investigate which of two different types of 2-month long training courses is more effective in improving day-to-day interactions and quality of life. Methods/design: Participants with psychotic spectrumdisorders will be randomly assigned to one of two training courses. Social functioning, everyday activities, social cognition and symptoms will be assessed at multiple timepoints, including baseline, treatment midpoint, end of treatment and 2-month follow-up. One training focuses on howto make good judgments about what other peoplemay be thinking or feeling in social situations, and why people might act in certain ways in different situations. The other training focuses on different strategies for handling everyday problems and stressors. Both trainings are done in one-on-one sessions with a research staff member. There will be 16-20 training sessions, each about 45-60 minutes long. Negative symptoms are a source of disability in schizophrenia, but criteria for identifying patients for clinical trials are in flux. Minimum severity for negative symptoms is paired with a definition of minimal psychosis to identify predominant negative symptoms. Two previous successful negative symptoms treatment studies used very different severity and selection criteria. We compared the prevalence of participants meeting those two criteria in a large outpatient sample of participants with schizophrenia. Data from 867 outpatients with schizophrenia who participated in one of four NIMH-funded studies were analyzed. Common data elements included diagnoses, the PANSS, and an assessment of everyday functioning. We compared previous criterion for premoninant negative symptoms based on low levels of agitation and psychosis and different cut-offs for negative symptoms severity. 57 % of the participants met the agitation-based criteria for low scores and 33 % met the psychosis-based criteria. 18 % met total PANSS score ≥ 20 and 8 % met ≥24 prominent negative symptoms criteria. 14 % met low agitation and PANSS≥20 and 2 % met the low psychosis and negative symptoms ≥24 criteria. Participants who met all predominant criteria had more impairments in social functioning (all p <.001, all d > 0.37). Criteria for predominant negative symptoms from previous clinical trials identify widely different numbers of cases, with criteria for negative symptom severity and low symptoms both impacting. All criteria yield the expected profile of relatively specific social deficits. Even in unselected populations who participated in complex research protocols, 14 % meet low- agitation based criteria for predominant negative symptoms and many more participants would be expected to meet criteria with enrichment for the presence of negative symptoms. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SZ) share traits, especially in social skills and negative symptoms, and to a lesser degree positive symptoms. Differential diagnosis can be challenging and discerning expressive and experiential negative symptoms may provide knowledge with potential diagnostic and functional relevance that can guide treatment. Two exploratory factor analyses (EFA) were conducted to reveal the underlying dimensions of negative and positive symptoms using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms & Negative Symptoms (SAPS/SANS) and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic (ADOS-G). Three factors emerged from the negative symptom EFA (70.5 % variance): NF1) Expressive Negative; NF2) Experiential Negative; and NF3) Preoccupation, Absorption & Expressive Affective Flattening. Three positive factors emerged (68.6 % variance): PF1) Hallucinations-Delusions; PF2) Grandiosity; and PF3) Thought Disorder-ADOS positive Symptoms. SZ showed higher PF1 scores, and ASD had higher PF3 scores. No differences between groups were observed in the negative factors. Across groups, all negative factors were inversely associated with quality of life. Only NF1 and NF2 and PF1 were detrimentally related to social functioning. A discriminant function analysis using all factors classified correctly 84.4 % of participants, with PF1, NF1 followed by NF2 being the best predictors of diagnosis. Expressive negative followed by Experiential negative symptoms are of diagnostic value independent of and beyond SZ-related positive symptoms and are related with detrimental functioning. Findings confirm the need to distinctively target negative symptoms, and specific SZ-related and ASD-related positive symptoms, and especially the use of several assessment tools for diagnostic classification. The prodromal phase of schizophrenia provides an optimal opportunity to mitigate the profound functional disability that is often associated with fully expressed psychosis. Considerable evidence supports the importance of neurocognition in the development of interpersonal (social) and academic (role) skills. Further findings from adolescents and young adults at clinical high risk for developing psychosis (CHR P) suggest that treatment for functioning might be most effective when targeting early and specific neurocognitive deficits. The current study addresses this critical intervention issue by examining the potential of neurocognitive deficits at intake for predicting social and role functioning over time in CHR-P youth. The study included 345 CHR-P participants from the second phase of the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study (NAPLS2) with baseline neurocognition and 2-year follow-up data on social and role functioning. Slower baseline processing speed consistently predicted poor social functioning over time, while attention deficits predicted poor role functioning at baseline and follow-up. In addition, the impact of processing speed and attention impairments on social and role functioning, respectively, persisted even when adjusting the regression models for attenuated positive, negative, and disorganized symptoms, and transition status. The current study demonstrates for, arguably the first time, that processing speed and attention are strongly predictive of social and role functioning over time, respectively, above and beyond the impact of symptoms and those CHR-P individuals that develop psychosis over the course of the study. Social cognitive functions make it possible to correctly recognize and interpret the emotions and mental states of others in the social environment, to understand their intentions correctly and to react accordingly. Therefore, these functions arecritical for healthy social interactions and professional success in human life. Social cognitive functions are impaired in many psychiatric and neurological diseases and this impairment negatively affects almost all areas of patients' lives, albeit in different dimensions. According to research findings revealing the relationship between social cognition and social functioning, social cognition should be one of the treatment targets for many diseases. Recently, there has been increasing interest in interventions that target the improvement of these functions. In this article, these training programs, research findings and assessment tools used in these studies are discussed in the specific case of schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Although studies have identified social fragmentation as an important risk factor for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, it is unknown whether it may impact social functioning. This study investigates whether social fragmentation during childhood predicts maladaptation to school as well as social functioning during childhood and adulthood. STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected from the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study. Participants included adults at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and healthy comparisons (HC). Maladaptation to school and social functioning during childhood were assessed retrospectively and social functioning in adulthood was assessed at baseline. STUDY RESULTS: Greater social fragmentation during childhood was associated with greater maladaptation to school (adjusted β = 0.21; 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.40). Social fragmentation was not associated with social functioning during childhood (unadjusted β = -0.08; 95% CI: -0.31 to 0.15). However, greater social fragmentation during childhood predicted poorer social functioning in adulthood (adjusted β = -0.43; 95% CI: -0.79 to -0.07). Maladaptation to school mediated 15.7% of the association between social fragmentation and social functioning. The association between social fragmentation and social functioning was stronger among adults at CHR-P compared to HC (adjusted β = -0.42; 95% CI: -0.82 to -0.02). CONCLUSIONS: This study finds that social fragmentation during childhood is associated with greater maladaptation to school during childhood, which in turn predicts poorer social functioning in adulthood. Further research is needed to disentangle aspects of social fragmentation that may contribute to social deficits, which would have implications for the development of effective interventions at the individual and community levels.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive development after schizophrenia onset can be shaped by interventions such as cognitive remediation, yet no study to date has investigated whether patterns of early behavioral development may predict later cognitive changes following intervention. We therefore investigated the extent to which premorbid adjustment trajectories predict cognitive remediation gains in schizophrenia. METHODS: In a total sample of 215 participants (170 first-episode schizophrenia participants and 45 controls), we classified premorbid functioning trajectories from childhood through late adolescence using the Cannon-Spoor Premorbid Adjustment Scale. For the 62 schizophrenia participants who underwent 6 months of computer-assisted, bottom-up cognitive remediation interventions, we identified MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery scores for which participants demonstrated mean changes after intervention, then evaluated whether developmental trajectories predicted these changes. RESULTS: Growth mixture models supported three premorbid functioning trajectories: stable-good, deteriorating, and stable-poor adjustment. Schizophrenia participants demonstrated significant cognitive remediation gains in processing speed, verbal learning, and overall cognition. Notably, participants with stable-poor trajectories demonstrated significantly greater improvements in processing speed compared to participants with deteriorating trajectories. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to our knowledge to characterize the associations between premorbid functioning trajectories and cognitive remediation gains after schizophrenia onset, indicating that 6 months of bottom-up cognitive remediation appears to be sufficient to yield a full standard deviation gain in processing speed for individuals with early, enduring functioning difficulties. Our findings highlight the connection between trajectories of premorbid and postmorbid functioning in schizophrenia and emphasize the utility of considering the lifespan developmental course in personalizing therapeutic interventions.

The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) is steadily increasing not only due to rising incidence, but also due to improvements in diagnosis and treatment. Accordingly, there is growing interest in improving the quality of life (QL) of chronic patients, for the assessment of which general scales are used, as well as scales developed specifically for MS. In this work, we analyzed publications devoted to assessing the quality of life of MS patients using the nonspecific SF-36 scale for the period from 2018 to 2023. Data were assessed on all eight scales: physical functioning, role functioning, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, emotional state and mental health. The usefulness of the SF-36 questionnaire has been shown in the management of patients with MS by a general practitioner for a comprehensive assessment of QL dynamics during treatment and in planning of further treatment and rehabilitation measures. However, the ambiguity of numerous QL studies results in MS obtained using the SF-36 questionnaire requires continued research and improvement of the instrument itself.

Abstract Purpose This study proposed and evaluated a theoretical model for exploring the relationships between neurocognition, self-defeatist beliefs, experiential negative symptoms, and social functioning in individuals with chronic schizophrenia. Method The study recruited 229 individuals given a diagnosis of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders from outpatient clinics and the day ward of a mental health hospital. After informed consent was obtained, the participants underwent assessments using the backward digit span, the digit symbol, and measures of self-defeatist beliefs, experiential negative symptoms, and social functioning. A structural equation model was applied to assess the fitness of the hypothesized model, with indices such as the goodness-of-fit index, comparative fit index, root mean square error of approximation, and standardized root mean square residual being used for model evaluation. Results The hypothesized model had an adequate fit. The study findings indicated that neurocognition might indirectly influence self-defeatist beliefs through its effect on experiential negative symptoms. Contrary to expectations, the study did not observe a direct influence of neurocognition, self-defeatist beliefs, or negative symptoms on social functioning. The revised model revealed the role of experiential negative symptoms in mediating the association between neurocognition and social functioning. However, self-defeatist beliefs did not significantly affect social functioning. Discussion Before modifying negative thoughts, enhancement of self-awareness ability can help improve negative symptoms and thereby improve the performance of social functions. Future research should develop a hierarchical program of negative symptoms, from cognition rehabilitation to enhancement of self-awareness, and end with modifying maladaptive beliefs.

Abstract Background Understanding the determinants of global quality of life in cancer patients is crucial for improving their overall well-being. While correlations between various factors and quality of life have been established, the causal relationships remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to identify the causal factors influencing global quality of life in cancer patients and compare them with known correlative factors. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire data, alongside demographic and disease-related features, collected from new cancer patients during their initial visit to an oncology outpatient clinic. Correlations with global quality of life were identified using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Causal inference analysis was performed using two approaches. First, we employed the Dowhy Python library for causal analysis, incorporating prior information and manual characterization of an acyclic graph. Abstract Background Mentalizing refers to the ability to understand one’s own and others’ mental states. Mentalizing is considered a key component of social cognition and healthy personality development. A multinational assessment tools able to appraise the multidimensional and multifaceted aspects of this complex construct are needed. Objective The present study had two aims: (a) validate an English version of the Multidimensional Mentalizing Questionnaire (MMQ, 33 items) which was designed to assess mentalizing based on an integrated and multilevel model of mentalizing; (b) explore the correlational relationships between the six dimensions of the MMQ and a set of sociodemographic, psycho-cognitive, mental health, and socio-functional variables. Methods Overall, 1823 individuals (age: 19–76 years old [M = 45; SD = 16]; sex: male = 48.51%, female = 50.57%, non-binary = 0.9%) participated in an online survey. While the participants came from 77 different countries, most of them were residents in UK and USA (95%). Data analytics include confirmatory factorial analysis and Pearson correlations. Results The CFA results validated the factorial structure of a 28-items MMQ-English version, with acceptable goodness of fit indices. Regarding the psychometric properties, the MMQ-English version showed good internal reliability and significant positive correlation with another scale designed to assess an analogue construct showing a fair convergent validity. The findings indicated that males, individuals with lower levels of education, lower socio-economic status, depressed, and with a higher score of loneliness are significantly more likely to report poor mentalizing compared with females, individuals with higher education level, greater SES, happier, and with lower scores of loneliness. Conclusion The present study validated the English version of the MMQ.

Background and purpose Methods Results Conclusions Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and primary psychiatric disorders (PPD), such as mood, psychotic, and autism spectrum disorders, share similar clinical characteristics of behavior and social cognition. Better understanding of clinical progression in bvFTD and PPD is essential for adequate disease monitoring and trial design.In this longitudinal study (N = 89), patients with bvFTD and PPD with at least one follow‐up assessment were included from the Social Brain Project of the Alzheimer Center Amsterdam. Behavioral change and social cognitive decline were assessed via informant‐rated questionnaires (Cambridge Behavioral Inventory–Revised, Frontal Behavioral Inventory [FBI], Stereotypy Rating Inventory, Frontotemporal Dementia Rating Scale, Revised Self‐Monitoring Scale [RSMS]‐caregiver) and patient assessment (Ekman 60‐Faces Test, RSMS‐patient, Emotional Contagion Scale). Clinical trajectories (median = 1.4 years, interquartile range = 1.0–2.2) were examined using linear mixed models. In a subsample, associations with baseline serum neurofilament light (sNfL) were examined.At baseline, behavioral and social cognitive symptoms were similar between diagnosis groups, except for poorer emotion recognition in bvFTD. Over time, behavioral symptoms worsened in bvFTD, whereas most measures remained stable and the FBI improved in PPD. Regarding social cognition, emotion recognition and caregiver‐reported socioemotional sensitivity worsened in bvFTD and remained stable in PPD. Patient‐reported social cognitive measures did not change over time. Higher sNfL was associated with faster behavioral change.Trajectories of behavior and social cognition differentiate bvFTD from PPD, provided that social cognition is not patient‐reported. Therefore, we stress the need to optimize longitudinal social cognitive assessment in bvFTD. sNfL may be a useful prognostic marker of behavioral progression in neuropsychiatric populations. Background: People with dementia commonly have impaired social functioning and may not recognize this. This lack of awareness may result in worse outcomes for the person and their family carers. Objective: We aimed to characterize awareness of social functioning in dementia and describe its association with dementia severity. Methods: Multi-center cross-sectional study of people aged >65 years with dementia and family informants recruited from Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom. We used the Social Functioning in Dementia (SF-DEM) scale, assessing "spending time with other people" (domain 1), "communicating with other people" (domain 2), and "sensitivity to other people" (domain 3), and calculated lack of awareness into social functioning as the discrepancy between patient and informant ratings. Results: 108 participants with dementia (50.9% women), mean age = 78.9 years, and mean MMSE score = 22.7. Patient and informant domain 1 ratings did not differ, but patient-rating was higher than carers for domain 2 (11.2 versus 10.1; p = 0.003) and domain 3 (9.7 versus 8.1; p < 0.001). Sixty people with dementia overestimated their overall social functioning, 30 underestimated, and 18 gave ratings congruent with their informant. Performance on the MMSE and its sub-domains was not associated with SF-DEM discrepancy score. Conclusions: We found that awareness of social functioning in dementia was a multidimensional concept, which varies according to subdomains of social functioning. Purpose: This study proposed and evaluated a theoretical model for exploring the relationships between neurocognition, self-defeatist beliefs, experiential negative symptoms, and social functioning in individuals with chronic schizophrenia. Method: The study recruited 229 individuals given a diagnosis of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders from outpatient clinics and the day ward of a mental health hospital. After informed consent was obtained, the participants underwent assessments using the backward digit span, the digit symbol, and measures of self-defeatist beliefs, experiential negative symptoms, and social functioning. A structural equation model was applied to assess the fitness of the hypothesized model, with indices such as the goodness-of-fit index, comparative fit index, root mean square error of approximation, and standardized root mean square residual being used for model evaluation. Results: The hypothesized model had an adequate fit. The study findings indicated that neurocognition might indirectly influence self-defeatist beliefs through its effect on experiential negative symptoms. Contrary to expectations, the study did not observe a direct influence of neurocognition, self-defeatist beliefs, or negative symptoms on social functioning. The revised model revealed the role of experiential negative symptoms in mediating the association between neurocognition and social functioning. However, self-defeatist beliefs did not significantly affect social functioning. Discussion: Before modifying negative thoughts, enhancement of self-awareness ability can help improve negative symptoms and thereby improve the performance of social functions. Future research should develop a hierarchical program of negative symptoms, from cognition rehabilitation to enhancement of self-awareness, and end with modifying maladaptive beliefs. Background: Understanding the determinants of global quality of life in cancer patients is crucial for improving their overall well-being. While correlations between various factors and quality of life have been established, the causal relationships remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to identify the causal factors influencing global quality of life in cancer patients and compare them with known correlative factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire data, alongside demographic and disease-related features, collected from new cancer patients during their initial visit to an oncology outpatient clinic. Correlations with global quality of life were identified using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Causal inference analysis was performed using two approaches. First, we employed the Dowhy Python library for causal analysis, incorporating prior information and manual characterization of an acyclic graph. Second, we utilized the Linear Non-Gaussian Acyclic Model (LiNGAM) machine learning algorithm from the Lingam Python library, which automatically generated an acyclic graph without prior information. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: Multivariate analysis of 469 new admissions revealed that disease stage, role functioning, emotional functioning, social functioning, fatigue, pain and diarrhea were linked with global quality of life. The most influential direct causal factors were emotional functioning, social functioning, and physical functioning, while the most influential indirect factors were physical functioning, emotional functioning, and fatigue. Additionally, the most prominent total causal factors were identified as type of cancer (diagnosis), cancer stage, and sex, with total causal effect ratios of -9.47, -4.67, and − 1.48, respectively. The LiNGAM algorithm identified type of cancer (diagnosis), nausea and vomiting and social functioning as significant, with total causal effect ratios of -9.47, -0.42, and 0.42, respectively. Conclusions: This study identified that causal factors for global quality of life in new cancer patients are distinct from correlative factors. Understanding these causal relationships could provide valuable insights into the complex dynamics of quality of life in cancer patients and guide targeted interventions to improve their well-being. The aim of this study was to compare the metacognition characteristics and social functionality of patients with different mental disorders. The sample of the study consists of 280 patients with mental disorders. Healthy individuals in the control group consisted of 50 individuals who were not diagnosed with any mental disorder. The sample consisted of 330 individuals. Personal information form, Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), and Social Functioning Scale (SFS) were used to collect the data. Considering the lowest and highest scores that can be obtained from the MCQ-30 and SFS scales, it was found that all patients with mental disorders have a pathological metacognitive impairment above the average in terms of the middle score on the MCQ-30 and social functioning below average in terms of the middle score on the SFS. Pathological metacognitive impairment was found to be the highest in depression patients and the lowest in schizophrenia/psychosis patients. There was difference between the groups in terms of pathological metacognitive impairment (p < 0.05). The group with the most impaired social functioning was schizophrenia/psychosis, and difference was found between the different mental disorders (p < 0.05). It was found that there was a negative relationship between the pathological metacognitive impairment and the social functioning of the patients with anxiety disorders and control group (p = 0.001). No significant relationship was found between metacognitive impairment and social functionality of patients with other mental disorders (p > 0.05). Recent operational criteria for treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) recognized positive and negative symptoms. TRS patients may have heterogeneity in negative symptoms, but empirical data were lacking. We aimed to characterize TRS patients based on negative symptoms using cluster analysis, and to examine between-cluster differences in social functioning. We administered the Clinical Assessment Interview of Negative symptoms (CAINS), Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS), the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Social and Occupational Functional Assessment (SOFAS to 126 TRS outpatients. All patients also completed the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS), the Emotion Expressivity Scale (EES), and the Social Functional Scale (SFS). A two-stage hierarchical cluster analysis was performed with the CAINS, TEPS and EES as clustering variables. We validated the clusters using ANOVAs to compare group differences in the BNSS, PANSS, SOFAS and SFS. Clustering indices supported a 3-cluster solution. Clusters 1 (n = 46) and 3 (n = 16) exhibited higher CAINS scores than Cluster 2 (n = 64), and were negative-symptom TRS subtypes. Cluster 1 reported lower TEPS than Cluster 3; but Cluster 3 reported lower EES than Cluster 1. Upon validation, Clusters 1 and 3 exhibited higher BNSS scores than Cluster 2, but only Cluster 1 exhibited lower SOFAS and higher PANSS general symptoms than Cluster 2. Both Clusters 1 and 3 had higher self-report functioning than Cluster 2. We provided evidence for heterogeneity of negative symptoms in TRS. The present study examined three empirically-derived childhood adversity dimensions as predictors of social, psychological, and symptom outcomes across three prospective assessments of a young adult sample. Participants were assessed five times over eight years with semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The analyses used the dimensions underlying multiple subscales from well-established childhood adversity measures administered at the first two assessment waves (described in a previous report). Outcome data pertain to the last three assessment waves, with sample sizes ranging from 89 to 169. As hypothesized, the childhood adversity dimensions demonstrated overlapping and differential longitudinal associations with the outcomes. Deprivation predicted the negative (deficit-like) dimension of psychosis, while Threat and Intrafamilial Adversity predicted the positive (psychotic-like) dimension. Depression and anxiety symptoms were predicted by different childhood adversity dimensions over time. Furthermore, Threat predicted a smaller and less diverse social network, Intrafamilial Adversity predicted anxious attachment, and Deprivation predicted a smaller social network, anxious and avoidant attachment, perceived social support, and loneliness. The three adversity dimensions combined accounted for moderate to large proportions of variance in several outcomes. These results extend prior work by identifying associations of three meaningful dimensions of childhood adversity with different risk profiles across psychological, social, and psychopathological domains. Aim Methods Conclusions Recent preventative approaches with young people at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR‐P) have focused on the remediation of the cognitive deficits that are readily apparent and predictive of future illness. However, the small number of trials using cognitive remediation with CHR‐P individuals have reported mixed results. The proposed 2‐phased study will test an innovative internet‐based and remotely‐delivered Specific COgnitive REmediation plus Surround (or SCORES) intervention that targets early processing speed deficits in CHR‐P adolescents aged 14–20 years old.In the first R61 phase, a single‐arm 2‐year proof of concept study, 30 CHR‐P individuals will receive SCORES for 10 weeks (4 h per week/40 h total) with a midpoint assessment at 20 h (5 weeks) to demonstrate target engagement and identify the optimal dose needed to engage the target. The Go/No‐Go criteria to move to the R33 phase will be processing speed scores improving by a medium effect size (Cohen's d ≥ .6). The proposed package includes a set of complimentary support surround procedures to increase enjoyment and ensure that participants will complete the home‐based training. In the second R33 phase, a 3‐year pilot study, we will replicate target engagement in a new and larger sample of 54 CHR‐P individuals randomized to SCORES (optimized dose) or to a video game playing control condition. In addition, the R33 phase will determine if changes in processing speed are associated with improved social functioning and decreasing attenuated positive symptoms. The support surround components of the intervention will remain constant across phases and conditions in the R33 phase to firmly establish the centrality of processing speed training for successful remediation.The SCORES study is a completely virtual intervention that targets a core cognitive mechanism, processing speed, which is a rate‐limiting factor to higher order behaviours and clinical outcomes in CHR‐P adolescents. Social cognitive functions make it possible to correctly recognize and interpret the emotions and mental states of others in the social environment, to understand their intentions correctly and to react accordingly. Therefore, these functions arecritical for healthy social interactions and professional success in human life. Social cognitive functions are impaired in many psychiatric and neurological diseases and this impairment negatively affects almost all areas of patients' lives, albeit in different dimensions. According to research findings revealing the relationship between social cognition and social functioning, social cognition should be one of the treatment targets for many diseases. Recently, there has been increasing interest in interventions that target the improvement of these functions. People with schizophrenia face challenges with forming and maintaining social relationships, often resulting in poor social functioning. Commonly used measures of social functioning provide broad information relating to social relationships, but they do not adequately capture information regarding network structure and characteristics of network members. One method that can assess these more detailed aspects of social networks and provide a more comprehensive understanding of social functioning deficits is egocentric social network analysis (SNA). SNA is a scientific discipline that uses principles of network science and graph theory to analyze social relations quantitatively. Even though some types of SNA have been applied in prior schizophrenia studies, its application as a framework to measure social functioning has been extremely limited. Therefore, this article aims to formally introduce SNA and select quantitative SNA metrics, including measures of network composition, structure, homophily, and centrality, to schizophrenia researchers as novel ways of measuring components of social functioning. To demonstrate the application of SNA, we provide illustrative examples of the SNA metrics and graphical diagrams of social networks for two individuals with schizophrenia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Despite the recognised importance of mental disorders and social disconnectedness for mortality, few studies have examined their co-occurrence. Aims: To examine the interaction between mental disorders and three distinct aspects of social disconnectedness on mortality, while taking into account sex, age and characteristics of the mental disorder. Method: This cohort study included participants from the Danish National Health Survey in 2013 and 2017 who were followed until 2021. Survey data on social disconnectedness (loneliness, social isolation and low social support) were linked with register data on hospital-diagnosed mental disorders and mortality. Poisson regression was applied to estimate independent and joint associations with mortality, interaction contrasts and attributable proportions. Results: A total of 162 497 individuals were followed for 886 614 person-years, and 9047 individuals (5.6%) died during follow-up. Among men, interaction between mental disorders and loneliness, social isolation and low social support, respectively, accounted for 47% (95% CI: 21–74%), 24% (95% CI: −15 to 63%) and 61% (95% CI: 35–86%) of the excess mortality after adjustment for demographics, country of birth, somatic morbidity, educational level, income and wealth. In contrast, among women, no excess mortality could be attributed to interaction. No clear trends were identified according to age or characteristics of the mental disorder. Conclusions: Mortality among men, but not women, with a co-occurring mental disorder and social disconnectedness was substantially elevated compared with what was expected. Awareness of elevated mortality rates among socially disconnected men with mental disorders could be of importance to qualify and guide prevention efforts in psychiatric services. Background: Mentalizing refers to the ability to understand one's own and others' mental states. Mentalizing is considered a key component of social cognition and healthy personality development. A multinational assessment tools able to appraise the multidimensional and multifaceted aspects of this complex construct are needed. Objective: The present study had two aims: (a) validate an English version of the Multidimensional Mentalizing Questionnaire (MMQ, 33 items) which was designed to assess mentalizing based on an integrated and multilevel model of mentalizing; (b) explore the correlational relationships between the six dimensions of the MMQ and a set of sociodemographic, psycho-cognitive, mental health, and socio-functional variables. Methods: Overall, 1823 individuals (age: 19–76 years old [M = 45; SD = 16]; sex: male = 48.51%, female = 50.57%, non-binary = 0.9%) participated in an online survey. While the participants came from 77 different countries, most of them were residents in UK and USA (95%). Data analytics include confirmatory factorial analysis and Pearson correlations. Results: The CFA results validated the factorial structure of a 28-items MMQ-English version, with acceptable goodness of fit indices. Regarding the psychometric properties, the MMQ-English version showed good internal reliability and significant positive correlation with another scale designed to assess an analogue construct showing a fair convergent validity. The findings indicated that males, individuals with lower levels of education, lower socio-economic status, depressed, and with a higher score of loneliness are significantly more likely to report poor mentalizing compared with females, individuals with higher education level, greater SES, happier, and with lower scores of loneliness. Sleep and circadian rhythm disruption (SCRD) is common in schizophrenia patients, who also typically experience impaired social functioning. While various factors influence social functioning in schizophrenia, the specific impact of sleep and circadian rhythm disruption remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the connection between chronotype and social functioning in remitted schizophrenia patients, examining the mediating roles of depression and sleep quality. The study included 185 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia based on DSM-5 criteria. After categorizing the patients into morningness, eveningness, or intermediate chronotypes using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire(MEQ), they were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia(CDSS), Personal and Social Performance Scale(PSPS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI). The eveningness chronotype group showed higher CDSS and PSQI scores and lower PWBS and PSPS-Total scores than the other groups (p < 0.05). A hierarchical linear regression model assessed MEQ, PSQI, and CDSS scores' effects on PSPS total scores. MEQ scores' significance diminished when CDSS scores were included. Eveningness chronotype, particularly with increased depressive symptoms, negatively impacts social functioning in remitted schizophrenia patients.These findings contribute to the understudied area of chronotype in schizophrenia and its impact on social functioning, including its interaction with sleep.. Objective: To assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with different types of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Department of Endocrinology, National Institute of Child Health, Karachi, Pakistan. Period: July 2023 to December 2023. Methods: Children of either gender, aged 5-18 years and already diagnosed with clinical diagnoses of OI type I, III, IV, or V were analyzed. At the time of enrollment, demographic as well as clinical information were gathered. HRQoL was evaluated using Pediatric Quality of life Inventory (PEDSQL TM 4.0 generic core). Results: In a total of 52 children, 27 (51.9%) were male. The mean age was 10.19±4.15 years (ranging between 5-18 years). The most common type of OI were Type-I, and Type-III, noted in 22 (42.3%), and 13 (25.0%) children respectively. It was found that total scores (p<0.001), psycho-social health (p<0.001), physical functioning (p<0.001), social functioning (p<0.001), and school functioning (p=0.013) were having distinct relationship with the types of OI. Bivariate analysis applying pearson correlation showed that there were no significant correlation that existed between age, weight, and PedsQL scores. Conclusion: Children with OI Type-III exhibited lower HRQoL across multiple domains, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions addressing the specific challenges associated with the severity of the condition. Improving social functioning deficits—a core characteristic of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders—is often listed by patients as a key recovery goal. Evidence suggests that social deficits also extend to people with schizotypy, a group at heightened risk for psychotic and other psychopathological disorders. One challenge of social functioning research in schizotypy is understanding whether social deficits arise from receiving less pleasure from social activities or from participating less in high-pleasure activities. However, limited information exists on what constitutes highly pleasurable, common social activities. In this study, 357 college students rated the frequency and enjoyment of 38 social activities. Our aims were to categorize activities based on their frequency and enjoyment, and whether these correlated with validated social functioning and schizotypy measures. We found that social activities could be characterized based on their frequency and enjoyment and created a frequency–enjoyment matrix that could be useful for future studies. Activities were correlated with social functioning, generally reaching a small effect size level, with increasing frequency and enjoyment showing associations with greater social functioning. Further, negative and disorganized—but not positive—traits were associated with less engagement and pleasure. Although follow-up studies in community samples are needed, our findings have the potential to help researchers and clinicians better understand which activities participants are more likely to engage in and derive pleasure from. The findings may also illustrate the extent to which social deficits may be due to less engagement or less pleasure from social activities, as well as which aspects of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders are associated with these facets of social functioning. Background: Delusions are a hallmark feature of psychotic disorders and lead to significant clinical and functional impairment. Internalizing symptoms—such as symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma exposure—are commonly cited to be related to delusions and delusional ideation and are often associated with deficits in social functioning. While emerging studies are investigating the impact of low social engagement on psychotic-like experiences, little work has examined the relationship between social engagement, internalizing symptoms, and delusional ideation, specifically. Methods: Using general population data from the Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland (NKI-Rockland) database (N = 526), we examined the relationships between self-reported delusional ideation, internalizing symptoms, and social engagement and tested four indirect effect models to understand how these factors interrelate. Results: Delusional ideation was significantly associated with both increased internalizing symptoms (r = 0.41, p < 0.001) and lower social engagement (r = − 0.14, p = 0.001). Within aspects of social engagement, perceived emotional support showed the strongest relationship with delusional ideation (r = − 0.17, p < 0.001). Lower social engagement was also significantly associated with increased internalizing symptoms (r = − 0.29, p < 0.001). Cross-sectional models suggest that internalizing symptoms have a significant indirect effect on the association between delusional ideation and social engagement. Conclusions: These findings reveal that elevated delusional ideation in the general population is associated with lower social engagement. Elevated internalizing symptoms appear to play a critical role in reducing engagement, possibly exacerbating delusional thinking. Regardless of baseline psychiatric symptom severity, individuals can improve from psychotherapy, including from low-intensity psychosocial treatments. We conducted a secondary analysis of a randomized trial of low-intensity mindfulness interventions to explore if and how specific indices of baseline symptom severity were associated with well-being trajectories during treatment and follow-up. In the original study, participants (N = 4, 411) with physical and mental health conditions were randomly assigned to one of two low-intensity mindfulness interventions (eight-session mindfulness-based cognitive therapy or a three-session mindfulness intervention). In this secondary analysis, we pooled across treatment groups and stratified participants into subgroups based on self-reported baseline levels of anxiety, depression, and social functioning. We used linear mixed effects models and descriptive trajectory plots to evaluate differences in well-being trajectories between subgroups. Baseline symptom severity was associated with well-being trajectory such that those with more severe anxiety, depression, or social functioning at baseline had generally lower well-being across time. All subgroups experienced initial improvement in well-being during the treatment period, though individuals with worse symptom severity tended not to sustain improvements and rebounded back towards baseline well-being levels during follow-up. These data suggest that, for individuals with more severe mental health symptoms, eight or three-session mindfulness-based interventions may still be clinically useful (as patients with more severe symptoms in this study were able to experience initial improvement in well-being from such interventions). However, for such patients, offering these mindfulness-based interventions for a longer duration may have prevented symptom rebounding.

The Mediterranean diet is considered a healthy eating pattern. It has been shown to improve people’s quality of life. When a person suffers injuries, their quality of life suffers. This research aims to accomplish the following: (a) to study the differences in the effect of the health-related quality of life on injuries according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, (b) to analyse the existing differences in the variables that make up the health-related quality of life according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and (c) to analyse the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet according to whether the participants have suffered any injury. The study was descriptive, cross-sectional, and exploratory in a sample of 556 physical education students. The PREDIMED questionnaire, the SF-36 questionnaire, and a self-administered questionnaire were used. The results showed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with higher quality of life and lower injury rates. It was also observed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet improved the effect of the quality of life on injuries. In conclusion, the Mediterranean diet is beneficial for the quality of life of young university students.

Background Loneliness, the perception that one’s social relationships do not meet the desire for social connection, is a risk factor for poor mental and physical health. Adolescents with chronic pain experience higher rates of peer loneliness which persists over time. Previous studies used a single loneliness measure, limiting our understanding of the nature of their loneliness. This study describes the types of peer loneliness (intimate, relational, and collective) experienced by these adolescents and the impact that peer loneliness has on pain-related outcomes.Methods A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 128 Canadian adolescents aged 12–18 years who experienced pain for at least 3 months. Validated measures captured demographics, pain-related characteristics, types of peer-related loneliness, measures of social well-being, and mental and physical health outcomes.Results Friedman’s tests of z-scores indicate that participants equally experienced dyadic, relational, and collective peer loneliness. MANCOVA revealed that those who identify as Black were lonelier after controlling for socioeconomic status. Multiple regression showed that loneliness was a robust predicter of worse scores on social well-being and mental health outcomes with males and females equally impacted by loneliness. Despite moderate correlations between loneliness and pain interference and pain intensity, loneliness did not predict school absences, suggesting that loneliness’ influence on physical pain outcomes may be temporally earlier (e.g. contribute to pain chronification).Conclusions Peer loneliness among adolescents with chronic pain negatively impacts their social well-being and mental health outcomes. Interventions addressing loneliness to target all three types of peer loneliness may be key to improving pain-related outcomes.

AIM: Difficulties in social functioning have been observed in youth at clinical high-risk (CHR) of psychosis even in those who do not go on to develop a psychotic illness. Few treatment studies have attempted to improve social functioning in this population. The aim of this study was to conduct a randomized trial comparing the effects of Cognitive-Behavioral Social Skills Training (CBSST) with a supportive therapy (ST). METHODS: Both CBSST and ST were weekly group therapies, delivered over 18 weeks. This was a 2-arm trial with single-blinded ratings and intention-to-treat analyses. Assessments occurred at baseline, end-of-treatment, and 12 months after the baseline assessment. The primary outcome was social and role functioning and defeatist performance attitudes were the secondary outcome. Attenuated positive and negative symptoms, anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, and beliefs about self and others were examined as exploratory outcomes. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the 2 groups at baseline or either of the 2 follow-ups. However, at follow-ups, in each group there were significant improvements in clinical symptoms. These could not be attributed to group treatment since there was no control or wait-list group. CONCLUSIONS: Since poor social functioning is one of the most observed difficulties in CHR individuals, and a decline in social functioning may be a significant predictor of later transition to psychosis, future work will be needed to find effective treatments for this decline in functioning for CHR youth.

Rhesus monkeys and humans are highly social primates, yet both species exhibit pronounced variation in social functioning, spanning a spectrum of sociality. Naturally occurring low sociality in rhesus monkeys may be a promising construct by which to model social impairments relevant to human autism spectrum disorder (ASD), particularly if low sociality is found to be stable across time and associated with diminished social motivation. Thus, to better characterize variation in sociality and social communication profiles, we performed quantitative social behavior assessments on N = 95 male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) housed in large, outdoor groups. In Study 1, we determined the social classification of our subjects by rank-ordering their total frequency of nonsocial behavior. Monkeys with the greatest frequency of nonsocial behavior were classified as low-social (n = 20) and monkeys with the lowest frequency of nonsocial behavior were classified as high-social (n = 21). To assess group differences in social communication profiles, in Study 2, we quantified the rates of transient social communication signals, and whether these social signals were initiated by or directed towards the focal subject. Finally, in Study 3, we assessed the within-individual stability of sociality in a subset of monkeys (n = 11 low-social, n = 11 high-social) two years following our initial observations. Nonsocial behavior frequency significantly correlated across the two timepoints (Studies 1 and 3). Likewise, low-social versus high-social classification accurately predicted classification two years later. Low-social monkeys initiated less prosocial behavior than high-social monkeys, but groups did not differ in receipt of prosocial behavior, nor did they differ in threat behavior. These findings indicate that sociality is a stable, trait-like characteristic and that low sociality is linked to diminished initiation of prosocial behavior in rhesus macaques. This evidence also suggests that low sociality may be a useful construct for gaining mechanistic insight into the social motivational deficits often observed in people with ASD.

Growing dissatisfaction with the current categorical diagnostic systems has led to a movement toward transdiagnostic dimensional approaches to assessment of childhood mental health disorders. We argue that a transdiagnostic approach is especially important and appropriate when screening for neurodevelopmental disorders during early childhood. In the early childhood years, symptoms often appear in the form of developmental delays that could portend a variety of different disorders. Early intervention at this point is critical, even though a final endpoint disorder is not yet apparent. Intervening early has the potential to grow the area of weakness, possibly correcting or at least ameliorating these delays. Early intervention requires a multidisciplinary approach integrating efforts across settings and providers that monitor the development of young children. We argue here that young children's language ability is central to the development of social cognition, and a prerequisite for adequate social functioning. Social deficits are defining features of a subset of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and social (pragmatic) communication disorder. Critically, impairment in social functioning is common in additional neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disorders, and even motor disorders. For this reason, we argue that, at the earliest sign of a possible neurodevelopmental disorder, children should be screened for language deficits prior to initiating a focused assessment for a specific type of neurodevelopmental disorder such as ADHD. Background: KAT6A (Arboleda-Tham) syndrome is a Mendelian disorder of the epigenetic machinery caused by pathogenic variants in the lysine acetyltransferase 6 A (KAT6A) gene. Intellectual disability and speech/language impairment (e.g., minimally verbal) are common features of the disorder, with late-truncating variants associated with a more severe form of intellectual disability. However, much of the cognitive phenotype remains elusive given the dearth of research. Participants and methods: This study examined non-verbal and social skills of 15 individuals with molecularly-confirmed diagnoses of KAT6A syndrome (Mean age = 10.32 years, SD = 4.12). Participants completed select subtests from the DAS-II, the NEPSY-II, and the Beery Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration 6th Edition, and their caregivers completed an assortment of behavior rating inventories. Results: Findings suggest global cognitive impairment with nonverbal cognition scores similar to those for receptive language. Autism-related features, particularly restricted interests and repetitive behaviors, and broad adaptive deficits were common in our sample juxtaposed with a relatively strong social drive and low frequency of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems. A general trend of lower performance scores on nonverbal and receptive language measures was observed among those with protein-truncating variants vs. missense variants; however, no effect was observed on caregiver rating inventories of daily behaviors. Late and early truncating variants yielded comparable neuropsychological profiles. Conclusions: Overall, study results show the cognitive phenotype of KAT6A syndrome includes equally impaired nonverbal cognition and receptive language functioning, paired with relatively intact social drive and strengths in behavior regulation. Emergent genotype-phenotype correlations suggest cognition may be more affected in protein-truncating than missense mutations although similar neurobehavioral profiles were observed. Longitudinal research on language abilities and social functioning in young children suggests that gains in one domain affect gains in the other. However, few studies have examined inter-relations of language and social functioning jointly among young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Pre-verbal toddlers with ASD are a group of particular clinical relevance, given that greater language abilities at school entry have been associated with positive long-term adjustment in many areas, including adaptive and social functioning. Reduced attention to and engagement in social interactions among autistic toddlers who are not yet speaking may interfere with language development concurrently and over time. The present study examined reciprocal associations between language ability and social functioning over a 2-year period across three time points in a sample of 90 pre-verbal autistic toddlers using cross-lagged panel analyses conducted in MPlus. Cross-lagged panel analyses revealed significant within-timepoint synchronous correlations, within-domain autoregressive paths over time, and as hypothesized, reciprocal significance in all cross-lagged paths. For very young pre-verbal children with ASD, language ability and social functioning appear to exert concurrent and cascading developmental influences on one another. The Mediterranean diet is considered a healthy eating pattern. It has been shown to improve people's quality of life. When a person suffers injuries, their quality of life suffers. This research aims to accomplish the following: (a) to study the differences in the effect of the health-related quality of life on injuries according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, (b) to analyse the existing differences in the variables that make up the health-related quality of life according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and (c) to analyse the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet according to whether the participants have suffered any injury. The study was descriptive, cross-sectional, and exploratory in a sample of 556 physical education students. The PREDIMED questionnaire, the SF-36 questionnaire, and a self-administered questionnaire were used. The results showed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with higher quality of life and lower injury rates. It was also observed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet improved the effect of the quality of life on injuries. Gamma-band activity has been the focus of considerable research in schizophrenia. Discrepancies exist regarding the integrity of the early auditory gamma-band response (EAGBR), a stimulus-evoked oscillation, and its relationship to symptoms in early disease. Variability in task design may play a role. This study examined sensitivity of the EAGBR to stimulus intensity and its relation to symptoms and functional impairments in the first-episode schizophrenia spectrum (FESz). Magnetoencephalography was recorded from 35 FESz and 40 matched healthy controls (HC) during presentation of 3 tone intensities (75 dB, 80 dB, 85 dB). MRIs were collected to localize auditory cortex activity. Wavelet-transformed single trial epochs and trial averages were used to assess EAGBR intertrial phase coherence (ITPC) and evoked power, respectively. Symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Groups did not differ in overall EAGBR power or ITPC. While HC exhibited EAGBR enhancement to increasing intensity, FESz exhibited reduced power to the 80 dB tone and, relative to HC, increased power to the 75 dB tone. Larger power and ITPC were correlated with more severe negative, thought disorganization, and resistance symptoms. Stronger ITPC was associated with impaired social functioning. EAGBR showed no overall deficit at disease onset. Rather, FESz exhibited a differential response across tone intensity relative to HC, emphasizing the importance of stimulus characteristics in EAGBR studies. Associations between larger EAGBR and more severe symptoms suggest aberrant synchronization driving overinclusive perceptual binding that may relate to deficits in executive inhibition of initial sensory activity. Symptoms of hoarding, such as the inability to part with possessions, leading to significant clutter, are commonly observed among residents in long-term care facilities in Egypt. This behavior significantly impacts their social interactions and functioning. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and social functioning among older adult residents in long-term care facilities. The study employed a cross-sectional survey on a purposive sample of 300 older adults. Saving Inventory-Revised and Functional Idiographic Assessment Template-Questionnaire-Short Form were used. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between hoarding symptoms and social functioning (r = 0.682, p < 0.000). A linear regression analysis supported this correlation, establishing hoarding symptoms as a significant predictor of social functioning (adjusted R2 = 0.32). The current study highlighted that a significant proportion of long-term care older adult residents displayed moderate hoarding symptoms and compromised social functioning. A noticeable positive association was observed between hoarding symptoms and social functioning. These results underscore the potential impact of hoarding symptoms on various aspects of social functioning. Given these findings, long-term care nurses should comprehend the various facets of compulsive hoarding behavior and devise effective strategies for assessment and intervention. Background and Hypothesis Loneliness, the subjective experience of feeling alone, is associated with physical and psychological impairments. While there is an extensive literature linking loneliness to psychopathology, limited work has examined loneliness in daily life in those with serious mental illness. We hypothesized that trait and momentary loneliness would be transdiagnostic and relate to symptoms and measures of daily functioning. Study Design The current study utilized ecological momentary assessment and passive sensing to examine loneliness in those with schizophrenia (N  = 59), bipolar disorder (N  = 61), unipolar depression (N  = 60), remitted unipolar depression (N  = 51), and nonclinical comparisons (N  = 82) to examine relationships of both trait and momentary loneliness to symptoms and social functioning in daily life. Study Results Findings suggest that both trait and momentary loneliness are higher in those with psychopathology (F (4,284) = 28.00, P  < .001, ηp2 = 0.27), and that loneliness significantly relates to social functioning beyond negative symptoms and depression (β = −0.44, t  = 6.40, P  < .001). Furthermore, passive sensing measures showed that greater movement (β = −0.56, t  = −3.29, P  = .02) and phone calls (β = −0.22, t  = 12.79, P  = .04), but not text messaging, were specifically related to decreased loneliness in daily life. Individuals higher in trait loneliness show stronger relationships between momentary loneliness and social context and emotions in everyday life. Conclusions These findings provide further evidence pointing to the importance of loneliness transdiagnostically and its strong relation to social functioning. Furthermore, we show that passive sensing technology can be used to measure behaviors related to loneliness in daily life that may point to potential treatment implications or early detection markers of loneliness. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit externalizing problems, which have been linked with increased anxiety and depression, peer rejection, and parental stress. Identification of early predictors of externalizing behaviors in autism will facilitate identification of vulnerable children and implementation of early preventative interventions. There is ample evidence that executive functioning, social functioning, and temperament are predictive of later externalizing problems in general populations, but less is known about these relations in ASD and other neurodiverse populations, particularly in the early preschool years. To address this gap, we assessed the relations between executive functioning, social functioning, and temperament at age 3 and externalizing problems at age 5 in a sample of neurodiverse children with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders and delays. Analyses revealed that severity of early executive functioning impairment predicted increased externalizing problems. Severity of social autism symptoms moderated this relationship such that the effect of executive functioning on externalizing problems decreased as autism symptoms increased. These findings suggest that executive functioning is an important target for identifying and developing interventions for vulnerable children and underscore the necessity of considering severity of autism symptoms when researching the development of externalizing problems in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Lay Summary: The current study examined potential predictors for externalizing problems (disruptive behavior, defiance, etc.) in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders. We found that impairments in executive functioning (processes such as inhibition and emotional control that help with goal‐directed behavior) at age 3 predicted more externalizing problems at age 5. Metacognitive functioning—which broadly encompasses the mental processes involved in thinking about the thinking of one's self and the thinking of others—is often impaired among individuals living with schizophrenia and may contribute to difficulties in social and interpersonal functioning. Although the majority of studies assessing metacognition among individuals with schizophrenia use standardized, laboratory-based measurements, an increasing number of studies have measured metacognitive capacity using natural language produced by individuals living with mental illness. At the same time, less is known about how language-derived indices of metacognitive function relate to key social outcomes among people with schizophrenia. The primary objective of this study was to employ a validated language coding system (the Metacognition Assessment Scale, Abbreviated; MAS-A) to assess metacognitive functioning from the spoken life narratives of individuals with schizophrenia (n = 32) and community controls (n = 15). Among individuals with schizophrenia, we also examined the associations between language-derived metacognition and measures of self-reported and performance-based social functioning. Our results suggest that most aspects of metacognition in our sample were not significantly diminished in people with schizophrenia compared to community controls. Unexpectedly, the MAS-A subscale related to one's ability to master psychological difficulties was rated higher among individuals with schizophrenia. Further, our results suggest that among people with schizophrenia, higher metacognitive functioning in the domain of self-reflectivity was associated with poorer self-reported social functioning, while a greater metacognitive awareness of other individuals' minds was associated with better scores on aspects of performance-based social functioning. Collectively, these results underscore the utility of assessing metacognitive functioning via life-story narratives to understand social outcomes and highlight possible aspects of resiliency among individuals who have experienced a serious mental illness.
